** Edward Kirschbaum

FERTILE — Edward Kirschbaum, 58, of Fertile, died Tuesday (Oct. 13, 1998) at his home in rural Fertile.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will be in Elim Cemetery, in rural Fertile.

There will be no visitation. Petersen-Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Francis Kirschbaum was born in Hancock County on June 13, 1940, the son of Gene and Geneva (Gelner) Kirschbaum. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1960 and married Gloria Lovick later that year.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he settled in Mason City. He worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company, during which he was a member of Teamsters Union Local 828 and then worked at Aratex Means Services for 23 years. He currently was farming in the Fertile area.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Kirschbaum, of Fertile; son, Eric and wife, Brenda, of Fertile; and their daughter, Megan; daughter, Kirstin Andersen and husband, Chris, and their son Jeffrey, of Fertile; son, John and his wife, Kathy Aargard Kirschbaum, of Syracuse, Neb.; son, Karl and his wife, Teesha Josten Kirschbaum, of Mason City; father, Gene and wife, Madonna Kirschbaum, of Fertile; brother, Tom Kirschbaum, of Fertile; sister, Linda Halverson, of Tolna, N.D.; father and mother-in-law, James and Alvera Lovick, of Fertile; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Geneva Gelner Kirschbaum, who died in 1982.

** Lisa Katherine Wedeking

MASON CITY — Lisa Katherine Wedeking, 17, of 1222 S. Carolina Ave. died Wednesday morning (October 14, 1998) following a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Will Hunsaker, of the First Church of the Open Bible, Clear Lake, officiating. Private cremation services will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., today with a special time for classmates and friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Lisa Katherine Wedeking Memorial Fund.

Lisa was born on December 31, 1980, the daughter of Gary and Barb (Liska) Wedeking in Fort Dodge. She attended Mason City High School and worked as a hostess at Bonanza Family restaurant and most recently as a sales clerk for Winslow’s Hallmark Card Shop.

Lisa was an avid music lover, spending time doing pencil drawings, figure skating, playing the violin and excelled at skateboarding.

Her magnetic and outgoing personality made it easy for her to make lasting friendships with the people she grew to love.

Those thankful for having shared in Lisa’s life include her parents Gary Wedeking and Barb Wedeking, both of Mason City; her maternal grandmother, Bonnie Liska, of Moorland, paternal grandparents, Clarence and Phyllis Wedeking, of Clarksville, one sister, Kelley Wedeking; and one brother, Brett and his wife, Natalie Wedeking, all of Mason City.

Lisa was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Clarence Liska.

** Lance Czar Beenken

MASON CITY — Lance Czar Beenken, 19, of 815 10th St. N.E., died Wednesday morning (Oct. 14, 1998) following an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Following the services, the body will be cremated.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Lance C. Beenken Memorial Fund.

Lance was born Sept. 11, 1979 in Mason City, the son of Gary and Irene (Hansen) Beenken.

Lance attended schools in Hawaii and California before his family returned to Mason City in 1989. Lance graduated from Mason City High School in 1998.

He was currently employed by Benningan’s Restaurant in Clear Lake.

Lance enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, listening to music and spending time with his friends.

He had a love and respect for outdoors and enjoyed star gazing (astrology).

Lance is survived by his parents, Gary and Irene Beenken, of Mason City; one brother, James Beenken, of Ogden, Utah; maternal grandmother, Martha Hansen, of Mason City; paternal grandmother, Charlene Beenken, of Charles City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lance was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Wesley "Wes" Beenken and Henry Hansen.

** Monica Frana

CHARLES CITY — Monica (Mrs. Marcelline) Frana, 57, of 301 S. Iowa St., died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. with a 3 p.m. rosary by the St. Bernadette Circle, and a 7:30 p.m. parish Vigil Scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Monica Marie Treml Frana was born Feb. 2, 1941 in Three Lakes Township, Redwood County, Minn.

Survivors include her husband, Marcelline, of Charles City; three sons, Mark Frana, of Marion; Monty Frana, of Waterloo; and Matthew Frana, of Charles City; two daughters, Michelle Lienemann, of Falcon Heights, Minn., and Melanie Frana, of Mason City; her parents, Joseph and Louise Treml, of Clements, Minn.; two sisters, Elaine Williams, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Mary Ann Klehr, of Jordan, Minn.; and two brothers, Ron Treml, of Clements, Minn., and Dennis Treml, of Lake Elmo, Minn.

RUDD — Bruce Brandau, 42, of rural Rudd, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage.

** Dorothea I. Starkweather

GREENE — Dorothea I. Starkweather, 83, of Greene, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, Greene, with the Rev. Galen E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, Greene, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Dorothea I. Pagle was born Aug. 22, 1915, in rural Greene.

She is survived by one daughter, Ethel Krueger, of Greene; one son, Alan Starkweather, of Waverly; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Gose, of Mishwaka, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, parents, and one brother.

CLEAR LAKE — Bula Mae Becker, 86, of Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Masonic Cemetery, Dallas Center.

Memorials may be given to the Missionary Fund of Brethren Church.

** Lance Czar Beenken

MASON CITY — Lance Czar Beenken, 19, of 815 10th St. N.E., died Wednesday morning (Oct. 14, 1998) following an automobile accident.

MASON CITY — Martha Louise Andersen, 81, of 543 Fourth St. N.E., died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at home.

** Dorothea I. Starkweather

GREENE — Funeral services for Dorothea I. Starkweather, 83, of 502 West Traer, Greene, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Oct. 17, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene, with Pastor Galen E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation was held Friday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, in Greene and will continue Saturday at the church one hour prior to services.

Dorothea I. Pagles was born Aug. 22, 1915, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Arthur Frederick and Ethel Pearl (Isdell) Pagles and died of a heart attack on Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy East Health Center in Mason City.

She received her education in the Greene Public Schools graduating in 1933. She then taught at the Mt. Nebo Country School for a year. On May 12, 1935, she was united in marriage to Clair Leroy Starkweather at the Presbyterian Manse in Greene. They farmed in the rural Greene area until 1967, when they moved into town.

Dorothea received her Nurses Aid Certificate in 1974. During this time she was working for the A&W Root Beer Stand in Greene. She then worked for Mathers Nursing Home in Greene and later Salsbury Baptist home in Charles City where she worked for 12 years. While working at Salsbury, she was recognized for her outstanding service to the residents there.

Her interests included growing a large garden and sharing it with family, friends and neighbors, sewing, crocheting and making over 100 quilts on her own and assisting with many more through her church circle. She enjoyed watching sports on television and was an avid Hawkeye, Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan.

She had a lifetime association with the First Presbyterian Church in Greene and a faithful member of the U.P.W. She was recognized as Outstanding Senior Presbyterian in 1994.

Living family members include one daughter, Ethel and her husband, Merle Krueger, of Greene; one son, Alan and his wife, Anne Starkweather, of Waverly; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Starkweather, of Nashville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Howard and his wife, Jeanette Starkweather, of Hayward, Calif.; Harlan Starkweather, of Nashville, Tenn.; Heath and his wife, Charmaine Starkweather, of Prince Frederick, Md.; Betty and her husband, Monty Heitland, of Greene; Barbara and her husband, Don Howe, of Waukon; Neely Starkweather, of Mason City; Amy and Michael Starkweather, of Waverly; 10 great-grandchildren, Kyle, Keith, Christopher, Chase and Corey Starkweather, Lindsay and Kayla Heitland, Nicholas, Andrew and Sarah Howe; one sister, Eleanor Gose, of Mishwaka, Ind.; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Pagles, of Allison and Thelma Starkweather, of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair Starkweather in 1974; her son, Arthur Leroy Starkweather; her parents; and one brother, Robert Pagles.

ST. ANSGAR — Max L. Patterson, 76, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (Oct. 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

LATIMER — Lloyd W. Muhlenbruck, 82, of Latimer died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at the Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will be in Marion Center Cemetery, rural Latimer.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Latimer.

Lloyd William Muhlenbruck was born July 11, 1916, in Latimer.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia, of Latimer; three daughters, Rhogene Smith, of Gray Court, S.C., Carol Lubkeman, of Latimer, and Donna Tropp, of Glencoe, Ill., seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents; three sisters; and three brothers.

** Bruce Eric Brandau

RUDD — Bruce Eric Brandau, 42, of 1840 120th, Rudd, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., of injuries received from an accident on his farm.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Ave., rural Rudd, with the Rev. John Bates officiating. Burial will be in the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Bruce was born March 12, 1956 in Osage, the son of George and Joan D. (Bascombe) Brandau. Bruce graduated from Osage High School in 1975.

On Dec. 8, 1979, he was united in marriage to Susie Holmes, of Mason City, at the Eden Presbyterian Church. They resided and farmed in rural Rudd.

Bruce was an active member of the Eden Presbyterian Church. He loved farming, his family and winning the game Air Barow, which he played with family and friends.

He was an avid fan of sports events, band, chorus and any activities his family participated in. He also enjoyed his card club, telling stories and a debate with anyone.

He is survived by his wife, Susie; and three sons, Tom, 17, Tim, 14 and Travis, 8; his mother, Joan D. Brandau, of Osage; one sister, Judy Maas, of Cedar Falls; six brothers, Steven Brandau and his wife, Jean, of Cedar Falls; Russ Brandau, of Osage; Craig Brandau and his wife, Colette, of Mason City; Kenneth Brandau and his wife, Linda, of Rudd; Al Brandau, of Rudd; and Dave Brandau, of Burnsville, Minn.; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Brandau; and a nephew, Charlie Brandau.

** Bula Mae Becker

CLEAR LAKE — Bula Mae Becker, 86, of Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. at the Masonic Cemetery, Dallas Center.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Hospice of North Iowa.

Bula was born on Aug. 27, 1912 in Perry, the daughter of Elmer Martin and Mary Louise (Young) Brelsford. She attended Boone County schools.

Bula married Matthew John Hill in 1933, to which four children were born. They lived in Perry. On May 29, 1956, she married Marlow Becker. They moved to Clear Lake in the late 1960’s where she had lived ever since.

Bula loved crocheting, traveling, metal detecting and fishing.

Bula is survived by her son, Don Hill and his wife, Sandy, of Boone; two daughters, Velma Brown and her husband, Dean, of Leavenworth, Wash., and Betty Erwin, of Everett, Wash.; two stepdaughters, Sandy Heard and her husband, Rollie, of Rockford; and Elaine Smith and her husband, Keith, of Mannford, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Erma Hill, of Everett, Wash.; one stepdaughter-in-law, Sophie Becker, of Eagle River, Wis.; two sisters, Betty Heffern and her husband, Cletus, of Mason City; and Katherine Fisher and her husband, Claude, of Mountain View, Mo.; three brothers, Marion Brelsford, of Perry; Lloyd Brelsford and his wife, Lila, of Jefferson; Delbert Brelsford and his wife, Fern, of Perry; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Brelsford and Goldie Breslford, of Perry; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Bula was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marlowe in 1993; a son, Robert in 1988; two brothers, Kenneth and Harold Brelsford; one stepson, Dean Becker; and one sister-in-law, Erna Brelsford.

** Loren John Iverson

CEDAR FALLS — Loren John Iverson, 62, of Cedar Falls, died Friday morning (Oct. 16, 1998) at St. Mary's Hospital, in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Nazareth Lutheran Church, in Cedar Falls.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Silver Lake Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Loren John Iverson was born on the family farm in Worth County, Iowa on March 12, 1936. He professed faith in Christ as Savior and Lord when he was 12 years old. He was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church.

After graduating from Northwood High School, Loren served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Darlene Wahl, of Grafton, and had two sons, Steve and Grant. He earned B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa. He was a school psychologist and then a clinical psychologist in the Cedar Falls area throughout his professional life.

He was honored as the Outstanding Young Religious Leader by the local Chamber of Commerce.

Loren married Annette Huff, of Hopkins, Mo. They celebrated their 21st anniversary in June and attended Grant's wedding in Vancouver, British Columbia, in July.

Loren is survived by his wife, Annette; son, Steven and his wife, Gina and grandchildren, Blake Loren and Lauren Marie, of Altoona; son, Grant and his wife, Angela, of Vancouver, British Columbia; and sister, Dorothy Burtness, of Manhattan, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Sophus and Tena A. (Schneider) Iverson; sister, Sylvia; and brother, Paul.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dahl-VanHove-Schoof Funeral Home, 1825 W. 12th St., Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613. The Memorial fund will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization sponsored by President Jimmy Carter that builds homes for the poor and disadvantaged.

FOREST CITY — Martin Sveen, 86, of Leland, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the West Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Martin Sveen was born Feb. 10, 1912 in Winnebago County, rural Thompson.

Survivors include two daughters, Marlis Beenken, of Wesley, and Ruth Bachman, of Forest City; one son, Kevin Sveen, of Leland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Juhl, of Crystal Lake, Mildred Nolte, of North Hollywood, Calif., and Beatrice Carter, of Overland Park, Kan.; and one brother, Ervin Sveen, of Woodland Hills, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one great-grandson, three brothers and three sisters.

Ross was born December 13, 1905, near Red Oak, the son of John A. and Quinnetta (Milner) Oliver. Ross graduated from Red Oak High School in 1923, attended junior college in Red Oak and graduated from Iowa State University in 1929.

Ross married Helen M. McClure on Sept. 14, 1929, at Ames. He and Helen moved to Mason City in 1952.

Ross was an area conservationist for the Department of Agriculture (Soil Conservation Service) for 36 years, retiring in 1969. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Noon Kiwanis Club, Harding Masonic Lodge, York Rite, White Shrine, El Kahir Shrine Temple, High Twelve and Demolay, was a past president of the Soil and Water Conservation Society, was a charter member of United Ostomy Association, a former member of the Agricultural Engineers Society, a member Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and A.A.R.P. and was a life member of O.P.E.D.A.

Ross is survived by his son, John M. Oliver and his wife, Julie, of Burnet, Texas; his daughter, Carolyn Eckardt and her husband, Dean, of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Phoebe Moore, of Branson Mo.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; one grandchild; and three brothers.

** Max L. Patterson

ST. ANSGAR — Max L. Patterson, 76, died Friday (Oct. 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School St., St. Ansgar.

Max Lewis Patterson was born on April 7, 1922, in Mitchell County, rural Lyle, Minn., the son of John C. and Velma (Rutt) Patterson. He attended grade school at Mona.

Max served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard ship in the southwest Pacific. Max married Mildred Holstad of Northwood on Sept. 18, 1943, in San Diego, Calif. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Mitchell County to the farm.

Max was a member of Six Mile Grove Lutheran Church, rural Lyle, Minn., for nearly 50 years, serving as chairman, deacon and trustee. He also served on the Toeterville Elevator Board and the Federal Land Bank Board. Since moving to St. Ansgar, he had been a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar.

Max farmed in Mitchell County many years before purchasing Nickerson Seed in rural Osage, later changing the name to Patterson Seed. He retired due to ill health, turning the business over to his sons.

In his later years he enjoyed working with his Percheron horses, his pride and joy. He took part in many parades and sleigh rides in the winter.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of St. Ansgar; five sons, Craig Patterson and his wife, Romona, Jerry Patterson and his wife, Susan, Roger Patterson and his wife, Diane, Michael Patterson and his wife, Lisa, and Phil Patterson and his wife, Jodi, all of rural St. Ansgar; his grandsons, Jamie, Scott, Chris and his wife, Wendy, Terry and his wife, Nancy, Jeremy and Dustin Patterson; his granddaughters, Julie Nickerson, Kimberly and her husband, Kent Karschnik, Dar Tanya, Darcy, Danielle, Mandy and Kelsi Patterson; his great-grandchildren, Autumn and Bryce Nickerson, Garrett, Alexandra, Dargan, Nicole and Blake Patterson, and Domonic Bierbrodt; his brothers, Don Patterson and his wife, Enid, of Lyle, Minn., John Patterson and his wife, Fran, and Darrell Patterson and his wife, Ruth, both of St. Ansgar; his sisters, Neva and her husband, Otto Nelson, of Lyle, Minn., Helen and her husband, Clarence Debner, of Marble Rock, and Lois and her husband ,Walter Benesh, of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Max was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in infancy.

TUCSON, Ariz.— V. Ferne Moore, 93, died Wednesday (Oct. 14, 1998) in Tucson, Ariz.

V. Ferne Moore was born July 18, 1905, at Clear Lake. She lived in the Ventura area until moving to Tucson in 1959.

She is survived by four children, Beverly and Carl Peters, Mason City, Bud and Zoc Moore, Overland Park, Kan., Beth Strickler, Ames, and Becky Moore, Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Moore.

Memorials may be directed to the Ventura United Methodist Church.

RICEVILLE — Leola Frances Griffin Hill, 85, died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at her apartment.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with the Rev. Thomas Mowbray officiating. Interment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.

Leola was born March 7, 1913, in Bailey.

She is survived by her sons, James Hill, Northwood, and Dr. Donald Hill, San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Larry, Kevin and David Klitzke; and seven great-grandchildren.

Leola was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers, and four sisters.

MASON CITY — Martha "Louise" Anderson, 81, of 543 Fourth St. N.E., died Thursday (Oct. 15, 1998) at her home.

Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Greg Reese of Abundant Life Tabernacle, Albert Lea, Minn., officiating. Interment will take place in Oakwood Cemetery, Forest City, at a later date.

There will be no public visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Louise Andersen Memorial Fund.

Martha "Louise" Andersen was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Swisher to Morton and Ruby C. (Christ) Olsen. The family then moved to Forest City where she graduated high school.

Louise worked at Deckers in Mason City for many years before moving to Omaha, Neb., where she worked for First Data Corporation.

After retiring she returned to Mason City where she has lived the last 16 years.

Louise was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and bird watching.

She is survived by three sons, David B. Andersen and his wife, Joyce, Carter Lake, James O. Andersen, and his wife, Delores, Mason City, Martin "Bill" Andersen and his wife, Joann, Omaha, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, James Olsen, Austin, Texas.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Ruby Hodson; and one grandson, David S. Andersen.

** Veryl Schmidt

BURT — Veryl Schmidt, 80, of Burt, died Sunday (Oct. 18, 1998) at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Burt, with the Rev. Bryce Bereuter officiating. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery, Burt.

Veryl Melvin Schmidt, the son of John William Carl Schmidt and Nola Mae (Lashbrook) Schmidt was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Algona, where he was raised and educated.

He was married to Thelma Sankey on Sept. 8, 1936, in Canton, S.D.

During World War II, he was employed in an ammunition plant in Illinois and McDonald Douglas Aircraft Plant in California. He was self employed in Madras, Ore., as a carpenter.

From 1954 to 1971, they made their home in Titonka, where they owned and operated Titonka Plumbing and Heating. They then lived in Omaha for a year before moving to Burt where he was employed as a foreman at Broughm Industries in Algona.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Burt.

He was an avid outdoorsman with a love for hunting and fishing. In later years, he enjoyed traveling to California and Virginia to visit family.

Survivors include a son, Dennis (Celine) Schmidt, of Suffolk, Va.; and a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Gary) Michaelsen, of Mason City; a sister, Lila Thompson, of Barstow, Calif.; six grandchildren, Sherry and Todd Hoffman, Terry Michaelsen, Brent Michaelsen, Aaron and Aileen Schmidt, Mark Schmidt and Amy Schmidt; six great-grandchildren, Lynsey and Kayley Hoffman, Brittney and Blake Michaelsen, Katie Michaelsen and Jordan Schmidt.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma on April 6, 1996 in Mason City; his parents; brothers, Jessie and Leonard Schmidt; sisters, Blanche Johnson and Lela Mae and Sylvia Schmidt (both in infancy); and a great-granddaughter, Crisanda Michaelsen.

** Jennie Leota Rex

CHARLES CITY — Funeral services for Jennie Leota Rex, 85, of 7 Cedar Terrace S., Charles City, formerly of Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, and the Rev. Rosemary Rhode-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, in Marble Rock. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.

Jennie Leota Bailey was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Aureola, Union Township, Floyd County, the daughter of Howard Franklin and Alice Louisa (Voelker) Bailey, and died Monday (Oct. 19, 1998) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

She received her education at the Scott Center and Shultz Country Schools, rural Marble Rock, and later attended Marble Rock High School.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she was united in marriage to Gordon Roderick Rex in Blue Earth, Minn. They made their home in rural Marble Rock, where she was employed by the Marble Rock Locker, which she later owned and operated for several years.

The family moved to Hopkins, Minn., where she was a florist for Kakachs Nursery. Upon their return to Marble Rock, they purchased and operated Rex’s Grocery Store and later owned Rex’s Cafe, which she operated from 1970 to 1976.

Gordon and Leota moved to the Cedar Terrace Apartments in Charles City in 1980. She entered the nursing home on April 10, 1992.

She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Loyal Order of the Moose, and a former member of Wa Tan Ye Club in Charles City. She was a former member of the Marble Rock United Methodist Church and presently a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Those left to cherish her memory include four daughters, Kathleen and her husband, Melvin Schilling, of Charles City; Francys and her husband, Don Ritter, of Mason City; Donna Kolbet, of Charles City; and Connie and her husband, Jerome Pitz, of Walworth, Wis.; one son, James and his wife, Betty Rex, of Marble Rock; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth Harry Bailey, of Donahue.

She was preceded in death by her husband on June 8, 1985; two grandchildren, Charles Ritter and Jimmy Ritter; her parents; two brothers, Leon Bailey and Bill Bailey; and one sister, Alice Hennings.
