13, 1997) at Stacyville.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Visitation
Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating.
Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Visitation Church
Hall with a 3 p.m. rosary and an 8 p.m. Scripture service.

Wilfred John Koenigs was born May 30, 1920, in Meyer.
Survivors include his wife, Marcella Koenigs, Stacyville; one
daughter, Mary Medinnus, Adams, Minn.; one son, Joseph Koenigs
of Osage; three grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Goergen,
Adams, Minn., and Sister Cortona, OSF, Dubuque; and two brothers,
Joseph C. Koenigs, Adams, Minn., and Al P. Koenigs, Stacyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one
sister.

Glen H. Shaw, 77, of Orchard, died Friday (Feb. 14, 1997) at
Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Funeral
Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Wegner officiating. Burial
will be in Orchard Cemetery with military rites by the Orchard
American Legion Post #641.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion
Funeral Home and until time of services on Monday.
Glen H. Shaw was born April 30, 1919, in Olney, Ill.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Shaw, Orchard; three daughters,
Betty Starr of Clear Lake, June Edwards of Cedar Rapids, and
Barbara Jefferies of Osage; three sons, Harley Shaw of Orchard,
Howard Shaw of Osage, and Richard Shaw of Orchard; 27 grandchildren;
numerous great-grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Champion, Burt;
and one brother, Carl Shaw, Chula Vista, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, two sisters
and one brother.

Arthur B. Neir, 83, of 604 N. Iowa St., died Friday (Feb. 14,
1997) at a Rochester, Minn., hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Bethany
Alliance Church, with the Rev. Jim McDonald officiating. Burial
will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hauser Funeral
Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from
5 to 8 p.m.. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday
at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church.
Arthur Barth Neir was born April 30, 1913, at Greene.
Survivors include his wife, Marie, of Charles City; three daughters,
Barbara Kock of Charles City, Sharon Adamson of Boone, and Ruth
Nelson of Marion, S.D.; three sons, Stephen Neir of Mankato,
Minn.; Paul Neir of Bedford, Texas, and Dan Neir of Waterloo;
15 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
and a brother, Amos Neir of Charles City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter,
one brother and two sisters.

Frank Eugene Whetstone
BRITT
Frank E. Whetstone, 72, of Britt, died Friday (Feb. 14, 1997)
at Britt.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo
Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Henderson officiating. Burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery with a flag presentation ceremony
by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral
home.
Frank Eugene Whetstone, the son of Roy Elsey and Anna Elizabeth
(Willis) Whetstone, was born Dec. 15, 1924, at Pattonsburg, Mo.
After graduating from high school in Civil Bend, Mo,. in 1942,
he worked for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, Mo.
After enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he received his pharmacist
training at a medical school in Farragut, Idaho. He served as
a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class in New Caledonia from August
of 1943 to July of 1945 and in Shoemaker, Calif., from July of
1945 to 1946.
Due to a service related injury, he was in a U.S. hospital in
Excelsior Springs, Mo., for 18 months.
After the service, he worked part time for Carl Shaw in a gas
station in Pattonsburg, Mo.
On April 26, 1950, he married his pen-pal, Betty May Jorgensen
at her parents' home in Britt. They lived in Pattonsburg, Mo,.
for three months and then moved to Britt where he worked part
time for his father-in-law.
In January of 1952, he became parts manager for Matt Harbacheck
Implement, which later became Majon Motors.
In 1967, he joined the Britt Police Force for one year and then
worked for Pritchard Auto as a parts man for one year.
Frank graduated in 1969 from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.
In 1970, he was appointed by Mayor Ray Baker as Chief of Police
for the city of Britt; a position he held until he retired in
January of 1986.
His hobbies included making over 1,400 doll chairs and beds,
which he gave to children and collecting over 3,000 license plates.
He enjoyed his family, the daily cribbage game, playing bingo
and walking his dog, Ben.
He was a member of the Britt Congregational United Church of
Christ where he had served on the board, belonged to the Britt
American Legion Post #315; was an honorary member of the Britt
Fire Department for his work in getting the ``Jaws of Life,''
had served on the Britt City Council and was a former member
of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Betty May Whetstone of Britt; two
daughters, Robin Frances Bowcock and her husband, Ted, of Clear
Lake, and Roberta Hope Champney and her husband, Guy, of Forest
City; two grandsons, Cory Adam Champney and Clinton Frank Champney;
a sister, Mary Stembridge of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Roy
Whetstone Jr. of Ames, Harold Whetstone of Ames, and John Whetstone
of Lakewood, Calif.; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law;
and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elsie
Ketchum and Frances Musick; and two brothers, Harlow Whetstone,
in infancy, and Clinton Whetstone.

Henry T. Ubben, 92, of Dumont, died Thursday (Feb. 13, 1997)
at the Dumont Care Center.

Rev. Carl Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont
Cemetery.

Henry T. Ubben was born Oct. 18, 1904, in rural Butler County.
Survivors include one son, Robert Ubben, Ackley; one daughter,
Wava Maifeld, Kesley; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;
three brothers, Harm Ubben and Tako Ubben, both of Aplington,
and Harry Ubben, Ackley; and one sister, Emma Harken, Aplington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter,
seven brothers and one sister.

Lorraine Schemmel, 70, of Bancroft, died Thursday (Feb. 13,
1997) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John

will be in St. John Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-
Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a
7:30 p.m. prayer service. There will also be visitation from
8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Lorraine was born on March 31, 1926, at Bancroft.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Lou Droessler of Bancroft;
Janet Denbroeder of Elk Grove, Ill., and Teresa Schmeling of
Emmetsburg; four sons, Frank Schemmel of Marysville, Wash.; Steve
Schemmel of Algona; Dave Schemmel of Gladstone, Mich., and Richard
Schemmel of Flower Mound, Texas; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild;
sisters, Frances Petersen of Emmetsburg, Joan Gochenour of Florida,
and Mary Ann Fangman of Bancroft; and brothers, Harold Hatten
of Florida and John ``Jack'' Hatten of Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandchild,
two sisters and three brothers.

Fred G. Chapman was born March 4, 1922, in Woolstock Township,
Wright County.

of Belton, Texas; and two sisters, Viola Denger of Oxnard, Calif.,
and Barbra Knutson of Granton, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a
twin sister.

Lillian K. Hanson, 78, of 61 Westview Drive, died Friday (Feb.

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John
Gannett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. The body was cremated.

Lillian Katherine Hanson was born April 7, 1918, in Manly, the
daughter of Charles and Minnie (Ross) Rankin. Lillian moved with
her family to Mason City at a young age. She attended and graduated
from Mason City High School in 1936. She worked at the State
Brand Creamery. She married Leonard L. Hanson on Aug. 29, 1940,
in Mason City. Leonard served in World War II and they resided
in Bakersfield, Calif. After the war, they moved to Garner and
lived there for 10 years. They came back to Mason City and Lillian
worked for Sperry and Hutchinson Company (S&H Green Stamps) and
became manager in 1963.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, Perry Hanson and wife Margaret of
Dallas, Texas, Steven Hanson of Bloomington, Minn.; one daughter,
Carol Daman and husband Neil of Round Rock, Texas; four grandchildren,
Brooke and Claire Hanson and Adam and Kate Daman; and two sisters,
Marie Frelund-Pfeil of Mason City and Marjorie Cole of Laytonville,
Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Minnie
Rankin; one brother, Lt. Charles Rankin, Jr.; and one sister,
Viola Pierce.

Bernice Ann (Sido) Paulus was born on May 11, 1912, to Henry
and Mae (Wilson) Sido in the Rockford area. She attended school
in the country school system around Rockford and was confirmed
in the Holy Name Catholic Church. She married Earl C. Paulus
on Nov. 27, 1932. To that union were born 10 children. For most
of their married lives, the couple farmed.
Bernice was a devoted church member being a member of the Altar
and Rosary Society and the Saint Elizabeth Circle. She loved
to garden and enjoyed growing flowers in the house yard.
Mrs. Paulus is survived by children, Janice R. Herman, William
H. Paulus, Robert E. Paulus, Sandra G. Losee, Garry R. Paulus,
Michael D. Paulus and Richard J. Paulus, all of Rockford, Cynthia
D. Goodale of Alta Vista and Rebecca L. Farr of North Platt,
Neb.; a brother-in-law, Ed Dougherty of Rockwell; 41 grandchildren
and 42 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mae; her
husband, Earl; a daughter, Joan Paulus; a son, Dennis, and two
sisters, Winifred Havig and Vera Townsend.

Vilhelm ``Bill'' Christensen, 89, died Saturday (Feb. 15, 1997)
at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton with the Rev. Bob Hetrick
officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Grarup Funeral
Home in Thornton.
Vilhelm ``Bill'' Christensen, son of Jacob and Kristen Christensen,
was born April 9, 1907, at Latimer. He was born in their home
south of Latimer, the second youngest of seven children. He had
three brothers and three sisters. He was educated in Marion TWP,
No. 8 and later at Coulter for sixth, seventh and part of eighth
grade.
Bill's parents moved to Wisconsin in 1922. Bill stayed in Iowa
and lived with Walter and Botilda Holmagaard until he was confirmed
at St. John Lutheran Church. He rejoined his parents when he
was 15 years old. Bill's folks bought an 80-acre farm and he
helped his father on the farm. Milking cows was a big part of
his job. His parents lived in Wisconsin for five-and-a-half years
and then moved back to Coulter.
In 1930, he and his brother Chris and cousin Hans went to Montana.
During the harvest, they hauled wheat with a Model T truck. They
also helped harvest flax.
In 1931, he worked for a farmer in Indiana and returned to Iowa
that fall to pick corn by hand.
In 1933, Bill started farming with this father. Three years
later, the farm was sold and Bill went to work as a carpenter
in Coulter. From there, he began to help build silos. He later
drove a truck for his brother Fred at Coulter. In 1939, Bill
started farming for himself.
On Feb. 7, 1939, he married Alice Wade. The couple had four
sons.
Bill and Alice sold their farm and retired to Thornton in 1972.
In 1990, they sold their home and moved into the Pleasant View
apartments.
Bill was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Senior Citizens
Club. His hobbies included doing jigsaw puzzles and playing cards
with friends.
Bill is survived by his wife, Alice of Thornton; four sons,
Gary and his wife Rose Christensen of Kansas City, Mo., Lynn
and his wife Cindy Christensen of Mason City, John and his wife
Bonnie Christensen of St. Louis, Mo., and Dean Christensen of
Warner Robins, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;
and one sister, Eleonora Kelson of Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-grandchild,
three brothers and two sisters.

James Leroy Havens, 76, died Friday (Feb. 14, 1997) at Belmond.

James Leroy Haven, the son of Roy and Ola (Bowles) Havens, was
born Nov. 21, 1920 at Logan.
He graduated from Logan High School in 1936, and attended Grinnell
College and Commercial Business College in Des Moines. He was
united in marriage to Marian Garver on May 27, 1945, and Jim
started in the dry cleaning business with Marian's father for
nine years at Corydon. In 1956, they came to Belmond and began
the Model Dry Cleaners, which they have operated side by side.
Jim loved his family, spending time teaching them golf and attended
all sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He liked
to bowl and to read.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational
in Belmond, 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Corydon.
Surviving is his wife, Marian; sons, Don Havens and his wife,
Judy of Blemond, Mark Havens and his wife, Terri of Blemond;
daughter, Susan Johnson and her husband, Kent of Wapello; grandchildren,
Rita, Sarah, Michael, Travis and Derek Havens and Andrea and
Karra Johnson; sisters, Jane Kiedaisch of Joliet, Ill. and Annebelle
Mahlmann of Shaker Heights, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, James D.

Gloria was born Aug. 20, 1921, the daughter of John and Jenny
(Read) Jenkins, on the family farm near Mason City. She attended
the Mason City school system and later graduated from Mason City
High School. In 1939 she graduated from Hamilton School of Commerce.
On March 19, 1944, Gloria was united in marriage to Edward
H. Linderkamp at the John Jenkins farm. Gloria was later employed
by the Portland Co-op for 17 years as a bookkeeper. During the
years she worked at the co-op she also helped her husband farm.
Gloria and Edward were involved in Moose Lodge No. 1328 and
Elks Lodge No. 375. They also liked to play cards with friends.
She was an avid bowler who had bowled in many different leagues.
Gloria had a touch for sewing and mending. She was a member
of the quilting circle in Rockwell and did the mending for the
Rockwell Community Nursing Home. She spent a lot of her spare
time crocheting. She had an artistic talent that she shared
with her family. Gloria later got involved with the Retired
and Senior Volunteer Program.
Mrs. Linderkamp is survived by one daughter, Julie Linderkamp
of Des Moines; one grandson, Brian Howe and his wife, Teresa,
of Rockford; and two nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoots and Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Hoots.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward, on
Jan. 1, 1981; one daughter, JenEtta Howe; one son, James; two
sister, Laura Jenkins and Roseann Hoots; one brother, John Jenkins;
and one grandson, Ronald Howe.

Jim worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and later for the Mason
City-Clear Lake Railroad. He retired after 30 years from Wayne
Feeds in Mason City.
Jim enjoyed golfing, woodworking and spending time with his
grandchildren and great-granddaughters.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Gross of Mason City; one
daughter, Jean Marie Sinnwell and her husband, Roger, of Mason
City; three grandchildren, Roberta Sharp, Chris Sinnwell and
Jamie Sinnwell, all of Mason City; two great-granddaughters,
Tori Marie Jones and Katie Lynn Sharp, both of Mason City; one

Linda A. Ervin was born July 2, 1947, at Gloversville, N.Y.,
the daughter of Alphonse and Ana May (Quackenbush) Marroney.
She received her basic education in Amsterdam, N.Y., and later
received advanced training in art and photography in the Job
Corps.
After completion of the Job Corps training, Linda worked at
various jobs in upper New England states area.
On Feb. 6, 1970, she married Robert M. Blong and moved to Mason
City.
On Oct. 22, 1983, she married James E. Ervin at St. Joseph Catholic
Church, Mason City.
Linda operated a day care out of her home for 13 years. She
was a Mary Kay Beauty representative for five years, and was
a representative for Avon products for the last three years.
Linda had been a job site supervisor for Midwest/North Iowa
Janitorial Services Inc. since 1986.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City,
and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for nine years.
She was also active with the Cancer Support Group.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, James E. Ervin
of Mason City; one son, James D. Blong and his wife, Diana, of
Plymouth; one daughter, Tina M. Blong of Mason City; one grandson,
whom she loved dearly, Darin William Blong of Plymouth; her mother,
Anna May Marroney of Irving, Texas; many brothers and sisters
from New York and Texas; many aunts and uncles from New York
and California; and a special aunt, Virginia Glamms of Amsterdam,
N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her father,
Alphonse Marroney, on Oct. 5, 1988.

Olga Bernice Jordahl was born in Newton Township, Winnebago
County, on June 27, 1909, a daughter of Bernt and Bertha (Hanna)
Haugen.
She received her education in rural school and graduated from
Leland High School in 1928. She worked as a hired girl for different
people and on Feb. 16, 1930, she was married to Oscar Jordahl
at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leland.
The couple farmed in Newton Township for a year then began farming
near Winnebago Lutheran Church. Together they raised cattle,
hogs and chickens so there were always chores to do. Olga raised
flowers and kept a large garden in addition to helping her husband
with being caretaker of the Winnebago Lutheran Church and Cemetery.
They later moved to the Winnebago Church 40 acres, renting the
other acres and continuing with the duties at the church. Olga
enjoyed knitting and crocheting things for the children and the
house.
The couple retired from farming and moved into Forest City.
During the last two years, Olga's health had been slowly failing.
She entered the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in October
of 1996. She died there on Feb. 16, 1997, her 67th wedding anniversary,
at the age of 87 years.
She is survived by her husband, Oscar Jordahl of Forest City;
two daughters and their spouses, Jolaine and Arden Tweeten of
Woolstock, and Noreen and Doug Davis of Lima, Ohio; three sons
and their spouses, Burnell and Marie Jordahl of Enid, Okla.;
Owen and Patricia Jordahl of Safford, Ariz., and Weldon and Linda
Jordahl of Forest City; a brother and his wife, the Rev. Allen
and Betty Haugen of Proctor, Mont.; a sister, Muriel Berry of
Henning, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Betty Haugen of Forest City;
13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Olga was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mabel
Hugelen and Eva Johnson; an infant sister, Julia Haugen; two
brothers, Gilmer and Claire Haugen; and a great-grandson, Brandon
Tweeten.

John A. ``Jack'' Mariner, 75, of Britt, died Monday (Feb. 17,
1997) at his home.
Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen
Cemetery, Britt, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick of St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Garner, officiating. Military honors will be conducted
by the VFW, of which he was a lifetime member.

Jack was born July 19, 1921, in Mason City, a son of Wilson
J. Mariner and Myrtle Welsh Mariner.
He married Maybelle Johnson on April 5, 1945. He worked as a
carpenter and was a farmer most of his life. He enlisted in the
Army in June 1940. He was with the 1st Army, 7th Corps, serving
under General Collins as a signalman. He was granted an honorable
discharge from the Army in 1945.
Jack is survived by his wife, Maybelle, of Britt; a daughter,
Ann L. Mariner Smidt and her husband, Jerry, of Britt; two brothers,
Harold and his wife, Irene, of California, and Jay and his wife,
Lubelle, of Minnesota; a sister, Darlene Haller of Minnesota;
three grandchildren who brought a lot of joy into his life, Anthony
D. Smidt and his wife, Monica, of Britt; Loriann Smidt Aukes
and her husband, Troy, of Forest City, and Alanna J. Smidt of
Britt. He was blessed with a great-grandchild, Ashley Nicole
Aukes. Also surviving are his stepmother, Yolanda Mariner of
Mason City; three half brothers, Pete, Gary and Wesley Mariner,
all of Mason City; two half sisters, Lenna Mae and Virginia Blakley,
both of Mason City; two aunts, Mrs. Harold (Lenna) Wolf and June
Durbin; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Shipman of Mason City
and Mrs. Lester (Swede) Ruth Johnson, of California; a brother-in-law,
Peter P. Allos, of California; special nieces, Shirley Olson
of Pella, and Jill Johnson of California; nephews, Anthony Allos,

Daryle ``Butch'' Dean Smith, 49, of Tacoma, died Wednesday
(Feb. 5, 1997).
At the request of the deceased there was no visitation or funeral

Daryle Smith was born March 11, 1947, in Mason City, Iowa, the
son of Eudema Smith and the late Albert Smith.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1965 and graduated
from Portland State University.
He served four years in the Navy, from 1965 to 1969. He received
the Purple Heart in Vietnam while serving. Daryle worked for
the Globe- Gazette while in high school. His employment was for
the State of Washington.
Survivors include his mother, Eudema Smith of 1411 N.E. 16th
Ave., Apt. 114, Portland, Ore. 97232; two sisters, Patricia Sanborn
and her husband David, and Jacquelyn McCoy and her husband Micheal;

Pearl E. Ryder was born Oct. 25, 1903, in Des Moines, the daughter
of Ernest and Hannah (Lundstrom) Christopherson.
Pearl was educated in Des Moines schools, attended business
school in Des Moines and became a successful business woman.
Pearl married Forrest I. Ryder on July 16, 1938, in Des Moines.
They moved to Mason City in 1956, where they owned and operated
United Rental Store until their retirement in 1971.
Pearl was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed traveling. She
and her sister sailed to China in the 1930s to visit her brother
who was in diplomatic service. She and her husband also traveled
extensively.
Pearl was a member of First Congregational United Church of
Christ, a member of the Women's Fellowship Group, and a member
of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #209, of Storm Lake. She was
declared a 50-year member by the Grand Chapter of Iowa.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Maxine Christopherson of
Spencer; a brother-in-law, Emil Carlson of Des Moines; two nieces,
Lois Christopherson of Mountain View, Calif., and Kristi Clapp
and her husband, Dewey, of Stillwater, Okla.; two nephews, Kent
Christopherson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Craig Christopherson
of Dallas, Texas; four grandnephews; and two grandnieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers,

Dorothy Wanda Curtis was born Aug. 17, 1908, in Greene, a daughter
of William and Nellie (Woodling) Curtis.
She received her education in the Greene Public Schools where
she graduated in 1926 and later attended the Waterloo Business
College graduating in 1928.
On Nov. 14, 1925, she was united in marriage to Herbert Leigh
Rodney at Allison. They made their home in Greene until 1929
when they moved to Chicago. For a few years they lived in Cleveland,
Ohio, before returning to Chicago. In 1960 they were divorced.
Dorothy was first employed by Morton Salt Company and later
employed as an executive secretary for the Bessemer Steel Company,
both in Chicago. During World War II she was a member of the
American Women's Voluntary Service. She was last employed for
the Gragg Carpet Company in Chicago until her retirement in 1970.
That same year she moved to the Huntington, Ind., area where
she made her home.
During this time she volunteered her services with the Huntington
County Association of Social Service Agencies, Community and
Family Services Program, Red Cross, and was director and coordinator
of the Food and Commodities Distribution Program. Through the
years she received several recognitions for her outstanding volunteer
services.
Dorothy moved to Greene in August 1995, where she became a member
of the United Methodist Church in Greene by her profession of
faith on Feb. 4, 1997. Her interest included camping, fishing
at Camp Comfort, being an avid reader and playing Scrabble with
the grandchildren.
Living family members include her two daughters and their spouses,
Phyllis and Edward Koegel of LaCrescent, Minn., and Patricia
and John Ditzler of Huntington, Ind.; nine grandchildren; 13
great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Margaret and
Harold Angarola of Mission, Texas; two brothers and their spouses,
Dell and Lucy, and Bob and Phyllis, all of Greene; and a sister-in-law,
Mildred Curtis of Macon, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leo,
Gene, and Claire Curtis; and two sisters, Leah in infancy and

She graduated from Crystal Lake High School. On Sept. 4, 1954,
she married Roy Ausenhus in Woden. The couple lived in Hanlontown
for most of their lives.
Mary enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Hanlontown Garden
Club. Other hobbies included sewing, crafts and cooking. She
also loved church activities. She was a member of Grace Lutheran
Church in Hanlontown.
She is survived by a daughter, Marcia Goodale and her husband,
Virgil, of Mason City; a son, Duane Ausenhus and his fiance,
Monica Schlotterback of Hanlontown; three brothers, Pete Ausenhus
and his wife, Marilyn, of Forest City; John Ausenhus and his
wife, Wilma, of Jamesport, Mo., and Clarence Ausenhus of Cleveland,
Minn.; and two grandchildren, Tammy and Robert Goodale, both
of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy, in 1966;

Clarice Ordella Tenold, 81, of Northwood, died Sunday (Feb.
16, 1997) at the Lutheran Retirement Home.

Church, with Rev. Mark Bents and Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery.

Clarice Ordella Tenold was born on July 21, 1915, in rural Brookfield
Township in Worth County, the daughter of Elmer and Anna Marie
(Kvale) Tenold.
She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through
confirmation in the Bristol Lutheran Church. She attended and
received her elementary education in the Brookfield Township
#4 school system, graduating from Kensett High School in 1934.
After completing her education, she helped her family on the
family farm and also helped her brothers keep house until 1949,
when she moved into Northwood taking care of her mother and father
until their deaths in 1963 and 1973.
She was very proud of the fact that she worked at the Worth
County Fair for several years.
She enjoyed gardening and sewing but her great love and enjoyment
was visiting with her many family members and friends.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and
the ladies circle, former member of the Bristol Lutheran Church
and was a member of the Brookfield 3M Circle for 54 years.
She is survived by one brother, Olger Tenold and his wife, Gaylis,
of Northwood; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Tenold of Northwood
and Opal Tenold of Northwood; as well as many nieces and nephews,
many grandnieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death hby her parents; two brothers, Marvin
and Reuben Tenold; one niece, Mary Lee Tenold; and one nephew,
Dennis Tenold.

Viola Madsen, 78, of 10 South 18th St., died Sunday (Feb. 16,
1997) at her home.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Viola was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Comfrey, Minn., a daughter
of Knute and Elizabeth (Kittleson) Lenning.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Madsen on Sept. 1, 1945,
in Mason City. The couple lived in Mason City for a short time
before moving to Clear Lake, where she resided until her death.
She enjoyed sewing, baking, doing crafts and visiting her neighbors.
She and her husband were also avid bowlers.
She is survived by a son, Gerald Madsen of Clear Lake; a daughter,
Donna McCorkle and her husband, Jon, of Mason City; a brother,
Arthur Lenning of Vallejo, Calif.; a sister, Minnie Findlay of
Mason City; three grandchildren, Kristine Penca and her husband,
Mike; Mary Witt and her husband, Jeremy, and Nicholas McCorkle,
all of Mason City; and three great-grandchildren, Clay Penca,
Maysen Simmer and Paisley Witt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence,
in 1986; five sisters, Olive, Mary, Clara, Olive and Ina; and
four brothers, Ed, Edwin, Clarence and Omar Lenning.

two brothers, Ray Held of Hampton and Robert Hammond of Waterloo;

Helmer Vaage, 87, of Forest City, died Sunday (Feb. 16, 1997)
at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran
Church, with the Rev. David Samuelson officiating. Burial will
be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.
Visitation was held Tuesday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home,
505 N. Clark.
Helmer Vaage was born in Kenmare, N.D,. on Aug. 18, 1909, the
son of Jorgen and Christine (Erickson) Vaage. He graduated from
Fertile High School and attended DeVry Technical Institute in
Chicago, Ill. He was married to Mildred Biegler on June 28,
1931, in Northwood. The couple farmed in the Forest City area
prior to 1944. At that time they continued farming in the Kensett
area until 1960. They moved to Manly where Helmer opened and
operated his TV sales and service business until 1967. He began
working at Winnebago Industries in Forest City and the couple
moved to Forest City in 1968. Helmer retired in 1974. He was
a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He loved to fish and enjoyed
woodworking. He died at his home in Forest City on Feb. 16,
1997, at the age of 87 years.
Helmer is survived by two sons, Roger and his wife, Susan Vaage,
of Marion, and Glenn Vaage of Clear Lake. Also, three daughters
and their spouses, Norma and Eldon Evans of Northwood; Helen
and Richard Holstad of Northwood, and Karen and Mylan White of
Joice; a sister, Mrs. Dena Rollefson of Hanlontown; nine grandchildren,
Marcia Holstad, Kari Hodgson, John and Paul Evans, Christopher,
Timothy, Martin and Brian Vaage and Daniel White; and three great-
grandchildren, Drew Vaage, Ian Evans and Nicolas Vaage.
Helmer was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Hannah
Norem; seven brothers, Engvald, John, Andrew, George, Carl, Nick
and Edward Vaage; and two grandchildren, Russell Holstad and
Jennifer Johnson.

The family of Arthur ``Carroll'' Walker has requested that memorial

Arthur ``Carroll'' Walker was born on Oct. 4, 1911, in Northwood,
the son of Charles and Sara (Dammen) Walker. He attended and
received his education in the Northwood School System. He also
attended CLU at Drake University for two years. He was united
in marriage to Helen Severson on Aug. 6, 1933, in Albert Lea,
Minn. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1977. In 1931,
he became the owner and operator of the Leader Grocery Store
in Northwood until 1941 when he sold his store and began working
in sales for State Farm Insurance Company in Northwood, Decorah
and Marshalltown until 1951, when he started working for the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Department, Bell & Howell Schools,
and Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester, Minn., and Johnson
Pontiac in Rochester, Minn., until 1961, when he began working
at Vance's Jack & Jill Grocery Store in Le Claire, until 1968,
when he went back to Bell & Howell Schools and the U.S. Chamber
of Commerce Business Department until his retirement in 1973,
moving back to Northwood.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood,
Northwood Senior Citizens Center, former member of the Elks Club
and Optimist Club in Marshalltown.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Walker, of Le Claire; two
sons, Thomas Walker and his wife, Erica, of Ankeny, and James
Walker and his wife, Sharon, of Wayzata, Minn.; five grandchildren,
Melissa Hajek and her husband, Randy, of Davenport, N.D.; Pamela
Stewart and her husband, Guy, of Ventura, Calif.; Karen Byrnes
and her husband, Kevin, of Omaha, Neb.; Barbara Broadbear and
her husband, Jim, of Normal, Ill., and Andrew Walker of Ankeny;
nine great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and
a sister, Dorothy, who died in infancy.

Lee M. Jackson was born April 8, 1908, in Kingfisher, Okla.,
the son of Albert and Ora (Olson) Jackson. The family moved
to Story City where Lee graduated from Story City High School.
Lee served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following
his discharge, Lee was a route salesman for Holsum Bakery for
many years in Mason City. He was a member of the VFW and a former
member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Blanche Thompson of Thompson,
and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, four brothers
and two sisters.

Mary was born March 8, 1919, in rural Wellsburg, the daughter

She graduated from Crystal Lake High School. On Sept. 4, 1954,
she married Roy Ausenhus in Woden. The couple lived in Hanlontown
for most of their lives.
Mary enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Hanlontown Garden
Club. Other hobbies included sewing, crafts and cooking. She
also loved church activities. She was a member of Grace Lutheran
Church in Hanlontown.
She is survived by a daughter, Marcia Goodale and her husband,
Virgil, of Mason City; a son, Duane Ausenhus and his fiance,
Monica Schlotterback of Hanlontown; three brothers, Pete Riekena
and his wife, Marilyn, of Forest City; John Riekena and his wife,
Wilma, of Jamesport, Mo., and Clarence Riekena of Cleveland,
Minn.; and two grandchildren, Tammy and Robert Goodale, both
of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy, in 1996;
and three brothers, Ben, Ranke and Wendle.

Esther O. Griffith, 85, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Sunday
(Feb. 16, 1997) at the Heritage Care Center.

to the services at the church on Thursday.
Esther O. Griffith was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Estherville, the
daughter of Bertel and Bell Handeland. She married Ernest Griffith
Sr. on Aug. 23, 1932.
Esther attended school and graduated from Estherville High School.
After living many years in Spirit Lake, and a few years in Newton,
she has spent the last eight years in Mason City.
She was a very devoted Christian who loved to read her Bible
every day. She enjoyed her volunteer work at R.S.V.P. After
church, she would spend Sundays with her family playing dominoes.
Esther will be greatly missed by her survivors, which include
her children, Mary Lambertus and her husband, John, of Emmetsburg;
Don Griffith and his wife, Pat, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bonnie
McMurray of Mason City, and Ernest Griffith Jr. and his wife,
Kathy, of Sioux City; one sister, Mable Cupples of Newton; 16
grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1944;
one son, John, in infancy; four brothers; and four sisters.

Mollie (Erdman) Kalkwarf

Mollie (Erdman) Kalkwarf, 78, of Belmond, died Monday (Feb.
17, 1997) at the Belmond Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John
Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating.
Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold
Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mollie (Erdman) Kalkwarf, the daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth
(Groh) Erdman, was born April 28, 1918, in Maywood, Ill.
She was united in marriage to Ed Schimp on Aug. 14, 1938, and
to this union one son, Larry, was born. After Ed's death, Mollie
continued to live in Belmond and married Ernest Kalkwarf on July
15, 1976, at Belmond. They made their home in Belmond. Ernie
died on April 20, 1987.
Mollie was a cook for many years at the Belmond Schools, was
a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church, and enjoyed attending
church bazaars and craft shows. She loved playing cards with
friends and family and spending time with her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Surviving her are her son, Larry Schimp and his wife, Nancy,
of Belmond; grandsons, Marty Schimp and his wife, Kim, of Williams,
and Michael Schimp and his wife, Tammy, of Hampton; great-grandchildren,
Ryan, Eric, Kevin, Bryce and Molly; sisters, Mary Pringnitz,
Hilda Lee and Minnie Johnson, all of Belmond, and Betty Faulkner
and Ann Pierce, both of Webster City; brother, Harold ``Sonny''
Erdman of Belmond; stepchildren, Mrs. Larry (Janis) Hase of Arvada,
Colo.; Miriam Kalkwarf of Larkspur, Colo.; Mrs. Jim (Adrienne)
Pasquariello of Belmond; Paul Kalkwarf of Golden, Colo.; Merrill

James C. ``Bud'' Anderson was born Aug. 19, 1940, at Manly,
the son of James L. and Ruth (Brown) Anderson.
He grew up and attended school in Manly. He worked at Hosum
Bakery, the Bungalow Restaurant in Forest City as a cook, and
at Como Photography as a supervisor.
As a volunteer, he managed the Caboose Museum in Manly for several
years.
``Bud'' was an avid CBer and a member of the North Central Iowa
CB Club. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and ``fixing things.''
He also loved spending time with his great-nephew, Jacob.
He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Anderson of Manly; his sister,
Ruth E. Anderson of Mason City; a niece, Lori Cooper, Mason City;
a nephew, Doug Cooper, Manly; great-nieces and nephews, Lacy
and Jacob Cooper, both of Mason City; Michelle Drilen of Bjourn,
Norway, and Brandee and Jesse Cooper of Manly.

Wilbur S. Overgaard, 83, of 14602 Balsan Ave., Ventura, died
Saturday (Feb. 15, 1997) in Mission, Texas.

Wilbur was born March 30, 1913, in Ventura, the son of John
and Margaret (Ashland) Overgaard. Wilbur graduated from Ventura
High School in 1931, and then attended junior college in California.
Wilbur married Cleo Coe on Jan. 15, 1938, in Mason City. He
was a charter member of the Ventura Gun Club, belonged to the
Masonic Lodge, and was a past member of the Ventura School Board,
and the Ventura United Methodist Church. Wilbur farmed and was
a carpenter and contractor.
Wilbur is survived by his wife, Cleo Overgaard, of Ventura;
four children, Margaret Welter of Monticello; John Overgaard
and his wife, Virginia, of Ventura; Russell Overgaard and his
wife, Gail, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Janis Atichison
and her husband, Dwight, of Lakeville, Minn.; one sister, Alice
Ray of Glendale, Calif. He was grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather
of four.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
