Clair E. Thomas

MASON CITY _ Clair E. Thomas, 70, of 1310 Third St. N.W., died Thursday (July 30, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jack Gannett officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Clair E. Thomas Memorial Fund.

Clair E. Thomas was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Walter and Carrie (Fiero) Thomas.

Clair attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1945.

Clair served in the U.S. Calvary from 1945-1946.

He returned to Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College and then Grinnell College, graduating in 1951.

He worked in Chicago, Algona, and returned to Mason City in 1957 to work with his father at Thomas Electric, where he was actively involved until his death.

Clair married Marie Soursos on Aug. 15, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Clair enjoyed golfing, woodworking, gardening and growing green plants.

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them in their activities.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He served on the Mason Township School Board and the H.E.W. Board. He was a former member of the Elks and Kiwanis Clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Thomas, Mason City; one son, Randi Thomas and his wife, Wanda, Mason City; one daughter, Jo E. Hain and her husband, Doug, of Nora Springs; five beloved grandchildren, Brandon, Nickolas and Chelsi Thomas, and Heidi and Kelly Hain; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters and their husbands, Ruby and Howard Kudej and Nelda and Charles Smith.

Donald R. Schulte

MANLY _ Donald R. Schulte, 61, of 3560 Lark Ave., Manly, died Wednesday (July 30, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with a 6 p.m. Moose service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Memorials may be given to the Donald R. Schulte Memorial Fund.

Donald R. Schulte was born on Sept. 19, 1935, on the family farm west of Manly, the son of Earl and Pearl (Garl) Schulte.

Don attended country school in rural Manly. Don served in the United States Army in 1958.

Don farmed all his life and the last 11 years he also worked at North Iowa Mercy Hospital in the building service department.

Don married Marlene Tanner on Feb. 6, 1955, in Manly, Iowa.

Don loved rebuilding and tinkering on old tractors and he loved the outdoors. He also loved people and made friends wherever he went.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Moose Lodge.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Marlene Schulte, of Manly; two daughters, Judy Schulte, Manly, and Nancy Dodge and her husband, David, Boca Raton, Fla.; two granddaughters, Brooke and Kristen Dodge; one brother, Truman Schulte, Manly; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marvin and Virgil Schulte.

Harold O. Lien

MASON CITY _ Harold O. Lien, 82, of 328 21st St. S.W., died Thursday (July 31, 1997) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and until time of services on Saturday.

Memorials may be given to the Harold O. Lien Memorial Fund.

Harold was born Oct. 29, 1914, in rural Hartland, Minn., son of Christian O. And Leatha (Williams) Lien.

He moved to Mason City in 1924 and attended school here.

Harold was married to Zona B. Bell, on Aug. 27, 1936, at Albert Lea, Minn.

He worked for Holsum Pan O Gold Bakery for 36 years and for the Clear Lake Bakery for 11 years, retiring in 1978.

He was an avid Colorado Rockies fan and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his son, H. Jack Lien and his wife, Karen, Mason City; daughter, S. Kay Flores and her husband, John, Mason City; granddaughters, Jodi Wendel and her husband, Steve, Mason City, and Kim Mariner and her husband, David, Mason City; one grandson, Jay Lien, Mason City; five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gertrude Lien, Ontario, Ore., Vivian Bell, Mason City, and Norma Bell, Clear Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Zona, on Sept. 10, 1978; two brothers; and six sisters.

Esther Holmes

CLEAR LAKE _ Esther Holmes, 80, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 29, 1997) at Integrated Health Services, Des Moines.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and will continued until time of services on Saturday.

Elnora Esther Holmes was born July 22, 1917, in Mason City, the daughter of Herman and Tillie (Aswegen) Beenken.

She married Harry Holmes on March 10, 1934, in Mason City.

She and her husband farmed in the Mason City and Clear Lake area. They moved into Clear Lake in 1953.

She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, gardening and she loved to cook.

Survivors include three children, Lindy Lee Holmes and his wife, Pat, Rolla, Mo., May Lois Helvik and her husband, Kevin, Fort Dodge, and Harry Martin Holmes and his wife, Carolyn, Birdsboro, Pa.; one sister, Ida Thompson, Sequim, Wash.; 18 grandchildren, Lindy L., Sidney, Paul, David and Valerie Holmes, Dorothea Henderson, Diana Lee, and Carey Ward Pope, Allyn and Kevin Roberts, Debra Hawkinson, Renee Marrs, Lorna Smith, Daniel Hansen, Sarah Moen, and Jon, Michael, and Brent Helvik; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Fay Marrs; and an infant son, Follett; and several brothers and sisters.

DES MOINES _ Grace T. Woolery, 99, of Des Moines, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at the Ramsey Nursing Home, Des Moines.

MASON CITY _ Richard K. Carey, 57, of Rapid City, S.D., died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at Fort Mead Veterans Administration Medical Center, Sturgis, S.D.

ALLISON _ John Buss, 83, of Allison, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at the Waverly Hospital.

Esther Marie Riggins

HAMPTON _ Esther Marie Riggins, 98, of Hampton, died Thursday (July 31, 1997) at the Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Michael Riggins officiating. Burial will be in the West Fork Cemetery, rural Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Esther Marie Riggins was born June 11, 1899, in Franklin County.

Survivors include three sons, Keith Riggins, Waterloo, Stuart Riggins, Hampton, and Glenn Riggins, Albuquerque, N.M.; one daughter, Jean Enders, San Francisco, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vera Kueffeer, Hayward, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

Lowell Jorges

HAMPTON _ Lowell Jorges, 72, of Hampton, died Thursday (July 31, 1997) at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, with the Rev. Ed Clevenger officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories, Waterloo.

Lowell Jorges was born Dec. 25, 1924, in Aredale.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry E. Jorges and Douglas D. Jorges, both of Hampton; one daughter, Charleen Folkerds, Hampton; one stepdaughter, Terri Homan, Waverly; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Earla Morehouse, Dumont, Lois Weiss, Charles City, and Lola McKee, Aredale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, two brothers and three sisters.

Gladys L. Monson

ALGONA _ Gladys L. Monson, 70, of 320 N. Jones, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Douglas Hoag officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Wesley.

Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.

Gladys L. Monson was born Aug. 1, 1927, at LuVerne.

Survivors include three sons, Leonard Pesicka Jr., Algona, Loren Pesicka Sr., Burt, and LeRoy Pesicka, Bode; two daughters, LeAnn Juchem, Graettinger, and Lorna Hurlburt, Algona; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ines Lamb, Algona, Lorraine Anderson, Woolstock, and Joanne Frerickson, Webster City; and her father, Delbert Fosnaugh, West Bend.

She was preceded in death by her father, husband, infant son, three brothers, one sister and one great-granddaughter.

Carol Kindred Palmer

DES MOINES _ Carol Kindred Palmer, 88, of 3520 Grand Ave., Des Moines, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church

There will be no visitation. The body was cremated. Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Acres.

Mrs. Carol Kindred Palmer was born in Parkersburg.

Mrs. Palmer moved to Des Moines with her late husband in 1988 from Clear Lake, Iowa. She had lived in Mechanicsville, Earlville, Mt. Vernon, Decorah, Marshalltown, Indianola, Fayette, Waverly, Sioux City, Jefferson, Mason City, and Ventura, Iowa.

Her first husband was the Rev. Arthur Kindred and after he passed away, she was married to the Rev. Howard Palmer.

As a minister_s wife, they served churches in several communities.

She taught school as a young woman and after marriage, she was a homemaker.

She was active in the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, and the Chapter LE of P.E.O.

She is survived by three sons, Jeremy Kindred of Hana Maui, Hawaii, Michael Kindred of Columbus, Ohio, and Stephen Kindred of New York City, N.Y.; one brother, Kellogg Hunt of Tallahassee, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Virgil R. Benson

FOREST CITY _ Virgil R. Benson, 79, of Forest City, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at the Manly Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, with the Rev. Kenneth Suetterlin officiating. Burial will be in the Crystal Township Cemetery, Crystal Lake.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Virgil Raymond Benson, the son of Raymond and Marie (Rinker) Benson was born Jan. 23, 1918, on a farm in Winnebago County.

He attended the rural schools of Winnebago County. He farmed with his parents and later on his own.

In 1945, he moved to Chicago where he worked at International Harvester and Martin Oil.

On Jan. 21, 1950, he was married to Doris Mitchell in Chicago. The couple moved to Forest City where he farmed.

On Sept. 3, 1984, he was married to Emily VanLent at his farm.

He enjoyed gardening, nature and raising animals, especially exotic animals.

He is survived by his wife, Emily Benson of Forest City; a daughter, Rita Benson of Clear Lake; a son, Ron Benson and his wife, Marilee, of Becker, Minn.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Gannon and her husband, Steve, of Cedar Rapids, and Dawn Levenhagen and her husband, Mark, of Cresco; a stepson, Darrell Ginapp and his wife, Bernadette, of Rockwell; seven grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Jay Benson, of Forest City; a sister, Opal Seeberger and her husband, Bob, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, Nov. 1, 1981; parents; and a sister, Viola Moen.

Elinor Lauritzen

SHEFFIELD _ Elinor Lauritzen, 69, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Jim Gockenouer officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Elinor Lauritzen was born on Oct. 27, 1927 in Thornton, the daughter of Emil and Hannah (Smith) Jacobsen. She attended the Thornton Public School system graduating with the class of 1945. She was united in marriage to Burger Lauritzen on July 28, 1956 in Forest City and they made their home farming just west of Sheffield. Elinor enjoyed flowers, bowling, playing bingo and cards with her family and friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Hobbiebrunken and her husband Ken of Thornton; one son, Bart Lauritzen and his wife Lanette of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Travis and Trisha Hobbiebrunken of Thornton and Caitlin Lauritzen of Clear Lake; one sister, Florine Peters and her husband Ernest or Thornton; three brothers, Hans Jacobsen and his wife Velma of Thornton, Alvin Jacobsen and his wife Mary of Torrance, Calif., and Irvin Jacobsen and his wife Luella of Honolulu, Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother.

ALLISON _ John Buss, 83, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Allison United Church of Christ with the Rev. Paul Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.

John was born Nov. 10, 1913 in Allison.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Buss of Allison; two daughters, Joan Homer of Dumont and Helen Fleshner of Dumont; three sisters, Katie Dralle of Allison, Edna Williams of Allison and Grace Allison of Parkersburg; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

CLEAR LAKE _ Richard D. Balvin, 72, of 109 35th Place W., died Saturday (Aug. 2, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Phillip Ellsworth Sorensen

ALBERT LEA, Minn. _ Phillip Ellsworth Sorensen, 68, of 503 Clausen Dr., died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at Rochester Methodist Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minn. with the Rev. Linda Gunderson officiating. Burial will be at Central Freeborn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Phillip E. Sorensen was born on April 1, 1929 in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Soren and Fannie (Peterson) Sorensen. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Albert Lea, Minn. Phillip was united in marriage to Orva Sorbo on May 30, 1948 at the Emmons Lutheran Church. He farmed in Bancroft Township for many years and he worked in road construction for Sorensen Brothers. Phil also owned and operated Sorensen Sanitation in several area towns and later worked for the Albert Lea Bus Company as a school bus driver. Phil loved to golf and spend time outdoors, enjoying the beauty of nature. He served a President of the Golden K II, Kiwanis Club of which he was a charter member, and has been a longtime member of Central Freeborn Lutheran Church.

Phil is survived by his wife, Orva of Albert Lea, Minn.; children, Dianne and husband Gary Thompson and their children, Aaron and fiancé, Heather Hull, Abbie and finance, Chad McGregor, and Jennifer all of Albert Lea, Minn.; Janet Demmer and her children, Xan, Corey, Zachery and Jaala of Mankato, Minn.; Pattie and her husband Paul Hoffman and children, Kari, Heidi, Brady and Riley all of Owatonna, Minn.; Wayne and wife Julie Sorensen and children, David, Nicole and Adam all of Albert Lea, Minn.; Cheryl and husband Dean Braget and children, Jordan, Taylor and Noah all of Albert Lea, Minn.; and Liza Sorensen of Albert Lea, Minn. Sister, Marion Hanson of Albert Lea, Minn.; brother, Richard and wife Ruth Sorensen of Albert Lea, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Myra Richardson, Maevis and husband James Adams, Norlan and wife Marge Sorbo and Sidney and wife Betty Sorbo; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Soren and Fannie Sorensen.

It is the request of the family that memorials be directed to the "Central Freeborn Church Building Fund" or "Youth For Christ."

Richard D. Balvin

CLEAR LAKE _ Richard D. Balvin, 72, of 109 35th Place West, died Saturday (Aug. 2, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a prayer service beginning at 4 p.m. The Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Wayside Chapel of First United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

WESLEY _ Donald "Don" Erdman, 56, of rural Wesley, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral home with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Don was born on Feb. 1, 1941, on the family farm where he lived all his life.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; four sons, Donald Jr. of Des Moines, Chief Petty Officer Randy of San Diego, Calif., Sgt. Steve of Roland and Jon of Duncan; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

James A. Robinson

FOREST CITY _ James A. Robinson, 82, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 1997) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., with the Rev. George Kalb officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

James Arthur Robinson was born June 17, 1915, in Hancock County.

Survivors include one son, Ronald Robinson of Forest City; one daughter, Barbara Hinders of Woden; four grandchildren; and many stepchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, a sister and a brother.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas J. Anderson and the Rev. Charles Woolery officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Chapel, and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Ramsey Home, 1611 27th St., Des Moines, in Grace_s name.

Grace was born June 14, 1898, the daughter of Anderson Tolbert and Kathrine (Harrison) Jeffers, in Fulton, Mo.

She attended Fulton Public School and later graduated from George R. Smith College, Sedalia, Mo.

While living in Fulton, she was an active member of the St. James Methodist Church where she was the pianist for the adult choir. She also taught school in the Missouri School system.

On Sept. 4, 1923, Grace was united in marriage to Wood Woolery in Fulton, Mo. The couple later moved to Mason City, where Grace became a member of the Union Memorial Church and then later a member of the First United Methodist Church. She spent a lot of time working with different church groups.

When not at church, she spent her time with her flower gardens and working in the yard. And she always looked forward to her grandchildren coming to visit in the summer time.

Grace is survived by one son, Wood Woolery Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Holly and her husband, Howard Burns of Hagerstown, Md.; and Wood Woolery III and his wife, Maria, of St. Joe, Mich.; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Woolery was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, and two brothers.

Leota Bookout

MASON CITY _ Leota Bookout, 83, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Aug. 3, 1997) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, where other arrangements are incomplete.

BRITT _ Graveside services for Donald E. Park, 80, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Rockwell, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be held at the Municipal Building, immediately following the services.

Donald E. Park died on April 5, 1997, at the McAllen Heart Hospital, Mission, Texas.

Eldon Harold Vroman

CLARION _ Eldon Harold Vroman, 88, of 1857 Cornelia Dr., Clarion, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at St. Mary_s Hospital, Mayo Medical Center, Rochester, Minn., After a brief illness.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 1997, at the First Presbyterian Church, Dows, with the Rev. Susan DeNio officiating.

Eldon H. Vroman was born Dec. 1, 1908, in Blanche, Neb., the son of Lucius Cicero Vroman and Grace Emogene Bullock. In early childhood, the family moved to Burlington, Wash., where he graduated from Burlington High School.

He worked at Northern State Hospital, Sedro Woolley, Wash., where he met his wife, Mariam Marcella Drury. They were married May 11, 1935, on Whidby Island, Wash.

During World War II, he was a civilian flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Vroman moved to Melbourne, Iowa, where he was a flight instructor at the Melbourne Airport.

In 1948, he relocated to Dows, where he established the Vroman-Janssen Insurance Agency. He continued in business until 1970, when he retired to St. Petersburg, Fla., and Lake Cornelia, Iowa.

He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, served on the Dows City Council; was president of the Dows Commercial Club; and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Mr. Vroman was known as an avid golfer throughout his life and designed the layout for the Dows Golf Course.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam Vroman, Lake Cornelia and St. Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters, Katherine Cohen and her husband, Jared, Virginia, Minn., and Marsha Mott and her husband, Russell, Clear Lake; and five grandchildren, Nathaniel Vroman Greenwood, Jedediah Drury Greenwood, Honora Haws Greenwood, Adam James Mott, and Andrew Vroman Mott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Richard D. Balvin

CLEAR LAKE _ Richard D. Balvin, 72, of 109 35th Place West, died Saturday (Aug. 2, 1997) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a 4 p.m. prayer service, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Riverside Cemetery Chapel, Marshalltown.

Visitation will begin 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Riverside Cemetery Chapel, Marshalltown, until time of services.

Richard D. Balvin was born July 29, 1925, in Marshalltown, son of Edward and Anna (Polak) Balvin.

He married Effie M. Tigges on Dec. 29, 1948, in Marshalltown.

Richard grew up in Marshalltown and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1943.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific.

He then graduated from Bradley University, in Peoria, Ill.

Richard worked for Cherry Burrell Company in Cedar Rapids from 1952 until retiring in 1989.

After retirement, he and his wife moved to Clear Lake.

Richard was an avid golfer. He enjoyed fishing and collecting sea shells.

Survivors include his wife, Effie M. Balvin, Clear Lake; one daughter, Janet Wiskus and her husband, Wesley, Clear Lake; one brother, Donald Balvin and his wife, Doris, of Plano, Texas; three aunts, Rose Vajgrt, Mabel Polak, and Gerri Polak, all of Marshalltown; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard K. Carey

MASON CITY _ Richard K. Carey, 57, of 3711 Canyon Lake Dr., Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 1, 1997) at Forte Meade Veterans Administration Medical Center, Sturgis, S.D.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wayside Chapel, United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites at the graveside by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Richard K. Carey Memorial Fund.

Richard K. Carey was born Oct. 13, 1939, in Mason City, the son of Kenneth and Opal (Doidge) Carey.

Richard attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1957.

Richard worked for a short time at Dwyer Aircraft, before he entered the United States Air Force.

He served from January of 1962 to October of 1965, serving in Thailand.

After the service, he worked at Dwyer Aircraft in Clear Lake, until 1979.

He then worked for the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, Kansas City, servicing their aircraft. He later transferred to Houston, Texas until he retired in 1990.

Richard returned to Clear Lake and then to Rapid City, S.D.

Richard loved flying and was a HAM Radio Operator.

He was a life member of the V.F.W., in Mason City.

He is survived by his mother, Opal Carey, Mason City; one brother, Bill Carey and his wife, Mary, of Rapid City, S.D.; two nieces, Nancy Pawlowski and her husband, Pat, of Belle Fourche, S.D, and Sara Volk and her husband, Steven, Rapid City, S.D.; two nephews, Jon Carey and his wife, Brenda, Aberdeen, S.D., and Mark Carey and his wife, Rita, Rapid City, S.D.; five great-nieces, Amber, Stacy, Rylee, Hailey, and Rikki; and four great-nephews, Jeromy, Greg, Zachery and Ryder.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Carey in 1984; and one niece, Linda Carey.

Christopher Bodensteiner

RICEVILLE _ Christopher Bodensteiner, 82, of rural Riceville, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 1997) at home.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Riceville, with the Rev. John Moser and the Rev. Peter Bodensteiner officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

Christopher Bodensteiner was born May 7, 1915, in Ossian.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bodensteiner, Riceville; four sons, Chris S. Bodensteiner of Loveland, Colo., Thomas Bodensteiner, Clear Lake, Paul Bodensteiner and James Bodensteiner, both of Riceville; four daughters, Mary Laskowski, Midland, Texas, Margaret Gaia, Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Hanlon, Tulsa, Okla., and Ann Blickenderfer, Charles City; 13 grandchildren; six brothers, Leonard of Decorah, Marcellus of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Hugo of Clermont, Leo of Iowa Falls, the Rev. Peter Bodensteiner, Lawler, and Cletus of Long Beach Calif.; and four sisters, Agnes Winter, Earlville, Evelyn Hawkins, Ossian, Lucille Fanning, Timonium, Md., and Olivia Everitt, Fayette.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donald E. Rigdon

MASON CITY _ Donald E. Rigdon, of Mason City, died Monday (Aug. 4, 1997).

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the J.J. Moran Funeral Home, Decatur, Ill.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to Intergenerational Day Care Center or Visiting Nurses Association, both in care of St. Mary_s Hospital, Decatur, Ill.

Donald E. Rigdon was born May 21, 1929, at Decatur, Ill., the son of Austin D. Rigdon Jr. And Lucille Mundwiler Rigdon.

Donald graduated from Decatur High School in 1948.

He served in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of staff sergeant in medical services. He served active duty in Kearney, Neb., Austin, Texas and in Korea during the Korean War.

He married Mary Margaret Mills of Mason City, on Feb. 29, 1952, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

Donald retired from Washington National Insurance Co., on Nov. 25, 1988, after 35 years of service.

Donald enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing the accordion, all types of music and traveling. Most of all, Donald enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife, daughter and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary of Mason City; daughter, Melinda M. Lipka; grandsons, Donald J. Smalley and Ryan M.A. Lipka; his aunt, Helen Richardson, Uncle Thomas (Ed) Rigdon and his wife, Marilouise; and many cousins, all of Decatur, Ill.

Donald will also be sadly missed by his extended family in Mason City, Iowa, including the Rye, Mills and Hegenbarth families.

Dr. William G. McAllister

MANLY _ Dr. William G. McAllister, 77, of Manly, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, 1997, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, with the Rev. David Olson, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Manly Cemetery with military honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 of Manly.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.

The family of Dr. William G. McAllister has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6200 Aurora Ave., Des Moines, Iowa, or to the American Kidney Foundation, 7315 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, Md., in his memory.

Dr. William G. McAllister was born on July 1, 1920, in Springview, Neb., the son of William and Muriel (Snyder) McAllister.

He attended and graduated from Sioux City Central High School in 1938.

He attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for two years, then transferred to the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor_s degree in chemistry in 1942. He attended graduate school at Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis., but enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942., when World War II broke out.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Nepper on March 30, 1943, in Mapleton, Iowa.

During his tenure in the Navy, he was enrolled in Midshipmen_s School at the University of Notre Dame and later took a two year aerology course for weather forecasting, at the University of Chicago.

He served primarily in the South Pacific as a weather officer on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Hornet. As a weather forecaster, he was one of the first people to detect a hurricane on radar.

He was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant receiving two bronze stars, silver star, American Theatre Victory Medal, as well as other commendation letters.

After his honorable discharge, he enrolled in the University of Iowa Medical School, graduating in 1950.

He started general practice in Ida Grove in 1951, moving to Manly in 1954. He retired from his practice there in 1980.

Dr. McAllister was not only Manly_s longtime town physician, but made significant contributions in the field of education and in numerous community betterment projects.

Active in civic affairs, he helped bring about the formation of the North Central School District, and served on the North Central School Board from 1959 to 1964.

He served on the steering committee that secured passage of a bond issue to build a new North Central High School at Manly. He also was instrumental in organizing a wrestling program at North Central.

In 1966, when North Iowa Area Community College was organized, he was elected to the North Iowa Area Community College board and became its first president, which he held for six years, and served on the North Iowa Area Community College board from 1966-1980. McAllister Hall, housing classrooms in the sciences, math, health and business, was named for him in 1973.

He was active in numerous civic organizations and was instrumental in establishing Manly_s Meals on Wheels program for senior citizens.

He also helped secure funding for a new library at Manly and was largely responsible for establishing a nursing home in Manly, the Manly Care Center, now called Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

In 1979, he was voted the Iowa High School Team Physician of the Year by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting, reading, cooking and chess and was in several chess matches in Iowa, in which he won several tournaments.

He was a member of the Manly Lions Club, past president and member of the Manly Jaycees and was a member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 of Manly and was awarded a 50-year membership pin.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Mildred McAllister of Manly; seven children, Murial "Gay" Dietrich of Lake Mills, Jan Judd and her husband, Bruce, of Wilmington, N.C., Marcia Clark and her husband, Robert, of McGregor, Iowa, William McAllister of Manly, Seana Poage of Cedar Falls, Warren McAllister and his friend, Mary, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Steven McAllister and his wife, Angel, of Manly; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean Jacques of Georgetown, Md.; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Molly McAllister; and six brothers and sisters.
