Thresa M. Beneke
MASON CITY
Thresa M. Beneke, 95, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday
(May 13, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev.
James B. Norem of St. Paul Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment
will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. The body was cremated.
Memorials may be given to the Thresa M. Beneke Memorial Fund.
Thresa was born Dec. 7, 1901, at rural Nora Springs, daughter
of Hans F. and Clara (Gratias) Jorgensen.
She attended country school near Nora Springs and graduated
from Mason City High School in 1920.
Thresa was married to Edwin M. Beneke on June 10, 1925, at Mason
City.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was active
in Womens Circle at church, when she was able to be. She was
a former member of the Mason City Camera Club and Garden Club.
She enjoyed playing bridge.
She is survived by a sister, Mildred Hedgard of Plant City,
Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Art Gratias
of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; one son, Robert;
two sisters, Anna Cumming and Mabel Jorgensen; and brother, Alvin
Jorgensen.

Telford H. ``Ted'' Peterson, 660 11th St. N.E., died Tuesday
(May 13, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev.
Neville Clayton, interim pastor of First Christian Church, officiating.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery,
Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and until time of services
on Friday.
Memorials may be given to the Telford ``Ted'' Peterson Memorial
Fund.
Ted was born July 27, 1912, in Lake Mills, the son of Peter
and Gusta (Fjone) Peterson.
During World War II, Ted served in the United States Army in
Germany.
He married Ellen M. Hickling on May 27, 1949.
Ted was a self-employed truck driver for many years in the Mason
City area.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen M. Peterson of Mason City;
brother, Royden O. Peterson of Mason City; sister, Phyllis G.
Killian of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Wesley Hickling and
his wife, Florence, of Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers,
Adler, Donovan and Phillip.

Carlin Counsell

Carlin Counsell, 66, of Cresco, died suddenly Tuesday (May
13, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United
Methodist Church, Cresco, with the Rev. Lewis Flanigan officiating.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday in the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the West Room
of the United Methodist Church, Cresco, and continue from 9 a.m.
until time of services on Friday.
Champion Funeral Home of Osage is in charge of arrangements.
Carlin Counsell was born June 28, 1930, near New Haven in Mitchell
County, the son of Ernest and Myrtle (Anderson) Counsell.
He attended rural school and graduated from Osage High School
in 1948.
He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean
Conflict.
Carlin married Beverly Cameron on July 13, 1974, at the Methodist
Church in Riceville.
He farmed in the New Haven area until 1974, and then was employed
by New Haven Livestock.
From 1978 to 1993, he owned and operated Carlin's Pizza in Cresco.
Carlin served on the Cresco City Council for seven years and
was mayor of Cresco for the years, 1981 and 1982.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #135 in Cresco.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Counsell of Cresco; his
mother, Myrtle Counsell of Osage; six daughters, Ann Steenhard
and her husband, Alan, of Mason City; Sharon Counsell of Cedar
Rapids; Nancy Goebel and her husband, Jerry, of Oskaloosa; Robin
Emerson and her husband, Joe, of Pinelles Park, Fla.; Susan Hyke
and her husband, Kenny, of Creso; and Kandice Becker and her
husband, Ryan, of Cresco; three sons, Michael Counsell and his
wife, Penny, of Osage; Mark Rollins of Dubuque;; and Joel Rollins
and his wife, Nancy, of Claremont, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and
two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Wiegers of Boise,
Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Counsell, and
a sister, Marise Groves.

Harold Petersen
MASON CITY
Harold Petersen, 81, of 4 Third St. N.W., Mason City, passed
away Tuesday (May 13, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center
East.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.
Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.
The family suggests memorials be given to the Harold Petersen
Memorial Fund.
Harold was born on the family farm in rural Thornton, the son
of Marinus and Freda (Nielsen) Petersen on July 11, 1915. He
attended rural school in Thornton.
Harold farmed with his father until 1942 when he entered the
Army during World War II and served in the European and Pacific
Theater.
Following the service, he came back to the family farm.
Harold married Gladys Jean Lynch and they farmed southeast of
Rockwell for a number of years. Harold moved to Marshalltown
in 1965 and worked for Fisher Controls until his retirement in
1978.
He then moved to the Sheffield area and later to his present
home in Mason City.
Harold enjoyed keeping in contact with his army buddies, doing
woodworking crafts, helping his friends and especially his grandchildren.
He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #733, Mason City.
Harold is survived by his son, Chris Petersen and his wife,
Kristi, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Sylvia Pross and her husband,
William D., of Diamond Head, Miss.; Alma Laudner and her husband,
W.C. ``Dugan'', of Mason City; and Mrs Roland (Norma) Salier
of Nora Springs; one brother, Elmer Petersen of Proctor, Minn.;
and two grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Petersen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister
and his wife, Jean.

Edward Eugene Clifford, 43, of 701 14th St. S., died Wednesday
(May 14, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.
Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors
by the Clear Lake American Legion.
Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson
James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with a
6 p.m. prayer service.

Edward was born on Nov. 29, 1953, in Nora Springs, the son of
Eugene and Velma (Nihoff) Clifford.
He received his education in Nora Springs and Mason City.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1974 to
1977, while he was stationed in Alaska.
Following his honorable discharge, he worked customizing vans
for Winnebago and then was employed at Tonka Coolers.
He most recently was employed in maintenance at the Nora Springs
Care Center where he worked until his illness forced him to quit
on April 7, 1997.
Edward was united in marriage to Nancy Stover on Aug. 7, 1993,
in Clear Lake.
Ed was a master of gardening tending his vegetable garden and
everyone enjoyed his flower and rock gardens as well.
He also enjoyed pheasant hunting and fishing at Clear Lake.
He was a member of the American Legion in Clear Lake.
Edward will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Nancy, of Clear
Lake; his mother, Velma DeBolt, Florence, Ky.; one daughter,
Tonya Clifford; and one son, Jeramya Clifford, both of Mason
City; two stepdaughters, Tonya and her husband, Wayne Martin
of Rockwell and Janan Walters of Rockford; one stepson, Monte
and his wife, Tammi Walters of Osage; two sisters, Betty Clifford
of Mason City and Ruth Ann and her husband, Jay Fredstrom of
Florence, Ky.; a granddaughter, Zelda Bass of Mason City; two
stepgrandchildren, Abby and Colby Martin; many nieces and nephews;
and his dearest and closest friends, Janice Losee and Marilyn
and Rich Ritter.
Edward was greeted in heaven by his father, Eugene; and his
grandparents.

Jack C. Graney was born Feb. 3, 1926, in Mason City, son of
Clifton and Loretta M. (Kelly) Graney.
He married Elsie M. Nelson on Sept. 15, 1946, in Crystal Lake.
Jack served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was business manager for several years for IBEW #432.
Since retirement from Interstate Power, he and his wife spent
winters in Texas and Arizona.
Jack loved hunting and fishing trips to Canada with his sons
and grandsons and morning coffee with his lifetime friend, Joe
Whalen.
He also enjoyed golfing and bowling.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and a lifetime
member of the VFW Post #733.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Graney of Mason City; three
children, Kelly Graney and his wife, Karen, of Hampton; Karla
Strong and her husband, Kent, of Aurora, Colo., and Kevin Graney
and his wife, Pamela, of Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren, Matt
and Alison Strong, both of Aurora, Colo.; Kyle and Kasey Graney
of Hampton, and Jacquie and Kevin Graney, both of Rockford, Ill.;
one great-granddaughter, Taylor Kay Graney of Hampton; one sister,
Barbara Sasse and her husband, Russel, of Robbinsdale, Minn.;

Galen Eugene Potter, the son of Thomas J. and Alta (Eikenberry)
Potter, was born March 25, 1929, at Buffalo Center.
After attending school at Buffalo Center, he farmed in the area.
On Jan. 1, 1955, he married Alice Jean Stenersen at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua.
They farmed near Buffalo Center for one year, near Forest City
until 1978 and southeast of Crystal Lake until Galen's death,
on May 15, 1997.
He enjoyed his family and farming.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.
He is survived by his wife, Alice J. Potter, of Britt; five
children, Elaine Deibler and her husband, Tom, of Garner; Galen
W. Potter and his wife, Jeannie, of Hopewell, Va.; Ruby Dodd
of Garner; Cheryl Barkema and her husband, Ed, of Garner; and
Doug Potter and his wife, Deb, of Forest City; 13 grandchildren,
Matthew Deibler, Hilary Deibler, Hannah Deibler, Amanda Potter,

Marie E. Whitehurst, 88, of Garner, died Friday (May 16, 1997)

Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Marie Elizabeth Whitehurst, the daughter of Fred and Christina
(MacKenzie) Larsen, was born Feb. 24, 1909, on a farm near Crystal
Lake. She attended country school and then graduated from Crystal
Lake High School in 1927. On March 28, 1933, she was married
to John William Whitehurst at the United Methodist parsonage
in Britt. They worked for various farmers in the Britt and Garner
areas until 1946, when they moved east of Garner and continued
farming for themselves. After John's death on Aug. 25, 1991,
Marie moved to the Prairie View Apartments. She enjoyed her
family, canning and traveling to Europe.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the Garner
Senior Citizens.
She is survived by four sons, Richard Whitehurst and his wife,
Jeanette, of Garner; Robert Whitehurst and his wife, Sandra,
of Algona; Rollin Whitehurst and his wife, MaDonna, of Thief
River Falls, Minn., and Reuben ``Butch'' Whitehurst and his wife,
Terri, of Garner; five grandchildren, Lori Lynn Boyken and her
husband, Danny; Richard Whitehurst; Matthew Whitehurst; Shane
Whitehurst and Shelley Haugland and her husband, Mark; and five
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Whitehurst;
a granddaughter, Shannon Elizabeth Whitehurst; a grandson, Edward
Allen Whitehurst; her parents; two sisters, Viola Jacobsen and
Rebecca McEldowney; and two brothers, Anton Larsen and Eddie

Vaneta F. Ingersoll, 78, of 646 First St. S.E., died Thursday
(May 15, 1997) at Heritage Care Center.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's
Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Jack Paisley
officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell.
Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural wake service at
7 p.m.
Vaneta F. Ingersoll was born Feb. 14, 1919, at Rockwell, the
daughter of Henry F. and Elizabeth (Kipper) Scholl.
On May 22, 1976, she was married to Everett A. Ingersoll at
St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City.
Mrs. Ingersoll was employed by several restaurants in Dubuque
and Clear Lake. She also was employed by Fleetguard, Lake Mills,
for 15 years, and retired from there.
She enjoyed bowling, for which she won many trophies, and playing
cards. She also liked to sew and made many quilts. She especially
liked to can vegetables and give the canned goods away to friends.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the VFW Women's
Auxiliary and the American Legion.
She is survived by her husband, Everett Ingersoll, of Mason
City; four sisters, Valeria Logan of Rockwell; Velma Dolan and
her husband, Toby, of Bettendorf; Vleta Theilen and her husband,
Ted, of Swaledale, and Virginia Millard and her husband, Raymond,
of Manly; one sister-in-law, Ruth Scholl of Mason City; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Janet;
one brother; and one sister.

Edna S. Hartshorn, 87, of Shell Rock, died Wednesday evening
(May 14, 1997) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of natural
causes.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church, Waverly, with Pastor Dennis H. Dickman officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kaiser-Corson
Funeral Home, Waverly, and one hour before services on Tuesday
at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Edna was born July 31, 1909, in Dayton Township, Bremer County,
rural Sumner, the daughter of Herman and Sophia (Pipho) Sell.
She was baptized on Aug. 22, 1909, and confirmed her faith on
March 25, 1923, both at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek,
rural Sumner. Edna attended parochial school at St. John and
later graduated from Sumner High School in 1927. For the next
14 years, Edna taught in rural schools in the Sumner and Tripoli
vicinity. On July 9, 1942, Edna married Fred Strike in Yorktown,
Ill. She then taught for two years in Illinois before returning
to Tripoli to teach for the next year. Edna started teaching
for St. Paul's Lutheran School, Waverly, where she taught for
the next 15 years. Fred died on Nov. 28, 1977. On Dec. 21,
1979, Edna was married to Jack Hartshorn at the Danforth Chapel
on the Wartburg College campus by Rev. Marshall Johnson. Jack
died on June 14, 1988. From August 1975, until March 1978, Edna
was the secretary and receptionist for Dr. M.O. Brye in Waverly.
Edna was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, where
she was a member of Nazareth Circle. Edna enjoyed spending time
in her garden, but her life was devoted to her church, teaching
and her family.
Edna is survived by two sons, Theron Strike of Mason City, and
Norman and his wife, Gwen Strike, of Takoma Park, Md.; six stepchildren
and their spouses, Merle and Shirley Strike of Prophetstown,
Ill.; Eugene and Lillian Stroke of Sterling, Ill.; Arlyn and
Bert Strike of Dekalb, Ill.; Nyla and Jim Schmadeke of Ankeny;
Jack Hartshorn Jr. and his wife of West Des Moines, and Ellen
Mae and Frank Geer of Centerville, Ohio; two grandchildren, Ethan
and Sophia Strike of Takoma Park, Md.; 22 stepgrandchildren;
and 17 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, three
sisters and two brothers.

Everett LeRoy Rick, 78, of 2606 S. Federal Ave., joined with
the Lord in loving presence of his family Friday (May 16, 1997)
at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wesley
United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the
Rev. David R. Shogren officiating. Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason
City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue one hour
prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Everett L. Rick was born March 2, 1919, in Hampton, the son
of Ernest and Catherine P. (Jenson) Rick. He graduated from
high school in Hampton in 1936. He served in the Navy during
World War II in 1941, stationed on the U.S.S. Florence Nightingale,
the U.S.S. Harry Lee, the U.S.S. Charles Carroll and the U.S.S.
Biscayne. Everett was a member of the Naval track team participating
against other countries and excelling in the high hurdles.
Everett worked for Ray E. Pauleys for many years as a sheet
metal worker. He recoppered the steeple at St. James Lutheran
Church and traveled on projects in Iowa and Wisconsin.
He married Ruth A. Krukow on Aug. 31, 1956, at the Methodist
Church in Rockford. This past August they celebrated their 40th
wedding anniversary. He enjoyed traveling across the country.
He was a skilled carpenter, building an addition and remodeling
his home over the years.
Everett enjoyed country western concerts and was an avid sports
fan, watching the Vikings and the Hawkeyes. He had a wonderful
sense of humor.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Ruth Rick, Mason
City; his seven children, Pam Fountas, Brad Rick and his wife,
Marlene, Tom Rick and his wife, Diane, Stan Rick, Christine Rick
and her fiancee, Keith, all of Mason City, Daniel Rick and his
fiancee, Kimberly, Oakdale, Conn., and Susan Nelson and her fiancee,
Dan, Mason City; thirteen grandchildren, Sarah, Heidi, Jessica,
Melissa, Alicia, Sheila, Robbie, Brandon, Luther, Spencer, John,
Lindsey and Kellie; one sister, Evelyn Carroll and her husband,
Jesse, Upland, Calif.; two brothers, Lyle Rick and his wife,
Irene, West Bend, and Lewis Rick and his wife, Mary, Mason City;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Velma Rick,
and one brother, Robert Rick, both in infancy.

John Daub of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren;
one sister, Mildred Miller of Elgin, Ill.; and one brother, Floyd
Hathaway of Marina Del Ray, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, three grandchildren,
one great-grandchild and seven brothers.

and in 1967 went to work for Thomas Machine Shop as a machinist.
He retired in 1990.
After his first wife, Helen, died in 1982, Andy married Addie
Bahnsen April 23, 1983. Andy enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.
He was a member of the Rock Falls United Methodist Church, North
Iowa Vintage Auto Club, Four & Six Cylinder Plymouth Club, was
a board member of the Kinney Pioneer Museum, a member of the
Cedar Valley Engine Club, was a technical adviser for 1932 Plymouth
automobiles and enjoyed showing his 1932 Plymouth in shows around
the country. He and his son, Clair, showed their third scale
hand-built model Case Steam Engine in shows around North Iowa.
Survivors include his wife, Addie M. Elsbury of Rock Falls;
son, Raymond Elsbury and his wife, Deanna, of Mason City; daughters,
Geraldine Schlough of Huntington Beach, Calif., Thelma Harris
and her husband, Richard, of Osage, and Coral Elsbury and her
husband, Timothy Nuehring, of Mason City; eight grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth was born June 28, 1913, in Cerro Gordo County, the daughter
of Steve H. and Mary (Chladek) Miller. Ruth attended schools
in Cerro Gordo County. She married Homer H. Johnson on Oct.
29, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The Johnsons
moved to Mason City that year. Ruth worked for Jacob E. Decker
and Sons, Lyon's Laundry, and the Cerro Gordo Cafe. Ruth was
a member of the Plymouth Road Bible Church, enjoyed canning,
gardening and her grandchildren.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Johnson and his wife, Karen,
of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Mary Ann Reed and her husband,
David, of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
two sisters, Katherine Wise of Mason City, and Vivian Dahl of
Winterset; and one brother, Orville C. Miller of Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Homer, in
1994; one brother; and two sisters.

riding, using the nature trails at Lime Creek Nature Center,
playing Nintendo, and collecting Space Jam items.
Cody is survived by his mother, Margaret Willard of Waterloo;
his father, Mike Fransen of Mason City; one sister, Brandy Fransen
of Mason City; four brothers, Jason Willard of New York, Eric
Willard of Kansas City, Mo., Michael Fransen Jr. and Lucas Fransen,
both of Mason City; his paternal grandmother, Beverly and her
husband, Loren Murphy, of Mason City; his paternal great-grandfather,
Carl Waddell of Mason City; five aunts, Cathy Patton, Linda Westendorf,
Diane Hampton, Loree Mitchell, and Lisa Schaer; seven uncles,
Mike and Mark Gardner, Jerry, Lowell and Charles Murphy, and
James and Joe Fransen; and many cousins.
Cody was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Roger
and Beverly Gardner; his paternal grandfather, Don Fransen; and

Arlene K. Blunt was born April 3, 1914, in Rockford, the daughter
of Warren and Vivian (Kennedy) Mathers. She married Lynn ``Skinny''
Rathjen in 1939, and he preceded here in death in 1960. She
then married George Blunt in 1966, and he preceded her in death
in 1978.
Arlene grew up in the Rudd and Rockford area and graduated from
Rudd High School. She was a cook for many years at the Rudd
schools. In 1966, she moved to California, until 1978, when
she returned to Rudd.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and cooking, and she loved spending
time with her family.
Survivors include one son, Gary Rathjen and his wife, Sandra,
of Sulphur Springs, Ark.; one granddaughter, Heather Rathjen
of Sulphur Springs, Ark.; one sister, Beverly O'Connell of Tulsa,
Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two sisters,
and one brother.
