Juanita Helen Sharp

MASON CITY  



Juanita Helen Sharp, 84, of 843 Sixth St. S.W., Apt. #4, died

Sunday (May 18, 1997) at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland

of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial

Park Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel

and will continue until time of services on Thursday.



Juanita Helen Sharp was born Dec. 30, 1912, daughter of William

and Kitty (Wise) Simmons.



She married David Sharp at First United Methodist Church in

Mason City.



Juanita grew up in Mason City and attended Mason City Schools.



She worked in many restaurants including the Canton Cafe, the

Park Inn, Coastas and was a cook at the VFW.



She loved to play cards and 500 at the Community Action Center.



She was an avid Cubs baseball fan. Juanita loved spending time

with all her family.



Survivors include seven children, Nancy Knapp of Mason City;

JoAnn Simon of Las Vegas, Nev.; Cathryn Pinneke and her husband,

Albert, Fort Worth, Texas; William ``Bill'' Sharp of Canyon Country,

Calif.; Sally Matthes of Fort Worth, Texas; Shirley Walswick

and her husband, David, of Mason City, and David Sharp of Mason

City; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grand-

children;

one sister, Alice Mitchell of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Wilfred

Simmons of Stockton, Calif., and Robert Simmons of Kansas City,

Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson,

David Walswick; five brothers; and one sister in infancy.

Lois Beverly Miles

SPIRIT LAKE  



Lois Beverly Miles, 90, of Spirit Lake, died Friday (May 16,

1997) at the Hilltop Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United

Methodist Church, Spirit Lake, with the Rev. James Stiles officiating.

Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.



Visitiation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Turner

Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary service.



Lois Beverly Miles was born on June 17, 1906 in Goodell, the

daughter of Ora Gilbert and Andromeda Secor Miner.



Lois was united in marriage to Laurence Chapin Miles on Nov.

19, 1927, in Clear Lake.



The couple made their home in Clear Lake, Garner and Mason City,

before moving to Spirit Lake in 1952.



Mrs. Miles managed and cooked for the Spirit Lake School hot

lunch program for 10 years. She also  owned L & L Cafe in Spirit

Lake for six years and managed the restaurant at Templar Park

for six years.



Lois was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake.

She was also active in Tempe American Legion Auxiliary, Lakes

Garden Club, Senior Citizens and Dickinson County Memorial Hospital

Auxiliary. She was also one of the founders of the Spirit Lake

Farmers Market.



She enjoyed quilt making, sewing and playing cribbage.



Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Laurence C. Miles;

daughters, Barbara Hansen of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; Beverly

Van Legen, Rice Lake, Wis.; and Mary Jane Leon and her husband,

Ralph, of Palo Alto, Calif.; one brother, Gilbert Miner of Floyd;

11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grand-

children; and a host of friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Grace Baker,

Ethel Buss and Delle Miles; brothers, Parle and Ray Miner; and

a grandson, Lyle Hansen.

Adrian Fox

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn.  



The Rev. Adrian Fox O.S.B. died Monday (May 12, 1997) at St.

John's Abbey, Collegeville.



Robert Fox was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Mason City, Iowa, the son

of Llewellyn and Franziska (Godderz) Fox.



He was a member of the first kindergarten class at Jefferson

Elementary in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School

in 1932.



He began his studies at St. John's College in 1938. He was ordained

at St. John's on June 30, 1946, and said his first Mass at St.

Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City, Iowa, on July 4, 1946.

He received the name, Adrian.



Father Adrian O.S.B. was assigned to the school and monastery,

Colegio del Tepeyac, in Mexico City, Mexico. He also served in

a school and monastery, founded by St. John's in Puerto Rico.

He last served as chaplain at Saint Mary's Regional Health Center,

Detroit Lakes, Minn.



Father Adrian is survived by two brothers, Donald of Goulds,

Fla., and Dick of Mason City, Iowa.



Father Adrian was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters,

Mrs. Albert Cinkle (Bernice) and Mrs. Paul Poppen (Elizabeth);

and one brother, Kenneth.



The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Father Adrian

at Saint John's Abbey, Collegeville, on May 14 with burial in

the abbey cemetery.

Mandella Olive Huber

CLEAR LAKE  



Mandella Olive Huber, 85, of 19450 Fir Ave., died Sunday (May

18, 1997) at IOOF Home, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial

will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., where other arrangements

are incomplete.

Gordon E. Swenson

RAKE  



Gordon E. Swenson, 73, of Rake, died Sunday (May 18, 1997) at

the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zion

Lutheran Church, with Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial

will be in West Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral

Home, Buffalo Center, and one hour before services at the church.



Gordon E. Swenson was born June 8, 1923, on a farm just north

of Leland, son of Gilbert O. and Ellen (Charlson) Swenson. He

was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.



On Aug. 1, 1948, Gordon was united in marriage to Marlys Kallestad

at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson.



He farmed in Winnebago County until 1970 when he began his banking

career in Wisconsin. He purchased the State Savings Bank in Rake

in 1973, where he resided with his wife, Marlys, until his death.



His interests included many local and community affairs, an avid

interest in flying and loved his family deeply.



He served his country in the United States Army during World

War II.



He was appointed by Gov. Terry Branstad and served on the Iowa

Agricultural Development Authority.



Gordon is survived by his wife, Marlys of Rake; four children,

Georgia and her husband, Michael Sarno of West Des Moines; Michael

and his wife, Janet Swenson of Rake; Tamara and her husband,

Jon Jacobson of Rake, and Heidi Swenson-Linnan of Des Moines;

seven grandchildren, Christopher, Bradley and Laura Sarno, Katherine

and Thomas Swenson, Aaron Jacobson and Taylor Linnan; three sisters,

Rhoda and her husband, Chuck Brue of Lake Mills; Mildred and

her husband, Arnie Ottjes of Austin, Minn., and Marie and her

husband, Don Luff of Arcadia, Calif.; and two brothers, Oswald

and his wife, Amy, of Saratoga, Calif.; and Wallace and his wife,

Mary Swenson of Lake Mills.



Gordon was preceded in death by parents; an infant brother,

James Richard; and by a nephew, Mark Ottjes.

Marian R. Grimm

CLEAR LAKE 



Marian R. Caspersen Ashland Grimm, 69, 12913 Grouse Ave., died

Sunday (May 18, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East,

Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zion

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Kermit

Roisen officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel.



The family suggests memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church

and the Leukemia Society.



Marian was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Rockwell, the daughter of

Paul and Mary (O'Rourke) Caspersen.



She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1945.



On Jan. 25, 1949, she married Virgil Ashland. The couple farmed

until his death in 1977. She and Virgil had five children.



In 1967, Marian became a licensed cosmetologist. She operated

Marian's Beauty Shop for a number of years.



Her work experience also included working as an instructor at

Capri School of Cosmetology in Mason City, as well as working

with Ruth Toppin, and later with her daughter, Jane, at the Mane

Salon and Hair West, both in Clear Lake, until her retirement

in January of 1996.



In 1982, she and Jay Grimm were married and continued to reside

south of Clear Lake until her death following a brief illness.



She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.



She is survived by her husband, Jay Grimm of Clear Lake; five

children, Susan Hrubes and her husband, Marvin, of Woodbridge,

Va.; Jim Ashland; Tom Ashland and his wife, Georgia; Jane Ashland

Trayers and Tim Ashland and his special friend, Katie Donnelly,

all of Clear Lake; her father, Paul Caspersen of Rockwell; two

brothers, Louis Caspersen and his wife, Ceciela, of Houston,

Texas; and Leon Caspersen and his wife, Irene, of Clear Lake;

a sister, Phyllis Wickwire of Rockwell; three stepchildren, Lowell

Grimm and his wife, Carrie, of Lakeville, Minn.; Douglas Grimm

of Clear Lake, and Chris Grimm and his wife, Mary, of Bettendorf;

eight grandchildren, Matthew and Lisa Hrubes, Christopher and

Jeremy Ashland, Amber, Ashland, Leigh, Danielle and Ashley Trayers;

six stepgrandchildren, Tommy and Hannah Grimm, Delisha Ransom,

Desire'e Grimm and Christina and Katie Grimm.



She was preceded in death by her first husband, her mother and

a sister, Mercedes Doolan.

John `Ken' Holmlund

EDINA, Minn.  



John ``Ken'' Holmlund, 84, of Edina, and formerly of Mason

City, Iowa, died Thursday (March 20, 1997).



A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 25,

at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City,

Iowa.



Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 5000 West 50th St., Edina,

Minn., was in charge of arrangements.



He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Judy (Mrs.

Larry) Saathoff of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Jean Holmlund

of Minneapolis, Minn.; sisters, Hulda and Myrtle of Mason City,

Iowa; brother, William of Lake Mills, Iowa; seven grandchildren;

and two great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his son, Jack; and his brother,

Elmer.

Evelyn M. Pettigrew, 73, of Mason City, died Sunday (May 18,

1997) at the IOOF Home.

Wood officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral

home, and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Alice Frankl, 74, of Algona, died Monday (May 19, 1997) at the

Good Samaritan Center.

Home, with a 3 p.m. guild rosary, a 7:30 p.m. Scripture reading

and an 8 p.m. VFW Auxiliary service.

Lloyd W. Fiser, 69, of 2040 Greenfield Trailer Park, died Sunday

(May 18, 1997) at home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. A.C. Wegner

Jr. of Faith Bible Chapel officiating. Burial will be in Riverside

Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9

a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.



Lloyd William Fiser was born Feb. 3, 1928, in Charles City.



Survivors include one son, Ron Fiser of Charles City; one daughter,

Linda Schmitt of Rockford; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;

one brother, Floyd Fiser of Charles City; and two sisters, Donna

Debban of Waterloo, and Mary Paulus of Ardmore, Okla.



He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers

and two sisters.

Jesse J. Carroll

UPLAND, Calif.  



Jesse J. Carroll, 86, of Upland, died Saturday (May 17, 1997)

at Upland.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today  at the Church

of Our Heritage, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Covina.



Forest Lawn Mortuary, Covina, is in charge of arrangements.



Jesse J. Carroll was born April 13, 1911, in Sanborn, Iowa.



He was a fireman for the Mason City, Iowa, Fire Department for

28 years.



Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Carroll of Upland; daughter,

Nancy K. Utterback of West Covina; stepdaughter, Alice Scharlau

of Iowa; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren;

and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Ray M. Holub

MASON CITY  



Ray M. Holub, 80, of 115 S. Rhode Island Ave., died Sunday (March

23, 1997) at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.



The body was cremated. There will be no visitation.



A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's

Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries

officiating. Inurnment of his cremains and the cremains of his

wife, Catherine C. Holub, will follow at Elmwood-St.Joseph Cemetery.



In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mason City

Senior Citizens Center, in memory of Ray M. Holub.



Ray M. Holub was born June 2, 1916, in Preston, Minn., son of

Louis and Regina E. (Tupy) Holub.



He married Catherine C. Kohl on Sept. 12, 1939, in Clarion.

She preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 1997.



Ray grew up in Cresco and graduated from Cresco High School

in 1934.



He graduated from Hamilton's School of Commerce in 1936, and

also served in the Army during World War II.



Ray moved to Mason City in 1935. He managed United Fruit Store

for 12 years and was a salesman for Gamble-Robinson for 21 years

until retiring in 1980.



He enjoyed square dancing, camping and fishing, and he loved

wintering in Texas.



He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights

of Columbus, and an active member of Mason City Senior Citizens

Center.



Survivors include one son, Donald Holub and his wife, Judy,

of Copley, Ohio; one daughter, Julie Hickle and her husband,

Greg, Maple Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;

and one sister-in-law, Helen Kohl of Mason City.



He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Catherine.



Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge

of arrangements.

Fund.



Mandella was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Radcliffe, the daughter

of John and Ida (Anderson) Amundson.



 She moved with her family to Clear Lake in 1923. She graduated

from Clear Lake High School in 1929.



Mandella worked for several years for the Clear Lake Telephone

Company as a switchboard operator.



Mandella married Paul Johannessen in 1934 and he preceded her

in death in 1945.



She married Albert Huber in 1947.



Mandella enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, playing cards and

ballroom dancing. She was noted for her great cooking, and making

pies as she operated the restaurant in the sale barn in Clear

Lake.



She especially enjoyed being around her family.



Mandella was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake; Rebekah

Lodge 105 and Do Your Bit Club.



Mandella is survived by three sons, Robert Johannessen and his

wife, Bonnie, Park Rapids, Minn.; Allen Johannessen and his wife,

Janet, Montrose, Colo.; and Eugene Huber and his wife, Nancy,

of Clear Lake. grandmother of 15; and great-grandmother of 15;

also survived by several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two

sisters and six brothers.

Neal A. Hage

CHARLES CITY  



Neal A. Hage, 32, Spur, Texas, formerly of Charles City, died

Friday (May 16, 1997) at the University Hospitals, Lubbock, Texas.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.

John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert Streets, Charles

City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Karen Rask

Behling officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the family receiving friends

from 5 to 6 p.m.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider

memorials to the Neal Hage Memorial Fund.



Neal Hage was born Jan. 2, 1955, in Iowa City, and was the son

of Almer ``Bud'' and Shirley Ann Smith Hage.



Neal was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran

Church in Charles City. He attended Charles City Schools.



He was united in marriage to Tina Rae Auge on Aug. 30, 1986,

in Tulsa, Okla. They lived in Oklahoma, then he studied nursing

in Colorado.



They moved to California for a year where he was employed as

a courier.



After moving to Montana, he studied in the medical field at

the Bryan Institute. During this time, he recorded books on tape

for the blind and tutored others.



He received his Associate of Science in Human Services from

the College of Great Falls in December of 1993 and graduated

Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology

and a minor in Criminal Justice from the University of Great

Falls, Great Falls, Mont.



He was working as a Counselor/Psychological Technician at the

Montana State Prison and the Dickens County Correctional Center.



He was a member of the Professional Counselors Association,

and the American Psychology Source Association.



Neal enjoyed playing football, water skiing and swimming.



During high school, he enjoyed participating at the Charles

City YMCA. Neal's favorite pastime was playing the guitar and

bass; he also sang in the choir at church and school.



Living family members include his wife, Tina; one daughter,

Regan; and one son, Sayer, all of Texas; his mother, Shirley

and her husband, Virgil Jacobson, of Charles City; his paternal

grandmother, Anna Hage, of Jewell; numerous aunts and uncles

including Dr. M.L. Hodson and his wife, Pat, of Belleair, Fla.;

Mrs. Arlene Smith of Hopkinton; Frank and Charlotte Silkebaken

of Belle Plaine; Robert L. Johnson of Coronado, Calif.; Mrs.

Mary Ann Van Langen of Longmont, Colo.; his mother and father-in-law,

Rod and Marlow Dawson of Cedar Falls; and three brothers-in-law,

Tony Auge, Tyler Green and Cameron Green.



He was preceded in death by his father, Almer ``Bud'' Hage.

Viola Maude Dempsey

BELMOND  



Viola Maude Dempsey, 96, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (May

20, 1997) at the Belmond Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.

Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with Father John Paisley officiating.

Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.



Friends and relatives are invited to lunch at the church following

graveside services.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Dugger

Ewing Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m.

Scriptural wake service. There will be additional visitation

one hour prior to church services on Thursday morning.



Viola, the daughter of Truair N. and Hannah A. Temby Davenport,

was born July 12, 1900, in Belmond.



She attended school in Belmond. Viola then worked in a milliner

shop for a time.



On June 5, 1920, she was united in marriage to William Dempsey

in Waverly.



The couple made their home in Belmond, where they started their

family.



They then moved to Goodell where they owned and operated Dempsey's

Cafe. Working side by side, they built a very successful restaurant

business.



After operating the restaurant for many years, the couple lived

in Minnesota for a short time before returning to Belmond.



Viola then worked at the Belmond Community School as a hot lunch

cook for several years.



Bill and Viola were ``Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus'' to the community

children for many years.



A few years ago, William passed away and Viola moved to the

Belmond Community Apartments  living in the Rice Apartments.

She then entered the Belmond Health Care Center in February of

1988, where she enjoyed living until her final day.



Viola was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church,

the Rosary Society and was a life time member of the Legion Auxiliary.

She was also a member of the Little Red School House.



She liked to pass her time doing handiwork  crocheting, knitting

and tatting.



She also enjoyed reading and visiting with her many friends.



Viola is remembered as a very caring individual, an exemplary

role model, a terrific mother and grandmother.



Viola is survived by her children, Robert and his wife, Anne,

of Purcell, Okla.; Paul and his wife, Patricia, of Mason City;

Donna Buckley and her husband, Maurice, of Ventura; and Betty

Byrnes and her husband, Donald, of San Diego, Calif.; 23 grandchildren;

and 36 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister,

Alice Hedges; one brother, Ernest Davenport; one grandchild;

and two great-grandchildren.

Gene Groh

POWAY, Calif.  



Gene Groh, 60, of Poway, passed away Wednesday evening (Feb.

12, 1997) of a massive heart attack at his home.



Services were held on Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Faith United

Church, Gibbon, Neb., with the Rev. Russell Terman officiating.

Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Gibbon, Neb.



Godberson Mortuary, Gibbon, Neb., was in charge of arrangements.



Gene Groh was born Nov. 11, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa, to August

Groh Sr. and Florence Groh, one of 14 children.



Gene spent four years in the United States Air Force as an Air

Traffic Controller.



At the time of his death, he was a board member and chairman

of the Governmental Relations Committee of Poway.



Gene was a leader in the community. In 1979, he moved to Poway,

and started Cloud ``9'' Interiors, which he operated until his

death.



He was a 10-year member of the Rotary Club of Poway and had

served as club service director for two years, treasurer for

three years and club president 1995-96.



Gene joined the Poway Chamber of Commerce in March of 1983 and

had been an important part of the business community ever since.

He was elected to the Poway Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

July 1, 1996, and was serving a three year term at the time of

his death.



A gathering was held on Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at the Poway-Bernardo

Mortuary reflecting low-key, often humorous remembrances. It

was said by a friend that Gene did for others without strings

attached; from donating window coverings for the Soroptimists'

transition house for victims of family violence to helping the

Weingart Center in Poway, or working on the upcoming gala for

the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve  he did what he did best  gave

to others.



A sister described her brother as ``a benchmark we all tried

to measure up to.'' Another sister thought of her brother as

someone who was always watching out for her, and she added, ``maybe

he still is.'' 



He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity of the University

of Missouri.



His hobbies included flying, golf, scuba diving and travel.



The family has suggested that memorial contributions may be

given to Rotary Club of Poway, P.O. Box 184, Poway, Calif. 92074-0184.



Groh is survived by his wife, Beverly ``Petie'' Cox; three brothers,

August Groh Jr. and his wife, Arlene, of Frisco, Texas; Richard

Groh and his wife, Marti, of Thermopolis, Wyo.; and Dennis Groh

Evelyn M. Pettigrew was born April 5, 1924, at LuVerne, the

daughter of Edward and Anna (Voss) Pergande.



Evelyn enjoyed crocheting, baking sugar cookies and playing

with her grandchildren and gardening.



She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City.



Evelyn was a wonderful mother and grandmother, deeply loved

by her family.



She was a dear friend to many, always ready to help others

and give of herself.  



She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.



Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Vine and her fiance,

Ronald White, of Mason City; Juanita Laskowski and her husband,

James, of Princeton, Minn.; one son, Paul Pettigrew and his wife,

Janice, of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; one sister, Elizabeth Lund and

her husband, Gordon, of Vincent; five grandchildren, Brian Vine;

The family of Hazel Mae McKinley has requested that memorial

Hazel Mae McKinley was born on May 11, 1920, in the Northwest

Territory in Canada, the daughter of Pearl and Mary Maude (McCarty)

Burgher.



She attended and received her education in the Maloy school

system, graduating from high school. She also received her teachers

certificate from the Maryville, Mo., teachers college.



After completing her education, she taught in rural country

schools in southern Iowa.



She was united in marriage to Maurice Gail Toyne on July 23,

1941. He preceded her in death in 1961.



She was united in marriage to Clarence McKinley on Nov. 7, 1964.

He preceded her in death on May 20, 1986.



Throughout her life, she did volunteer work for the Jefferson

Hospital and other organizations.



She enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds, nature, sewing and quilting,

but her great love was being a devoted Christian who was faithful

to her church and to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.



Hazel was a courageous survivor of cancer who lived to love

and care for her family.



She was a member of the Agape Christian Family Church in Clear

Lake, a former member of the Assembly of God Church in Hampton,

and was a former member of the Abundant Life Ministries Church

in Jefferson.



Left to cherish her memory are three sons, Daniel Duane Toyne

and his wife, Lindy, of Reelsville, Ind.; the Rev. Dennis Lee

Toyne and his wife, Sandy, of Green Bay, Wis.; and the Rev. David

Lyle Toyne and his wife, Kristine, of Clear Lake; three daughters,

Carol Ann Anderson and her husband, Bernard, of Broken Arrow,

Okla.; Darlene May Toyne of Mason City; and Kyla Jones and her

husband, James Robert, of Norwalk; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grand-

children;

one sister, Doris Drake of Mt. Ayr; and one brother, Bill Burgher

and his wife, Delores, of Blairsburg, Neb.; as well as other

relatives and friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one

Gordon served his country during World War II in the United

States Army as an aviation engineer.



Gordon was married to Alvina Kemna on Jan. 15, 1947, at Bancroft.



They have lived most of their married life in Bancroft where

Gordy worked for 37 years as a mechanic for Deitering Implement.

He retired in 1986.



Gordy is survived by his wife, Alvina, of Bancroft; children,

Leo Delperdang of Manchester; Ralph Delperdang and his wife,

Janet, of Burnsville, Minn.; David Delperdang and his wife, Judy,

of Clear Lake; Susan Johnson of Fullerton, Calif.; and Alan Delperdang

Sr. She was educated in the Whittemore area.



On Oct. 2, 1917, she was united in marriage to Peter Weydert

in Whittemore.



The couple farmed at Bode until 1920. Later that year they moved

to Riceland, Minn.



They returned to Iowa in 1928 and farmed south of Whittemore.



In 1928, they purchased a farm south of Ventura and farmed there

until 1961. She then retired to her present Clear Lake address.



She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake

for 54 years and served in St. Ann's Circle.



She was a charter member of the Union Dozen Club of Ventura.



Justine is survived by six children, Marvin Weydert of Mason

City; Pauline Weydert Quinn and her husband, Lester, of Brandon,

Minn.; Grace Jones and her husband, Joseph, of Thornton; Simon

Weydert and his wife, Phyllis, of Rockwell; Barbara Ann Weydert

Chisholm of Osage; and Jackie Weydert Quinn and her husband,

Bud, of Ventura; 30 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; and

22 great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two granddaughters,

Suzanne and Peggy Ann Jones; a daughter-in-law, Anna Mae Weydert;

Mr. Beard was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Nora Springs, Iowa, the

son of Walter and Bessie Mains Beard.



He married Evelyn Day on April 12, 1936, in Mason City, Iowa.



He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps During World War II, and

then served in the United States Air Force Reserves, retiring

as major in 1975.



Following the war, he worked as a flying instructor for four

years, and then served as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal

Aviation Administration for 18 years.



He was Air Traffic Controller at the Quad City Airport from

when they opened the control tower in 1954 until his retirement

in 1969. Following his retirement, he owned Electronic Recovery,

selling metal detectors out of his home.



He was a member of the Iowa-Illinois Treasure Hunters Club,

American Legion Post #246, Moline; Silent Wings Glider Pilots

Association, Isaak Walton League, Giant Goose Conservation Club

and Moline Conservation Club. He enjoyed photography.



He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; a son and daughter-in-law,

Ed and Jean Beard of Coal Valley; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grand-

children; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and J.C. Merryman of

Waterloo, Iowa; a brother, Foster Beard, of Nora Springs, Iowa;

and a sister-in-law, Mary Beard, of Floyd, Iowa.



He was preceded in death by a daughter, Waltressa Krick; and

United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Buckeye

Cemetery, Buckeye.

Henry was born on Aug. 21, 1926, at Alden.



Survivors include four children, Linda Rollins of Stevens Point,

Wis.; Allen Powgnas of Woolstock; Patty Johnson of Webster City,

and Mary Lou Hilpipre of Plainfield, Wis.; six grandchildren;

two stepgrandchildren; one sister, Kathyn Baker of Ames; one

brother, Leo Powgnas of Duncombe; and a stepbrother, David Bahr

of Derby, Kan.

will be in  St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Bancroft.

Mildred Blocker was born Feb. 14, 1914, in Bancroft.



Survivors include two sons, Donald Blocker of Forest City, and

William Blocker of Prior Lake, Minn.; one grandchild; one sister,

Amy Jean Graham of Titonka; and one brother, Verdon Farrow of

Buffalo Center.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son,

three brothers and three sisters.

Daisy Belle Waterstradt

MASON CITY 



Daisy Belle Waterstradt, 87, of 907 N. Washington Ave., died

Wednesday (May 21, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E.,

with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating. Burial will be

in the Alden Cemetery, Alden.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to

services on Saturday at the church.



Memorials may be given to the Easter Seal Society or First Congregational

United Church of Christ.



Daisy Belle Waterstradt was born Nov. 9, 1909, in Hardin County,

the daughter of William G. and Fredireka (Grupe) Orpin.



Daisy attended and graduated from Iowa Falls High School in

1925 and from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1929.



Daisy lived in Hardin County for 15 years and Cedar Falls for

four years.



She then taught school in West Union for 10 years and for two

years in Iowa Falls.



Daisy married Frank C. Waterstradt on June 22, 1944, in Austin,

Minn., and in that same year moved to Mason City.



She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ

and where she served as past president of the Women's Fellowship,

Executive Club, PEO Chapter GN and the Sorosis Club where she

served as past presidents.



Daisy enjoyed playing bridge and in 1929 she was on the WMT

Radio broadcast ``Lowry Economy Hour'' as Mary Marshall.



She is survived by three nieces, Marlys Blakely and her husband,

Gordon, of Sherburn, Minn.; Clarissa Oertli and her husband,

Bernard, of Adrian, Minn., and Claudia Riley of New Brighton,

Minn.; one nephew, Larry Raddle and his wife, Barbara, of Rock

Rapids; several great nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces

and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, in

1970; daughter, Judy Kay in 1984; and two sisters, Thelma Raddle

and  Letha Bateman.

Otto George Schlobohm

ROCK FALLS 



Otto George Schlobohm, 95, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., Mason

City, formerly of Rock Falls, died Thursday (May 22, 1997) at

the Nora Springs Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eden Presbyterian

Church, rural Rudd, with the Rev. John Bates officiating. Burial

will be in Rock Falls Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial

Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St., Nora Springs, and will continue one

hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.



Otto George Schlobohm was born March 23, 1902, in Rock Falls,

son of William August and Margaret (Buckman) Schlobohm.



He married Mary A. Marston on Jan. 10, 1931, in South Dakota.



Otto was raised east of Rock Falls and attended Rock Falls Schools.



He farmed in the area until 1940, when he moved into Rock Falls

and owned and operated the DX Service Station for 50 years. He

also worked the ``sugar beet run'' at the Crystal Sugar Beet

Plant north of Mason City for several years.



Through his efforts, the ``falls''  on the Shell Rock River

at Rock Falls were reconstructed in 1969. He assisted in the

construction of the Covered Bridge at Wilkinson Park. Otto was

the first Rock Falls school bus driver.



Otto was a member of Rudd Eden Presbyterian Church where he

had served as deacon. He was also a member of the Kinney Pioneer

Museum, Mason City, and he served on the Rock Falls City Council

for approximately 15 years.



Survivors include his wife, Mary Schlobohm of Mason City; four

sons, the Rev. William Schlobohm and his wife, Naomi, of Coal

Valley, Ill.; Dr. Richard Schlobohm and his wife, Phyllis, of

Mill Valley, Calif.; James Schlobohm and his wife, Sally, of

South Bend, Ind.; and John Schlobohm and his wife, Patricia,

of Clear Lake; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two

sisters, Grace Schlobohm of Nora Springs, and Leona Phillip of

Osage; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John

Wohlers and Alvin Schlobohm; and one sister, Molly Brandau.

Grace Wenzel

ALEXANDER  



Grace (Dirksen) Wenzel, 93, of Alexander, died Wednesday (May

21, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

First Reformed Church,  with the Rev. Gerald Norman officiating.

Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Tenold

Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the

church on Saturday.



Grace (Dirksen) Wenzel, daughter of Klass and Grace (Suntken)

Dirksen, was born Sept. 1, 1903, at home in Franklin County.



When her father passed away on July 27, 1904, Grace and her

mother moved to the farm of her grandparents northeast of Alexander.

They lived there for the next 15 years. Then they moved to a

house in Alexander east of the hatchery.



Grace attended schools in the Alexander area. Grace helped her

mother with all the work and gardening until she got married.



She was united in marriage to Fred J. Wenzel on Feb. 25, 1927,

at the Alexander Church Parsonage. They farmed northwest of Alexander

until retirement in 1960.



Grace was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church of

Alexander and was one of the first to be baptized in that church.



Grace and Fred were custodians for the church approximately

20 years. They also had a large garden and many flowers which

they both enjoyed.



She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Tabbert of Osage;

Mary Servantez and her husband, Tony, of Mason City; Mrs. Lily

Dippel of Belmond; Gladys Vancura and her husband, Chuck, of

Lakefield, Minn.; and Phyllis Ash and her husband, Don, of Grundy

Center; sons, Fred Jr. and his wife, MaeFerne, of Belmond; George

and his wife, Mildred, of Belmond; James and his wife, Joyce,

of Alexander; and Robert and his wife, Carolyn, of Alexander;

41 grandchildren; and 70 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred; son-in-law,

Eldrede Tabbert; daughter-in-law, Betty Wenzel; two grandsons,

Merlin Wenzel and Dylan Dippel; granddaughter, Dianne Tabbert;

and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Eugene Morrow

NORTHWOOD  



Kenneth Eugene Morrow, 49, of 203 S. 14th St., died unexpectedly

Tuesday (May 20, 1997) in Northwood.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Michaelson

Funeral Home, 303 S. Cedar Ave., Owatonna, Minn., with the Rev.

Mary Parker officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial

Gardens, with full military honors.



Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the

Michaelson Funeral Home, Owatonna.



Memorials may be given to the donor's choice in his memory.



Ken was born July 16, 1947, in Owatonna, Minn., the son of George

Morrow and LaVera (Wolf) Morrow. He attended Medford, Minn.,

schools.



Mr. Morrow served in the United States Army during the Vietnam

War, serving three tenures, two in Vietnam and one in Korea.

He was discharged on Feb. 24, 1971, as a Specialist #5. He received

a Purple Heart for his duty.



Ken was a longtime truck driver for various companies throughout

the area. Most recently, he had been working for Perkins Transportation

out of Farmington, Minn,. hauling over dimensional equipment

and materials.



Mr. Morrow was a member of the Prior Lake VFW Post #6208.



He was a collector and he especially enjoyed collecting model

cars, western and wildlife art and Snap-On Tools.



He also enjoyed playing golf and was an excellent cook. In earlier

years, he had enjoyed raising horses. In addition to driving

truck, he also spent time repairing trucks and metalworking.



Mr. Morrow is survived by his mother, LaVera Morrow of Faribault,

Minn.; two sisters, Jo Ann and her husband, Richard Cain, of

Medford, Minn., and Helen and her husband, Pat Hurley, of Walnut

Creek, Calif.; a nephew, John and his wife, Vickie Nowak; and

their son, Jeremiah of Medford, Minn.; three nieces, Jean Nowak

of La Crosse, Wis.; Julie and her husband, Bruce Kenitzer of

Wright, Wyo.; and Jody Cain, of Gaylesville, Wis.

Emery Link, 84, of Casper, died Friday (May 23, 1997) at Life

Care, Casper.

be in Highland Cemetery.

Emery Link was born June 1, 1912, Green City, Mo., the son of

Conrad R. and Zada E. (Sears) Link.



He was united in marriage to Merry Mondt on June 10, 1934, at

Garden Prairie Church, Madrid, Iowa.



He attended the Assembly of God Bible School in Springfield,

Mo.



He was pastor of a church in Casper and was a traveling evangelist

for many years.



He ministered with the Crow Indians at the Crow Agency in Montana

and with the Arapahoes and Shoshones at the Wind River Reservation

at Ethete, Wyo.



He was a very avid hunter.



Survivors include his wife, Merry of Casper; daughters, Jacqueline

Darnall of Glenrock; Ramona Ratterree of Casper, and Yvonne Hubbell

of Palm Dale, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren;

and two sisters, Mildred Madson and Maxine Dorr, both of Mason

City, Iowa.



He was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and one

granddaughter, Darla Darnall Luft.

Harold V. ``Bud'' Quinley Jr., 69, a graduate of Mason City,

Iowa, High School in 1946 and a life-long Mohawk, passed away

Ruth A. Schubert, 82, of Garner, died Thursday (May 22, 1997)

at her home in Garner.

Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake.

Ruth Anita Catherine Schubert, the daughter of Edmund and Emily

(Mortenson) Sorenson, was born Dec. 24, 1914, on a farm southwest

of Crystal Lake.



She graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1933.



Ruth helped raise her brothers after her mother's death in 1926.



On April 16, 1941, she was married to Herbert Wilhelm Heinrich

Schubert at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake.



They lived in Britt until 1942, when Herb entered the U.S. military

service.



Ruth moved to Crystal Lake to live with her brother, Russell,

until the end of World War II.



Upon Herb's return from the service, they moved to Garner in

the fall of 1946, where they made their permanent home.



Ruth was a dining room hostess and cook at Prairie View Apartments

in Garner for 11 years. She also cleaned homes in Garner for

many years.



She enjoyed housekeeping, cooking, entertaining guests and especially

raising roses.



Ruth was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L. and

Ruth Circle and was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout assistant

leader.



She is survived by her husband, Herbert Schubert of Garner;

her three children, Roland Shubert and his wife, Pam, of St.

Ansgar; Althea Bussert and her husband, James, of Mesa, Ariz.;

and Mark Schubert of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren, Del Schubert

of Minneapolis, Minn.; Sana Schubert of Minneapolis, Minn.; Shelli

Schubert of Toledo; David Schubert and his wife, Helen, of Story

City and their children, Abby and Garret and Kaila Bussert of

Tucson, Ariz.; her stepmother, Mildred Sorenson of Crystal Lake;

four brothers, Harlan Sorenson and his wife, Jerry, of Crystal

Lake; Russell Sorenson and his wife, Marjorie, of Crystal Lake;

Morris Sorenson and his wife, Wilma, of Winthrop, Mass., and

Kenneth Sorenson and his wife, Leona, of Crystal Lake; five sisters,
