Beard==========================

RUDD _ Foster D. Beard, 78, of 1709 Glass Ave., Rudd, died Monday (June 9, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation begins after 4 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, and continues one hour prior to funeral services at the church on Wednesday.

The family suggests memorials to the Dialysis Unit at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Foster was born July 21, 1918, in rural Cerro Gordo County, southwest of Nora Springs, the son of Walter and Bessie (Mains) Beard. He attended rural school in Nora Springs and continued on with his education at Nora Springs High School, graduating from there in 1936. Foster was raised on a farm and continued to farm after high school.

Foster married and continued farming along the Shellrock River near Nora Springs. While farming, he worked at the Nora Springs Creamery, and also did carpentry work on the side. Later in his life he started collecting antique farm toys, trains, miniature horses, hitches,and operated an antique store in Rudd. He also enjoyed going to auctions, thresher days, steam engines days and caring for his two ponies.

Foster was a former member of the saddle club, a member of the Elks Lodge, Mason City, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Nora Springs.

Foster is survived by his two daughters, Wendy Jean Beard of Whitewood, S.D., and Carlene D. Beard of Manly; one sister, Ruth Merryman and her husband, J.C. ``Sid__, of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Beard of Moline, Ill., and Mary Beard of Floyd; one grandchild, Amy Jean Grady of Rockford; and one great-grandson, Ethan Craig Grady of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harry and Robert Beard.

Gladys Mikelson

BELMOND _Gladys Mikelson, 98, of Belmond, died Saturday (June 7, 1997) at the Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Tenold Funeral Chapel with Stan Watne officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and will continue until time of service on Thursday.

Gladys Mikelson was born May 9, 1899, in Grant Township, rural Clarion.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Mikelson of Webster City, and Merle D. Mikelson of California; and one daughter, Donna Belle King of Dallas, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two brothers and one sister.

Ardys (Anderegg) Butler

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. _ Ardys (Anderegg) Butler, 77, of Overland Park, passed away Thursday (June 5, 1997) at the Baptist Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at the Village Presbyterian Church. The D.W. Newcomers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ardys was born March 17, 1920, in West Bend, Iowa, the first child of Harold and Rosetta (Williams) Anderegg. She attended school in the West Bend area and graduated from West Bend High School in 1936. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa She taught rural schools in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, for four years. She then entered civil service and was assigned as an instructor at the Army Air Force Base in Lincoln, Neb.

While in Lincoln she met her husband, Robert Butler, and they were married on March 31, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pa. After her husband was discharged from the service, they settled in the Kansas City area. Ardys was the mother of three children, Robert Jr. of Fairway, Kan., Richard of Coconut Creek, Fla., and Janet Burnight of Austin, Texas. She was a grandmother of six.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, Bob; sons, Robert Jr. and Richard, daughter, Janet, and her grandchildren. Also, three brothers, Russell Anderegg of Mason City, Iowa; Darvin of Charles City,, Iowa; and Raymond of Sheffield, Iowa; and four sisters, Phyllis Ferrier of Clear Lake, Iowa; Joyce Marzen of Marble Rock, Iowa;and Ramona Schneck and Mary Peter, both of Sheffield, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Rosetta Anderegg; and a granddaughter, Annaliese Burnight.

John E. E. Ellis

MASON CITY _ John E. E. Ellis, 73, of Mason City, died Sunday (June 8, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer of First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg, with military rites provided by V.F.W. Post #2295.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the John E. E. Ellis Memorial Fund.

John E. E. Ellis was born July 30, 1923, in Emmetsburg, the son of Elmore S. And Caroline L. (Scammon) Ellis. John attended and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1941. John served during World War II with the 695th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C, European Theatre, from November 1942 to December 1945. After the service, John graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines with a business degree. John worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for several years, and in recent years drove school bus for Huffman Transportation. John enjoyed his grandchildren, golfing, and was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed sharing his special talent with all.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mason City, Ernest Lodge #399 and Masonic Temple in Emmetsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Ellis of Mason City; three daughters, Julieanne Ellis Paustian and her husband, Terry, of Marshalltown, Suzan Ellis-Whalen of Mason City, and Caroline J. Westwood and her husband, Stanley, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two stepsons, Robert W. Mathias and his wife, Becky, and Jan R. Mathias, both of Fort Wayne, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Abbie Ulfers of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Catherine Wilson; and one granddaughter.

Donald A. Rice

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. _Donald A. Rice, 74, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Saturday (June 7, 1997) at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Messinger Mortuary Chapel, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale. There will be a visitation one-half hour before the service.

Donald A. Rice was born in Auburn, Iowa, and moved to Arizona 18 years ago from Iowa. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of World War II. He was retired and had worked for Air Services International, leasing and maintaining helicopters.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and of American Legion Sipe-Peterson Post #44, both in Scottsdale.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. Rice of Scottsdale; daughters, Linda Rice of Phoenix, Ariz., Lu Ann and her husband, Darrell Brown, of Spokane, Wash., and Kay C. and her husband, Jim Zahn of Tempe, Ariz.; sons, D. Steven Rice of Scottsdale, and Rusty and his wife, Judy Morris, of Tempe; and nine grandchildren, Justin Roths, Kyle Peterson, Brandon Rice, Erica Rice, Tyler Zahn, Jamie Zahn, Candace Morris, Mattison Morris, and Eli Brown.

Donald Marts

HAMPTON _ Donald Marts, 92, of Hampton, died Monday (June 9, 1997) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Private funeral services will be held with the Rev. Larry McCann officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Marts was born July 5, 1904, in Polk County.

Survivors include three sisters, Nellie Larson and Shirley Marts, both of Lakewood, Calif., and Norma Stonebrook of Hampton; and one brother, Orval Marts of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two infant sisters.

Myra Aileen (York) Eastman

CLEAR LAKE _ Myra Aileen (York) Eastman, 82, longtime Clear Lake resident, died Saturday (June 7, 1997) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., is in charge of arrangements.

There will be a memory box at the funeral home and church for you to share your memories of Myra with the family.

The family of Myra Aileen (York) Eastman has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, or to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, in her memory.

Myra Aileen (York) Eastman was born on Oct. 9, 1914, in Clear River, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Emmeline Nettie (Reinhart) York. She attended and received her education in the Warroad, Minn. Schools, graduating from Warroad High School in 1932, and began teaching country school at the age of 16. She graduated from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1938, and taught school in Williams and Staples, Minn. While teaching in Staples she met her future husband, Donald Spilman Eastman, and was united in marriage on Sept. 20, 1946, and made their home in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death in February 1985. Myra was a substitute teacher in Clear Lake for many years, and was also a Brownie Scout leader. She also helped her husband, Don, at the Grain Elevator during harvest. In more recent years she had been active in the Methodist Church Altar Guild, Ruth Circle, Clear Lake Women_s Club, Craft Club, Methodist Lunch Bunch, and the Double F (Fat Fighters) Club. She was also a member of the Tina Rebekah Lodge #105 of Clear Lake.

Survivors include her daughter, Miriam Eden and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; stepdaughter, Millus Charlson of Waterloo; sister, Ada Gifford Simons of Rosedale, Minn.,; brother, Harold York of Bemidji, Minn.; niece, Linda York Bowman of Bemidji; Minn. ; sister-in-law, Violet White Larson of Clear Lake; step-grandchildren, Steve Charlson of Waterloo, Anne Hatoum and her husband, Nassir, of West Des Moines; Carolyn Ferry and her husband, Mark, of Fort Dodge, Susan Charlson of Fort Dodge, and Chris and Lori Eden, Brett and Kim Eden, and Jason Eden, all of Mason City; as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Myra was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Earl and Annie Eastman; husband, Donald Spilman Eastman in February 1985; stepson, Earl James Eastman; brother, Alan York; sisters-in-law, Carroll Baago and Carol York; brothers-in-law, Clarence Gifford, E. Wesley Simons, and Robert White Sr.; nephew, Robert White Jr.; and step-grandson, Scott James Eden.

Myra will be joyfully remembered and sadly missed.

Lawrence Henry True

BRISTOW _ Lawrence Henry True, 71, of Bristow, died Tuesday (June 10, 1997) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bristow United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kate Bell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont.

Lawrence Henry True was born April 5, 1926, in Butler County.

Survivors include his wife, Lela True of Bristow; one son, Scott True of Bristow; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

David J. Patrick

MASON CITY _ David J. Patrick, 69, of 543 18th St. S.E., died Thursday (June 5, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating.

Friends may visit from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. David's family will greet friends at the funeral home at 2 p.m. until departure for the graveside services on Monday.

David J. Patrick was born July 20, 1927, at Charles City, the son of Valoris J. and Mabel (Treese) Patrick. He received his early education at Mason City schools. In 1943, his family moved to Cody, Wyo, where he received his high school education.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1946, the same year he returned to the Mason City area. Attending officer cadet school, he graduated with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Patrick then spent a year of active duty in Germany. In Mason City he served as acting commander of the Army Reserve Unit until 1964, having attained the rank of Captain.

On Aug. 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Janelle Sheka at First Christian Church, Mason City.

Mr. Patrick was employed by V.J. Patrick Plumbing until 1952, and later by the United States Post Office, retiring there in 1982.

He established his own company, Hawkeye Printing and Tile in 1955, and also did carpentry and construction work, from which he retired in 1982.

David enjoyed all types of carpentry work, fishing and pheasant hunting. He actively assisted with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from 1960 to 1968, and was a coach for Little League Baseball.

He was a lifetime member of AmVets and Veterans of Foreign War, Post #733.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Janelle F. Patrick, Mason City; one son, Michael J. Patrick and his wife, Kathy L., Washington; one brother, William V. Patrick and his wife, Margaret, Mason City; two sisters, Betty M. Whitney and her husband, Fayne, Galt, Calif., and Bonnie P. Turner, Cedar Rapids; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pat C.; and one sister, Bea Marie.

Arthur C. Halverson

MASON CITY _ Arthur C. Halverson, 84, of 13392 Thrush Ave., rural Mason City, died Tuesday (June 10, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Nils C. "Chris" Hellevik officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, KCMR or Hospice of North Iowa.

Arthur Halverson was born March 20, 1913, the oldest son of Clarence and Anna (Suby) Halverson. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1931. After graduation, Art worked at the Sugar Beet plant north of Mason City, and also various farm jobs. He married Lucille Erickson on Aug. 19, 1934, in Mason City. They farmed north of Ventura and south of Clear Lake before moving to their present home, where they have lived for 53 years, raising their family and farming before he retired in 1975. Art and Lucille enjoyed traveling and fishing. Art was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the Portland Elevator Board.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Lucille, of Mason City; son, Rich Halverson and his wife, Andi, of Mason City; three daughters, Linda Naumann Jolas and her husband, Tom, of Mason City, Dixie Shanks of Mason City, and Joan Deardeuff and her husband, Les, of Rockwell; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leroy Halverson and his wife, Nelda, of Clear Lake, and Irving Halverson and his wife, Mary, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Lucille's parents, Ed and Bessie Erickson; daughter, Donna; grandson, David Shanks; son-in-law, Royce Shanks; and an infant granddaughter.

Eldon Attig

TITONKA _ Eldon Attig, 79, of Titonka, died Wednesday (June 11, 1997) at the Muse - Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church.

Grant Seymour Chapman

BELMOND _ Grant Seymour Chapman, 86, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (June 10, 1997) at the Belmond Community Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Fineran officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Grant was a "home town boy" living his entire life in Belmond. He was born to Edward and Julia Ann Wilson Chapman on June 25, 1910, on the family farm just south of town. He moved to town at the age of 10 with his five brothers and three sisters to 1st St. S.E. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1928, where he played football for three years.

Grant was united in marriage with Lucile Klassi of Renwick, on Aug. 6, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home at 116 3rd St. S.E. and have lived there their entire married life. Grant owned and operated a DX Bulk Gas & Oil Business. He also did general trucking, was a painting contractor and drove school bus for the Belmond Community Schools, retiring in 1975. Grant enjoyed fishing and gardening. He and Lucile also enjoyed dancing, going to the Surf Ballroom every Friday night from 1937-1967. They also enjoyed square dancing and doing an advertisement for John Deere.

He is survived by his wife, Lucile A. Chapman; his daughter, Karen L. Chapman of Denver, and her fiance, Dick Hansen; a brother, Harvey Chapman of White Bear Lake, Minn.; and a sister, Sylvia Soma of Mason City. Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Stephen J. Stadtlander and his wife, Pam, of Trabuco, Calif., and Susan Kazarian and her husband, Kory, of Waterloo; and four great-grandchildren, Jesseca, Thomas and Sarah Stadtlander of Trabuco, Calif.; and Austin Grant Kazarian of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Grant in death were his mother and father; and siblings, John, Charles, Daisy (Dorothy) Kringle, Edward, Elmer and Garnet.

Shirley Mae Nichols

CLARION _ Shirley Mae Nichols, 67, of Clarion, died Tuesday (June 10, 1997) at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church with the Rev. Wayne Droessler officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday and a Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m.

Shirley Mae Nichols was born July 10, 1929, at Whittemore.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene; children, Robert E. of Cedar Falls; Royann M. Rutledge of Algona; Ronald J. of Hiawatha, Kan.; Rochelle T. Graham of Burt; Rita K. Becker of St. Joe, and Rebecca Steiner of Clarion; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; six brothers, Ralph, Mike and Donald, all of Cedar Rapids, and Bob, Stanley and Tom, all of California; and three sisters, Carol McGuire and Ida Rose Barone, both of Algona, and Alice Flock of La Crosse, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and three sisters.

The Rev. Keith E. Klemm

WODEN _ The Rev. Keith E. Klemm, 49, of Woden, died Tuesday (June 10, 1997) as a result of an auto accident northwest of Woden.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Curtis Miller as celebrant, assisted by the Rev. LeVerne Streich, the Rev. Dan Christensen and the Rev. John Sersland.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Woden.

On Saturday, funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manawa, Wis., with the Rev. Evan Dieck as officiant. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in Little Wolf Cemetery near Manawa, Wis.

The family requests memorials be made out to St. John's Lutheran Church and Grant Lutheran Church.

Keith Erwin Klemm, the son of Erwin Casey and Edna (Prellwitz) Klemm, was born May 29, 1948, at Clintonville, Wis. He was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church at Bear Creek, Wis., and confirmed and ordained at Zion Lutheran Church in Manawa, Wis. He graduated from Little Wolf High School in Manawa, Wis., in 1966, from Wartburg College in Waverly in 1970, cum laude, and received his Masters of Divinity degree from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque in 1975. Keith taught and studied at a mission seminary in Neuendettelsau, Germany, for one year. On May 31, 1975, he married Kathryn Dunlay at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein. He served churches in Audubon, Kimballton, two church parishes at rural St. Olaf, and in 1986, moved to Woden, where he was currently pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church and Grant Lutheran Church, northeast of Woden. He enjoyed his Bible, family, grandchildren, golfing and writing.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served on the board of North Iowa Mental Health Center.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Klemm of Woden; three children, Kristi Wills of Forest City, and Aaron Klemm and Nathanial Klemm, both of Woden; three grandchildren, Alyssa, James and Anthony; his mother, Edna Klemm of Manawa, Wis.; his brothers and sisters, Barbara Forsythe and her husband, Gene, of Manawa, Wis.; William Klemm and his wife, Harriet, of Manawa, Wis,; Roland Klemm and his wife, Jan, of Oshkosh, Wis.; Sherry Pomeroy and her husband, Dan, of Manawa, Wis.; and Cindy Levezow and her husband, Mark, of Manawa, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Adam Klemm, in 1983; and his father, Erwin Klemm in June of 1976.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1946, the same year he returned to the Mason City area. Attending officer cadet

school, he graduated with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Patrick then spent a year of active duty in Germany. In Mason City he served as acting commander of the Army Reserve Unit until 1964, having attained the rank of Captain.

On Aug. 15, 1948, he was united in marriage to Janelle Sheka at First Christian Church, Mason City.

Mr. Patrick was employed by V.J. Patrick Plumbing until 1952, and later by the United States Post Office, retiring there in 1982.

He established his own company, Hawkeye Plumbing and Tile in 1955, and also did carpentry and construction work, from which he retired in 1982.

David enjoyed all types of carpentry work, fishing and pheasant hunting. He actively assisted with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from 1960 to 1968, and was a coach for Little League Baseball.

He was a lifetime member of AmVets and Veterans of Foreign War, Post #733.He was a member of the First

Christian Church, Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Janelle F. Patrick, Mason City; one son, Michael J. Patrick and his wife, Kathy L.,

Washington; one brother, William V. Patrick and his wife, Margaret, Mason City; two sisters, Betty M. Whitney

and her husband, Fayne, Galt, Calif., and Bonnie P. Turner, Cedar Rapids; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pat C.; and one sister, Bea Marie.

Lawrence W. Oberhelman

CORWITH _ Lawrence W. Oberhelman, 84, of Corwith, died Thursday (June 12, 1997) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Eldon George Attig

TITONKA _ Eldon George Attig, 79, of Titonka, died Wednesday (June 11, 1997) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karl Schiltz officiating. Interment will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Eldon George Attig was born Dec. 12, 1917, at Luverne.

Survivors include his wife, Lila, of Titonka; and one sister, Gertrude Richter of Titonka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

John G. Johnson

GREENE _ Funeral services for John G. Johnson, 80, of 13509 Ivy Ave., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Randy Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

John G. Johnson was born on Sept. 3,1916, near Mason City, a son of George A. and Flossie (Berends) Johnson, and died Wednesday (June 11, 1997) as a result of a farming accident at his farm in rural

Greene.

He was baptized in the Christian faith at Mason City and confirmed as a young man at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in rural Butler Center. He received his education in the rural Jefferson Township Schools.

On April 27, 1947, he was united in marriage to Erma Kollman at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at

Vilmar. To this union was born one son, Bruce Henry. The couple farmed near Greene all their married life.

He loved the land and to watch the crops grow. He was always interested in livestock.

John and Erma enjoyed taking long rides throughout the country side. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on April 27, 1997. He was a longtime faithful member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vilmar.

Living family members include his loving wife, Erma, of Greene; one son, Bruce and his wife, Deb, of Greene; one stepgrandson, Danny Williams of Illinois; three sisters, Katie Eilderts and Frances Johnson, both of

Clarksville, and Mildred Johnson of Parkersburg; seven brothers, Harry, Alfred and Lawrence, all of Allison,

Stauffer and Herbert of Parkersburg, Fred of Clarksville, and Vern of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Everett and George.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the John G. Johnson Memorial Fund in

care of the family.

Roy R. Miller Sr.

OSAGE _ Roy R. Miller Sr., 81, of Osage, died Friday (June 13, 1997) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Champion Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery, with military rites by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be held after 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was born May 25, 1916, in Osage.

Survivors include one son, Roy Miller Jr. of Osage; three sisters, Helen Willey of Minneapolis, Minn.; Perna Virchow, Minneapolis, Minn., and Cleo Mitchell of Osage; two brothers, Willard "Bill" Miller of Dresden, Tenn., and Oral Dean Miller of Casper, Wyo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one great-granddaughter.

Reka VanHorn

SHEFFIELD _ Reka VanHorn, 82, of Sheffield, died Thursday (June 12, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Michael Ploeger officiating. Burial will be in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Reka was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Franklin County.

Survivors included one brother, John VanHorn of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Shirley Whitney

WEST COVINA, Calif. _ Shirley Whitney, 66, of West Covina, died Thursday (June 12, 1997) at a California hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Rose Hill Mortuary Chapel, West Covina.

Shirley was born Oct. 13, 1930 ,in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Iona (Thompson) Baker and Charlie Baker.

Mrs. Whitney had been employed at several Mason City, Iowa, businesses prior to moving to California. In California she worked for All State Insurance Company. She had done volunteer work for the West Covina school system and was a member of a woman's club in West Covina.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald A. Whitney of West Covina; two sons, Matthew and Andrew , at home; four sisters, Mrs. John (Sarah) O'Donnell of Mason City, Iowa; Luella O'Connor and Frank Perry of Florissant, Mo., Mrs. Jerry (Janice) Keith of Rome, Ga., and Bonnie Baker of Bloomington, Minn.; four brothers, Marvin Baker and wife, Lillian ,of West Hills, Calif., LeeRoy Baker and wife, Mona, of Ackley;, Iowa; Jerome Baker and wife, Mary, of New Braunfels, Texas, and Bruce Baker and wife, Beverly, of Culpeper, Va.; a sister-in-law, Gloria Baker of Decatur, Ala.; many nieces and nephews; and cousins, Dan and his wife, Regan Roberts of Marshalltown, Iowa; Sherry and her husband, Tom Taylor of Iowa City; and James and his wife, Lyla Thompson of St. Peter, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Belberoff, her parents, and one brother, Roger "Toby" Baker.

CORWITH _ Lawrence William "Johnny", Oberhelman 84, of rural Corwith, died Thursday (June 12, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Robert-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Lawrence was born on March 15, 1913, at Manson.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie, of rural Corwith; three sons, Richard and Dale Oberhelman both of rural Corwith, and Randy Oberhelman of Nashua; two daughters, Nancy Hines of Tacoma, Wash., and Shirley Petschauer of Carnarvon; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and three sisters, Florence Kelso of Fort Dodge, and Ardella Will and Luella Lenz both of Algona.
