STACYVILLE — Elizabeth Loecher, 96, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at the Stacyville nursing home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Shroeder and Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

 

 Dena J. Siemens

TITONKA — Dena J. Siemens, 92, of 436 Dieckman St. N.E., died Tuesday (Oct. 21, 1997) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Winter Funeral Home.

Dena J. Siemens was born March 10, 1905, in George.

Survivors include one sister, Rosella Krull of Scarville.

Dena was preceded in death by her parents, her adopted parents and two brothers.

 

 Elsie Lucille Boyer Fisher

MASON CITY — Elsie Lucille Boyer Fisher, 87, a life-long resident of Mason City, died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

 

 Arlene M. Langhoff

MASON CITY — Arlene M. Langhoff, 66, of 702 S. Tyler Ave., died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

 

 Jerry Hamilton

SHEFFIELD — Mr. Jerry Hamilton, 53, died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) at the Veteran’s Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

Services are pending at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake.

 

Lucile A. Erion

CHARLES CITY — Lucile A. Erion, 90, of the Salsbury Baptist Home and formerly a resident of 501 Spriggs St., died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens located south of Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church on Monday afternoon.

Lucile Annettie Harvey Erion was born Dec. 8, 1906, on the family farm near Charles City.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Larry Erion of Marshalltown, and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant son, two sisters and a brother.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

 

  

Ruth Olson

FOREST CITY — Ruth Olson, 95, died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Fuller and the Rev. George Kalb officiating. Burial will be in the First Baptist Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Ruth Dahcotah Olson was born on Sept. 15, 1902, in Sawyer, N.D., the daughter of Frank B. and Anna (Schramm) Pitkin. Her family moved to Forest City in 1918. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1920 as Class Valedictorian. She then taught county school for four years. On Aug. 26, 1924, she was married to Albert R. Olson and the couple farmed north of Forest City. She always took an active part in church activities and Woman’s Club in addition to daily living her Christian life.

She is survived by two sons, Marvin C. of Forest City and Dean A. and his wife, Jan, of Gun Barrell City, Texas; one daughter, Jo Ann Stroup and her husband, Bob, of Monument, Colo.; four granddaughters, Marilyn Schreiber and her husband, John, of West Concord, Minn., Connie Morrill and husband, Randy, of Elko, Minn., Kim Olson of Portsmouth, N.H., and Deanna Funk and husband, Rick, of Hudson, Wis.; one grandson, Richard M. Olson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; six great-grandchildren: Anne Schreiber, Britta and Jenna Morrill, Megan, Misty and Sean Funk; a sister, Frances Orelind of Chicago, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Lucille Pitkin of Forest City; three nieces and two nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her mother, Anna; her father, Frank; husband, Albert; brother, Milo Pitkin; brother-in-law, Robert Orelind; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Olson.

 

 Nettie L. Schrader

GARNER — Nettie L. Schrader, 94, a resident of the Concord Care Center, died Thursday (Oct. 23, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon with the Rev. Duane L. Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

The family will meet friends at 4 p.m. today at the Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon.

Nettie was born May 7, 1903, in Keosauqua.

Survivors include two sons, Gordon Schrader of Scottsdale, Ariz. and William Schrader of Garner; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, two grandsons, one great-grandson, one brother and two sisters.

 

 John F. Halstead

CHARLES CITY — John F. "Jack" Halstead, 71, a resident of 2135 Pin Oak Estates Lane, died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) in the Hospice Room at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Jack Ivey officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Quasqueton Cemetery at Quasqueton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday an hour prior to the service.

John Franklin Halstead was born March 9, 1926, at Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Charles City; a son, John Halstead of Johnston; two daughters, Nancy Halbur of Halbur and Deb Cashman of Urbandale; a sister, Joanne Mulford of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; a brother, Thomas Halstead of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa or the First Congregational Church, both of Charles City.

STACYVILLE — Elizabeth Loecher, 96, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at the Stacyville Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Meyer, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Meyer.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Church Hall with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth was born June 12, 1901, in Meyer.

Survivors include one daughter, Irene Miller of Vaceville, Calif.; two brothers, Clement Loecher of Osage and Amrose Loecher of Fond du Lac, Wis.; two brothers, Phillip Koenigs of Stacyville and Tom Koenigs of Adams, Minn.; and 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four infant children, five sisters, five brothers and one great-grandson.

 

Arlene M. Langhoff

MASON CITY — Arlene M. Langhoff, 66, of 702 S. Tyler, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorials may be given to the Arlene M. Langhoff Memorial Fund.

Arlene M. Langhoff was born Aug. 22, 1931, the daughter of John D. L. and Tena (Sandman) Pals, in Alexander. Arlene attended and graduated from Clarion High School. She worked as a pharmacy technician for North Iowa Mercy Health Center for 34 years. Arlene married William F. Langhoff on June 9, 1975, in Carson City, Nev.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, VFW Auxiliary Post No. 733 and the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include on daughter, Carla Thomazin of Mason City; two sons, Lynn Marchant and wife, Carol, of Klemme and Thomas Marchant of Mason City; eight grandchildren, Chris, Tiffany, Shauna and Shannon Thomazin, Jeff Marchant, Angie Kluckhohn and Jeremy and Jaime Marchant; one great-grandchild, Kia Marchant; two sisters, Helen Schnittjer and husband, Edward, of Clarion and Mary Isaacson and husband, Lenvil, of Melbourne; and five brothers, Arthur Pals and wife, Marge, of Dows, George Pals of Rowan, Wilbur Pals of Belmond, Herbert Pals of Belmond and Jerry Pals and wife, Eilene, of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Elsie Lucille Boyer was born Jan. 19, 1910, at Mason City, the daughter of Samuel C. and Francis (Johnson) Boyer.

On March 27, 1932, she married Lynn E. Fisher.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mason City.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Hoffman and her husband, Larry, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Karen Way and her husband, Bryan, of Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren, Eric and Evan Hoffman, Chris Way and Elizabeth Pettit; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Warner of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and one sister.

 

 

 Dennis Dean DeYounge

HAMPTON — Dennis Dean DeYounge, 56, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Neighborhood Bible Church with the Rev. Dick Parker officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon DeYounge of Hampton; son, Perry DeYounge of Hampton; daughter, Pamela DeYounge of Orange City; parents, Albert and Bertha Mae DeYounge of Little Rock; one brother, David DeYounge of Mountain Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Mary Ann Arends of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marliss VanDerZwaag of Orange City; two stepdaughters, Tawnia Kakacek of Solon and Rose Shore of Geneva; two grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

Jerry Lee Hamilton

SHEFFIELD — Jerry Lee Hamilton, 53, of Route 2, Sheffield, died Friday (Oct. 24, 1997) at the Veterans Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Following services, the body will be cremated.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials in his name.

Jerry was born on Nov. 18, 1943, in Readlyn, the son of Kenneth and Irene (Brighton) Hamilton. He attended school in Rockwell.

Jerry served in the U.S. Navy and following the service, he moved back to the family farm south of Rockwell. He worked at the Clear Lake Bakery, and later drove the Easter Seal bus.

Jerry married Linda Lamfers on July 22, 1992, in Mason City. They moved to their acreage that they presently live on in 1993.

Jerry enjoyed playing his guitar, listening to '50s-'60s rock music, working around their acreage and on his antique tractor. His greatest enjoyment was reading to his grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Linda Hamilton, rural Sheffield; son, Michael Hamilton, Cedar Falls; three stepchildren, Vernon Kluender and Katie Kluender, both of rural Sheffield; and Lisa Iowa, Mason City; two stepgrandchildren, Faith Iowa and Skylar Marshall, both of Mason City; and one sister, Janet Bronner and her husband, Roger, of Rochester, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Hamilton; one brother, Jim Hamilton; and his parents.

  

Jeanette R.Comstock

CLARION — Jeanette R. Comstock, 79, of Clarion, died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Kellogg officiating. The body has been cremated.

There will be no visitation. Willim Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette Ruth Comstock was born Jun 1, 1918, at Webster City.

She is survived by one sister, Bernice Lammers of Clarion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters.

DUMONT — Jerilyn Buseman, 49, of Dumont, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Dumont Reformed Church, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Jerilyn Buseman was born July 1, 1948, in Hampton.

Survivors include her husband, Lee Buseman, Dumont; one son, Troy Buseman, Dumont; three daughters, Jaci Lewis, Dumont; Kathy Lewis, Bristow, and Jenni Kalkwarf, Aplington; five grandchildren; her father, Dale Hearn, Cherokee Village, Ark.; and one brother, William Hearn, Dumont.

She was preceded in death by her mother and paternal and maternal grandparents.

  

William 'Ed' Birkholz

SHEFFIELD — William "Ed" Birkholz, 81, of Sheffield, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion-St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home.

William "Ed" Birkholz was born on Sept. 6, 1916, in Oakwood, near Marble Rock, the son of Herman and Anna (Voelker) Birkholz. He attended country school near Oakwood.

Following school, he began farming with his father, raising hogs, milk cattle and crops. He was united in marriage to Irene Priebe on Sept. 7, 1940, in Spencer. They made their home on the family farm until moving in 1956 west of Charles City, where they continued to farm. In 1970 they moved to their present location southwest of Sheffield where they farmed until retirement.

Ed enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, woodworking and going hunting and fishing. Together they enjoyed traveling to Deer River, Minn., where they spent summers fishing and Harlingen, Texas, where they spent many winters.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, of Sheffield; one daughter, Patricia Will and her husband, Marnie of Brewster, Minn.; and one son, David Birkholz and his wife, Mary Lou, of Palestine, Texas; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

MASON CITY — Goldie M. Paulson, 91, of Mason City, died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

MASON CITY — Mildred K. Gustafson, 89, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.

CHARLES CITY — Pearl Taves, 85, 1903 Cleveland St., died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at the home of her daughter in Solon.

Alice M. Baggs

GARNER — Alice M. Baggs, of Garner, died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St.

Alice Margaret Baggs, the daughter of Lewis and Julia (Venson) Peterson, was born on a farm near Lake Mills.

She graduated from Lake Mills High School and spent three years in nursing training at Lutheran Deaconess Hospital, Chicago.

On Sept. 1, 1934, she was married to William Lowell Baggs at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.

They moved to Garner where her husband worked at Hancock County National Bank. They retired on Jan. 1, 1978, and moved to Naples, Fla. Bill passed away on March 9, 1991.

In 1992, Alice returned to Garner to be near her family. She enjoyed her family, friends, golfing, bowling, playing bridge and fishing.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a bowling league and the Garner Golf and Country Club.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Alice Greiman and husband, Clayton, Garner; Helen Jean Streyle and her husband, Robert, of Rochester, Minn., and Virginia Mae Ginsberg and her husband, Dr. James, of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son-in-law, Dr. Myron L. Albertson of Hudson; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; daughter, Dorothy Elaine Albertson; grandson, Aaron Lowell Ginsberg; great-granddaughter, Lauren Nicole Streyle; parents; three sisters, Jessie Van Den Berg, Louella Boehnke and Carmen Lee; and an infant brother, Jessie Peterson.

Levetta F. Nicholas

ROCK FALLS — Levetta F. Nicholas, 87, of 2 N. Market St., died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Rock Falls United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Interment will be in Rock Falls Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Levetta F. Nicholas Memorial Fund.

Levetta was born Nov. 14, 1909, at Rock Falls, daughter of William D. And Ethel (Schnartz) Edgar.

She attended and graduated from Rock Falls High School and attended and graduated from Drake University. She taught school at Rock Falls for 37 1/2 years.

She was married to Lillard Nicholas on May 25, 1945, at the Little Brown Church.

She was a life-long resident of Rock Falls. She got a lot of enjoyment out of watching and feeding the birds.

She was a life-long member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Women, Birthday Club and LUGA Club (Let Us Get Acquainted).

She is survived by her husband, Lillard Nicholas, Rock Falls; sister, Geraldine Hyde, Rock Falls; brother, Roland Edgar, Manly; sisters-in-law, Bernice Edgar of Rock Falls, and Doris Morasch, Riceville; 17 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents and brothers, David Edgar and Russell Edgar.

 

  

Laura Shafer

NEWTON, Ill. — Laura (Mrs. Ed) Shafer, 39, died of cancer at her home at 811 W. Jourdan, Newton, Ill., on Monday, Oct. 20, 1997.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, Ill., with Pastor Jamie Havens of the First Assembly of God Church delivering the message. Burial was at the Jewett Cemetery, Jewett, Ill. Casket bearers were Douglas Hanson, M/Sgt. Kenneth Hanson, Jeremy Hanson, Robert Thiemann, Floyd DeLawyer and Richard Hanson.

Laura was born Oct. 2, 1958, at Klemme, Iowa, to Larry A. and Eva M. (Thiemann) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanual Reformed United Church of Christ, at Klemme, and moved with her family to the Belmond-Goodell area in 1964.

She graduated from the Belmond High School, Belmond, Iowa, in 1977 and from Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa, in 1978. She worked for the Berkland & Houser Law Firm in Belmond, Iowa, until her marriage to Harry "Ed" Shafer on Dec. 21, 1980, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, in Klemme, Iowa. After their marriage they moved to Montrose, Ill.; where she worked for Fedders at Effingham, Ill.

Ed and Laura and their family moved to Newton, Ill., in 1989. She started working for E.R. Moore and continued working there until the time of her death.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and her many friends, camping and being a Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by her husband, Harry "Ed" Shafer of Newton, Ill; son, John Shafer, at home; daughter, Jennifer Shafer, at home; stepdaughter, Kimberly Whitnell and her husband, Rick, of Florissant, Mo.; her parents, Larry A. Mildred K. Gustafson

MASON CITY — Mildred K. Gustafson, 89, 302 Second St. N.E., died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Doug Anderson and the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to the Mildred K. Gustafson Memorial Fund.

Mildred M. Kuhlemeier Gustafson was born March 1, 1908, in Rudd, the daughter of Arthur A. and Mabel G. (Moore) Kuhlemeier. She graduated from Rockford High School and Hamilton's School of Business.

Mrs. Gustafson worked for Beck Brothers Real Estate and Insurance Company for 20 years, retiring in 1949. She was the first woman in Iowa to hold a real estate license.

On July 3, 1949, she married Dr. Lloyd Gustafson in Rockford. During his ministry in the United Methodist Church, she helped him serve congregations in Mason City, Park Ridge and Aurora, Ill., where he was district superintendent for six years.

Mrs. Gustafson was a member of First United Methodist Church, Circle KB, PEO Chapter DZ and a past member of Women's Club, a past board member of Friends of the Library, and the care review commission of Good Shepherd Health Center.

She also served on the Hospice Board and the United Methodist Women Boards. In 1974 Mrs. Gustafson retired to Mason City where she had resided since that time.

Survivors include a brother, Horace H. "Pat" Kulemeier and his wife, Luci, of Hubbard ; special friend, J. Ross Oliver of Mason City; 11 nieces and nephews; stepdaughter, Janice Allen of Springfield, Ill.; two stepgrandsons, Michael Allen and Patrick Clay; one stepgranddaughter, Joni Wheeling; sister-in-law, Jean Crowell of Mason City; sister-in-law, Esther (Cy) Bauman of Cottage Grove, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Harold and Herbert Kuhlemeier; and sister-in-law, Patty.

 

 William P. Francis

BRITT — William P. Francis, 58, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 1997) at the Manatee Memorial Hospital, Ellenton, Fla.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

The family will greet family and friends after 12:30 p.m. Nov. 8 until time of services.

William "Bill," the son of Donald and Cleo Davis Francis, was born on Jan. 26, 1939, at Britt. He spent his childhood in Britt, , Mason City and Peoria, Ill. He was a painter most of his life and lived in the Peoria, Ill., area until 1986 when he moved to Florida, where he resided until his death.

He is survived by three children, Cheryl Brewley, Wade Haskett and Cindy Borg, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Dalton Francis and his wife, Charlene, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; James Francis, of Faribault, Minn.; and John Francis and his wife, Kathy, of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

 Mamie Burcham

ROCKFORD — Funeral services for Mamie (Van Eaton) Burcham, 91, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Rudd United Methodist Church, with Pastors Deborah J. Stowers and Richard C. Pippert officiating.

Mrs. Burcham passed away Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, with the family greeting friends.

Memorials may be directed to the Rudd United Methodist Church in memory of Mamie Burcham.

Mamie (Van Eaton) Burcham was born May 3, 1906, in Hamburg, the daughter of James Oscar and Emma Jane (Pingree) Van Eaton. She grew up in the Waterloo area and graduated from East High School.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with a teaching certificate. She taught primary grades in the Blairsburg school, where she met Homer Burcham. They were married on Aug. 28, 1928, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

The family moved to Rudd in 1935. Over the years, she served as Sunday School teacher, Cub Scout den mother and bookkeeper at the Rudd Farmers Co-op.

She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Federated Women's Clubs and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two sons, Robert of Mesa, Ariz.; and William of Seattle, Wash.; four grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and one cousin, Gerald Pingree of Stewartville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer; her parents; three brothers, Wert, Clyde and James; her daughter-in-law, Lynne Burcham; and her great-grandson, Steven.

 

 Everett C. Wood

HOUSTON, Texas — Everett C. Wood, 77, of Houston, died Saturday (Oct. 25, 1997) after a long illness.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at the VA Houston National Cemetery, Houston. Arrangements are being handled by the Pasadena Funeral Home, Pasadena, Texas.

Everett was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Clear Lake, Iowa, to Jay and Iva Wood. Serving in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946, Mr. Wood was one of an elite gunnery/marksman group conducting training exhibitions at bases throughout the United States.

He was a successful businessman in the automobile dealership industry in Mason City and Des Moines, Iowa, before retiring to Houston.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Vivian (Forrester) Wood of Houston; son, Timothy C. Wood, wife Tena and granddaughter, Nicholette, of Katy, Texas; daughter, Tamara Kathy Wood of Phoenix, Ariz.; and sister, Doris Richmond of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Iva Davis; father, Jay Wood; stepfather, Walter Davis; brother, Wayne Wood, all of Mason City, Iowa; sister, Izetta Greenman of Glendale, Calif.; and sister, Madge Clifton of Stockton, Calif.

 

 Stanley Marion Pedersen

COULTER — Stanley Marion Pedersen, 88, of Coulter, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Stanley Pedersen was born Sept. 5, 1909, at rural Coulter.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Pedersen, Coulter; daughter, Pat Ann Towne, Harvard, Ill.; son, Larry Dean Pedersen, Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

CHARLES CITY — Pearl Taves, 85, formerly of 1903 Cleveland St., died Monday (Oct. 27, 1997) at the home of her daughter in Solon.

Pearl Amanda Wickham Taves was born Jan. 7, 1912, at Crandon, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and four sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and one sister.

MASON CITY — Wayne Ray Kuchar, 74, of 87 Mission Drive, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manly, where full military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Wayne Ray Kuchar was born July 7, 1923, in Manly, son of John and Carolyn (Jansen) Kuchar. He married Darlene Snopek on June 25, 1960.

Wayne grew up in Manly and attended school there. He served in the Army during World War II where he was a surgical technician. He recently received the Liberty medal. Wayne drove truck for Gamble-Robinson for 38 years until retiring in 1983.

He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He also was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Kuchar, Mason City; one daughter, Pauline Ragsdale and her husband, Russ, Northwood; two grandsons, Brian Jacobs and his wife, Traci, Ventura, and Mark Jacobs, Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth Kuchar; and one sister, Margaret Grady.

Goldie Paulson was born March 2, 1906, in Mason City, the daughter of Lavelle and Luella (Hornberger) Reynolds.

Goldie married Andrew Paulson on Dec. 20, 1926, in Rockwell.

Goldie lived in the North Iowa area her entire life.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen Halsne of Clear Lake; son, Bob Paulson and his wife, Ardis, of Mason City; daughter, Emily Reab and her husband, William, of Appleton, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosalee Bjorklund of Renton, Wash.; and one brother, Lavern Reynolds of Yucca Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three granddaughters, four brothers and three sisters.

 

Anna Lubkeman

SHEFFIELD — Anna Lubkeman, 97, a resident of the Sheffield Community for the past 41 years, died Monday afternoon (Oct. 27, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Zion St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kent A. Mechler officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Anna M. Lubkeman, daughter of George and Emma Brammer, was born May 26, 1900, in Franklin County. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church at Beed's Lake. Anna attended a rural school in Franklin County.

She was united in marriage to Karl W. Lubkeman at Latimer on Nov. 26, 1924. They farmed in the Chapin, Latimer and Sheffield areas until they retired in Sheffield in 1966. In October of 1988, she entered the Sheffield Care Center. Her husband died on Jan. 14, 1990.

Anna was a member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield. While health permitted, she was an active member of the ALCW at Zion, Sheffield Cemetery Society, Franklin County Historical Society, Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary and took an active part in the Sheffield Centennial.

Anna is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Mavis) Claypool, Mrs. Delos (Alice) Dohlman and one son, Melvin Lubkeman, all of Hampton; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise Lubkeman of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl; a great-grandchild, Peter Ross Claypool; her parents; a sister, Clara Olk; and a brother, Walter Brammer.

James 'Jim' Otto Jerde

CLARION — Jim Otto Jerde died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 1997) at home at the age of 54 years, 10 months, and 20 days.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church, with Pastor Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be in Ever- green Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Willim Funer- al Home.

James Otto Jerde was born April 9, 1943, at Clarion, the son of Melvin L. and Mabel (Langerud) Jerde. He was bap- tized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1961.

He was united in marriage to Janet Johnson on March 16, 1979, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He operated the New Home Cafe and the Cornerstone Restaurant for many years. He owned and operated North Iowa Real Estate & Appraisal.

He was a member of Rotary; Shriners; Clarion Development Commission in which he was a past president; a member of the Board of Directors of Clarmond Country Club; board member of Parks Department; member of Clarion Chamber of Commerce; Wright County Economic Devel- opment Commission; Wright County Compensation Board; and served on the Clarion City Council.

Jim received the Outstanding Long Term Service Award in 1996 for his contributions to the com- munity of Clarion.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; son, Joe; daughters, Angela Oestreich and her husband, Craig, of Silver Lake, Minn.; and Aimee Johnson and friend Justin Reiner, of Hutchinson, Minn.; grandson, Quentin Reiner; sister, Joan Potter and husband, Monte Potter of Iowa Falls; Aunt Myrth Jerde of Clarion; nephew, Tod Pot- ter, of Mesa, Ariz.; niece, Katy Ellingson of Phoenix, Ariz.; father-in-law, Clyde Buckley of Fertile; and brother-in-law, David Buckley and his wife, Marty, of Corsicana, Texas; nieces, nephews, cousins,and many good friends.

We will all remember "Jerd" as someone who made Clarion a bet- ter place to live, who unselfishly gave his time, talent and money to further the betterment of this community. He was a friend to all — young and old.

Faye I. Vance was born Feb. 18, 1926, in Fertile, to George and Amy (Humphrey) Raymond.

She married Ralph "Bob" Vance on Aug. 28, 1972, in Nevada, Iowa.

She had lived in Huxley for 25 years. She worked at Bourns until they closed. She was a counter server at Donutland in Ames until 1996, at which time she retired due to failing health.

She was a member of the Trini- ty United Methodist Church in Huxley.

She is survived by her hus- band, Ralph "Bob" Vance of Hux- ley; one daughter, Kelly Hunter of Cambridge; one son, Rick Haberkorn of Story City; three stepdaughters, Jodi Hall of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Bobbie Rae Crow of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mikki Wheeler of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; four great-grand- children; one sister, Juanita Stewart of Charles City; and two brothers, Dale Raymond, Oshkosh, Wis., and Burrell Ray- mond of Orchard.

William 'Bill' Wayne Heiny

PLYMOUTH — William "Bill" Wayne Heiny, 75, of rural Ply- mouth, died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 1997) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, in Plymouth, with mil- itary honors by Our Buddies V.F.W. Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly, with a public Scripture- rosary service at 7 p.m.

William "Bill" Wayne Heiny was born on Jan. 19, 1922, in Northwood, the son of Dr. Claude R. and Florence (Weidenhamer) Heiny.

He attended and received his education in the Northwood School System; graduating from Northwood High School in 1939. Bill also attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. Upon completion, he worked at Northern Pump in Minneapolis, until his enlistment in the Army- Air Corps on March 15, 1943, at Fort Snelling, Minn. He served overseas during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge on Feb. 8, 1946, at the Jefferson Barracks, Mo. After his honorable dis- charge, he returned to Northwood where he operated a body shop and service station. He also served as deputy sheriff in Worth County.

He was united in marriage to Irene Schultz, of Albert Lea, Minn., on Feb. 1, 1945. After their marriage together, they moved to a farm near Plymouth where he farmed for 32 years and also worked for 21 years for the White Farm in Charles City until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, going to gun shows, auc- tions, traveling and camping, but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ply- mouth, life member of Our Bud- dies V.F.W. Memorial Post #6779 in Northwood, and also served on the Bohemian Cemetery Associa- tion Board in Plymouth.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Irene Heiny, of Ply- mouth; son, Mark Heiny and his wife, Jane, and their children, William and Anna Heiny of Nora Springs; a son, Claude Heiny of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Janine Rayburn and her chil- dren, Shae, Shawn and Shanna, of Plymouth; son, Dan Heiny of Plymouth; one sister, Becky John- ston of Northwood; one nephew, Stephen Johnston and his wife, Catherine, and their children, Rabekah, Emily and Spencer of Golden Valley, Minn.; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Chester H. Steele

LAKE MILLS — Chester H. Steele, 79, of 510 S. Winnebago, died Thursday (Oct. 30, 1997) at Naeve Hospital, Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Lutheran Ceme- tery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Chester Harry Steele was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Alden Town- ship, Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Vio- let, Lake Mills; one daughter, Cheryl Plotts of Lyle, Minn.; one son, Steven Steele, Lake Mills; six grandchildren; three stepgrand- children; two stepgreat-grand- children; one brother, Raymond Steele of Albert Lea, Minn.; and one sister, Shirley Gold of Austin, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Shirley Mae Moor

HAMPTON — Shirley Mae Moor, 74, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Hamp- ton, with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema- Vogel Funeral Home.

Shirley Mae Moor was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Rockford.

Survivors include her husband, James Moor, Hampton, three daughters, Shela Harding, Hampton; Linda Fraser, Meser- vey, and Dona Sticha, Burchinal; three sons, Michael True, Clear Lake; Paul Moor, Hampton, and Jack Moor, Clear Lake; 20 grand- children; and 20 great-grandchil- dren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sis- ter and one granddaughter.

 

Mabel Tjarks

TITONKA — Mabel Tjarks, 91, of Titonka, died Thursday (Oct. 30, 1997) at the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Unit- ed Methodist Church, with the Rev. Timm Wilkin officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery, rural Titon- ka.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry- Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Mabel Tjarks was born Feb. 13, 1906, in German Valley.

Survivors include two grand- children, four great-grandchil- dren, one great-great-grand- daughter and one sister, Anna Howe, Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, three brothers and one sister.

 

 

Harold E. Schreckengost

MASON CITY — Harold E. Schreckengost, 77, of 1464 Fourth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in the Elm- wood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylva- nia Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Harold E. Schreckengost Memori- al Fund.

Harold was born on Nov. 30, 1919, at home in Mason City, the son of C. Edward and Mary (Mallo) Schreckengost. He attended school in Mason City.

Harold was inducted into the U.S. Army in December of 1942, training at Camp Claiborne, La., and Camp Howze, Texas, with the 103rd Infantry Division reaching the rank of Tech. Sgt.

In 1944 he landed in Marseille, France. Along with most of his company, he was taken prisoner by the German Army on Dec. 2, 1944. Harold spent time in sever- al camps while a P.O.W. and was liberated May 3, 1945.

Upon returning from the ser- vice, he was associated with Boomhower Hardware for many years.

Harold married Genevieve Frantz on Jan. 15, 1945, in the Old First United Methodist Church parsonage. Genevieve died in 1984.

Harold then married Lydia Kalous on May 10, 1989, in the Chapel of the Holy Child at Beth- lehem Lutheran Church. Lydia died in 1996.

Harold loved to travel, loved doing crafts, or anything with his hands. He was the neighborhood handyman. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his backyard.

He was involved in organizing reunions for members of his old Co. B and spent many hours searching for some of them. Harold was always proud of the fact that he lived his entire life on the same piece of ground he was born on.

He was a member of the Beth- lehem Lutheran Church, where he previously served on the Board of Trustees and presently on the Board of Elders. He was commander of the Northeast Iowa Chapter of Ex-Prisoners of War, the American Ex-Prisoners of War, 103rd Division of W.W.II Association, V.F.W. , A.A.R.P. and R.S.V.P.

Survivors include his daughter, Susan Christensen of Mason City; stepson, Robert R. Kalous Jr. and his wife, Lenora, of Med- ical Lake, Wash.; six stepgrand- children; 16 stepgreat-grandchil- dren; one stepgreat-great-grand- child; as well as numerous other family members and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; and a sister, Iona Mae, in infancy.

 

Blanche E. Lovejoy

OSAGE — Blanche E. Lovejoy, 81, of Osage, died Thursday (Oct. 30, 1997) at Hennepin County Medical Center Burn Unit in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Newland officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Blanche was born May 9, 1916, in Bellefield, S.D.

Survivors include one daughter, Delores Badker of Osage; two sons, Donald Baker, Plymouth, and Henry Lovejoy, Osage; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Miller, St. Ansgar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.

 

 

Grace Tena 'Tootie' Debner

GREENE — Funeral services for Grace Tena "Tootie" Debner, 66, of 13471 110th St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lance Kittleson and the Rev. Perry Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will con- tinue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Grace Tena Junker was born Aug. 6, 1931, at Waverly Junc- tion, near Janesville, a daughter of Tony and Grace (Perton) Junker and died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 1997) at the Covenant Med- ical Center in Waterloo of cancer.

She received her education in the rural schools near Aredale and graduated from the Greene High School in 1949.

On Nov. 27, 1949, she was unit- ed in marriage to Dean Kenneth Debner at the Bennezette Wes- leyan Church near Aredale.

They farmed in the rural Bris- tow and Greene area their entire marriage. Grace worked for the Aredale Store for several years.

Grace was actively involved in the farming operation as well as being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cared for the needs of her family. She enjoyed gardening and sharing its har- vest with neighbors and friends.

She was baptized and con- firmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on March 26, 1950.

Living family members include her husband, Dean of Greene; two daughters, Sherry and her husband, Dave Kubalski, of Ack- ley, and Lyna Debner of Mason City; one son, Gary and his wife, Mary Jo Debner, of Keosauqua; nine grandchildren, Shyla, Stephanie, Annette, Angie, Carl, Joshua, Jeremy, Brad and Trina; two sisters, Darlene Palmer of Nora Springs and Karen Hadde- man of The Colony, Texas; two brothers, Fred Junker of Cedar Falls and Robert Junker, Meser- vey; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ervin Hansen

SAN GABRIEL, Calif. — Ervin Hansen died Sunday (Oct. 25, 1997) in San Gabriel, having reach the age of 89 years.

He was born May 16, 1908. He graduated from Crystal Lake, Iowa, High School and continued his education at Hamilton Busi- ness College in Mason City, Iowa.

He then worked as an accoun- tant at the First National Bank in Minneapolis, until he enlisted in the Army Officers Training Division. He was stationed in El Centro, Calif., where his wife, Minnie, joined him.

After he was honorably dis- charged, he worked for Southern California Gas Company and when the company transferred him to the headquarters in Pasadena, they moved to San Gabriel, where their daughter Karen was born.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Loda and her husband, Ralph, and granddaughter, Cindi Loda; as well as his sister, Velma Kallestad of Belmond, Iowa; a nephew, Jim Peterson; and nieces, Marilyn Korte, Inez Vest- weber and Clair Wetterling.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie; his parents, one brother, Harvey Hansen; and one sister, Julia Peterson.

CLARION — Mildred E. Woodin, 64, of Clarion, died Thursday (Oct. 30, 1997) at the Clarion Care Center.
