Edith Oldham

CHARLES CITY — Edith Oldham, 96, a former resident of 75 Cedar Terrace S., died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. by the Rosary Society and the 3rd Order of Carmelites and the parish Vigil Scripture Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

C. Edith Murray Oldham was born Oct. 2, 1901, at Dougherty, the daughter of James and Ellen C. Gossman Murray. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 1920, and on Sept. 15, 1924, she and Francis L. Oldham were married at Charles City.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, the 3rd Order of Carmelites, the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, was a Gold Star Mothe and a Navy Mother and was a member of the Senior Citizens and the American Association of Catholic Women. She loved her family and friends. Her church played an important role in her life.

Living family members include five sons and their wives, Mike and Darlene of Dubuque, Jack and Barb of Mason City, Alan and Marion of Billings, Mont., Donald "Rick" and Peggy of Cedar Rapids and Paul and Janet of Algona; a daughter-in-law, Edie Oldham-Schon of Dubuque; and three daughters, Sister Francesca of Decorah, Kathy and her husband, Larry Phearman, of Mason City, and Imelda and her husband, Charles Housh, of Monee, Ill. There are 36 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, in 1972; two sons, James and Joe; a daughter, Sister Mary Ellen; a brother; and two sisters.

Nina Pearson

CEDAR FALLS — Nina Pearson, 87, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at her home.

Laura Ann Papouchis

MASON CITY — Laura Ann Papouchis, 2-year-old daughter of Bill and Ann Papouchis of 15589 317th St., died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Neb.

MASON CITY — Robert D. Werstein, 48, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) at his home in Las Vegas, Nev. Services were held Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997 ) in Las Vegas. Interment was at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev. A local memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Covenant Church, Highway 18 East. The Rev. Rich Murray will officiate.

Robert was born July 14, 1949, in Mason City, the son of Sebastian and Elizabeth Werstein. He attended Mason City schools and graduated in 1967.

Rob served with the 31st Infantry in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, where he received several medals, including an Army Commendation Medal and three bronze stars. Following his discharge, he returned to Mason City where he worked for several years at Northwestern States Portland Cement Company.In 1985, Rob moved to Las Vegas where he joined the Southern Nevada Operating Engineers. He completed the apprenticeship program in 1989, and was named outstanding apprentice in 1990.

Rob is survived by his wife, Kathy Werstein of Las Vegas; two daughters, Laura Werstein of Lamoni and Tina Werstein of Mason City; one son, Jeff Werstein of Mason City; one sister, Betty Reich of Mason City; three brothers, Francis and Jack Werstein of Mason City and Charles Beer of Albert Lea, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Rob was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerry; and one nephew, Chad.>Rob's wife, family, friends and co-workers are deeply saddened by their loss.

Norma Marie Bolk

SHEFFIELD — Mrs. Walter (Norma Marie) Bolk, 86, of 119 N. Sixth St., died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Norma Marie Oelkers was born Jan. 26, 1912, the eldest daughter of J. William and Augusta (Johansen) Oelkers. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the former Zion Lutheran Church in Sheffield. She graduated from Sheffield High School with the Class of 1930. On Aug. 23, 1930, she was united in marriage to Walter C. Bolk, also of Sheffield. Almost their entire married life was spent in the Sheffield area, first on a farm, then in town. Walter served in the Navy during World War II and for a short time Norma resided in California to be near him. She was employed for many years for the Strouse Hatchery, the Cedar Valley Produce Company and Sheffield Produce Company, before retiring.

In 1948, they built their present home at 119 N. Sixth St. where she and Walter enjoyed their flowers and garden. They also loved to travel and fish and they spent many hours enjoying their hobby.

Norma was a member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing quilt pieces during "Do Days" with other ladies of the church. She also loved to crochet and do counted cross stitch, sharing her talent in the gifts she gave over the years to her family of nieces and nephews, with whom she enjoyed their visits.

She and Walter were privileged to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 1980.

After the death of Walter, Norma continued to enjoy her home until failing health necessitated her move to the Sheffield Care Center in February of 1996.

She is survived by one sister, Margaret Younge and her husband, Luther, of Sheffield; 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Beyer and Mrs. E.A. (Minnie) Combs; two brothers, Henry A. and William (in infancy); and one nephew, Dennis Beyer.

Jeremy Hangensick

HAMPTON — Jeremy Hangensick, 14, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

MASON CITY — John J. Bombella, 70, of 808 S. Van Buren Ave., died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at his home.

Mabel V. Palmer

HAMPTON — Mabel V. Palmer, 83, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Mabel V. Palmer was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Hampton.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Palmer of Hampton; one daughter, Janice Klingenberg of Hampton; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Frank "Pat" Tickal Jr.

MASON CITY — Frank "Pat" Tickal Jr., 72, of 111 14th St. N.W., died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Miles Grismore of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Community Kitchen in Pat's name.

Pat was born Sept. 29, 1925, the son of Frank and Mary (Yeast) Tickal in Mason City. He served his country during World War II and Vietnam in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the San Juan-Marne Post 733 V.F.W., Mason City. Pat was a voracious reader and also enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He loved dancing and listening to country music, watching professional wrestling and was an avid stamp collector and dealer. Auctions were also a pastime when he wasn't spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Pat is survived by seven children, Patty Tickal of Clear Lake, Deanna Tickal of Idaho, Lisa Harrison of Texas, Mike and his wife, Carmen Tickal, and Brandon Tickal, all of Mason City, Trace Tickal of Des Moines and Rory Tickal and his wife, Denise, of New Jersey; one sister, Kathryn, and her husband, Dean Suby, of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Jeff Tickal and Dick and his wife, Joann Tickal, all of Mason City; and numerous grandchildren.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Hubacher and Rosie Spinka.

Duane T. Bauman

ALLISON — Funeral services for Duane T. Bauman, 59, of 17837 Highway 14, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and will continue Tuesday at the church beginning one hour before services.

Duane Thomas Bauman was born Dec. 16, 1937, in Waverly, a son of Thomas Theodore and Laura Louise (Wubbena) Bauman, and died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of complications from cancer.

He received his education in the Jackson Township schools and graduated from Allison High School in 1956. He attended Iowa State University for a short time. Following the death of his father, he started farming at an early age.

On Feb. 6, 1958, he was united in marriage to Georgette Kay Freeseman at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. Duane and Georgette had made their home on the family farm since their marriage and became the parents of five children.

Duane had been engaged in farming his entire life and also sold Northrup King Seed for several years in the Allison area. Since 1972, he had been engaged in the real estate and farm management business. He was a member of the Butler Bremer Chickasaw Board of Realtors and the Butler County Inheritance Tax Appraisal Board. He was an active member and former leader in 4-H for many years.

He was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison where he had served on the church council, and was a former Sunday school superintendent for many years.

Duane will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and one who enjoyed farming as being close to God and nature. His pastimes included collecting antiques and refinishing furniture.

Living family members include his loving wife, Georgette, of Allison; three daughters and their husbands, Gwenda Bauman of Lakewood, Colo., and Denise and Lon Friesth and Donita and Owen Greenough, all of Urbandale; two sons and their spouses, Leon and Linda Bauman of Olathe, Kan., and Jason and Kelly Bauman of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Tana, Michael, Lisa, Adam and Eric Friesth, Trevor Bauman, Austin Greenough and Taylor Bauman; and one brother, Dale, and his wife, Rita Bauman, of Ames. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy and one nephew, Kyle Bauman.

John J. Bombella

MASON CITY — John J. Bombella, 70, of 808 S. Van Buren Ave., died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with a flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m.

John J. Bombella was born Nov. 26, 1926, in Des Moines, son of Joseph and Rose (Ramierz) Bombella. He married Phyllis E. Badker in December of 1947.

John attended Mason City schools and then worked on the railroad until he served in the Navy during World War II. He then worked at Mason City Brick and Tile and at International Minerals for over 40 years and at United Contractors doing bridge construction until retiring.

John enjoyed carpentry, fishing and walking. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Bombella, Mason City; three children, John Bombella, Evansdale; Sharon Rubio and her husband, Joe, Mason City, and Linda Bombella, Mason City; one grandson, Matt Bombella, Evansdale; two sisters, Juanita Miller and her husband, Jay, Mason City, and Esther Acosta and her husband, David, of Mason City; two brothers, Phillip Bombella and his wife, Gladys, Mason City, and Ben Bombella and his wife, Judy, Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Bombella; and two brothers, Tony and Joe Bombella.

Juanita Clark

BANCROFT — Juanita Clark, 85, of Bancroft, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. Altar Society rosary and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Juanita Clark was born May 31, 1912, at Ledyard.

Survivors include five children, Dr. James Clark of Tallahassee, Fla.; Thomas Clark, Des Moines; Jan Lancelot, St. Joseph, Mich.; Richard Clark of Kanas City, Kan.; and Mary Cacciatore of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. Thomas Underkofler, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Clarence R. Canaday

ALGONA — Clarence R. Canaday, 78, of Algona, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Don Seegar officiating. Interment will be in East Lawn Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Hagg-Turner Post #90 and V.F.W. Post #2541.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with military graveside services conducted by the American Legion Hagg-Turner Post #90 and V.F.W. Post #2541.

Clarence R. Canaday was born March 7, 1919, in Ottumwa.

Survivors include his wife, Verona, of Algona; three sons, Russell Canaday, of Irvington; Steven Canaday of Marshalltown, and Donald Canaday of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one daughter, Gloria Moulton of Algona; one stepdaughter, Linda Petersen, Algona; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eileen Kunzman, Douds, and Velma Brady, Cedar Rapids; and one brother, Roy Canaday, Douds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Sharon K. Anderson

HAMPTON — Sharon K. Anderson, 46, of Hampton, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa in Hampton, in her memory.

Sharon K. Anderson was born April 5, 1951, in Hampton.

Survivors include her husband, Bryan Anderson, Hampton; one stepdaughter, Meggon Anderson, Buffalo Center; one stepson, Logan Anderson, Buffalo Center; her parents, Larry and Nettie Chaffin, Hampton, and one sister, Marlene Harmon, Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Jeremy A. Hagensick

HAMPTON — Jeremy A. Hagensick, 14, of Hampton, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City, from injuries received in a four-wheeler accident east of Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Jeremy A. Hagensick was born July 29, 1983, in Hampton.

Survivors include his parents, Allyn and Laura Hagensick, Hampton; one sister, Jessica Hagensick, Hampton; maternal grandmother, Myrna Yakel, Hampton; paternal grandparents, Cletus and Irma Hagensick, Monona; and maternal great-grandmother, Alice Stock of Chapin.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather.

Matthew Jay Hamlin

SIOUX CITY — Matthew Jay Hamlin, infant son of Brenda Sue Hamlin of Sioux City, formerly of Mason City, was carried tenderly on the wings of angels into the open arms of Jesus on Oct. 1, 1997.

Matthew was born on Sept. 30, 1997, in Sioux City. He blessed his mother's life with his presence, and even though Jesus called him home in just 30 short hours, he will always and forever be his mother's "Gift from God," as his name states.

A graveside service was held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at Whiting.

Pearson Wood Funeral Home, Onawa, was in charge of arrangements.

He will be cherished in the hearts of his survivors, his mother, Brenda Sue Hamlin; grandparents, Don and Sally Hamlin; two aunts, Bev and her husband, Jim McCoy; Patsy and her husband, Bill Berneman; one uncle, Chris and his wife, Heather Hamlin, all of Mason City; great-grandmother, Leona Bergstrom, Independence; cousins, Miranda Neuroth, Chris McCoy, Karen Berneman and Nick Hamlin, all of Mason City, and Mike McCoy, of Rockford; along with other cousins, Dustin, Crisann, Duncan, Dallas and Abigail, all of Mason City, and Casey and Cody of Rockford.

He was greeted in heaven by his great-grandmother, Rose Hamilin, who will care for him until God reunites him with his mother.

Dorothy M. Swaim

MASON CITY — Dorothy M. Swaim, 88, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Monday (Oct. 6, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Herbert Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

MASON CITY — Laura Ann Papouchis, 2year-old daughter of Bill and Ann Papouchis, of 15589 317th St., died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with Father Robert Towner officiating. Following the service, Laura's body will be cremated at the Memorial Park Crematory.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The family requests that memorials be given to the Ronald McDonald Houses in Iowa City, 730 Hawkins Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52246 and Omaha, Neb., 620 38th Ave. S., Omaha, Neb. 68198. The family would also like to encourage all their friends and family members to become organ donors.

Laura was born May 9, 1995, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, the daughter of Bill and Ann (Ames) Papouchis.

Laura was very stubborn, but happy which was indicated in her smile no matter what she had been through. She enjoyed playing with her best friend and sister, Alexis, in the sand. Watching and trying to catch bubbles that were blown around her, eating popcorn, and Chee-tos and playing with her favorite white bear consumed her precious time. One would often hear her say, "Uuhh, Baby" when playing. She also loved to watch the "Vegetable Tales" video with all the bright colors. Laura made many friends while being treated at the University of Iowa and the University of Nebraska Hospitals.

Laura is survived by her parents, Bill and Ann Papouchis; two sisters, Melissa and Alexis, all of Mason City; maternal grandparents, Skip and Bonnie Ames of Ventura; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Plantz; maternal aunt and uncle Janel Ames and Dan Ames; paternal aunts and uncles, Jim and Cindy Papouchis, John and Chris Papouchis, George and Linda Papouchis, Katherine Castelline and Eugene and Helen Durant.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Clarence Plantz; paternal grandparents, Tony and Flora Papouchis, and maternal great-grandparents, Harold and Ruth Ames.

Eugene C. Schneider

BURT — Eugene C. Schneider, 51, of Burt, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday St. John's Catholic Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at the Wilson Funeral Home, Burt, with a 3 p.m. Guild rosary and a Scripture reading at 7 p.m.

Eugene C. Schneider was born Jan. 14, 1946, in Swea City.

Survivors include his wife, Janice; one son, Eugene R. Schneider, Algona; two daughters, Kim Brood, Titonka, and Suzy Page, Algona; five grandchildren; his parents, Elmer J. and Hilda Schneider, Algona; five brothers, Elmer Schneider, Larry Schneider, both of Algona; Anthony Schneider, Osakis, Minn.; Allen Schneider of Creston, and Carey Schneider of Fairmont, Minn.; and one sister, Joleen Robertson, Algona.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Nina Christina Pearson

CEDAR FALLS — Nina Christina Pearson, 87, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Manly, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at her home in Cedar Falls.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church. The family of Nina Christina Pearson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Black Hawk/Grundy Hospice in her memory.

Nina Christina Pearson was born on May 4, 1910, in Britt, the ninth of 10 children of Edward and Marie (Olson) Peterson. She attended and received her education in the rural county schools near Britt and also attended Britt High School. She was united in marriage to Carl H. Pearson on July 16, 1932, in the Upper Flat Church in Britt. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1993. After their marriage together, they farmed near Manly for 25 years, before moving to Winter Park, Fla., returning to Iowa in 1981, making their home in Cedar Falls. Nina played the piano and organ in several churches while a member of the Evangelical Free Denomination. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting and quilting gifts for her family, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Lois Mae Blakesley and her husband, William, of Waterloo; Janice Marie Delp and her husband, Richard, of Manly; nine grandchildren, Marsha Moorman of Boone; Bruce Blakesley of Cedar Falls; Claudia Campbell of Cedar Falls; Eric Blakesley of Grundy Center; Roger Blakesley of Cedar Falls;Barry Delp of Davenport; Nancy Peterman of Lytton; Dennis Delp of Greene, and Rachel Zenz of Wall Lake; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Brown of Florida; one brother, Emanuel Peterson of Britt; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband Carl H. Pearson, who died on June 12, 1993, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Marie Peterson; five brothers, Bernhard, Victor, Lewis, Walter and George; and two sisters, Anna and Gerda.

Dorothy Marie Swaim was born Oct. 13, 1908, at Garner, the daughter of John Wesley and Theresa (Blaschke) Peterson. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Abram Swaim at Albert Lea, Minn. Dorothy was employed as a cook at Ogelsby's Food Shop and the IOOF Home for over 15 years. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are four children, Carl Swaim and his wife, Verlynn, of Waterloo; Harlan Swaim and his wife, Marian, of Waterloo; Karen DeMaris and her husband, Marvin, of Mason City, and Diane Ott of Manly; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother, Verner Peterson and his wife, Gertrude, of Mason City; and one sister-in-law, Lillian Peterson of Palo Alto, Calif.

She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Abram; one son, Ronald; three brothers, Ben, Art and Louis; and one sister, Vivian Miles.

Joseph Benesh

GARNER — Joseph Benesh, 86, of Garner, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 1997) at his home northwest of Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. James Mattson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Joseph James Benesh, the son of James "Jim" and Mary (Vavrina) Benesh was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Chicago, Ill. He was baptized into the Christian faith. When he was 2 years old, the family moved from Chicago to the Hayfield area. After attending the rural schools and graduating from high school at Hayfield, he farmed with his parents. In July of 1929, he graduated from the National Radio Institute of Washington, D.C., with a radio technician's certificate. He served his country in the U.S. Army, being stationed at Camp Claiborne, in Los Angeles. After the service, he returned to Hayfield and continued farming.

On July 5, 1969, he married Frances L. Harms at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. They made their home on the family farm where they continued to farm through 1996. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. He believed that "a man should stand tall and feel pride in the life he lived."

He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Benesh of Garner; a sister, Mary A. Peterson of Forest City; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James "Jim" Benesh, July 26, 1993; and a brother-in-law, Raymond A. Peterson.

John A. Erickson

John A. Erickson was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Swea City, the son of John Arthur and Effie (Anderson) Erickson. John attended school and graduated from Swea City High School in 1950. He attended Iowa State University graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in December of 1955. John was a member of the ATO Fraternity.

John married Marguerite Enbusk on Sept. 25, 1952. He served two years in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1958, he moved to Mason City and worked for Wallace Holland Kastler Schmitz and Com- pany. He accepted the position of Assistant City Engineer for the city of Mason City in 1972 and became City Engineer in 1974. He continued in this position until 1990 at which time he became Director of Public Works. In 1991, John became full-time director of the Landfill of North Iowa; a position he had held part time since 1974. John retired in December of 1995.

On Jan. 1, 1982, John was united in marriage to Charlotte Andrew in Belmond. John had been an active member of the Iowa Engineering Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Works Association, Iowa Solid Waste Operators, American Waterworks Association, Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he loved singing in the choir. He had also been a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 20 years. His happiest times were spending time with his family, traveling, or in his boat on Lake Winnebigosh.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte, of Mason City; three children, Julie Berry and her husband, Don, of Mason City; Douglas Erickson and his wife, Mary, of Bristol, Tenn.; and Mary Davenport and her husband, Rustin, of Mason City; two stepchildren, Dennis Andrew and Kimberley Andrew, of Edina, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Papouchis, Brooke and Tommy Berry, Steven and Nathan Erickson and Kathleen and Rex Davenport; one sister, Jean Lium and her husband, Arden, of Bricelyn, Minn.; one niece, Susan Helegeland of Leland; and one nephew, Gary Lium of Bricelyn, Minn.

Westley James Mariner

Westley James Mariner was born Sept. 7, 1940, the son of Wilson J and Yolanda (Calicchia) Mariner, in Mason City. Westley started working when he was 15 for Watertower Paint and Repair out of Clear Lake. He was employed there for 35 years.

On April 25, 1959, Westley was united in marriage in Mason City to Beverly Poole, whom he loved very much. Wes was very proud of his children and their accomplishments, he enjoyed watching them compete in the different sporting activities over the years.

He loved working on watertowers and when he wasn't working, he spent some of his time hunting pheasants, playing cards, especially 31, going to Las Vegas, planting and growing his vegetables and playing with his dog, "Sparky." The rest of his time was occupied by going to his trailer at Madison Lake, Minn., where he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Wes was always up for a good joke and an ice cold beer.

Westley is survived by his wife, Bev, of Mason City; mother, Yolanda Mariner of Mason City; two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Todd (Dawn) Liekweg of Rockwell, and Mr. and Mrs. Dan (Michelle) Wyborny of Mason City; three sons, Mr. And Mrs. Jon (Sheryl) Mariner of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. David (Kim) Mariner of Mason City, and Mr. and Mrs. Rod (Jodi) Mariner of Mason City; two sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Virginia) Blakesly, Mason City, and Mr. and Mrs. Stu (Lenna) Wilder, Clear Lake; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Pete (Jen) Mariner of Mason City, and Mr. Gary Mariner, of Trenton, Mo.; one half sister, Darlene Heller of Minnesota; two half brothers, Jay Mariner of Minnesota, and Harold Mariner of California; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Leonard D. Askildson, was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Thea (Langfald) Askildson. He was baptized and confirmed at Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills and attended Lake Mills schools.

He is survived by his special friend of 20 years, Darlene Hauge, of Emmons; his special little friend, Kendra; three sisters, Anna Flo, of Lake Mills, Iowa; Thelma Isaacson, of Albert Lea, and Bev Frost,of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Harold Askildson, of Albert Lea, and Marven Askildson, of Rochester; along with many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roger, Alvin and Art; and one sister, Agnes Felland. Leonard will always be remembered as a very loving and caring person who would do anything for anyone. He will truly be missed.

Muriel Jean Christians was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Rockwell, Iowa, to John and Alvina (Koppen) Wagner. Muriel graduated from Gates Business College at Waterloo, Iowa, in 1947. She was employed at Central Show Printing Company in Mason City, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Wynton Christians on July 16, 1950, at the Methodist Church, Rockford, Iowa. The family farmed in Iowa for several years before moving to Minnesota.

She was employed as a nursing assistant at Fairview Nursing Home, Dodge Center, for 16 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Dodge Center. Muriel enjoyed being a housewife, being with her family and helping at the church, raising a garden, flowers and traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Wynton Christians, Hayfield; three sons, Gary and Martha Christians, of Lehigh, Iowa; Paul and Kimberly Christians, Rochester, and Michael and Signe Christians, Kasson; one sister, Mrs. Arnold (Yvonne) Litterer, Marble Rock, Iowa; and one brother, Darwin Wagner, Nora Springs, Iowa; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Lynn; infant stillborn daughter, Linda; and one grandson.

Zella P. Eldridge was born March 25, 1900, in rural Plymouth, the daughter of Ivan and Rose (Helm) Wyborny. Zella was a graduate of Plymouth High School.

She married Russell D. Eldridge on Jan. 20, 1920, in Mason City.

Zella taught rural country school for two years, was a Sunday School superintendent for many different churches through the years, taught and played piano and was a member of the American Sunday School Union for 20 years in the Old Sugar Beet School House.

Zella enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Eugene Eldridge and his wife, Cleo, of Mason City; Russell Eldridge and his wife, Doris, of Perry, and Reeve Eldridge and his wife, Maxine, of rural Clear Lake; one sister, Callie Bishop of Tigard, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

NORA SPRINGS — Eva Sheckler, 86, of Winterset, formerly of Nora Springs, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 1997) at the Communiuty Care Center, Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with Pastor Deborah Stowers and Pastor Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Eva Sheckler was born July 9, 1911, in Stacyville, to Peter and Amanda (Arends) Adams.

She was united in marriage to Howard Sheckler on Jan. 19, 1936, in Nora Springs. Howard died July 6, 1970.

She spent seven years in Winterset; having spent the majority of her life in Nora Springs, growing up in Stacyville and Osage.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjean Parker and her husband, Loren, of Winterset; two grandsons, Jim Parker of Lakeville, Minn., and Jerry Parker of Eagan, Minn.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Amanda Adams; her husband, Howard; six brothers; and two sisters.

Palmer Homervold was born April 24, 1925, on a farm near Eagle Grove.

Myrtle L. Cooper

MANLY — Myrtle L. Cooper, 78, of 118 N. Broadway, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 N. Spring St., with the Rev. David Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. According to her wishes, Myrtle's body was cremated.

Myrtle Louise Cooper was born July 19, 1919, at rural Grafton, the daughter of Ferdinand and Emma (Hinsman) Koehler.

On March 25, 1940, she married Jesse T. Cooper at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton.

Myrtle loved fishing and gardening. She especially loved her dog, Tippy.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly.

Those left to cherish her memory are two nieces, Betty Lange, Garner, and Lois Deike and her husband, Leroy, Mason City; three great-nieces, Teresa Deike, Mason City; LeAnn Dodd, Lake Mills, and Ranae Aukes, Forest City; and one great-nephew, Bert Lange, Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse, on Sept. 22, 1968; one brother, Melvin Koehler; and one sister, Gladys Koehler.

LAKOTA — Ernest A. Heidecker, 86, of Lakota, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at home.

OSAGE — Alice Sponheim, 100, of Osage, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 1997) at the Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage, with the Rev. Roger Hoppenworth officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.

Alice Sponheim was born Dec. 8, 1896, on the family farm in West Cedar Township, Mitchell County.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Melson, New Orleans, La.; one son, Norman Sponheim, Nora Springs; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine brothers and sisters.

CHARLES CITY — Edith Oldham, 96, a former resident of 75 Cedar Terrace S., died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. by the Rosary Society and the 3rd Order of Carmelites and the parish Vigil Scripture Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

C. Edith Murray Oldham was born Oct. 2, 1901, at Dougherty, the daughter of James and Ellen C. Gossman Murray. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 1920, and on Sept. 15, 1924, she and Francis L. Oldham were married at Charles City.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, the 3rd Order of Carmelites, the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, was a Gold Star Mothe and a Navy Mother and was a member of the Senior Citizens and the American Association of Catholic Women. She loved her family and friends. Her church played an important role in her life.

Living family members include five sons and their wives, Mike and Darlene of Dubuque, Jack and Barb of Mason City, Alan and Marion of Billings, Mont., Donald "Rick" and Peggy of Cedar Rapids and Paul and Janet of Algona; a daughter-in-law, Edie Oldham-Schon of Dubuque; and three daughters, Sister Francesca of Decorah, Kathy and her husband, Larry Phearman, of Mason City, and Imelda and her husband, Charles Housh, of Monee, Ill. There are 36 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, in 1972; two sons, James and Joe; a daughter, Sister Mary Ellen; a brother; and two sisters.

MASON CITY — Robert D. Werstein, 48, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) at his home in Las Vegas, Nev. Services were held Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997 ) in Las Vegas. Interment was at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev. A local memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Covenant Church, Highway 18 East. The Rev. Rich Murray will officiate.

Robert was born July 14, 1949, in Mason City, the son of Sebastian and Elizabeth Werstein. He attended Mason City schools and graduated in 1967.

Rob served with the 31st Infantry in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, where he received several medals, including an Army Commendation Medal and three bronze stars. Following his discharge, he returned to Mason City where he worked for several years at Northwestern States Portland Cement Company.In 1985, Rob moved to Las Vegas where he joined the Southern Nevada Operating Engineers. He completed the apprenticeship program in 1989, and was named outstanding apprentice in 1990.

Rob is survived by his wife, Kathy Werstein of Las Vegas; two daughters, Laura Werstein of Lamoni and Tina Werstein of Mason City; one son, Jeff Werstein of Mason City; one sister, Betty Reich of Mason City; three brothers, Francis and Jack Werstein of Mason City and Charles Beer of Albert Lea, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Rob was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerry; and one nephew, Chad.>Rob's wife, family, friends and co-workers are deeply saddened by their loss.

Norma Marie Bolk

SHEFFIELD — Mrs. Walter (Norma Marie) Bolk, 86, of 119 N. Sixth St., died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Norma Marie Oelkers was born Jan. 26, 1912, the eldest daughter of J. William and Augusta (Johansen) Oelkers. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the former Zion Lutheran Church in Sheffield. She graduated from Sheffield High School with the Class of 1930. On Aug. 23, 1930, she was united in marriage to Walter C. Bolk, also of Sheffield. Almost their entire married life was spent in the Sheffield area, first on a farm, then in town. Walter served in the Navy during World War II and for a short time Norma resided in California to be near him. She was employed for many years for the Strouse Hatchery, the Cedar Valley Produce Company and Sheffield Produce Company, before retiring.

In 1948, they built their present home at 119 N. Sixth St. where she and Walter enjoyed their flowers and garden. They also loved to travel and fish and they spent many hours enjoying their hobby.

Norma was a member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing quilt pieces during "Do Days" with other ladies of the church. She also loved to crochet and do counted cross stitch, sharing her talent in the gifts she gave over the years to her family of nieces and nephews, with whom she enjoyed their visits.

She and Walter were privileged to have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of 1980.

After the death of Walter, Norma continued to enjoy her home until failing health necessitated her move to the Sheffield Care Center in February of 1996.

She is survived by one sister, Margaret Younge and her husband, Luther, of Sheffield; 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her parents; two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Beyer and Mrs. E.A. (Minnie) Combs; two brothers, Henry A. and William (in infancy); and one nephew, Dennis Beyer.

He was a member of the San Juan-Marne Post 733 V.F.W., Mason City. Pat was a voracious reader and also enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He loved dancing and listening to country music, watching professional wrestling and was an avid stamp collector and dealer. Auctions were also a pastime when he wasn't spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Pat is survived by seven children, Patty Tickal of Clear Lake, Deanna Tickal of Idaho, Lisa Harrison of Texas, Mike and his wife, Carmen Tickal, and Brandon Tickal, all of Mason City, Trace Tickal of Des Moines and Rory Tickal and his wife, Denise, of New Jersey; one sister, Kathryn, and her husband, Dean Suby, of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Jeff Tickal and Dick and his wife, Joann Tickal, all of Mason City; and numerous grandchildren.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Hubacher and Rosie Spinka.

Duane T. Bauman

ALLISON — Funeral services for Duane T. Bauman, 59, of 17837 Highway 14, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and will continue Tuesday at the church beginning one hour before services.

Duane Thomas Bauman was born Dec. 16, 1937, in Waverly, a son of Thomas Theodore and Laura Louise (Wubbena) Bauman, and died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of complications from cancer.

He received his education in the Jackson Township schools and graduated from Allison High School in 1956. He attended Iowa State University for a short time. Following the death of his father, he started farming at an early age.

On Feb. 6, 1958, he was united in marriage to Georgette Kay Freeseman at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. Duane and Georgette had made their home on the family farm since their marriage and became the parents of five children.

Duane had been engaged in farming his entire life and also sold Northrup King Seed for several years in the Allison area. Since 1972, he had been engaged in the real estate and farm management business. He was a member of the Butler Bremer Chickasaw Board of Realtors and the Butler County Inheritance Tax Appraisal Board. He was an active member and former leader in 4-H for many years.

He was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Allison where he had served on the church council, and was a former Sunday school superintendent for many years.

Duane will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and one who enjoyed farming as being close to God and nature. His pastimes included collecting antiques and refinishing furniture.

Living family members include his loving wife, Georgette, of Allison; three daughters and their husbands, Gwenda Bauman of Lakewood, Colo., and Denise and Lon Friesth and Donita and Owen Greenough, all of Urbandale; two sons and their spouses, Leon and Linda Bauman of Olathe, Kan., and Jason and Kelly Bauman of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Tana, Michael, Lisa, Adam and Eric Friesth, Trevor Bauman, Austin Greenough and Taylor Bauman; and one brother, Dale, and his wife, Rita Bauman, of Ames. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in infancy and one nephew, Kyle Bauman.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural prayer service beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:30 p.m.

John J. Bombella was born Nov. 26, 1926, in Des Moines, son of Joseph and Rose (Ramierz) Bombella. He married Phyllis E. Badker in December of 1947.

John attended Mason City schools and then worked on the railroad until he served in the Navy during World War II. He then worked at Mason City Brick and Tile and at International Minerals for over 40 years and at United Contractors doing bridge construction until retiring.

John enjoyed carpentry, fishing and walking. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Bombella, Mason City; three children, John Bombella, Evansdale; Sharon Rubio and her husband, Joe, Mason City, and Linda Bombella, Mason City; one grandson, Matt Bombella, Evansdale; two sisters, Juanita Miller and her husband, Jay, Mason City, and Esther Acosta and her husband, David, of Mason City; two brothers, Phillip Bombella and his wife, Gladys, Mason City, and Ben Bombella and his wife, Judy, Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

BANCROFT — Juanita Clark, 85, of Bancroft, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at the Heritage Nursing Home.

Matthew Jay Hamlin

SIOUX CITY — Matthew Jay Hamlin, infant son of Brenda Sue Hamlin of Sioux City, formerly of Mason City, was carried tenderly on the wings of angels into the open arms of Jesus on Oct. 1, 1997.

Matthew was born on Sept. 30, 1997, in Sioux City. He blessed his mother's life with his presence, and even though Jesus called him home in just 30 short hours, he will always and forever be his mother's "Gift from God," as his name states.

A graveside service was held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at Whiting.

Pearson Wood Funeral Home, Onawa, was in charge of arrangements.

He will be cherished in the hearts of his survivors, his mother, Brenda Sue Hamlin; grandparents, Don and Sally Hamlin; two aunts, Bev and her husband, Jim McCoy; Patsy and her husband, Bill Berneman; one uncle, Chris and his wife, Heather Hamlin, all of Mason City; great-grandmother, Leona Bergstrom, Independence; cousins, Miranda Neuroth, Chris McCoy, Karen Berneman and Nick Hamlin, all of Mason City, and Mike McCoy, of Rockford; along with other cousins, Dustin, Crisann, Duncan, Dallas and Abigail, all of Mason City, and Casey and Cody of Rockford.

MASON CITY — Laura Ann Papouchis, 2year-old daughter of Bill and Ann Papouchis, of 15589 317th St., died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with Father Robert Towner officiating. Following the service, Laura's body will be cremated at the Memorial Park Crematory.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Laura was born May 9, 1995, at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, the daughter of Bill and Ann (Ames) Papouchis.

Laura was very stubborn, but happy which was indicated in her smile no matter what she had been through. She enjoyed playing with her best friend and sister, Alexis, in the sand. Watching and trying to catch bubbles that were blown around her, eating popcorn, and Chee-tos and playing with her favorite white bear consumed her precious time. One would often hear her say, "Uuhh, Baby" when playing. She also loved to watch the "Vegetable Tales" video with all the bright colors. Laura made many friends while being treated at the University of Iowa and the University of Nebraska Hospitals.

Laura is survived by her parents, Bill and Ann Papouchis; two sisters, Melissa and Alexis, all of Mason City; maternal grandparents, Skip and Bonnie Ames of Ventura; maternal great-grandmother, Evelyn Plantz; maternal aunt and uncle Janel Ames and Dan Ames; paternal aunts and uncles, Jim and Cindy Papouchis, John and Chris Papouchis, George and Linda Papouchis, Katherine Castelline and Eugene and Helen Durant.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Clarence Plantz; paternal grandparents, Tony and Flora Papouchis, and maternal great-grandparents, Harold and Ruth Ames.

Eugene C. Schneider was born Jan. 14, 1946, in Swea City.

Nina Christina Pearson

CEDAR FALLS — Nina Christina Pearson, 87, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Manly, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 1997) at her home in Cedar Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church. The family of Nina Christina Pearson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Black Hawk/Grundy Hospice in her memory.

Nina Christina Pearson was born on May 4, 1910, in Britt, the ninth of 10 children of Edward and Marie (Olson) Peterson. She attended and received her education in the rural county schools near Britt and also attended Britt High School. She was united in marriage to Carl H. Pearson on July 16, 1932, in the Upper Flat Church in Britt. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1993. After their marriage together, they farmed near Manly for 25 years, before moving to Winter Park, Fla., returning to Iowa in 1981, making their home in Cedar Falls. Nina played the piano and organ in several churches while a member of the Evangelical Free Denomination. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting and quilting gifts for her family, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Lois Mae Blakesley and her husband, William, of Waterloo; Janice Marie Delp and her husband, Richard, of Manly; nine grandchildren, Marsha Moorman of Boone; Bruce Blakesley of Cedar Falls; Claudia Campbell of Cedar Falls; Eric Blakesley of Grundy Center; Roger Blakesley of Cedar Falls;Barry Delp of Davenport; Nancy Peterman of Lytton; Dennis Delp of Greene, and Rachel Zenz of Wall Lake; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Brown of Florida; one brother, Emanuel Peterson of Britt; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband Carl H. Pearson, who died on June 12, 1993, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Marie Peterson; five brothers, Bernhard, Victor, Lewis, Walter and George; and two sisters, Anna and Gerda.

Dorothy Marie Swaim was born Oct. 13, 1908, at Garner, the daughter of John Wesley and Theresa (Blaschke) Peterson. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Abram Swaim at Albert Lea, Minn. Dorothy was employed as a cook at Ogelsby's Food Shop and the IOOF Home for over 15 years. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are four children, Carl Swaim and his wife, Verlynn, of Waterloo; Harlan Swaim and his wife, Marian, of Waterloo; Karen DeMaris and her husband, Marvin, of Mason City, and Diane Ott of Manly; 22 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother, Verner Peterson and his wife, Gertrude, of Mason City; and one sister-in-law, Lillian Peterson of Palo Alto, Calif.

She was preceded in death by both parents; her husband, Abram; one son, Ronald; three brothers, Ben, Art and Louis; and one sister, Vivian Miles.

Joseph Benesh

GARNER — Joseph Benesh, 86, of Garner, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 1997) at his home northwest of Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. James Mattson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Garner.

Joseph James Benesh, the son of James "Jim" and Mary (Vavrina) Benesh was born Jan. 18, 1911, in Chicago, Ill. He was baptized into the Christian faith. When he was 2 years old, the family moved from Chicago to the Hayfield area. After attending the rural schools and graduating from high school at Hayfield, he farmed with his parents. In July of 1929, he graduated from the National Radio Institute of Washington, D.C., with a radio technician's certificate. He served his country in the U.S. Army, being stationed at Camp Claiborne, in Los Angeles. After the service, he returned to Hayfield and continued farming.

On July 5, 1969, he married Frances L. Harms at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. They made their home on the family farm where they continued to farm through 1996. He was a member of the Farm Bureau. He believed that "a man should stand tall and feel pride in the life he lived."

He is survived by his wife, Frances L. Benesh of Garner; a sister, Mary A. Peterson of Forest City; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James "Jim" Benesh, July 26, 1993; and a brother-in-law, Raymond A. Peterson.

John A. Erickson

MASON CITY — John A. Erickson, 64, of 1005 Brentwood Drive, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

John A. Erickson was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Swea City, the son of John Arthur and Effie (Anderson) Erickson. John attended school and graduated from Swea City High School in 1950. He attended Iowa State University graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in December of 1955. John was a member of the ATO Fraternity.

John married Marguerite Enbusk on Sept. 25, 1952. He served two years in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1958, he moved to Mason City and worked for Wallace Holland Kastler Schmitz and Com- pany. He accepted the position of Assistant City Engineer for the city of Mason City in 1972 and became City Engineer in 1974. He continued in this position until 1990 at which time he became Director of Public Works. In 1991, John became full-time director of the Landfill of North Iowa; a position he had held part time since 1974. John retired in December of 1995.

On Jan. 1, 1982, John was united in marriage to Charlotte Andrew in Belmond. John had been an active member of the Iowa Engineering Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Works Association, Iowa Solid Waste Operators, American Waterworks Association, Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he loved singing in the choir. He had also been a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 20 years. His happiest times were spending time with his family, traveling, or in his boat on Lake Winnebigosh.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte, of Mason City; three children, Julie Berry and her husband, Don, of Mason City; Douglas Erickson and his wife, Mary, of Bristol, Tenn.; and Mary Davenport and her husband, Rustin, of Mason City; two stepchildren, Dennis Andrew and Kimberley Andrew, of Edina, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Papouchis, Brooke and Tommy Berry, Steven and Nathan Erickson and Kathleen and Rex Davenport; one sister, Jean Lium and her husband, Arden, of Bricelyn, Minn.; one niece, Susan Helegeland of Leland; and one nephew, Gary Lium of Bricelyn, Minn.

Westley James Mariner

Westley James Mariner was born Sept. 7, 1940, the son of Wilson J and Yolanda (Calicchia) Mariner, in Mason City. Westley started working when he was 15 for Watertower Paint and Repair out of Clear Lake. He was employed there for 35 years.

On April 25, 1959, Westley was united in marriage in Mason City to Beverly Poole, whom he loved very much. Wes was very proud of his children and their accomplishments, he enjoyed watching them compete in the different sporting activities over the years.

He loved working on watertowers and when he wasn't working, he spent some of his time hunting pheasants, playing cards, especially 31, going to Las Vegas, planting and growing his vegetables and playing with his dog, "Sparky." The rest of his time was occupied by going to his trailer at Madison Lake, Minn., where he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Wes was always up for a good joke and an ice cold beer.

Westley is survived by his wife, Bev, of Mason City; mother, Yolanda Mariner of Mason City; two daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Todd (Dawn) Liekweg of Rockwell, and Mr. and Mrs. Dan (Michelle) Wyborny of Mason City; three sons, Mr. And Mrs. Jon (Sheryl) Mariner of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. David (Kim) Mariner of Mason City, and Mr. and Mrs. Rod (Jodi) Mariner of Mason City; two sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Virginia) Blakesly, Mason City, and Mr. and Mrs. Stu (Lenna) Wilder, Clear Lake; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Pete (Jen) Mariner of Mason City, and Mr. Gary Mariner, of Trenton, Mo.; one half sister, Darlene Heller of Minnesota; two half brothers, Jay Mariner of Minnesota, and Harold Mariner of California; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Leonard D. Askildson, was born Oct. 19, 1936, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Thea (Langfald) Askildson. He was baptized and confirmed at Center Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills and attended Lake Mills schools.

He is survived by his special friend of 20 years, Darlene Hauge, of Emmons; his special little friend, Kendra; three sisters, Anna Flo, of Lake Mills, Iowa; Thelma Isaacson, of Albert Lea, and Bev Frost,of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Harold Askildson, of Albert Lea, and Marven Askildson, of Rochester; along with many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roger, Alvin and Art; and one sister, Agnes Felland. Leonard will always be remembered as a very loving and caring person who would do anything for anyone. He will truly be missed.

Muriel Jean Christians was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Rockwell, Iowa, to John and Alvina (Koppen) Wagner. Muriel graduated from Gates Business College at Waterloo, Iowa, in 1947. She was employed at Central Show Printing Company in Mason City, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Wynton Christians on July 16, 1950, at the Methodist Church, Rockford, Iowa. The family farmed in Iowa for several years before moving to Minnesota.

She was employed as a nursing assistant at Fairview Nursing Home, Dodge Center, for 16 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Dodge Center. Muriel enjoyed being a housewife, being with her family and helping at the church, raising a garden, flowers and traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Wynton Christians, Hayfield; three sons, Gary and Martha Christians, of Lehigh, Iowa; Paul and Kimberly Christians, Rochester, and Michael and Signe Christians, Kasson; one sister, Mrs. Arnold (Yvonne) Litterer, Marble Rock, Iowa; and one brother, Darwin Wagner, Nora Springs, Iowa; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Lynn; infant stillborn daughter, Linda; and one grandson.

Zella taught rural country school for two years, was a Sunday School superintendent for many different churches through the years, taught and played piano and was a member of the American Sunday School Union for 20 years in the Old Sugar Beet School House.

Zella enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Eugene Eldridge and his wife, Cleo, of Mason City; Russell Eldridge and his wife, Doris, of Perry, and Reeve Eldridge and his wife, Maxine, of rural Clear Lake; one sister, Callie Bishop of Tigard, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

John married Marguerite Enbusk on Sept. 25, 1952. He served two years in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Hood, Texas.

In 1958, he moved to Mason City and worked for Wallace Holland Kastler Schmitz and Company. He accepted the position of Assistant City Engineer for the city of Mason City in 1972 and became City Engineer in 1974. He continued in this position until 1990 at which time he became director of public works. In 1991, John became full-time director of the Landfill of North Iowa; a position he had held part time since 1974. John retired in December of 1995.

On Jan. 1, 1982, John was united in marriage to Charlotte Andrew in Belmond.

John had been an active member of the Iowa Engineering Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Works Association, Iowa Solid Waste Operators, American Waterworks Association, Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he loved singing in the choir. He had also been a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 20 years.

His happiest times were spending time with his family, traveling, or in his boat on Lake Winnebigosh.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte, of Mason City; three children, Julie Berry and her husband, Don, of Mason City; Douglas Erickson and his wife, Mary, of Bristol, Tenn.; and Mary Davenport and her husband, Rustin, of Mason City; two stepchildren, Dennis Andrew and Kimberley Andrew of Edina, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Papouchis, Brooke and Tommy Berry, Steven and Nathan Erickson, and Kathleen and Rex Davenport; one sister, Jean Lium and her husband, Arden, of Bricelyn, Minn.; one niece, Susan Helgeland, of Leland; and one nephew, Gary Lium, of Bricelyn, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Perry Gene.

 

Eva Sheckler

NORA SPRINGS — Eva Sheckler, 86, of Winterset, formerly of Nora Springs, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 1997) at the Communiuty Care Center, Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with Pastor Deborah Stowers and Pastor Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Collins Funeral Home, 505 East Court, Winterset.

There will be further visitation from 1:30 p.m. until time of services today at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, in her memory.

Eva Sheckler was born July 9, 1911, in Stacyville, to Peter and Amanda (Arends) Adams.

She was united in marriage to Howard Sheckler on Jan. 19, 1936, in Nora Springs. Howard died July 6, 1970.

She spent seven years in Winterset; having spent the majority of her life in Nora Springs, growing up in Stacyville and Osage.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs.

She is survived by her daughter, Marjean Parker and her husband, Loren, of Winterset; two grandsons, Jim Parker of Lakeville, Minn., and Jerry Parker of Eagan, Minn.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Amanda Adams; her husband, Howard; six brothers; and two sisters.

 

Palmer Homervold

CLARION — Palmer Homervold, 72, of Clarion, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church, Clarion. Burial will be at 2 p.m. today at the Mamrelund Cemetery, Randall.

Willim Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Palmer Homervold was born April 24, 1925, on a farm near Eagle Grove.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; children, Luann Warren of Clarion; Carol Sheely, Des Moines; and Randy Homervold of Des Moines; six grandchildren; one brother, Arthur Homervold of Clarion; and one sister, Esther Wood of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

 

Myrtle L. Cooper

MANLY — Myrtle L. Cooper, 78, of 118 N. Broadway, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 N. Spring St., with the Rev. David Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Kensett Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. According to her wishes, Myrtle's body was cremated.

Myrtle Louise Cooper was born July 19, 1919, at rural Grafton, the daughter of Ferdinand and Emma (Hinsman) Koehler.

On March 25, 1940, she married Jesse T. Cooper at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton.

Myrtle loved fishing and gardening. She especially loved her dog, Tippy.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly.

Those left to cherish her memory are two nieces, Betty Lange, Garner, and Lois Deike and her husband, Leroy, Mason City; three great-nieces, Teresa Deike, Mason City; LeAnn Dodd, Lake Mills, and Ranae Aukes, Forest City; and one great-nephew, Bert Lange, Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jesse, on Sept. 22, 1968; one brother, Melvin Koehler; and one sister, Gladys Koehler.

 

Ernest A. Heidecker

LAKOTA — Ernest A. Heidecker, 86, of Lakota, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elmore, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Winter Funeral Home, Buffalo Center, where other arrangements are incomplete.

 

Kristina Kay Crawford-Keltner

DOWS — Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, for Kristina Kay Keltner, stillborn daughter of Bruce Keltner and Misty Crawford. The Rev. Daird W. Korth will officiate. Burial will be in the Garden of Angels at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Survivors include her parents, Bruce Keltner and Misty Crawford of Dows; a brother, Jonathon Keltner, Dows; maternal grandparents, John and Linda Crawford, Plymouth; paternal grandmother, Helen Keltner, Buffalo; maternal great-grandparents, Bill and Shirley Baker, Mason City; Harold Felio, Tomah, Wis., and Henrietta Wolf, Lakewood, Calif.; and paternal great-grandparents, Roy and Lucille Ridenour, Buffalo.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Dale Keltner; and maternal great-grandfathers, Ralf Wolf and John Crawford Sr.

 

Alice Sponheim

OSAGE — Alice Sponheim, 100, of Osage, died Wednesday (Oct. 8, 1997) at the Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage, with the Rev. Roger Hoppenworth officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.

Alice Sponheim was born Dec. 8, 1896, on the family farm in West Cedar Township, Mitchell County.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Melson, New Orleans, La.; one son, Norman Sponheim, Nora Springs; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine brothers and sisters.
