Leo Cimijotti

By John Skipper

Of The Globe-Gazette

MASON CITY _ Leo Cimijotti, 94, a horseman whose performances earned him a place in the Circus Hall of Fame, died Monday in the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Cimijotti was the last living member of a family that supplied horses for circuses and performed on horses all over the country 70 years ago.

The Cimijotti family troupe was described in a May 1928 issue of Billboard as "the world's greatest horse act." Cimijotti's father was considered an expert horse trainer.

The family had a farm from which they sold horses to circuses when they came to town. In a 1991 interview with the Globe-Gazette, Cimijotti recalled seeing John Ringling, owner of the famed Ringling Brothers Circus, at the family farm.

I can see him yet with his big mustache," Cimijotti said. "He was just a regular guy," he said.

Starting in 1926, Cimijotti took some of the family horses on the road with the Robbins Brothers Circus.

When circuses began to dwindle, the Cimijotti horses were used in fairs and exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada and were also used in a few movies.

In that 1991 interview, Cimijotti summed up his skills in those old films: "You don't have to be an actor to ride in a movie," he said.
