Cathryn Ida Bennett

IOWA FALLS _ Cathryn Ida Bennett, 48, of Iowa Falls, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, Alden, with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Buckeye Cemetery, Buckeye.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Surls Funeral Home, 505 Stevens St., Iowa Falls.

Cathryn Ida Bennett was born June 3, 1949, in Eldora, the daughter of Clifford and Esther (Bessman) Nicholson.

She attended Alden schools, Ellsworth College and Hamilton Business College.

She was a student at Ellsworth College and Buena Vista College at the time of her death.

She was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ in Alden.

She is survived by her partner, Deneen Lechner, Iowa Falls; a son, Daniel Bennett, Iowa Falls; a daughter, Lacinda Bennett, Iowa Falls; a daughter-in-law, Janette Bennett of Eldora; four grandsons, Ryan Mitchell, Eldora, Johnathan Bennett, Iowa Falls, Stephen Strange, Iowa Falls, and Christopher Bennett of Hampton; and two granddaughters, Samantha Bennett and Christina Bennett, both of Eldora; her mother, Esther Nicholson, Alden; two brothers, Clifford Bruce Nicholson, Alden, and Arthur Nicholson, Hampton; and three sisters, Janice Swires, Eldora, Laura Hunt, Britt, and Martha "Toots" Crosby, of Wassau, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford Nicholson, and a son, Christopher Bennett.

Leo Jessen

HAMPTON _ Leo Jessen, 82, of Hampton, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John_s Lutheran Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in St. John_s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Leo Jessen was born Sept. 10, 1914, in Franklin County.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Jessen, Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

George Rudolph Glawe

CORWITH _ George Rudolph Glawe, 88, of rural Corwith, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Linda Hansen Bibb officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Corwith.

George Rudolph Glawe was born Feb. 25, 1909, on a farm north of Corwith.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of rural Corwith; one daughter, Muriel Imlay, Clear Lake; and two sons, Cecil Glawe, of rural Corwith, and Dennis Glawe, Wesley; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandson, one brother and four sisters.

Theron Jacobson

NORA SPRINGS _ Theron J. "Johnnie" Jacobson, 49, of Nora Springs Care Center, formerly of Floyd, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at the St. Mary_s Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after suffering an apparent aneurysm.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church, Floyd, with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church of Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Jessie Formanek

GARNER _ Jessie Formanek, 93, died Saturday (July 26, 1997) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in St. John_s Cemetery, Duncan. Cataldo Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Formanek was born May 6, 1904, in rural Britt.

Survivors include one sister, Bessie Falada of Clear Lake; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Formanek of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven sisters, and two brothers.

Kathlyn Lynne Lovejoy

MASON CITY _ Kathlyn Lynne Lovejoy, 1 month old daughter of Kevin and Sara Lovejoy of 525 N. Massachusetts Ave., died Saturday (July 26, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Richard "Dick" Nesje

WATERVILLE, Minn. _ Richard "Dick" Nesje, 73, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at St. Mary_s Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour_s Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Duane Everson of St. Paul Lutheran Church on German Lake in Waterville, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. until time of services Monday at Our Saviour_s Lutheran Church. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to the Richard "Dick" Nesje Memorial Fund.

Richard Nesje was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Rasmus R. and Anna B. (Flo) Nesje. Dick graduated from Mason City High School, and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He married Eleanor Leaman on June 29, 1947, in Mason City. Dick worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years and then retired to German Lake in Waterville.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Nesje of Waterville; sons, David Nesje and his wife, Lori, of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Richard Nesje II and his wife, Donna, of Mason City; daughter, Mary Beth Lamberton and her husband, Jeff, of Camanche; six grandchildren, Russell, Jamie and Lindsay Nesje, and Robert, Travis and Nicole Lamberton; sisters, Margaret Dodge of Mason City, Florence Hunt of Des Moines, and Pearl Harrington of Mecosta, Mich.; and brother-in-law, C.J. Engstrom of Nisswa, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Floyd; and two sisters, Beatrice and Carol.

Eugenia (Jeanne) Pearl Clark

CLEAR LAKE _ Eugenia (Jeanne) Pearl Clark, 59, departed her loved ones on Friday (July 25, 1997) at her home in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday.

The family of Eugenia (Jeanne) Pearl Clark has requested that memorial contributions be made in her memory.

Eugenia (Jeanne) Pearl Clark was born on Dec. 15, 1937, in Rush City, Minn., in Isanti County, the daughter of Charles and Margie (Chelberg) Wieland. She was baptized on June 12, 1938, in Rush Lake Lutheran Church, Rush Lake, Minn., and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on May 20, 1951, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lake Johanna, Minn. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis, Minn. She was united in marriage to Thomas Clark on Jan. 4, 1957, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. After their marriage they lived in Bloomington, Minn., where she worked as a cashier for the Country Club Grocery Store from 1960 until 1973, moving to Clear Lake and in 1974 she began working for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake on the Cottage Staff at the Oakhill Cottage, and later as the Food Service Director for Opportunity Village until 1995.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cribbage, canasta, loved to cook for family and friends, and watching her grandchildren play hockey, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear lake.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Thomas Clark, of Clear Lake; her children, Ken Clark and his wife, Liz, of Worthington, Minn., Jodi Robbins and her husband, Tim, of Waterloo, Tommy Clark and his wife, Sonya, of Clear Lake, and Jami Harringa and her husband, Steve, of Olathe, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Mitchell (16), Kelsi (12), Ben (10), Cory (10), Joshua (4), Casey (4), Khrystin (3), Emily (2), Carli (1½), Breckie (1); three sisters, Charlene of Emily, Minn., Linda and her husband, Terry, of Milaca, Minn., and Amy Jo of Emily, Minn., as well as other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Brecky.

Harvey Coe Jr.

FIFTY LAKES, Minn. _ Harvey Coe Jr., 77, died Thursday (July 24, 1997).

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Swanburg, Minn., with the Rev. Marlys Korman officiating.

Memorials may be given to Faith Lutheran Church, HCR 77, Box 300C, Pine River, Minn. 56474.

Arrangements are with the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn.

Harvey Coe Jr. was born the youngest of five children on Feb. 26, 1920, to Harvey and Myrtle (Whitman) Coe on the family farm in Clear Lake.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He loved to fish and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Harvey was a man of many hats, his talents ranged from woodworking and metalworking to being an accomplished softball pitcher.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl, a son, David and Shari Coe of Clarksville, Ark.; a step-daughter, Jean and Frank Lee of Alexandria, Va.; two step-sons, Jerry and Janet Bollman, andLynn and Lois Bollman, both from Minneapolis; a grandson, Brian Coe of Des Moines; seven step-children; a sister, Ethel Johnson of Hudson; and nieces and nephews from both families.

Leonard E. Tjaden

CHARLES CITY _ Leonard E. Tjaden, 80, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a public Masonic service at 8 p.m. conducted by the St. Charles Masonic Lodge #141 AF & AM of Charles City. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Lois Johanna Hook Biebesheimer

MASON CITY _ Lois Johanna Hook Biebesheimer, 75, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at Rochester, Minn. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Hill officiating.

Lois Johanna Hook Biebesheimer was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Pleasant Valley township, rural Grundy County, the daughter of Bernard and Johanna (DeBuhr) Hook.

She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1938, and attended the University of Iowa, studying vocal music and art. She also taught in the rural Grundy County school system for two years. She married Jerome F. Biebesheimer on May 29, 1942, in Iowa City, and they moved to Mason City in 1948.

Mrs. Biebesheimer was known in Mason City and beyond as a vocalist. While a student at the University of Iowa, she was the first undergraduate student ever invited to sing as a soloist with the University Symphony Orchestra. In performances of Handel_s "Messiah," she sang with soloists such as Harold Stark (University of Iowa) and Andrew White (Drake). She was a frequent soloist with the Mason City Municipal Band, the Matinee Musical, the First Presbyterian Church Choir, and sang at many Mason City weddings and funerals.

She was a long time member of the League of Women Voters, a committee member and docent at the Charles H. MacNider Museum, a member and past president of PEO, a member and past president of Matinee Musical, and a member and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jerome F. Biebesheimer of Mason City; her five children and their families, Johanna, of Berkeley, Calif.; Jerome, Jr. and his wife, Arlene, of Clinton, S.C.; Gretchen King of Mason City; Christina of Washington, D.C.; and Charles and his wife, Lisa, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Michael Biebesheimer, Anastasia and Genevieve King, and Lea Biebesheimer; a brother, Paul Hook of Pleasanton, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Henry Hook; and sisters, Esther Burt, Genevieve Cone, and Carol Hook.

Eva H. Carlson

ST. ANSGAR _ Eva H. Carlson, 94, formerly of Mona, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Mona Lutheran Church with the Rev. Russ Wangen officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Eva H. Carlson was born Dec. 3, 1902, in Mona.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Verdie Carlson of Lyle, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and four sisters.

Theron "Johnnie" Jacobson

Theron John Jacobson was born Dec. 23, 1947, in Charles City, the son of Theron Vern and Maude (Kelly) Jacobson. He was raised in Floyd where he attended elementary school. He then attended special education school in Osage. He resided in Floyd with his parents until he and his mother moved to the Nora Springs Care Center in May of 1995. Johnnie was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. He was made an honorary member of the Floyd Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to go fishing, especially at the family_s cabin in Minnesota.

Living family members include his guardians, Ed and Connie Hejna of Floyd; two half-brothers and their wives, Vern and Dorothy Jacobson and Virgil and Shirley Jacobson, all of Charles City; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Mooberry of Charles City, and Mildred James and her husband, Ewell, of Nauvoo, Ala.; and relatives who were close to Johnnie, Norma and Roger Olson of Mesa, Ariz., Richard and Mary Mullen of St. Louis Park, Minn., Florence Kelly of Nora Springs, Andrew and Ruby Mullen of Charles City, and Elizabeth Brinkman of Mason City; and the many dear friends Johnnie made at the Nora Springs Care Center.

He was preceded in death by his father who died Dec. 9, 1961, in Osage; and his mother who died June 14, 1995, in Nora Springs.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the elevator fund at Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd.

Julie (Haas) Fleischer

ST. ANSGAR _ Julie (Haas) Fleischer, 89, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at St. Mary_s Hospital, Rochester, Minn., after a short illness.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Gonnerman officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Julie was born June 25, 1908, to Stephen and Christina Haas in Szulok, Hungary. She grew up in St. Ansgar and graduated from St. Ansgar High School. She married the late Alfred John Fleischer on May 1, 1935. They made their home in Wells, Minn. for 20 years. They moved to Sauk Rapids, Minn., where they owned and operated the Farmers Feed and Grain.

Julie recently returned to her hometown of St. Ansgar, coming from St. Cloud, Minn. While living in St. Cloud she operated a beauty shop in Cokato, Minn. She was a member of St. Augustine Parish in St. Cloud. Julie enjoyed driving her friends to and from their various appointments. She also enjoyed growing championship African Violets. She will be missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred John Fleischer; and grandson, Capt. Bradley K. Fleischer, USMC.

Julie is survived by two sons, Ron and his wife, Cindy, of Bakersfield, Calif., and Phil and his wife, Noi, of St. Ansgar; grandsons, Steve and Mark Fleischer of Bakersfield, Scott Fleischer and his wife, Victoria, of Apopka, Fla., Jill and Keith Pickett of Bakersfield, and Rhea Fleischer; great-grandchildren, Kristalyn, A.J. and Maria Fleischer of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif.; one sister, Magdalin Haas of St. Ansgar; sister-in-law, Hertha Fleischer of Winterset; nieces, Marjorie Stewart, Bernice Sprunger and Carol Parker; and nephew, Jim Fleischer.

William Francis Nettleton

CEDAR FALLS _ William Francis Nettleton, 71, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at Cedar Falls Health Care Center from complications of Parkinson_s Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Jim Secora officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls from 1 to 8 p.m. today, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m.

Bill was born July 18, 1926, in Greene, the son of Louis and Katherine (Loughren) Nettleton. He served his country in the United States Army in the 11th Airborne Division during World War II. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teacher_s College (U.N.I.) in Cedar Falls and his master of arts degree from Drake University in Des Moines. On Jan. 26, 1957, he was united in marriage to Ave Claire Brendsel in Sioux Falls, S.D. He taught at Alden High School, was principal at Cedar Valley School in Farnhamville, and finally for 20 years was principal at North Cedar Elementary School in Cedar Falls, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Cedar Falls AmVets Post 49, and St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls.

He is survived by his wife of Cedar Falls; one son, David of Katy, Texas; two daughters, Cheryl Hinde of Storm Lake, and Sheila Combs of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clair, James and Gene Nettleton, all of Greene; and three sisters, Marjorie Mayer and Eleanore Hebert, both of Marion, and Mary Ann Anrand of Maitland, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister in infancy.

Julia V. Gelder

BRITT _ Julia V. Gelder, 80, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. David Daley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Julia, the daughter of Bertus and Hulda Schmidt DeNeui, was born July 27, 1916, on a farm near Wellsburg. When she was four years old she moved with her family to Hardin County near Steamboat Rock, where she grew up.

On March 30, 1937, Julia was united in marriage with Henry Gelder at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Steamboat Rock. After their marriage, they farmed in the Wellsburg area and later in the Buffalo Center, Forest City and Woden areas. In 1959, they moved to Britt. Julia worked at Winnebago in Forest City and the Westview Care Center in Britt. She loved to fish and play bingo. Julia was also an avid walker. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very important to her. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Britt.

Julia is survived by three daughters, Darlene Heginger and her husband, Carl, of Klemme, Beverly Nielsen and her husband, Roger, of Britt, and Joice Hill and her husband, Spencer, of Kanawha; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marcella Potthoff and her husband, Ray, of Jesup.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers.

Wanda Wessels

FORT UPTON, Colo. _ Wanda Wessels, 56, formerly of Belmond and Clear Lake, died Thursday (July 24, 1997) at the Brighton Care Center, Brighton, Colo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Ken Fineran officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church on Tuesday. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Wessels was born Oct. 16, 1940, in Clear Lake.

Survivors include her father, Henry Pals, of Mason City; two daughters, Brenda Johnson and Lori Steerman, both of Fort Upton; one son, Steven Wessels of Fort Upton; one sister, Patty Enabnit of Iola, Kan.; four brothers, Ronald Pals of Mason City, Marvin Pals of Sheffield, Jerry Pals of Mason City, and Allen Pals of Warsaw, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1979; her mother; and one sister.

Estelle A. Jones

MASON CITY _ Estelle A. Jones, 88, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Wednesday afternoon (July 23, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E. Officiating will be Father Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church. Inurnment will be next to her husband at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Estelle was born on Feb. 11, 1909, in Ipswich, S.D., the daughter of Patrick N. and Maude (Taylor) Conley. She received her education in Maquoketa, and following her graduation she attended Bayless Business College in Dubuque. She was then employed by the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States and worked in Cedar Rapids until she was transferred to Mason City in 1933. After the closing of the Mason City office she worked as a bookkeeper for Gildner_s Clothing Store and Park Clinic. Estelle was united in marriage to Dr. Harold K. Jones, a Mason City dentist, on June 5, 1945, in St. Paul, Minn. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, was a volunteer for 10 plus years with the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her leisure time with activities such as playing bridge, sewing, and she played the piano and organ.

Estelle is survived by her step-daughter, Ruth Ann Jones Bregante, of San Mateo, Calif.; three step-grandchildren, Michael Bregante of San Mateo, Karen Church of Hayward, Calif., and Jane Dettner of Bend, Ore.; two step-great-grandchildren, Jessica Bregante and Erin Dettner; and two special cousins, Ann and her husband, Larry Fuess of Stafford, Texas, and Olivette Fuess of Memphis, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in September, 1965; one step-daughter, Phyllis Schaumberg in 1996; and three sisters.

WODEN _ Irene V. Schmidt, 69, died Friday (July 25, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

CHARLES CITY _ Leonard E. Tjaden, 80, 1914 Cedar Crest Lane, died unexpectedly Friday (July 25, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets. The Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, senior pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Leonard Edward Tjaden was born July 2, 1917, in rural Chickasaw County, northeast of Colwell, the son of Frank and Tena (Colemann) Tjaden. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Alta Vista. He attended school in Colwell and graduated from Colwell High School in 1935. On Aug. 16, 1939, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, he was united in marriage to Marion Margaret Draheim. The couple farmed with Leonard_s parents until the following spring. At that time they moved to farm Marion_s father_s farm, located on what is now called Underwood Avenue. They raised their children on the farm and continued to live there until about six years ago, when they moved to their current address.

Leonard maintained a long and distinguished career of service to his community. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served on the building committee of the parish hall, the organ committee, the church council and several call committees. He was on the Board of Directors for Camp EWALU of Strawberry Point, and the Lutheran Brotherhood. Leonard was currently serving as a director of the Floyd County Historical Society. In farming organizations, he was a past president of the Floyd County Beef Producers and a member of the State Cattlemen_s Board. He was a past president of the Floyd County Farm Bureau, where he was instrumental in securing their present facility on Gilbert Street. Leonard was progressive in many environmental concerns. He served as chairman of the Washington School Watershed Project. Leonard showed concern for the education of children, and served on the Charles City School Board. He was a former member of the Toastmasters and Kiwanis. Leonard was a member of St. Charles Masonic Lodge #141 AF & AM, BPO Elks #418 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1011, all of Charles City. Leonard also owned the former Gable Building in Charles City, which, after the tornado, became the Dental Center.

Living family members include his wife, Marion, of Charles City; two sons and their wives, Larry and Mary Tjaden, and Dean and Linda Tjaden, all of Charles City; a daughter, Christie Tjaden of Euless, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Meta Jensen of Osage; five grandchildren, Scott Tjaden, Deb Stanbro, Lyndsay, Beau and Seth Tjaden; five step-grandchildren, Logan, Luke and Landon Squire, Jenni Read and Jeff Edgbert; and two great-grandchildren, Kacey and Justin Stanbro.

He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Bonnie Tjaden; four brothers, Louis, Bernard, Jacob and Ernest Tjaden; and a sister, Anna Brion.

Wanda Wessels was born Oct. 16, 1940, in Clear Lake.

Agnes Lillian Brunsvold was born on Jan. 30, 1915, in rural Mason City, the daughter of John and Ella (Moritz) Hubacker.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.

She attended and received her education in the rural country schools in Cerro Gordo County and graduated from Mason City High School.

On Jan. 19, 1938, she was united in marriage to Norman Brunsvold at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1969.

After their marriage together, they farmed west of Kensett until her husband_s death. After his death she continued to live on the family farm until 1978, when she moved to Manly.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting and reading.

She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, and was very active in the Ladies Aid and church circles.

Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Sharon Troge and her husband, Norman, of Deerwood, Minn., Joanne Probst and her husband, Jack, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Sandra Fredrickson and her husband, Jim, of Manly; one son, Harold Brunsvold of Kensett; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Brunsvold and Alma Stevens, both of Kensett; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister and a daughter-in-law.

Richard A. Thompson

MARSHALLTOWN _ Richard A. Thompson, 61, a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home, formerly of Osage, died Sunday (July 27, 1997) at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Chapel at the Iowa Veterans Home, with burial to follow at the home cemetery.

He was born in Mitchell, Iowa, on Jan. 14, 1936, the son of Archie and Wanda Knight Thompson.

Reared and educated in Osage, Iowa, he attended schools there.

In 1954, he enlisted in the United States Army and served until 1956. He later re-enlisted in the Army in 1962. In 1978, he came to the Veterans Home, where he has lived since.

His memberships include the AMVETS of which he was a former District Commander and a former Post Commander; in 1996, he became a lifetime member. He was also a long-time member of the Frank Lewis Glick Post 46 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his mother, Wanda Thompson of Osage; two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Leonard) Mostek of Mitchell, and Janis Leegaard of Forest City; two brothers, David Thompson of Kearney, Neb., and Randy Thompson of LeRoy, Minn.

Preceding him in death were his father, two brothers and one sister.

Frances Irene Holt

SHEFFIELD _ Frances Irene Holt, 71, of 940 250th St., Sheffield, died Sunday (July 27, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Grarup Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Ploeger of First Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Frances was born in rural Sheffield, April 8, 1926, to Jeremiah Franklin and Bessie Mable (Engebretson) Harmon.

She attended Thornton High School and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1943.

She taught rural school systems in the area. Later she worked as a legal secretary for Clark Foster, an attorney in Sheffield.

She was united in marriage to Dale Holt on April 25, 1948, in the Richland Lutheran Church, in Thornton. She lived on the home farm after marriage, until her death.

She was baptized and confirmed June 20, 1926, at the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton.

She had many hobbies, including sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening and flowers. She was known for her sea shell crafting.

She spent a great of time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Dale R. Holt, Sheffield; two children, Beverly "Bev" Moore and her husband, Larry, of Thornton; a son, Curt Holt of Thornton; three grandchildren, Travis Fischer of Thornton, Jessie Holt and Jeremiah D. Holt, both of Brantford, Canada; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Oelkers of Thornton; and a special friend, Peggy Peter, Rockwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

He was a security officer at Prairie Meadows Race Track and Casino.

He was a member of Ducks Unlimited.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, of Monroe; two stepsons, Thomas Wenck of Des Moines, and John Wenck, of Clive; one niece, Kelly May and one nephew, Brian May, both of Iowa City; two stepgrandchildren; and one sister, Kathryn Vyrostek, of Iowa City.

Cleon "Charlie" Conrad

KANAWHA _ Cleon "Charlie" Conrad, 76, of Kanawha, died Monday (July 28, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wright Christian Reformed Church, with the Rev. William Brouwers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Kanawha American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Charlie was born May 10, 1921, to Lowell and Luella (Hanson) Conrad at Corwith.

He attended school in Corwith. He moved to Kanawha as a young man with his parents. He worked as a farm hand in the Kanawha area.

He served in the United States Army for four years during World War II. He was at Normandy Beach and received a purple heart. Following his discharge, he returned to farming in Kanawha and later worked at the Farmers Co-op Elevator.

He was united in marriage to Lois Ploegstra, on Feb. 26, 1953, at the Little Brown Church.

The couple made their home on a farm near Kanawha then retired and moved into town.

He was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church. He served as a school board member on the board for the Christian School in Kanawha. He was a member of the American Legion.

He loved telling stories and was well liked by both young and old.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Kanawha; daughters, Debra Stevens and her husband, Mike; and her son, Jeremy Olsen; Diane Johnson and her husband, Marvin L., and their children, Jamison, Candice and Tasha, all of Kanawha; Dawn Jackson and her husband, Scott, of Carlisle, and their son Brady; and Donna Watson and her husband, Jeff, and their children, Michael and Shelby, all of Brighton, Ill.; and one sister, Charlotte White and her husband, Wayne, of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.

AUSTIN, Minn. _ Jeanetta A. Sumner, 79, of Austin, died Saturday (July 26, 1997) at the Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Jeanetta was born Sept. 22, 1917, at Wheaton, Minn., the daughter of Earl and Lena (Kanapp) Adams. She graduated from Mason City High School, and the Austin Community College.

Jeanetta was married to Norman Sumner on Sept. 28, 1940, at Albert Lea. They resided in Mason City until 1944 when they moved to Austin. The Sumners operated a roofing contracting business.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.

She is survived by nephews and wives, Jack and Rae Ann Adams, Humboldt, and Jerry and Barb Adams, La Verne, Calif.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Adams, Janesville, Wis.; four great nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew.

Jeanetta was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; three brothers; and one sister.

Goldie Van Sickle was born on Dec. 15, 1915, on a farm near Woolstock, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Carpenter.

She graduated from the Webster City High School in 1935. She worked in Webster City after graduation.

In 1941, she married Kenneth Van Sickle in Bethany, Mo. They then moved to a farm near Swaledale.

In 1987, they moved to a home in Thornton. In 1995, they moved to Fort Dodge.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Fort Dodge; one daughter, Carolyn Godfrey and her husband, Michael, of Fort Dodge; one granddaughter, Becky, of Fort Dodge; two great-grandsons, Bradley and Travis, both of Fort Dodge; and two sisters, Lillian Totten and Doris Trvedt, both of Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer "Sam" G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Kensett.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Agnes Lillian Brunsvold was born on Jan. 30, 1915, in rural Mason City, the daughter of John and Ella (Moritz) Hubacher.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.

She attended and received her education in the rural country schools in Cerro Gordo County and graduated from Mason City High School.

On Jan. 19, 1938, she was united in marriage to Norman Brunsvold at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on March 14, 1969.

After their marriage together, they farmed west of Kensett, until her husband_s death. After his death, she continued to live on the family farm until 1978, when she moved to Manly.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting and reading.

She was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett, and was very active in the Ladies Aid and church circles.

Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Sharon Troge and her husband, Norman, of Deerwood, Minn., Joanne Probst and her husband, Jack, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Sandra Fredrickson and her husband, Jim, of Manly; one son, Harold Brunsvold of Kensett; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Brunsvold and Alma Stevens, both of Kensett; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister and a daughter-in-law.

Frances Irene Holt

SHEFFIELD _ Frances Irene Holt, 71, of 940 250th St., Sheffield, died Sunday (July 27, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael Ploeger of Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Frances was born in rural Sheffield on April 8, 1926, to Jeremiah Franklin and Bessie Mabel (Engebretson) Harmon.

She attended Thornton High School and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1943.

She taught in rural school systems in the area. Later she worked as a legal secretary for Clark Foster, an attorney in Sheffield.

She was united in marriage to Dale Holt on April 25, 1948, in the Richland Lutheran Church, in Thornton. She lived on the home farm after marriage, until her death.

She was baptized on June 20, 1926, and confirmed at the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton.

She had many hobbies, including sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening and flowers. She was known for her sea shell crafting.

She spent a great amount of time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the Zion Reformed Church of rural Sheffield.

She is survived by her husband, Dale R. Holt, Sheffield; two children, Beverly "Bev" Moore and her husband, Larry, of Thornton; a son, Curt Holt of Thornton; three grandchildren, Travis Fischer of Thornton, Jessica Holt and Jeremiah Holt, both of Brantford, Ontario, Canada; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Oelkers of Thornton; and a special friend, Peggy Peter, Rockwell.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Catherine Ella "Katie" Zeigler

MASON CITY _ Catherine Ella "Katie" Zeigler, 66, of 15 South Pierce Ave., died Tuesday (July 29, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Following services, her body will be cremated.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral chapel.

Catherine Ella Zeigler was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Mason City, daughter of Ole and Eva (Newton) Dirksen.

She married Arlon "Ike" Zeigler on June 10, 1972, in Mason City.

Catherine grew up in the Hampton and the Mason City area. She and her husband farmed near Meservey for 10 years, until moving to Mason City in 1982.

She worked at Kresge_s Department Store and the County Market - Easters Bakery for many years.

She enjoyed fishing, sewing and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband, Arlon "Ike" Zeigler, Mason City; seven children, Bonnie Zeigler, Phoenix, Ariz., Dianne Cole and her husband, Gary, of Rockford, Vicki Murrell and her husband, Dean, of Mason City, Dawn Kaduce and her husband, Jeff, Ventura, Lori Brosdahl and her husband, Alan, Clear Lake, Cindy Hartema, Mason City, and Arlon Zeigler and his wife, Tracey, Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Sarah and Heather Cole, both of Rockford; Michael and Melissa Murrell, both of Mason City, Amy and Ryan Kaduce, both of Ventura, Morgan Brosdahl, Clear Lake, Jeremy and Ashley Hartema, both of Mason City, and Kiley and Danielle Zeigler, both of Mason City; three brothers, Robert, Walter, and Floyd Dirksen, all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Luther Schmidt in December of 1969; and one sister, Shirley Jasperson.

David Geddes

MASON CITY _ J. David Geddes, 67, of 3 S. Georgia Ave., died Monday (July 28, 1997) at the Willow Creek Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Mason City.

There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. John Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

David Geddes was born Oct. 11, 1929, at Grand Island, Neb., the son of J. Howard and Marion Teresa (Graham) Geddes.

He was a graduate of Hampton High School, where he was involved in track and basketball. He was also a graduate of California State University at Fresno.

David served in the United States Navy from 1950-54 during the Korean War.

On June 10, 1956, he was united in marriage to Betty Jane Clark at Nora Springs, Iowa.

He was employed by his family business, Dairy Treat and the Bond Dairy. He later worked as a U.S. Postmaster. He retired after 30 years, ending his career as the Postmaster at Buffalo Center.

David served as vice president on the board of Beaver Valley Investment. He also did volunteer work at the Mason City Senior Center and was a member of the Buffalo Center Lions.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Geddes and his wife, Ann, Dallas, Texas; Scott Geddes and his wife, Lauren, Fairfield, Conn; and Ian Geddes and his wife, Karla, Billings, Mont.; four grandchildren, Katie, Tom, Olivia, and Isabel Geddes; two brothers, Mark Geddes, Freeland, Mich., and Don Geddes, Edina, Minn.; four nieces; one nephew; and one sister-in-law, Marcella Clark, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty, and one sister, Mary Ann.

Marjorie Ann Earles

OSAGE _ Marjorie Ann Earles, 58, of Osage, died Tuesday (July 29, 1997) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage, of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery, Little Cedar.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, and also until time of services on Friday.

Marjorie was born Oct. 30, 1938, in Kanawha, Iowa, the daughter of Hurshel and Ruth (Riekens) Earles.

She is survived by her parents, Hurshel and Ruth Earles, Osage; three sisters, Linda Dawson and her husband, Paul, of Newton; Susan Campbell and her husband, John, of Harlan; and Betty Norrie, Rochester, Minn.; four brothers, Steven Earles, Fallon, Nev., Keith Earles and his wife, Carol, of Traer, Jerry Earles and his wife, Mary Ellen, Independence, and Richard Earles and his wife, Clarice, of Rochester, Minn.; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Emma Harms Callanan Shotton

CLEAR LAKE _ Emma Harms Callanan Shotton, originally of Clear Lake, Iowa, died July 22, 1997, in Weslaco, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

She was born Jan. 10, 1920.

Emma was a homemaker who worked briefly as a welder during World War II and as a sales associate at Penney_s Department Store.

She married Rayman Callanan on March 16, 1941. Rayman preceded her in death on July 11, 1987.

She was united in marriage to Robert Shotton on Dec. 15, 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Shotton; one daughter, Sue Thorn and her husband, Steve Thorn, Egan, Minn., and their children, Kimberly and Eric; and one son, Ron Callanan and his wife, Jackie and their children, Sean and Heather; three brothers, Floyd Harms of Mason City, Ralph Harms of Waterloo, and Raymond Harms of Dubuque; brother-in-law, Robert Callanan, and his wife, Evelyn; sister-in-law, Leona Currier; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Ruby Bennett

MASON CITY _ Ruby Bennett, 89, of 1339 11th St., Des Moines, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (July 28, 1997) at the University Nursing Rehab Center, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Corinthian Baptist Church, Des Moines. There will be a Vigil Wake service from noon until 1 p.m. today at the Corinthian Baptist Church.

Burial will be at noon Friday in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Ruby Bennett was born in Ladonia, Texas. She was a resident of Mason City for 66 years, Texas for 16 years and Des Moines for 7 years. She had been a resident of University Nursing Rehab Center since September of 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Doris Wade of Des Moines; sons, Charles E. Bennett and Robert E. Bennett, both of Des Moines, and Bernard L. Bennett of Shawnee, Kan.; a sister, Rosie Richey of Minneapolis, Minn.; eight grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 40 stepgreat-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; and 18 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
