Gertrude Alice Eggers
BELMOND
Gertrude Alice Eggers, 91, of Mason City, died Tuesday (April
29, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Tenold
Funeral Home Chapel, Belmond, with the Rev. Jerry Robertson officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.
Gertrude Alice Eggers was born Feb. 13, 1906, in Marshalltown.
Survivors include one son, Lon D. Eggers of Sparta, Wis.; one
daughter, Shirley Bloom of Mason City; one brother, Lloyd Wagoner
of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; four sisters, Treva Jones of Belmond,
Dorothy Schroeder of Clarion, Ruby Klinefelter of Belmond, and
Patty Blau of Latimer; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three
brothers and one grandchild.

Dale Lahner
SHEFFIELD
Dale Lahner, 70, of Sheffield, died Tuesday (April 29, 1997)
at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dana Halstead and Pastor Steve
Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral
Home.
Dale P. Lahner was born on Dec. 14, 1926, in New Hampton. His
proud parents, Alva Lahner and Fern (Bullis) Lahner Rodruck raised
their family in Arlington and Oelwein.
Dale was a graduate of Clarksville High School in 1945.
Upon graduation, Dale enlisted in the United States Army and
took boot camp training in Fort Hood, Texas. He was shipped to
Germany before the end of World War II. His uncommon sense of
duty and ethics assured his appointment as a guard inside the
courtroom of the Nuremburg Trials.
He was united in marriage to Luella Marie Siems on Jan. 11,
1948.
They made their home in Sheffield where he owned and operated
Sheffield Electric for approximately 50 years.
Other contributions include eight years on the Sheffield City Council,
over 40 years on the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department, delivering
Meals on Wheels, and coaching literally hundreds of young boys,
including his sons, on Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams.
His standard gesture after each game was ``Popcorn and Orange
Crush for all the boys, I'll Buy.''
Dale also donated the Sharing Shoppe to the town of Sheffield.
His favorite family activities were the annual vacation to Mayflower
Lodge in Deer River, Minn., trips to the Mississippi River and
Father's Day picnics at their farm.
Dale leaves behind his loving wife, Lu of Sheffield; children,
Susan Harris and her husband, Michael, of Sheffield; Stephen
Lahner and his wife, Luanna, of Clear Lake; David Lahner and
his wife, Nancy, of Boone; Jeannie Brandt and her husband, Mark,
of Dallas Center; Mary Kranz and her husband, Michael, of Klemme;
Bill Lahner and his wife, Annette, of Sheffield; Anne Foster
and her husband, David, of Belmond, and Peter Lahner of Shawnee,
Kan.; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother,
Fern Rodruck of Sheffield; two sisters, Eva Roberts and her husband,
Richard, of Garfield, Minn., and Edith Kammrad and her husband,
George, of Omaha, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and stepfather.

Jane M. Helland, 83, of 122 15th St. N.W., died Sunday (April
27, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Family
Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. John R. Kremer
officiating. Following services, ther body will be cremated.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer

Jane M. Helland was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Superior, Wis., daughter
of Barney and Jenny McCabe.
She married Phillip H. Helland on July 22, 1939.
Jane attended school in Superior, Wis. She enjoyed cooking and
playing 500. She was an active member of Holy Family Catholic
Church.
She was greatly loved and will be missed by her family and many
friends.
Survivors include one daughter, Marva Biddick and her husband,
Steve, Mason City; three sons, Phillip P. Helland of Mason City;
Frank Helland and his wife, Betty, of Spencer, and Daniel Helland
of Mason City; six grandchildren, Shane Biddick and Aaron Biddick,
both of Mason City; Jesslyn Janes and her husband, Chad, of Mason
City; Jennifer Helland of California; Justin Helland of Mason
City, and Becky Buhrman of Spencer; seven great-grandchildren;
one brother, Tommy Gunnum; two sisters, Dolly Nault and Marjorie
Dofure, both of Superior, Wis.; several nieces and nephews; and
special friends of the family, Nancy and Wayne Scott and Amy
and John, all of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson,
Jim Meyers; one brother, Lawrence Gunnum; and one sister, Esther
Salmen.

Donald Luverne Bell, 65, of Thompson, died Monday (April 28,
1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Donald Luverne Bell was born Oct. 6, 1931, on a farm southwest
of Thompson.
Survivors include his wife, Almira of Thompson; two sons, Steve
of Crystal Lake, and Daniel of Lake Mills; one daughter, Donalle
Rodas of Spencer; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two
sisters, Opal DeVries of Buffalo Center, and Marjorie Sorenson
of Crystal Lake; and stepmother, Isabell Bell of Leland.

Alice Paschka, 58, of Plymouth, died Feb. 10, 1986, in Worth
County.

Alice was born on Feb. 12, 1927, in Dunell, Minn., the daughter
of Albert and Helen (Aggie) Sazma.
She received her education in Mason City and was a graduate
of the Mason City High School.
Following school, she worked for the Bell Telephone Company
for 12 years.
She was united in marriage to Merlyn Pashka on Aug. 21, 1951,
in Mason City.
While Merlyn was in the Navy, they spent most of their time
in California where she worked for a school in San Diego.
They moved to Plymouth in 1975 and spent the rest of her life
there.
She enjoyed embroidery work, her half acre vegetable garden,
was a marvelous cook and especially enjoyed spending time with
her grandchildren and visiting with friends.
Alice is survived by her husband, Merlyn, Mason City; two daughters,
Carolyn and her husband, David Buonauro, Eau Claire, Wis., and
Barbara and her husband, Armond Scharper, Plymouth; one son,
Gerald Paschka of Nevada; six grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret
Stewart of San Diego, Calif., and Gladys Miller of Rock Ledge,
Fla.; one brother, Dean and his wife, Hazel Sazma, of Orofino,
Idaho; a special cousin and friend, Lucille Vestal of Mason City;
and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Donald was born Sept. 5, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Isaac
and Lola (Sanders) Walls.
He had lived in the Clear Lake area most of his life other than
the time he served in the United States Army during World War
II.
Donald married Marjorie Matzen Oct. 9, 1943, in the Christian
Church Parsonage in Mason City.
They lived on the farm south of Clear Lake until January of
1994 when they moved into their present home in Clear Lake.
He enjoyed going out to the farm and helping his son with the
farm.
Donald enjoyed watching his grandchildren by going to all sports
events and as well as fishing, dancing, traveling and going to
movies.
Donald was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear
Lake, and served on the church board for two years. He was a
board member of the Burchinal Co-op 12 years and was president
for three years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Gallagher
Post #208 VFW, Rockwell.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marjorie Walls of Clear Lake;
two children, Richard Walls and his wife, Jane, of Clear Lake,
and Cindy Washburn and her husband, Sterling, of Clear Lake;
five grandchildren, Elizabeth Walls, Austin, Minn.; Kathleen
Walls, West Point, N.Y.; Jennifer Washburn, Cedar Falls; Justin
and Melissa Washburn, both of Clear Lake; one sister, Cecil Broers,
IOOF Home, Mason City; and one brother, Leonard Walls and his
wife, Pauline, of Rockford, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Dixie
Walls, who died at the age of 2 in 1952; and three brothers,
Howard, Russell and Ralph Walls.

Maynard Wesley Azeltine

Maynard Wesley Azeltine, 80, of Rowan, died Thursday (May 1,
1997) at Clarion Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United
Church of Rowan, with Pastor JoAn Lent Skyrme officiating. Burial
will be in Graceland Cemetery, with graveside services by the
Andrew Whitten American Legion Post #159 of Rowan.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold
Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at the
church.

Maynard Wesley Azeltine, the son of John W. and Ellen (Whitten)
Azeltine, was born Sept. 29, 1916, at Rowan.
He graduated in 1934 from Rowan High School.
On Jan. 22, 1939, he was united in marriage to Ardelle M. Cooper
at Mason City, and three daughters were born to this union.
He entered the United States Army during World War II and was
discharged in 1946.
After residing in Sheffield and Whittemore, Maynard and Ardelle
moved to Rowan in 1946 to operate the Azeltine Food Market. In
later years, Maynard was employed as a rural mail carrier, retiring
in 1981.
Maynard was an active member of the United Church of Rowan,
Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club and American Legion.
He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his children and
his grandchildren.
He is survived by daughters, Karen Cunningham and husband, Marlan,
of Ankeny; Deanna Ware and husband, Ed, of Muscatine; and Mary
Jo Roberts of Coralville; grandchildren, Laurie and David Moore
of Ankeny; David and Lisa Cunningham of Indianapolis, Ind.; Susan
and Matthew Terrill of Muscatine; Andrea and Tim Albers of Indianapolis,
Ind.; Kimberly and Kristin Roberts of Coralville; great-grandchildren,
Matthew, Christopher, Andrew, Emily, Margaret and Elizabeth;
and a sister, Louise Greenfield of Rowan.

Duane ``Hans'' Springer, 71, died Friday (May 2, 1997) at North

Duane ``Hans'' Springer was born on Jan. 16, 1926, in Franklin
County, the son of Ralph and Esther ``Grabbe'' Springer. He
attended country schools in the Sheffield and Thornton area.
In 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country until
1946 when he returned home to join his father and brother in
their farming operation. On July 8, 1947, he was united in marriage
to Rose DeVries in Clear Lake. They made their home farming
north of Thornton. In 1969 he began working for the Thornton
Coop until retiring in 1988.
Hans enjoyed fishing and playing cards in his spare time. He
was a member of the Thornton American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Thornton; two daughters,
Jan Dorenkamp and her husband Dave of Thornton, and Deb Lerdal
and her husband Terry of Thornton; two sons, Ron and his wife
Sharon of Garner, and Dennis and his wife Sharon of Clear Lake;
three grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and five step-
great-grandchildren; and his mother, Esther of Sheffield.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and one
step-grandson.

Gloria Mae Griffith

Gloria Mae Griffith, 59, died Friday (May 2, 1997) at her home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke
Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street with the Rev. Robert
Snitzer of the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church rural Forest City officiating.
Burial will be in the Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today and one hour
prior to service time on Monday at the chapel.
Gloria Mae Griffith was born on Feb. 27, 1938 in Forest City
the daughter of Alvin and Idamae (Elias) Swanson. She attended
and received her education in the Forest City School System,
graduating from Forest City High School in 1955. She also attended
Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She was united in marriage
to Thomas Griffith on Oct. 27, 1967 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He
preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1990. Throughout her life she
worked as a waitress for various establishments throughout the
United States. She also owned and operated the Clear Lake Bingo.
She enjoyed Bingo, but her great love and enjoyment was her
family and grandchildren and visiting with her family and many
friends.
She was a member of the Clear Lake VFW Ladies Auxiliary and
the Moose Lodge in Webster City.
Survivors include on son, Kerry Griffith and his wife Melody
and their children, Matthew, Thomas and Stephen; one daughter,
Crystal Griffith of Clear Lake and her children Michael and Jordan;
three brothers, Larry Swanson and his wife Vi of Sheffield, Dean
Swanson and his wife Francis of Williams and Gerald Swanson of
Charlott, as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Idamae (Elias)
Swanson and her husband Thomas Griffith.

Joseph P. Ebeling
MASON CITY
Joseph P. Ebeling, 82, of 323 Eighth Street S.E., died Friday
(May 2, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, following a

Joseph Peter Ebeling was born July 28, 1914, in Mason City,
the son of Peter and Philomena (Pievowar) Ebeling. He graduated
from the former St. Joseph's high School in 1932. Following
his education, he began to work for the former J.P. Decker's
Meat Packing Company. At the beginning of World War II, his
number was one of the first one's drawn from Decker's to enlist
in the military. Mr. Ebeling served with the 706th Ordinance,
Sixth Infantry Division of Quartermasters of the United States
Army. He was stationed in the South Pacific serving in New Guinea
and the Phillipines, and was instrumental in repairing automotive
and firearm equipment. One April 28, 1942, while he was on furlough,
he was united in marriage to Margaret Louis Warrington at the
old Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. The couple made
their home in Mason City following his discharge from the Army.
Mr. Ebeling continued his career with Deckers. He rose to the
position of foreman in the sausage department, even after the
plant was sold to the Armour Meat Packing Company. He was with
the company for 40 years total, retiring when the plant closed
in 1975.
Mr. Ebeling was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. he
was a fifty year member of the American Legion Post in Mason
City. Joe loved hunting and fishing. He was duck hunting even
as late as last year. He enjoyed tending to his rose garden,
and loved the time he spent with his family at their cottage
on Clear Lake.
Living family members include his wife, Margaret of Mason City;
a daughter and her husband, Jody and Dean Yezek of rural Plymouth;
a son and his wife, James and Cindy Ebeling of Mason City; a
brother and his wife, Leo and Lucille Ebeling of Mason City;
a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Ebeling of Clear Lake; three grandsons,
Jeffrey Ebeling and wife Melanie, Peter Yezek and Michael Yezek;
two great-grandsons, Drake Allan Ebeling and Evan Michael Ebeling,
as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two
brothers, Henry and Fred Ebeling, and a granddaughter, Kelly
Jo Ebeling.

Mrs. Elizabeth George
FOREST CITY
Mrs. Elizabeth George, 88, died Friday (May 2, 1997) at her
home in Forest City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James
Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry Kopacek of St. Mary's Catholic
Church in Marshalltown officiating. Burial will be in St. James
Catholic Cemetery, Forest City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday with a scripture
service at 7 p.m. all at Petersen Lund Funeral Home.
Elizabeth M. George was born in Wright County, on March 16,
1909, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Russell. she graduated
form Clarion High School and attended Ellsworth Teachers College.
She taught in the Wright County rural schools for 13 years and
two years at Clarion Elementary schools.
She worked as a teletype operator for four years and as a medical
receptionist for Dr. Bruce in Fort Dodge for two years. She
was married to Carroll George on Feb. 12, 1954. Mrs. George was
a past president of the Forest City Woman's Club and a long
time member of the Forest City Hospital Auxiliary. She was
a member of St. James Catholic Church and served on various committees
of leadership.
She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Gary and Gloria
George of North wood, and Eugene and Leanne George of Lakewood,
Calif; six grandchildren, Michael, Dennis, and Lisa George and
Tammy Hain, Theresa and Daniel George; three great-grandchildren,
Dana and Hanna George and Brooke Hain; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carroll,
five brothers and a sister.

Wanda R. Harris
MASON CITY
Wanda R. Harris, 69, of 923 Eighth St. S.E., died Friday (May
2, 1997) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating.
Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Street and one hour prior to
services at the church.
Memorials may be given to the Wanda R. Harris Memorial Fund.
Wanda Harris was born March 8, 1928 in Mason City the daughter
of Willis R. and Laura E. (Bailey) Harris. Wanda graduated from
Mason city High School, Mason City Junior College (NIACC), Hamilton
Business College and the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls. She taught for Hamilton Business College for 15 years
and for the Rudd Rockford Marble Rock Schools for 23 years retiring
in 1991. Wanda was a member of the First United Methodist Church
where she served on a number of committees. She was also a member
of R.R.M.R. Education Association, I.S.E.A., I.B.E.A., N.E.A.,
N.B.E.A. and W.S.G. (We Serve God). She volunteered at North
Iowa Mercy Health Center and enjoyed traveling and spending time
with her family.
Survivors include five aunts, Elizabeth Little of De Soto, Texas,
Beulah Eppens of Mason City, Goldie Boyd of Mason City, Viola
Bailey of Nora Springs, Blanche Bailey of Charles City; a uncle,
Donald Bailey and wife Armand of Bethesda, Md.; and many cousins.
Preceded in death by her parents and five uncles, Melvin, Lester,
Harold, Oswald and Gail Bailey.
