Clarence M. Hemann

STACYVILLE  



Clarence M. Hemann, 78, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 1997) at the Muse

Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Visitation

Church with the Rev. John W. Hemann of Garner officiating.  Burial

will be in Visitation Cemetery.



A rosary will be held at 3 p.m. and a scripture service at 8

p.m. today at the church.



Hatten Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.



Clarence M. Hemann was born May 6, 1918, in Stacyville.  He

farmed in rural Stacyville for 40 years.  He was a lifetime member

of the Catholic Order of Foresters.  His hobbies included playing

cards, visiting and remembering dates.



Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Mary (Gilles) Hemann;

five daughters, Carol and husband Jim Dunlay of Woodbury, Minn.,

Arlene Hausen of Minneapolis, Minn., Phyllis of Des Moines, Patricia

and husband Roger Atherton of Mason City and Lorraine and husband

Mike Bode of Algona; three sons, Wayne and wife Tama of Iowa

City, Stanley and wife Catherine of Mason City and Anthony and

wife Mary Elizabeth  of Seoul, South Korea; two sisters, Helen

Falada of Stacyville and Marie and husband Glen Borchardt of

Mason City; two brothers, Herbert and wife Irene Hemann of Stacyville

and Alfred and wife Darlene Hemann of Stacyville; and 18 grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his father, John N.; mother, Mary;

and brother, Roman.

Wilson R. Ray

GREENE  



Wilson R. Ray, 84, of 205 East South Street, died Saturday evening

(Feb. 8, 1997) at the Liebe Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the

United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gene Burry officiating.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Reid's

Funeral Chapel and one hour before services on Wednesday at the

church.



Wilson R. Ray was born Oct. 15, 1912, near Packard, Coldwater

Township, Butler County, a son of Pleasant ``Ted'' Francis and

Hazel (Wilson) Ray.



He received his education in the rural Coldwater Township schools

and started farming at an early age.  He was united in marriage

to Margaret Early on May 1, 1934, at the Little Brown Church

in Nashua.  Wilson and Margaret farmed in the rural Butler and

Floyd county area until their retirement, when they moved into

Greene.



Wilson will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for

his ability to play practical jokes.  He was a member of the

United Methodist Church in Greene.



Living family members include his loving wife of 62 years, Margaret

of Greene; four daughters, Patricia and her husband William Ziebell

of Springfield, Mo., Rosalind Anderson of Davenport, Barbara

and her husband John Newman of Baltimore, Md., and Debra  Holliman

of St. Louis Park, Minn.; one son, Rollin Ray of Marshalltown;

11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenneth,

and his wife Frances Ray of Wagner, S.D.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret

Hall and Phyllis Burroughs; and one grandson, Kurt Ziebell.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to the American Heart Association or to the family.

RICEVILLE  



Reinhart L. Mans, 82, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 1997) at the Riceville

Community Nursing Home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate

Conception Catholic Church.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Conway Funeral

Home.  There will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4 p.m. and

a scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.



He was born May 7, 1914, in Nicollet, Minn.



Survivors include his wife, Pauline; three sons, John of Riceville,

Dennis of Maquoketa and Tom of Omaha, Neb., and four grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by one grandson, three sisters and

five brothers.

Levi John Sansgard

CHARLES CITY 



Levi John Sansgard, 3-month-old son of Stacy John Sansgard

and Melissa Gale Funte, died unexpectedly Saturday (Feb. 8, 1997)

at Floyd County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John

Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main and Gilbert streets, with the

Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag and the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.



Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage

Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street.  Visitation will continue one

hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.



Levi John Sansgard was born Oct. 19, 1996, at Floyd County Memorial

Hospital.  He was baptized at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church

on Dec. 21, 1996.



Survivors include his parents, Stacy Sansgard and Melissa Funte

of Charles City; a sister, Cheyenne Breanna Sansgard at home

in Charles City; paternal grandparents, Clair and Audrey Sansgard

of Charles City; maternal grandparents, Glenda and Darwin Beatty

of Charles City and Raymond Funte of Osage; Paternal great-grandparents

Ivan and Evelyn Sansgard of Elmore, Minn., and Alta Finlayson

of Glendale, Ariz.; maternal great-grandparents, George and Arlene

Clark of Clarksville, Rose Funte of Charles City, Alice and Darwin

Beatty of Nashua and Dave and Ramona Roeder of Fredericksburg;

two aunts, Tracy Funte of Osage and Angela (Mrs. Troy) Eads of

Houston, Texas, as well as numerous great-aunts, uncles and second

cousins.



He was preceded in death by a paternal great-grandfather, John

Finlayson, and a maternal great-grandfather, Ray Funte.

Dennis Duane Folkerts Sr., 39, of 40542 130 Ave., Leland, died

Saturday (Feb. 8, 1997) at his home.

Methodist Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Jung Sook Kim officiating.

Burial will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral

home, Thompson.



Dennis was born March 2, 1957, in Buffalo Center.



Survivors include his mother, Everdena Folkerts of Thompson;

one daughter, Jacqueline Folkerts of Britt; two sons, Dennis

Duane Folkerts Jr. of Forest City and Curtis Duane Folkerts of

Leland; two sisters, Donna Passmore of North Mankato, Minn. and

Vivian Lara-Jose of Upper Marlboro, Mich.; three brothers, Gary

Folkerts of Kalamazoo, Mich., David Folkerts of Thompson and

Rick Folkerts of Forest City; and one grandchild.



He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Dale J. Heimer, 43, died Friday (Feb. 7, 1997) in a helicopter

crash in Tasmania, Australia.

HAMPTON  



Lucio Salinas, 59, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 1997) at Franklin

General Hospital, Hampton.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's

Catholic Church with the Rev. Gerald Condon officiating.  Burial

will be in the Hampton Cemetery.



Visitation will be held fro 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel

Funeral home.



Lucio was born March 4, 1937, in Poteet, Texas.



Survivors include his wife, Olga Salinas of Hampton; one daughter,

Elsa Salinas of Hampton; one grandchild; two brothers, Rick Salinas

of Hampton and Mecindo Salinas of Charles City; and three sisters,

Antonia Rocha of Hampton and Anita Salinas and Julia Paz, both

of Washington.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Ethel Brown

MASON CITY  



Ethel Brown, 96, a former Mason City resident, died Friday (Feb.

7, 1997) at the Ackley Presbyterian Village, Ackley.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Chapel, Mason City, with the Rev. Merlin

Ackerson of the First United Methodist Church officiating.



Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Interment will be at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.



Ethel was born on June 25, 1900, in Mason City.  She attended

Geneseo Township School and later graduated form Hamilton Business

College with a secretarial diploma.  She faithfully worked for

the Welfare Department at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse until

World War II when she served her country as a WAC,  doing office

work in Australia and New Guinea.



Following her retirement, she spent several years as a full-time

office volunteer with the Methodist Church's Red Bird Mission

at Henderson, Ky.



She returned to Mason City where she lived the rest of her

life except for the time she was in the nursing home.  She was

always cheerful, making the best of whatever she had and wherever

she lived.   She was a willing participant in her daily living

at the nursing home.



Ethel leaves as survivors her sister, Dena, and her husband,

Melvin Clark, of Rockwell, and several nieces and nephews and

many friends.  She was dearly loved by all and will be greatly

missed.



She was proceeded in death by her parents, three brothers and

two sisters.

Hope Warrington

OSAGE  



Hope Aileen Warrington, 95, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 1997) at the

Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion

Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating.  Burial

will be in the Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the family

at the funeral home from 3 to 5 p.m.  The family requests that

memorials be given to the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care

Center.



Hope was born Oct. 28, 1901, at Udell.



Survivors include one daughter, Jane King of Charles City; a

stepdaughter, Lucille Gunsallus of Osage; a stepson, Harold Warrington

of Florence, Ore.; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren;

and many great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, four

children, nine sisters, a brother and two grandchildren.

Georgia H. Bates

MASON CITY  



Georgia H. Bates, 86, of 432 Second St. N.E., died Saturday

(Feb. 8, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First

United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin

Ackerson officiating.  Burial will be in the Crown Hill Cemetery

at Ruthven.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and at the church one

hour prior to services.



Memorials may be given to the Georgia Bates Memorial Fund.



Georgia H. Bates was born April 14, 1910, in rural Ruthven,

the daughter of Myron LeRoy and Etta (Cook) LeClair.  Georgia

graduated from Ruthven High School and Buena Vista College. 

She would later go on to receive additional education at Iowa

State University, Drake University and the University of Northern

Iowa.  Georgia married Leonard W. Bates Feb. 4, 1954, in Mason

City.



Prior to moving to Mason City in 1952, Georgia taught in public

schools for 18 years.  She taught in the Mason City school system

for 22 and a half years, retiring in 1975.  Georgia was a member

of the First United Methodist Church, church circle, National

Education Association, Iowa State Education Education and a retired

school personnel organization and also  volunteered at the MacNider

Art Museum.



Survivors include three daughters, Delma Walsh of Mason City,

Marge Milbrath and husband, David, of Mason City, and Betty Ann

Bates Middleton and husband, Paul, of Akron, Ohio; two sons,

Robert Bates and wife, Midge, of Johnstown, Colo., and Dean Bates

and wife, Iris, of Normal, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; several great-

grandchildren; and two sisters, Myrta Graham of Ruthven and Lois

Rezabek of Northwood.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one daughter.

Edna L. Tew, 70, died Saturday (Feb. 8, 1997) at North Iowa

Mercy Health Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First

Lutheran Church, Clarion, with the Rev. Jerold Dyste officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Willim Funeral

Home.



She was born Dec. 31, 1926, in Corwith.



Survivors include her husband, Herbert Tew, of Clarion; two

sons, Paul Tew and Dwight Tew, both of Clarion; one daughter,

Carol VanDyke of Kieser, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and one great-

grandchild.



She was preceded in death her parents, one son and one brother.

Thomas F. Derenthal

ROCKFORD  



Thomas F. Derenthal, 59, of Brown Deer, Wis., died Thursday

(Feb. 6, 1997).



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Name

Catholic Church, Rockford, with the the Rev. Roger Katz officiating.

Interment will be held at a later date.



Schumburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Mr. Derenthal was born in New Hampton on Aug. 29, 1937, to August

H. and Evelyn L. (Roarty) Derenthal.  He attended school in the

Mason City area after which he entered the Marines in 1956. 

Mr. Derenthal moved to the Milwaukee, Wis., area in 1960 to follow

his trade of machinist.  He resided there until his death on

Feb. 6.



He is survived by his mother, Evelyn, of Rockford; three sisters,

Kae (Mrs. Jim) Milota of Tacoma, Wash., Mary Ellen (Mrs. Mike)

Allison of Rockford and Judy (Mrs. Roger) Boman of Golden, Colo.;

a special friend, Barbara Wiereinski of Milwaukee; and many nieces

and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his father, August.

Gustav J. Lettow

STORY CITY 



Gustav J. Lettow, 85, of Story City, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 1997)

at his home of a heart attack.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

Paul's Lutheran Church in Buckeye, with the Rev. John W. Wernacke

officiating. Burial will be in Buckeye Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at the Bethany Manor

Chapel, Story City, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.



Soderstrum-Larson Funeral Home, Story City, is in charge of

arrangements.



Gustav J. Lettow was born Dec. 5, 1911, near Buckeye, the son

of Otto and Anna (Runge) Lettow.



He farmed and was a carpenter until retiring in 1972.



He married Elsbeth Minnie Zoske on Feb. 26, 1941, in Hubbard.



They lived in Alden, Radcliffe and Buckeye areas until moving

to Story City in 1992.



He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Buckeye, where

he served as head usher for many years.



Gustaf's greatest love was following his family.



He is survived by his wife, Elsbeth, of Story City; a son, Gil

Lettow and his wife, Pam, of Mason City; a daughter, Daneice

Hage and her husband, Ron, of Muscatine; five grandchildren,

Todd (Bonnie) Lettow of Des Moines; Lori (Mike) Moritz of Des

Moines; Jennifer (Kevin) Coster of Cedar Falls; Scott Hage of

Tuscon, Ariz., and Tim Hage of Muscatine; a great-granddaughter,

Erin Elsbeth Lettow of Des Moines; a brother, Elmer Lettow of

Alden; and four sisters, Arlene Kinney of Tuscon, Ariz.; Leona

Bussert of Spencer; and Margie Stensland and Patty Brinkmeyer,

both of Radcliffe.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin

and Everett ``Rusty'' Lettow; and a sister, Luella Lettow.

Oscar William Romer Jr., 53, of Algona, died Saturday (Feb.

8, 1997) at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doug Hoag

of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverview

Cemetery.

Oscar William Romer Jr. was born March 12, 1943, in Algona.



Survivors include four sons, Mike Romer, Algona; Larry Romer,

Bancroft, and Roger Romer and Ervin Romer, both of Marble Rock;

three daughters, Renee Genter, Glidden; LuAnne Tegtmeier, Marble

Rock, and Debra Isebrand, Fenton; 10 grandchildren; his mother,

Elsie Romer, Marble Rock; one brother, Roger Schumacher, Chandler,

Ariz.; and three sisters, Nancy Eisenbacher, Ringsted; Louise

Duryee and Debra Jennings, both of Marble Rock.



He was preceded in death by his father, one sister and one infant

brother.

She married John Ball on March 23, 1927, on the family farm

in Mitchell County.



They farmed in the Carpenter area for over 30 years.



She is survived by one daughter, Virginia Wilkins, Waterloo,;

four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose

Nickerson of St. Ansgar; and two brothers, Wilmer Gerlach, St.

Ansgar, and Gene Gerlach of St. Ansgar.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; one

daughter, Dorothy; one sister, Lucille; and three brothers, Ray,

Earl and Arthur.

RUDD 



Robert L. Straube, 76, of rural Rudd, died Monday (Feb. 10,

1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Chris F. Gugel officiating.

Burial will be in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion

Funeral Home, Osage, and one hour before services at the church

on Thursday.



Robert was born May 5, 1920, near Nora Springs, the son of Arthur

and Lyrle (Baker) Straube.



Robert attended school in Nora Springs and graduated from Nora

Springs High School in 1937.



He married Dorothy Schultz on Sept. 21, 1946, at the Emmanuel

Lutheran Church, Grafton.



They lived and farmed on the same farm stead near Rudd for

over 50 years.



He taught Sunday school and was superintendent at St. Luke's

Lutheran Church, Nora Springs.



He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Osage.



He served on the elevator board in Rudd for a number of years.



He very much enjoyed baseball and watching other sports.



He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Straube, Rudd; one daughter,

Rhonda Groshens and her husband, Douglas, Bancroft; two sons,

Dennis Straube and his wife, Cynthia, Rudd, and Douglas Straube

and his wife, Martha, Rudd; five grandchildren, Dustin and Derek

Straube, Rudd; Terri and Kelli Groshens, Bancroft, and Laura

Straube, Rudd; one sister, Doris Hillmer and her husband, Lyle,

Mason City; and one brother, Glen Straube, Mason City.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Randall ``Randy'' Bird, 50, of 2193 Monroe Ave., Rice Lake,

died Friday (Jan. 7, 1997) at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.



Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 1997,

at Bethany Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gorden Estenson and

the Rev. Rick Lund officiating. Interment was in Nora Cemetery.



Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Appleyard's

Home For Funerals, 19 W. Messenger St., Rice Lake,  and one hour

prior to services at the church.



Randy Bird was born to Albert and Nellie Bird on July 23, 1946,

at Garner, Iowa.



After graduating from Garner High School in 1964, he attended

Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa. He graduated in 1968 with

a Bachelors of Science Degree.



He then entered the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.



On July 12, 1970, he was married to Joan Lynn at Shenandoah,

Iowa.



Randy taught mathematics and coached high school sports at Saydel,

Iowa, for five years.



In 1976, he joined Purina and continued to work for Purina Mills

until 1993 when ill health forced retirement.



He and his family have resided in Rice Lake since 1986.



Randy was an active member and past president of Bethany Lutheran

Church.



Randall ``Randy'' Bird is survived by his wife, Joan, of Rice

Lake; two sons, Second Lt. Matthew Bird of Manhattan, Kan., and

Adam Bird, at home; a daughter, Meredith Bird, at home; his mother,

Nellie Bird of Garner, Iowa; three brothers, Eldon of Bettendorf,

Iowa; David of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Gordon of Cumming, Iowa;

and a sister, Susan Carr of Fairfield, Iowa.



He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Bird.

He was an employee of Hormel having worked there for 36 years.

Max Eugene Goldman was born on Nov. 23, 1917, in Dugger, Ind.,

the son of Frank M. and Dovie (Cooksey) Goldman.



Dr. Goldman entered the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving

as a radioman on an LST.



Max was united in marriage to June Parker on Sept. 6, 1947,

in Pittsfield, Mass.



The couple served in several communities in Iowa, including

Pierson, Storm Lake, Titonka, Forest City, Keokuk, Estherville

and Sioux City. They have made their home in the Lakes area since

1984.



Dr. Goldman received his B.S. from Indiana State University.

He then went to Boston University School of Theology, where he

received his Bachelor of Sacred Theology and his Master's degree.

Dr. Goldman received his Doctor of Ministry at Dubuque Seminary.



Dr. Goldman was a member of Iowa Great Lakes Rotary; Iowa Civil

Air Patrol; Master Mason-Twilight Lodge #329; Advisory Board

of Area Agency on Aging.



He was a delegate to 1995 and 1996 Older Iowans Legislature;

a member of numerous boards of the Iowa Conference of the United

Methodist Church; and served on school boards in the Forest City

and Okoboji school districts. He served faithfully in a wide

range of community services.



Left to cherish his memory are his wife, June; son, Stuart and

his daughter, Abby, of Littleton, Colo.; daughter, Candace of

Berkeley, Calif.; daughter, Jennifer del Pino and her children

Sergio, Christian and Nicole of Miami, Fla.; twin sister, Maxine

Peters of Fort Wayne, Ind.; sister, Evelyn McElroy of Seattle,

Wash; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Richard ``Bud'' Milo Brouwer, the son of Ralph Johanus and Ida

(Schlawin) Brouwer was born May 29, 1916, on a farm east of Garner.



He was confirmed at Peace Reformed Church.



After his mother's death in 1923, he lived and worked with Ben

V. and Iris Greiman.



He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and Garner

Community Schools.



On Feb. 24, 1938, he married Alma F. Jacobsen, southwest of

Garner.



They farmed southwest of Garner until 1980 when they retired

from active farming. They have continued living on the home farm.



Bud loved and spent much time with his family, which came first

in his life.



He was a softball player and enjoyed golfing and fishing.



He was a life-long member of Peace Reformed Church where he

had served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.



He had been a 4-H leader for the Liberty Go-Getters and also

a member of the Garner Lions Club, where he sang in the Lion's

Quartet.



He is survived by his wife, Alma Brouwer of Garner; two sons,

Michael Brouwer and his wife, Kay, of Burlington, and their two

children, Mark Brouwer and Beth Rashid and her husband, Mike;

and James Brouwer and his wife, Cherry, of Bemidji, Minn., and

their son, Andrew Brouwer; three sisters, Iris Greiman of Garner,

Mabel Barz of Klemme, and Meta Roper of Thousand Oaks, Calif.;

and a sister-in-law, Inez Brouwer of Thornton.



He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida Schlawin Brouwer,

Dec. 6, 1923; his father, Ralph Brouwer, Feb. 28, 1963; and seven

brothers and sisters, Elmer Brouwer, Arthur Brouwer, Raymond

to Mason City in 1953.



Norma cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.

the Pricilla's Women's Circle.



Norma was survived by one daughter, Mrs. Victor (Marcia) Frederick

of Manly; one son, Lonnie Bankes of Douglas, Wyo.; nine grandchildren,

Frederick, all of Manly; Christopher, Catherine, Uriah and Kayla

Mathilda Bertha Jorgensen-Tjornehoj Lyford was born Aug. 1,

1918, near Leland, Iowa, daughter of Mandius N. and Bertha Mathilda

(Anderson) Forland.



She attended Lincoln #1 Grade school and graduated from Manly,

Iowa, High School in 1935.



She was united in marriage to Robert Tjornehoj on June 2, 1940.

Robert was a buttermaker by trade and Mathilda did domestic work

for many area families for which she was greatly appreciated.



They lived in various Iowa towns and always enjoyed a circle

of friends wherever they lived. Robert passed away on Dec. 12,

1976.



On July 7, 1984, she was united in marriage to Lowell Lyford

in Denver, Colo.



She is survived by her children, daughter, Joy Lee Jorgensen-Roth

and her husband, George, of Enterprise, Ore.; sons, Dennis and

his wife, Kristine Jorgensen of Dawson, Ill.; David and his wife,

Dianna Jorgensen of Longmont, Colo.; Robert Jorgensen of Ivey,

Ga.; and Dean and his wife, Sue Jorgensen of Tulare, Calif.;

12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her husband, Lowell

Lyford of Battleground, Wash.; his three daughters and their

Melvin Arthur Olson, the son of Andrew and Betsey (Thompson)

Olson, was born Feb. 4, 1903, in Wright County.



He graduated from Waldorf High School and attended Waldorf

College.



He was united in marriage to Carrie Hill on May 22, 1929, at

Belmond. To this union, two children were born, Clifford and

Jean Ann.



On Sept. 10, 1942, he was united in marriage to Avanelle Eley

at Bethany, Mo.



They lived on the family farm southeast of Kanawha until 1978,

when they retired and moved to Belmond. They enjoyed 35 years

wintering in Arizona.



Melvin was a life time member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in

rural Belmond. He loved and supported his church and Norwegian

Heritage. At the time of his death, he was the oldest confirmed

member of St. Olaf Church.



Melvin is survived by his son, Clifford and his wife, Joyce,

of Kanawha; daughter, Jean Ann Stevens and her husband, Rollie,

of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Kyle (Stevens) Vandeven and

her husband, John, of Dallas, Texas; Jeffrey Stevens and his

wife, Stanna, of Arlington, Texas; Kimberly Stevens of Dallas,

Texas; stepgrandchildren, Jeffery Chelesvig, Bradley Chelesvig

and Kimberly Chelesvig, all of Des Moines; two great-grandchildren,

Andrea and Samantha Stevens of Arlington, Texas; and two nephews.

William ``Bud'' Burton Boomhower, 75, of Lake Havasu, formerly

A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at the Methodist

Church in Lake Havasu. The body was cremated.

William Boomhower was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Mason City, Iowa.



He attended Mason City Schools and graduated from Mason City

High School in 1941.

While in Mason City, he was engaged in farming.

Vera Maye Hawbaker Brenton was born May 6, 1901, at Dallas Center,

the daughter of Jacob K. and Clara Robinson Hawbaker.



She graduated from Dallas Center High School and attended Drake

University in Des Moines.



On Dec. 24, 1919, she and Harry L. Brenton were married at Dallas

Center, shortly after he returned from France and World War I.



They moved to Charles City in 1936 where Vera was very involved

in her community.



She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the

United Methodist Women, was a past president of the Eastern Star,

the White Shrine, the Floyd County Historical Society, the Charles

City Women's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary, and the

Fourth District of the State American Legion Auxiliary, was chair

of the 1976 Bicentennial Pageant in Charles City and was a member

of the Cedar Valley Engine Club.



She was a former Rainbow Girls adviser, was an antique dealer

and taught piano lessons.



In 1977, she was named Woman of the Year by the Charles City

Chamber of Commerce.



Living family members include her husband, former Charles City

Mayor Harry L. Brenton of Charles City; a son, Dr. Harold L.

and his wife, Martha Brenton of Emerald Isle, N.C.; a daughter,

Lorna and her husband, Robert Burgraff of New Deltona, Fla.;

five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald

Hawbaker of Dallas Center; and a sister, Mildred Wheeler of Charles

City.

Frances Marie Noftsger Sellers, 81, of 112 N. Devine Road,

Vancouver, Wash., passed away Monday (Feb. 10, 1997) at her home.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City,

Iowa. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery next to her

husband, James Willard (Bill) Sellers who passed away Jan. 29,

1969.



Frances was born March 31, 1915, to Frank and Ida Hendrickson

Noftsger at their home north of Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa.



Her sister, Annie and Oscar Orfield were married that same day.



On Jan. 14, 1935, she married James Willard (Bill) Sellers,

son of Jay and Gertrude Sutherlin Sellers, near Lamoni, Iowa.



To this union were born four children, Robert Willard Sellers,

Richard Walter Sellers, Velma Ann Marie Monek of Vancouver, Wash.,

and Margaret Marie Hollinger, of Mason City, Iowa.



They farmed in Decatur County, Iowa, and in 1942, moved to Vancouver,

Wash.,. and worked in the shipyards. After the war, they returned

to Lamoni and Diagonal, Iowa, farming and boarding several school

teachers.



In 1955 they returned to Vancouver, Wash., where Frances (friends

called her Myrt in Iowa and Franny in Washington) was a dinner

cook for 30 years in Camas, Wash. She retired in 1986 when she

was 71.



She was a member of the Camas, Wash., Moose Lodge #1042.



She lived with her daughter Ann Marie in Vancouver, Wash., who

was born late in life and had been close to her father who passed

away when she was quite young.



She helped Ann Marie raise her family, who she enjoyed so much,

cooking family dinners, cultivating the flowers, visiting with

her friends and playing cards.



She never complained about life.



She was very close to her family, she loved people, was very

kind and thoughtful to everyone.



She developed lung cancer five years ago, had two sets of radiation

treatments, did fairly well until two years ago, when she became

very tired  and could not do much and this sure did not make

her happy (she had always been a busy person)  she went peacefully

and God wanted her.



She wrote her own obituary.



She is survived by all of her children, Robert, Richard, Ann

Marie, and Marie, 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;

several nieces and nephews, close friends, Edith Rodd of Camas,

Wash., Flo Henry of Dallas, Texas; and her faithful Yorkie dog,

Buddy, who will be buried with her.



She was very close to her sons-in-law, Bob Hollinger of Mason

City, Iowa, and Joe Monek of Vancouver, Wash.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill, in

1969, brother, Henry Noftsger; and sister, Annie Orfield.

at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, U.S. Highway 18 and

Clark Street, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial

will be in the Calvary Cemetery, with a graveside flag presentation

conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with a 2 p.m. wake prayer service

conducted by the Sisters of the Presentation and a 7 p.m. parish

vigil service at 7 p.m.
