John J. Severson

MASON CITY _ John J. Severson, 59, 1432 Second St. S.E., died Saturday (Aug. 23, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. in the Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the John J. Severson Memorial Fund.

John J. Severson was born Aug. 16, 1938, in Waterloo, the son of Stanley and Edythe (Whitman) Severson.

John graduated from Clarion High School in 1957, where he competed in wrestling, was a state qualifier, and continued to enjoy the sport throughout his life.

John was a crafted drywaller in the Mason City area for over 30 years.

John married Corrine Lilleskau on Nov. 7, 1958, in Clarion.

Survivors include one son, Steve Severson, of Mason City; one daughter, Carolee Swarm and her husband, Jeff, of Bettendorf; two grandsons, Jorden and Drake; his mother, Edythe Severson of Clarion; one sister, Judy Rumley and her husband, Don, of Mason City; a special friend, Cheryl Cooper, Mason City; nieces, Dawn and Debbie; and nephew, Larry.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley; maternal and paternal grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.

James F. Overby

MARBLE ROCK _ Funeral services for James F. Overby, 84, of 712 Bradford Street, Marble Rock, will be 7:30 p.m. today, Aug. 26, 1997, at Reid_s Funeral Chapel, in Marble Rock, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Masonic services will also be conducted by Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock. Following services the body will be cremated.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to service time at Reid_s Funeral Chapel, in Marble Rock.

James Fred Overby was born Oct. 3, 1912, in Dubuque, the only son of Dyas and Gertrude (Baehler) Overby, and died Sunday (Aug. 24, 1997) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

He was a graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree and later a Masters Degree from the same university. On Feb. 14, 1940, he was united in marriage to Inez Dorothy Snowden at Dorchester, Mass. To this union were born two children: Lynne and David. He worked as a forester for the United States Government at various locations in the states until being inducted into the United States Army on Aug. 1, 1941. He served as Captain with the 76th Artillery Division in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe receiving three Bronze Battle Stars. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 26, 1946.

In 1947, he and his family moved to Marble Rock where he taught science classes in the Marble Rock Public School and later in the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock School District, retiring in 1978.

Jim was a local Scoutmaster for nine years and Jr. Rifle instructor for the NRA for several years. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping.

He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice at Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. on March 8, 1949, passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on April 12, 1949 and raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on May 10, 1949. He served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge and Treasurer for many years. He was a former member of the Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Living family members include his loving wife of 57 years: Inez of Marble Rock; his son, David, of Dubuque; son-in-law, William Burcham, of Seattle; and two granddaughters, Abigail of Iowa City, and Daphne of Clinton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughter, Lynne Burcham in 1990.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the James F. Overby Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Charles W. Trader Jr.

MASON CITY _ Charles W. Trader Jr., 52, of 3234 Brandywine Road, died Saturday (Aug. 23, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with a 7 p.m. Masonic Funeral rite and again on Wednesday morning. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Additional visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Melson Funeral Home at Pocomoke City, Md. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bethany Methodist Cemetery with military honors.

Charles was born on April 4, 1945, in Cumberland, Md., the son of Dr. Charles W. And Jean (Scott) Trader Sr.

He lived most of his life in Maryland, graduating from Pocomoke City High School and Towson State University.

He honorably served his country during the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He served with the 14th Artillery, 198th Light Infantry Division of the Army as a First Lieutenant.

Charlie worked for Martin Marietta in Maryland for 13 years, until moving to Iowa in 1986 and joined the Lehigh Portland Cement Company of Mason City. He loved his job and was responsible for many policies, procedures and was the Supervisor of Technical Quality Control. He also was responsible for testing new raw materials and fuels, organizing the laboratory and purchasing new equipment.

Charles Trader Jr. and Linda S. Hardingham were united in marriage on June 26, 1987, at Pocomoke, Md. She brought two children to the family and in early 1990, they had a son who was Daddy_s pride and joy. Charles and Linda enjoyed family, friends, traveling, golf and swimming. Charles was a giver to all of his work associates, his Masonic organizations and anyone who was in need of his time.

Charlie was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served as the chief operating officer for Benevolence Masonic Lodge #145 A.F.&A.M., Benevolence Chapter #46 RAM, Mason City Council #45 R&SM, Antioch Commandery #43 KT, North Central Scottish Rite Club and Patron of Unity Chapter #58 OES and he was Rainbow Dad for Amy when she was the head of Mason City Assembly #45. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite, El Kahir Temple, and served on the advisory council of Demolay to which Mike belongs, the Iowa Association of Past Commanders, Iowa York Rite College, the North Iowa Shrine Club and is a dual member of Austin Council #7 RAM. In August of 1996 he was installed as the Most Illustrious Grand Master of Royal and Select Masters of Iowa. Charlie received numerous special recognitions in Masonry through all of his memberships. Charles was also a member of the Mason City Elks Lodge #375.

Charles is survived along with his wife of 10 years, Linda; his mother, Jean Trader of Pocomoke City, Md.; one son, Charles W. Trader III; one stepdaughter, Amy and her husband, Chad Arndt; one stepson, Michael Kassakatis, all of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Michelle and her husband, Ron Foreman, Frankfort, Del.; one brother-in-law, Gary and his wife, Karin Hardingham, Ellicott City, Md.; one sister, Donna Jean and her husband, Wayne Harnett, Dover, Del.; one brother, John Scott and his wife, Margaret Trader, Hagerstown, Md.; one stepgrandson, Caleb Arndt; four nieces, Kelly Lynn Harnett, Sarah and Emily Hardingham, Ashley Foreman; and two nephews, John Scott Jr. and David Trader.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Charles W. Trader Sr., in August of 1996.

Anne T. Mullen

MASON CITY _ Anne T. Mullen, 94, of Mason City, died Saturday evening (Aug. 23, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Rockwell Cemetery, with the Rev. Randy Nielson, pastor of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, officiating. The cremated remains will be buried next to her husband.

Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Anne was born on July 28, 1903, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Charles and Katie (Martin) Russell.

She attended schools in the Runnels area where she grew up. She was united in marriage to Owen E. Mullen on July 16, 1920, at Montezuma. They then lived in the Des Moines area until moving to the Rockwell and Mason City area 69 years ago.

She was employed as a nurses aide at Mercy Hospital for about 10 years. She retired in 1968.

She enjoyed fishing with her husband in the surrounding area and on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and spending time alone.

Anne is survived by several nieces and nephews who include Mrs. Mary Sharp, Mason City; Mr. And Mrs. Ray (Wilma Faye) Freel, Des Moines, and Mr. And Mrs. Bill (Lucille) Yanoski, Mason City; many grand nieces and nephews; and many great grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1965; one brother, Willis Baker; one niece, Viola Mae Nelson; and one nephew, John Nelson.

Jerome W. Mackin

OSAGE _ Jerome W. Mackin, 83, of Osage, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 1997) at the Osage Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Father Philip Recker officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

Jerome W. Mackin was born July 5, 1914, at Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Osage; one daughter, Meredith Macdonald, of Virginia Beach, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

J. Clifford Morrow

HAMPTON _ J. Clifford Morrow, 87, of Hampton, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 1997) at home.

Inurnment services will take place at a later date in Anoka, Minn.

Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

J. Clifford Morrow as born March 15, 1910, in Anoka, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Morrow, Hampton; two sons, James Morrow of Ramsey, Minn., and Scott Morrow of Becker, Minn.; two daughters, Jean Cobb, New Lennox, Ill., and Rosie Francis, Grand Island, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Inez Graham

BURT _ Inez Graham, 82, of Burt, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 1997) at the Heritage Nursing Home, Bancroft.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Susan Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Inez was born May 31, 1915, in LuVerne Township, Kossuth County.

Survivors include one son, Roger Graham of Cumming Ga.; four daughters, Geneva Wentworth, Ames; Denise Struck, Storm Lake; Shirley Meyer, Cherokee Village, Ark., and Doris Nutt, Titonka; 22 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Lewis, Westside; and three sisters, Helen Batt, Boone; Dorothy Chambers, Boone, and Beverly Wegner of Humboldt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

Gordon Atherton

CHARLES CITY _ Gordon Atherton, 87, of 1864 Highway 218, died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn., with the Rev. Daniel D. Baker officiating.

Mary A. Bruning

ALGONA _ Mary A. Bruning, 85, of Algona, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3

p.m. Parish rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Parish prayer service.

Mary A. Bruning was born March 14, 1912, in St. Benedict.

Mae E. Hendrikson

NORTHWOOD _ Mae E. Hendrikson, 93, formerly of Northwood, died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn., with the Rev. Daniel D. Baker officiating. Burial will be in the London Deer Creek Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood and one hour prior to service time at the church on Thursday.

The family of Mae E. Hendrikson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn., in her memory.

Mae E. Hendrikson was born on Aug. 8, 1904, in Duncombe, in Webster County, the daughter of Fred and Hannah (Pierson) Coe. During her formative years her family moved to Emmet County and later to Worth County where she received her formal education in the rural schools. In 1925, she was a member of the Northwood graduating class.

After graduation, she was employed at Fort Dodge.

She was united in marriage to Philip C. A. Hendrikson on March 24, 1926, at the Silver Lake Lutheran Parsonage in rural Northwood. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1985.

After their marriage, several years were spent in Albert Lea, Minn., and then together they farmed northeast of Northwood in Deer Creek Township for a number of years. In 1954, they moved to 304 N. 8th St. in Northwood.

Mae was a life-long member of the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn. She was active in church work as a Sunday school teacher, circle member and leader. She also was a member of the Ladies Aid and served as president of the organization. In addition, she participated as a member of the Deer Creek Valley Church Building Committee.

She demonstrated pride as a homemaker and enjoyed baking, gardening, food preservation, and taking care of small children.

Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Phyllis Oetken, and her husband, Armand, of Mason City; a grandson, Terry F. Oetken and his wife, Sue, rural Northwood; two great-granddaughters, Sherri and Kati Oetken, rural Northwood; a brother, Lee Cole, of Carol Stream, Ill.; four sisters, Mrs. Ollie Cook, Glenville, Minn; Mrs. Clinton (Ruth) Stemsrud, Webster City; Mrs. Bernie (Clarice) Markwardt, Webster City, and Mrs. Frances Hansen, Portland, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Weieneth, Ankeny, and Mrs. Eva Hendrikson, Austin, Minn.; and a host of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Philip, on Feb. 16, 1985; her brother, Harold Cole, in 1976, her sister, Lucille Bickford in 1961, and her sister, Mary Carlson, in 1984.

Evelyn L. Sirmon

CLEAR LAKE _ Mrs. Evelyn L. (Welty) Sirmon, 86, 807 N. Sixth St., died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City. Following cremation, there will be a memorial service held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville, N.Y.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to the Evelyn L. Sirmon Memorial Fund.

Evelyn was born April 29, 1911, in Portville, N.Y., the daughter of James and Irma (Morris) Tillotson. She graduated from Portville High School.

Evelyn married Clifford Welty in Olean, N.Y. , and they lived in the Olean and Bradford, Pa., area. To this marriage, their son, Donald L. Welty was born.

Evelyn married J.W. Sirmon and they moved to Niagara Falls, N.Y. , and lived there until her moving to Clear Lake in 1990.

Evelyn enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, reading and traveling.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Donald L. Welty and his wife, Carol, Clear Lake; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, one niece and one great-granddaughter.

Elias Roland "Shorty" Klinefelter Jr.

BELMOND _ Elias Roland "Shorty" Klinefelter Jr., 68, died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) at his home in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ken Fineran officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Elias Roland "Shorty" Klinefelter Jr., the son of Elias and Helena (Pearson) Klinefelter, was born Dec. 10, 1928, at Alexander.

He attended and graduated from the Alexander High School in 1946.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in May of 1946, and served two years during World War II, serving in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Pasadena.

Shorty was married to Ruby Wagoner on April 19, 1949, in Belmond. He worked at General Mills in Belmond, was plant manager for Midwest Egg Processing Plant in Alexander, owned and operated the Mello Maid Cafe in Belmond, worked for Iowa Mold & Tool in Garner, and most recently at Eaton Corporation in Belmond.

After his retirement, he enjoyed his hobbies, reading, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his friends and family.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ruby; daughter, Toni Anderson and her husband, Jeff, of Belmond; a son, Michael Klinefelter and his wife, Marcia, of Shell Rock; grandchildren, Erika, Josh, Shelley and Blair; and sisters, Bernadine Chandler, Mildred Dorr, La Vonne McCoy and Jeanette Schroder, all of Belmond.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son; a sister, Evenette; and an infant brother.

Gordon B. Atherton

CHARLES CITY _ Gordon B. Atherton, 87, 1864 Highway 218, rural Charles City, died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home of heart failure.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with the Rev. Jack L. Ivey of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Charles City, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

There will be no visitation. Other arrangements are incomplete at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.

John William Pixley

NORTHWOOD _ John William Pixley, 72, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 1997) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center in Manly.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Bents officiating. Burial will be in the Stateline Cemetery, rural Northwood. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

John William Pixley was born in Manly in Worth County, on Sept. 15, 1924, the son of Glenn and Beva (Godfrey) Pixley.

He was baptized on May 9, 1937, at the First Methodist Church, in Northwood, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on May 18, 1948, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. He attended and received his education in the Northwood-Kensett School System. After completing his formal education, he helped his Dad on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Lillian Inez Anderson on June 24, 1944, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Albert Lea, Minn., by the Rev. Melford S. Knudson.

John and his family moved to Deer Creek where he was employed by the Deer Creek Creamery, hauling milk for the farmers and cheese to Pine Island, Minn. He also did trucking for the farmers for about six years. He and his family moved to Northwood on April 4, 1953, where he worked as an assistant manager for the Northwood Co-op Elevator until his retirement in September of 1984.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Northwood Volunteer Fireman Department, Farm Bureau and Odd Fellows Lodge.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping with his family and friends, playing cards, music and gardening.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lillian Inez Pixley of Northwood; his mother, Beva (Godfrey) Pixley of the Lutheran Retirement Home, in Northwood; five sons and one daughter, Jerry L. Pixley and his wife, Fran, of Northwood; Dennis L. Pixley of Northwood; Galen J. Pixley of Northwood; Earl W. Pixley of Northwood; Michael L. Pixley, of Palmdale, Calif.; and Sharon A. Peterson and her husband, Dennis A., of Albert Lea, Minn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Pixley and his wife, Verna, of Northwood; one sister, Virginia Berry and her husband, Russell, of Dike; several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Pixley; and one twin daughter, Sandra Kay Pixley, who died in infancy.

CLARION _ Harold A. "Dutch" Jung, 91, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 1997) at the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen, of Clarion; one daughter, Judy E. Sheffield, of Boyden; one sister, Florence Anderson, Charles City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Rose Ann Tickal Spinka

CEDAR RAPIDS _ Rose Ann Tickal Spinka, 74, a resident of the Williamsburg Care Center, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday (Aug. 25, 1997) in St. Luke_s Hospital, following a long illness.

Born Aug. 14, 1923, at Mason City, Rose married Jim J. Spinka on Dec. 28, 1940, at Iowa City. He died in 1960.

Mrs. Spinka worked as a custodian at Iowa Electric and then at Armstrong_s Department Store, retiring in 1975.

Rose loved to cook and enjoyed collecting cook books.

LITTLETON, Colo. _ Arnold Ray Coe, 72, of Littleton, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Aug. 17, 1997, by accidental drowning, at Albuquerque, N.M.

A funeral Mass was held on Aug. 21, 1997, at St. Mary_s Catholic Church, Littleton. Interment was at Littleton Cemetery, Littleton.

Arnold Ray Coe was born April 22, 1925, in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Mason City High School.

Arnold is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane Lambert Coe, of Littleton; one son, Michael West Coe; and one daughter, Cathleen Ann Coe, of Littleton; several grandsons; and several granddaughters; and one sister, Sarah Coe Peterson, of Britt, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Albert West and Etta Towsley Coe; one stepbrother, Lester Towsley; one brother, Donald Albert Coe; and one grandson, Tommy Maesta, of Littleton.

John William Pixley

NORTHWOOD _ John William Pixley, 72, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 1997) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center in Manly.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Mark Bents officiating. Burial will be in the Stateline Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., and there will be further visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

John William Pixley was born in Manly in Worth County, on Sept. 15, 1924, the son of Glenn and Beva (Godfrey) Pixley.

He was baptized on May 9, 1937, at the First Methodist Church in Northwood and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on May 18, 1948, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood. He attended and received his education in the Northwood-Kensett School System. After completing his formal education, he helped his Dad on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Lillian Inez Anderson on June 24, 1944, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Albert Lea, Minn., by the Rev. Melford S. Knudson.

John and his family moved to Deer Creek where he was employed by the Deer Creek Creamery, hauling milk for the farmers and cheese to Pine Island, Minn. He also did trucking for the farmers for about six years. He and his family moved to Northwood on April 4, 1953, where he worked as an assistant manager for the Northwood Co-op Elevator until his retirement in September of 1984.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Northwood Volunteer Fireman Department, Farm Bureau and Odd Fellows Lodge.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping with his family and friends, playing cards, music and gardening.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lillian Inez Pixley of Northwood; his mother, Beva (Godfrey) Pixley of the Lutheran Retirement Home, in Northwood; five sons and one daughter, Jerry L. Pixley and his wife, Fran, of Northwood; Dennis L. Pixley of Northwood; Galen J. Pixley of Northwood; Earl W. Pixley of Northwood; Michael L. Pixley, of Palmdale, Calif., and Sharon A. Peterson and her husband, Dennis A., of Albert Lea, Minn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Pixley and his wife, Verna, of Northwood; one sister, Virginia Perry and her husband, Russell, of Dike; several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Pixley; and one twin daughter, Sandra Kay Pixley, who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Herbert G. Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale, with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with an Elks service beginning at 6 p.m. Further visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

John R. Colby was born Sept. 28, 1933, in Houston, Texas, son of Colburn Joseph and Brenda (Rogers) Colby. He married Dena Kramer Riggins in 1977, in Clear Lake.

John graduated from high school in Oklahoma City and attended Oklahoma State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1962.

Mr. Colby served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958 and from 1962 until 1966. He served in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces, Green Beret group and was medically retired at the rank of Captain, Infantry, in 1966.

Survivors include his wife, Dena Riggins Colby, Mason City; one daughter, Heidi Colby Flanagan and her husband, Michael, Fox River Grover, Ill. Heidi was born Feb. 13, 1963, in Fayetteville, N.C. Also one son, John Colby II and his wife, Tari, of Des Moines. John was born Sept. 8, 1964, in Clinton, Okla. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Ashley and Cali Flanagan, both of Fox River Grove, Ill., and Alexis and Abigail Colby, both of Des Moines; two stepchildren, Sharon Setzler, Mercer Island, Wash., and Dennis Riggins, Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepgrandchildren, Michele Riggins, Phoenix, Ariz., and Brian Setzler, Portland, Ore.; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Terra Setzler, Portland, Ore.; one niece, Brenda Marsh; and one nephew, Jed Slocum.

Maxine was born April 2, 1928, in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of William L and Mathilda M. (Dieterich) Lonergan. She was baptized and confirmed at the Osage Lutheran Church.

She was raised in Mitchell County and attended schools in Mitchell, Osage and Orchard before moving to Mason City with her parents in 1945.

Maxine married Darold Miller on April 19, 1947, at the Radio Chapel in Mason City.

Maxine was a longtime resident of Mason City and a member of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Darold Miller, Mason City; daughters, Carolyn Miller, Mason City, and Wendy Hegtvedt and her husband, Mike, Mason City; sons, Rick Miller, Mason City, and Jim Miller and his wife, Carla, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Damon Torres, Stacy and Amy Hegtvedt, Kelly, Jeremy, Jordan and Madison Miller; one great-grandchild, Melissa Mae Torres; brother, William Lonergan, Rose Creek, Minn.; sister, Ila Ebbers, Mason City; brother, Charles E. William James Hutchins was born May 6, 1906, the son of James and Alice Elizabeth (Tims) Hutchins, in Egham, in Windsor, Surrey, England.

As a child, Bill came to the United States with his parents and sister in 1912. They arrived in Boston and traveled by train to Mason City. Bill attended Mason City schools.

Bill owned and operated Bill_s Camera Store in downtown Mason City for 40 years, retiring in the mid-1980s.

Bill married Winifred Grupp on June 30, 1935, in Mason City.

Bill also served in the United States Army during World War II from March 1944 to August of 1945.

Bill was a lifetime member of St. John_s Episcopal Church. He also helped found a local camera club and was also a member of several other camera clubs.

Survivors include one sister, Gladys Richards, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Winifred, in 1983; one sister, Rose Elizabeth Preston; and one brother, Ernest E. Hutchins.

Wayne T. Wonsmos

CLEAR LAKE _ Wayne T. Wonsmos, 66, of 409 S. Ninth St., died Thursday (Aug. 28, 1997) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Wayne was born Jan. 25, 1931, in Mason City, the son of Albert and Bernice (Polsdofer) Wonsmos. He attended school in Meservey and Sheffield. He served in the United States Army.

On Sept. 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Hidding in Princeton, Mo.. The couple moved to Clear Lake in 1959.

Wayne was employed at Jerry_s Body Shop for 38 years. Following that, he was self-employed for five years in Thornton, in a business known as Wayne_s Auto Body. He retired due to ill health.

He was an easy-going man who was known for his willingness to help everyone. His hobbies included fishing, wood working and golf.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Debbie Friest of Mason City and her friend, John Harbacheck, Mason City; and Valerie Williamson and her husband, Ray, of Des Moines; his mother, Bernice Wonsmos of Mason City; a brother, Richard Wonsmos and his wife, Darlene, of Thornton; a sister, Lois Nielsen and her husband, Dale, of Forest City; and five grandchildren, Derek Friest, Mindy Friest, Steven Williamson, Matthew Williamson and Alison Williamson.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Gertrude Katherine Garnass

MANLY _ Gertrude Katherine Garnass, 94, of Manly, died Friday (Aug. 29, 1997) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

The family of Gertrude Katherine Garnass has requested that memorial contributions be made to Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly in her memory.

Gertrude Katherine Garnass was born on Dec. 20, 1902, in Marcus, the daughter of George and Rosina (Stoecker) Greenwalt. Gertrude lived all of her life in Iowa and moved to Manly in 1917, where she attended and graduated from the Manly High School in 1920. She also attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Before her marriage she worked in the offices of People Gas and Electric Company, which is now Interstate Power Company, in Mason City and Manly. She was united in marriage to Ole Garnass on May 1, 1942, at the Manly English Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1983. Gertrude had been a resident of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center since Oct. 18, 1991.

She enjoyed crocheting, handwork, cooking and flowers, especially roses.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, Willing Workers Circle at the church, Manly Garden Club, Rebecca Lodge in Manly, Manly Senior Citizens Center and several card clubs, and was a 50-year member of Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include a sister, Rosalie Greenwalt of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly; two stepsons, Arnold Garnass and his wife, Zola, of Manly and Oren Garness of Des Moines; a stepgrandson, Jim Garnass and his wife, Marcia, of Manly; a stepgranddaughter, Sandra Eyler and her husband, Jerry, of Appleton, Wis.; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Erik and Leif Garnass and Stacy and Dean Eyler, as well as other relatives and friends.

KLEMME _ Alta Grace Sturgeon, 94, of Klemme, died Friday (Aug. 29, 1997) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jerry Robetson of the United Methodist Church in Klemme officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery, rural Rockwell. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

Alta Grace Sturgeon was born on Sept. 3, 1902, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Thomas and Lottie (Van Horn) Barlow. she received her education in Cerro Gordo Community School and graduated in 1918. After completing her education, she worked at The Outing Club in Clear Lake. She was united in marriage to Russell Sturgeon in 1922. He preceded her in death in 1940. Alta also worked for many years as a clerk for the Clear Lake Bakery until her retirement in 1967.

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, baking pies and canning fruits and vegetables.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme, the church circles and Our Day Out Club, also in Klemme.

Survivors include two grandsons, Robert Gretillat and his wife, Terri, of Mason City, and Tom Gretillat and special friend, Robin, of Madrid; four granddaughters, Sandy Iehl of Mason City, Donna Kaduce and her husband, J.R., of Mason City, Carol Snider and her husband, Mike, of Klemme and Diane Cooley and her husband, Mark, of Lake Mills; eleven great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Barlow of the Willow Creek Health Care Center in Mason City, as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Marjorie Sturgeon and Dorothy Gretillat; two great-grandchildren, Lisa Gretillat and Annalisa Cooley; one brother, Melvin; and one sister, Maude.

Bessie Golbuff

BRITT _ Bessie Golbuff, 88, died Friday (Aug. 29, 1997) at Westview Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, Britt.

Bessie Mildred Lackore Golbuff was born May 25, 1909, at Hayfield.

Survivors include three sons, Dale Golbuff of Albert Lea, Minn., Gary Golbuff of Rodman and David Golbuff of Ft. Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Archie Lackore of Winona, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an infant granddaughter, an infant brother and three sisters.

M. E. "Van" Van Sickel

DES MOINES _ M.E. "Van" Van Sickel, 80, formerly of New Hampton and longtime resident of Sheffield, died Friday (Aug. 29, 1997) in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Hampton, with the Rev. David Bergsdrom officiating and the Rev. Daniel Vojtz and the Rev. Bernard Obser assisting. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Milan Eugene "Van" Van Sickel was born on Nov. 12, 1916, at Stahl, Mo., the son of Clem H. and Josephine (Cater) Van Sickel. He was the oldest of four children. He moved with his family in 1927 to Conrad, where he graduated from high school in 1934. During the late 1930s, with the country in depression, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) building public works projects throughout the Midwest and learning the building profession. It was while living in Sheffield and working on the dam to create Beeds Lake that he met LaVon Ahrens. They were married Oct. 6, 1940, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Sheffield.

After commencement of World War II, Van joined the Navy "Seabees" construction force where he served in Hawaii and on Iwo Jima, leaving the service in late 1945 as a chief builder. Van and LaVon returned to Sheffield after the war where he worked for a time for construction businesses until 1971, building local Sheffield landmarks such as the First United Methodist Church, United Bank and Trust building and the Sheffield Post Office. In 1971 he went to work for the Farmers Home Administration as the construction inspector for the northeast Iowa district and the family moved to New Hampton.

His wife, LaVon, died in 1981. He continued to work for FmHA until retiring in 1986.

Van was active in the Lions organization in both Sheffield and New Hampton and received special recognition for 50 years of service in 1995. He also served many years as a Little League coach, was a Sunday school superintendent at Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield, was active in Trinity Lutheran Church at New Hampton and was active in the senior citizens in New Hampton.

Survivors include sons, Michael and wife, Lori, of Herndon, Va., John and wife, Pat, of Palo, David and wife, Barbara, of Des Moines, and Eric and wife, Nancy, of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Hilma Hays, and her husband, Wendell, of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVon; parents; one brother, Ellis; and one sister, Nola Ann.

Loretta M. Andon

TACOMA, Wash. _ Loretta M. Andon, 97, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 29, 1997) at Orchid Park Nursing Home, Tacoma, Wash.
