Harvey D. Mitchell Sr.

GARNER — Harvey D. Mitchell Sr., 75, of Garner, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. Garner.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society.

Harvey Daniel Mitchell, the son of Daniel "Smith" and Ada (Furndell) Mitchell was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Sutton, Neb.

He graduated from Sutton High School in 1939 and furthered his education by correspondence in electronics through Iowa State University in Ames.

On Feb. 4, 1944, he was married to Thelma Rogness at the Faith Lutheran Church, in Miller.

He was employed by the REC in Garner from 1945 to 1967 where he was the member service director.

He then worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City from 1967 to 1987 as a line superintendent, delivered motor homes from 1987 to 1991 and from 1991 to 1997 as a tour guide.

Harvey also operated a TV repair service for several years.

He enjoyed his family, golfing, traveling and playing games.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Paul Men's Club, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Financial Secretary, Deacon, President of the Congregation, member of the Evangelism Team, International Lutheran Layman's League and was past-president of the NE Zone of the Lutheran Layman's League.

He was also a member of the Garner Lions Club, where he served as Lion Tamer. He was past-president of t he Iowa Chapter of International Electric Inspectors and was also a member of the North Iowa Travelers.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Mitchell, of Garner; three children, Harvey "Dan" Mitchell Jr., and his wife, Cari (Abels), and children, Mitzi and Mindi of Hastings, Minn.; Dennis Mitchell and his wife, Barb, and children, Shayne, Caryn and Bryan, of Elk River, Minn., and Deb Schmidt and husband, Mike, and children, Christian and Gretchen, of South Haven, Minn.; two brothers, LeRoy "Pete" Mitchell and his wife, Maxine, of Fremont, Neb., and Carroll Mitchell and his wife, Dyllis, of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Hetty Jane Markin and her husband, Wyman "Bud", of Lincoln, Neb. And many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Raymond 'Ray' Duane Rosenberg Jr.

ST. ANSGAR — Ray Rosenberg, 43, of Americus, Ga., passed away Sunday (Sept. 28, 1997) at Phoebe Putney Cancer Center in Albany, Ga.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, Iowa, with the Rev. Robert Porisch, officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Ray was born in Mitchell County, Iowa, on March 20, 1954, baptized and confirmed at Immanual Lutheran Church in the Lutheran faith. Ray graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1972. He moved around the United States living in Colorado, Minnesota, Waterloo, Iowa and settling in Savannah, Georgia in 1990 where he established his own business. He moved to Americus, Georgia in 1996.

Ray enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at his grandparents, where his grandfather, Archie introduced him to fishing, hunting, and trapping, which were his favorite hobbies until his illness. Ray belonged to a hunting lodge in Georgia and spent vacations in Quebec with his mother, his son, Ray III; his wife, Celine and her family.

Ray is survived by his wife, Celine Dallaire of Americus, Ga.; three sons, Raymond Rosenberg III, of Americus, Ga.; Brian K. Rosenberg, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Matthew K. Rosenberg, of Waterloo; one daughter, Heidi Harms, of Merrillville, Ind.; one granddaughter, Hannah Harms, Merrillville, Ind ; a son-in-law, Mark Harms, of Merrillville, Ind ; mother, Barbara Rosenberg, St. Ansgar; two brothers, Randy, of Heidelberg, Germany, and Rick of Los Angeles, Calif.; five sisters, Terri Johnson, Elmore, Minn., Karen Kittleson, St. Ansgar, Sharon Krebsbach, Cold Springs, Minn.; Rebecca Streit, Monticello, Iowa; and Debra White, Mason City, Iowa; maternal grandmother, Gwendolyn Pike, St. Ansgar, and paternal grandmother, Anna Rosenberg, St. Ansgar.

Ray was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Duane Rosenberg Sr. And both grandfathers, Archie Pike and George Rosenberg.

Robert D. Werstein

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Robert D. Werstein, 48, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Mason City, passed away Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) in Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 1997.

Further arrangements are incomplete.

Henry P. Crockett

BRITT — Henry P. Crockett, 88, of Britt, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Britt.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Ewing Funeral Home, Britt.

D.J. 'Djura' Stefanovic

HAZLETON — D.J. "Djura" Stefanovic, 80, 1055 Isaac Ave., Hazleton, died Monday morning (Sept. 29, 1997) at his home from a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Alan Walkenhauer, officiating. Burial will be held in Fontana Cemetery, Hazleton, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Hintz-Geilenfeld Funeral Home, Oelwein.

He was born on April 26, 1917, in Kormont, Yugoslavia to Luka and Leposava Stefanovic.

He married Karoline Rink on June 11, 1948 in Gnadenburg, Germany.

He was a welder for Clay Equipment in Waterloo and farmed.

Survivors include his wife, Karoline; seven daughters, Ingeborg (Leonard) Brezina, of Middle Amana, Iowa, Krsmanija (Gene) Craig, of Mason City, Iowa, Angelina Stefanovic, of Opportunity Village, in Clear Lake, Iowa, Dobrina (Jim) Folsom) of Oelwein, Peladija (John) Woodson, of Oelwein, Monika (Robert) Roepke, of Oelwein and Sonija (Richard) Stefanovic-Wessels, of Hazleton; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Jenadija, Krsmanija, Angelina, Dobrina and Peladija, all of Yugoslavia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luka and Leposava; a son, Kosta; and a grandson, Les.

Robert Cavanaugh

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Robert Cavanaugh, 47, of St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died at his home Saturday (Sept. 27, 1997) after a lengthy illness.

Military graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Fort Snelling, Minneapolis, Minn.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.

Robert was born Aug. 29, 1950, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Kaye (Lattimer) Cavanaugh.

He is survived by two daughters, Margo and Melisa; his father, Thomas Cavanaugh, Mason City; four sisters, Mary Beth Cavanaugh, Harve De Grace, Md., Kathy McMillan and her husband, John, Elgin, Iowa, Jane Cavanaugh, Mendota, Minn., and Margaret Cavanaugh, Burlington, Iowa, and one brother, Bill Cavanaugh and his wife, Martha, Charles City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and his grandparents.

Jeanne Goetzinger

ALBANY, Ore. — Jeanne Goetzinger, 82, formerly of Riverside, Calif., died Sept. 15, 1997, from complications of old age at the Albany General Hospital, Albany, Ore.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany, Ore. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, West Covina.

Fisher Funeral Home, Albany, handled the arrangements.

Mrs. Goetzinger, a nature of Audubon, Iowa, lived in Riverside 24 years before moving to Albany, Ore. eight years ago. She was co-owner and operator of the Marble Rock Produce in Marble Rock, Iowa.

She later was self-employed in child care for 12 years and was a self-employed dressmaker and seamstress.

She graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Iowa.

Mrs. Goetzinger founded the "Driveway Club" in Riverside.

She was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Riverside. In Albany, she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Altar society.

Mrs. Goetzinger is survived by a son, Gerald, of Albany; four daughters, Margaret Pringle, of Albany, Mary Halley, of Riverside, Ruth Alfeo, of Port Aransas, Texas , and Karen Lines, of Waterloo, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis Roberts, of Junction City, Kan., and Clarence Roberts, of Seattle; and a sister, Mary Barr, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Evergreen Hospice in care of Fisher Funeral Home, P.O. Box 156, Albany, Ore. 97321.

Ethel (Ames) Ransom

MASON CITY — Ethel (Ames) Ransom, 92, of Shalom Towers, Mason City, died Monday afternoon (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Ethel Ransom Memorial Fund.

Ethel was born May 20, 1905, the daughter of George and Laura (Millard) Long in Lake Township. In 1923, she graduated from Clear Lake High School. Following high school she was united in marriage to Lloyd Ames, and to them were born nine beautiful children. Later, she was united in marriage to C. Edmond Ransom. As a life-long resident of the area, she was a cook for Freddie's and Lytle's Restaurants.

Ethel was a very determined woman who enjoyed camping in Rockwell and Rock Falls. She also enjoyed taking her grandchildren fishing, watching the Twins play baseball, or the Hawkeye's play basketball on T.V. During the summer and early fall, her time was spent gardening and canning. When not sending out birthday cards, Ethel could be found crocheting, playing cards or Bingo. But what she really loved was her apartment and friends at the Shalom Towers.

Ethel is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Whitehurst Harlam of Clear Lake, and Gladys Siems of Charles City; six sons, Bob and his wife, Marlis Ames, of Rockwell, Francis and his wife, Bev Ames, of Klemme, Dale Ames of Wayzata, Minn., Roger and his wife, Leona Ames, of Mason City, Bill and his wife, Virginia Ames, of Rockwell, Jerry and his wife, Barb Ames, of Ankeny; two step-daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Chuck (Ruth) Norris, and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn (Lois) Hubbard; two step-sons, Keith and his wife, June Ransom, and Don and his wife, Lucille Ransom; two sisters, Evelyn Dyre of Nora Springs, and Arleen Higgins of Mason City; 32 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; one daughter, Marjorie; three sisters; one brother; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and two great-great-granddaughters.

William K. Burzette

INDIANOLA — William K. Burzette, 61, of Indianola, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Peterson Funeral Home. There will be no burial, the body was donated to science.

William Burzette was born in Iowa City.

Survivors include his wife, Ramona, of Indianola; three daughters, Sandee Overstreet of Polk City, Dr. Becky Burzette of Ames, and Billie Bingaman of Indianola; two sons, Kelly of Indianola, and Greg of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Bob of San Diego, Calif., and Don of Stewartville, Minn.; three sisters, Jan Adams of Osage, Sheila Riden of Charles City, and Sherry Quimby of Charles City.

Mildred Snook

GARNER — Mildred Snook, 86, of Garner, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Concord Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at the Concord Care Center Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Bloesch officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the Concord Care Center Chapel. Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred I. Snook was born June 26, 1911, in Brown County, Kan.

Survivors include one nephew, John Johnson, of Vacaville, Calif.; and a special friend, Debra Haugen of Klemme.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a nephew.

Lucile Arvilla Chapman

BELMOND — Lucile Arvilla (Klassi) Chapman, 91, of Belmond, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 1997) at the Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a brief illness of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Ken Fineran, officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Lucile was born to Samual and Elizabeth (Mauer) Klassi, on Oct. 18, 1905, on the family farm in Renwick, Iowa.

Lucile lived on the family farm with her brothers and sister until graduating from Vernon High School in 1924.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, college in Boulder, Colo., finishing her teaching education at Drake University.

Lucile taught school for 43 years without a single sick day, first at a one room school house in LuVerne Township, then teacher and principle at Goodell, Iowa, before teaching at Belmond, retiring in 1971. Lucile was very involved in the community and her church, United Methodist Church, with 50 years of service.

Lucile was united in marriage with Grant S. Chapman, on Aug. 6, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home at 116 Third St. S.E., and lived there for their entire lives.

Lucile and Grant enjoyed dancing, going to the Surf Ballroom every Friday night from 1937-1967. Lucile loved gardening, sewing and baking. She was well known for her delicious cinnamon rolls.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Chapman, of Denver, Iowa and her fiance, Dick Hansen; a sister, Lena Wolf, Humboldt; two grandchildren, Stephen J. Stadtlander and his wife, Pam, of Trabuco, Calif., and Susan Kazarian and her husband, Kory, of Waterloo; and four great-grandchildren, Jesseca, Thomas and Sarah Stadtlander, of Trabuco, Calif., and Grant Kazarian, of Waterloo. She was expecting her fifth great-grandchild this January.

Preceding her in death were her mother and father; siblings, Sam and Wilbur Klassi; and her beloved husband, Grant, who died June 10, 1997.

Lester N. Larson

NORTHWOOD — Lester N. Larson, 89, of Northwood, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sunset Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating.

There will be no visitation, Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. South, is in charge of the arrangements.

Lester N. Larson was born Jan. 30, 1908, in Roland, the son of Marse and Birdie Larson. He attended and received his education in the Bolan School System. After completing his education he helped his family on the family farm near Bolan, before moving to Mason City in 1930. He was united in marriage to Alice Bakketun in 1936, she preceded him in death on March 7, 1977. After moving to Mason City he worked for Decker Meat Packing Company for several years and also worked for the Farm Service Company as a truck driver in Mason City for 26 years until his retirement. Lester had been a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood since May 21, 1994.

He enjoyed his vacations fishing in Minnesota.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City since 1940, and was a member of the Teamsters Union.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia A. Baese and her husband, Roy P., of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren, Laura A. Baese and David P. Baese and his wife, April, of St. Louis; two sisters, Lillian Furleigh of the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood, and Bernice DeVorak of River Falls, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Inez Bakketun of Northwood, and Charlotte McLaughlin of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Glenore Jaspers.

Alverda A. Neuwohner

OSAGE — Alverda A. Neuwohner, 93, of Osage, and formerly of Dubuque, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, with the Rev. Edgar Kurt officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the Regina Caeli Chapel at the cemetery after 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Alverda A. Neuwohner was born July 26, 1904, in Bellevue.

Survivors include one daughter, Norma O'Harran of Bettendorf; one son, James Neuwohner of Osage; two grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister.

Dewane G. Roath

MASON CITY — Dewane G. Roath, 77, of 1215 Sixth St. S.E., died Sunday (Sept. 28, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Covenant Church, Highway 18 East at Ohio Avenue, with the Rev. Rich Murray officiating. Interment will be at the Bethel Lutheran Brethren Cemetery, Joice, with the Rev. Richard Rogness, officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Dewane G. Roath Memorial Fund.

Dewane Guy Roath was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Fertile, Iowa, the son of Ira and Theresa (Tweed) Roath.

Dewane married Mureen Rogness on Nov. 19, 1944, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, in Joice, Iowa.

Dewane worked for International Harvester for 37 years retiring in 1982.

Dewane enjoyed working with guns and had a great love for fishing.

He attended First Covenant Church in Mason City.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mureen Roath, of Mason City; two daughters, Marlys Aus and husband, Duane, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Connie Wilcox and her husband, Robert, of Mason City; one son, Verlyn Roath, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Donald Aus, Moorhead, Minn., Lonnie Hansen and his wife, Vonnie, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Lori Mueller and husband, Rolie, of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Robbie Wilcox, of Mason City, Christine Posenkany and her husband, Greg, of Mason City; five great-grandchildren, Sara & Jessica Hansen, Ariel, Bethani and Taylor Mueller; two brothers, Gary Roath and his wife, Alice, of Mason City, Boyd Roath and his wife, Grace, of Mason City; one sister, Iris DeWall and her husband, Harris, of Mason City; six brothers-in-law, Lavern, Richard, Rollin, Glenn, Burdean and Kennis Rogness.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruby C. Schoby

BRITT — Ruby C. Schoby, 90, of Britt, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at the New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. Robert Doge officiating. Burial will be held at 4 p.m. at the East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Ruby C. Schoby was born June 22, 1907, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Survivors include five daughters, Joan Sweers and Marjorie Schnath, both of Britt, Dorothy Hartinger of New Hope, Minn., Linda Becker of Hartford, S.D., and Kathy Munson of New Hampton; one son, Fred Schoby Jr. of Latimer; one sister, Margaret Carson of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, one brother, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

William P. Eno

SHEFFIELD — William P. Eno, 87, of Sheffield, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Rulapaugh officiating and the Rev. Robert Beard assisting. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Grarup Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William P. Eno was born April 10, 1910, in Sheffield.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Lamb of Moorhead; one son, William F. Eno of Sheffield; one sister, Mary Eno Olson of Monona; one brother, Walter Eno of Sheffield; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and one sister.

Violet May Borchardt

PLYMOUTH — Violet May Borchardt, 75, of Plymouth, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly.

Davis F. Henderson

CHARLES CITY — Davis F. Henderson, 85, of Charles City, died Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from 12 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Violet May Borchardt

PLYMOUTH — Violet May Borchardt, 75, of Plymouth, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Inurnment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth.

According to her wishes, her body was cremated. Friends may call one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the Chapel.

Violet May Borchardt was born on May 29, 1922, in Mason City, the daughter of Wilber L. and Ora May (Beddow) Mansmith.

She attended and received her education in the Mason City School System.

She was united in marriage to Gerald George Borchardt Sr. on July 1, 1946, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1994.

Throughout her life, she worked as a cook in several places in Mason City.

She enjoyed playing 500 cards, crocheting and flowers, but her great love and enjoyment was her family.

She attended the Free Methodist Church in Plymouth.

Beverly was married to Wayne A. Page on Sept. 11, 1949, in Mason City.

Beverly was active in the Mason City Trail Riders Association and Naomi Circle at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

She loved music, dancing, flowers, mystery stories, birds and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne A. Page, of Mason City; his son, Steven A. Page and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; three grandsons, Brandon, Bryce and Brock Page, of Mason City; two great-granddaughters, Miranda and Justice; one brother, Roger Christian and his wife, Ardie, of Mason City; two sisters, Lavonne Thornbury and her husband, Maynard, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Janice Smith and her husband, Ron, of Maui, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.

Davis Floyd Henderson was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Lake Mills.

McALLEN, TEXAS — Dalton Lewis Rodemeyer, 68, of McAllen, Texas, died on Wednesday (Oct. 1, 1997) at the Comfort House in McAllen, Texas.

BRITT — H. Paul Crockett, 88, of Britt, former voc ag teacher at Britt High School, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 30, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Britt United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert D. Dodge officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with a 7 p.m. Odd Fellows Service and an 8 p.m. Masonic Service.

Mr. Crockett was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Burlington, Kan. He received his early education in the Kansas and Missouri school systems, later moving to Ames, Iowa, where he graduated from Ames High School and Iowa State College, with a bachelor and masters degree in agricultural education and economics.

A life-long teacher, Mr. Crockett served school systems in New Sharon and Eddyville, Iowa, before moving to Jackson, Mich., in 1937, where he taught junior college economics and coached basketball.

In 1946, Crockett moved his family to Britt, Iowa, where he taught voc ag in the high school until 1960. His interest in students carried over into scouting; where as scout master for Troop 32 he administered an aggressive advancement program that produced 22 Eagle Scouts in a span of 10 years.

He was a 32nd-Degree Mason and a 49-year member of the Masonic Lodge. At the age of 80, he became the oldest Iowa Mason to qualify as a Masonic Instructor; and at the age of 83, he qualified as District Lecturer.

In 1960, Crockett and his wife, Frances, moved to Minot, N.D., where he taught economics at Minot State University for 15 years. When he retired in 1975, the North Dakota Board of Regents granted him professor emeritus status in economics.

The Crocketts returned to Britt in 1975, where they lived their retirement years.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Wallen and her husband, Harold, of Britt; ; three sons, Paul and his wife, Georgia, of Minneapolis, Dan and his wife, Carol, of Astoria, Ore., and David of Fargo, N.D. ; a daughter-in-law, Judy Crockett, of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Robert Crockett, Renee Thompson, John Crockett, Allison Crockett, Andrea Crockett Sticha, Karrie Wallen, Penny Brazzel, Paul J. Crockett, and Lesley Warrens; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Wm. P. Matthews, of New Castle Upon Tyne, England.

Mr. Crockett was preceded in death by his parents, Henry P. And Mary Elizabeth Crockett, and his wife, Frances, who passed away April 18, 1986.

Marjorie A. Plunkett

MASON CITY — Marjorie A. Plunkett, 96, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Monday (Sept. 29, 1997) at home with her family in Riverside, Ill.

The funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. Presiding was a close family friend, Father Daniel Hartnett, S.J., who will be returning with the family to preside at a memorial service to be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at the Sacred Heart Church, Rockwell, Iowa, with burial to follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.

Marjorie was born in 1901, in Rockwell, Iowa, to Dennis and Catherine ( Kelsh) O'Connor. She was the youngest of eight and was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, and husband, Leo Plunkett. When her husband was burned to death at his place of employment in 1943, her daughter, Denise, was 2 years old and son, John, was 9 months old.

After suffering a stroke in March of 1997, she was confined to bed in her home. Her daughter, Denise, was her primary care-giver, with help from other members of the family. She had a very peaceful death, surrounded by all of her family.

Marjorie was a former member of Holy Family Parish and was active in the St. Ritas Circle. She graduated from Drake University and taught in Mason City for 32 years. She retired in 1966 and continued to live in Mason City until the fall of 1983, when she moved to Illinois to join her family.

"Mom was the last of a large family which included 86 first cousins," said her daughter, Denise, also of Riverside. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by her son, John and his wife, Mary; two grandsons, Christopher and Benjamin, and his wife, Catherine; and a great-grandson, Tyler, all living in or near Riverside.

Dorthy J. Monson was born in Webster City, Iowa, on Oct. 4, 1929, the daughter of Frank and Lois (Brown) Hurst. She attended school in Webster City and graduated from Webster City High School. She began working in Des Moines.

In 1952, she was married to Milton Monson in Des Moines. The couple has made their home in Forest City for most of their married lives. Dorothy was a member of the Winnebago Lutheran Church and active in Circle.

She liked to knit and do crafts. Dorthy enjoyed being around people and loved to visit. Her pet cats were well cared for and she enjoyed her yard and flowers. She and Milton traveled to Arlingen, Texas, to spend the winters. She was a dedicated bingo player.

She is survived by her husband, Milton Monson, of Forest City; two sons, Kenny Monson, of Garner, and John M. Monson, of Forest City; three daughters, Paula Book, of Austin, Minn., Darla Thorson, Joice, and Sandy Higbee, of Mason City; also 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson.

Arthur E. Ashland

CLEAR LAKE — Arthur E. Ashland, 76, of 2217 S. Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 2, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association.

Art was born July 10, 1921, in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County, on the family farm, the son of John and Eva (Hanschu) Ashland. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1937. Art farmed in the Clear Lake area and then attended Iowa State University, Ames.

Art served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a first lieutenant and flew a B25 over 32 missions during the European Theater.

He moved back to Clear Lake following the war and worked for Duesenberg Construction. He later drove a car transport, until 1959, out of Pontiac, Mich., then moved back to Clear Lake. He operated a trucking business and later farmed for over 20 years.

Art married Eunice Bienert on Nov. 24, 1961, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. They moved to present home in Clear Lake in 1972.

Art worked for Farm Bureau for over 20 years as hail crop adjuster. He was well known in the area for snow removal.

He loved to fish, bowl, watch all sports, farm, ride his motorcycle, and feed his cats. He served on the Clear Lake V.F.W. honor guard for many years.

Art was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed by all.

Art was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, a life member of the Clear Lake V.F.W. and a charter member of the Clear Lake AmVets.

Art is survived by his wife, Eunice Ashland, Clear Lake; four children, Kathy Ashland, Las Vegas, Nev.; Dixie Crump and her husband, Richard, St. Joseph, Mo.; Donna Hansen and her husband, Darrell, Pekin, Ill., and Diane Heibel and her husband, Conrad, Thornton; grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 21; brother of Ron Ashland and his wife, Betty, Blair, Neb.; Wayne Ashland and his wife, Joan, Clear Lake, and John Ashland and his wife, Barbara, Richfield, Minn.; two aunts, Edna Ashland, Clear Lake, and Louise Ashland, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Evanson; and one brother, Albert Ashland.

Herman Harms Sr.

TITONKA — Herman Harms Sr., 87, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ramsey Reformed Church with the Rev. Dennis Redeker officiating. Burial will be in the Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Herman Harms Sr. was born Aug. 1, 1910, in Kossuth County.

Survivors include his wife, Wyona Harms, of Titonka; two daughters, Gladys Hansen and Janice Moore, both of Titonka; six sons, Harold Harms, Herman Harms Jr., Roger Harms and Irvin Harms, all of Titonka, Robert Harms of Buffalo Center, and Daryl Harms of Spencer; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, two sisters, and one grandson.

Florine Fredriksen

CLEAR LAKE — Florine Fredriksen, 70, of 24 Bayside Ave., died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. South, with the Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a scriptural prayer service beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Florine Fredriksen was born Dec. 3, 1926, in Mason City, the daughter of Roy and Nellie (Woodyard) Luther. She married Laurence Fredriksen on Nov. 15, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Florine grew up in Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1944. She attended Mason City Junior College and graduated from Mercy Nursing Program in Mason City. She then worked as a nurse at Mercy Hospital and also at Opportunity Village for many years.

Florine enjoyed traveling on cruises, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and reading. She was an active volunteer in the community. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the VFW Auxiliary, the Iowa Blacksmiths and Welders Association Auxiliary, and the North Iowa Wine Club.

Survivors include her husband, Laurence Fredriksen of Clear Lake; four children, Jon Fredriksen and his wife, Kathleen Golding, of Washington, D.C., Mary Lauck and her husband, Allan, of Algona, Paul Fredriksen and his wife, Ranae, of Clear Lake, and Ann Kaduce and her husband, Tim, of St. Paul, Minn.; five grandchildren, Christopher and Allana Lauck, both of Algona, Nick and Rebecca Fredriksen, both of Clear Lake, and Seth Kaduce of St. Paul, Minn.; two nephews, Mike Blair of Greenville, S.C., and Allan Frederickson of Boyce, Va.; and one niece, Judy McNames of Fort Jones, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Joseph and Mark; and one sister, Naomi Blair.

Mae D. Merriss

MASON CITY — Mae D. Merriss, 84, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. , with Father Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mae D. Merriss was born March 27, 1913, in Rockwell, the daughter of David and Loretta (Lisle) McCauley. She married Kenneth J. Merriss Sr. on June 29, 1932, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

Mae grew up in the Rockwell area and graduated from Mason City High School. She was employed for 27 years with Mercy Hospital in the Obstetrics Department.

Mae was a Hawkeye and Notre Dame fan and was an avid reader. She was a good family spiritual leader and had a special love for her family.

Survivors include four children, Marlene M. Logan and her husband, Maurie, Poplar Grove, Ill., Sharon M. Kielty and her husband, Jack, San Antonio, Texas, Kenneth J. Merriss Jr. and his wife, Sherrie, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Marcia R. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; three brothers, Lyle, Bill and Francis McCauley; and one sister, Mildred Warin.

James P. Michaelis

CHARLES CITY — James P. Michaelis, 68, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens with graveside military honors conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at 9 a.m. Monday until time of services.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

James Paul Michaelis was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Charles City.

Survivors include his wife, Darlys, of Charles City; two daughters, Julie Poggenpohl of Muskogee, Okla., and Janell Olesen of Charles City; three sisters, Mildred Tompkins of Cedar Falls, Betty Colonnese of Mesa, Ariz., and Louise McIntosh of Waterloo; a brother, Don Michaelis of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a great-granddaughter.

Oscar Jordahl

FOREST CITY — Oscar Jordahl, 90, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1997) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Oscar Jordahl was born Nov. 25, 1906, in Madison, Wis.

Survivors include two daughters, Noreen Davis of Lima, Ohio, and Jolaine Tweeten of Woolstock; three sons, Burnell Jordahl of Enid, Okla., Weldon Jordahl of Forest City, and Owen Jordahl of Safford, Ariz.; one sister, Berdina Quisling of Lake Mills; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.

Duane T. Bauman

ALLISON — Duane T. Bauman, 59, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Duane T. Bauman memorial fund in care of the family.

Duane Thomas Bauman was born Dec. 16, 1937, in Waverly.

Survivors include his wife, Georgette, of Allison; three daughters, Gwenda Bauman of Lakewood, Colo., Denise Friesth and Donita Greenough, both of Urbandale; two sons, Leon Bauman of Olathe, Kan., and Jason Bauman of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one brother, Dale Bauman of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

BURT — Evelyn Angus, 84, died Friday (Oct. 3, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Roland Emond officiating. Burial will be in the East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft.

Evelyn Angus was born Oct. 2, 1913, in Lone Rock.

Survivors include her husband, Delmar, of Burt; two daughters, Georgia Christenson and Joyce Angus of Algona; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bertha Newbrough of Lone Rock.

She was preceded in death by his parents, one son, four sisters, and three brothers.
