MASON CITY  



Frances Merle Tade, 94, of 838 Eighth Ave. N.E., died Monday

(Feb. 3, 1997) at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Norman Funeral

Chapel, Lancaster, Mo., with the Rev. Herbert Shafer of Grace

United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating.  Interment

will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Lancaster, Mo.



Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral

chapel.



Frances Merle Tade was born Dec. 26, 1902, near Glenwood, Mo.



Survivors include twin daughters, Nellie Tonita Daugherty and

Luella Lolita Kongable, both of Mason City; one sister, Velta

Sleeth of Centerville; and one brother, Warner Smyser of Centerville.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two

sisters.



The Norman Funeral Home, Lancaster, Mo., is handling arrangements.

Ruth Verna Young, 35, of 824 S. Polk Ave., died Monday (Feb.

3, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.



Funeral services are tentatively scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday

at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St.

S.E.



Visitation will be held after 9:30 a.m. Friday until time of

services.

Elta Avanelle Olson

BELMOND  



Elta Avanelle Olson, 90, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 1997)

at the Belmond Community Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Olaf

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. 

Burial will be in the St. Olaf Church Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Tenold

Funeral Home.



Elta Avanelle Olson was born Nov. 4, 1906, near Zearing, to

George and Nora (McCormick) Eley.  Avanelle graduated from Zearing

High School and received a teaching degree from Drake University.

She taught second grade at Radcliffe, Zearing and Marshalltown.



On Sept. 10, 1942, she was united in marriage to Melvin A. Olson

at Bethany, Mo.  They farmed together on a farm southeast of

Kanawha until 1978, when they retired and moved to Belmond.



Avanelle was a member of St. Olaf Church, where she was an active

member in the women's groups and especially with the quilters.

She was a past member of the Kanawha Women's Club, Home Study

Club, Wright County Chorus and an active member of Wright County

4-H Clubs.



She is survived by her husband, Melvin, of Belmond; stepson,

Clifford Olson and his wife, Joyce, of Kanawha; stepdaughter,

Jean Ann Stevens and her husband, Rollie, of Dallas, Texas; and

grandchildren, Kyle (Stevens) Vandeven and her husband, John,

of Dallas, Texas; Jeffery Stevens and his wife, Stanna, of Arlington,

Texas; Kimberly Stevens of Dallas, Texas; stepgrandchildren,

Jeffery Chelesvig, Bradley Chelesvig and Kimberly Chelesvig,

all of Des Moines; two great-granddaughters, Andrea and Samantha

Stevens of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.



She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister

and one nephew.

Edythe L. Bobst was born Jan. 13, 1900, in Seneca, Ill.



Survivors include four daughters, Doris Passehl of Hampton;

Nada Bottke of Iowa Falls; Amy Campbell of Dows, and Elsie Lycke

of Alden; one son, James Bobst of Hampton; one sister, Iva Lemka

of Alden; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and eight

great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

one great-granddaughter, two sisters and three brothers.

Eleanor Thomsen

GARNER  



Eleanor Thomsen, 96, of Garner, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 1997)

at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert T. Ellis as officiant.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, northwest of Thornton.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel.



Eleanor Opal Thomsen, the daughter of Jesse and Ann (Braga)

Brogan, was born July 31, 1900, near Meservey in Cerro Gordo

County.  At the age of 6 she moved with her family to a homestead

west of Thornton.  She attended the rural schools and graduated

from Thornton High School.  After receiving her teaching certificate

from Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, she taught in the rural

schools of Franklin County.  On Jan. 15, 1920, she was married

to George Alden in Cerro Gordo County. They farmed in the North

Iowa area for many years.  To this union four children were born,

Eldridge, Frederick, Carroll and Robert.  In 1942, Eleanor returned

to Thornton and operated the Thornton Convalescent Home.  On

Aug. 28, 1944, she was married to Chris T. Thomsen in Mason City.

They lived in Waterloo until Jan. 15, 1959, when they moved

to Garner and purchased the Garner Locker Plant, which they operated

until retiring in 1976.  In February of 1992, they moved to Prairie

View Apartments.  In July of 1994, Eleanor moved to Concord Care

Center due to ill health.  She died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997, at

North Iowa Mercy Health Center in Mason City.



She enjoyed visiting her family and friends and was an avid

Hawkeye football fan.



She was a member of the United Methodist Church and U.M.W. and

a former member of Eastern Star Lodge.



Survivors include her son, Eldridge Alden and his wife, Gladys,

of Garner; her daughter, Carroll Lynch and her husband, Marshall,

of Hesperia, Calif.; two stepchildren, Franklin Thomsen and his

wife, Rose Mary, of Davenport, and June Buseman and her husband,

Arthur, of Kesley; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Alden of San Benito,

Texas; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister,

Hazel Wolkin of Tucson, Ariz.

Leona (Barkema) Kuhlers

BUHL, Idaho  



Leona (Barkema) Kuhlers, 85, of Buhl, formerly of the Meservey

and Alexander, Iowa, areas, beloved mother and grandmother, went

to be with her Lord on Monday (Feb. 3, 1997) at the Magic Valley

Regional Medical Center in Twin Falls.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First

Reformed Church in Alexander, Iowa, with the Rev. Gerald Norman

officiating.  Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tenold

Funeral Home, Belmond, Iowa, and at the church one hour prior

to services.



She is survived by her daughter, Norma Jean Keaton and her husband,

David, of Buhl; grandchildren, Robert Lynn, Sharon, Phillip and

Pamela, all of Buhl; brothers, Carl Barkema of Mesa, Ariz., and

Foster Barkema of Alexander, Iowa.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; sisters, Alice

and Florence; and brother, George.



She was born on a farm near Alexander, Iowa, on Jan. 7, 1912,

the fifth child of Hans and Flora (Eden) Barkema.  She graduated

from Alexander High School in 1929 and worked on the family farm

until she married Albert A. Kuhlers on Oct. 29, 1949.  They farmed

near Meservey, Iowa, until 1962 when they moved to Fort Collins,

Colo., where they built and operated the Mountain View Mobile

Home Park.  The two were partners in everything they did until

Albert's death in 1991.  In 1992 Leona moved to Buhl to be near

her daughter and grandchildren.  She especially loved being with

her grandchildren and enjoyed working in her flower gardens.

She was a joy to be around and made the lives of those around

her better.

Clarence A. Olson, 89, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Feb. 4, 1997)

at the Lutheran Retirement Home.



Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the

First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Bents and the Rev. Allan

Stoa officiating.  Burial will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery.



There will be no visitation.  Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home

is in charge of arrangements.



Clarence A. Olson was born April 17, 1907, in Kensett Township,

Worth County.



Survivors include one daughter, Lois Ann Hogen of Northwood

and nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters

and two brothers.

Laurel A. `Doc' Helm

PLYMOUTH  



Laurel A. ``Doc'' Helm, 84, of 1106 Rock St., died Tuesday (Feb.

4, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Plymouth

United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathy Kluis of the Plymouth

United Methodist Church and the Rev. Richard J. Thompson of St.

Matthew Lutheran Church, Dubuque, officiating.  Burial will be

in Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites provided by the

Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 in Manly.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral

Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior

to services at the church on Friday.



The family suggests memorials to the Laurel A. ``Doc'' Helm

Memorial Fund.



Laurel A. ``Doc'' Helm was born Feb. 13, 1912, on a farm near

Plymouth, the son of Clarence A. and Tillie (Rossum) Helm.  Doc

attended schools in Plymouth and graduated from Plymouth High

School in 1930.  He married Laura Schotanus on April 22, 1939,

in Nashua.  Doc was a veteran of World War II, having served

in the U.S. Army.  He was a construction superintendent for Davey

and Moen Construction Co. for 32 years, having supervised the

construction of many buildings in Mason City, including City

Hall, Holy Family Catholic Church and Newman High School.  Doc

also supervised the construction of AT & T microwave towers throughout

the United States.  He was mayor of Plymouth from 1978 to 1992,

served on the North Central School Board from 1969 to 1978, and

was a member of the Oakwood Cemetery Board, Plymouth United Methodist

Church, and church council, Plymouth Lyons Club, Edward Tosel

American Legion Post #110, and served on the boards of the Manly

Nursing Home and Shellrock Manor in Plymouth.  In his spare time,

Doc enjoyed woodworking.



Survivors include his wife, Laura Schotanus Helm of Plymouth;

three daughters, Brenda Thompson and her husband, Rick, of Dubuque;

Debi Latham and her husband, Dan, of Westlake Villege, Calif.,

and Lisa Koppin and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; two brothers,

Dale G. Helm of Plymouth, and Ellsworth Helm of Popejoy; one

sister, Buena Gould of Mason City; and seven grandchildren, Andrew

and B.J. Thompson, Megan, Jillian and Mackenzie Latham and Madison

and Connor Koppin.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

to the Ruth V. Young Memorial Fund.



Ruth was born Oct. 2, 1961, in Mason City, the daughter of Alfred

Young and Mildred Kuykendall.  Ruth grew up in Mason City and

later graduated from Mason City High School.



During Ruth's leisure time she enjoyed reading books, attending

flea markets and rummage sales.  She also enjoyed spending time

with her precious cats, and showing friends and family her salt

and pepper shaker collection.



Ruth is survived by her parents, Mildred Kuykendall of Mason

City, and Alfred Young of St. Paul, Minn.; three sisters, Ellen

Andersen, Mrs. Art (Sharon) Wilde and Ardella Young, all of Mason

City; three brothers, Michael Young and Daniel Young, both of

St. Paul, Minn., and David and his wife, Heather, of Ames; a

very special friend, Jim Malfero of Mason City; 12 nieces and

nephews; and many aunts and uncles.



She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Carolyn M. Brandt was born April 19, 1916, in Altoona.



Survivors include one daughter, Judy Thompson of Clarion; one

son, Gary D. Brandt of Clarion; one sister, Frances Iverson of

Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Lucile Dohrmann of Hampton; one

Stromer of Klemme; and two granddaughters.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Harold L. Waddell was born Dec. 16, 1921, in Mora, Minn.



Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Clarion; five daughters,

Elaina Stansbury of Fort Dodge; Marcy Powell of Davenport; Elena

Rowe of Fort Dodge; Karla Hanson of Des Moines, and Tammy Eivins

of Cedar Rapids; four sons, Harlan Waddell of Clarion; John Waddell

of Spearfish, S.D.; Sam ``Buzz'' Stansbury of Clarion, and David

Stansbury of West Bend; one brother, Ralph Waddell of Kansas

City, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bradford G. Larson, 85, of 905 12th Ave. N.W., Austin, died

Wednesday (Feb. 5, 1997) at Burr Oak Manor Nursing Home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's

Lutheran Church with the Rev. James I. Mikkelson officiating.

Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.  Organist: Neal Erickson;

soloist: Mark Robert. Honorary bearers: Eric Swenson, Lars Swenson,

Cynthia Bellefeuille, Valerie Larson, Chadd Larson, Elizabeth

Larson, Katherine Larson and Rebecca Larson.  Casket bearers

will be Gary Callahan, Larry Callahan, Darrell Larson, Daryl

Stelter, Dennis Stelter and Michael Bellefeuille.



Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin from

5 to 8 p.m. today, and one hour prior to services at the church

on Saturday.



Bradford G. Larson was born Jan. 25, 1912, in Mona, Iowa, to

John and Mary (Bothun) Larson.  He graduated from Otranto, Iowa,

High School in 1931.  Bradford married Lucille Stelter on Jan.

8, 1939, at the bride's home in Otranto.  They moved to Stacyville,

Iowa, and later to Rose Creek, where they farmed.  They moved

to Austin in 1945 where he worked for USEM's and later for Tempo

Department Store.  He retired in the early 1970s.



He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church.



He is survived by his wife, Lucille Larson of Austin; sons and

daughters-in-law, Glen and Sharon Larson of Bloomington, and

Darwin and Pamela Larson of Norwalk, Iowa; eight grandchildren;

son-in-law and his wife, Jerry and Maggie Sprick of Red Wing;

brother and sister-in-law, Myrle and Leona Larson of Austin;

sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Bernice and Johnny Callahan

of Austin, and Gala Stelter of Clear Lake, Iowa.



He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, LaVonne Sprick;

and an infant son.

J. Earl Mason Sr., 98, formerly of 804 15th Place N.E.,  died

Thursday (Feb. 6, 1997) at the IOOF Home.

First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the

Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating.  Interment will be in Union

Mound Cemetery, Sumner.

Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Visitation will continue one hour

prior to services at the church on Saturday.

J. Earl Mason Sr. was born Dec. 7, 1898, south of Indianola

in Warren County, the son of William S. and Elizabeth Mason.

 Earl attended country school and graduated from Eagle Grove

High School in 1919.  He married Neva G. Darnell on July 8, 1926,

at her family's home in Ringsted.  Earl owned and operated the

Algona Hatchery from 1926 until 1939.  In 1939, the Masons moved

to Mason City, where Earl owned and operated J.E. Hatchery and

installed hardwood floors.  Earl was a member of the First United

Methodist Church, Harding Lodge #649 A.F. and A.M., and was a

former member of the IOOF Lodge.



Survivors include his wife, Neva G. Mason of Mason City; two

sons, J. Earl Mason Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Mason City, and

Dr. Robert D. Mason and his wife, Anne, of Cedar Rapids; four

grandchildren, Gregory R. Mason, Roderick E. Mason, Scott Mason

and Paul R. Mason; two nieces, Ila Veldhouse of Clarion, and

Lela Willey of McGregor, Minn.; two great-granddaughters; and

one great-grandson.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond

Mason; and one sister, Mary Streeter.

in Mesa, Ariz.

will be in Visitation Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Hatten

Funeral Home, where there will be a rosary at 3 p.m., and a Scripture

service at 8 p.m.



Cletus F. Hatten was born Oct. 15, 1922, in Britt.



Survivors include his wife, Beverly Jane Hatten; three daughters,

Jane Hatten, Susan Hosek and Nancy Theobald; three sons, Nicholas,

Edward and James; one sister, Ramona Ford; two brothers, Edward

and Donald; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents and two granddaughters.

at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hitesville

Gospel Hall, rural Aplington, with Russell Nesbit, Robert Orr

and Floyd Christopherson as speakers.  Burial will be in the

Hitesville Cemetery.

brother, Rudy Wessels of Allison; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;

and one great-great-grandchild.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers

four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margretha Meyer of

Leonard Johanns was born June 2, 1940, in New Haven.

George Nathan Clark

WEAVERVILLE, Calif. 



George Nathan Clark, 76, of Weaverville, died Friday evening

(Jan. 31, 1997) at his home following an extended illness.



A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 1997,

at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Weaverville.

Bishop Allen Houston officiated.  Memorial contributions may

be made to the Heart Fund or to the Cardiology Unit of Redding

Medical Center.  Arrangements were handled by McDonald-Files

Chapel in Weaverville.



He was born on July 20, 1920, at Villard, Minn.  He spent his

early years in Minnesota and moved to Oregon with his family

in 1952.  He then moved to Weaverville in 1954.



He worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator for the

Trinco Lumber Mill in Weaverville.  He also worked for a short

time on a gold dredge.  He was a member of the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter Day Saints in Weaverville.



George loved spending time with his family and friends, playing

cards, telling jokes, along with tinkering around the house,

yard and garage.



He will be lovingly missed by his wife, Hazel; three sons, Lloyd

Clark of Hillsboro, Ore.; George and Brenda Clark of Drummond,

Okla., and Ray and Karen Clark of Sheffield, Iowa; five daughters,

JoAnne Logan of Enid, Okla.; Shirley and Gene Millard of Yucca

Valley; Linda and Fred Maddox of Weaverville; Roberta Jones of

Phoenix, Ariz., and Marcy and Steve Dorris of Weaverville; 14

grandchildren, Jennie and Jeremy Clark, Sheryl Logan, Karen and

Carey Terribilini, Victor, Jamie, Nathan, and Marjie Maddox,

Felicia Abreau, Monica, Jessica, and Melissa Jones and Robbie

Dorris,; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marjorie

Heft of Marble Rock, Iowa, and Lila LaCount of Wadena, Minn.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan R. and Jennie

Belle (Krieder) Clark; a brother, Lloyd Clark; and a sister,

James William Seim, 73, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Feb.

6, 1997) at Green Hills Health Care Center, Ames.

James William Seim was born June 24, 1923, in Decorah, a son

of Lawrence Helge and Florence (Nelson) Seim.



James married Helen Iverson on March 11, 1949, at Big Canoe

Lutheran Church, Decorah.



He lived in Ames for 30 years.  Prior to living in Ames, James

taught high school in LuVerne, was a junior high principal in

Traer and was superintendent of schools in Ridgeway.  He worked

for the Ames Community School District as an elementary principal

and as director of elementary education and special education.

The last few years were spent as director of special services

and assistant to the superintendent.  James retired in 1985.



He was in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and served as corporal,

serving duty in Italy, Germany, Africa and Austria during World

War II.  He earned the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory

Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three

Bronze Battle Stars.



James loved boating, woodworking and reading newspapers cover

to cover.  He enjoyed his family and his grandchildren.



Survivors include his wife, Helen of Ames and Clear Lake; two

daughters, Becky and Jerry Timmons of Omaha, Neb., and Janet

and David Bunker of Ames; five grandchildren, Cassi, Jodi and

Jacki Timmons, and Matthew and Erik Bunker; one sister, Frances

Headington of Decorah; and three brothers, Bob Seim, Lester and

Frances Seim, and Larry and Arlyne Seim, all of Decorah.



He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Lucille

Ramus of LuVerne, Helen Finholt of Decorah, and Ruth Aakre of

Decorah; and one brother, Charles Seim of Decorah.

F. Keith Harman was born on Aug. 21, 1927, the son of Walter

and Vera (Hodson) Harman in Osage. Keith graduated from Plymouth

High School in 1945. Keith was raised on a farm in Mitchell County

and continued to farm after graduation. He served in the U.S.

Army from 1953-1956, during the Korean Conflict. He was united

in marriage to Elaine R. Ahrens on Sept. 10, 1955, at the Rock

Creek Lutheran Church in Meroa. Keith operated Keith's Standard

Service on 12th Street Northeast and North Carolina Avenue in

Mason City from 1960 to 1980.



He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the V.F.W.



Survivors include his wife, Elaine R. Harman, of Mason City;

two daughters, Janice Flegle and her husband, Don, of Omaha,

Neb., and Gail Kern of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Dennis Harman and

his wife, Sue, of Spencer; seven grandchildren, Travis, Tyler

and Taylor Harman of Spencer, Lauren and Douglas Flegle of Omaha,

Neb., and Patrick and Kathryn Kern of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers,

Eldred Harman and his wife, Donna, of Waterloo, and Donald Harman

and his wife, Nadine, of Marshalltown; one sister-in-law, Cory

The family of Reva Merle Myers has requested that memorial contributions

Reva Merle Myers was born Feb. 27, 1909, in Mason City, the

daughter of Dennis and Lula (Elston) Roderick.



She attended and received her elementary education at the Seventh

Day Adventist grade school in Mason City, and attended and received

her high school education at the Seventh Day Adventist Academy

High School in Nevada. She was united in marriage to Lawrence

Myers on Aug. 25, 1930, in Colo. He preceded her in death on

June 20, 1976. After their marriage they moved to rural Mason

City and together with her husband farmed on the McNider farms

for several years. They then moved south of Mason City where

they continued to farm, renting from the McNider's, until 1953

when they moved to a farm southeast of Clear Lake.  In 1966,

they moved into Clear Lake where she worked at the Mile Post

Truck Stop for several years until her retirement when she moved

to the Lakeland Apartments in Clear Lake. She had been a resident

of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake since 1993.



She enjoyed crocheting and the outdoors, but her great love

and enjoyment was helping her husband on the farm.



Survivors include one daughter, Bonnie ``Amundson'' Evenson

of Clear Lake; one son, Gordon Myers and his wife, Sharon, of

Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Steve Myers and his wife, Lori,

of Clear Lake; Becky Chizek and her husband, Paul, of Clear Lake;

Dr. Dennis Amundson and his wife, Dr. Stephanie Amundson, of

San Diego, Calif.; Donna Amundson of Fond Du Lac, Wis., Jay Amundson

and his wife, Linda, of Clear Lake, and JoDee Cooling of Fond

Du Lac, Wis.; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Gammon

of Oxnard, Calif., and Winona Nielson and her husband, Jim, of

Benson, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Peg Wilkes and her husband,

Tom, of Sun City, Ariz.; as well as other relatives and friends.



Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents;

one brother, Edwin Roderick; and two sons-in-law, Donald Amundson

and Richard Evenson.
