Clara Anna Margaret Macken

GRAFTON  



 Clara Anna Margaret Macken, 84, of Grafton, died Thursday (May

4, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran

Church with the Rev. Gregory Bjornstad officiating. Burial will

be in the Grafton Cemetery.



Friends may call from noon until time of services on Monday

at the church.



Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, is in charge

of arrangements.



Clara Anna Margaret Macken was born on May 30, 1912, in Humboldt,

S.D., the daughter of August and Emma (Pahl) Bork.



She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through

confirmation in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Humboldt, S.D.



When she was 6 years old, her family moved from Humboldt, S.D.,

to Worth County, Iowa, where she attended rural school near Grafton.



After completing her schooling, she worked for her mother-in-law

and father-in-law on their farm in Worth County, near Grafton.



She was united in marriage to Clarence Macken on June 8, 1942,

in Albert Lea, Minn. He preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1950.



After their marriage, she began working as a cleaning lady for

the Farmers State Bank in Grafton and also was a cook for the

Grafton Public School system from 1953 until her retirement in

1977.



She enjoyed gardening, collecting salt and pepper shakers, and

cooking not only for her family but for others, but her great

love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.



She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and

the church circle, and the Ladies Legion Auxiliary in Grafton.



Survivors include two daughters, Judy Macken of Mason City and

Sharon Ebaugh of St. Cloud, Minn.; two grandchildren, David Ebaugh

of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Jason Ebaugh of St. Cloud, Minn.;

one sister, Augusta Saathoff of the Manly Care Center; and several

nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.



Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents;

one brother, Lloyd Bork; and five sisters, Emma Dewhirst, Bertha

Jordan, Esther Polzin, Ruth Olson and Myrtle Martinie.

Gregory W.`Greg' Hawley

CLEAR LAKE  



Gregory W. ``Greg'' Hawley, 30, of 3708 240th St., died  Wednesday

(May 7, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.



Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United

Methodist Church,  with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial

will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.



There is no visitation. The body was cremated.



Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason

City, is in charge of arrangements.



Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Clear

Lake, or the American Heart Association in his memory.



Gregory W. Hawley was born July 4, 1966, in Quincy, Ill., son

of Robert W. and Alice (Vanderwal) Hawley.



The family lived in various cities throughout the United States

while he was growing up.



Greg graduated from high school in Germantown, Tenn.



He then graduated from Columbia School of Broadcasting in Memphis,

Tenn.



He worked for Radio Shack at Plaza West, Mason City, for two

years and for the past three and one-half years, he worked for

KLSS/KRIB Radio Station and just recently went to work for New

Horizons Electronics out of Austin, Minn.



He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake;

current president of the North Iowa Amateur Radio Club, and a

member of the Clear Lake Christian Singles Group.



Greg W. Hawley is survived by his parents, Robert W. and Alice

Hawley of Clear Lake; a brother, Doug Hawley and his wife, Jody,

of Des Moines; a nephew, Joshua Hawley of Des Moines; his paternal

grandmother, Louise Hawley of Mason City; and his maternal grandmother,

Gertrude Vanderwal of Pella; and numerous cousins.



He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, his maternal

grandfather; two uncles, Chuck Glaman and David Hawley; one aunt,

Julie Hawley; and a cousin, Chris Hawley.

MASON CITY 



 Donald E. Lowe, 66, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Friday (May

9, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.



A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. James B. Norem

of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will be held

at a later date.



The body was cremated. Donald's family will be greeting friends

at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.



Other arrangements are incomplete at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Kathryn Hardegger Morgan

EDINA, Minn. 



 Kathryn (Hardegger) Morgan, 92, of Edina, formerly of Cleveland,

Minn., peacefully passed away Wednesday (May 7, 1997) at the

Edina Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church

of Nativity, Cleveland, Minn., with Father Clarence Vavra officiating.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Le Sueur.



Visitation was held on Friday at the Le Center Funeral Home,

Le Center, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m.



Kathryn Hardegger Morgan was born July 26, 1904, on a farm near

Cleveland, Minn., to John and Elizabeth (Wolf) Hardegger.



She attended school in Cleveland and Mankato and then St. Mary's

Nursing school where she graduated as an RN in 1927.



She was united in marriage to Marian ``Jim'' Morgan on Nov.

21, 1927, in Mankato.



They lived in Mankato where she worked at the Mankato Clinic

until they moved to Mason City, Iowa, where she worked at Park

Hospital for 35 years. After retiring, she returned to Cleveland,

Minn., until 1993 when she moved to the Edina Care Center.



She enjoyed card playing, boating and traveling and was active

in her church.



She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and

the Legion of Mary.



She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Norris of Eagan;

granddaughter, Colleen Norris of Minneapolis; grandson, David

Norris of St. Paul; grandson, Greg Norris of Hopkins; granddaughter,

Mary Norris of Mankato; and great-grandchild, Mason Norris.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Marian Morgan who

died Nov. 14, 1952; father, John Hardegger; mother, Elizabeth

(Wolff) Hardegger; two sisters, Lucy and Mayme; and one brother,

Joe.

 John G. Jensen, 81, of 708 Eighth Ave., died Friday  (May 9,

1997) at home.



Funeral services are tentatively set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday

at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. Burial will be in

the Sunnyside Memory Gardens near Charles City.

 Harold Alfred Draheim, 88, of 19343 A 220th St., died Friday

(May 9, 1997) at home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Ken Hatland

of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel

and one hour prior to services on Monday.

MASON CITY  



Donald E. Lowe, 66, of 324 Second Street N.E., died Friday (May

Donald E. Lowe was born on Sept. 25, 1930 at Emmett County,

the son of Charles and Cleo (Amsbaugh) Lowe.



On July 2, 1979, he was united in marriage to Dianne Muller

at Jackson, Minn.



Donald enjoyed fishing and visiting with people.  He was a big

fan of the Chicago Cubs.



He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City.



Survivors include his wife Dianne Lowe of Mason City; two brothers,

J.C. Lowe and his wife Betty of Mason City, and Charles Lowe

and his wife Myrtle of Clear Lake; three sisters, Gladys Whitehurst

of Mason City, Freida Rezab and her husband Norman of Plymouth,

and Verna Angel and her husband Jesse of Mason City; and many

nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two

sisters.

Ryan Douglas Ogaard, infant son of Douglas and Pamela (Graf)

Ogaard, was born and died on Tuesday (May 6, 1997) in Minneapolis.

The family resides at 820 Ninth N.E., Mason City.



Ryan's graveside services were held Friday morning at Elmwood

Cemetery with the Rev. Chris Hellevik of Trinity Lutheran Church

officiating.  Prugh Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.



Ryan is survived by his parents Doug and Pam, his four sisters

Ashley, Stacie, Kelli, and Christy, all of Mason City; his maternal

grandparents John and Margaret Graf of Mason City; Paternal grandparents,

Gordon and Rose Ogaard of Mason City; his aunt Karla and her

husband Jeff Rippentrop of Mason City; one uncle, Kevin Ogaard

of Burlington; and several cousins.

Mary Brown, 90, died Wednesday (May 7, 1997) at Clarksville

Community Nursing Home, Clarksville.



Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday at the St.

John's EV. Lutheran Church, rural Greene. There will be no visitation.

Inurnment will be in St. John's EV. Lutheran Cemetery, Rural

Greene, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating.



Mary was born Nov. 24, 1906 in Butler County, the daughter of

John Groenewold and Marie Kannegiesser.  She attended rural Butler

County Country schools. On Dec. 31, 1929 she married John Brown

of in Nashua. Mary was a home maker and a member of St. John's

EV Lutheran Church.



Survivors include two sons, Jack Brown of Bristow, and Harold

Brown of Shell Rock; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter-in-law,

two brothers, and two sisters.

chapel, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the

chapel on Monday.



Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, in memory of

Harold A. Draheim.



Harold Alfred Draheim was born July 13, 1908, in Charles City,

the son of Carl and Nellie (Nixon) Draheim.  He married Margaret

Andersen on July 27, 1940, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.



Harold grew up in Charles City and graduated from Charles City

Highs School.  he worked as a cabinet maker at Mason City Millwork

for 42 years until retiring in 1972.  Harold enjoyed hunting,

fishing, gardening, and spending time outdoors.  He loved woodworking.



Survivors include, his wife, Margaret Draheim of Mason City;

one daughter, Mary Postma and her husband Dick of Marion; two

sons, William Draheim and his wife Karen of Nora Springs, and

Thomas Draheim and his wife Sandy of Rockwell; seven grandchildren,

Matthew Postma of Mason City, Ann Day and her husband Corey of

Iowa City, Paige Friederick and her husband Bart of Cedar Rapids,

Megan Postma of Marion, Jeffrey Draheim and his wife Erin of

Bloomington, Minn., Jayson Draheim of Nora Springs, and Sue Ann

Nelson and her husband Tyler of Clear Lake; three great-grandchildren,

Jordan Postma of Marion, and Sam and Lacey Wildes, both of Bloomington,

Minn.; and one sister, Zola Malamen and her husband Paul of Elk

River, Minn.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kenneth Jackson, 68, of rural Hampton, died Saturday (May 10,

1997) from injuries received in an automobile accident at the

corner of Mallard Road and 90th St., Franklin County.



Funeral services for Kenneth Jackson will be held at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at the Church of the Open Bible, Iowa Falls, with burial

to follow at Maynes Grove Cemetery, rural Hampton.



Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Linn's

Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, with the family receiving friends between

the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. Monday evening.

the Riceville Community Rest home.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Lindstrom

Funeral Home, Riceville.



Gordon Was born on April 27, 1945 in Elma.



Survivors include his daughter, Stacey Bangh of Eagan, Minn.;

his son Cory Larsen of Eden Prarie, Minn.; his mother, Helen

Larsen of Riceville; two brothers, Charles E. Larsen and Richard

L. Larsen both of Elma; four sisters, Myrna M. Jacoby of Waterloo,

Catherine (Katie) Rieken of Elma; Norma J. Pontenberg of Waterloo,

and Irene H. Heying of New Hampton, also surviving his former

wife, Mary Lee.



He was preceded in death by his father and one son.

Thompson.

Judith was born July 25, 1910 in Hugo, Colo.



Survivors include two daughters, Janice Larsen of LaCrescent,

Minn., and Junelle Hengesteg of Stewartville, Minn.; two sister,

Irene Kedney of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Rachel Retland

of Thompson; two brothers, Emmet Thorland of Watertown, Wisc.,

and Daniel Thorland of Thompson; and five grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and six brothers.

William was born Feb. 1, 1918 in Butler County.

two half sisters, Wilma McKinney of Aredale, and Lavon Johnson

Glenn Pierce Brookins was born Sept. 20, 1902, at Lawler.



Survivors include a sister, Edna Huffman of Charles City; and

two brothers, Robert Brookins of Clarinda and Franklin Brookins

of Searcy, Ark.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Anna Marie (Junkermeir) Melcher was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Ulster

Township, Floyd County.



Survivors include her husband, Raymond, of Nora Springs; a son,

Roger, of Rudd; and a sister, Marie Johnson, of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, four brothers

and two sisters.

Walter E.C. Miller was born Oct. 14, 1914, on a farm near Elmore,

Minn.



Survivors include his wife, Aleatha Miller of Buffalo Center;

his daughter, Priscilla Miller of Buffalo Center; his son, Walter

``Mick'' M.K. Miller of Reston, Va.; two grandsons; and one sister,

Teressa Butler of Winnebago, Minn.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two

brothers.

(May 12, 1997) at home.

Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating.

Burial will be in the Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Petersen

Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.



Mary E. Hulshizer was born Nov. 15, 1922, in rural Leland.



Survivors include her husband, James Hulshizer of Thompson;

two daughters, Marcia Von Hagen of Mason City, and Sandra Thompson

of Osage; two sons, Martin Furst II of Britt and Raymond Furst

of Randall; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six step-

grandchildren;

and seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and two brothers, Melvin Meyer

of Britt and David Meyer of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband

and one sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter,

and one brother.

Elaine Margaret Williams, 75, of Denver, Colo., died Wednesday

(April 30, 1997) at Porter Care Hospice in Littleton, Colo.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calmar

Lutheran Church, Calmar.



French Funeral Home, Calmar, is in charge of arrangements.



Elaine Okre was born Jan. 6, 1922 in Calmar, Iowa, to Melvin

and Bertha (Stenseth) Okre.



Elaine graduated from Calmar High School.



On June 2, 1945, she married Spencer Garfield Williams of Decorah,

Iowa.



Elaine was a homemaker and active in the Lutheran Church.



Survivors include her daughter, Lanita Zylla of Kalamazoo, Mich.;

son, Steven Williams and his wife, Kathy of Highlands Ranch,

Colo.; sisters, Gladys Fjelstul and her husband, Maynard of Parachute,

Colo., Dorothy Hanson of Roseville, Minn., and Avis Greer and

her husband, Dale of Edina, Minn.; grandson, Brian Zylla and

his wife, Candice of Coldwater, Mich.; and granddaughter, Tara

Zylla of Morris, Ill.



She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 24, 1994.

J. Gilbert ``Gunner'' Blood, 73, of Sheffield, died Sunday (May

J. Gilbert Blood Sr., known as ``Gunner'' by most who knew him,

was born on May 6, 1924 in Hampton, to Ernest Blood and Marie

Oehlerking.



He was baptized on May 26, 1957 at the Methodist Church in Sheffield,

where he lived for most of his life.



After school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Farragut, Idaho

where he served as a machinist's mate 3rd class from 1943 until

1946.



After his discharge, he was united in marriage to Juanita Emhoff

in Kirksville, Mo. on Dec. 14, 1946.



They made their home in Sheffield and had a son, James G. Blood

Jr.



Gunner worked at the Sheffield Brick and Tile Company for 40

years, retiring in 1986 as plant superintendent.



His special interests included hunting and fishing, which were

his last thoughts as he spoke with his nurse about one of his

favorite fishing spots in Southern Minnesota just moments before

his death. Others included playing cards with the gang every

Thursday afternoon, watching his grandchildren faithfully in

athletics, and just recently, watching as his great-grandchildren

tore up his house.



Gunner leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife

of 50 years, Juanita of Sheffield; his son, James and wife, Diana

of Sheffield; granddaughters, Tracy Shreckengost and her husband,

Tim; Shelley Myers and her husband, Bill, and Erin Blood and

Jamie Blood, all of Sheffield; three great-grandchildren, Hunter

Myers, Sydney and Madison Shreckengost; and his faithful companions,

Rusty, Cash, Sonny, and Chuck.



He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard

and Raymond.

 Todd M. Wilson, 23, of Dumont, died Sunday (May 11, 1997) at

University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Dumont Reformed Church, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating.

Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema

Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.



Todd M. Wilson was born Sept. 9, 1973 in Waterloo.



Survivors include his father and mother, Pat and Cleta Wilson

of Dumont; one sister, Tanya Wilson of Dumont; and his maternal

grandparents.



He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, and his

maternal grandfather.

Mildred L. Young

OSAGE  



Mildred L. Young, 74, of Osage died Monday (May 12, 1997) at

the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday  at St.

John's Lutheran Church south of Osage, with the Rev. Chris F.

Gugel and Vicar Steven Barker officiating. Cremation will take

place following services. Inurnment will be at Little Cedar Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Champion Funeral

Home and one hour before services at the church.



Mildred L. Young was born Nov. 6, 1922 on the family farm near

St. Ansgar.



Survivors include her husband, Marion Young of Osage; two sons,

Robert Young of Osage and John Young of Brooklyn Center, Minn.;

six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Donna Lee Akerberg

CLEAR LAKE  



 Mrs. Donna Lee Akerberg, 70, of 711 N. Shore Drive, died Monday

(May 12, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason

City.



Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran

Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and the

Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating.



Following the memorial services, the family asks that you please

join them at their home to share memories from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday.



The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.



The body was cremated and there will be no visitation.



Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge

of arrangements.



Donna was born May 30, 1926, in Huron, S.D., the daughter of

Dick Edward and Leone (Bales) White.



She graduated from Central High School in 1944 in Sioux City.



Donna married Warren Akerberg on May 31, 1945, in Sioux City.



They moved to Clear Lake in 1951 to live. She was a secretary

for Kimball-White Seed Company in Clear Lake from 1952-54. She

modeled for Lundberg's Clothing in 1956.



 Donna was the secretary at the Congregational Church, Clear

Lake, in the 1970s.



Donna was one of the originators of Artichoke Two Antiques and

co-founders of Antique Alley in Clear Lake.



 She was a gray lady at North Iowa Medical Center for over 10

years.



Donna and Warren have enjoyed spending the last 13 winters on

their boat, Checkers, in Marathon, Fla., where she was a great

first mate and pilot.



Donna loved playing bridge, traveling, her friends and especially

her family.



Donna is survived by her husband, Warren Akerberg of Clear Lake;

three children, Jan Edward Akerberg and his wife, Nora, of Clayton,

Mo.; Deby Lee Cassill of Tallahassee, Fla., and Lon Paul Akerberg

and his wife, Lynn, of Lawrence, Kan.; six grandchildren, Daniel

Cassill, Casie Akerberg, Nicholas Akerberg, Clinton  Akerberg,

Christopher Kelly and Alexander Akerberg.



She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Patty

Henry.

MASON CITY 



 Paul G. Rood, 55, 1218 S. Federal Ave., died Monday (May 12,

1997)  at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. James

Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson

officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St.Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services

on Thursday at the church.



Mr. Rood was born April 6, 1942, at Rutland, the son of Wilbur

and Hilda (Torkelson) Rood.



He attended Bode High School until 1958 when he moved to a farm

southeast of Mason City.



He was a 1960 graduate of Rockford High School.



He was united in marriage to Judy K. Buehler on Aug. 15, 1964,

at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mason City.



Mr. Rood was a self-employed carpenter for 37 years in the Mason

City area.



He loved fishing and woodworking. He especially enjoyed restoring

his 1931 Model A panel truck.



Mr. Rood was formerly a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church,

Nora Springs, for seven years, serving on the church council

for three years. He was currently a member of St. James Lutheran

Church, Mason City.



He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be

sadly missed by his friends and family.



Survivors include his wife, Judy Rood of Mason City; two daughters,

Rhonda Fink and her husband, Jeryl, of Sumner; and Teresa Klemp

and her husband, Mark, of Sumner; one son, Brian Rood of Mason

City; three grandchildren, Austin P. Fink, Eric A. Fink and Taylor

M. Klemp; five sisters, Eleanor McEachran and her husband, Ralph;

Shirley Hedrick and her husband, Paul, and LaVina Brass and her

husband, Anthony, all of Mason City; Janet Cooper and her husband,

Charles, Albert Lea, Minn., and Loretta Bennett and her husband,

Duane, Cedar Falls; one brother, Jerrold Rood and his wife, Jean,

of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include her husband, James Hulshizer of Thompson;

Thompson of Osage; two sons, Martin Furst II of Britt and Raymond

Furst of Randall; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six

stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and two

brothers, Melvin Meyer of Britt and David Meyer of Mason City.
