George J. Ewald

CHARLES CITY — George J. Ewald, 61, a resident of Philadelphia, Pa., and a former Charles City resident, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at his home.

Private family graveside funeral services and burial for George Ewald will be held at the Calvary Cemetery, Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., is in charge of local arrangements.

George Joseph Ewald was born Sept. 5, 1936, at Ionia, the son of Victor and Wilma Carr Ewald.

He was a 1956 graduate of Boys Town High School, Boys Town, Neb. George served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1960 during the Korean War and was a retired pressman at the United States Government Mint in Philadelphia .

Living family members include his mother, Wilma Ewald of Des Moines; two sisters and their husbands, Mary and Chuck Lang of Mason City, and Cheryl and Dean Young of Des Moines; two brothers, Brother Robert Ewald of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., and Paul and Judy Ewald of Charles City; four nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, one nephew, four uncles and three aunts.

 

Hillis E. Hudson

DUMONT — Hillis E. Hudson, 86, of Dumont, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at Friendship Village, Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dumont Reformed Church. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home.

Hillis Hudson was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Aredale.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Hudson, Friendship Village, Waterloo; one son, Gerald Hudson of Waterloo; two daughters, Maxine Kingery, Nashua, and Linda Brede, Shell Rock; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lowell Hudson, Dumont, and Vernon "Mike" Hudson, Sheffield; and three sisters, Alene Wilkie, Clear Lake; June Stewart, Bellevue, Wash., and Wilma Hill, Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.

 

 

Ernest A. Heidecker

LAKOTA — Ernest A. Heidecker, 86, of Lakota, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elmore, Minn., with the Rev. David Hinman officiating. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Stevens.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ernest A. Heidecker was born Sept. 11, 1911, at Lakota.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline, Lakota; one son, Marvin Heidecker of Lakota; two daughters, Erna Lunn of Swea City, and Myra Domes, Fergus Falls, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Conrad, Jasper, Minn., and Irene Horak, Luck, Wis.; and two brothers, Bill Griese, Lakota and Arnold Griese, Fairbanks, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Forest City.

 

John L. Scheppler

CLARION — John L. Scheppler, 71, of Clarion, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at the Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, with the Rev. Curt Miner officiating. Burial will be in Galt Cemetery, Galt, with military honors by the Clarion American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Willim Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund in care of the family.

John Lester Scheppler was born Feb. 2, 1926, on a farm near Woolstock.

Survivors include four children, John A. Scheppler of Ames; Brian D. Scheppler of Denver, Colo.; Diane Hayes, Ft. Belvoir, Va., and Deborah R. Ott, Indianapolis, Ind.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Delbert of Gladbrook; Bernard of Clarion, and Wilmer of Kimberling City, Mo.; and four sisters, Mildred Porter of Des Moines; Dorothy McCloskey, Seattle, Wash.; Marjorie Tudor of Charles City, and Beverly Johnson of Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one granddaughter.

 

Bruce A. Wilson

MASON CITY — Bruce A. Wilson, 53, of 930 14th Place N.E., died Thursday (Oct. 9, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating.

There will be no visitation. According to Bruce's wishes, his body will be cremated. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be given to Bruce's favorite organizations, the Mason City Renew Center and Lime Creek Nature Center.

Bruce Allen Wilson was born on Sept. 10, 1944, the son of Charles M. And Blythe E. (Legg) Wilson, in St. Cloud, Minn.

Bruce spent his early years in Lake Okoboji, before moving to Mason City, in 1952. He attended Harding Elementary, Monroe Junior High and Mason City High School, where he played football for the Mohawks and graduated in 1962.

He attended North Iowa Area Community College, Mankato State College and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. While at the University of Iowa, he played football for the semi-pro team, the Cedar Rapids Rapid Raiders.

For the next 20 years, he worked for the Iowa Department of Human Services and the Arizona Department of Social Services as a child protective worker. He also lived in Alaska and Colorado during that time, before returning to Mason City in 1993.

Since his return to Mason City, he has been active in a 12-step program and the Renew Center. He has also been an active supporter of his son, Luke Wilson, who plays football for the University of Northern Iowa. Bruce had spent a great deal of time in Cedar Falls with his son. He had lived with his mother, Blythe, since his return.

Survivors include one son, Lucas Hert Wilson, Cedar Falls; his mother, Blythe E. Wilson, Mason City; one brother, Barry J. Wilson and his wife, Sandra K., of Mason City; two nephews, Zachary Wilson, Madison, Wis., and Gabriel Wilson, U.S. Navy, Hawaii; a close aunt, Allie Mae Threde, Lake Park; and several friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Monroe Wilson, in 1966.

 

Paul L. Knudson

MANLY — Paul L. Knudson, 72, of 109 W. North, died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, with the Rev. David Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, and will be one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials in his name.

Paul was born April 2, 1925, on the family farm, rural Manly, in Worth County, the son of Alfred and Orla (Edwards) Knudson. He was baptized and confirmed at an early age at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Paul graduated from Manly High School in 1944.

Paul helped on the family farm that summer and fall and then went to work at the Sugar Beet Plant in Mason City. In 1944, he started working for the Rock Island Railroad as a clerk and worked in the Manly area all but one year, which he spent in Waterloo.

In 1962, after his father's death, he also started farming the family farm while also working for the railroad. In 1973, he retired from the railroad due to ill health and went to work for North Central School and worked there until 1983. He had been on kidney dialysis since January of 1985 which was another way of his life.

Paul enjoyed his garden, fruit trees and all of his flowers. He was a member of the Clerk's Union and a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly.

Paul is survived by his brother, Richard Knudson and his wife, Lois, Mason City; sister-in-law, Rena Knudson, Manly; four nieces, Dee Ann Dunbar and her husband, Jim, Manly; Denece Knudson, Mason City; Laurie Coe and her husband, Jim, Mason City, and Connie Knudson, Mason City; two nephews, Marty Knudson and his wife, Kay, Mason City, and Randy Knudson and his wife, Pena, Iowa City; and one great-niece, Amber Lynn Coe, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Donna Leann Knudson; and two brothers, Roger and Sanford Knudson.

 

Roger L. McMillin

HOUSTON, Texas — Services for Roger L. McMillin, 50, of Houston, who died suddenly Sept. 10, 1997, in Houston, were held Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church, Gessner, Texas.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, Iowa.

For those desiring memorial contributions, they may be given to the Roger McMillin Memorial Fund, Compass Bank, 122649 Memorial Dr., Houston, Texas 77024, Attn: Sue Nelson.

Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt, Iowa, is in charge of local arrangements.

Roger Lynn McMillin, the son of Robert and Lucille McMillin ,was born April 17, 1947, at Spirit Lake, Iowa.

He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Terril, Iowa, and confirmed at St. Paul's Church, Emmetsburg, Iowa.

He graduated from Emmetsburg High School and attended Iowa State University on a football scholarship. He later received his MBA from Rice University, Houston, Texas.

In 1970, he moved to Houston and enthusiastically pursued the motto, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as quick as I could," as he warmly embraced life as a Texan.

He worked briefly for Phillips Petroleum and then devoted 25 years to international work with Pittsburgh-Corning, traveling the world, becoming proficient in several languages, finding many new friends and entertaining all with stories of his travels. He also founded and developed several successful companies in the petrochemical industry. Roger was a "gentleman extraordinaire" and will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends who enjoyed his zest for life.]

He is survived by his mother, Lucille McMillin of Grundy Center, Iowa; a sister, Jane Brownlee and her husband, Ron, of Houston, Texas; a brother, Charles McMillin, of Baltimore, Md.; adoring nieces and nephews, Richard, Julia, Jennifer and Charles Brownlee and Sean McMillin.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert McMillin.

 

Marie Dorthea Mohr

KENSETT — Marie Dorthea Mohr, 99, of rural Kensett, died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood.

Mr. Harry J. Hanson

MASON CITY — Mr. Harry J. Hanson, 85, of 17069 320th St., died at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Second St. N.E., with the Rev. Thomas F. McAndrew of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Manly officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth. Prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Monday. The family suggests memorials to the Harry J. Hanson Memorial Fund.

Harry was born June 6, 1912, on the family farm in rural Mason City, the son of Hans and Barbara (Fitzel) Hanson. Harry had lived and farmed on the family farm his entire life. He enjoyed his cats, gardening and challenging nieces and nephews to a game of checkers.

Harry is survived by his mother, Barbara Hanson of Northwood; one sister, Ethel Luckason of Northwood; one brother, Raymond Hanson of Northwood; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Ralph and Louis Hanson; and two sisters, Emma Hanson and Mary Bistline.

 

Katie M. Oberholtzer

CHARLES CITY — Katie M. Oberholtzer, 7, of 1540 Beaumont Ave., died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at a Rochester, Minn., hospital from injuries suffered in an automobile/horse and buggy accident near Colwell on Oct. 5.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am. Tuesday at the Cedar Valley Mennonite Church at 320th Street. Burial will be in the church cemetery. No flowers are requested.

Friends may call at the Oberholtzer home from 2 to 4 p.m. today and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Katie M. Oberholtzer was born Dec. 17, 1989, in Lancaster, Pa.

Survivors included her parents, John and Anna Mae Oberholtzer; two brothers, Joseph and Stephen, at home; two sisters, Louella and Ruth, at home; grandparents, Joseph and Martha Oberholtzer and John and Nora Martin of rural Charles City; and great grandparents, John Holt, David and Lena Martin, and Weaver Martin, all of New Holland, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her natural mother, Wilma.

Thomas Michael Carstens

KENSETT —Thomas Michael Carstens, 36, of 400 Fifth St., Kensett, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) in his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. SE, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a scripture service at 7 p.m.

Thomas was born May 10, 1961, the son of George and Judy (Ryan) Carstens in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1979. On Sept. 8, 1984, Thomas was united in marriage to Esther Wallace in Mason City. For the past 9½ years he has been working as a certified welder for Albert Lea Trailer Repair.

Thomas was a fanatic car enthusiast who loved fixing and working on them. He also enjoyed racing at the Cedar Falls Drag Strip. If a friend's car wasn't working he would try to fix it, no matter the weather conditions. Most of all he loved spending time with his three children.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Esther; one daughter, Sarha; two sons, Thomas Jr. and Jason, all at home in Kensett; his parents George and Judy Carstens of Mason City; one sister, Lisa and her husband, Paul, Faust of Mason City; two brothers George and his wife ,Tina Carstens Jr. of Mason City, and Joe and his wife, Cindy Carstens of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; maternal grandmother, Izetta Ryan of Manly; two nieces, Andrea Faust and Brittany Carstens; three nephews, Nathan Faust, Andrew and Christopher Carstens; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Carstens was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Ryan; paternal grandparents, Albert and Lydia Carstens; and one uncle, Richard Ryan. 

Margaret (Maggie) Woodley

SHEFFIELD —Margaret (Maggie) Woodley, 93, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Grarup Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edward Clevenger of the Westfork United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Westfork Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret was born Oct. 12, 1903, in Dougherty. She received her education from St. Patrick's Catholic School in Dougherty and the Westfork District One. On Aug. 13, 1920, she married Ray Woodley. They moved to the Dakotas to work on a threshing crew were she was a cook. From there they worked in an Indiana steel mill, then they returned to her family farm in Dougherty where she lived until Feb. 1, 1995, when she moved to the Sheffield Care Center.

Margaret was a member of the Cemetery Society, and a very active member of the Helping Hands Club. She loved her flowers and cooking.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. (Al) June Creese of Des Moines; two sons, Darrell and wife, Mildred, Woodley of Dougherty and Richard and wife, Nancy, Woodley of Dike; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, one brother, two sisters and a great-great grandchild

MASON CITY — Albert Herrera, 93, of 1616 N. Delaware, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services have been tentatively set for Wednesday morning. Other arrangements are incomplete at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Ave.

Margaret ‘Maggie’ Woodley

SHEFFIELD — Margaret "Maggie" Woodley, 93, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Grarup Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edward Clevenger of the Westfork United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Westfork Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Margaret was born Oct. 22, 1903, in Dougherty. She received her education from St. Patrick's Catholic school in Dougherty and Westfork District One. On Aug. 13, 1920, she married Ray Woodley. Beverly J. Boles

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Beverly J. Boles, 69, of Plymouth, passed away Saturday (Oct. 11, 1997) in Robbinsdale.

Beverly was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Brunswick United Methodist Church in Crystal.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapels, Inc. Robbinsdale Chapel, 39th and West Broadway, Robbinsdale, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials are preferred.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald L. Boles; daughter, Kay L. (Dan) Schultz, Minneapolis; sons, Bill R. (Shelly) Boles, St. Cloud; John C. Boles, Palmdale, Calif., and Jim P. Boles, Otsego; grandchildren; Holly and Adam Boles; one sister, Loretta Lichter,of Burt, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, W.D. and Gertrude (Gertie) Howie of Mason City, Iowa.

 

Paul Edwards Sr.

ESTHERVILLE — Paul Edwards Sr., 56, of Estherville, formerly of Mason City and Clear Lake areas, died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at the Estherville hospital.

A memorial luncheon will be held at a later date.

He is survived by two daughters, Sheri Fehr, Pedernales, Mexico, and Shirli Childers, Bettendorf; two sons, Paul Edwards Jr., Jackson, Minn., and Matt Edwards, St. Louis, Mo.; and seven grandchildren.

 

Marie Dorthea Mohr

KENSETT — Marie Dorthea Mohr, 99, of rural Kensett, died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. (Sam) Hernes and the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Kensett.

A celebration of her life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. So., Northwood. There will also be visitation one hour prior to time of services on Thursday at the church.

The family of Marie Dorthea Mohr has requested that memorial contributions be made in her memory.

Marie Dorthea Mohr was born on April 22, 1898, the daughter of Jurgen Heinrich and Margaretha (Thompsen) Seemann at the family home near Bouton.

She attended and received her education at the Peoples Township rural school near Bouton.

She was united in marriage to Carl W. Mohr on April 25, 1916, and lived in the area until the spring of 1918, when they moved to a farm west of Kensett. They farmed there until 1954, when they moved to Mason City. Carl preceded her in death on April 11, 1956.

Marie was employed at Lundberg's as an alterations seamstress from 1958 until 1963, when she retired, but continued to work as a seamstress from her home.

In 1986, she moved to Everett, Wash., to live with her daughter, Dorothy Johnson.

She returned to Iowa in 1987, and entered the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center until transferring to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood in 1988, residing there until her death.

Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Johnson and her husband, Dwayne, of Kensett; Fern Gordon of Everett, Wash., and Marilyn Gilman and her husband, Jerry, of Everett, Wash.; three sons, Wayne Mohr of North Hollywood, Calif.; Stanley "Bud" Mohr and his wife, Lila, of Everett, Wash., and Harold "Casey" Mohr and his wife, Nancy, of Northwood; 30 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; a sister, Anna Petersen; two brothers, John and Jerry Seemann; a daughter, Anita Nelson; a son-in-law, Cal Nelson; daughters-in-law, Kathleen and Bertha Mohr; and son-in-law, James "Butch" Gordon.

 

Albert E. 'Shorty' Herrera Sr.

MASON CITY — Albert E. "Shorty" Herrera Sr., 93, of 1616 N. Delaware Ave., died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A celebration of the life of Albert Herrera Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Private family interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home. The casket will be closed.

Memorials may be given to the Albert E. "Shorty" Herrera Sr. Memorial Fund.

Albert E. "Shorty" Herrera Sr. was born May 22, 1904, to Eriberto and Seprianna (Morena) Herrera in Jacona, Michoacan, Mexico.

Albert immigrated to the United States alone as a young boy of 14. He first lived and worked in Montana and Colorado, before setting in Gary, Ind.

He met and then married Frances Flores on Feb. 28, 1927. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year.

They arrived in Mason City in 1928 and he took employment at Deckers and later with Lehigh Portland Cement Company.

Albert loved to travel, enjoyed meeting people, gardening and spending time with his family.

He supported various charities throughout his life. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Herrera, Mason City; four sons, Jesse Herrera and his wife, Fran, Mason City; Albert Herrera Jr. and his wife, Barbara, Joplin, Mo.; Joe Herrera and his wife, Sally, Mason City, and Rich Herrera and his wife, Sharon, West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, Teri Herrera, Seattle, Wash.; Lori Alitz, Mason City; Jean Schultz, Mason City; Jeff Herrera, Seattle, Wash.; Randy Herrera, Cleveland, Ohio; Toni Herrera of California; Jodi Herrera, Bend, Ore.; Sheri Herrera, Mason City; Joleen Herrera, Mason City, and Staci Herrera, Mason City; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Concepcion.

 

Amy H. Crow

INDIAN SPRINGS, Nev. — Amy H. Crow, 94, formerly of 2323 23rd St. S.W., Mason City, Iowa, died Friday (Oct. 10, 1997) at the Cheyenne Care Center, North Las Vegas.

Amy H. Crow was born Oct. 4, 1903, in Hanlontown, Iowa, the daughter of George and Ida (Brattrud) Olson.

Amy married William Crow on July 3, 1932, in Albert Lea, Minn.

She was a homemaker and had been a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa.

She loved to knit, crochet and tat.

She is survived by her husband, William, Indian Springs, Nev.; one daughter, Esther Drake, Indian Springs, Nev.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hazel Rafferty and Idella Walker, both of Mason City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one son.

 

Donald Blanchard

BRISTOW — Donald Blanchard, 86, of Bristow, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont. Burial will be in the Hopkinton Cemetery, Hopkinton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Donald Blanchard was born Sept. 15, 1911, in Hopkinton.

Survivors include one sister, Wilma Mayberry of Lost Nation.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

 

Neita Duncan

DUMONT — Neita Duncan, 95, of Dumont, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at the Dumont Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dumont United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marilyn Winch and the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery.

Neita Duncan was born June 21, 1902, in Butler County.

Survivors include one daughter, LaVonne Kelly of Dumont; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine brothers and sisters.

 

Justin Nyman

BANCROFT — Justin Nyman, 10-year-old son of Darrell and Marlene Nyman of rural Bancroft, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at Blank Children's Hospital, Des Moines, as the result of a farm accident on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Swea City, with the Rev. Robert Kobler officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Township Cemetery, Bancroft.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, and one hour prior to time of services on Wednesday at the church.

Justin James Nyman was born on April 23, 1987, at Mason City.

Justin is survived by his parents, Darrell and Marlene Nyman of rural Bancroft; two sisters, Allison and Kristin, both at home; his maternal grandmother, Patricia "Pat" Dobberphul of Aberdeen, S.D.; his paternal grandparents, Wayne and Marjorie Nyman of Bancroft; also several aunts, uncles and cousins..

Justin was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and one uncle.

 

Louden Swain Beenken

WESLEY — Louden Swain Beenken, 11-month-old son of Dean and Tracy Beenken of Wesley, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Drew Zahn, the Rev. Edwin Harp and the Rev. Ted Henderson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Louden Swain Beenken was born on Oct. 24, 1996, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona, to Dean and Tracy Johnson Beenken.

Louden is survived by his parents, Dean and Tracy Beenken one brother, Shawn Meyering Beenken of Wesley; his maternal grandparents, Gerald and Sharon Stoulil, Algona; his paternal grandparents, Merlin and Marlis Beenken, Wesley; his maternal great-grandparents, Clifford and Theresa Woodbeck, Emmetsburg; his maternal great-grandmother, Marie Stoulil, West Bend; and his paternal great-grandfather, Martin Sveen, of Leland; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Louden was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather and three paternal great-grandparents.

 

Margaret Steinbach

BLUE EARTH, Minn. — Margaret Steinbach, 107, formerly of Blue Earth, died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at Parker Oaks in Winnebago.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Blue Earth, with Father John Ozbun officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Blue Earth.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton Funeral Home, 218 W. Sixth St., Blue Earth.

Margaret Barbara Schell was born June 14, 1890, in Germany. She came to Topeka, Kan., in 1900.

She married John Steinbach on Jan. 9, 1911, in Topeka, Kan. They farmed in Garden City, Kan., until coming to the Blue Earth area in 1932. They farmed in the area until the death of John in 1937.

Margaret was employed at the United Hospital in Blue Earth until her retirement. She had lived at Parker Oaks since May of 1983.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons, Nick Steinbach and his wife, Faye, of St. Louis Park; and Joe Steinbach and his wife, Rose, of Hugo; five daughters, Margaret Roskop of Austin, Kay Newville and her husband, Ben, of Winnebago; Mary Steinbach of Blue Earth; Betty Kohler and her husband, Lawrence, of Mason City, Iowa; and Theresa Todorovich and her husband, George, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Steinbach, Gryman, Okla.; 36 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sons, one daughter, six grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Brandi Jean Barth

BELOIT, Wis. — Brandi Jean Barth, 21, of 1866 Murphy Woods Road, died on Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, as the result of an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, with the Rev. Charles P. Larson officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, in Greenwood Cemetery, Preston, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Daley-Murphy-Wisch & Associates Funeral Home.

She was born April 23, 1976, in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter, of James Barry and T.J. Olson Barth.

Brandi graduated from Beloit Memorial High School, Class of 1994, where she was a member of Treble Choir, D.E.C.A. and the Peer Helper Group.

Brandi was employed by Reynolds Wheels. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her mother, T.J.; her brother, Jeremy Barth, at home; maternal grandparents, Jess and Esther Olson of Holmen, Wis.; Marlys Drenth of Springfield, Ore.; and Richard and Gerry Tetrault, Coralville, Iowa; paternal grandfather, Carl Barth of Preston, Minn.; great-grandmother, Hazel Bernice Trom of Fargo, N.D.; godmother, Jenny Showers of DeForest, Wis.; godfather, Terry Barth, Preston, Minn.; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Barry Barth; her maternal grandmother, Marie Olson; and her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Barth.

Frieda Scheidecker Benz was born Oct. 30, 1901, in Butler County.

She is survived by one sister, Lydia Schilling of Plainfield.

MASON CITY — Luella T. Rossum, 101, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Oct. 12, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett officiating.

Luella was born Feb. 14, 1896, in North Dakota, the daughter of Lars and Taletta (Birkedal) Motland.

She was united in marriage to Anton Rossum on June 17, 1915, in Cerro Gordo County.

They farmed in Mitchell County until 1933, then moved to Plymouth and then to Mason City in 1935, living here until her death.

Luella was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, church circle, African Violet Club and was a Goldstar mother.

Survivors include grandchildren, Gary B. McGowan and his wife, Carmen, of Yakima, Wash.; Michael D. Rossum of Modesto, Calif.; Roger A. Rossum and his wife, Debbie, of Mason City, Russell E. Rossum of Waverly; Mary Ann Rossum of Mason City, Dennis D. Rossum of Mason City; two great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; one great-great-grandchild; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Rossum of Mason City; a special nephew, Laverne Sandvick and his wife, June, of Mason City; as well as other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anton; four sons, Althon, Royce, Gordon and one in infancy; five sisters; and three brothers.

 

Otto C. Mohring

CHARLES CITY — Otto C. Mohring, 74, of Charles City, died Monday (Oct. 13, 1997) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sunnyside Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Otto C. Mohring was born Sept. 29, 1923, in rural Charles City.

Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Charles City; one daughter, Eunice E. Merrill of Charles City; one son, Wayne Mohring of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Sherbon, Charles City, and Margaret Blanck of Waterloo; and two brothers, Ervin Mohring of Charles City, and Alfred Mohring, Austin, Minn.
