Arnold Frank Sheka

GRAFTON _ Arnold Frank Sheka, 80, of rural Grafton, died Sunday (July 13, 1997) at the Mitchell County Regional Hospital, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Plymouth, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers and the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to time of services on Thursday at the church.

Arnold Frank Sheka was born on Sept. 23, 1916, in Union Township, near Grafton, the son of Edward E. And Josephine (Chladek) Sheka.

He attended and received his education in the rural schools in Union Township and spent his entire lifetime farming on the family farm near Grafton.

He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with his friends and farming.

He was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church and director for the Bohemian Cemetery Association.

Survivors include one sister, Clarice Ardery of Anaheim, Calif.; one niece, Julie Ann of Anaheim, Calif.; one grand-niece, Tracy of Anaheim, Calif.; as well as numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris and Beatrice; and three brothers, Elmer, Harold and Kenneth.

Robert M. Layfield

MASON CITY _ Robert M. Layfield, 78, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (July 12, 1997) at the Naples Community Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. John Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church in memory of Robert M. Layfield.

Robert M. Layfield was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Joliet, Ill., the son of Robert E. And Anna M. (Meyers) Layfield.

He graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1937 and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., in 1941.

Bob served in the United States Air Force during World War II.

He married Jean Jeffords on April 14, 1945, at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D.

Bob owned and operated a 7-Up Bottling Company in Flint, Mich., from 1949-1962. While in Flint, Bob participated in the YMCA Big Brother program and was a big influence on his little brother, Paul C. Wynn.

In 1962, the Layfields moved to Mason City where Bob owned and operated the Coca-Cola and 7-Up Bottling Company.

Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a ruling elder in the church, a member of the National Soft Drink Association, president of the Iowa State Bottlers Association, Mason City Country Club, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Newman High School Foundation, former board member of Park Hospital and Mercy Hospital Advisory Board.

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean of Naples, Fla.; daughter Barbara Jean Busch of Mason City; son, Robert S. Layfield and his wife, Missy, of Cedar Falls; five grandsons, Charles and Michael Busch, Christopher, Matthew and Joel Layfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Theodore "Ted" Pinneke

SHEFFIELD _ Theodore "Ted" Pinneke, 82, of Sheffield, died Monday (July 14, 1997) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Beard officiating. Interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Grarup Funeral Home.

Theodore "Ted" Pinneke was born on Dec. 29, 1914, in Mason City, the son of William and Josie (Fitzel) Pinneke.

He attended school in the Mason City Public school system before finishing his education from the Westfork Country School, rural Sheffield.

Following school, he helped area farmers and worked at the Sheffield Brick and Tile for 22 years.

He was united in marriage to Ruth Merfeld on Sept. 23, 1939, in Independence, and they made their home in Sheffield.

He worked for the Sheffield-Chapin School system as a custodian for 13 years before retiring.

For a short time, following his retirement, Ted worked for Sukup Mfg. in Sheffield as a custodian.

Ted enjoyed doing woodworking, fishing and going on cruises.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Pinneke of Sheffield; three daughters, Diana Schaefer and her husband, Ken, of Sheffield; Janiece Liekweg and her husband, Duane, of Urbandale, and Shirley Knipfel and her husband, John, of Ames; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ardith Carolus and her husband, Merwin, of Mason City; Marion Fuller and her husband, A.E. , of Portland, Ore., and Viola Stricker and her husband, Cary, of Mason City; two brothers, Lawrence Pinneke and his wife, Merna, of Garner, and Robert Pinneke and his wife, Dee, of St. Angsar; and one sister-in-law, Beverly Pinneke of Sedro Woolley, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Donald L. Jarosh

BURLINGTON _ Donald L. Jarosh, 72, of 2946 N. View Lane, Burlington, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 1997, at the Burlington Medical Center after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 31, 1925, in Mason City, he was the son of John and Annastasia Novotny Jarosh.

On Aug. 28, 1947, he married Reva P. Drury at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

He graduated from the Catholic High School in Mason City and Linotype Trade School in Charles City.

Mr. Jarosh was a World War II Army veteran serving in the South Pacific.

He worked several years in the printing trade, with the first six years in Fairmont, Minn., moving to Burlington in 1953 and worked for the Burlington Hawk Eye for 22 years.

At the age of 50, he worked in chemical sales for Bonewitz Chemical Co. and won salesman of the year with Chemical Ways.

He was a member of St. Paul_s Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Black Knights of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an avid golfer and reader, loved music and played the piano.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Linda K. "Stephen J." Cox of Bettendorf; Jacquelyn S. "Michael P." John of Burlington, and Jeanine A. "Barry J." Andersen of Roscoe, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Bradley and Deena John, Brian and Kevin Cox, Sarah, Stephen and David Andersen; and three sisters, Lillian Humphrey of Des Moines; Irene Price of Mason City, and Helen Hardy of Menomonie, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

The funeral for Mr. Jarosh was held on Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at St. Paul_s Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Sterling officiating. Interment and military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post No. 10102 and No. 9162 were held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial to the Burlington Area Catholic School Systems has been established.

Duane Clinton Shomber

MASON CITY _ Duane Clinton Shomber, 60, of Mason City, died Monday (July 14, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the St. Ansgar Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary Gonnerman officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Cemetery, Orchard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Duane was born June 16, 1937, at the Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa, Kan.

He was baptized in the Nora Springs Christian Church.

He graduated from Charles City High School in 1955. Soon after, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was discharged in October of 1959.

He is survived by his father, Clinton O. Shomber, Osage; stepfather, Clifford A. Moody of Ottawa, Kan.; four sisters, Louise Hinrichsen, Barbara Miller, Dorothy Turner and Linda Riker, all of Osage; one brother, Charles E. Shomber of Augusta, Ga.; one stepbrother, Larry Moody of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Eunice Moody; and his stepmother, Margaret Shomber.

John S. Farrington

CLARION _ John S. Farrington, 79, of Clarion, died Monday (July 14, 1997) at his home.

Services and burial will be in Adamsville, Ala.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Clarion V.F.W. Hall.

There will be no visitation. Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, is in charge of arrangements.

John Sylvester Farrington was born March 12, 1918, at Adamsville, Ala.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle of Clarion; daughter, Tina Ruth Pendley of Alabama; three grandchildren; and four sisters, Marie Farrington, Louise Lee, Bessie Gillian and Vera Jones, all of Adamsville, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Robert M. Kleckner

ST. ANSGAR _ Robert M. Kleckner, 81, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider and the Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with a Knights of Colubmus rosary at 7 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 8 p.m. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Robert M. Kleckner was born Jan. 20, 1916, near New Haven.

Survivors include by his wife, Frances Kleckner of St. Ansgar; three sons, Gary Kleckner of Ankeny; Douglas Kleckner of St. Ansgar, and Bruce Kleckner of Fresno, Calif.; three daughters, Sandra Anderson of Antioch, Ill.; Jean White of Fullerton, Calif., and Carolyn Williams of Austin, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three brothers, Maurice Kleckner of St. Ansgar; James Kleckner of Vail, Colo., and William Kleckner of Stevens Point, Wis.; and two sisters, Bernice Paulson of Osage, and Mary Schwalbe of Lake Tahoe, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, three brothers and two sisters.

OSAGE _ Ruther Denner Nelson, 91, of Osage, died Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Champion Funeral Home.

Richard "Dick" Earl Mack

MASON CITY _ Richard "Dick" Earl Mack, 64, of 1425 N. Adams Ave., died Monday (July 14, 1997) at his home.

Freddie Leerar

KANAWHA _ Freddie Leerar, 78, of Kanawha, passed away Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ewing Funeral Home, Britt, with the Rev. Robert Dodge and Father Marvin Bries officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. Military rites will be under the direction of the Britt American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Freddie , the son of Joseph and Tina Sweers Leerar, was born March 3, 1919, on a farm near Stilson. He attended country schools.

On April 11, 1942, he was united in marriage with Elsie Hampe in Bethany, Mo. Freddie served in the U.S. Army 432nd Air Force in England from 1942 to 1945. In his unit #381st Bombardment Group, he received four overseas service bars, the European-African-Middle Eastern with six bronze stars and a Good Conduct Medal. The couple started farming between Britt and Kanawha in 1947. Freddie played softball all over the area as a pitcher for many years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and bowling. Freddie was always busy helping his neighbors with their farm work. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion in Britt.

Freddie is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Kanawha; two daughters, Betty Bublitz and her husband, David, of Marion, and Patricia Sutton and her husband, Perry, of Waterloo; three sons, Dick and his wife, Judy; Robert and his wife, Barbara, and Craig and his wife, Marlene, all of Britt; 16 grandchildren, Brian, Randy, Nicole, Jennifer, Christopher, Ethan, Kristy, Kari, Stephanie, Bobby Jo, Angie, Joe, Becca, Nicholas, Michelle and Paul; four great-grandchildren, Seth, Sam, Rachel and Brady; two sisters, Esther Monson of Mason City, and Caroline Slagle of Missoula, Mont.; one brother, Jake Leerar of Kanawha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Ruth Denner Nelson

OSAGE _Ruth Denner Nelson, 91, of Osage, died Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Home, with the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be held in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Home. Champion Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Denner Nelson was born March 1, 1906, to Frank and Evalyn (Cowdell) Denner. She was baptized May 12, 1918, in New Hampton. She received her early education in New Hampton, and graduated from Iowa State University, after which she taught school for several years at Boyden. Ruth married Walter Nelson on Aug. 27, 1932, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and to this union one son, David Walter Nelson, was born on Nov. 30, 1942. While living in Osage she was employed by Dale Peterson Drapery and Flooring as a seamstress. She was a resident of the Faith Home for the past eight years.

She is survived by one brother, Samuel Denner of Santa Rosa, Calif.; one nephew, Richard Denner of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four nieces, Lynda Mosbach living in Virginia, Evelyn Dieterich of St. Ansgar, Beverly Allison of Mesa, Ariz., and Betty Gast of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, in 1965; her son, David, in 1972; and a sister, Mae Klemesrud in 1976.

Lillian E. Theilen

MASON CITY _ Lillian E. Theilen, 89, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church Friday.

Memorials may be given to the Lillian E. Theilen Memorial Fund.

Lillian Theilen was born April 28, 1908, in Rockwell, the daughter of Emil and Louisa (Gerdes) Theilen.

She graduated from Rockwell High School, attended Cedar Falls Normal College and received her B.A. degree from Drake University.

Lillian taught in country schools for 11 years in Cerro Gordo County and 34 years in the Mason City Public Schools. She retired in 1972.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Altar Guild, Mason City Teachers Association, Retired Teachers and volunteered at Good Shepherd where she played for chapel services each Wednesday.

She is survived by one brother, Harold Theilen and his wife, Rowena, of Fort Mohave, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Marian Ellis

CHARLES CITY _ Marian Ellis, 85, of Charles City, died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, senior pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Marian Marie Dostart Ellis was born May 19, 1912, in Charles City.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Volbrecht of Iuka, Ill., and Donald Volbrecht of Abilene, Texas; one daughter, Sheryl Hibbs of Joplin, Mo.; two sisters, Marlys Howe and Helen Peters, both of Charles City; two brothers, Don Dostart of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Robert Dostart of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and three brothers.

Arthur C. Seidel

MASON CITY _ Arthur C. Seidel, 83, of 616 N. Van Buren Ave., died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

Richard "Dick" Earl Mack

MASON CITY _ Richard "Dick" Earl Mack, 64, 1425 N. Adams Ave., died Monday (July 14, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Mason City officiating.

Graveside services will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Thomas Healey of First Congregational Church of Clear Lake officiating and military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and from 9 until 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Richard Earl Mack Memorial fund.

Dick was born June 20, 1933, in Clear Lake, the son of Earl E. And Hallie (Bell) Mack.

In 1951, he graduated from Clear Lake High School where he was an outstanding football player.

During the Korean War, Dick served in the United States Army as a dispatcher and driver in Trieste, Italy.

After service, he attended Mason City Junior College and worked as an auto body mechanic for Birum Olson Garage and Mason City Auto Body Works.

Dick was married to Margaret M. Fisher, May 22, 1959. Margaret died in 1987.

An avid bowler, Dick was a member of the Rose Bowl bowling team. He also enjoyed cards, hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City, the Moose Lodge and V.F.W. Post 733.

Survivors include his mother, Hallie Mack, Clear Lake; his sister, Audrey Peterson and her husband, Bill, Clearwater, Fla.; an Aunt Carol Josten, Minneapolis, Minn.; an Uncle Donald Bell, Sun City, Ariz.; nephews, David, Steven, Michael and wife, Debbra, Jeffrey and wife, Missy Peterson, Clearwater, Fla.; and niece, Sheryl Kaler and husband, Dan, of Mason City; cousins, Jack Prestholt and wife, Shirley, Clear Lake, Rosemary Oftelie and husband, Duane, Minneapolis, Minn., Pat Deputy and wife, Myrll, of Nevada, Don Deputy and wife, Carol, of California; Shirley Houck and husband, Tom, of Montana; sisters and brother-in-law of Mason City.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Margaret; his father, Earl Mack; maternal and paternal grandparents; aunts Merna Deputy, and Mable Prestholt.

Walter L. Johnson

DOVER, Del. _ Walter L. Johnson, 66, of Dover, died of cancer on Wednesday, July 9, 1997, in Kent General Hospital, Dover.

Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 17, 1931, in Wesley, Iowa, son of the late Elmer K. And Ruth (Larson) Johnson.

He was a retired chief master sergeant in the United States Air Force, and retired from Dover Air Force Base in 1983.

He was employed as manager of NAPA Auto Parts, Dover.

Mr. Johnson was a veteran of Korea and the Vietnam War.

During his 31-year Air Force career, he was assigned to the Air Police in Ramstein, Germany, and thereafter, he was assigned to the maintenance squadron for the B-52, and then, as flight engineer superintendent for the C-141, 20th MAS, and later for the C-5, 3rd MAS, at Dover Air Force Base, for 16 years.

He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association; the American Legion Walter L. Fox Post 2, Dover; the Shrine Nur Temple, Wilmington; and the Union Lodge 7, AF & AM, Dover.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, receiving his degree through the Scottish Rite Consistory.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Wilhelmine Johnson; a son, Doug Johnson of Dover; two daughters, Deborah J. Dukes of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Susan J. Sacchetta of West Chester, Pa.; a brother, Denny Johnson of Britt, Iowa; three sisters, Jean Knapper of Maxwell, Calif.; Sharlene Beenken of Mason City, Iowa, and MaryLee Leuwerke of Joice, Iowa; five grandsons, Jason Johnson of Dover, Brandon Dukes and Pierce Dukes, both of Lawrenceville, and Tommy Sacchetta and Tyler Sacchetta, both of West Chester, Pa.; and one granddaughter, Taylor Dukes of Lawrenceville.

Service with full military honors were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 1997, in Chapel One on Dover Air Force Base, Dover. The chaplain, Captain James G. Chizek officiated.

Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, Del., was in charge of arrangements where a Masonic service was held.

Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Joel Holland

FOREST CITY _ Joel Holland, 89, of Forest City, died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

Merle T. Burns

IOWA CITY _ Merle T. Burns, 82, of 415 Elmridge Ave., died Tuesday (July 15, 1997) at Mercy Hospital after a short illness.

Merle T. Burns was born Aug. 18, 1914, in Iowa Falls.

He was married to Doris Smith on Aug. 18, 1933, in Mason City. She died in 1984.

He married Esther Hemingway Murphy on Nov. 9, 1985, in Mission, Texas.

He retired in 1977 from the Mason City Street Department where he had worked for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; two daughters, Marlys (Richard) Nelson of Fairfax, and Darlene (Dick) Prilipp of Aurora, Colo; two sons, Ron (Elviena) of Norway and Allan (Marlene) of Shueyville; four stepsons, Dennis (Gail) Murphy of Cedar Rapids, Donald (Kris) Murphy of West Branch, Ronald (Jenny) Murphy of Gilbert Ariz., and Mike (Brenda) Murphy of Wellman; and three stepdaughters, Mary (Scott) Means and Terri (Dan) Shay, both of Iowa City; and Patti (Phil) Seydel of West Branch. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 17 stepgrandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris; his parents; a brother, Virgil; a sister, Sarah Mae Schadt; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Arthur C. Seidel

MASON CITY _ Arthur C. Seidel, 83, of 616 N. Van Buren Ave., died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Harvey Seidel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

Arthur_s family suggests that memorials be directed to the Arthur C. Seidel Memorial Fund.

Arthur C. Seidel was born on April 20, 1914, in Worth County, the son of Charles and Maude (Wood) Seidel.

He attended country schools in rural Lincoln Township.

After receiving his schooling, he farmed for a short time prior to entering military service in 1942. Arthur served in the United States Army during World War II in the Amphibious Engineering Battalion. He received the Purple Heart.

After his military service, he returned to farming northwest of Mason City.

On Jan. 15, 1946, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Bishop at Mason City.

The couple moved to Mason City in 1967 and Arthur was employed by the Cerro Gordo County Farm, until retirement in 1978.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Survivors include two brothers, Frank Seidel, Hanlontown; and Marcus Seidel, Mason City; one sister, Mrs. Florence Benjegerdes, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; and an infant daughter; two sisters, Mary Schlotterback and Melissa Wichman; and four brothers, Lock Seidel, Charlie Seidel, Clarence Seidel and one infant brother.

FOREST CITY _ James F. Wooldridge, 49, of Forest City, died Thursday (July 17, 1997) in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

James F. Wooldridge was born in Mason City, on June 25, 1948, the son of Edward and Florence (Hamstreet) Wooldridge.

His family moved to Forest City in 1958 and he graduated from Forest City High School in 1966.

Jim continued his education, receiving his BA degree from Wartburg College in 1973 and his MBA from Drake in 1974.

He was married to Mary Beth Kamish at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Forest City, on June 28, 1969.

Jim worked for Economy Data Products in Des Moines from 1974-1976.

He returned to Forest City and worked at the Forest City Bank & Trust Company from 1976-1988. At that time he began working for Winnebago Industries and has been there since.

Jim was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served as congregational vice president and on the Board of Trustees.

He was a former member of the Evening Lions and a Mason.

Jim_s dedication to his community is evidenced by his long service as a City Council member, beginning in 1982, until the time of his death.

He was also involved in many local organizations, Sig_s Band and the Community Band, Brickstreet Theater, the Miss Forest City Pageant, Puckerbrush Days and Forest City 2000 Community Development.

He also taught adult classes at Waldorf College and Wartburg College.

Jim was an avid reader. His family remembers him as a loving husband, father, son-in-law and doting grandfather.

He died in Rochester, Minn., on July 17, 1997, at the age of 49 years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Wooldridge of Forest City; two sons, Karl and his wife, Kari, and their son, Kyle, of Waverly, and Hugh of Forest City; a brother, Robert Wooldridge and his wife, Jan, of Ocala, Fla.; a sister and her husband, Lois and Don Olson, of Worthington, Minn.; sister-in-law, Joan Ortlieb of Grass Valley, Calif.; mother-in-law, Eleanora Kamish, Forest City; brother-in-law, Frank Kamish and his wife, Brenda, of Long Grove; a sister-in-law and her husband, Nancy and Bill Jensvold, of Buffalo Center; sister-in-law, Willadean Kamish, Portland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Florence Wooldridge; a brother, Charles; and a son, Seth.

Ethel Mae Tuttle

CLEAR LAKE _ Ethel Mae Tuttle, 92, of rural Clear Lake, died Friday (July 18, 1997) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Belmond Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to services at the church.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Ethel Mae Tuttle Memorial Fund.

Ethel was born Oct. 5, 1905, in Belmond, the daughter of Willis Sylvester and Nellis Rose (Bulis) Luick.

She graduated from Belmond High School in 1924 and then earned a Normal Training Certificate to teach school. She taught rural school, as well as first grade, at the Fertile Consolidated School from 1960 to 1971.

She married Morgan Tuttle on Jan. 4, 1928, in Eagle Grove.

The couple farmed in the Belmond and Clarion areas from 1928 to 1947. They moved to Clear Lake in 1947. Morgan died April 17, 1968.

Ethel enjoyed living on a farm throughout her life, but she also delighted in traveling all over the world. One of her greatest joys was being with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, the Fertile Garden Club and Neighborhood Livewires Birthday Club.

She is survived by three children, Robert Carl Tuttle of Mason City; Betty Mae Waddington and her husband, Don, of Hanlontown; and Merle Luick Tuttle and his wife, Marsha, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, Timothy Tuttle and his wife, Linda, of Fertile; Mark Tuttle of Joice; Robin Harms and her husband, Randy, of Joice; Danny Tuttle and his wife, Brenda, of Mason City; Vicky Graf and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; Sherry Medlin and her husband, Joe, of Altoona; Penny Miller and her husband, Dan, of Fertile; Tammy Waddington of Thornton; Bruce Waddington and his wife, Jenifer, of Fertile; Rebecca Tuttle of Clear Lake; William Tuttle and his wife, Hope, of Clear Lake; and Jennifer Tuttle of Clear Lake; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Edith Hill of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Morgan; three sons, Leo Dean Tuttle, Billy Robert Tuttle and Larry Lee Tuttle; and one sister, Emma Watts.

Rose LaVonne Morris Maland

KANAWHA _ Mrs. Rose LaVonne Morris Maland, 79, of 233 University Ave., Des Moines, formerly of Kanawha, died Wednesday (July 16, 1997) at Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, of coronary arrest.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Kanawha United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, near Kanawha.

Rose LaVonne was born on Dec. 16, 1917, in Corwith, to Elmer and Lucille (Harron) Morris. Her given name was Rose LaVonne, but she always went by LaVonne.

LaVonne was united in marriage to Omar Maland on Feb. 8, 1948, and they farmed near Kanawha until 1962, when they retired. They moved into Kanawha after retirement.

Omar and LaVonne spent their winters, for many years, in Mesa, Ariz.

She lived in Kanawha for most of her life, before moving to Des Moines.

LaVonne suffered many years with arthritis, spending the last seven years in a nursing home in Des Moines.

LaVonne participated in many community activities. She was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crafts, playing cards, bowling and watching the Minnesota Twins and Phoenix Suns games.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Wigton and her husband, Roger, of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Paul Eliason of Clear Lake, and Dorcey Mosher and her husband, Monte, of Des Moines; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Hersal Morris of Kanawha; and one sister, Bernice Conklin, of La Mesa, Calif.

Paul Anthony Hotvedt

SPENCER _ Paul Anthony Hotvedt, of Spencer, passed away Thursday (July 17, 1997) at the Spencer Municipal Hospital, at the age of 64.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, with Pastor Tom Dettmer officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Warner Funeral Home, and from 9 until 9 p.m. Sunday, with a Moose service at 7 p.m. by the Moose Lodge #496 of Spencer. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Paul Anthony Hotvedt, the son of Walter and Pearl (Cariveau) Hotvedt, was born June 26, 1933, in Grand Forks, N.D.

He grew up on a farm outside of East Grand Forks, Minn., began his education in country school and graduated from East Grand Forks Central in 1950.

He continued his education at the University of Minnesota and completed a two year agricultural program in 1952. He then was drafted into the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict.

Paul married Marilyn Olsen in 1955, in Warren, Minn. He farmed in the East Grand Forks area and was sales manager of Preston Implement.

In 1971, Paul quit farming and became district sales manager for the Melroe Company in areas of South Dakota, Nebraska, Southern Minnesota and portions of Iowa..

Paul married Lorraine Koester in Mankato, Minn., on July 11, 1973. They moved to Spencer in 1977.

He continued working for the Melroe Company until his retirement in August of 1995. While with Melroe, Paul was the recipient of many awards. He was Regional Man of the Year twice and was the first person to receive its National Man of the Year award twice, in 1975 and 1990. In October of 1996, he was inducted into the Melroe Hall of Fame.

While living in East Grand Forks, Paul served as president of the Jaycees, president of the PTA, chairman of the Polk County Republic Party, the State Republican Central Committee and the Bethany Lutheran Church Board. He also served on the church board of the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell, S.D. , in the 1970s.

While in Spencer, he served on the board of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Paul also was a trustee of the Spencer Moose Lodge where he was prelate, governor and past governor. He was a member of the North Mankato American Legion, the East Grand Forks V.F.W., the Blue Water Sam_s Camping Club and the Family Motor Coach Assn.

Paul is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Charles Skinner of Lutsen, Minn., and Elizabeth and David Jacobson of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Tom Hotvedt of Independence, Mo.; nine grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Mary and Gary Hjalmervik of Mason City; two stepsons and their wives, Duran and Annette Koester of Glencoe, Minn., and Craig and Peggy Koester of Onalaska, Wis.; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials funds have been established with the Bethany Lutheran Church and Hospice of Northwest Iowa by the family.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home with a parish Vigil Scriptural Wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the Mass.

Allen Donald Robel was born Sept. 21, 1940, at Alderly, Wis.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, of Charles City; one son, Steven A. Robel of Charles City; four daughters, Theresa Pfeifer of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Ginger Robel of Goshen, Conn., Kristin Duroe of Adel, and Traci Bulow of Elkhorn, Wis.; three bothers, John Robel of Milton, Wis., Dan Robel of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Tim Robel of Eaton, Colo.; four sisters, Kathy Weber of Whitewater, Wis., Nancy Robel of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Mary Lou Tutton and Linda Lorman both of Palmyra, Wis.; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

The family suggests memorials be given to Heart to Home Hospice or the Immaculate Conception Educational Fund, both in Charles City.

Margaret R. Voelker

CHARLES CITY _ Margaret R. (Mrs. Harry) Voelker, 87, of Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, and formerly of 1764 Victory Ave., rural Charles City, died Friday (July 18, 1997) at the nursing home following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert St., with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., where the family will receive friends from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday morning.

Mrs. Voelker, the former Margaret Rose Hobert, was born October 14, 1909, in Niles Township, rural Colwell.

Survivors include her husband, Harry, of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church or Heart To Home Hospice.

Leonard R. Schmidt

BELMOND _ Leonard R. Schmidt, 76, died Friday (July 18, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, East Campus, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery in Meservey.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home and one hour prior to church services at the church.

Leonard was born Nov. 28, 1920, near Alexander.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Schmidt of Belmond; four sisters, Shirley Faaborg of Meservey, Wilma Johnson of Alexander, Phyllis Stadtlander of Meservey and Ruth Smith of LaCrosse, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Dena Schlutz

THORNTON _ Dena Schlutz, 91, died Friday (July 18, 1997) at Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home.

Dena Schlutz was born April 14, 1906, on her parents farm near Belmond, the daughter of John and Haidena (Goeman) Riekens. She attended country school in the area and following school she remained at home to help on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Henry B. Schlutz on March 11, 1927, in Rockwell, and they made their home in the Thornton area their entire lives. She worked for the United States postal system as a postal clerk in Thornton for 19 years. Dena enjoyed doing crochet work, sewing and playing cards with her many friends. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Thornton.

She is survived by her two sons, Marvin Schlutz and his wife, Jeanette, of Mason City and Delbert Schlutz and his wife, Barbara, of Omaha Neb.; five grandchildren, Debra, Steven, Patti, Michael and Thomas; five great-grandchildren, Robert, Kari, Jessie, Christopher and Amanda.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers and six sisters.
