Eva A. Hartwig

NORA SPRINGS — Eva A. Hartwig, 103, of 210 E. Congress, died Sunday (Oct. 19, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.

There will be no public visitation according to the family's wishes. Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, is serving the family.

Eva Amelia Hofler Hartwig was born Aug. 25, 1894, in Rock Grove Township, Floyd County, the daughter of Frank and Emma (Boettcher) Hofler. She graduated from Mason City High School.

She attended ISU at Ames, and taught several terms in rural school in Portland Township. She also took some training in the pathological department at Penn State.

On Aug. 30, 1922, she married John Hartwig in a ceremony at her parents' home, rural Mason City. Her family still treasures the small, horse-drawn cutter recalling that John courted Eva (14 miles one way) in it. When asked how he found the way home on stormy nights, he would reply that "the horses knew the way."

They were engaged in farming in Floyd County. She loved rural life and took pride in raising chickens, flowers and vegetables.

When their three daughters were young, they each had a small garden plot. Colorful nasturtiums were usually the order of the day; large seeds to sow and easy stems to pick.

She and her husband took great pride in keeping the home place attractive. They were amazed, in recent years, at the ease with which the big yard was mowed compared to the cumbersome horse-drawn sickle mower and the hand-swung scythe of years ago.

Many delicious meals were served to threshers as the crew of neighbors would move in to thresh the shocks of oats. Water for scrubbing off the itchy oat straw was warmed outside by the sun in big tubs. Then it was into the house for Eva's delicious meal in the dining room kept cool by the closing of the kitchen door and the pulling of the dark green shades against the noonday sun.

Life on the farm kept Eva very busy. She was active in Extension work; 4-H activities and the Ladies Guild of St. Luke Lutheran Church.

As part of her church work in the '30s and '40s, she especially enjoyed canning and furnishing various commodities for the Children's Home in Waverly.

In 1954, upon being nominated by a close neighbor, she was pleased to be chosen as a Farm Bureau Master Farm Homemaker.

The couple retired to Nora Springs in 1956. One of the many pleasures of her life in town was having the time to carry on a lively correspondence with some of her grandchildren who were attending Wartburg College, Waldorf College, etc. Her letters were enjoyed and usually filled with news of home, a few original quips and maybe a clipped cartoon or two.

She enjoyed working alongside her husband as a Kewanis Kween at pancake days and various other projects. They also made many new friends on various bus tours.

In later years when in her 80s and 90s (and more) she continued to be thankful for the gift of a keen mind and nimble fingers that created many beautiful afghans.

She also delighted in baking sweet rolls and sugar cookies for church bake sales and for her family. Her grandchildren could still look forward to her letters, wherever they were located on the face of the globe! Her well-worn atlas bears many arrows and lines which marked the locations.

Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Coffey, Mason City; seven grandchildren and families, Gary Shanks, his wife, Candy and their children, Allison and Carolyn, Middletown, Pa.; Wendy Schramn, her husband, Mike and their children, Mari and Aaron, Chelan, Wash.; Mark Lockwood, his wife, Jodi, and their son, John, Dubuque; Marlene Greve and her husband, Bob, Adrian, Minn.; Jennifer Henry and her husband, Jerry, Cedar Rapids; Judy Rottinghaus, her husband, Dan, and their children Eric and Nicole, Nashua; Colleen Sutcliffe, her husband, Kevin and their children, Kaitlin and Kevin; one son-in-law, Duane Shanks and his wife, Edna, Nora Springs; one son-in-law, Larry Lockwood and his wife, Janet, Sheffield; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; three of their four daughters, Shirley as an infant; LaBonna Shanks; and Charlotte Lockwood; a loved son-in-law, Neil Coffey; and one brother, Art Hofler.

To God be the glory as Eva Amelia meets her loving Savior face to face. Those who have gone before and have looked forward to her arrival, walking to meet her with a sure and steady step is her husband, John, cradling in his arms their infant daughter, Shirley Irene.

Rushing to greet her with open arms, their footsteps light upon the heather, are their two other daughters, LaBonna Ruth and Charlotte Marie.

Strolling along beside them, with a welcoming grin on his face, is son-in-law, Neil Keith. On her short pony legs "Pepsi" trots along beside him as "Lady" barks her usual welcome.

To God belongs the praise for the comfort of this joyous reunion.
