James O. Smith, 72, of 222 S. Pierce Ave., died Friday (Feb.
21, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Anderson
of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St.
Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to the James O. Smith Memorial Fund.
James O. Smith was born May 15, 1924, in Omaha, Neb. James was
a longtime resident of Mason City and worked for Mason City Brick
& Tile for over 25 years. He was a hard worker who enjoyed life
and being around people.
Survivors include brothers, Antonio Dovali of Waterloo; William
Dovali of San Antonio, Texas, and Ralph Dovali of Omaha, Neb.;
and sister, Donna L. Fenceroy of San Antonio, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Erwin H. Stemmerman
HAMPTON
Erwin H. Stemmerman, 71, of Hampton, died Saturday (Feb. 22,
1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial
will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home.
Erwin H. Stemmerman was born April 28, 1925, in Butler County,
the son of Edward and Sophia Finke Stemmerman.
He was educated in the Butler County Schools.
He served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 during World
War II.
He was united in marriage to Arlene Folkers on Feb. 22, 1948,
in Allison.
He was a farmer and had also worked at Sukup Manufacturing in
Sheffield.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene Stemmerman of Hampton; one
daughter, Janell Brinkman and her husband, Darrel, of Hampton;
one son, Gary Stemmerman and his wife, Pam, of Mason City; one
sister, Bernice Riggert of Eldora; one brother, Paul Stemmerman
of Cedar Falls; two stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John.

Erma A. Brue
FERTILE
Erma A. Brue, 81, of Fertile, died Sunday (Feb. 23, 1997) at
North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fertile
Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating. Burial
will be in Grant Center Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today, with a 6:30 p.m.
prayer service at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth
St., Clear Lake; and one hour before Wednesday's service at the
church.
Erma Arlene Hennis was born Aug. 6, 1915, in Grant Township,
Cerro Gordo County, the only child of Vern and Mary (Back) Hennis.
She attended Grant Center School for eight years and in 1933
graduated from Fertile High School.
She attended Grant Center Sunday school as a child, but later
attended the Fertile Lutheran Church. She accepted Christ as
her personal savior in August of 1933.
She married Stanley Brue on Nov. 28, 1934, in the Fertile Lutheran
Church.
They lived on farms until 1979. They raised and showed Arabian
horses until their retirement to Fertile.
They also owned and operated Brue's Processing Plant in Fertile
during the 1960s.
She was a pianist and organist for about 60 years, both in the
church and for community affairs.
She played for many years as a member of the Clear Lake Evangelical
Free Church. Recently, she was organist at the Fertile Lutheran
Church.
In retirement, she enjoyed gardening and wood-working with her
husband.
Her lifelong passion for writing included frequent correspondence,
family and community histories and poetry.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley A. Brue of Fertile; daughter,
Mary Annette Baca and her husband, Gary, of Denver, Colo.; six
grandchildren, Michael Brue of Alvarado, Minn., and friend, Carol
Graham of Grand Forks, N.D.; David Brue of South St. Paul, Minn.;
Steven Lovik and his wife, Tarh, of Kapolei, Hawaii; Scott Lovik
and his wife, Laura, of Clear Lake; Angela Healy and her husband,
John, of Corinth, Texas, and Bridget Glenn and her husband, Gary,
of Mesa, Ariz.; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives
and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, David.

Blanche Mae Phillips, 87, of Algona, died Sunday (Feb. 23,
1997) at the Algona Manor.

Blanche Mae Phillips was born Sept. 2, 1909, in Ottumwa.
She is survived by her husband, Roger, of Algona; three daughters,
JoAnna Fredrickson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Patricia Voyles and
Shirley McDonald, both of Algona; nine grandchildren; 10 great-
grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two
brothers.

Evelyn R. Elefson

Evelyn R. Elefson, 96, of Menomonie, Wis., died Sunday (Feb.
23, 1997) at the Dunn County Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held today at the Menomonie Alliance
Church, Menomonie, Wis., with the Rev. Gary Benedict and the
Rev. Jack Stimmel officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.
26, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with the Rev. David
Biddle officiating.
The former Evelyn Minium was born Sept. 10, 1900, in South Dakota
to Jakob and Lydia (Barnhardt) Minium.
She graduated from high school in Clear Lake, and attended DePauw
University in Greencastle, Ind,. for a year.
In 1920 Evelyn married Emil L. Elefson and then raised her family.
She graduated from the Open Bible Institute in Des Moines in
1938, and was an ordained minister.
Evelyn organized and was minister at the Bethany Chapel in Des
Moines until 1943, and then at a church in Clear Lake until 1947
when she moved to Eau Claire, Wis., and worked for the Department
of Social Services for the State of Wisconsin.
Evelyn and another retired minister formed a partnership in
the Inspirational Gift Shop in Eau Claire for 12 years until
she retired and moved to Tainter Lake near Menomonie, Wis., where
she lived for many years. Evelyn moved to Menomonie in 1989.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters, Robert Elefson
of Seattle, Wash.; Don Elefson of Marshalltown; Marilyn Johnson
and her husband, Floyd, of Phoenix, Ariz.; the Rev. Richard Elefson
of Bismarck, N.D.; Marcia Pietersen and her husband, Francis,
of Manly, and Milton Elefson of Effingham, Ill.; 33 grandchildren;
many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and other
relatives and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Floyd;
and two sisters, Maude Woods and Nora Reinhardt.

in Geneseo. She had lived many years in Garner, Ventura and Clear

Evelyn Hueske was born Feb. 11, 1910, in Jansen, Neb.
She married George Woelke on Nov. 27, 1936, in Beatrice, Neb.
He died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, George of Colona; two grandsons; a
sister, Lorna Harsh of Lincoln, Neb.; and brothers, Kenneth Hueske

Funeral services for Pearl M. Olson, 89, of the Good Samaritan

Pearl died Monday (Feb. 24, 1997) at the Naeve Hospital.
Pearl was born in Winnebago County, Iowa, on Oct. 30, 1907,
the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Banta) Beaver. She attended
Lincoln #6 rural school in Winnebago County, near Rake, Iowa.
She was married to Edgar Farus of Forest City, Iowa, in 1925
and they had one son, Donald. They made their home
in Forest City, Iowa, and Bricelyn. Edgar preceded her in death
in 1932.
In 1933 she was married to Anton S. Olson and he preceded her
in death in 1954.
Pearl had been a member of the United Methodist Church, Albert
Lea, and had been active in ladies groups.
She had lived in Bricelyn for 30 years after her husband Edgar's
death and worked in St. Luke's Home in Blue Earth.
In 1960 she moved to Mason City, Iowa, and worked at Mercy Hospital
until she retired in 1973 at which time she moved to Albert Lea.
She was a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She
was a lover of nature.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Beverly Farus of Fargo,
N.D.; and sister-in-law, Olive Beaver of Menomonie, Wis. She
is also survived by a special friend, Alf Larson of Albert Lea,
and by very dear nieces, nephews and many friends.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar Farus
in 1932; husband, Anton Olson in 1954; son, Don Farus in 1988;
two sisters, Bertha Sickels and Ruby Farus; and three brothers,
Guy, Howard and Frank Beaver.

Richard was born Jan. 14, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son
of William and Lorraine (Buman) Lang.
Richard had been a longtime resident of Opportunity Village,
Clear Lake and Mason City.
Richard worked at the work center at the Village and also at
the North Iowa Vocational Center, Mason City, where he established
many lasting friendships.
He was a former member of the Church of Christ, Clear Lake.
Richard is survived by an uncle, George Lang and his wife, Eldy,
of Albert Lea, Minn.; a half brother, Dennis Lang, Faribault,
Minn.; cousins, John Lang, Albert Lea, Minn.; Neil Lang, Twin
Cities area in Minnesota, and Sharon Nelson and her husband,
Earl, Albert Lea, Minn.; and his Village family and his special
friends, the Meservey Ladies.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Billy
Lang.

Dorothy E. Momberg Leitz, 73, of 3518 28th St. N., St. Petersburg,
Fla., and formerly of 600 South Iowa St., Charles City, died
Sunday (Feb. 23, 1997) at the Columbia Edward White Hospital,
St. Petersburg, Fla., after suffering a massive heart attack.
Funeral services are tentatively planned for 11 a.m. Friday
at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.
Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m.
and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday, where other

Hazel Patricia ``Pat'' Albers, 70, of 106 Fourth St. N.W.,
died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit, Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday
at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Steimel
officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Winter
Funeral Home, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service. There will be
further visitation one hour before services at the church on
Friday.
Hazel Patricia ``Pat'' Albers, daughter of Joe and Mabel (Pennell)
Higgins, was born Nov. 14, 1926, at Armstrong.
She moved to Burt in 1938 and graduated from Burt High School
in 1944. Her mother died 18 days before she graduated.
She married Edwin Albers on Aug. 1, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in West Bend. Two children blessed the union,
Linda and Mike.
Pat was active in St. Patrick's Altar Society serving as president,
secretary and treasurer. She was a charter member of the VFW
Auxiliary which started in June 1950. She served as auxiliary
president, district president, and in 1964, she served as state
president. She was also a Girl Scout leader for two years and
a Den Mother for one year.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin Albers in the Veterans
Home in Marshalltown; one daughter, Linda Steinberg, St. Ansgar;
one son, Mike Alberts and his wife, Linda, of Apex, N.C.; four
granddaughters, Brenda Larsen of Mason City; Tricia Garry and
her husband, Victor, of Mason City; Diane Adams and her husband,
Paul, of Buffalo Center, and Mindy Steinberg of St. Ansgar; four
great-grandsons, Jake and Tanner Larsen, both of Mason City;
and Dylan and Dalton Adams, both of Buffalo Center; three sisters,
Virl Hammerstrom, Orlando, Fla.; Jolene Lieb and her husband,
Neil, of Cipperopoles, Calif.; and Alice Kennedy and her husband,
Bill, of Bancroft; her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Albers of Buffalo
Center; two half-sisters, Carol Miller of West Bend, and Jane
Johnson of Creston; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas;
and one sister, Janet Sue.

Iva P. Hanna, 85, of 819 12th St. N.E., died Saturday (Feb.
22, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

to her wishes.

Iva Pearl Hanna was born Sept. 11, 1911, in Osterdock, the daughter
of Joseph and Ella (Troester) Moser.
Iva came to North Iowa in 1915 with her parents and settled
in Manly.
She attended Manly schools until 1927, when her family moved
to Carpenter. She then graduated from Carpenter High School in
1929.
Iva then went on to attend Thompson Prudemar Beauty School in
Des Moines and graduated in 1932.
She was married to Charles Leonard ``Len'' Hanna on July 7,
1934, in Clear Lake.
Iva worked for Montgomery Ward for 10 years, retiring in 1964.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City. She
was one of the founders of the North Iowa Quilters Guild. She
served on the board of directors at the YWCA and Women's Club.
She also enjoyed her favorite sewing club, which started in 1940

She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Thompson, Osage, and
Judy Kellar and her husband, Lloyd, Nampa, Idaho; four grandchildren,
Kristie Reynolds and her husband, James, Osage; Kent Thompson
and his wife, Marie, San Antonio, Texas; Laura Clubb and her
husband, E.J., Meridian, Idaho, and Gregory Kellar, Nampa, Idaho;
five great-grandchildren, Jamie and Ryan Mathahs, Osage; Alexander
and Nicholas Thompson, San Antonio, Texas, and Courtney Clubb,
Meridian, Idaho; one nephew, Gary Moser and wife, Sue, El Monte,
Calif., and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Len, in 1995;
one granddaughter, Kimberla Thompson; two sisters, Leila Adams

Steve Cobb was born May 3, 1970, in Mason City, son of Richard
and Alice (Book) Cobb.
Steve grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High
School in 1988 and he attended NIACC.
He worked for Carroll George Manufacturing in Northwood; Comfort
Air, Mason City; the Athenian Supper Club and also Good Shepherd
Health Care Center.
Steve loved mountain biking, working on cars and looking for
antiques. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Steve was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his father, Richard Cobb of Mason City; his
mother, Alice Cobb and her special friend, Dave Adams, Mason
City; a special friend, Becky Satern, Mason City; one brother,
Lee Jay Cobb and his wife, Lisa, and their son, Jaydon, Mason

Dorothy E. Momberg Leitz, 73, 3518 28th St. N., St. Petersburg,
Fla., and formerly of 600 S. Iowa St., died unexpectedly Sunday
(Feb. 23, 1997) at the Columbia Edward White Hospital, St. Petersburg,
Fla., after suffering a massive heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Fullerton
Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. Darwin Miller
Jr. of the Temple Baptist Church officiating.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home,
where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. and visitation
will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday morning.
Mrs. Momberg Leitz, the former Dorothy Elizabeth Wertin, was
born June 4, 1923, in Malcom, the daughter of William Matthew
and Elizabeth (Kilowitz) Wertin.
She lived in several towns while she was growing up. In 1946,
she graduated from Waukon High School in Waukon.
On June 21, 1947, in Charles City, she was united in marriage
to Wayne Virgil Momberg. Mr. Momberg died Aug. 9, 1965, in Charles
City.
Mrs. Momberg was a ward clerk, cook and general supervisor at
the former Floyd County Care Facility. She was a former member
of the First Baptist Church, Wa-Tan-Ye, Women of the Moose Chapter
1190 and the VFW Auxillary, all of Charles City.
Living family members include four children, Howard Iverson
and Virginia (Mrs. Virgil) Park, all of Charles City; Gordon
Momberg and Hazel (Mrs. James) Bradshaw, all of St. Petersburg,
Fla.; two brothers and their wives, Ernest and Esther Wertin
of St. Petersburg, Fla., and William and Mary Wertin of North
Riverside, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in
death by two brothers, George and Leo Wertin; and three sisters,
Louise Wertin, Viola Nicholas and Maxine Savage.

Oleva A. Schell, 83, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Feb. 25,
1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.
A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Family
Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev.
John R. Kremer officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later
date in the Osage Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114

A. Schell.
Oleva A. Schell was born April 16, 1913, at Nora Springs, the
daughter of John T. and Ida M. (Theurer) Hofler.
She grew up in Nora Springs, receiving her education from Nora
Springs schools.
She graduated from Clark College in Dubuque with a degree in
business and returned to Nora Springs to work at the Hofler Seed
Company for two years prior to her marriage.
Oleva was united in marriage to Clarence ``Mike'' Schell on
May 3, 1937, at Rockford. They celebrated their Golden wedding
anniversary in 1987.
After raising a family, she enjoyed returning to work at the
Hofler Seed Co., a business owned and operated by herself, her
husband and her brother, John Hofler.
Oleva was an avid bridge player and a longtime member of several
bridge clubs. She loved the challenge of the game, and valued
the close relationship of the club members.
She liked to knit, sew, read, play cards with her grandchildren,
and exchange good stories.
She was active in church, school and civic affairs, participating
in whatever role was needed. She treasured the opportunity to
work with many people on a variety of projects.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clarence ``Mike''
Schell, Nora Springs; four daughters, Mary Lee Schell, Bloomington,
Minn.; Barbara Ware and her husband, John, Okemos, Mich.; Loretta
Grekoff and her husband, Dallas, Shakopee, Minn., and Rita Britton
and her husband, Ken, Eagan, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, Micheal
and Steven Ware, Okemos, Mich.; Todd Grekoff and his wife, Jessica,
Mankato, Minn.; Kim Hinrichsen and her husband, Scott, Farmington;
Troy and Karla Grekoff, Shakopee, Minn.; Mindy Bissonett and
her husband, Rob, Lakeville, Minn.; Karla Grekoff, Shakopee,
Minn.; Ben Britton, Eagna, Minn.; Abigail Britton and her fiance,
Mike Thomas, Allerton; Elizabeth, Sarah and David Britton, all

Raymond Lee Welp was born Dec. 31, 1935, at Kamrar, the son

He was a bus driver for Jefferson Bus Lines.
Ray and his family moved to Nora Springs in 1974.
He was united in marriage to Susan Treloar on July 25, 1981,
at Nora Springs.
He was employed by Fast Food Merchandisers for 21 years, retiring
in August of 1996.
Ray loved race cars, camping and spending time with his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Welp of Nora Springs; one
son, Greg Welp and his wife, Gina, Ventura; one daughter, Lisa
Halbur and her husband, Brian, Manning; two stepdaughters, Heather
Conley, Nora Springs, and Elizabeth Conley, Janesville; one stepson,
Cody Conley, Mason City; five grandchildren, McCayla and Morgan
Welp, both of Ventura; Courtney and Kristina Halbur, both of
Manning; and Ciara Conley, Mason City; one sister, LaVonne Draper

He served in the Vietnam War and was a decorated veteran.
He had lived in Durango since 1985, with his wife, Julie, and
son, Charles.
Steve was a licensed residential real estate appraiser for nearly
20 years and in recent years, a broker with his downtown business,
the Buyers Brokerage.
Prior to living in Durango, Steve and his wife lived in Frisco,
Colo., for 10 years.
Steve was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity at the university.
Besides his wife, Julie Wynhoff Schultz and his son, Charles,
survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Schultz of St.
Joseph, Mo.; his sister, Sara Schultz Nelson of Green Bay, Wis.;
his sister, Amy Schultz Grier of St. Joseph, Mo.; and his brother,

Marguerite enjoyed fishing, dancing and crocheting. She loved
visiting with people.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Wolf and her husband,
Robert, Mason City; a sister-in-law, Alma Campbell, Mason City;
numerous nieces and nephews; and one special great-niece, Debbie
Lancaster, Mason City; and a special friend, Lila Paulsen, Mason
City.
