Velda L. Simonsen

HAMPTON _ Velda L. Simonsen, 83, of Hampton, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wayne Dobratz officiating. Interment will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home.

Velda L. Simonsen was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Franklin County.

Survivors include two daughters, Loretta Miller, Greene, and Maxine Heuberger, Sheffield; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two brothers and two sisters.

Lucile Agnes Miller

ALBERT LEA, Minn. _ Lucile Agnes Miller, 75, of Albert Lea, formerly of the Grafton, Iowa, area, died Thursday (Sept. 4, 1997) at her residence in Albert Lea.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, Iowa, with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood., Iowa.

Lucile Agnes Miller was born Oct. 26, 1921, in rural Grafton, Iowa, to Edwin and Jennie (Rademaker) Walk.

Lucile was united in marriage to James Ray Miller on April 13, 1947, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, in Grafton, Iowa. They lived their married life around the Grafton area. James died in 1979.

Lucile moved to Albert Lea in1988.

She enjoyed having company and cooking for them.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Sash, Albert Lea; one son, Steven Miller, Clear Lake, Iowa; three grandchildren, Debbie Blood, Jessie Hinrichsen and Michael Hinrichsen; and three brothers, Earl C. Walk, Northwood, Iowa; Dellis Walk, Grafton, Iowa, and Everett Walk, Mason City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Linnette; and two brothers, Cecil and Eugene Walk.

Lillian A. Dahle

BRITT _ Lillian A. Dahle, 85, of Britt, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. William Culbertson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

Donald Hanna

WODEN _ Donald Hanna, 78, of Woden, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John_s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Keith Sievers and the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, rural Woden.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.

Donald Wayne Hanna was born July 25, 1919, on the family farm in Grant Township, Winnebago County, the oldest child of Alfred and Helen (Schauf) Hanna.

He received his education in a rural school on the farm and attended two years of high school in Buffalo Center.

Donald entered the U.S. Army on May 3, 1941, and served 4½ years with the Red Bull 34th Division, 133rd Infantry Regiment, lst Battalion, Company C. He trained at Camp Claiborne, La., and North Ireland.

He was awarded three Bronze Stars for the Naples-Foggia, Tunisian, Rome and Arno Campaigns. When Donald returned from overseas on rotation, in June of 1944, he was assigned to the military police in Trenton, N.J. He received his discharge on Aug. 27, 1945.

Following his discharge, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in Tenton, N.J.,for 1½ years.

In 1947, he returned to Iowa and rented his parents_ farm. On Feb. 18, 1949, he was married to Eldora Christianson at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Donald was a life-long member of Grant Lutheran Church. He belonged to the American Legion Post #628 in Woden, Nordic 502 Sons of Norway, the Kum Along Club and Forest City Senior Citizens. He was also a life member of Vesterheim in Decorah.

Donald centered his life around his family. For many years, he collected antique tractors and other farm machinery, intending to restore them during his retirement years. Due to his poor health, he sold his collection at an auction in 1994.

Donald also enjoyed researching family history and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Eldora Hanna, of Woden; two daughters, Ruth and her husband, Lynn Paulson, of Medford, Ore., and Rebecca Hanna of Decorah; four sisters, Velma and her husband, Arthur Munson, of LaPorte, Ind.; Arlene Steffen, Forest City; Althea and her husband, Kenneth Brager, Forest City, and Norma Jean Kohls, Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard J. and Alfred Jr.

Harm Davids

BUFFALO CENTER _ Harm Davids, 92, of Buffalo Center, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at St. Luke_s Lutheran Home, Blue Earth, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Community Chapel, Lakota, with Pastor Ron Wheeler officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Buffalo Center Volunteer Ambulance Corps in his memory.

Harm Davids was born May 12, 1905, near Buffalo Center.

Survivors include two sons, Harold of Lakota, and Ronald of Blue Earth, Minn.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Annabell Sapp, Buffalo Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and one brother.

Henry Novak

FERTILE _ Henry Novak, 83, of Fertile, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

MASON CITY _ Janet L. Crimmings, 47, of 816 N. Madison, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Lillian A. Dahle

BRITT _ Lillian A. Dahle, 85, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, two sisters, and one son.

Catherine M. "Kate" Royek

CHARLES CITY _ Catherine M. "Kate" Royek, 78, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Riceville, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City. There will be a parish vigil scripture service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Tuesday morning.

Robert Lee Clayton Sr.

MITCHELL _ Robert Lee Clayton Sr. died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at the Veteran_s Administration Hospital, Iowa City.

Henry Novak

FERTILE _ Henry Novak, 83, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fertile Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating. Burial will be in the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.

Henry Novak was born April 25, 1914, the son of James and Emily (Zindulka) Novak at Gilman, Iowa. He was baptized and attended the Congregational Church in Gilman. He graduated from Gilman High School.

He moved to Britt with his family, where he worked in the family store, and also as a farm hand.

He entered the service in May, 1941, serving as a medic in the 34th division (Red Bull). He served in Ireland, England, Africa and Italy as a medic. He was discharged July 19, 1945, with the rank of staff sergeant.

On March 12, 1947, he married Doris Hammon of Garner and started farming in the Britt area. In 1955, they moved to their farm near Fertile. Henry was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church.

Henry loved to farm until he was forced to retire in 1989. Since then, he loved to garden and take care of the lawn. He has been in failing health these last years and has been confined to a wheelchair.

He leaves to mourn, his wife, Doris; three children, Ronald and his wife, Deb, of Forest City, Sharen and her husband, Larry, of Forest City, and Gary of Fertile; one granddaughter, Amy Rieffer of Forest City; three sisters, Rose of Palacios, Texas, Theresa of Lakewood, Calif., and Elsie of San Jose, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Mary Grimes-Dolling

AMES _ Mary Grimes-Dolling, 76, of 2009 Kellogg Ave., died Thursday (Sept. 4, 1997) at her home of cancer.

Private graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Story Memorial Gardens. Her memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Collegiate Methodist Church, 2622 Lincoln Way, Ames, with the Rev. Scott Grotewald and the Rev. Cindy McCalmont officiating.

Mary Grimes-Dolling was born in Buffalo Center, the daughter of Harry and Jennie (Rippentrop) Gilbert. She married Francis R. Grimes, a union to which three children were born, Jack D., Gene A. and Georgia G. The family moved to Ames in 1963. Mary was hostess and program director for the Wesley Foundation for several years. In 1968, she became program director for the Student Memorial Union. In 1974, the family moved to Beaverton, Ore., where Mrs. Grimes was employed with the Corporate Banking Division of First State Bank of Oregon. After her husband_s death she returned to Ames and served as house director of Alpha Gamma Rho from 1983-1987. She received the Outstanding Housemother Award in June, 1987, from the Alpha Gamma Delta International Fraternity. In July of 1987, she was married to Harold Dolling of Ames.

Mrs. Dolling is survived by two sons and one daughter, Jack D. Grimes of San Jose, Calif., Gene A. Grimes of Geneva, Ill., and Georgia Grimes Wagner of Elburn, Ill. She was blessed with and enjoyed six beautiful grandchildren, Sean, Kelly, Frank, Kyle, Drew and Paige. In addition, she is also survived by her husband, Harold Dolling, of Ames, and his sons, David J. Dolling and Roger D. Dolling, both of Des Moines. She also leaves her five brothers, David, Donald and Robert Gilbert, all of Mason City, Charles Gilbert of Milwaukee, Wis., and Russell Gilbert of St. Paul, Minn., whom she dearly loved, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a member of Collegiate Methodist Church and served in many capacities in the church and Women_s Society. She loved people and enjoyed their friendships. She was especially fond of young people and students. They were a special joy for her as she helped to guide them toward their goals and to realize their potential. "Love for everyone conquers all. Loving God brings peace and joy."

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nichols Scholarship Fund, Wesley Foundation at Collegiate Methodist Church, American Cancer Society or Homeward Hospice in Ames.

Mary Grimes-Dolling was dearly loved as a wife, mother and grandmother as well as by the many friends whose lives she touched.

Cremation Society of Iowa, Ankeny, is in charge of arrangements.

Jacob Carl Dralla

NORTHWOOD _ Jacob Carl Dralla, 7, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Bents and the Rev. Ed Harp of the Faith Assembly of God Church in Algona officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. South, and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.

Jacob Carl Dralla was born on Aug. 8, 1990, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City, the son of Carl and Laura (Bunkofske) Dralla. He was dedicated by Jess Bennett, who is a friend of the family. Jacob was a second grader in Mrs. Heidi Vansteenburg_s class in the Northwood-Kensett Elementary School.

He enjoyed riding bikes, playing with race cars, playing with his brother, Adam, and riding on the tractor with his dad and uncle on the farm.

He attended Sunday school at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Carl and Laura Dralla of Northwood; one brother, Adam Dralla of Northwood; paternal grandmother, Virginia Dralla of Hanlontown, and the late Lloyd Dralla Sr.; maternal grandparents, David and Linda Bunkofske of Burt; maternal great-grandparents, Arleta and Milt Burlingame of Algona; nine aunts and uncles, Marian Montgomery of Mason City, Robert and Janis Hall of Mason City, Richard and Corie Rieman of Clear Lake, Howard and Chris Shepard of Forest City, Danny and Connie Buckman of Forest City, Lloyd Dralla Jr. of Northwood, Curtiss and Teri Dralla of Schuyler, Neb., Terry and Ginger Lowe of Polk City and Paul Bunkofske of Louisville, Ky.; many cousins and great-cousins, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lloyd Dralla Sr.; and great-grandparents.

Robert Lee Clayton Sr.

MITCHELL _ Robert Lee Clayton Sr., 77, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at the Veteran_s Administration Medical Center, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior_s Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis of Faith Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites provided by Osage V.F.W. Post 7920 and Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Robert Lee Clayton Sr. was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Bruno, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Matt and Ann (Pederson) Clayton. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church. In 1925, Robert moved with his parents and brothers and sister to the United States, where they settled in Mitchell. He attended school in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937. He was confirmed at Our Savior_s Lutheran Church in Osage.

"Bob," as most knew him, helped in construction of Highway 9 before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Air Force in April of 1940 with his two brothers. He served as a crew chief and metal smith on the Navy_s PBY aircraft. After achieving the rank of Aviation Chief Metal Smith and surviving the Japanese attack on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, he was discharged in 1946.

Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Rose Beyer, also of Mitchell, on Dec. 16, 1943, in San Diego, Calif. To this union six children were born. After his discharge from service they returned to Mitchell where he opened and operated Clayton_s Body and Welding Shop, which he operated until 1969, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and was forced to retire.

Following his retirement, Bob continued to display his "can do" attitude by remaining active. He enjoyed attending auctions, buying and selling, yard work, conversing with friends and "always" keeping one eye on his children just in case they got out of line. Bob was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mitchell, and his children and their spouses, Robert Lee Clayton Jr. and his wife, Myra, of Rock Springs, Wyo., Cheryl Bonjour and her husband, Lynn, of Osage, Laurie Barta and her husband, Donald, of Manly, Brian Clayton and his wife, Kim, of Mitchell, and Lyle Clayton and his wife, Sandy, of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; one sister, Mildred Reasland of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother, Kenneth Clayton and his wife, Mary, of Lemoore, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pamela; and a brother, Harold.

Catherine M. "Kate" Royek

CHARLES CITY _ Catherine M. "Kate" Royek, 78, died Friday (Sept. 5, 1997) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Riceville, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville.

Catherine Marion "Kate" Royek was born Dec. 15, 1918, in New Haven.

Survivors include five daughters, Irene Royek of Fredericksburg, Sue Jurrens of Grafton, Jeanne Riggan of Rockford, and Connie Royek and Cathy Royek, both of Charles City; four brothers, Arthur "Jack" Steffen of Greenwood, Wis., Joseph "Pete" Steffen of Waterloo, Milton "Mike" Steffen of Riceville, and Raymond "Chuck" Steffen of Orchard; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.

Minnie Rover

CHARLES CITY _ Minnie Rover, 89, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 1997) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in North Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

MASON CITY _ Janet L. Crimmings, 47, of 816 N. Madison, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Eugine Agnes Mullen

HAMPTON _ Eugine Agnes Mullen, 86, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell. Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Laura Evelyn Tobsing

MASON CITY _ Laura Evelyn Tobsing, 99, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Sept. 7, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Graveside committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church in memory of Laura Tobsing.

Laura Evelyn Tobsing was born Aug. 20, 1898, in Renfrow, Okla., the daughter of Andrew Judson and Edith A. (Conway) Compton. As a child, Laura lived in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Laura attended a Baptist normal school in St. Louis, Mo., for a short time. She was the governess for the children of Will and Betty Rogers while he was with the Ziegfield Follies in Oklahoma and Chicago, Ill. When Will Rogers moved to New York, she returned to Mason City to be near her family in 1917.

Laura was employed by Modern Brotherhood of America (MBA Building) during the years of 1917 to 1920. Laura married Emil Tobsing at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua on June 9, 1920, and together they were married over 76 years. They had two daughters while living in Mason City, and during this time Mrs. Tobsing was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Methodist Church. During World War II, Mrs. Tobsing, a homemaker, moved with her husband to Ft. Knox, Ky., where he worked for the Civil Service with the Department of the Army. In 1949, the U.S. Army sent the Tobsings to Germany where Emil served as an Ordinance Inspector until his retirement in 1959. Upon returning to the United States, the Tobsings resided at Mountain Home, Ark., then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1987, and then to Mason City in 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Adean Haaheim and her husband, John, of Sarasota, Fla., and Janelle Erbschloe and her husband, Ross, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Mikal Haaheim and his wife, Cherrie, of New Lebanon, Ohio, Cheri Nevin of Ballwin, Mo., Debra Sue Lantello of Ashland, Ore., Lt. Col. Donald R. Erbschloe and his wife, Vickie, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dr. Diann E. Brei and her husband, Jim, of Milford, Mich.; and five great-grandchildren, Lisa Nevin, Krista Haaheim, Spenser Erbschloe, Amy Kincaid and Zachary Brei.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Harry, Dwight and Donald Compton; two sisters, Agnes and Blanche Compton; and her husband, Emil, of 76 years, in 1996.

Harold Virgil Randall

DES MOINES _ Harold Virgil Randall, 80, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 1997) at Integrated Health Services.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Doug Holmgren officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 S.W. Ninth St., Des Moines.

The family suggests memorials to Christ Lutheran Church.

Harold Virgil Randall was born Feb. 14, 1907, in Mason City. Mr. Randall worked for the Globe-Gazette in the 1930s and 1940s, moving to Des Moines in 1947, where he was employed at the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., retiring in 1981. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy, and was an honorary member of the 3rd Army Infantry Division. He was also a member of the International Mailers Union local, DMRAA (Des Moines Radio Amateur Association), Sons of Norway, Veterans of Foreign War and ARRL (American Radio Relay League).

Harm George Buschmann

BELMOND _ Harm George Buschmann, 88, of Belmond, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 1997) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peace Reformed Church, Garner, with the Rev. Robert Grossmann officiating. Burial will be in the Peace Reformed Church Cemetery, Garner.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Harm George Buschmann, the son of L.F. and Albertje (Storenborg) Buschmann was born Aug. 23, 1909, in Hancock County, near Goodell.

He attended Belmond Community Schools and graduated from Iowa Barber College in Des Moines and was a barber in Des Moines.

He was united in marriage to Louise Hess on Sept. 20, 1950, in Eldorado Springs, Mo. To this union, two sons were born, Paul George on March 29, 1950, and Philip Joseph on May 20, 1953.

Harm was a Northrup King seed corn dealer and a farm manager. He was member of Peace Reformed Church in rural Garner, and was a faithful member for many years, and had served as an Elder in the church.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of Belmond; son, Paul Buschmann and his wife, Susan, of Platte City, Mo., and their children, Jonathan, Zachary and Sarah; son, Philip Buschmann and his wife, Cyrena, of Sigourney, and their children, Michelle, Aaron and Kyle; sister, Reaka Buschmann of the Good Shepherd Home in Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, the Rev. Elzo Buschmann; and a sister, Antje, in infancy.

Mabel M. Nair Brown

BELMOND _ Mabel M. Nair Brown, 86, of Belmond, formerly of Ogden; died Monday (Sept. 8, 1997) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Community United Methodist Church, Ogden, with the Rev. Dana Wimmer officiating. There will be private committal services in Scranton Cemetery, Scranton.

There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel M. Nair Brown was born March 20, 1911, in Scranton.

Minnie K. Rover

CHARLES CITY _ Minnie K. Rover, 89, of Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, formerly of 91 N. Cedar Terrace, and also of the Greene, Plainfield and Nashua areas, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 1997) at the nursing home, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 705 Third Avenue, Charles City, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the North Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Mrs. Rover, the former Minnie Kathryn Kusian, was born April 30, 1908, in Dumont, the daughter of Otto and Kathryn Kusian. She attended school in Dumont.

On Jan. 7, 1925, she was united in marriage to John William Rover. The couple farmed together in the Greene, Plainfield and Nashua areas. Mr. Rover died Jan. 11, 1966, in Waterloo, from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident.

Mrs. Rover moved to Charles City in the spring of 1967. She assisted in the homes of several area families in Charles City. For several years, she was a clerk at the former Trowbridge Grocery Store.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle of the church.

She loved to garden, especially raising flowers in her garden. While indoors, she found great comfort in crocheting.

Living family members include three sons and their wives Don and Fannie Mae Rover, Hampton; LeRoy and Sharon Rover of Charles City, and Larry and Gloria Rover, Independence, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her four brothers, Fred, Ernest, Julius and Charles Kusian; and a sister, Marie Van Horn.

Eugine Agnes Mullen

Eugine was born on April 16, 1911, the daughter of Charlie and Anna (Groth) Haag in Fonda. The family later moved to Ostrander, Minn., where she attended school.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Minn., on June 8, 1930.

She lived in Taopi, Minn., and Rockford, before moving to Rockwell in about 1940.

During her working career, she served as a cook at the nursing home and then as a school cook at the Rockwell school system, retiring in 1962. For the past 18 months, she has been a resident of the Heritage Place in Hampton.

Eugine is survived by her three daughters, June Kidgell, Sunnyvale, Calif.; Beulah Mae and her husband, Robert Curley, Rockwell; and Jo Ann and her husband, Wendell Miller, Hampton; one sister, Maude Pruisman, Kanawha; one brother, Carl and his wife, Marge Haag, Austin, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Jo Ann Haag, Ackley, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, David Kidgell, Debra Fowler, Pamela McLean, Jacalyn Hartwigsen, Julie Hanawalt, Michele Schleiger, Lori Miller, Sandra Harrington, Kim Miller and Kurt Miller, along with her 12 great-grandchildren, Carrie, Samantha, Buddy, Tiffany, Michael, Kathryn, Abigail, Eleanor, Jordyn, Justin, Kayla and Kyle; and many nieces and nephews.

Janet graduated from Alameda High School, Alameda, Calif., in 1967 and also graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She worked at the Mason City Clinic.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Levern H. Nelson

FERTILE _ Levern H. Nelson, 85, of 101 Lake St., died Monday (Sept. 8, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ, Fertile, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz and the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, and one hour before the funeral services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Levern H. Nelson Memorial Fund.

Levern was Jan. 29, 1912, in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County, the son of George W. And Agnes H. (Rasmussen) Nelson. He attended country school in Grant Township.

Levern farmed with his father on the family farm. Levern married Reva June Zirbel on Feb. 20, 1934, at the Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. They farmed north of Clear Lake until moving into Fertile in 1961, where he has lived ever since.

Levern enjoyed reading, farming, his John Deere tractors, work horses, going out to eat and visiting with his friends. He was a former member of the Fertile Consolidated School Board and 4-H Leader.

Levern is survived by a son, Larry Nelson and his wife, Donna, Hanlontown; and one daughter, Nancy Ingham and her husband, George, Swaledale; one sister, Edna Peterson, Fertile; eight grandchildren, Wendy Ingham and her fiance, Ron Wheeler; Wanda Avery and her husband, Denis; Marcia Ingham; Laura Shropshire and her husband, Randy; Marie Webb and her husband, Hugh; Christine Fagg and her husband, Ned; Cheryl Kapka and her husband, Dave; and Lonny Nelson; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jill Avery, Alex Avery, Ryan Shropshire, Amanda Shropshire, Briana Webb, Houston Webb, Harrison Webb, Courtney Fagg, Audrey Benson, Kelley Benson and Dean Kapka.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife on Jan. 29, 1987.

Charles Edward Hon was born in Des Moines. He lived most of his life in Des Moines until 1981, then moved to Mason City until 1989, when he moved to Mamouth Springs, Ark., for two years, and then returning to Des Moines. He retired in 1989, after 36 years with the Iowa National Guard. He retired as a warrant officer. At his death he was a security guard at PDI, employed by NPI. He was a member of the CB Club of Mason City.

Clara A. Vandenburg

BYRON, Ill. _ Clara A. Vandenburg, 87, formerly of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, died Monday (Sept. 8, 1997) at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, Ill.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Byron Cemetery, Byron, Ill., with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the All Saints Lutheran Church, officiating.

Clara A. Vandenburg was born Oct. 21, 1909, in Dundee, Iowa, the daughter of Orin and Eva Schreiber. She graduated from Dundee High School in Dundee, Iowa.

She married D. Gaius Vandenburg on Nov. 13, 1933, in Ottawa, Ill. They were married for 63 years prior to his passing on June 1, 1997. Clara has missed him very much.

Clara and her husband farmed for over 40 years in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, retiring in Byron, Ill., in 1996. She knew the importance of a strong family life and was a member of the Hanford Community Church during that time.

Clara is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Gene) Clubb of Byron, Ill., and Janice (Tom) Hogan of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Pauline Boll, Manchester, Iowa, and Lenore Mohr, Stillman Valley, Ill.; two brothers, Arnold Schreiber of Rockford, Ill., and Randall Schreiber of Sycamore, Ill.; three grandchildren, Terry (Barb) Clubb of Byron, Ill.; Judy Clubb of Belvidere, Ill., and Jim (Pat) Clubb, Belvidere, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Toby and Trevor Clubb, of Byron, Ill.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and neighbors mourn her passing as well.

Elsie Rejoice Hawke was born on Sept. 20, 1912, in Toronto, S.D., the daughter of Alonzo and Martha (Hoskins) Lillibridge. She graduated from the Marietta Minn., High School. She taught school in rural Sheffield, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Melvin Hawke on March 15, 1934, in Rockwell, Iowa. She received her BA in art from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, and taught school in Early, Iowa.

Later in life, she moved to Jacksonville, Texas, where she was a co-owner of a hotel-restaurant business with her daughter and son-in-law. After retiring she moved to Antlers, in 1979.

Elsie enjoyed doing church work, crocheting, knitting, painting, and anything that kept her hands busy helping other people.

She is survived by four daughters, Marlene Maffia and her husband, Jerry, of San Diego, Calif.; Phyllis Pederson and her husband, Bob, of Worthington, Minn.; Darla Densel and her husband, Roger, of Antler, Okla., and Carol Emery and her husband, Chuck, of Cannon Falls, Minn.; three sons, Adam Hawke and his wife, Maxine, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; James Hawke and his wife, Nancy, of Rapid City, S.D., and Gary Hawke and his wife, Vicki, of Ozark, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marlys Geer, and her husband, Milton, of Rockwell; and one sister-in-law, Lucille Lillibridge of Sheffield.
