James D. `Jim' Armstrong

ALAMOGORDO, N.M.



James D. ``Jim'' Armstrong, 64, of Alamogordo,  died Thursday

(Aug. 22, 1996) at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque,

following a motorcyle accident, Aug. 15, in Alamogordo.



Jim Armstrong, the son of Cecil R. and Bessie M. (Cerny) Armstrong,

was born June 28, 1932, in Dayton, Iowa.



He attended school in Plymouth, Iowa, graduating with the Class

of 1950. He also attended Mason City, Iowa, Junior College.



A veteran (20-plus years), he retired as a technical sergeant

from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Retired Enlisted

Association, the National Rifle Association, the Fraternal Order

of the Eagles and the First Baptist Church of Alamogordo.



He continued working, off and on, at the White Sands Air Force

Base following his retirement. He was a self-employed mechanic

and also repaired refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.



Survivors include his wife, Francise Armstrong; a daughter,

Deborah Muldavin and her husband, Estaban; and their three children,

Laura Wagoner, and Aaron and Lena Muldavin, all of Albuquerque;

two sons, Michael A. Armstrong and his wife, Sandee, and their

two daughters, Brittany and Alexa, of Tampa, Fla.; and James

Dennis Armstrong of Anaheim, Calif.; and one sister, Joanne ``Joni''

Warner and her husband, Leo, of Mason City, Iowa; one remaining

uncle, Ellsworth Amstrong and his wife, Marguerite, of McPherson,

Kan.; a ``special'' cousin, F. Russell ``Bud'' Cerney of Mason

City, Iowa; and a number of other cousins.



He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil (in 1934); his

mother, Bessie (1992) and his stepfather, Paul F. Faltisek (in

1968).



Funeral services were held in Alamogordo at the First Baptist

Church, with the Pastor W.W. Fountain, a personal friend, officiating.

Sidney Bryant Jensvold

BUFFALO CENTER 



Sidney Bryant Jensvold, 58, of Buffalo Center, died Monday

(Sept. 9, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. William Peake officiating. Burial

will be in Graceland Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter

Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.



Sidney Bryant Jensvold was born May 28, 1938, in Buffalo Center.



Survivors include four brothers, George of Omaha, Neb.; Bill

of Buffalo Center; Mark, Houston, Texas, and Dick of Buffalo

Center.



He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Graveside services for Fern Dresbach, 71, of Deland, Fla.,

formerly of Mason City, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept.

16, 1996, at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with the Rev. Herb Shafer

of  Grace United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating.



She died Saturday (July 13, 1996) at the Volusia Memorial Hospital,

Deland, Fla.

WICHITA, Kan.



Ettabelle Beinke, 92, of Wichita, died Saturday (Sept. 7, 1996)

in Wichita.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Memorial

Park Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.



Ettabelle Beinke was born March 30, 1904, in Sheffield, Iowa,

the daughter of Willis Andrew and Stella Mae (Clark) Storer.



She was a retired school teacher.



Survivors include two sons, Gene of Clinton, Iowa, and James

of Roscommon, Mich.; one daughter, Kay F. Dunn, of Wichita; two

sisters, Winifred Blake and Charlotte Snell, both of Mason City,

Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.



Resthaven Mortuary and Cemetery, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita,

Kan. 67209 is in charge of arrangements.

BRISTOW 



Allie John Frey, 74, of 416 West St., died Sunday (Sept. 8,

1996) at home.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reid's

Funeral Chapel, Greene, with the Rev. Jon Anderson of St. Paul's

Lutheran Church, Hampton, officiating. Interment of the cremains

will be at the North Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene.



There will be no visitation.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider

memorials to the Allie John Frey Memorial Fund, care of the family.



Allie John Frey was born July 25, 1922, in West Point Township,

Butler County.



Survivors include three sons, Larry of Hampton, Rick of Shell

Rock, and Mike of Roseville, Minn.; four grandchildren; one great-

grandchild; and two brothers, Bob Frey of Mason City and Jerry

Frey of Bristow.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one

sister.

Garnet A. Hofer, 98, of 201 N. 12th St., died Monday (Sept.

9, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St.

Patrick's Catholic Church, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka

officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 5:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a 7 p.m. Scriptural

wake service.



The family suggests memorials to the St. Patrick's Catholic

Church or Good Shepherd Care Center.



Garnet was born on a farm south of Miller, the daughter of Simon

S. and Anna (Juhl) Skovgaard.



She received her education from the Miller school.



Garnet married William C. Hofer on Aug. 23, 1922, in Clear Lake.

They moved to her present home in 1931.



She loved to crochet, cook and do embroidering.



Garnet was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear

Lake.



Garnet is survived by her daughter, Julia Ann Young and her

husband Ted, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Nancy Ann Young

Jackson and her husband Bill, of Houston, Texas; and William

Victor Young of Clear Lake; one great-granddaughter, Katharine

Elizabeth Hofer Jackson; and one sister-in-law, Bea Skovgaard

of Orlando, Fla.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother,

Sherwood Skovgaard; and one sister, Mary Elene White.

1996) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home.

will be in Olena Mound Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Winter

Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.



Sena K. Swalve was born on Nov. 3, 1896, near Ackley.



Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette Heesch of Forest City;

one son, Gerald Swalve of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; 22 grandchildren;

three great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and five

stepgreat-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

four sisters and five brothers.

George Harley Law

BELTON, Mo.



Warrant Officer George Harley Law, Retired United States Air

Force, 75, of Belton, Mo., passed away Monday (Sept. 9, 1996)

at the Research Medical Center, Kansas City, Mo.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at South Haven

Baptist Church, Belton, Mo.



The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. E.K. George

& Sons, 611 Chestnut, Belton, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.



In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church

building fund in his memory.



George Harley Law was born Jan. 31, 1921, in Cerro Gordo County,

Iowa.



He was a pilot in the United States Air Force, retiring Oct.

31, 1964, at Forbes Air Force Base, Kan.



He was a Glider pilot survivor of the Normandy Invasion and

three other invasions in Europe.



He drove the official car for Richards-Gebaur Motor Pool from

1965-1978.



He was a member of the South Haven Baptist Church, a member

of the V.F.W. Post #9220 of Belton, D.A.V. and American Legion.



Survivors include his wife, G. Louise Law, of Belton, Mo.; two

daughters, DeNiele C. Berman, of Clinton, Md., and Lyndell K.

Suckow, Gresham, Ore.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;

one brother, Jerry D. Law of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one sister,

Phyllis Whitt of Belton, Mo.



He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald D. Law, who

died in action during World War II.

Burial will be in Center Evangelical Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Tena H. Storby was born Dec 8, 1907, near Lake Mills.



Survivors include two sons, LeRoy Storby of Waseca, Minn., and

Donald Storby of Lake Mills.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-

grandchildren; and one sister, Lila Bissett of Yale, Okla.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

one sister and three brothers.

Beulah Riekena, 77, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Sept. 11,

1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Sharon Worthington officiating.

Burial will be at a later date at Oakland Cemtery.



The body was donated to University Hospitals in Iowa City. There

will be no visitation. Petersen Lund Funeral Home is in charge

of arrangements.



Memorials may be given to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2400

86th St., Suite 29, Des Moines, Iowa 50422.



Beulah Riekena was born May 1, 1919, in Mt. Valley Township,

Winnebago County, Forest City.



Survivors include her husband, Edward G. Riekena of Forest City;

one daughter, Beth Kasinkas of Plymouth, Minn.; three grandchildren;

and one sister, Corma Leach of Forest City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one

sister.

Memorial services for Allie J. ``Bud'' Frey, 74, of 416 West

St., Bristow, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral

Chapel, Greene, with the Rev. Jon Anderson of St. Paul's Lutheran

Church, Hampton, officiating. Interment of cremains will be in

the North Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene. There will be no visitation.



Allie John Frey was born July 25, 1922, in rural West Point

Township, Butler County, a son of Harm and Mollie (Brown) Frey

and died Sunday, (Sept. 8, 1996) at his home in Bristow.



He received his education in rural schools in Butler County

and later attended St. Mary's Academy in Greene and the Greene

High School.



As a young man, he worked for the Albrecht Turkey Farms and

the Greene Limestone, both in Greene.



He was employed for Alan Chevrolet in Allison for 17 years and

was last employed by Shear Elevator in Bristow until his retirement

in 1984.



Bud had been a resident of Bristow for 39 years. He worked on

and repaired lawn mowers for people in the Bristow area for many

years.



As a pastime, he enjoyed racing ponies and in later years enjoyed

fishing and going to garage sales.



He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed doing special things

for them.



Living family members include three sons, Larry and his wife,

Shirley Frey of Hampton; Rick Frey of Shell Rock, and Mike and

his wife, Shelly Frey of Roseville, Minn.; four grandchildren,

Laura Reents of              Hampton; Kyle Frey of Shell Rock;

Kimberly and Kevin Frey of Roseville, Minn.; one great-grandson,

Dylan Reents of Hampton; two brothers, Bob Frey of Mason City

and Jerry Frey of Bristow. He is also survived by several nieces

and nephews.



He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Janeece

Kay Frey in 1954; and a sister, Mavis Stanbrough in 1953.

Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag

and the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating. Burial will be in

the Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from noon until 9 p.m. today and from

9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and one hour prior to services at the

church on Friday.



Arlene Grace Billings was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Randalia.



Survivors include one son, Dennis Billings of Des Moines; three

daughters, Patricia Jensen of Eau Claire, Wis.; Debra McGrew

of Des Moines, and Dianne Zierman of Shakopee, Minn; 10 grandchildren;

five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Teepe and Allen

Teepe, both of Charles City; three sisters, Ellen Billings of

Charles City, Marilyn Horn of Des Moines, and Betty Seward of

LaGrand.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son.

Clifford Arnold Hamm was born April 28, 1930, in Charles City.



Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Nashua; three daughters,

Marcia Alverez of Battle Creek, Mich., Julie Weydert of Charles

City, and Kimberly Hamm of Dunkerton; two sons, Dennis and Alan,

both of Charles City; four stepsons, Floyd Fowlkes of Owatonna,

Minn., Robert Fowlkes of Tulsa, Okla., Ronald Fowlkes of Strawberry

Point, and Jerry Fowlkes of Ft. Worth, Texas; one stepdaughter,

Donna Fowlkes of Ft. Worth, Texas; 30 grandchildren; 18 great-

grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Hamm of Charles City; and one

sister, Dorothy Baldwin of Austin, Minn.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers in infancy,

Ralph E. Wachsmann, 81, of 1326 E. State St., died Tuesday

(Sept. 10, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev.

David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Burial

will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City.



Visitation wil be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral

home and until time of service Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral

Home.



Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in his

memory.



Ralph Wachsmann was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Charles City, the

son of Fred and Edith (Lindameyer) Wachsmann.



He married Amy B. (Goodale) Blunt on Aug. 14, 1943, in Minneapolis,

Minn.



Ralph worked for the government in a war plant in Minneapolis

during the war.



In 1946, Ralph and Amy moved to Mason City.



Ralph was a self-employed contractor with his two brothers in

Mason City.



Survivors include two grandchildren, Douglas Blunt and wife,

Donna, of Charles City, and Peggy Vander Ploeg and her husband,

David, of Paullina; two brothers, Edward Wachsmann and Stanley

Wachsmann, both of Mason City; six great-grandchildren, Kent

Miller, Bob Miller, Jodi Miller, Cody Blunt, Eric Blunt and Ryan

Blunt; and one great-great-grandchild, Mikayla Miller.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Allen Blunt;

wife, Amy; and one sister.

Harm K. Arjes, 73, of Allison, died Wednesday (Sept. 11, 1996)

at Waverly Municipal Hospital, Waverly.

John's Lutheran Church, Clarksville, with the Rev. Norman Omodt

officating. Burial will be in Lynnwood Cemetery, Clarksville.

Harm K. Arjes was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Allison.



Survivors include his wife, Jean Arjes, of Allison; three daughters,

Kay Bogan, of Blue Earth, Janet Arjes and Lisa Arjes, both of

Des Moines; two sons, Craig Arjes, of Hopkinton, and Douglas

Arjes, of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Kermit Arjes, of Allison,

and John Arjes, of Greene; five sisters, Anna Dralle, of Allison,

Rena Arjes, of Allison, Florence Boomgarden, of Bristow, Lavon

Wiebke and Marjorie Harms, both of Allison; and seven grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Kenneth B. Retland, 84, of Thompson, died Thursday (Sept. 12,

1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Perry Fruhling officiating. Burial

will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held one hour before services at the church.

Kenneth B. Retland was born July 2, 1912, in Corning.



Survivors include his wife, Rachel of Thompson; two daughters,

Francile Honken of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and Ruby Curtsinger,

of McKinney, Texas; two sons, Bernie Retland of Waco, Texas,

and Tim Retland of Thompson; 12 grandchildren; three great-

grandchildren;

and three stepgrandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Rachel L. Austin, 14, of 1513 10th St. S.W., died Thursday (Sept.

12, 1996) at University Hospitals, Iowa City, due to complications

of heart surgery.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John

``Jack'' Gannett officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph

Cemetery.



Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services at

the church on Monday.



Memorials may be made to the Rachel L. Austin Memorial Fund.



Rachel L. Austin was born Dec. 16, 1981, in Mason City, daughter

of David and Susan (Kraft) Austin. Rachel was a freshman at Mason

City High School.



She loved animals and enjoyed reading and playing games.



She did many activities with her family especially boating,

tubing, and riding motorcycle with her dad.



She spent much of her time with her special friends, Brooke

Harriman and Kendra Carpenter.



Rachel brought much pleasure and joy to her family and will

be missed by all who knew her.



She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.



Survivors include her parents, David and Sue Austin of Mason

City; one brother, Bob Austin of Mason City; her maternal grandmother,

Audrey Mae Adams, 64, of 128 Ninth St. N.W., died Thursday

(Sept. 12, 1996) at her home.



A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Family

Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. John R. Kremer

officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene.



Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Scriptural wake service at

7 p.m.



Audrey Mae Adams was born May 11, 1932, at Charles City, the

daughter of Ralph and Lillian (Smith) Skillen. She attended schools

in Greene.



She married Jack Adams on June 12, 1954, at Preston, Minn.



In 1993, she retired from Mercy Hospital after 17 years of service.



She enjoyed shopping, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.



She also enjoyed spending time with her cats and sitting on

the front porch watching life and all it had to offer.



Her hobbies included feeding and watching the birds and squirrels

out in her yard.



Survivors include her husband, Jack Adams, Mason City; four

sons, Craig Adams, Minneapolis, Minn.; Brad Adams and his wife,

Lori, Northwood; Clayton Adams and his wife, Christy, Mason City;

and John Adams and his wife, Kathy, Rockford; three daughters,

Valerie Thomas and her husband, Michael, Northwood; Lilyann Adams

and Laurie Adams, both of Mason City; five sisters, Harriet Skillen

and Paulette Skillen, both of Charles City; Kathleen Sinram;

Joanne Sinram and her husband, Verne, Oelwein; and Sandy Dugan

and her husband, Danny, Muscatine; eight grandchildren, Alisa

and Lindsey Rathbone, Bobbie, Matt and Whitney Adams, all of

Northwood; Jessica, Nicholas and Jared Adams, of all Mason City;

six nephews and one niece.



She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Patrick Joseph

Adams; one daughter, Kathleen Ann Adams; and one grandson, Nathan.

(Sept. 12, 1996) at her home in Oelwein after a lengthy illness.

Margaret E. Duffy was born Oct. 24, 1921, in Fairbank, a daughter

of Frank W. and Margaret (Nuebel) Miller.



She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1938

and from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, Mich.,

in 1942.



She was united in marriage to Leonard Duffy on Sept. 2, 1943,

at Immaculate Conception Church in Fairbank.



She was a registered nurse, worked at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein

and also had her Realtor's license and was a homemaker.



She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred

Heart Rosary Society and a member of both the State of Iowa Nursing

and the State of Michigan Nursing organizations.



Survivors include her husband, Leonard, of Oelwein; daughter,

Mrs. Douglas (Mary) Halsted of Rudd; son, John L. Duffy and his

wife, Paula A., of Mason City; daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Julie)

O'Hara of Waterloo; a very special niece, Mrs. Dennis (Becky)

Hamann of Oelwein; 10 grandchildren; two grand nieces and a grand

nephew of Becky's; four great-grandchildren; a great grand niece

and a great grand nephew; a sister, Sister Mary Francelyn of

Detroit, Mich.; and two brothers, Paul Miller of Dubuque and

Joe Miller of Fairbank.



She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Schaefer; a brother,

Frank Miller Jr., and her parents.

Burton G. ``Peanuts'' Brierly, 62, of 204 Second St. S.W.,

died Friday (Sept. 13, 1996) at the Nora Springs Care Center.



The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Sheckler

Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, is in charge of arrangements.



A graveside inurnment service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday

at Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Pippert of Nora Springs

United Methodist Church officiating. Military honors will be

conducted at the cemetery by the Nora Springs American Legion

Post #449.



Burton G. Brierly was born March 15, 1934, at Nora Springs,

the son of Garrett and Adda (Tibbits) Brierly.



Mr. Brierly grew up in Nora Springs and served in the 82nd Airborne

from 1954 to 1956.



He worked many years as a self-employed carpenter in the Nora

Springs area.



He enjoyed gardening and loved the company of friends.



He especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.



He was a member of the American Legion Post #449.



Survivors include two sons, Bryan Brierly and his wife, Kathy,

Nora Springs; and Tony Brierly and his wife, Robin, Grafton;

one daughter, Kristi Brierly, student at UNI, Cedar Falls; three

brothers, Gale Brierly, Delbert Brierly and Gordon Brierly, all

of Nora Springs; one sister, Mary Lou Stoltenberg, Tripoli; four

grandchildren, Adam and Jill Brierly, both of Nora Springs, and

Eden and Garrett Brierly, both of Grafton; and many nieces, nephews

and other family members.



He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Thresa

Brierly; two sisters, Virgnia Rethamel and Etna Brierly; and

two brothers, Howard Brierly and Kenneth Brierly.

Juanita J. Riser, 71, of 331 - 28th Street S.W., died Friday

(September 13, 1996) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson with the Rev. Joel Dahlen

officiating.  Burial will be in the Grundy Center Cemetery, Grundy

Funeral Home 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and one hour prior to

the funeral at the church on Tuesday.

Juanita J. Riser was born Oct. 11, 1924, the daughter of Hans

Henry and Goldie (Squibb) Smith in Scranton.  Juanita graduated

from Mason City High School in 1943.  She then attended college

in Ohio before returning back to Mason City where she worked

for the Western Union Telegraph Office and Coca Cola Bottlers.

Juanita also worked in the meat department at HyVee West for

15 years, retiring in 1984.  Juanita was married to Earldon Kenneth

Riser in 1944 in Mason City.  Juanita enjoyed bowling, golfing,

watching football and the Hawkeyes, traveling and her friends.



Juanita was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, V.F.W.

and the Moose Lodge.



Survivors include two sons, Tom Riser and his wife Liz of Mason

City, and Keith Riser of Mason City; four grandchildren, Jeff

Riser and special friend Cindy Richardson of Mason City, Angie

Riser of Mason city, Ty Riser and special friend Penny Gordon

of Mason City, Ronnie Riser Jr. of Mason City; five great grandchildren,

Johnny, Austin, Ashley, Abbie and Dustina; three sisters, Doris

Leewright of Mason City, Lila Mathews of Mason City, and Sharon

George L. Scholl, the oldest Rockwell resident, age 101, died

Thursday (September, 12, 1996) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Parish Center where

a parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m.  Interment will

be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery where Military Rites

will be conducted by the Gallagher Post of the American Legion.

Fullerton Funeral Home of Rockwell is in charge of arrangements.



George was born on Dec. 25, 1984 the son of Frank and Catherine

(Funk) Scholl in Rockwell.  He graduated from country school

and then served his country in the Army during World War I.

He served from 1918 to 1919 in France.  Following his honorary

discharge he attended Iowa State College Mechanics School in

1921.  He than worked as a mechanic in Rockwell where he was

a life time resident.  George was united in marriage to his wife

Barbara Kobliska on June 23, 1925 in Alta Vista.  He was a member

of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gallagher Post #208 of the American

Legion, Knights of Columbus Council #1006 the Rockwell Senior

Citizens and the World War I Veterans.  He also spent many hours

playing Pinochle, 500 and Euchre as well as baking pies and cookies.



George is survived by three daughters, Barbara and her husband

Ray Thuel of Johnstown, Pa., Doris and her husband Dale Patterson

of Lakota, and Leona and her husband John Bonner of Swaledale;

one son, Harold and his wife Loretta Scholl of Covington, Ky.;

one sister, Mary Hogan of Rockwell; 12 grandchildren and 15 great

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his wife in 1970, two sisters; Christine

Rohner, Lucy Smith and seven brothers, Peter, Albert, Nick, Art,

Bill, Roy, and Francis.

area, died Thursday (September 12, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy

Health Center in Mason City following a sudden illness.

Funeral Home, Waverly, with the Rev. Dan Herndon officiating.

Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.



Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, and for one

hour before services on Monday all at the funeral home.



Memorials should be directed to the family in memory of Marjorie

for a fund to be established at a later date.



Marjorie Squires was born on July 24, 1927, in Waverly.

Thelma Lucille Funnell was born April 22, 1914 in rural Chapin,

Franklin County, a daughter of Richard B. and Myrtle A. (Tucker)

Funnell and passed away Friday, (September 13, 1996) at the Allison

Care Center in Allison of acute Leukemia.



She grew up on farms in South Dakota and near Aredale where

she attended rural schools and later graduated from the Hansell

High School in 1932.  She was united in marriage to Verle K.

Barth on June 8, 1934 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Hampton by

Rev. Paul Meyer.  Mr. and Mrs. Barth made their home in Greene,

and to this union were born four children.



Thelma was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church

in Greene where she was baptized and confirmed on April 7, 1935.

She taught Sunday School for nearly 40 years and was an active

member of the Glory Circle of WELCA, former member of the Ladies

Aid Society and Women's Missionary Society.  Her greatest love

was for her Lord, her family, and many friends.



She found enjoyment in quilting, sewing, canning from her husband's

garden, reading, and corresponding with relatives and friends.

Verle and Thelma enjoyed traveling through out the continental

United States, England, and Scotland.  They were members of the

North Iowa Wedding Club.



Her involvement in community activities included the Greene

Woman's Club, Greene Historical Society, and Butler County Association

for Retarded Citizens.  She supported all the school music, drama

and sporting events, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.



She will be missed, but has given her family and friends many

happy memories.



Living family members include two daughters and their spouses,

Verlene K. and Floyd Senne of Allison, Diane L. and Jim Osier

of Azusa, Calif; two sons, Ronald K. and Charlene Barth of Marshaltown,

and John D. and Carol Barth of Greene; ten grandchildren, Steve

Barth, Debra Maddox, Ranae Myers, Greg Senne, Amy Fehlberg, Julie

Ticker, Randy Osier, Jody Osier, James Barth and Dan J. Barth;

12 great grandchildren; two sisters, Leone Deam of Hampton and

Maxine Salsbury of Cedar Falls; two brothers, Orville Funnell

of Demming, Minn. and Charles Funnell of Hansell; a sister in

law, Marion Funnell of Grundy Center and a step sister in law,

Frances Schafer of Greene.



She was preceded in death by her husband on April 24, 1989;

her parents; a sister, Alice in infancy; and a brother, Robert

Funnell.

Mr. Fay Franklin Strahorn

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.



Mr. Fay Franklin Strahorn, 79, died Friday (September 13, 1996).

He was a native of Rockwell and had been a Peninsula resident

for 37 years.

at Lawrence B. Wood funeral home,  4304 Victoria Blvd., Hampton,

Va.



The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at First

Mr. Strahorn was self employed in the heating/cooling business

and had retired in 1987.  He was a member of First United Methodist

Church and Wesley Bible Class.  He was also a member of the Hampton

Kiwana's Club and Monitor Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Strahorn served

in the Navy during World War II.



He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Susan Jean Strahorn;

one daughter, Susan Hutto Godley and preceded in death by two

sons, Steve Robert Strahorn and Mark Avery Strahorn.  He is also

survived by two daughters-in-law, Pamela Strahorn Joyner and

Pamela Mauld Strahorn; a son-in-law, Kenneth Wayne Godley; two

brother-in-laws, E. Barton Gear and Melton Gear, and six

grandchildren.

Lenora May (Sibert) Lathrop the daughter of Elmer and Effle

(Dodge) Sibert was born September 17, 1906, at Williams.



After graduation from high school Lenora became a school teacher

in the rural schools in Wright County.



She was united in marriage to Hartie M. Lathrop on Nov. 30,

1931 in Belmond.  They lived in Belmond, where Hartie worked

as an auto mechanic.



Lenora continued to live in her home after Hartie died in March

of 1982.  You could always witness her love for flowers by the

many gardens of flowers around her house.



Lenora has been a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center

for the past 2 1/2 years and died there on Friday, September

13, 1996.



She is survived by a son, Gaylen Lathrop and his wife, JoAnn

of Bellingham, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Kay Lathrop of Boulder,

Colo.; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a sister,

Blanche Jergensen of Clarion; and a brother, Alva Sibert and

his wife, Cecila of Des Moines.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Hartie; sons, Glenn

and Roger; and brother, Harvey.
