Phyllis J. Scoles

CHARLES CITY

Phyllis J. Scoles, 74, 400 Clark St., died Thursday (June 19, 1997) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Milwaukee and Hulin Streets, with the Rev. Debra Lincoln officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Phyllis Joy Scoles was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Garner.

Survivors include her husband, James S. Scoles, Charles City; three children, James C. Scoles, Charles City; Carol Krausman, Parker, Colo., and Jon Scoles of Mason City; two brothers, Ken Sullivan of Cedar Rapids, and

Miles Sullivan of Clifton, Va.; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider memorials established to Trinity United Methodist Church or Heart to Home Hospice.


Roy Petersburg

LAKE MILLS _ Roy Petersburg, 92, of 501 S. Washington, died Wednesday (June 18, 1997) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver Creek Cemetery, rural Joice.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, in his memory.

Roy Lester Petersburg was born Aug. 7, 1904, in Worth County.

Survivors include his wife, Carmen of Lake Mills; one son, Ronald Petersburg of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Sandra Petersburg, Kansas City, Mo., and Rosemary Schirm, Kennett Square, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Martin Harms

BELMOND _ Martin Harms, 81, of Belmond, died Tuesday (June 17, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, with the Rev. Jim Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery, with military rites by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Martin Harms was born April 5, 1916, in Latimer.

Survivors include his spouse, Jennie of Belmond; one daughter, Millie Thompson, Belmond; one son, Dennis Harms, Belmond; one sister, Grace Lamfers, Kanawha; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, Taus Harms of Belmond, Reno Harms of Garner, and Herman Harms, Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Alice G. Christensen

LATIMER _ Alice G. Christensen, 91, of Latimer, died Wednesday (June 18, 1997) at the Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanual United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Richard Zulauf officiating. Burial will be held in St. John_s Cemetery, rural Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Alice G. Christensen.

Alice G. Christensen was born Oct. 12, 1905, in Humboldt County.

Survivors include one son, Chris Christensen, Latimer; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Madalyn Papot, Huntsville, Ala.; and one brother, Howard Rasmussen, Clarion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and one sister.

John M. Eekhoff

KANAWHA _ John M. Eekhoff, 74, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (June 18, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church, with the Rev. G. David Daley officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home.

John M. Eekhoff was born March 28, 1923, at Wellsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Eekhoff, Kanawha; one daughter, Holly Lang, Kanawha; two sons, Kevin Eekhoff of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Vern Eekhoff of Sanborn; 16 grandchildren; one sister; and five brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and one grandson.

Viola Gross

MASON CITY _ Mrs. William N. (Viola) Gross, 90, of Vine Grove, Ky., formerly of Mason City, died Monday (June 16, 1997) at her home in Vine Grove, Ky.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where other arrangements are incomplete.

Richard E. "Eli" Waters

NORA SPRINGS _ Richard E. "Eli" Waters, 75, of 108 Fourth St. N.W., died Thursday (June 19, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Nora Springs Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Greg Lugn officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the American Legion, HDS#449.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Richard E. "Eli" Waters was born on Feb. 18, 1922, at home in Floyd County, the son of Frank and Mary Emma (Stiller) Waters. Growing up, he attended Rock Grove and Prairie Center schools.

On Aug. 12, 1943, he was united in marriage to Mary E. "Betty" Bishop at the William Allen home in Rudd.

Eli and Betty farmed in the Nora Springs area for many years; Eli also did maintenance work at the nursing home and operated his own repair service.

He enjoyed clock and watch repair, especially cuckoo clocks.

Eli loved telling jokes and playing musical instruments, including the guitar, harmonica and the jew_s harp.

He was a big fan of bluegrass music and a member of the Society for Preservation of Blue Grass Music in America.

He also loved camping and was a 28-year member of the Wigwam Wagon Camping Club, which won camping club of the year in 1983.

Eli was a member of the Nora Springs Christian Church, serving in the past as a deacon and as a trustee for the church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Mary Emma Waters, Nora Springs; his wife, Mary E. "Betty" Waters, Nora Springs; three children, Rose Mary Anderson and her husband, Donald, Mason City; Richard L. Waters and his wife, Lorri, Owatonna, Minn.; and Donald G. Waters and his wife, Pat, Oelwein; eight grandchildren, Craig Anderson, Randy Anderson, Lori Koresh, Tim Waters, Tammy Ries, Jason Waters, Brent Waters and Nick Waters; one stepgrandchild, Trisha Miller; three great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Charley F. Waters and his wife, Ruth, Nora Springs; and Junior Gayle Waters and his wife, Lorie, Plymouth; one sister, Cora Hibner and her husband, Jim, Ames; one sister-in-law, Gladys Waters, Rockford; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Waters in 1969; one brother, Clayton in 1981; one niece, Shari Hibner in 1986; and two infant great-nephews.

Viola Gross

MASON CITY _ Mrs. William N. Gross, 90, of Vine Grove, Ky., formerly of Mason City, died Monday (June 16, 1997) at her home in Vine Grove, Ky.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Elmwood-St.Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.

Viola Gross was born Oct. 24, 1906.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Billings, Vine Grove, Ky.; one son, Thomas Gross of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three sisters, Cora Vawter, Winnebago, Minn.; Evelyn Parks, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Arlo Betts, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; three brothers, Bill Remmers, Minneapolis, Minn., Emory Remmers, Sheldon, and Floyd Remmers, Sandborn; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William N. Gross; her daughter, Sister Barbara Marie; two sisters; and two brothers.

Glenn Arthur Schultz

WEST BURLINGTON _ Glenn Arthur Schultz, 67, of West Burlington, died Sunday (June 15, 1997) at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Donald D. Hoornstra officiating. Burial was in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Lunning Chapel, Burlington.

He graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, and Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque; and received his master_s degree from Mankato State University.

Memorials may be given to the Phebe Hospital in Liberia, in care of the Messiah Lutheran Church, in memory of Glenn Arthur Schultz.

Glenn Arthur Schultz was born April 16, 1930, in Grafton, the son of Lloyd and Hazel (Braun) Schultz.

He was united in marriage to Katie G. Schwantje on June 25, 1955, in Dubuque.

He was a pastor and teacher on staff at Southeastern Community College, Burlington, and later worked for General Electric, Burlington.

He had been a pastor at Regent, N.C.; Avoca, Neb., and Bessie, Okla.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Burlington.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Schultz, Burlington; daughter, Dr. Barbara S. Schultz Shivapour ,M.D., of Burlington; one son, Darrell, Cache, Okla; daughter. Lori Lafayette, Wapello; and one son, Brian Schultz, New York City, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Bert C. Meyer

BUFFALO CENTER _ Bert C. Meyer, 90, of Buffalo Center, died Friday (June 20, 1997) at the Titonka Care Center.

Caroline F. Swan

FOREST CITY _ Caroline F. Swan, 90, of Forest City, died Friday (June 20, 1997) at the Salsbury Baptist Home, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St.

Caroline Fredericka Swan, the daughter of Garrelt and Anna (Kuschel) Rieken was born March 26, 1907, on a farm in Hardin County.

At an early age, she moved with her family to a farm near Woden.

She attended the rural schools of Bingham Township and graduated from Crystal Lake High School. She continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

On Oct. 6, 1928, she married Max Steinfeldt. They lived on farms in Hancock and Winnebago counties.

Caroline worked at Stitchcraft in Forest City where she retired in 1972.

On Sept. 15, 1972, she married Donald Swan in Forest City. They made their home in Forest City.

Due to ill health, she moved to the Salsbury Baptist Home at Charles City in July 1996.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City.

She is survived by her children, Iris Pitkin of Charles City; Dick Steinfeldt and his wife, DeLores ,of Forest City; and Eloise Hines of Independence; a daughter-in-law, Gilda Steinfeldt of Buffalo Center; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Cora Gerdes of Cedar Falls; a sister-in-law, Lena Rieken of Woden; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Swan; son, Charles in 1994; a grandson, Steven Steinfeldt; a great-great-granddaughter, Abby Buhr; two sisters, Anna Green and Marie Rieken; and two brothers, Carl Rieken and Richard Rieken.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Sunnyside Memory Gardens near Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Richard L. Covault was born June 30, 1928, at Grinnell.

Survivors include his wife, Jan of Charles City; two sons, Michael Covault of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Jonathan Covault of Willington, Conn.; one daughter, Linda Wood, Hannibal, Mo.; his mother, Julia Shaw of Grinnell; four grandchildren; three stepbrothers, Jim Shaw of Denver, Colo.; John Shaw of Moline, Ill., and Vance Shaw of Ottumwa; and a stepsister, Jo Ann Lindenmeyer of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his father, stepfather and one grandson.

Bert C. Meyer

BUFFALO CENTER _ Bert C. Meyer, 90, died Friday (June 20, 1997) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Bergman officiating. Burial will be in Olena Mound Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Winter Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Bert C. Meyer was born Nov. 18, 1906, in Titonka.

Survivors include one daughter, Arlys Meyer of Sherburn, Minn.; one son, Jack Meyer of El Paso, Texas; one sister, Della Rippentrop of Titonka; one brother, Wesley Meyer of Elmore, Minn.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.

MASON CITY _ Genevieve Holm 81, of 418 S. Tyler Ave., died Thursday (June 19, 1997) at her home.

Dr. Bob Jongewaard, M.D.

WESLEY _ Funeral services for Dr. Bob Jongewaard, M.D., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Corwith High School Gym with the Rev. Jahn Horgen and the Rev. Ted Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Wesley.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home. Dr. Jongewaard died Friday (June 20, 1997) at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Dr. Bob was born on Jan. 13, 1922, at Sialkot City, Penjob, India. He came back to the States in 1926, and was a graduate of the Jefferson High School in 1939. Bob was a 1945 graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa at Iowa City. Dr. Jongewaard has practiced in the Wesley area for the last 36 years. He practiced in Scranton and Jefferson before coming to Wesley in 1961. Bob was married to Helen Supplee in June of 1943, in Wheaton, Ill., by the Rev. Billy Graham. Dr. Jongewaard was active in the Evangelical Free Church in Wesley, and was a fireman and served on the Corwith Wesley School Board.

Dr. Jongewaard is survived by his wife, Helen, of Wesley; three daughters, Mrs. Diana Horgen of Denver, Penn., Mrs. Ruth Scheufele of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Narola Grady of Davenport; two sons, Dr. Richard Jongewaard of Sioux Center, and Dr. Bill Jongewaard of Sheldon. There are 14 grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Jean Farr of Magalia, Calif., Mrs. Eleanor Brown of Pahrump, Nev., and Mrs. Louise Jongewaard of Los Angeles, Calif.

Dr. Jongewaard was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and one brother.

Arthur H. Salz

MASON CITY _ Arthur H. Salz, 70, of 780 S. Pierce Ave., died Friday (June 20, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony at the graveside provided by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until noon Monday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Wesley United Methodist Church.

Arthur H. Salz was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Stacyville, the son of John and Anna (Wiesbrock) Salz. Art attended schools in Stacyville, and then worked on his brother-in-law_s farm. Art served with the Army Air Force after World War II, from Feb. 1, 1946, until July 18, 1946. Art married Betty Vikturek on June 24, 1951, in Manly. Art owned and operated Manly Plumbing and Heating in Manly from 1954 until 1969. He then worked at Plumb Supply in Mason City from 1969 until he retired in February, 1991, as office manager. Art served as assistant fire chief in Manly, and was a Boy Scout leader. After retirement, Art was an avid golfer.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Elks Lodge in Albert Lea, Minn.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Bernhardsen and her husband, Ben, of Rochester, Minn.; one son, Ted Salz Sr. and his wife, Lori, of Garner; one granddaughter, Samantha Salz of Garner; two grandsons, Ted Salz Jr. of Garner, and Bjorn Bernhardsen of Rochester, Minn.; five sisters, Marie Walsh, Ronnie Miller, and Joan Toye, all of Osage, Gerri Albrecht of Fairmont, Minn., and Frannie Krotaska of Evansdale; two brothers, Bob Salz of Casper, Wy., and Jack Salz of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Al.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a rosary service at 7 p.m. at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.

Elmer E. Dye

SEDALIA, Mo. _ Elmer E. Dye, 95, died Saturday (June 21, 1997) at Fair View Nursing home.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. There will be Masonic rites at the graveside.

There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of McLauglin Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Dye was born March 2, 1902, in Mason City, the son of Julius Henry and Elizabeth Studley Dye. He was raised and educated in Mason City and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was stationed in Japan and helped set up the government there, similar to the United States government. He was a chemist all of this life, a member of Hancock Lodge No. 311, AF and AM, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. He was employed at Decker Meat Packing Company as a chemist.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Vlademar of Sedalia, Mo.; one brother, Donald Dye of Mason City; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna Bras, who died in May 1976; his second wife, Adella Carter, who died in September of 1992; and one son, Keith E. Dye, on June 1, 1944.

Janett A. Angell

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. _ Janett A. Angell, 68, of 10105 West 86th Terrace, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 North Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Arne C. Bergland officiating. Burial will be in the Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today and until noon on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Genevieve Holm was born July 6, 1915, in Elmore, Minn., the daughter of Andrew Murray and Mary Schneider. Genevieve moved with her family to Mason City as a child. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1934.

Genevieve worked in Mason City and in Chicago for a few years. She returned to Mason City and married Clarence Holm on Sept. 11, 1946, in Lu Verne. She helped farm with her husband on the farm near Rockwell and also worked at the Rockwell Care Center as a cook. She also worked for Mercy Hospital as a dietary aide for almost 10 years and then at North Iowa Medical Center for three years. Genevieve also worked for Amicare for a couple of years, retiring in 1986.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting and embroidery. She also taught Sunday school and was in the choir at St. Peter_s Lutheran Church, Rockwell, and at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, where she was a member.

Survivors include two daughters, Leona Walker of Mason City and Jan Martin and husband, John, of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, Dick Holm of Mason City and Stanley "Butch" Holm of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, William Goad, of North Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1977 and three sisters, Florence, Hazel and Iva.

Arthur H. Salz

MASON CITY _ Arthur H. Salz, 70, of 780 S. Pierce Ave., died Thursday (June 19, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony at the graveside conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Friends may call until noon today at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Arthur H. Salz was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Stacyville, the son of John and Anna (Wiesbrock) Salz. Art attended schools in Stacyville, and then worked on his brother-in-law_s farm. Art served with the Army Air Force after World War II, from Feb. 1, 1946, until July 18, 1946. Art married Betty Vikturek on June 24, 1951, in Manly. Art owned and operated Manly Plumbing and Heating in Manly from 1954 until 1969. He then worked at Plumb Supply in Mason City from 1969 until he retired in February, 1991, as office manager. Art served as assistant fire chief in Manly, and was a Boy Scout leader. After retirement, Art was an avid golfer.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Elks Lodge in Albert Lea, Minn.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Bernhardsen and her husband, Ben, of Rochester, Minn.; one son, Ted Salz Sr. and his wife, Lori, of Garner; one granddaughter, Samantha Salz of Garner; two grandsons, Ted Salz Jr. of Garner and Bjorn Bernhardsen of Rochester, Minn.; five sisters, Marie Walsh, Ronnie Miller and Joan Toye, all of Osage, Gerri Albrecht of Fairmont, Minn., and Frannie Krotaska of Evansdale; two brothers, Bob Salz of Casper, Wyo., and Jack Salz of Mason City; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Al.

Lois Ethel Elwood Stewart was born Sept. 5, 1921, at Floyd.

Joseph Huinker

GARNER _ Joseph Huinker, 63, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at Palo Alto County Hospital , Emmetsburg.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday with a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. all at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Harriett E. Stangler

MASON CITY _ Harriett E. Stangler, 99, formerly of the Regency Apartments, died Friday (June 20, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph_s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. John R. Kremer officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123, Second St. S.E., with a 7 p.m. rosary service.

The family requests that those who wish may direct memorials to the Harriett E. Stangler Memorial Fund.

Harriett was born Oct. 11, 1897, the daughter of Thomas and Alice (Ewing) Paul in Rockwell.

On Jan. 18, 1915, Harriet was united in marriage to Joseph Stangler in Manly. For many years, she worked as a dietary aide at the Park Hospital, Mason City.

During Harriett_s leisure time, she did needle work, especially tatting and embroidering, and nurturing her many plants and flowers. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family.

Harriett was a member of St. Joseph_s Catholic Church.

Mrs. Stangler is survived by four daughters, Marguerite Hanson of Mason City; Elizabeth and her husband, Morris Gregory, of Mason City; Joanne and her husband, Robert White, of Ventura, and Harriett and her husband, Richard Krutsinger, of Clear Lake; one son, Donald and his wife, Patricia Stangler, of Mason City; one daughter-in-law, Eunice Stangler of Mason City; two sons-in-law, Lyle Anderson of Mason City, and Everett Hanson of Forest City; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.

Harriett was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; two daughters, Lorraine "Babe" Anderson,and Dorothy Hanson; two sons, Edward and Joseph Stangler; three brothers, Eggbert, Milo and Edward Paul; one daughter-in-law, Hazel Stangler; one son-in-law, Earl Hanson; one granddaughter, Nancy Stangler; and one great-grandchild.

Lyle D. Griffin

CHARLES CITY _ Services for Lyle D. Griffin, 67, of Charles City, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John_s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Mr. Griffin passed away suddenly on Saturday (June 21, 1997) at West Union, while attending a family gathering.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.

Lyle D. Griffin, son of Edward M. And Florence E. (Hansen) Griffin, was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Charles City.

He attended the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City and was a member of St. John_s Lutheran Church.

Lyle was united in marriage to Betty Ann Swartzrock on Jan. 7, 1950, in Austin, Minn.

He was employed by Sperry Transportation, White Farm Equipment and Swartzrock Implement.

Scouting was one of Lyle_s major interests. He was scout master of Troop 101 in Charles City, active in the Order of the Arrow, served as a cook for many adult and boy functions at both of Winnebago_s summer camps, was active in the Wood Badge program and other Scout-related fields.

Lyle was also active in the Cedar Valley Steam Engine Club of Floyd County.

He was an avid trout fisherman and liked to make fishing trips to the Decorah area with his children.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Betty A., of Charles City; and children, Gordon and his wife, Theresa of Thomson, Ga.; Garry and his wife, Lori, of Charles City; Debra Griffin and friend, Stu Auringer of Charles City; Kenneth and his wife, Lise of Rudd; Denise Griffin of Charles City; Danny and his wife, Lori, of Charles City; Tammy and her husband, Daniel Bogges of Chetek, Wis.; his mother, Florence E. Griffin of Charles City; brothers, Harold and his wife, Doris Griffin, of Marshalltown, Everett Griffin of Charles City, and Jess and his wife, Terry, of Charles City; sisters, Arlene and her husband, Al Lynes of Lansing; Margaret Schwickerath of New Hampton, and Phyllis and her husband, Roger Bluhm of Waverly; and 14 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and two brothers, Raymond and Lawrence.

Joseph Huinker

GARNER _ Joseph Huinker, 63, of Garner, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Joseph Arnold Huinker, the son of Arnold and Julia (Sloan) Huinker, was born July 29, 1933, at St. Lucas.

After graduating from St. Luke_s High School in St. Lucas, he served his country in the U.S. Army for two years. Joe then enrolled in Hamilton_s Business College in Mason City, where he received a degree in accounting. He worked as a bookkeeper at Sieg_s Auto Supply Co. in Mason City.

On Oct. 15, 1960, he married Judith Lee Cottington at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

They moved to Garner in 1962 where he was employed as a sales manager by Massey-Ferguson. In March 1997 he retired after 35 years with the same company. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren with their many activities. Golfing and woodworking were his favorite hobbies.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a former board member of the Garner Golf & Country Club, a former Garner Lions member, belonged to the Garner American Legion Post and had served on the Garner Volunteer Fire Department for over 25 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Darsi Wellick and her husband, Tom, of Garner and their three children, Justin, Jordan and Jenna; his son, Daniel Huinker and his wife, Shawn, of Garner; and their four daughters, Kelli, Kristin, Katlyn and Karah; a special friend, Marlene Prohaska of Garner; his sister, Evelyn Molumby and her husband, James, of Decorah; a brother, Eugene Huinker and his wife, Doris, of St. Lucas; a sister-in-law, Josephine Huinker of Ossian; his father-in-law, Donald Cottington of Crystal Lake; in-laws, Donna and Harold Gabby, of Atlanta, Ga., and Douglas and Sue Cottington, of Emmetsburg; and many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Huinker, April 2, 1988; his parents; and a brother, Louverne Huinker.

David R. Harris

WATERLOO _ David R. Harris, 49, of Waterloo, died Monday (June 23, 1997) at home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Oppold-Hagarty Funeral Home, Waterloo, with burial at noon in the Osage Cemetery, Osage.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and for one hour before services on Friday. There will be no visitation on Thursday.

He was born June 26, 1947, in Streeter, Ill., son of Emery N. And Faye Hensley Harris.

He married Peggy Schwab on Aug. 5, 1989, in Waterloo.

He was a school teacher with the Waterloo Public Schools for 27 years, teaching at Logan Intermediate School for the last 25 years, where he also coached wresting, football and track. He had been a state wrestling referee for the last 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of Waterloo; a son, Matthew of Waterloo; two stepsons, Marc and Tim Coonradt, both of Waterloo; his father and stepmother, Emery and Mary Harris of Fort Madison; and two stepsisters, Janice Moran of Burlington and Sharla Gerdom of Lomax, Ill.

Adeline Ternes

LEDYARD _ Adeline Ternes, 72, of Ledyard, died Sunday (June 22, 1997) at St. Luke Lutheran Care Center.
