NORA SPRINGS — Stephanie Mae Fingalsen, 26, of 116 Third St. N.E., left this world to meet her Lord on Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center, after a courageous two-year struggle with a very rare genetic disease, M.E.L.A.S. Syndrome.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

She graduated from Nora Springs Rock Falls High School in 1989 and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in 1992.

She then attended the University of Northern Iowa for one year and Buena Vista College for 1½ years. She was on the dean's list when she became ill and was one-half semester away from graduating. It was Stephanie's dream to work with abused children.

Because of Stephanie's great love of family and children, the family has agreed to donate Stephanie's body organs to Mayo University for the research of M.E.L.A.S. in the hope that this may give them some answers to this unknown deadly disease and to help others, especially children, who may contact this disease which so little is known about.

Stephanie's greatest joy was family holidays and gatherings, spending quality time with her closest cousins, Nicholas, Jennifer and Alex Knapp, and her fiancee's family of Mason City, most of all her beloved niece, Blake Elizabeth Fingalsen of Manhattan, Kan., who was her very special delight.

She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her giving nature and her great capacity to love. She was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing.

Stephanie leaves behind her mother, Carolyn L. Gaiser of Nora Springs; her father, Jim Fingalsen and his wife, Nancy, Litchfield, Minn.; grandfather, Elmer Fingalsen of Litchfield, Minn.; one brother, Shane Fingelsen and his wife, Erin, and their daughter, Blake, all of Manhattan, Kan.; her fiancee, Brian Leaman, Mason City; stepgrandmother, Gladys Gaiser, Rockford; one stepbrother, Derrick Gaiser and his wife, Billie, and their son, Wesley, Independence; three stepsisters, Toni, Tami and Tara and their spouses; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
