Janett A. Angell

MASON CITY _ Janett A. Angell, 68, of 10105 W. 86th Terrace, Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Rich Murray of First Covenant Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and until time of services on Thursday.

Memorials may be given to the Janett A. Angell Memorial Fund.

Janett A. Angell was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of William F. And Ida (Schwichtenberg) Nuehring.

Janett attended school in Rockwell and Mason City.

She married Gerald M. Angell on Oct. 20, 1946, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Janett owned and operated several small flower and gift shops in the Mason City area. The Angells moved to Overland Park, Kan. , in1989.

They were members of the First Covenant Church in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald M. Angell, of Overland Park, Kan.; children, Connie Angell of Overland Park, Kan.; Judy Angell of Mitchellville; Daryl Angell, U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany; Neal Angell of St. Joseph, Mo.; Keith Angell of Overland Park, Kan., and Nadine Neir of Overland Park, Kan.; brothers, Alvin Nuehring of Rockwell, and Lester and Elmer Nuehring of the Rockwell and Mason City area; sisters, Elsie Peterson of Mason City, Hilda Hodge of Mason City, and Irene Stowe of Mason City; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Evelyn.


Omer W. Perry

MANLY _ Omer W. Perry, 74, of 215 E. Walnut, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. John R. Kremer officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today with a Scripture service at 7 p.m. at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Omer was born April 28, 1923, the son of George and Alice (Dreer) Perry in Newport, Wash.

He received his education in the Minneapolis, Minn., school system.

In 1974, Omer was united in marriage to Juanita Vasquez in Sioux Falls, S.D.

In 1983, Omer retired from Armour where he had worked for over 30 years.

Omer was an avid card player who liked playing gin rummy, 500 and pinochle. He also enjoyed fishing in local ponds and streams. His favorite hobby was helping others with Social Security and Workmens Comp forms, and visiting with his two sons.

Mr. Perry is survived by two sons, Carl and his wife, Faye Perry of Kensett, and George and his wife, Debra Perry, of Plymouth; two sisters, Alice and her husband, Ken Omalley, of Lea Center, Minn., and Ethel and her husband, Tom Burlingham, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Carl and his wife, Clair Perry, of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Omer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juanita; one sister, Blanch Hazuka; and two brothers, Bill and George Perry.

Ronald Greiman

GARNER _ Ronald Greiman, 79, of Garner, died Monday (June 23, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Ronald H. Greiman, the son of Henry A. And Emma Louise (Schultz) Greiman was born July 20, 1917, on a farm near Garner.

He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and Garner High School.

While serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1941-44, he received the Purple Heart and Silver Star medals.

On Jan. 23, 1945, he married Leona Peterson at the Peace Reformed Church parsonage, south of Garner. They farmed southwest of Garner.

After they retired in 1984, they continued to live on the home farm.

Ron_s greatest joy was the time spent with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, living in the country and horses.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, Disabled American Veterans, Garner American Legion and the Garner V.F.W. Post of which he was the first commander.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Greiman of Garner; five children, Allan Greiman and his wife, Diane, of Fort Collins, Colo.; and their four children, Carla Pierce, Wade Greiman, Rachel Stacey and Adam Stacey; Gary Greiman and his wife, Margo, of Brighton, Colo., and their five children, Chad Greiman, Keli Sharpee, Lori Pedersen, Casey Greiman and Cody Greiman; Rhonda Schuver of Belmond and her four children, Cory Jenniges, Chayna Schuver, Chad Schuver and Clint Schuver; Rhoda Thompson and her husband, Dave, of Belmond, and their son, Brian Thompson; and Todd Greiman and his wife, Jane, of Garner, and their three children, Brett Greiman, Jared Greiman and Renee Greiman; a brother, Bernard "Bud" Greiman and his wife, Carrie, of Garner; a sister, Marjorie Finn of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Larry Schuver, Jan. 27, 1990; his father, Henry A. Greiman, Nov. 7, 1974; his mother, Emma Greiman, March 15, 1980; a brother, Richard Allan Greiman, Dec. 30, 1994; and a brother-in-law, Clair Finn, Oct. 23, 1994.

Richard H. Petersen

MANLY _ Funeral services for Richard H. Petersen, 62, of Manly, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alden, Minn., with the Rev. Jennifer Jarvis-Schroeder officiating. Interment will be in the Alden Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, Minn., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Petersen died Monday evening (Jan. 23, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City. He was 62 years of age.

Richard was born Jan. 30, 1935, in Alden, Minn., the son of Hjalmar and Vivian (Register) Petersen.

He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Alden, Minn.

He graduated from high school in Alden, Minn.

On April 11, 1956, he was united in marriage to Denise Hanson at Salem Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minn.

Richard was employed by the Hudson Foods Company for over 20 years in Albert Lea, Minn.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alden, Minn.

Richard enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, also fishing, gardening and hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Denise, of Manly; mother, Vivian Cadwell of Albert Lea, Minn.; children, Julie Ann Petersen of Forest City, Carol Mushero of Manhattan, Kan.; Mark Petersen of Manly, JoAnn Petersen of Mason City, and William and his wife, Roxanne Petersen of Mason City; grandchildren, Shannon and Jenifer Mushero, Richard, Manuel, Christi and Michael Hernandez, Johnny, Jordan and Courtney Petersen; brothers, Keith and his wife, Janet Register of Clarks Grove, Minn.; Ross and his wife, Frances Petersen of Warren, Minn., and Alan and his wife, Louise Petersen of Austin, Minn. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hjalmar in 1958; and one daughter, Cindy Jo Petersen in 1981.

Evelyn Rose Charlson

FOREST CITY _ Mrs. Willard (Evelyn) Charlson, 74, of Forest City, died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Richard Newgard officiating. Burial will be in the Madison Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Evelyn Rose Charlson was born in Titonka, on April 25, 1923, the daughter of John and Ida (Sievers) Sachau.

She attended rural school near her home and graduated from Titonka High School.

She was married to Willard Charlson on Nov. 23, 1951. The couple has made their home in Forest City for their entire married life.

Evelyn was a member of Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forest City and active in Ladies Circle.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and was a loving mother, wife and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Willard Charlson, of Forest City; a son and his wife, Elyn and Theresa Charlson, of Forest City; three daughters and their spouses, Lora and Jeff Darling, Kirkman; Natalie and Tom Koob, Madrid, and Georgia and Brad Robbins, Forest City; four grandchildren; and three nieces.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Edd P. Olson

CEDAR RAPIDS _ Edd P. Olson, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) after a long illness.

Services will be held at noon Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, 3100 F Ave. N.W., with Captain Steven Koehler of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be at 3:15 p.m. at the Williams Cemetery, Williams.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Edd Olson was born Feb. 17, 1904, in Stavanger, Norway.

He married Jeanette Walterman on Feb. 27, 1929,in Webster City. She died Dec. 30, 1984.

Edd farmed in Webster, Winnebago and Hancock counties until 1962.

He moved to Cedar Rapids and worked as a street cleaner for Cedar Rapids Street Department for 10 years. He retired in 1975.

Survivors include two sons, James Olson of Cantonment, Fla., and Jerry Olson of Grovetown, Ga.; one sister, Ingrid Miles, Forest City; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; his son, Edward; one brother, Andrew; and eight brother and sisters who resided in Norway.

A memorial fund has been established.

Sharon K. Shaw

CHARLES CITY _ Sharon K. Shaw, 54, of Charles City, died Monday (June 23, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with a rosary by Saint Bernadette Circle of the church at 3:30 p.m. and a parish wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Sharon was born Oct. 25, 1942, in New Hampton.

Survivors include her children, Michael G. Shaw of Osage; and Deborah K. Kuhlemeier of Rudd; her mother, Kathleen E. Hugeback of Charles City; a sister, Shirley Kukhan of Charles City; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Phillip Johnson Sheridan

MASON CITY _ Phillip Johnson Sheridan, 80, of 216 Third St. N.E., died Monday (June 23, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. John R. Kremer officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Phillip was born July 25, 1916, in Clear Lake, the son of George and Jessie (Johnson) Sheridan.

He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1934.

He attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1936.

He farmed in the Clear Lake area for 15 years and later owned and operated Sheridan Skelgas and Appliance in Northwood.

After moving to Mason City, he worked for the State of Iowa Liquor Commission as a store operator for 28 ½ years, retiring in 1981.

He was previously married to Carol Ludeman.

Phillip_s hobbies included reading and visiting with friends.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Mason City Knights of Columbus and Elk_s Lodge. He was a 30-year member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by five children, Elaine "Sherry" Hiszczynskyj and her husband, Dr. Roman Hiszczynskyj, Topeka, Kan.; Suzane Factor and her husband, Ron, of Genmora, La.; Cynthia Berg and her husband, Sherman, of Blair, Neb.; and twins, Richard Sheridan and his wife, Frances, of Grass Valley, Calif. , and Michael Sheridan, Topeka, Kan.; three sisters, Margaret Root, Mason City; Neva Bertagnolli of Las Cruces, N.M., and Harriet Allison of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jack J. Vitzthum

WESLEY _ Jack J. Vitzthum, 67, of Wesley, died Monday (June 23, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the Andrews American Legion Post #423, Wesley.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.

Jack J. Vitzthum was born Oct. 17, 1929, at Wesley.

Survivors include his wife, Joann, Wesley; children, Linda Thul of West Bend, Geri Schall of Dakota City, Dave Vitzthum of Dakota City, Steve Vitzthum of Bemidji, Minn., and Paul Vitzthum of Glendale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; four brothers, George Vitzthum, Whittemore; Lou Vitzthum, Pontiac, Ill.; Tom Vitzthum, Laurens, and Mike Vitzthum, Wesley; and three sisters, Rita Youngwirth, Wesley; Ruth Kaloplastos, Irmo, S.D., and Jan Ludwig, St. Benedict.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter and two brothers.

Mae Wenger

CLARION _ Mae Wenger, 90, of Clarion, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at the Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gary L. Moen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mae Wenger was born May 13, 1907, in Boxholm.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Bilharz, Omaha, Neb., and Sharon Carlson, Fort Dodge; one son, Elwin of Payette, Idaho; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elin McFarland, Boxholm.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Persis I. Pooley

GREENE _ Persis I. Pooley, 87, of 505 N. Fifth St., died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary_s Catholic Church, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary_s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reid_s Funeral Chapel, with a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural wake service followed by a rosary service.

Persis Irene Pooley was born April 8, 1910, in rural Union Township, Floyd County.

She is survived by one sister, Phyllis Rottler of Greene.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Charles T. Thompson

OSAGE _ Charles T. Thompson, 78, of Osage, died Monday (June 24, 1997) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church , with the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Story City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Champion Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Charles T. Thompson was born April 4, 1919, in Kidder, Mo.

Survivors include one wife, Mildred Thompson, Osage; two daughters, Patricia Maas of Kenosha, Wis., and Linda Thompson, Mason City; one son, Steven Thompson, Osage; one sister, Ramona Dutro, Gallatin, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, three brothers and one sister.

Alice Mae Kapping

ROCKFORD _ Memorial services for Alice Mae Kapping, 55, of Rockford, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rosemary Rhode-Frank officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Kapping passed away Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Mrs. Kapping was born April 13, 1942, in Monroe, the daughter of Wilmer and Vera (Bishop) Carbee of Rockford.

She graduated from Rockford High School.

Alice was married to Dale L. Kapping on May 19, 1967 ,in Mc Henry, Ill.

Alice has been the manager and cook for the Rockford Senior Citizens group for the last few years.

She is survived by her husband, Dale, of Rockford; a sister, Judy and her husband, Al Brungardt, of Newton; three brothers, Chuck Rankin of Monroe; Jerald Rankin, Knoxville; and Allan Carbee.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lyle Moore

CHARLES CITY _ Lyle Moore, 83, of 1205 Hildreth, died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Howser-Fillmore Mortuary, Norfolk, Neb. Burial will be in the New Lutheran Cemetery, Norfolk, Neb.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St..

Lyle Keith Moore was born July 10, 1913, in Washington, Neb.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Charles City; one daughter, Judie Pieper, Valencia, Calif.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Virginia E. Merrill

CHARLES CITY _ Virginia Merrill, 74, of 56 S. Cedar Terrace Ave., died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at home.

Elmer E. Dye

SEDALIA, Mo. _ Elmer E. Dye, 95, died Saturday (June 21, 1997) at Fair View Nursing Home.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating, with Masonic rites at the graveside.

There was no visitation. Arrangements were under the direction of McLauglin Funeral Chapel, Sedalia.

Elmer was born March 2, 1902, in Mason City, the son of Julius Henry and Elizabeth Studley Dye. He was raised and educated in Mason City, an Army veteran of World War II.

Elmer Dye was united in marriage to Edna Lois on March 13, 1920, at Garner. Prior to World War II, the Dyes lived for 22 years in Mason City, Iowa. He was employed at Decker Meat Packing Company as a chemist.

Dye was called to active duty in 1942, and remained on duty until 1954. They lived at Fort Leavenworth for five years, in the Far East (Japan and Korea, two years) and Dugway Proving Grounds, Utah, for five years. Mrs. Dye lived at or near her husband_s station except for Korea.

During his period of active duty, Col. (then Major) served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps, having had a Reserve Commission therein since 1928.

For a while, at various times, he commanded the Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah. He received extensive training in Chemical Warfare at the Army Chemical School in Maryland and Purdue University.

He also attended Army administrative courses at Washington and Lee University in Virginia and at the University of Wisconsin. During the war, Dye was often used to train Kansas and Missouri Civilian Defense Units, as well as the Nebraska State Guard.

He was stationed in Japan and helped set up the government there.

In civilian life, Dye, at Mason City, Iowa , and Waterloo, Iowa, was employed as a chemist, specialized in Stream Pollution Control in connection with treatment of meat packinghouse wastes. He was co-author of an Iowa State University Bulletin on the subject. In 1954, Dye also did research on treatment of vegetable and fruit cannery wastes with municipal sewage in California.

The Dyes lived for several months in California, then seven years in Waterloo, Iowa, before retiring and moving to the former Claude Ponder home, near Cold Springs, Mo., in July 1962.

Edna Dye passed away in May of 1976.

Elmer was united in marriage to Adella Carter in February of 1977. Adella passed away in September of 1992.

He was a member of Hancock Lodge #311, AF and AM, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, member of the York Rite Bodies in Leavenworth, and entered Abdallah Shrine Temple in 1945.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Vlademar of Sedalia, Mo.; one brother, Donald Dye of Mason City, Iowa; one granddaughter, Sharon Lee Pattschull and her husband, John W., of Garland, Texas; one grandson, Keith E. Vlademar and his wife, Terry Jean, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one great-grandson, Keith E. Vlademar II, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna Bras who died in May 1976; his second wife, Adella Carter, who died in September of 1992; and one son, Keith E. Dye, on June 1, 1944.

Persis I. Pooley

GREENE _ Funeral services for Persis I. Pooley, 87, of 505 N. Fifth St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary_s Catholic Church, with the Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary_s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. at Reid_s Funeral Chapel, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary service.

Persis Irene Pooley was born April 8, 1910, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a daughter of Charles Gilbert (Bert) and Margaret Amy (Murphy) Pooley and died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at her home in Greene of congestive heart failure.

She received her education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Greene Public School where she graduated in 1928. She attended the University of Minnesota where she received her B.A. in Library Science.

Ms. Pooley was first employed at the School of the Deaf and Blind in Council Bluffs, and later the Cleveland, Ohio, Public Library. During World War II, she was a librarian at a military base in Norman, Okla., and for the next 29 years was head librarian at the United States Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Following her retirement in 1972, she pursued her many interests including her love for world travel. She maintained homes in both Corpus Christi and Greene and was involved in civic and church affairs in both communities.

She was a longtime member of the Corpus Christi Symphony Guild, Corpus Christi Cathedral Supper Club, a longtime patron of the Corpus Christi Cathedral Concert Series and was on the first Board of Religious Education at St. Patrick_s Church.

Her community service in Greene included being a major supporter of the Greene Public Library and the Greene Historical Society. She was a faithful member of St. Mary_s Catholic Church in Greene, a 50-year member of Chapter CC P.E.O. Sisterhood, University Women, Trees Forever and the Greene Betterment.

Ms. Pooley will be remembered for her love of life and learning, her love of travel, nature conservancy and the land. She will be missed by her family and many friends.

Living family members include her sister, Phyllis Rottler of Greene; three nieces, Ann Kruse of Dumont; Morgan Rivers (Mary) and Susy Rosenblatt, both of Des Moines; two nephews, Steven Rottler of Des Moines, and Gary Rottler of Greene; five great-nieces; eight great-nephews; and two great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary F. Baxter

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. _ Mary F. Baxter was born Jan. 11, 1914 in, Boone, Iowa and died Friday (June 20, 1997) in Green Valley.

She was educated in Boone, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Roger W. Baxter on April 17, 1936.

They moved to Green Valley from Mason City, Iowa, in 1972. The Baxters have lived at the same location on Los Rincones the entire time. Currently Roger Baxter is a resident at the La Posada Assisted Living Facility.

Mary was an avid golfer, and contributor to many charitable organizations. In Green Valley, Mary Baxter and her husband, charter members of the Valley Presbyterian Church, were very active in its design and development. Mary retained her membership in her Mason City, Iowa, PEO Chapter, but was a charter member of the Green Valley Group. There was a recent announcement of the Baxters_ gifts to Coe College, in Cedar Rapids, Roger_s alma mater.

Among the organizations in Green Valley to which the Baxters have contributed generously are Green Valley Assistance Services, in which they established the Edyth Taylor "Fund for the Future"; Green Valley Food Bank, whose new building will be named for them; and, Casa de Esperanza Adult Care Center which also carries their name.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the Valley Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of the above named charities is suggested.

OSAGE _ Vernon E. Hosington, 86, of Osage, died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center.

Vernon E. Hoisington was born June 7, 1911, near Orchard, in Mitchell County.

Survivors include his wife, Luella Hoisington, Osage; one daughter, Carol Decklever, Osage; two stepdaughters, Karen Koethke of Toeterville, and Noren Fink, St. Ansgar; two sons, Lee Hoisington, Orchard, and Howard Hoisington, Orchard; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one brother, three sisters and one granddaughter.

Russell W. Ruby

MASON CITY _ Russell W. Ruby, 70, of 628 N. Harrison Ave., died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Arne Bergland officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with a Flag Folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Memorials may be given in his memory to Hospice of North Iowa.

Russell W. Ruby was born on May 18, 1927, at Emmetsburg, the son of Lester J. and Bessie B. (Peebles) Ruby.

He received his education at Spencer and Everly. He later moved to the Hanlontown area where he farmed with his father.

Mr. Ruby took his basic training in the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kan.

On his furlough home, he married Ocella Smeby on May 17, 1951, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Kensett.

In June of 1951, while stationed in Japan, Mr. Ruby was selected to attend Pole Line School in Iwo Jima. He was later stationed in Korea as a pole lineman from which he then transferred to 2nd Combat Engineers. He was in Korea from June 1951 until October of 1952.

Mr. Ruby_s last year in the service was spent at Fort Sill, Okla., as a drill sergeant training new recruits. He received his discharge on Jan. 16, 1954.

He returned to this area and farmed for two years southeast of Forest City. He and his wife later moved to Mason City, where he was employed at the Armour Plant. When Armour closed, he was employed for six months at City Hall as a janitor and then 2 ½ years as a meter man for the Mason City Police Department.

When the new Armour plant opened, he returned to work there and remained there until retirement in 1988. He was employed by Armour for 35 ½ years.

During his retirement, he loved gardening, going to auctions, collecting antiques, camping, traveling and woodworking. He especially enjoyed fishing on the yearly trip up north with his family.

Mr. Ruby was a Boy Scout troop leader and proud that both of his sons made Eagle Scout. He coached Little League baseball for many years.

He was a member of the VFW, Post #733 and of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1956. He taught the fifth grade Sunday school class for four years, was a member of the Board of Deacons for three years and ushered until recently.

He will be sadly missed by many friends and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Ocella Ruby of Mason City; one daughter, Linda Schlicht and her husband, Sam, Mason City; two sons, Craig Ruby, Vancouver, Wash., and his son, Nathan, of Los Animas, Colo.; and Scott Ruby and his wife, Jennie, Las Vegas, Nev., and their children, Jason, Jessica and Stephanie Ruby of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, Jim Ruby and his wife, Bettie, Forest Hill, La.; three sisters, Dorothy Berschman and her husband, Joe, Buffalo Center; Betty Johnson, Northwood; and Delores Rinden and her husband, Marvin, Joice; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Bessie Ruby; two brothers, Don and Eldon Ruby; and one nephew, Duane Ruby.

THORNTON _ Lealton "Lee" E. Reynolds, 62, of 7956 Finch Ave., Thornton, died Tuesday (June 24, 1997) at Three Fingers Campground in Forest City, where he was working.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John_s Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with Father Robert Towner officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., and again from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Lealton was born on Dec. 19, 1934, at Rockford, Iowa, the son of Claude and Ruth (Clare) Reynolds.

He attended Mason City High School and was proud to receive his GED diploma after 25 years in 1975.

Following high school, he was employed in construction work in the Mason City area. He was a lugger at IBP for 10 years and then worked for Mason City in the Sanitation Department, then at the Clear Lake Bakery for several years.

Over the past 12 years, he has owned and operated A-1 Construction Company and was working at the campground when he suffered a heart attack.

Lee was united in marriage to Sharon Blanc on May 28, 1954, in Austin, Minn.

Lee received his 25 year sobriety chip from AA on Feb. 1, 1997.

He was a member of St. John_s Episcopal Church.

Lee was such a constant supporter of wildlife that he constructed a wildlife refuge on his property. He also practiced catch and release when he fished in Canada and the local area streams and lakes.He was a member of Pheasants Forever and enjoyed hunting for pheasants and deer.He and his wife spent their summers camping at Three Fingers Campground.Lee was a stone-faced bluffer when playing cards with his family and enjoyed winning bets on cards and the Superbowl from his children and grandchildren.

He loved to be with his grandchildren and watching them grow up. One of his favorite pastimes in the winter was watching "Joe Montana" and the 49er_s. He was a bowling team member for Dyna Klean and later sponsored his own A-1 Construction team which won the 1996 City Tournament and he received the Sponsor of the Year award.

Lee will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sharon, of Thornton; his four children who include his daughter, Sherry and her husband, Mark Sandvik, of Thompson, Iowa; his sons, Randy and his wife, Laurie, of Galway, N.Y.; Tim and his wife, Lisa; and Jeff Reynolds, all of Estherville; his parents, Ruth Nalbach of Kingman, Ariz.; and his father, Claude and his wife, Shirley Reynolds of Mason City; three sisters, Mary Brooke, Kingman, Ariz., Roylene Hudson, and RoyAnn Osborn, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; six favorite grandchildren, Keila and her husband, Andy Buffington, Jennifer Reynolds, Lee Reynolds, Justin Dox Reynolds, Colette Dox Reynolds, and Coton Reynolds; and one great-granddaughter, Many Buffington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She married Curtis Forbes on Feb. 11, 1927, at Galena, Ill. They made their home in Dodgeville, Avoca, and Bridgeport, Wis., before moving to Osage.

Norma was active in the United Methodist Church and in her circle.

She enjoyed music, sewing, gardening and her family.

L.J. Arndt Jr. was born on March 25, 1953, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd John Arndt Sr. And Dorothy A. (Bebee) Arndt of Nora Springs, Iowa.

He attended schools in Nora Springs, Iowa.

L.J. enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969, spending three years in Japan.

He married Rita Hayes in 1974. They were divorced in 1983.

Survivors include two children, Jessica and Byron Arndt, Temple, Texas; his mother, Dorothy Smith and her husband, Roland R., Mason City, Iowa; two sisters., Mrs. Neal (Deanna) Anderson, Plymouth, Iowa, and Mrs. Ray (Neoma) Smidt, Grafton, Iowa; one brother, Cyrus Arndt and his wife, Cathy, Plymouth, Iowa; three stepsisters; one stepbrother; and nieces and nephews.

Gesina worked as a nurses aide in both homes and hospitals. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a member of Church of the Master Presbyterian in Mesa, Ariz., and a member of Ladies Aid in the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center.

She is survived by her husband, George R. Swalve of Mesa, Ariz.; five sons, Lewis J., and his wife, Donna Swalve, of Hayfield, Arlo G., and his wife, Lucille Swalve, of Hinton, Allan R., and his wife, Sharon Swalve, of George, Lloyd L., and his wife, Linda Swalve, of Spring Grove, Minn., and Cecil D. Helen was born July 17, 1923, in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Fred W. and Hilda L. (Niewoehner) Buldhaupt. She graduated from Sumner High School, attended Upper Iowa University and received her nurses training at NIACC. Helen married Clarence H. Fedeler on June 16, 1948, in Sumner. They moved to Mason City in 1950. Helen worked as a nurse at Good Shepherd Health Center and for 11 years at the I.O.O.F. home, retiring in 1988. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Do-Days ladies (quilt makers for Lutheran world relief), Queen Rebekah Lodge, L.P.N. Association and volunteered at Hospice, the Discovery Shop, AARP, KCMR radio and was a poll attendant for local elections and volunteered for other social services agencies.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy J. Roit and husband, Marvin, of Ohiowa, Neb.; son David L. Fedeler and wife, Jane, of Manly; seven grandchildren: Marilouise, Luther, Kristine and Jessica Roit and Amanda, Robert and Cody Fedeler; one sister, Evelyn Damrow and husband, Tom, of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Henry Bulhaupt and wife, Helen, of Swaledale, and Lawrence Buldhaupt and wife, Nancy, of La Crescent, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Mary Buldaupt of Seattle, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

DUMONT _ Fred "Fritz" Hopkes, 76, died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at Maple Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, with the Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Fred "Fritz" Hopkes was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Butler County.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Rosemary Hinderacker of Nevada; two stepsons, Don Campbell and John Campbell, both of Hampton; one sister, Lucille Miller of Allison; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother.

Marguerite A. Maxwell

MASON CITY _ Marguerite A. Maxwell, 66, of 123 13th St. N.E., died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at St. Mary_s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. today at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E. Marguerite was born on July 18, 1930, in Rockwell, the daughter of Bernard J. and Mary Catherine (McCarthy) Fitzgerald. She graduated from St. Joseph Catholic Church School. She moved to Mason City in 1943. For 28 years she worked on the clerical staff at SIEG Auto Parts. Marguerite was united in marriage to William W. Maxwell on Aug. 4, 1990, at his home in Mason City. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Women of the Moose. Marguerite enjoyed playing golf with her husband and traveling to Tucson, Ariz., for the winters.

Marguerite will be sadly missed by her husband, Bill, of Mason City; her children, who include one daughter, Pamela, and her husband, Robert Murray, of Tucson, Ariz., and two sons, Gregory Tenney of Tucson and Steven and his wife, Cynthia Tenney, Blaine, Minn.; three sisters, Genevieve and her husband, Harold Witt of Nora Springs, Alice and her husband, Gary Ebeling, of Humboldt, and Mary Jane and her husband, Kenneth Moss, of Dyersville; six grandchildren, Robert, Jonathan, Benjamin and Vanessa Tenney and Lucas and Liam Murray; her stepchildren, Muriel and her husband, Dennis Kofoot, of Mason City, and William II and his wife, Betty Maxwell, of Des Moines; four stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Bernard Fitzgerald.

Helen J. Fedeler

MASON CITY _ Helen J. Fedeler, 73, died Friday (June 27, 1997) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth Street S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson and the Rev. Rodney Holmberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to St. James Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers.

Helen was born July 17, 1923, in rural Fayette County, the daughter of Fred W. and Hilda L. (Niewoehner) Buldhaupt. She graduated from Sumner High School, attended Upper Iowa University and received her nurses training at NIACC. Helen married Clarence H. Fedeler June 16, 1948, in Sumner. They moved to Mason City in 1950. Helen worked as a nurse at Good Shepherd Health Center and for 11 years at the I.O.O.F. home, retiring in 1988. She was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Do-Days Ladies (quilt makers for Lutheran World Relief), Queen Rebekah Lodge and the L.P.N. Association, and volunteered at Hospice, the Discovery Shop, A.A.R.P. and K.C.M.R. radio, was a poll attendant for local elections and volunteered for other social services agencies.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy J. Roit and husband, Marvin, of Ohiowa, Neb.; son David L. Fedeler and wife,,Jane, of Manly; seven grandchildren, Marilouise, Luther, Kristine and Jessica Roit, Amanda, Robert and Cody Fedeler; one sister, Evelyn Damrow and husband, Tom, of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Henry Buldhaupt and wife, Helen, of Swaledale, and LaVerne Buldhaupt and wife, Nancy, of La Crescent, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Mary Buldhaupt of Seattle, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence, in 1992; and brother, Leo.

Elsie Helm

WODEN _ Elsie Helm, 93, died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

The family suggests memorials to the First Presbyterian Church.

Elsie Helm was born May 13, 1904, near Woden.

Survivors include one daughter, Marcene Wheeler of Kansas City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, one granddaughter, parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Leo M. Frankl

ALGONA _ Leo M. Frankl, 79, died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecelia_s Catholic Church with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites provided by the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the Wilson Funeral Home, with a guild rosary at 3 p.m., and a scripture reading at 7:30 p.m.

Leo M. Frankl was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Algona.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Lydia Frankl of the Good Samaritan Home, Algona; and caretakers, Richard and Arlene Reising and Jim and Pat Albert, all of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.

BURT _ William M. "Bill" Knoll, 76, died Sunday (June 29, 1997) at the Algona Manor Care Center, Algona.

Bertha F. Schutter

BUFFALO CENTER _ Bertha F. Schutter, 81, died Sunday (June 29, 1997) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home.

Bertha F. Schutter was born Aug. 26, 1915, near Buffalo Center.

Survivors include three sons, Ken Schutter of Buffalo Center, Duane Schutter of Forest City and Ray Thomas Schutter of Houston, Texas; three daughters, Joyce Mager of Gilbert, Ariz., Nancy Madetzke of Chandler, Ariz., and Betty Davids of Buffalo Center; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Henry Hofbauer of Buffalo Center, Howard Hofbauer of Ventura, Donald Hofbauer of Leland and John Hofbauer of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and three sisters, Ruth Harris of Yuma, Ariz., Dorothy "Billie" Weaver of Buffalo Center and Marjorie Roths of Garner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, one granddaughter, two brothers, and three sisters.

Willene Eckhardt

SHEFFIELD _ Willene Eckhardt, 64, died Sunday (June 29, 1997) at the Franklin General Nursing Facility, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grarup Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Willene Eckhardt was born Nov. 12, 1932, in Quenem, Kan.

Survivors include her mother, Ila Hase of Stillwater, Okla.; three daughters, Anita Goeke of Castilia and Barbara Bartelt and Marla Eckhard, both of Sheffield; two sons, Craig Eckhardt of Hampton and Eric Eckhardt of Sheffield; three sisters, Illene Streeter of Topeka, Kan., Connie Bunney of Stillwater, Okla., and Bonnie Hess of Parsons, Kan.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father.

James D. Nelson

THORNTON _ James D. Nelson, 56, died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Pleasantview Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Grarup Funeral Home.

James Dean Nelson was born on Sept. 6, 1940, on his parents] farm near Thornton, the son of Clarence and Rose (Nicolet) Nelson. He attended the Thornton school system, graduating with the class of 1959. He attended the University of Iowa for a short time before starting to farm in 1961. He was united in marriage to Shirley Arlene Burma of Thornton on July 30, 1961, in the St. Paul American Lutheran Church of Thornton. They made their home farming near Thornton. James enjoyed reading and visiting with family and friends, and they enjoyed traveling, having been to Europe and Hawaii.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Thornton; one daughter, Sherry Hansen and her husband, Jeff, of Clear Lake; two sons, Douglas Nelson and his wife, Linda, of Clear Lake, and Darren Nelson of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Sarah, Andy and Eric Hansen and Alex and Ben Nelson; and three brothers, Marvin Nelson and his wife, Jonnie, of Parker, Colo., LaVerne Nelson and his wife, Eleanor, of Clear Lake; and Willard Nelson of Opportunity Village, Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Ann Lang

NEVADA _ Mary Ann Lang, 78, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (June 27, 1997) from complications of leukemia and diabetes at Rolling Green Village, Nevada, where she had been a resident since 1991.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick_s Catholic Church with the Rev. George Kovalik and the Rev. John Herzog officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held Monday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Chet Ryan Mortuary. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Mary Ann Lang was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Ivan) Kovalik. She was married to Peter Angelo on March 30, 1941, in Minneapolis, and John Lang in June of 1960, in Mason City. She was a housekeeper for the Hanford Hotel in Mason City. Memberships included Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Grandmother_s Club. She was active in Senior Citizens in Mason City. Her interests included her family, handwork and baking for others. She enjoyed many years of traveling with her sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane, and her husband, David Punke, of Nevada; two grandsons, James Punke of Davenport and Steven Punke of Iowa City; a brother, the Rev. George Kovalik, Minneapolis; and three sisters, Agnes Nosko, Elizabeth Rhiney and Margaret Fedora, all of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter Angelo, in 1953; her husband, John Lang, in 1971; two brothers, Joseph and Nicholas; and a son, James Angelo in 1947.

Max C. Adams

MARBLE ROCK _ Max Clayton Adams, 69, died Saturday (June 28, 1997) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery.
