Estelle L. Liekweg
MASON CITY
Estelle L. Liekweg, 93, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Friday
(May 2, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oak Hill
Cemetery, Parkersburg.
There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Major-Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorials to the Estelle L. Liekweg Memorial
Fund.
Estelle was born Dec. 21, 1903, in Chapin, the daughter of Louis
and Marsha (Lefler) Fischer.
She graduated from Chapin High School in 1923. Estelle married
Alvin Liekweg in 1925. The Liekwegs lived in the Hampton, Sheffield
and Parkersburg areas. Mr. Liekweg died in 1973. Estelle moved
to Cedar Falls to be near her sister and then moved to Mason
City in 1995. She taught ceramics from her home for 35 years.
Survivors include one son, Dalvin Liekweg, and his wife, Jo
Ann, of Mason City; two granddaughters, Lisa and Tonya Liekweg,
of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Liekweg, of Mason
City; one brother, Raymond Fischer, of Kingsville, Texas; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin;
three sisters; and two brothers.

Jan E. Jones, 37, died Saturday (May 3, 1997) at the Willow
Creek Care Center, Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday
at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Jack Paisley
officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Tenold
Funeral Home, with a parish rosary at 2:30 p.m. and a wake service
at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services
at the church on Wednesday.
Jan E. Jones was born Dec. 16, 1959, in Belmond.
Survivors include two brothers, Kevin Jones and Brian Jones,
both of Minneapolis.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Grace H. James, 81, of 2424 S. Jefferson Ave., died Saturday
(May 3, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave, with the Rev. David Anderson
of St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in
Memorial Park Cemetery.

on Tuesday morning at the funeral home.
Grace H. James was born Sept. 27, 1915, in Chaska, Minn., the
daughter of William and Rose (Paschka) Tiedeman. Grace married
William L. James on April 15, 1937, in Mason City. Grace and
her husband owned and operated James Grocery Store for 50 years
in Mason City.
Survivors include her daughters, Joann Hammarstedt and her husband,
Darrell, of Mason City, Chris Kalahar and her finance, Greg Fitzsimmons,
of Granger, and Rox Ann Northrupp and her husband, Dick, of Mason
City; grandchildren, Brian Hammarstedt and his wife, Janine,
of Mason City, Barb Nauman and her husband, Ron, of Floyd, and
Nancy Ruzicka and her husband, Jason, of Des Moines; Tad Kalahar
and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Syracuse, N.Y.; and Nikki and Abby
Northrupp of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Michele, Amanda
and Matthew Hammarstedt, Rob Nauman, David Ruzicka and Kristi
and Jessica Kalahar; brothers, Victor and William Tiedeman of
Mason City; sister, Lucille Montgomery of Mason City; and several
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William,
in 1983, one sister, and two brothers.

Steven C. Haugen Sr., 60, died Saturday (May 3, 1997) at St.
Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Church officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery.

Steven C. Haugen Sr. was born Aug. 24, 1936, in Muscatine.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Haugen of Forest City; four
sons, Steven Haugen Jr., Scott Haugen, John Haugen and Jeffrey
Haugen, all of Forest City; one brother, Michael Haugen of Fertile;
and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.

Donald Uker, 57, of 603 S. Jackson Ave., died Thursday (May
1, 1997) at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser

St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will
be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday,
where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation
will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Donald Eugene Uker was born Feb. 15, 1940, near Rockford.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Uker of Charles City; one
daughter, Cheryl Bluhm of Charles City; a son, Kevin Uker of
Tuscon, Ariz.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; his parents,
Merlyn and Viola Townsend of Belmond; a brother, Danny Uker of
Osage; and two sisters, Janet Smith of Omaha, Neb., and Carol
Steenblock of Belmond.
He was preceded in death by his father and a half-brother.

Wanda R. Harris, 69, of 923 Eighth St. N.E., died Friday (May
2, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at First United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating.
Burial will be in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Wanda R. Harris Memorial Fund.
Wanda Harris was born March 8, 1928, in Mason City, the daughter
of Willis R. and Laura E. (Bailey) Harris. Wanda graduated from
Mason City High School, Mason City Junior College (now North
Iowa Area Community College), Hamilton Business College and the
University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She taught for Hamilton
Business College for 15 years and for the Rudd-Rockford-Marble
Rock Schools for 23 years, retiring in 1991.
Wanda was a member of the First United Methodist Church where
she served on a number of committees. She was also a member of
R.R.M.R. Education Association, I.S.E.A., I.B.E.A., N.E.A., N.B.E.A.
and W.S.G. (We Serve God). She volunteered at North Iowa Mercy
Health Center and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her
family.
Survivors include five aunts, Elizabeth Little of De Soto, Texas,
Beulah Eppens of Mason City, Goldie Boyd of Mason City, Viola
Bailey of Nora Springs and Blanche Bailey of Charles City; an
uncle, Donald Bailey and his wife, Armand, of Bethesda, Md.;
and many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five uncles, Melvin,
Lester, Harold, Oswald and Gail Bailey.

Eunice A. Tice
CHAMPAIGN, Ill.
Eunice A. Tice, 79, formerly of the Mason City-Clear Lake area,
died Friday (May 2, 1997) at the Manor Care Center in Champaign.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Wayside
Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 19 S. Georgia Ave.,
Mason City, with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating. Burial
will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Major-Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
The family suggests memorials to the Eunice and George I. Tice,
M.D., Memorial Fund at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.
Eunice was born May 21, 1917, in Mason City, the daughter of
Harry R. and Mabel E. (Teed) Anderson. She enjoyed swimming
and sailboat racing during her school years and became known
as ``puny Eunice'' because of her small size.
She attended junior college in Mason City with her future
husband, George Tice, and they courted while he went to medical
school at the University of Iowa. She completed training as
a dietician at Iowa State. They were married Dec. 4, 1941, just
before George joined the U.S. Navy. After the war, they lived
in Rochester, Minn. while George finished his surgical residency
at the Mayo Clinic.
They returned to Mason City in November of 1947, to join the
medical practice of George's father, Claude Tice. George and
Eunice spent their summers at a cottage on Clear Lake and remodeled
it in 1977 to become their permanent home. They also vacationed
in an apartment in Switzerland from 1974 until George's death
in 1989. More recently, Eunice had been residing at the Manor
Care Home in Champaign, Ill., where her daughter, Ann, lives.
Eunice was an active member of the First United Methodist Church,
past president of the Mason City Women's Club, Phoenicians, P.E.O.,
Tri Delt Sorority, Mortar Board (honorary society at Iowa State
University), Mason City Medical Auxiliary, volunteer at the MacNider
Art Museum and was a charter member of the Clear Lake Yacht Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Tice, M.D., and her husband,
Joseph B. Barkmeier, of Champaign, Ill.; sons, Alan D. Tice,
M.D., and his wife, Constance, of Tacoma, Wash., Paul Tice, M.D.,
and his wife, Jody, of Bremerton, Wash., and Dale E. Tice and
his wife, Mary Nan, of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren, Dan
and Kyle Barkmeier, Jennifer, Jonathan and Whitney Tice, Amanda
Tice, and Anderson and Nathan Tice.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. George
Tice; and an infant son, John.

Archie F. Stockseth, 89, of Belmond, died Saturday (May 3, 1997)
at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Olaf
Lutheran Church,, with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating.
Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold

Archie F. Stockseth, the son of Henry O. and Anna (Molstad)
Stockseth, was born on Oct. 20, 1907, in his family farmhouse,
west of Belmond, where he has lived since birth. He farmed the
same farm until his retirement in 1971.
Archie enjoyed his nieces and nephews and his love of the land,
he carried through with his garden and strawberry bed.
The education of others was very important to Archie, and he
established the Stockseth Scholarship Fund at the Belmond-Klemme
High School and at Waldorf College in Forest City. He recently
donated the funds for a complete computer lab at the Belmond-Klemme
high School.
Archie entered the Belmond Health Care Center on March 27, 1997,
and was a resident of the Belmond Community Hospital from April
3, 1997, until his death on May 3, 1997.
Survivors include nephews, Art Stockseth of Belmond; Richard
Stockseth of Humboldt; Irwin Rosheim of St. Paul, Minn.; Donald
Swenson of Ames; and Merlin Stockseth of Belmond; nieces, Margorie
(Rosheim) Wagner of Tucumcari, N.M.; Maxine (Swenson) McDaniel
of Blythedale, Mo.; Ruth (Stockseth) Olson of Lake Mills,; and
Lois Stockseth of Belmond; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Harry; sisters,
Mamie Rosheim and Hazel Swenson; and two nephews, Vernon Swenson

Patrick E. Cahill
HORSESHOE BEND, Ark.
Patrick E. Cahill, 68, of Horseshoe Bend, and formerly of
Waterloo and Denver, Iowa, died on Monday evening (May 5, 1997)
at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from complications
of pneumonia.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's
Catholic Church, Waverly, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating.
Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Cemetery, Rockwell, Iowa.
Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Kaiser-Corson
Funeral Home, Denver, Iowa, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. vigil
service.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Horseshoe
Bend.
The Cahill family suggests that memorials be directed to the
Lions World Services for the Blind.
Patrick was born on Dec. 30, 1928, in Cartersville, Iowa, the
son of John V. and Ella C. (Beecher) Cahill.
Pat was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
in Rockwell, Iowa.
He graduated from the Rockwell High School in 1947, and then
attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and Hamilton Business
College in Mason City, Iowa.
Pat worked for his father in the family auto shop in Rockwell,
Iowa, from age 10.
While in college, Pat worked for SS Kresge Company and Peter
Kewitt Construction Company in Wyoming building roads in the
summer of 1950.
On Aug. 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Ruth A. Suss
at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, Iowa.
The couple made their home in Waterloo, Iowa, where Pat worked
as a supervisor in the IBM Tabulating Department at Rath Packing
from 1951-1957, Shift Assistant Manager from 1957-62, scheduling
coordinator from 1962-69, and traveling auditor from 1969-1974.
In 1974, the couple to Denver, Iowa, where Pat continued to
work at Rath Packing as manager of Internal Auditing from 1974-1982.
The couple then moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Pat worked
for Clarke Checks as an internal auditor until February of 1986,
and from 1986 until 1988 worked at Budget Rent-a-Car.
In mid -994, the couple made their home in Horseshoe Bend, where
they have currently been living.
Pat was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waterloo,
Iowa, and a member of St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church in
Horseshoe Bend.
He was active with the Horseshoe Bend Lions Club and a member

Mae Clarice Ellen Schwab, the daughter of the Rev. Charles and
Grace (Wright) Winters, was born June 10, 1909, at Klemme.
She graduated from Letts High School in Letts.
She received her teaching certificate at Parsons College in
Fairfield and taught in three country schools in Boone Township
for six years.
On May 8, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lenord W. Schwab
at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Stilson.
They farmed west of Stilson until 1968 when they retired.
In 1977, they moved into Britt. Due to ill health, she moved
to the Westview Care Center in August of 1994.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and crocheting.
Mae and Lenord enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winter and
to their cabin on German Lake in Minnesota.
She was a former member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church
in Stilson where she served as a Sunday school teacher and secretary
of the church board. She belonged to the Ladies Aid and sang
in musical groups.
She also was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt.
Mae, along with other singers, provided traveling entertainment
in the rural schools.
She is survived by her husband, Lenord Schwab of Britt; two
daughters, Lucille Carlson and her husband, Kenneth, of Wesley
and Eleanor Swan and her husband, Michael, of Vernon, Conn.;
four grandchildren, Brenda Schutter; Julie Sander and her husband,
Michael; Clarence Carlson and Sara Ellen Swan; four great-grandchildren,
Christa Sander, Kurtis Sander, Amy Sander and Derrick Sander;
a sister, Maude Neff of Lakewood, Colo.; and a niece, Kay Hanson
and her husband, Gary, of Iowa City.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Martha
Mills.

Hazel was born Oct. 9, 1903, on the family farm in rural Clear
Lake, the daughter of Soren and Johanna K. (Madsen) Villadsen.
She attended rural school in Clear Lake.
She was united in marriage with Chris Sorensen on Jan. 27, 1921,
in Clear Lake.
They farmed together north of Clear Lake. They eventually sold
the farm to purchase a grocery store located on the North Eighth
Street, Clear Lake. Chris preceded her in death on May 24, 1971.
Hazel was also employed at the Clear Lake Creamery and State
Brand Creamery. She worked at the Surf Ballroom until it burned,
then was employed at Billy's Casino in Clear Lake as a waitress.
When it was rebuilt, she returned to the Surf.
On Nov. 10, 1973, she married Marshall Friest. He preceded her
in death on Feb. 18, 1992.
Hazel was a member of the Patience Circle at Zion Lutheran Church,
where she was a member. She also was a member of Danish Brotherhood.
Her hobbies included tatting, crocheting and raising flowers.
She is survived by four sons, Donald Friest and his wife, Marge,
of Mason City; Jim Friest and his wife, Rita, of Decorah; Robert
Friest and his wife, Mary Sue, of Clear Lake, and Ken Friest
and his wife, Anita, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Ellen Steege
of Clear Lake, and Anna Freeman of Hammond, Ind.; a sister-in-law,
Lucille Villadsen of Lake Station Ind.; seven grandchildren,
Jon Friest of Indianola; Blane Friest of Waukesha, Wis.; Scott
Friest and his wife, Sharon, of Clear Lake; D.J. Friest of Decorah;
Greg Friest and his wife, Wendy, of Kensett; Jennifer Friest
of Waterloo, and Amy Friest of Mason City; five great-grandchildren,

Bert W. Luebbers was born June 28, 1911, in Papenburg, Germany,
son of Gehard and Johanna (Frerichs) Luebbers.
Bert was raised in Papenburg, Germany, and moved to Iowa with
his family at the age of 16. Ten years later, he received his
U.S. citizenship papers.
He married Kathryn O'Loughlin on Jan. 26, 1933, in Hampton.
Bert farmed from 1933 to 1956 near Geneva. They then moved to
Mason City where he worked construction for a year and then worked
at the Mason City Airport as a custodian until retiring in 1977.
He enjoyed carpentry and he loved playing the violin for dances.
Bert was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a past member
of the Knights of Columbus, the Surf Dance Club and the Mason
City Dance Club.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Luebbers of Mason City;
one daughter, Joan Luebbers and her husband, Roger Stelk of Lincoln,
Neb.; one son, B. Paul Luebbers and his wife, Mavis, of Aredale;

Harvey Vinton Wallace Brakke, 74, of 21391 Eagle Ave., died

Harvey was born on the family farm in rural Lake Mills, the
son of Halver and Tillie (Thompson) Brakke, on May 18, 1922.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Winnebago Lutheran Church,
rural Lake Mills.
Harvey attended rural school through the eighth grade and then
helped his dad with the farming which pleased his dad.
Harvey married Irene Gladys Lovick on May 21, 1943, at the Fertile
Lutheran Church, Fertile.
They continued to live on the family farm until 1951 when they
bought a farm north of Clear Lake, where he had lived ever since.
Harvey enjoyed farming, going to farm sales, vacationing in
the summer and winters with his wife and other family members,
and fishing in the summers.
Harvey always made time for visitors with a game of cards,
a light-hearted conversation and refreshments.
Harvey was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church, Fertile.
Harvey is survived by a son, Kenneth Brakke, Clear Lake; three
grandchildren, Jeff Brakke and his wife, Theresa, and their children,
Barak and Haley of Joice; Tom Brakke and his wife, Candy, and
their children, Tabitha and Sara of Clear Lake, and Lori Brakke
of Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on Jan. 14,
1992; one brother, Don; one half brother, Bob; and two half sisters,
Helen and Ethel.
He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched, especially
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed crocheting.
Mrs. Caldwell was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church,
Mason City. She was very involved with many church activities.
She was a former member of the Navy Mothers and was very active
with the PTA when her children were young.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Shirley
Alitz, Manly; Colleen Dyre and her husband, Jim, Clear Lake;
and Don Caldwell and his wife, Maggie, of Mason City; eight grandchildren,
