** Vivian Cowan Benit

ALGONA — Vivian Cowan Benit, 84, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dennis Secrease officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Vivian Cowan Benit was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Algona.

Survivors include two sons, James Cowan of Algona, and Jerry Cowan of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dick Dale of Sparks, Nev.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, and a brother.

** Ervin E. Borcherding

HAMPTON — Ervin E. Borcherding, 65, died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Latimer, with the Rev. Randall Bell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

Ervin Edward Borcherding was born May 16, 1933, in Hampton.

Survivors include three brothers, Wilbert, Donald, and Wayne, all of Latimer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a brother in infancy.

** Rose Angelas Matheson

RAKE — Rose Angelas Matheson, 78, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at the Walter-Methodist Health Center, Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Interment will be in the West Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

Rose Angelas Matheson was born March 28, 1920, in Wells, Minn.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Dahlk of St. Louis Park, Minn.; three grandsons; and sisters and brothers, Kathryn, Magalen, Ray, Louis, and Edward, all of Wells, Minn., and Bernice DeWeber of Benicia, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, and one sister.

** Edna Huffman

CHARLES CITY — Edna Huffman, 87, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with the Rev. J. Larry Valery of the Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Trinity United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City.

Edna Lucille Brookins Huffman was born April 2, 1911, in Chickasaw County.

Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Wineman of Crystal Lake, Ill.; a son, Albert Huffman of Charles City; a brother, Franklin Brookins of Searcy, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, and two brothers.

** Eleanor M. 'Johnson' Dawson

MASON CITY — Eleanor M. "Johnson" Dawson, 79, of 20½ Second St. N.E., died at his home.

Private family graveside services will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Kanawha Cemetery. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor M. Dawson was born April 26, 1919, in Goodell.

Survivors include two daughters, Lorraine Heinold of Mason City, and Elaine Miller of Mason City; two sons, Harold Johnson of Sun City, Calif., and Keith Johnson of Mason City; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carol King of Mason City, and Virginia McClung of Mason City; and three brothers, Gailerd Erickson and Jay Erickson, both of Mason City, and James Erickson of Happy Camp, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, and one half-sister.

** Lina Sonnenberg

TITONKA — Lina Sonnenberg, 92, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Virtus Stoffregan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Lina Sonnenberg was born July 26, 1906, in Titonka.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Sonnenberg of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; a son, Rev. Harris Sonnenberg of Lindstrom, Minn.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and four brothers.

** Marilyn I. Boulton

MASON CITY — Marilyn I. Boulton, 67, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Marilyn I. Boulton was born May 16, 1931, in Mason City, the daughter of Charles and Ruby (Pope) Morse.

She was united in marriage to Max R. Boulton Sr., on Nov. 17, 1985, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.

Marilyn liked reading and flower gardening, fish and birds. She genuinely loved people and was known as mom to a lot of people, even outside her family.

She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura, and also of the Grandmother's Club, Mason City.

Those left to cherish her memory are her mother, Ruby Morse of Mason City; one son, Mark Lansaw and his wife, Joyce, of Mason City; and one daughter, Leanne Craig and her husband, Mike of Mason City; stepchildren, Michael R. Boulton of Clear Lake, Mark R. Boulton of Kalamazoo, Mich., Matthew R. Boulton of Minnesota, Max R. Boulton Jr. and his wife, HyeonJu, of Korea, Mary R. Boulton-Trosper and her husband, William, of Webb, and Marsha R. Thayer of Clear Lake; two daughters-in-law, Linda Boulton of Wayland, and Joyce Boulton of Glenwood; grandchildren, Lisa, Brandon, Logan and Lynn Craig of Mason City, Jacob and Becky Gray of Clear Lake, Rebecca Thayer of Clear Lake, and Rachel Thayer of Belmond; 10 step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Isiah, Elisha and Sara Gray, and Devin Jones; four step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger Morse and his wife, Katherine, of Mason City, and Gordon Morse and his wife, Betty, of Clear Lake; one sister, Frances Miskinins of Casper, Wyo.; nieces and nephews; former husband, Albert Lansaw; and other friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father; two daughters, Lisa and Lynn; her brother, Don Morse; and her second husband, Max Boulton Sr.

** Mary Rose Maxson

CLEAR LAKE — Mary Rose Maxson, 61, died Friday (Oct. 9, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Msgr. Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mary was born March 28, 1937, in Mankato, Minn., the daughter of Roland and Ursala (Wagner) Siebenbrunner. She graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School, Garner, in 1955. She later attended North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City.

Mary especially enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, raising flowers, practical jokes and collecting knick knacks. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Mary is survived by six children, Daniel P. Johnson and his wife, Judy, of Council Bluffs, R. Lee Johnson and his wife, Cinda, of Broomfield, Colo., Susan Kennedy and her husband, Charles, of Fertile, Russell D. Johnson and his wife, Lora, of Milo, David Walter Maxson and his wife, Angeleeta, of Des Moines, and William J. Maxson of Iowa City; 14 grandchildren, Kristin Johnson, Summer Johnson, Heather Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Erik Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Baree Weber, Eric Weber, Troy Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Shane Maxson, Stuart Maxson, Chelsea Maxson and Eric Maxson; and two sisters, Jean Haight and her husband, Robert, of Mason City, and Anita Friest and her husband, Ken, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Richard Johnson in 1988.

LAKOTA — Roland B. Smith, 83, died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1998) at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

MASON CITY — Eleanor M. "Johnson" Dawson, 79, of 20½ Second St. N.E., died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1998) at her home.

OSAGE — Lawrence H. Erdmann, 96, died Saturday (Oct. 10, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Lawrence H. Erdmann was born March 8, 1902, in Havannah, Minn.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Bowser of Brighton, Colo.; three sons, Neil Erdmann of Breckenridge, Colo., Larry Erdmann of Green River, Wyo., and Rick Erdmann of Brighton, Colo.; one sister, Ruby Erdmann of Osage; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.

** Florence Swanson Stock

OSAGE — Florence Swanson Stock, 91, of St. Ansgar, formerly of Osage, died Saturday (Oct. 10, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

Florence was born April 1, 1907, in rural Mitchell County near Osage, the daughter of Roy and Alice (Millard) Hovelson. She attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1924.

Florence worked at the Swanson-Pohle Drug Store until her marriage to Elmer Swanson in 1928. Florence was a beautiful seamstress and knitter and took great pride in her home and family. She was baptized in and remained a life-long member of the Osage First United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

After the death of her husband, Elmer, in 1957, she assisted her son for 17 years with the family business, Swanson Insurance Agency. She also worked at Dunlop-Haakenson Insurance for two years. In 1974, she married Russell Stock, a long-time friend. Florence will always be remembered as a loving and caring person.

Survivors include her husband, Russell; one daughter, Jeannine Altick and her husband, Art, of Osage; one son, Bob Swanson of Loveland, Colo.; one granddaughter; four grandsons; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two stepchildren; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Elmer, two brothers, two infant granddaughters, a great grandson and a son-in-law.

** Lucille A. Larson

AUSTIN, Minn. — Lucille A. Larson, 78, of 905 12th Ave. N.W., died Saturday evening (Oct. 10, 1998) at the Austin Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Lucille was born Aug. 11, 1920, at Otranto, Iowa, the daughter of Gustave and Mary (Schroeder) Stelter. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Toeterville. She graduated from the Otranto High School and was married to Bradford G. Larson on Jan. 8, 1939, at the Stelter family home. They resided in Stacyville, Iowa, and Rose Creek, Minn., before moving to Austin in 1945. Lucille was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA and also worked with the crafts area at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Sharon Larson of Bloomington, Minn., and Darwin and Pamela Larson of Norwalk, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Eric Swenson, Rochester, Minn., Lars Swenson, Maple Grove, Minn., Cynthia Bellefeuille, Eden Prairie, Minn., Valeria Larson, Eden Prairie, Minn., Chadd Larson, Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Larson, Norwalk, Katherine Larson, Norwalk, and Rebecca Larson, Norwalk; a great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Bellefeuille; son-in-law and wife, Jerry and Maggie Sprick, Red Wing, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Johnny Callahan, Austin; sister-in-law, Gala Stelter, Clear Lake; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Myrle and Leona Larson, Austin; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bradford; daughter, LaVonne Sprick; an infant son, Donald; and brother, Lawrence.

** Ruth E. Moore

OSAGE — Ruth E. Moore, 94, died Saturday (Oct. 10, 1998) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Riceville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edythe Hill officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery, rural McIntire.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville.

Ruth Emily Moore was born March 21, 1904, in McIntire.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Moore of Riceville and Daryl Moore of Milwaukee, Wis.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and four sisters.

NORTHWOOD — Arlene Hauge, 77, died Sunday (Oct. 11, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer "Sam" Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, a brother and a sister.

** Clair O. Meyer

CLARION — Clair O. Meyer, 69, died Saturday (Oct. 10, 1998) at his home in Climax Springs, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with the Rev. Mark Young of the Church of Christ and the Rev. Wayne Droessler of St. John's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Clair Orlue Meyer was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Webster City.

Survivors include his wife, Lorine; a daughter, Juli A. St. Clair of Marshalltown; a son, Bernard M. Meyer of Estherville; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Virgil Meyer of Galt and Sterling Meyer of Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and an infant daughter.

ROCK FALLS — Graveside committal services for Mary Jane Maxon, 85, of Glendale, Ariz., will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, at the Rock Falls Cemetery, with the Rev. David Shogren, of the Wesley United Methodist Church of Mason City, officiating.

Following the services, lunch will be served at the United Methodist Church, Rock Falls.

Mary Jane Maxon died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, in Glendale, Ariz.

** Mike Hofer

ALGONA — Mike Hofer, 84, of 1620 E. Lucas St., died Sunday (Oct. 11, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3 p.m. parish prayer service and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Mike Hofer was born Aug. 15, 1914 at Lindsey, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Florence, of Algona; one daughter, Ruth Brunsen, of Algona; and two sons, Harold and Darold, both of Livermore; seven grandchildren; one half sister, Irene Thilges, of Livermore; and two half brothers, Edward Mosser, of Durant, Okla., and Emanuel Mosser, of San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one half brother.

** Anna Morey

CHARLES CITY — Anna Morey, 97, of 805 Hildreth St., died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at the Regional Health Services, Cresco.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Michael Simiele, pastor of the Cresco Community Chapel, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday.

Anna Helena Wright Waid Morey was born Dec. 8, 1900, in Floyd County.

Survivors include a son, Frank "Pinky" Waid, of Cresco; one daughter, Peggy Brinkman, of Clarksville; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one daughter, and four brothers.

** Malcolm Dale Wissler

ATLANTIC — Malcolm Dale Wissler, 73, of Atlantic, passed away early Monday morning (Oct. 12, 1998) at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Roland Funeral Home, with the Rev. Pastor Ron Barnett officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

There will be visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Roland Funeral Home, Atlantic.

Malcolm, the son of Max and Velma Ruth Mauk Wissler, was born Aug. 10, 1925, east of Lewis, where he grew up and graduated from Lewis High School in 1943.

His marriage to Lela Mae Anderson took place Dec. 16, 1944 at the Methodist Church in Lewis. They lived in Shelby and Cass counties, where he farmed from 1944 to 1957, worked for International Farm Equipment from 1957 to 1962, and was then employed by Walnut Grove Products in Atlantic. They moved to Sun Lakes, Ariz., in 1983.

Lela passed away Feb. 3, 1994, in Sun Lakes and Malcolm moved back to Atlantic in June 1998, following health problems.

Malcolm was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge, Atlantic Elks Lodge #445 and was a 4-H Leader.

Survivors include one son, Clyde Eugene Wissler and his wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Janet Gruber and her husband, Jim, of Murray, Neb.; four grandchildren, Amber, Brooke, and marshal Wissler, all of Clear Lake; and Byron Gruber, of Murray, Neb.; one brother, Marion Wissler and his wife, Carolyn, of Des Moines; one sister, Betty Watson, of Lincoln, Neb.; a number of nieces and nephews; and a close friend Lucille Alff, of Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lela; and one son, Larry Wissler, May 1962.

** Arlene Hauge

NORTHWOOD — Arlene Hauge, 77, of Northwood, died Sunday (Oct. 11, 1998) at her residence in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood.

Arlene Hauge was born May 19, 1921 in Brookfield Township, Worth County, the daughter of Henry J. and Clara (Vold) Peterson. She was a life-long resident of Worth County.

She attended the area rural schools and after she graduated from Northwood High School in 1940, worked for the county superintendent of schools for over a period of five years and then took employment in Mason City.

On March 10, 1948, she married Leonard Hauge at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, by the Rev. Rogness. After Leonard’s death in December 1965, she remained on the farm until 1970, when she moved to Northwood and was employed at the nursing home until she retired.

She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church and of the Circle.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Joan Marie Bodenham Morris, 69, formerly of Riceville, died on Sept. 2, 1998, in Tucson, following an illness of several months.

She is to be buried in Riceville at a later date.

Joan was born in Riceville, the daughter of Nina (Mosher) and John E. "Ted" Bodenham.

She was educated in Riceville and attended and graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

She was primarily a homemaker but also held several positions in teaching, editing and dental research.

As a young woman, she was an accomplished athlete. Later she enjoyed nature, literature, cooking and travel. She was a devoted wife, daughter, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh; a daughter, Amy; and two sons, Scott and his wife, Lisa; and Dirk and his wife, Suzanne; and two grandchildren, Kinsey and Cody.

She was preceded in death by both parents; a brother, Fred; and her grandparents.

FERTILE — Harriet S. Ouverson, 86, of Colo and formerly of Fertile, died of congestive heart failure Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ in Fertile, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz and the Rev. Russ Burnett, of the United Methodist Church, of Colo, officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Center Cemetery, in rural Fertile.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth St., Nevada, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church, in Fertile.

Harriet was born on March 7, 1912 near Meservey, to Fred C. and Lydia (Mayer) Sprau. She attended school and graduated at Meservey and also obtained a teacher’s certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Harriet taught school for several years.

On Feb. 25, 1932, she married James Robert Ouverson in Meservey. They farmed most of their married life near Fertile and Harriet also was employed as a lab technician at Armour in Mason City for more than 20 years.

James died on March 13, 1967.

She married Orlo Ouverson on June 12, 1977 in Des Moines. They continued to farm until Orlo died on May 27, 1978.

Harriet moved to Colo, Iowa in December of 1989. She was a member of the church circle in both Colo and Fertile, Garden and BF&T Clubs.

Harriet loved her family and enjoyed their activities, loved hats, antiques, crystal and was a Hospice volunteer. She enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, writing poetry, and was an avid senior citizen and Christian worker in Fertile.

She is survived by two daughters, Jarlyn (Jerry) Upchurch and her husband, Bill, of Colo and Ver Lynn (Lynn) Austin and her husband, Chuck, of Omaha, Neb.; and a son, Jack and his wife, Verna, of Clear Lake; one brother, Kenneth Sprau, of Elkton, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; twin infant daughters; her son, Jay, in 1989; a great-grandchild, Jessie Ouverson; seven brothers, Frank, Ollie, Henry, Virgil, A. Fred "Fritz," Sterling, and Jacob; and three sisters, Rozell, Eva, and Thora.

HAMPTON — Emma Cathereine Schmitt, 102, of Hampton, died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Emma C. Grabbe Schmitt was born May 26, 1896, to Betz and Barbara Menning Grabbe in Franklin County on the family farm four miles north of Hampton. Emma was the third born of six children and the last to survive her siblings.

She was reared on the farm and attended the Otter Creek Country Schools which was on the corner of her parents farm four miles north of Hampton.

On Feb. 10, 1916, Emma married Charles Schmitt at the Marion Center Church, Franklin County. They farmed in the Hampton area and raised their family of two sons on the farm.

Emma was a dedicated wife, a model mother and grandmother. She was an excellent homemaker with many interests.

She loved flowers and raising vegetables in her gardens. She was always interested in getting new starter "slips" of flowers from others and seldom failed in getting them to flower and bloom.

She was creative and innovative and enjoyed doing embroidery work and took great pride in her "quilt making." She loved music and though not accomplished at it, she enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Singing in the church choir was something she loved to discuss.

She was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Seldom did she miss a service of worship until her age and health begin to slow her down. Her parents were one of the families that started and built the church.

Emma lived alone in her own home until the last two days of her life. Emma passed away at 2:20 p.m. on Oct. 12, 1998 at the age of 102 years.

Emma has entered her heavenly home and now awaits the reunion with those whom she loved so dearly. May we all be ready for that glorious day of reunion.

She is survived by one son, Wayne and his wife, Mary Schmitt, of Sheffield; one daughter-in-law, Hazel Schmitt, of Hampton; eight grandchildren, Daryl and his wife, Cilla Burbank Schmitt, of Brookline, Mass., Darwin and Emily Schmitt, of Minnetonka, Minn. ; Dean Schmitt, of Chicago, Ill.; Bev Schmitt and Bob Kunkle, of Nevada, Iowa; stepgrandchildren, Julie and Tom Drew, of Des Moines, Cynthia Steidel, of Des Moines; Steve and Laura Steidel, of White Bear, Minn.; and Vern Steidel, of Des Moines; and 10 great-grandchildren.

FERTILE — Edward Kirschbaum, 58, of Fertile, died Tuesday (Oct. 13, 1998) at his home in rural Fertile.

Edward Francis Kirschbaum was born in Hancock County on June 13, 1940, the son of Gene and Geneva (Gelner) Kirschbaum. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1960 and married Gloria Lovick later that year.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he settled in Mason City. He worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company, during which he was a member of Teamsters Union Local 828 and then worked at Aratex Means Services for 23 years. He was farming in the Fertile area.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Kirschbaum, of Fertile; son, Eric and wife, Brenda, of Fertile; and their daughter, Megan; daughter, Kirstin Andersen and husband, Chris, of Fertile; and their son, Jeffrey; son, John and his wife, Kathy Aargard Kirschbaum, of Syracuse, Neb.; son, Karl and his wife, Teesha Josten Kirschbaum, of Mason City; father, Gene and wife, Madonna Kirschbaum, of Fertile; brother, Tom Kirschbaum, of Fertile; sister, Linda Halverson, of Tolna, N.D.; father and mother-in-law, James and Alvera Lovick, of Fertile; and many extended family members.

Edward E. Bailey was born May 16, 1917 in Webster City. He attended schools in Webster City. He later moved to Lehigh and worked for Johnson Clay Works. In 1938, he married Lois Wood in Fort Dodge. They lived in Fort Dodge and later moved to Duncombe, where he worked for Arnold Grain Elevator. He later drove trucks for Pat Powers, of Duncombe and Felco Land O’Lakes at the Answer Farm for several years. In 1975, they moved back to Fort Dodge.

Survivors include sons, Ted, of Granite City, Ill.; and Ed, of Mason City; there grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; brother, Donald, of Boone; and a sister, Dorothy Eaton, of Douglas, Wyo.

She graduated from Swea City High School and Hamilton Business College, Mason City. She lived in the Bancroft and Swea City area and then moved to Mason City in 1950.

She was united in marriage with Raymond A. Latham on January 16, 1953 in Swea City. She was employed as a typist and secretary at the John Deere Plow Company of Mason City for eight years until it moved to Moline in 1958.

She enjoyed her cookbooks, taking trips with her husband to the Ozarks, spending relaxing weekends camping at area campgrounds, spending time with her nieces and nephews and listening to good music.

Dorothy is survived by one sister, Phyllis and her husband, Harold Hays of Thompson, one aunt, Laura Krater, of Loma Linda, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Richard DeWall, of Grand Meadow, Minn.; nieces Jona and Anita Hays, Polly Roll, Linette Heimbuck, Renee and LuAnn Ziemer, and her nephews Timothy Hays, Wayne DeWall, Tim and Richard T. Latham.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond in 1983; and her sister Florence DeWall in 1994.

Wesley E. Trettin, the son of Albert F. and Katherina E. (Claus) Trettin, was born July 13, 1913, in Grafton, one of nine children. He was educated in the school system near Grafton.

In 1929, he drove his family’s horses and sleighs to Rockford. His family followed to the Rockford area later in the year with their household belongings on the train.

Wes helped with the family farm until shortly before World War II, when he leased and operated a filling station until 1942. He then went back into farming until 1964. Wes again went into the oil business with Farm Service from Charles City. After retiring from this position, he was employed by Red Owl Foods and later by Iowa State University as a seed inspector.

Wes was married to Dallas Schindele on March 10, 1937 in the Zion Lutheran Church, in Rockford. He and Dallas moved to Charles City in 1968.

Wesley is survived by three children, Maxine and her husband, Paul Tegtmeier, of Rockford; James and his wife, Erika, of Mentor, Ohio; and Steve and his wife, Alice, of Charles City; sisters, Ella Schutt and Mable Trettin, of Mason City; brothers, Ed, Harold and George Trettin, of Rockford; sisters, Marie Weigand and Shirley Fullerton, both of Rockford; and special friend, Berniece Parker, of Rockford; seven grandchildren, Dan, Rick and Bill Tegtmeier; Luke, Brian and Kevin Trettin; and Diana Morris; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ann graduated from Iowa State University in 1970.

She was employed as a floral designer at Walcott Floral, Walcott, for five years.

Ann was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Walcott and was active in its choir and bell choir. She also served as pianist, substitute organist and music leader.

She was a professional volunteer, she was an executive and leader with Campfire for 10 years. She was a substitute teacher who taught at Wilton, Durant and Walcott.

She retired as a 4-H Leader after 11 years and was active in the Muscatine County Farm Bureau for 18 years.

Survivors include her husband, Darwin Krebs, of Stockton; her father, Albert Mueller, of Manly; two daughters, Carolyn Krebs, of Tracy, Calif.; Carla (Mrs. Adam) Wagner, of Story City, a student at ISU Ames; one son, Keith Krebs, a student at ISU, Ames; one foreign exchange daughter, Monica Garcia, of Monterrey, Mexico; four sisters, Ruth (Mrs. Rod) Barnett of Newton; Margaret (Mrs. Ben) Weir, of Colo; Susan (Mrs. Steve) Trebil, of Manly; Jane (Mrs. Bill) Thompson, of Dumont; two grandsons, Josh VanDeWalle, and Junior VanDeWalle.

Don started his farming venture when he was a sophomore in high school after the death of his dad. Farming and farm-related activities were his life.

Don graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1948.

He married Frances Barkman at Lake Mills, on Aug. 17, 1952.

He farmed south of Buffalo Center where they raised their family until his health became a problem. He served many years on the board of the Farmer’s Coop Elevator, also as president of the board for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Buffalo Center; one daughter, Glenda and her husband, Mike Cahalan, of Mason City; two sons, Doug and his wife, Kim Ostermann and Mark and his wife, Kim Ostermann, all of Buffalo Center; eight grandchildren, Tony, Marc, Rob, Lyndsay, Jeff, Dustin, Alison, and Taylor: two brothers, Eugene and his wife, Shirl Ostermann, of Buffalo Center; Wayne and his wife, Anna Ostermann, of Westminster, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Ruby McKim, of Nevada, Iowa; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation was held Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Emma C. Grabbe Schmitt was born May 26, 1896, to Betz and Barbara Menning Grabbe in Franklin County on the family farm four miles north of Hampton. Emma was the third born of six children and the last to survive her siblings.

She was reared on the farm and attended the Otter Creek Country Schools which was on the corner of her parents farm four miles north of Hampton.

On Feb. 10, 1916, Emma married Charles Schmitt at the Marion Center Church, Franklin County. They farmed in the Hampton area and raised their family of two sons on the farm.

Emma was a dedicated wife, a model mother and grandmother. She was an excellent homemaker with many interests.

She loved flowers and raising vegetables in her gardens. She was always interested in getting new starter "slips" of flowers from others and seldom failed in getting them to flower and bloom.

She was creative and innovative and enjoyed doing embroidery work and took great pride in her "quilt making." She loved music and though not accomplished at it, she enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Singing in the church choir was something she loved to discuss.

She was a charter member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Seldom did she miss a service of worship until her age and health begin to slow her down. Her parents were one of the families that started and built the church.

Emma lived alone in her own home until the last two days of her life. Emma passed away at 2:20 p.m. on Oct. 12, 1998 at the age of 102 years.

Emma has entered her heavenly home and now awaits the reunion with those whom she loved so dearly. May we all be ready for that glorious day of reunion.

She is survived by one son, Wayne and his wife, Mary Schmitt, of Sheffield; one daughter-in-law, Hazel Schmitt, of Hampton; eight grandchildren, Daryl and his wife, Cilla Burbank Schmitt, of Brookline, Mass., Darwin and Emily Schmitt, of Minnetonka, Minn.; Dean Schmitt, of Chicago, Ill.; Bev Schmitt and Bob Kunkle, of Nevada, Iowa; stepgrandchildren, Julie and Tom Drew, of Des Moines, Cynthia Steidl, of Des Moines; Steve and Laura Steidl, of White Bear, Minn.; and Vern Steidl, of Des Moines; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Harold; two brothers; and three sisters.

** Edna Jane Jackson

MASON CITY — Edna Jane Jackson, 54, of 2307 22nd St. S.W., died Sunday (Oct. 11, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev . Doug Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Wednesday at the funeral home and will be held one hour prior to services today.

Edna Jackson was born Feb. 29, 1944, the daughter of John and Alvine Beek. She attended the Clear Lake and Mason City High Schools. She worked as a clerk at various establishments in the Mason City and Clear Lake areas. She was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed making craft items, working with beads.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Jackson, of Mason City; and Joe Parcell and his wife, Diane, of Brighton; one daughter, Linda Septer and her husband, Steven, of Mason City; two sisters, Lois Regan, of Mankato, Minn., and Janet Sly, of Burlington; three brothers, Robert Beek, of Clear Lake, Jack Beek, of Mason City, and Gerald Beek, of Mankato, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Karen and grandparents.

FERTILE — Funeral services for Harriet S. Ouverson, 86, of Colo and formerly of Fertile, have been changed to 2 p.m. today at the Church of Christ in Fertile.

Harriet S. Ouverson died of congestive heart failure Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

** Lisa Katherine Wedeking

MASON CITY — Lisa Katherine Wedeking, 17, of 1222 S. Carolina Ave. died Wednesday morning (October 14, 1998) following a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral services will be tentatively held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 1998 at the First United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday with a special time for class mates and friends from 3 to 5 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., were other arrangements are incomplete.

** Arald D. Rowley

MASON CITY — Arald D. Rowley, 77, of Mason City, died Monday (Oct. 12, 1998) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Chris Hellevik, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, with a service at 6 p.m. conducted by the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 1328. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services on Friday.

Arald Duane Rowley was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Kanawha, the son of Elmer Jacobson and Rosa Cristina (Rasmussen) Rowley. He graduated from Kanawha High School.

Arald served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a sergeant. He was honorably discharged at the Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, on Feb. 27, 1946.

On May 25, 1947, he married DeLoris Thompson, at Belmond.

Arald enjoyed puzzles and fishing. He also enjoyed doing volunteer work with the RSVP and at the Senior Center in Mason City until ill health prevented it.

He was a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 1328, Mason City, and also a member of the Americana Legion, Post No. 101, Mason City and the Mason City Senior Center.

Survivors include his wife, DeLoris Rowley, Mason City; three children, Arald R. Rowley and his wife, Kathy, of Sumner, Wash.; Fonda Svatek and her friends, David, of Houston; and Jerry A. Rowley and his wife, Karen, of Bremerton, Wash.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister, Forest Rowley, of Laton, Utah; Keith Rowley, of Marshalltown; Viola Shahan, of Las Vegas; and Edward Rowley, of Middleton, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lewis.
