FERTILE — Lovilla Felland, 94, of Forest City, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fertile Lutheran Church.

LAKOTA — Raymond Hertzke, 83, of Lakota, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

CHARLES CITY — Robert L. Alfson, 84, of 909 10th St., died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City.

** Henry ‘Hank’ Arends

BELMOND — Henry "Hank" Arends, 85, of Belmond, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor JoAn Skyrme officiating. Interment will be in the Graceland Memorial Gardens, Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

John Henry "Hank" Arends was born near Alexander, on Nov. 17, 1912, the son of John Casper "J.C." and Anna (Bode) Arends. He attended school in Alexander.

He married Marian Irene State at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on April 20, 1938. Hank and Marian had five children.

Henry never lost his fascination with the growing fields of corn and soybeans, and the excitement of harvest. He was forever pointing out "wild roosters" (pheasants) and other animals and plants in nature. In recent years, nothing made Hank happier than going for a ride with Marian to look at the crops.

Hank was well known for his unique perspective on life. Even well into his 70s he could kick the top of a doorway. His children compiled a book on his sayings which included, "tougher than boiled owl," "slicker than skinned beef," and "so slippery you could slide down hill." His family holds dear the nicknames he bestowed upon them.

Left to mourn him are his wife, Marian, of rural Belmond; his children, Gloria Zangel and her husband, Bob, of Las Vegas; Lynne Aldrich and her husband, Lee, of Belmond; John Arends and his wife, Judy, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Dale Arends and his wife, Trese, of Belmond, and Alison McNeal and her husband, Sherman, of Cedar Falls; 14 grandchildren; six grandchildren; one brother, Richard Arends, of Kanawha; and one sister, Lena Vandusseldorp, of Alexander; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Anna; sisters, Edna Tucker and Hazel Benson; brother, Orville Arends; an infant brother; and an infant granddaughter, Lorlei Aldrich.

** Tim Just

MESA, Ariz. — Tim Just, 46, of Mesa, Ariz., died Friday (Oct. 2, 1998) at the Desert Samaritan Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell, with Father Stephen Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, with a 7 p.m. scripture service.

LAKE MILLS — Olga J. Sand, 87, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

** Phyllis Marion Gehring

ELGIN — Phyllis Marion Gehring, 94, of Elgin, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Arley Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, and after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Phyllis Marion Gehring was born Jan. 6, 1904, on a farm in Windsor Township, near West Union.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Gehring, of Marengo; Ray Herwig Jr., of Cedar Rapids; four daughters, Virginia Lammert, of Orange City, Marjorie Kohler, of Sarasota, Fla., Pat Schultz, of Mason City; and Shirley Deverell, of Las Vegas, Nev.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, one brother, and one granddaughter.

** Neta Barrett

FOREST CITY — Neta Barrett, 89, of Forest City, died Saturday (Oct. 3, 1998) at the Elms Nursing Home, Ponca, Neb.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City.

Neta Barrett was born Sept. 14, 1909 in Geneseo, Ill.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Bachman, of Ponca, Neb.; two sons, Michael Barrett, of Carroll, and James Barrett, of Omaha, Neb.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Hayes, of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and one sister.

** Priscilla E. Heiar

BANCROFT — Priscilla E. Heiar, 97, of Bancroft, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. John Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a 3 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.

Priscilla E. Heiar was born Sept. 5, 1901, in Bancroft.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Leners, of Bancroft, and Mildred Haag, of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five sisters, and two brothers.

** Dorothy Ruth Badje

BUFFALO CENTER — Dorothy Ruth Badje, 66, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be in Olena Mound Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Dorothy Ruth Badje was born Oct. 25, 1931, at Austin, Minn.

Survivors include her husband, Carl, of Buffalo Center; and one brother, Earnest Bachan, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** Robert ‘Bob’ Van Osten

MASON CITY — Robert "Bob" Van Osten, 36, of Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) as the result of a car accident near Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and continue for one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Robert James Van Osten was born Jan. 3, 1962, in Mason City, the son of Elmer and Phyllis (O’Donnell) Van Osten. He graduated from Mason City High School.

Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially ice-fishing. He also enjoyed working with fireworks pyrotechnics and helped with the Fourth of July displays at Clear Lake.

He loved animals, especially those he kept on his farm. He liked helping people and was a very kind person. He will greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Elmer and Phyllis Van Osten, Mason City; two sisters, Barbara Ruehlow and her husband, Billy; and Susan Van Osten, both of Mason City; one brother, David Van Osten and Lorna, of Mason City; four nieces and nephews, James and Mark Ruehlow, of Mason City; and Sarah and Dylan Van Osten, of Mason City; his dog, Hooch; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; and his paternal grandparents.

** Kenneth Wayne Post

CLEAR LAKE — Kenneth Wayne Post, 75, of Clear Lake, died Friday (Oct. 2, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. His body was cremated. Inurnment was in Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Kenneth W. Post Memorial Fund.

Kenneth was born Sept. 14, 1923 in Algona, the son, of Walter and Nellie Ada (Stewart) Post. The family moved in 1926 to Clear Lake where Kenneth attended school.

Kenneth was a salesman for Kelco Economentte Co., a drug sundried company, from 1951-1972. In 1972, he purchased the Coffee Shop. Later he worked for Garth Restaurant (now known as the North Beach), and Easter’s Food Store as the dairy supervisor for 10 years. He worked with Walt Leslie painting and doing other odd jobs, and the Mile Post 194 Truck Stop.

Organizations he enjoyed included the Clear Lake Evening Lions and Toast Masters.

His greatest love was going and having coffee with the guys and sharing jokes. Clear Lake was the best place in the world for him and he had the greatest friends here.

Kenneth is survived by his children, Cal Mohr and his wife, Doreen, of Surprise, Ariz.; Kim Bliss, of Phoenix; Kit Post, of Phoenix; Kelly Mohr, of Phoenix; and Lori Dickerson and her husband, Darren, of Clear Lake; 14 grandchildren, Chris, Jeremy, Jennifer; Rick, Nicole, Johnny; Rana, Zachary, Megan, Mikia, Chanz; Benjamin, Alexander and Brianne; and three great-grandchildren, Timothy, Douglas (twins) and Richie.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents.

** Helen B. Farwell

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Helen B. Farwell, 73, formerly of 1201 S. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Helen B. Farwell Memorial Fund in lieu of flowers.

Helen was born Nov. 18, 1924, in Waterloo, the daughter, of Elsie Turner and Howard Sandergard.

She graduated from East High School, Waterloo, in 1942.

She married John R. Farwell July 21, 1946 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

Helen worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo until 1960; then they moved to Clear Lake.

Helen owned and operated the Tasty Freeze on South Shore Drive from 1963 to 1968. She then owned and operated the Chalet Lamp and Gift Shop on South Shore Drive for over 20 years, retiring in 1990.

Helen enjoyed serving the public, being with people, playing bridge, bingo and going to the Casino’s. She moved to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City in November 1995.

Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Cindy Weber and her husband, Wayne, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband in 1990.

** Rodney Albert Taylor

IONIA — Rodney "Rod" Albert Taylor, 61, died Saturday (Oct. 3, 1998) at his home in Ionia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Congregational Church in New Hampton with the Rev. Carol Kruse officiating. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Conway Funeral home, New Hampton. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

Rodney Albert Taylor was born at Lime Springs, Iowa, on Jan. 7, 1937, the son of Albert and Evaline (Schmauss) Taylor. When at the age of 10, his father died and he made his home with his mother, brothers and sister at their grandmothers. He graduated from Cresco High School, where he was a star wrestler.

On Aug. 5, 1955, he was united in marriage to Elinor Foote, at Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in various towns before settling in Ionia where Rod set up his asphalt plant. Rod worked for many years laying asphalt and digging graves for many cemeteries in Floyd, Chickasaw and Howard counties.

Rod was a quiet person who liked the outdoors, watching squirrels and birds, and working, which Rod did most everyday of his life. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and would spend every available minute talking to and teaching them.

He is survived by his wife, Elinor; one daughter, Shirley Holm and her husband Don of Charles City; four sons, Rick, Gary and his fiancee Barb, Randy and his wife Sandy, and Mike and his fiancee Lisa, all of Ionia; 11 grandchildren, Doug and Sarah Holm, Travis and Samantha; Megan and Alicia; Jessica, Lisa and Jill; Dana and Alex; his mother and stepfather, Evaline and Ray Fulcher, of Cresco; two brothers, Pat and Connie Taylor, of Cresco, and Tom and Doris Taylor, of Stevens Point, Wis.; two sisters, Betty and Ken Shea, of Lime Springs; and Elenor and Jerry Wubben, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his father Albert; and a sister, Shirley.

** Robert Alfson

CHARLES CITY — Robert "Bob" Alfson, 84, of Charles City, died Sunday (Oct. 4, 1998) at the Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Paul Boostrom, the Rev. Paul Davis and the Rev. Delores Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Oakhill Cemetery near Bristow.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Robert Lewis Alfson was born July 2, 1914, at Revere, Minn.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Alfson, of Yukon, Okla.; one daughter, Delores Walker, of Lakewood, Colo.; stepson, David Howe, of Roland Park, Kan.; and two brothers, Marshall Alfson, of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Harold Alfson, of Oakhurst, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives and a son.

The family suggests memorials to the Gideon Society.

** Lovilla Felland

FERTILE — Lovilla Felland, 94, of Fertile, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at her home in Fertile.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile, with the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating, Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Lovilla Marguerite Felland was born on July 24, 1904, in Hancock County, Ellington Township, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Millie (Nesheim) Teigen. She was baptized and confirmed at Ellington Lutheran Church.

Upon completing her schooling, she attended Waldorf College. She was active in church work and social doings, having acted as pianist at Ellington Lutheran Church at one time for a period of four years and as assistant later on.

On Sept. 3, 1927, she was married to Ole Felland at Miller, Iowa. The couple farmed in Hancock and Worth counties until retiring to live on an acreage in Fertile.

They were parents of two children, Sandra, who passed away July 19, 1990 and Roger, who passed away June 12, 1995. Ole died on Dec. 6, 1979.

Lovilla enjoyed Ladies Aid and quilting at the church and always felt people had to have lunch when they came to visit. She was the oldest member of Fertile Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Goldie Felland, of Fertile, Iowa; three granddaughters, Sheila Trees, of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; Lona Trees, of Forest City, and Tanya Olson, of Fertile; six great-grandchildren, Jessica Walter, Sarah, Andy and Ann Trees, Taylor and Sydney Olson; and one great-great-grandchild, Madeline Walter; also, two sisters-in-law, Clarice Felland, of Lake Mills; Anna Rollfeson, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son and daughter, two sisters and three brothers.

** Olga J. Sand

LAKE MILLS — Olga J. Sand, 87, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Lutheran Church Chapel, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating.

There will be no visitation. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Olga J. Sand was born on Sept. 9, 1911, at Sisseton, S.D.

Survivors include one nephew, Paul Sand, of New Hampton; one niece, Mary Kuhlman; and one sister-in-law, Sibyl Sand, both of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

** Norbert A. Anderlik

RICEVILLE — Norbert A. Anderlik, 98, of Riceville, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Conway Funeral Home, Riceville, with the Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Conway Funeral Home.

Norbert A. Anderlik was born March 28, 1902, in Howard County.

Survivors include one son, Dale, of Riceville; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

LAKOTA — Raymond E. Hertzke, 83, of Lakota, died Monday (Oct. 5, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marino Melsted officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Lakota.

Raymond E. Hertzke was born Feb. 19, 1915, on the family farm northeast of Lakota.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl, of Lakota; three daughters, Shelda Steffensen, of Des Moines, Ilona Boekelman, of Lakota, and Nyla Vanourny, of Marion; two sons, Keith, of Fairmont, Minn., and Bruce, of Forest City; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Sheldahl, of Lakota; and two brothers, Otto and Charles, both of Lakota.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one sister and one brother.

** Arvilla R. Olson

ELMORE, Minn. — Arvilla R. Olson, 90, died Tuesday (Oct. 6, 1998) at the United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center.

** Joseph P. Rowe

MASON CITY — Joseph P. Rowe, 71, of 1515 10th St. S.W. died Wednesday (Oct. 7, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

** Mary ‘Marydoll’ Coburn

MASON CITY — Mary "Marydoll" Coburn, 44, of 718 N. Tennessee Place, died Thursday (Oct. 1, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Her body was cremated. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 10, 1998) at the Rudd United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Mary "Marydoll" Coburn was born April 12, 1954, the daughter of Henry M. Reams and Mary Babbitt. She attended Rudd, Rockford and Marble Rock schools.

She was united with her partner-in-life, David Coburn on May 13, 1971 at the First United Methodist Church in Rudd.

Mary enjoyed many things, including collecting dolls, being out in nature and woodworking. She touched the hearts of many people that she knew and generally loved all those around her. She believed that life was to be lived to the fullest.

She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church for many years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her mother, Mary Babbitt, of Rudd; her stepmother, Mena Reams, of Rudd; one brother, Terry Reams and his wife, Jackie, of Osage; her daughter, Tanya Coburn Kirschbaum and her husband, John, of Clear Lake; her partner-in-life, David Coburn, of Nora Springs; a dear and loving friend, Arne Luckason, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews and their families; one very special friend, Marie Nordman, of Mason City; and all of those who loved her.

She was preceded in death by one son; one daughter in infancy; one brother, Jim; and her father, Hank.

** Hildegarde M. Arnold

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Funeral services for Hildegarde Arnold, 85, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Linda Gunderson officiating. Interment will be in Central Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services in the chapel.

Hildegarde died Tuesday (Oct. 6, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, Albert Lea.

Hildegarde was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Ceresco Township, the daughter of Edward and Wilhelmina (Urban) Mees. She attended school in Garden City and graduated from high school in 1932.

On Aug. 27, 1932, Hildegard was united in marriage to Merrill Arnold at Mankato. In 1940, they moved from Willow Creek to Freeborn County, Bancroft Township. In her early days in Freeborn County she would cook for the threshing crews.

Later she worked at Woolworth’s, Naeve Hospital and Good Samaritan Center as a cook. Hildegarde was a member of Central Freeborn Lutheran Church, Circle #2 and was a Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include her daughters, Marjorie and husband, Larry Olson, of Northwood; Arlene and husband, Dennis Galagan, Albert Lea; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Viola Golden, of Presoctt Valley, Ariz.; and Ruth Benzel, Medelia, Minn.; brother, Elmer Mees, of Blooming Prairie, nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Joseph "Joe" P. Rowe, 71, of 1514 10th St. S.W., died Wednesday (Oct. 7, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, following an extended illness battling cancer.

Joseph "Joe" Rowe was born Jan. 29, 1927 in rural Mason City, the son of Jean and Alma (Lorenzen) Rowe. Joe attended Swaledale and Mason City schools.

Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Seaman First Class on the battleship Intrepid, in the Pacific Ocean from March 1945 to July 1946.

On Aug. 6, 1948, he was united in marriage to Alice Nuehring at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. He was also baptized and confirmed on April 2, 1950 at St. James Lutheran Church.

Joe farmed in the Mason City and Burchinal areas all of his life until he retired six years ago. After his retirement, he helped his son, David, with farming up to this spring, when he became too ill to work any longer.

Joe had also worked for 15 years at the Mason City Post Office as a rural substitute carrier on four rural routes. Joe was renowned in the farming community as an "artist with a combine." His greatest joy was farming. Joe had resided at the I.O.O.F. Home for the last two months.

He enjoyed playing cards there with his mother-in-law, Ruth Nuehring and her children and in-laws and friends.

He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Rowe, of Mason City; one son, David Rowe, of Rockwell; four daughters, Kathy Newman and her husband, Tom, of Clear Lake; Debby Zobel and her husband, Gary, of Mason City; Jody Thorson and her husband, Allen, of Mason City; and Sue Larson and her husband, Edwin, of Ingleside, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Kenneth Rowe, West Allis, Wis.; and his mother-in-law, Ruth Nuehring, of Mason City.

DAVENPORT — Ronald B. Ten Haken, 61, of Davenport, and formerly of the Gibbsville, Wis., area, died Saturday (Oct. 3, 1998) at his home.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1937, in the town of Lima, the son of Chester and Bertha (Van Stelle) Ten Haken. He graduated from Oostburg High School in 1954 and received his BA degree from Lakeland College.

Ronald served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.

He married Joyce Thielman in July of 1961, in Klemme. Ronald worked as a YMCA director.

Ronald is survived by a daughter, Heather (Michael) Chapman, of Phoenix; a son, Nathan (friend Avery) Ten Haken, of Nora Springs; a granddaughter, Calyx; his parents, Chester and Bertha Ten Haken, of Sheboygan Falls; two sisters, Ruth (Roy) Ten Pas of Gibbsville, and Kathy (Bob) Ingelse, of Oostburg; and one brother, Jerome (Marlys) Ten Haken, of Kiel.

Private family funeral services were held at the Huehns-Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg, Wis., with the Rev. Gerald Dykstra officiating. Burial was at Union Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

ST. ANSGAR — Roland Eske, 86, of St. Ansgar, died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1998) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, in Rock Township.

Roland Eske was born March 11, 1912, in Rock Township in Mitchell County, Iowa to Wilhelm and Augusta (Wilde) Eske. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School.

He married Margaret Bowen on April 4, 1937, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rock Township.

He worked assessing property for Mitchell County Assessor for many years. He served on the county school board and also held various church offices at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his grandchildren. His hobbies in later years included gardening, especially roses.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Jerry Knight, of Anchorage, Alaska; Clarice Earles, of Rochester, Minn.; Charlotte and her husband, Steve Billings, of Rochester, Minn.; and Marilyn and her husband, Dennis Stelter, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Laura Knutz, of Grafton.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and one son-in-law, Richard Earles.

She was baptized on Aug. 23, 1914 at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church and was confirmed on Sept. 2, 1928 at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church. She attended schools in London Township District 125 and LeRoy, Minn.

Thelma was married to Carl A. Hanson on Dec. 25, 1934 at the home of her parents in Freeborn County, Minn.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church Women Circle and the New Century Study Club.

She is survived by four sons, Wayne Hanson, of St. Ansgar; Craig Hanson, of Northwood; Luther Hanson, of Lincoln, Neb.; and Harvey Hanson, of St. Ansgar; two daughters, Sharon Gordon, of Spirit Lake, and Darlene Meling, of Faribault, Minn.; 23 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Tue, of Northwood.

GARNER — Jane Berhow, 74, of Garner, died Thursday (Oct. 8, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, with Pastor David Wiersbe, of the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake, officiating. The cremains will be buried in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Nancy Jane Berhow, the daughter of Leonard Frank and Ann Elizabeth (Colburn) Hare was born May 14, 1924 in Des Moines. She attended school in Des Moines, graduating from high school in 1943.

On July 19, 1944, she was united in marriage to John Harlan Berhow in Des Moines. They made their home in Des Moines, where she worked at the Ankeny War Plant.

In 1949, they moved to Hampton and in 1962 to Garner where they owned and operated Berhow Plumbing and Heating for 13 years. Jane also operated J & K Woodfinishing for many years.

In December 1997, she moved to Westview Care Center in Britt.

She enjoyed her family, fishing, cross-country skiing and teaching her grandchildren to play baseball.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City, Wa Tan Ye’s and Sweet Adelines.

She is survived by four daughters, Susan Berhow-Rivera, of Apple Valley, Minn.; Sandra Quintus and her husband, Steven, of Garner; Christine Greiman and her husband, Bill, of Klemme; and Jennifer Berhow Hanson and her husband, Kevin, of Ventura; grandchildren, Jonathan Berhow-Rivera, Andrea Berhow-Rivera, Nelson Berhow-Rivera, Erin Fortin and her husband, Andy, Terra Bill and her husband, Rodney, Abraham Quintus and Samuel Quintus, Natasha Berhow, Rockford Berhow, Brandon Berhow Goll, Blair Berhow-Goll and Dalton Berhow-Goll; a great-granddaughter, Mikaella Berhow-Rivera; and five stepgrandchildren, Thomas Greiman, Sheena Greiman, Tara Greiman, Rebecca Hanson and Katie Hanson; one brother, Charles M.
