WESTIN



Gertie Westin, 100, Kanawha, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 1996) at

the Kanawha Community Home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial

will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Kanawha.



Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ewing

Dugger Funeral Home, Kanawha, and one hour prior to services

at the church.



Gertie Westin was born Jan. 30, 1896, in Holland.



Survivors include two sons, Carl Westin of Fort Dodge, and Henry

Delger of Clarion; seven grandchildren; one sister, Ann Terhart

of Britt; and one brother, Jake Delger of Albert Lea, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister

and three brothers.

Minnie E. Blau, 88, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec. 24, 1996)

at the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel

Reformed Church, Belmond, with the Rev. William Kroon officiating.

Burial will be in the Immanuel Reformed Cemetery, Belmond.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dugger

Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services at

the church.



Minnie E. Blau was born Dec. 22, 1908, in Belmond.



There are no survivors.



She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers.

I. Lucille Larson, 87, of Scarville, died Tuesday (Dec. 24,

1996) at the Lake Mills Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Immanuel

Lutheran Church, Scarville, with the Rev. Thomas Hughes officiating.

Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services at the

church.



I. Lucille Larson was born Aug. 1, 1909 in Scarville.



Survivors include two sisters, Thea Larson of Scarville, and

Ingeborg Bye of Albert Lea, Minn.; and one brother, Albert Larson,

Scarville.



She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and

one infant brother.

Madonna C. Venz

CHARLES CITY 



Madonna C. Venz, 81, formerly of 700 Wisconsin St. and Rural

Route #4, Charles City, died Monday (Dec. 23, 1996) at the Eleventh

Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, following a brief

illness.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah

Lutheran Church, 705 Third Ave., Charles City, with the Rev.

Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.



Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, and one hour

prior to services at the church.



Mrs. Venz, the former Madonna Christina Guthart, was born Sept.

21, 1915, in Charles City, the daughter of Edward and Nettie

(Larrabee) Guthart.



She graduated from Charles City High School in 1934.



Following high school, she received her normal training to become

a school teacher. She taught at the Venz Country School.



The couple made their home for many years on a farm north of

Charles City. Mr. Venz died Oct. 25, 1985, in Mason City. Mrs.

Venz moved into Charles City following his death.



She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Friendly Birthday

Club and the Welcome Club.



Living family members include a son and his wife, Ron and Marilyn

Venz of Charles City; a daughter and her husband, Carolyn and

Rich Hansen of Nashua; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.



In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death

by two brothers, Harland and Garland Venz; and an infant sister,

Edna Guthart.



Those considering an expression of sympathy may choose to direct

memorials to Messiah Lutheran Church or Heart to Home Hospice.

Beverly Ann Korleski

KLEMME 



Beverly Ann (Trampel) Korleski, 46, of Klemme, died suddenly

on Monday (Dec. 23, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center,

Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Immanuel

Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme, with the Rev. Georgia

White-Kisslring, officating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery,

Klemme.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Tenold

Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Beverly Ann Korleski, daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Hacs) Trampel,

was born Aug. 2, 1950, at Belmond.



She graduated from Klemme High School with the class of 1968.



She was united in marriage to Robert Korleski on Oct. 20, 1979,

and in 1989, they purchased a plumbing, heating and electrical

business in Klemme.



In the spring of 1990, they moved to an acreage where they devoted

much time to their children's 4-H projects.



After Bob's death in 1992, Beverly continued to live on the

acreage, where she and the children enjoyed their horses, taking

them on trail rides and to many rodeos.



Beverly worked for the Department of Human Services in Hancock

County for more than 20 years.



Surviving are her children, Tammy Callahan of Minneapolis, Minn.;

sons, Dustin and Jason Korleski, both at home; grandson, Treyton;

a special friend, Rex Callaway; her parents, Clarence and Ruth

Trampel of Klemme; mother-in-law, Pat Korleski of Lake City;

sisters, Joanne Vander Wolde and her husband, Gerry of Klemme;

and Dixie Nelson and her husband, Greg of Klemme; brothers, Richard

Trampel and his wife, Diane of Klemme; and Terry Trampel and

special friend, Barb of Plainfield; also many nieces, nephews

and in-laws.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and both maternal

and paternal grandparents.

Vaughn P. Staebler

MASON CITY



Vaughn P. Staebler, 89, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday

(Dec. 24, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St.

James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St, S,E,; with the Rev. David

Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in

Sheffield.



Memorials may be given to the Vaughn P. Staebler Memorial Fund.



There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111

N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.



Vaughn was born March 2, 1907, at Charles City, son of George

and Geneva (Porter) Staebler.



He attended Cedar Township Dist. #5 country school in the Charles

City area.



Vaughn was married to Leona Schwab on Sept. 5, 1928, in Mason

City.



He farmed north of Clear Lake and Mason City and near Plymouth.



He enjoyed watching baseball games on television and gardening.



He worked at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City as an orderly for

more than 12 years.



He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.



Survivors include one son, Richard Staebler and his wife, Myrna,

Charles City; granddaughters, LaVon Geiken and her husband, Myron,

Ackley, and Rhonda Jackson, Mason City; grandsons, David Staebler,

Tomball, Texas, Gary Staebler, Charles City, Steven Spurgeon

and his wife, Jenny, Mason City, and Russell Spurgeon, Cedar

Falls; and several great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jess

Staebler, Adams, Minn., and Kenneth Staebler and his wife, Francis,

Temple City, Calif.



He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona in 1994;

daughter, Donna Spurgeon; and three brothers, Elwin, Everett

and Leslie.

Leo Wallace

RICEVILLE



Leo Wallace, 79, of Riceville, died Monday (Dec. 23, 1996)

at the Riceville Community Rest Home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Lindstrom

Funeral Home, Riceville, with the Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom

Funeral Home.



Leo was born May 18, 1917, at Rudd.



Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Riceville; three sons,

Karman of Richardson, Texas, Curtis of Riceville, and Gerald

of Estherville; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren;

and two brothers, Milo of Jacksonville, Ark., and Melbourne of

Minneapolis, Minn.; and one sister, Adeline Lubbert of Riceville.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Carl Lawrence Willford

NORA SPRINGS



Carl Lawrence Willford, 69, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Dec.

24, 1996) at 26 Fifth St. N.W., Nora Springs.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Sheckler

Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, with the  Rev. Richard Pippert

of United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, officiating. Interment

will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.



Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.



The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.



Carl was born Dec. 27, 1926, in Plymouth, the son of Calvin

and Ethel (Derr) Willford.



He attended school in Plymouth through his junior year and graduated

from Frederick High School, Frederick, S.D., in 1944.



Carl enlisted in the United States Navy Dec. 21, 1944, and was

stationed in Guatonomau Naval Base in Cuba, where he served on

the maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Macon. He was dischaged on Oct.

25, 1946.



After the service, he went to school to become a radio engineer

and an announcer in southern Minnesota and Defiance, Ohio.



He was never afraid to try new and interesting ventures. Among

them were, recruiting high school seniors to become airline hostesses;

being a professional salesman with time-shares in real estate;

building and owning trout ranches in Paw Paw and Hudson, Mich.;

and developing Cumberland Mountain retreat in Crossville, Tenn.,

in the 1960's. Recently he was a co-owner of Pots-R-Us (Indian

pottery and artifacts) with his nephew, Vernon Pedelty.



He is survived by three sisters, Doris Tack and her husband,

Nile, Plymouth; Reva Pedelty, Nora Springs, and Phyllis Peterson

and her husband, Harold, Mandan, N.D.; eight nieces and nephews;

and 17 great-nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Charlie

Snell; brother-in-law, Harold Pedelty, and an infant sister,

Thelma.

Marjorie R. Fletcher

CLEAR LAKE



Mrs. Marjorie R. (Wubben) Fletcher, 85, of 522 10th Ave N.,

Clear Lake, formerly of 1019 N. Taylor Ave., Mason City, died

Tuesday (Dec. 24, 1996) at her son's home in Clear Lake.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the

Rev. Herbert Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church of Mason

City, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. today at the Ward Van-Slyke

Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake.



The family suggests memorials to the Marjorie R. Fletcher memorial

fund.



Marjorie was born May 6, 1911, in LeRoy, Minn., the daughter

of Hiram and Cecil Campbell.



She married Simon Andrew Wubben and they lived in the Mason

City area. After his death in 1956, she married Bob Fletcher

in 1964 and he preceded her in death.



Marjorie moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, in July of 1995 to live

with her son.



She was an avid country western music fan, a member of George

Jones fan club, avid Cub and Hawkeye fan and was a member of

the First Baptist Church, Mason City.



Majorie is survived by two sons, Larry Wubben and his wife,

Ramona, Hudson, Wis., and Jerry Wubben and his wife, Elenor,

Clear Lake, Iowa; her twin sister, Margarite Beisel, Mason City;

one sister-in-law, Alma Campbell, Mason City; and several nieces

and nephews; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one

daughter, Phyllis L. Salyers; two infant sons, Dickie and Jackie

Wubben; and one son, Si Jr. Wubben.

Maryiea C. Curtis

MASON CITY 



Maryiea C. Curtis, 81, of the Manly Care Center, died Monday

(Dec. 23, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev.

Herbert Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. today until time of services.



Maryiea was born on Jan. 13, 1915, the daughter of Alfred and

Grace (Abbas) Johnson in Buffalo Center.



Maryiea Johnson was united in marriage to James C. Curtis on

June 8, 1933, in Bancroft, Iowa. In 1948, the couple moved to

the Mason City area.



She enjoyed planting a garden in the spring and working with

it all summer long. During the evenings, she liked to read various

kinds of books.



She was a member of the Ladies Kitchen.



Maryiea is survived by six children, James and his wife Sue

of Plymouth, Ray and his wife Joice of Plymouth, Robert of Mason

City, Joseph of Mount Pleasant, Timothy of Kansas City, Kan.,

and Arthur of Columbia, Mo.; four sisters, Dorothy Johnson, Alvera

Phoenix, Josophine Shelby, and Kathleen Savonich; two brothers,

Marvin Johnson and Kenneth Johnson; and 10 grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James, one

sister and two brothers.

MASON CITY



Mary Budke, 81, of 651 Sixth St. S.E., died Monday (Dec. 23,

1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family

Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Beckman

officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service beginning

at 7 p.m.



Memorials in her memory may be made to Hospice of North Iowa,

and Holy Family Catholic Church.



Mary Budke was born June 4, 1915, at Mason City, the daughter

of David and Anna (Hearity) Ryan.



 She attended St. Joseph's School and Hamilton Business College,

in Mason City.



She worked at Buttrey's, a downtown women's clothing store in

Mason City, for many years.



She married George W. Budke on Nov. 24, 1936, in Mason City.

He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1974.



She then married Edward Jones on July 9, 1977. He preceded her

in death on Feb. 26, 1986.



She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Lady Elks

and the V.F.W.



Survivors include one son, Jack Budke, of Mason City; one daughter,

Jill Haus and her husband, Ray, Fond du Lac, Wis.; five grandchildren

Todd Budke and his wife, Terri, Palmdale, Calif., Mickey Budke,

Visalia, Calif., Ryan, Darre and Robyn Haus, Fond du Lac, Wis.;

one great-granddaughter, Hannah Budke, Palmdale, Calif.; one

sister, Erin Hubbard, Blaine, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Agnes

Riley, Elma, and Sr. Mary Georgine, Cedar Rapids; a special friend,

Erv Hoveland, Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands

and an infant son at birth.



The family extended a heartfelt ``thank you'' to the staff members

at Good Shepherd Health Care Center and Muse Norris Hospice for

their kindness and care during Mom's last months.

Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will

be in the North Prairie Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.

Tilford O. Hockenson was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Winnebago County.



Survivors include two sisters, Adeline Drogsvold, Austin, Minn.,

and Pearl Wegener, Mason City; and one brother, Harry Hockenson,

Plymouth.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three

sisters.

Mary was born Nov. 6, 1901, at New Hartford, Iowa.



Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Wilson, Chula Vista, Calif.,

and Robert Wilson, Mason City; three grandchildren; five great-grand-

children; one sister, Florence Multhauf, Stewartville, Minn.; and

one brother, Eugene Schumacher, Charles City.



She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one

brother and one sister.

Marjorie M. Mennig was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Clarion.



Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Ellis of Clarion,

Anita Hilpipre of Woolstock and Laurie Leonard of St. Peters,

Mo.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister,

Mary Kerch, Clarion; and four brothers, Robert Armstrong, Eagle

Grove, Leon Armstrong, Texarkana, Texas, Chester Armstrong, Ogden,

and Ralph Armstrong, Mount Prospect, Ill.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother

and one sister.

Judy Schumacher, 56, of Hot Springs, Ark., died Wednesday (Dec.

25, 1996) at Hot Springs.



Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred

Heart Catholic Church, Waseca, with the Rev. John Kunz officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waseca.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kinder-Dennis

Home for Funerals, 108 N.W. Second Ave., Waseca, with a 7:30

p.m. parish prayer service, and one hour before services at the

church on Sunday.



Judy Schumacher was born April 11, 1940, in Jordan, Minn., the

daughter of Lawrence and Ann (Spors) Voight.



She attended school in Clara City, Minn., and graduated from

Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 1958.



She was united in marriage to James H. Schumacher on July 26,

1958, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waseca.



She worked as a homemaker and was an avid golfer.



She was a member of the Hot Springs Country Club and St. Mary's

Catholic Church, Hot Springs.



She is survived by her husband, James Schumacher of Hot Springs;

three sons, Larry Schumacher and his wife, Casey, of Mason City,

Iowa, Thomas Schumacher of Monett, Mo., and Danny Schumacher

and his wife, Jane, of Springfield, Mo.; her mother-in-law, Lola

Schumacher of Waseca; eight grandchildren; one sister, Barbara

Minkel and her husband, Gilbert, of Sultan, Wash.; sisters-in-law,

Audrey Guion and her husband, Joe, of Johnson City, Tenn., and

Nancy Burnham and her husband, Craig, of DePere, Wis.; and brothers-in-law,

Joe Schumacher and his wife, Sherri, of Waseca,  and Charles

Schumacher of Waseca.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one son and four daughters.

Alfred H. Richter

DES MOINES



Alfred H. Richter, 68, of 2416 Holcomb Ave., Des Moines, died

Thursday (Dec. 26, 1996) at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at McLaren's

Funeral Chapel, 801 19th St., West Des Moines. Burial will be

in Resthaven Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at McLaren's

Funeral Chapel.



Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association.



Alfred H. Richter was born on March 22, 1928, at Muscatine,

Iowa. He was in the United States Air Force.



He worked for U.S. West Communications in Mason City where he

met Phyllis Norris. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Norris

on Jan. 12, 1963, in Mason City.



He was transfered down to U.S. West Communications in Des Moines.

He was very inventive and was responsible for a lot of improvements

in U.S. West Communications. He retired in 1990.



He loved to work in their garden and to collect miniature tiny

tractors and old cars.



He was a member of Telephone Pioneers, the Des Moines Camera

Club, and Panoramic Camera Club.



He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Richter of Des Moines; and

his mother-in-law, Opal V. Norris of Des Moines, also a former

Mason City resident.

VENTURA 



Francis J. ``Cy'' Ungs, 74, of Ventura, died Thursday (Dec.

26, 1996) at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's

Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka

officiating.



Following the memorial service, the family asks that you please

Francis was born on a farm near North Washington, Iowa, Sept.

10, 1922, the son of Michael and Elizabeth (Nee Raush) Ungs.



He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at Immaculate

Conception Church in North Washington. He attended grade school

and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in North

Washington.



Francis enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for the duration

of World War II.



He also attended Northwestern University, earning a B.A. Degree

in business administration.



While residing and working in Des Moines, Iowa, he married Carrol

Bartz.



Prior to retirement in 1980, Francis was the general manager

of Forest City Industries for 21 years.



Francis enjoyed reading, playing cards, fishing and golfing,

and was an avid carver of water fowl.



Francis is survived by his wife, Carrol, of Ventura; a daughter,

Cheri Grauer and her husband, Ted, of Van Meter, Iowa; a son,

Curtis Ungs and his wife, Laurie, of West Des Moines; a granddaughter,

Katelyn Ungs; grandsons, Ben Grauer and Casey Ungs; three sisters,

Mildred Nosbisch and her husband, Vic, Edna Long and Luella Bentz,

all of New Hampton; and a brother, Clarence Ungs and his wife,

Mary, of New Hampton.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother,

Clement Ungs; two brothers, Edward and Reynold Ungs; and one

sister, Elaine Gates.

at the Belmond Community Hospital, of leukemia.

Corene was born on Jan. 21, 1917, at Fulda, Minn., the daughter

of Adolph J. and Anna (Sullivan) Dorr. The family returned to

farm near Belmond the same year.



Corene graduated from Belmond High School in 1935 and attended

Drake University.



She worked for the United States Army in Des Moines as a civilian

employee.



She later worked for the State of Iowa, Department of Vital

Statistics and later transferred to the United States Treasury

(IRS) at Des Moines and Kansas City.



Corene was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the

Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was

a former member of the Mended Hearts, Chapter No. 222 in Mason

City.



Corene is survived by two sisters, Irene Chapman of Eagle Grove

and Helen Dorr of Belmond; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arthur Dorr

of Terre Haute, Ind.; nieces and nephews and their children,

Kathy McMurray of Des Moines, Joan Montfort of Orlando, Fla.,

Sharon Abele of Olympia, Wash., James and Judy Chapman of Algona,

Arthur and Mary Chapman of Eagle Grove, Jerry and Jan Chapman

of Rogers, Minn., and Richard and Mary Chapman of Billings, Mont.

She is also survived by many good, supportive friends, relatives

and neighbors.



She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers,

Earl, Otto, Arthur and Charles.

Billy Huerta was born May 5, 1915, in Monterray, Mexico.



He was a long-standing resident of Mason City, Iowa, where he

its closing. He then transferred to Armour in Martin City, Mo.,

and worked until his retirement.



He enjoyed horses, antiques, flea markets and dancing.



He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Huerta; three sons, Billy

Huerta Jr. and his wife, Violet, Rudy Huerta, and Frank Huerta

and his wife, Payo, all of Stockton, Calif.; two daughters, Ana

Maria Montano and her husband, Manuel, of Buena, Wash., and Eva

Miller and her husband, Jack, of Manly, Iowa; three brothers,

Lupe Huerta and Pete Huerta, both of McAllen, Texas, and Veto

Gertrude I. (Lundberg) Swanson was born on Nov. 10, 1900, at

Wakefield, Neb., the daughter of Oscar and Matilda (Hanson) Lundberg.

She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Swedish Lutheran Church

in Wakefield.  She attended elementary school at Wakefield, and

graduated from Randolph, Neb. High School.  She attended Wayne

State Teachers College, Wayne, Neb., and then taught school three

years in rural Nebraska.  On March 18, 1922, Gertrude married

Alfred Swanson at Hartington, Neb.  He preceded her in death

on May 20, 1969.  After their marriage together they farmed near

Hartington, Neb. and Bloomfield, Neb. from 1922 until 1939, when

they moved to Northwood.  They first farmed west of Northwood

for two years and then purchased their farm east of Northwood.

They were actively engaged in farming until Alfred's death on

May 20, 1969.  Gertrude moved to Northwood in 1981 but was active

in managing her farm until her death.



Gertrude was a member of the United Methodist Church and of

the Rachel Circle of the UMW and at one time was the UMW District

Literature and Publications Officer.  She was active in the World

War I Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and

the North Star Senior Citizens.  Over the years she belonged

to extension clubs, bridge clubs, Red Cross, United Service Women,

Sigma Beta Delphian Federated Study Club, and Green Thumb Garden

Club.



She enjoyed reading, crafts, cards, Scrabble, crosswords and

traveling.



She is survived by one son, Dale Swanson and his wife, Louise,

of Mason City; one daughter, Maxine Darnall and her husband,

Lloyd, of Brookings, S.D.; one sister, Hildur Joyce of Boulder,

Colo.; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great

-grandchild; as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives

and friends.



Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents,

one brother and one sister.

Lenora Agnes Meints, the daughter of John and Mary (Kolling)

Larson, was born Dec. 22, 1907 in Blairsburg.  She graduated

from Clear Lake High School and then went on to graduate from

Hamilton University of Commerce in Mason City.  Lenora was employed

by several Klemme businesses as a bookkeeper.



On Feb. 20, 1942, she married Herman Meints at the Klemme parsonage.

They farmed in the Klemme area and have had their present farm

for over 50 years.



She is survived by her sons, Harlan Meints and his wife, Sheryl,

of Ute, and Terry Meints of Klemme and his fiance, Dixie Revland,

of Goodell; daughter-in-law, Carol Meints of St. Charles; a brother,

Jim Larson of Belmond; a sister, Sylvia Early of Rockwell; and

nine grandchildren, Juleen Meints, Michael Meints, Steve Meints,

Angela Meints, Jamie Meints, Nicky Meints, Kristy Meints, Craig

Meints and Tracy (Meints) Marshall and her husband, Frank.

Edna Lindloff was born May 12, 1915 in Kesley, the daughter

of Dick and Cora (Molhoek) Halma.  She attended rural country

school through eighth grade.  Following school she stayed at

home and helped out on the family farm.  She was united in marriage

to Christian Lindloff on Nov. 27, 1938 in the Evangelical Church

of Sheffield.  They made their home farming in the North Iowa

area until moving into Sheffield on Sept. 17, 1970.  She cleaned

homes for several families for many years before retiring.



Edna enjoyed gardening, embroidery, hand quilting, baking, playing

cards and games, and visiting with her family and friends.



She is survived by her husband, Christian Lindloff of Sheffield;

two daughters, Shirley Welch and her husband, Larry, of Marble

Rock, and Marcia Schwartz and her husband, Donald, of Mason City;

three sons, Richard and his wife, Donna, of Clarksville, Raymond

and his wife, Linda, of Mason City, and Edwin and his wife, Thelma,

of Mason City; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two

Mickelson was born on Jan. 5, 1912 in Albert Lea, Minn.  She

attended school in Albert Lea and graduated from Mason City High

School on May 11, 1933.  She married Charles D. Hilton at Mason

City.  She worked at various part-time jobs, but was mainly a

housewife.



She lived in Albert Lea, Mason City, Eugene, Ore., Tyler, Texas,

Roland, Orange, Calif., Santa Ana, Calif., Mira Loma, Calif.,

and Webster City for the last four years.



She was a member of Garden Grove Community Church of Garden

Grove, Calif., and had been a member of the First Baptist Church

of Tyler, Texas and Mason City.



She is survived by son Dave Hilton and daughter-in-law, Rosemary,

of Webster City; daughter, Debbie Moore and son-in-law, Jim,

of Pleasanton, Calif.; brother, Charles Mickelson of Medford,

Ore.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her husband; brother, Ralph Mickelson;

sisters, Doris Wiltgen and Gail Mickelson; and sons, Douglas

Teresa Monica Ervay was born on Jan. 21, 1923 in Staten Island,

N.Y., the daughter of Mathew J. and Catherine (Walsh) Smith.

She was raised and attended school in Staten Island, and then

moved to Nora Springs where she made her home until moving to

Red Oak in 1989.  She was united in marriage to Harold Ervay

in 1967 in Albert Lea, Minn.  He preceded her in death in 1988.



Monica is survived by three daughters, Patricia O'Donnell and

her husband, Jimmy, of Carmel, N.Y., Jerry Stocksleger of Red

Oak, and Carolyn Hayungs and her husband, Tony, of Nevada; two

sons, Raymond Smith and his wife, Dolly, of Aklan, Philippines,

Raymond Simpson, 76, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 1996) at the Good

Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Champion

Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Gonnerman officiating.  Burial

will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites by American

Legion Post 278 and V.F.W. Post 7920.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral

Raymond Simpson was born Aug. 26, 1920 in Osage.



Survivors include one son, Robert Simpson of Austin, Texas;

three daughters, Sharon Sayles, Virginia Glassel and Beverly

DeBlauwe, all of St. Ansgar; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren;

step-mother, Mabel Simpson of Waconia, Minn.; and five half-brothers,

Dean Simpson of Excelsior, Minn., Donald Simpson of Le Sueur,

Minn., and David Simpson of Lawrenceburg, Ind.

the Rev. Karen Rask Behling officiating. Burial will be Sunnyside

Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted by the Charles

City Ceremonial Unit.



Visitation will be held from noon until 9 p.m. Thursday at the

Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, and one

hour before services at the church on Friday.



Joseph Ervin Thoe was born April 28, 1923, in Mower County,

Minn.



Survivors include his wife, Clarinda of Charles City; one son,

David Thoe of Golden, Colo.; two daughters, Connie Marlow of

Charles City, and Debra Thoe of Bricelyn, Minn.; three brothers,

Arthur Thoe of Charles City, Norman Thoe and Donald Thoe, both

of Lake City, Minn.; three sisters, Ruth Maasch of Rochester,

Minn., Dorothy Ustby, of Pine Island, Minn., and Lois Wilder

of Phoenix, Ariz.

Marie C. Pedersen was born May 5, 1910, in Ogden, Iowa.



Survivors include two sisters, Katherine Pedersen and Margaret

Grace Fischer was born Oct. 30, 1914, in Algona.



Survivors include her husband, Delmar of Lone Rock; daughters,

Nancy Schelton of Webster City, and Margaret Menz of Woodruff,

S.C.; and one son, Steve Fischer of Lone Rock; five grandchildren;

two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Nancy, Jenette and

Shirlee.



She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

John N. Frerichs

SIOUX CITY



Memorial services for John N. Frerichs, 88, who died on Wednesday

(Dec. 25, 1996) at his home in Sioux City, were held at the Morningside

Reformed Church in Sioux City, on Dec. 28, 1996 with Dr. Louis

E. Lotz officiating. His grandchildren served as casketbearers.

Interment took place at the Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.



John was born Jan. 25, 1908 near Buffalo Center. He was the

son of Nannen and Johanna Onnen Frerichs.



As a young man, he made his confession of faith and became

a member of the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, where

he served in several capacities including elder, deacon and Sunday

School teacher.



He married Stella Jurgens on June 1, 1936, and farmed for many

years before accepting a technical aid position with the Winnebago

Soil Conservation Service. At the time of his death, he was a

member of the Morningside Reformed Church of Sioux City.



Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Stella, of Sioux City;

two daughters, Jurlaine Thomas and her husband, Dick, of Rockwell;

and Janice Schneider and her husband, Paul, of Sioux City; eight

grandchildren; Terry Thomas and his wife, Sherry, of Rockwell;

Scott Thomas and his wife, Susan, of Spirit Lake; Randy Thomas

and his wife, Deborah, of Omaha, Neb.; David Thomas and his wife,

Kimberly of West Des Moines; Ryan Schneider of Durham, N.C.;

Lora Ann Davis and her husband, Scott, of Port Orange, Fla.;

Sherri Kae Jones and her husband, Brad, of St. Clair, Mo.; and

Amy Jo Thomas and her fiance, Charles Hanna, of Ames; and five

great-grandchildren,  Kendra, Kayla, and Kylea Thomas of Rockwell;

Victoria and Zachary Thomas of Spirit Lake; and a host of other

relatives and friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three

sisters.

GRINNELL



H. Donald Larsen, 83, of 1717 Sunset St., Grinnell, died on

Sunday (Dec. 29, 1996) at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.



Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan 2,

at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. John Epperson

and the Rev. Rich Milliken, officiating.



Music will be provided by Sue Martindale, organist, the Rev.

Rich and Karolyn Milliken, vocalists, and Diane Fuller, pianist.



Casket bearers will be Rod Criswell, Merle Doty, Ron Lang, Duane

Larsen, Jerry Schneider and Roger Stewart. Honorary bearers will

be Marion Doonan, Melvin Doty, Alfred Fawcett, Thomas Shaner

and Don Thompson.



Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.



Visitation will be held with the family present from 6:30 to

8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, at the Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell.



Memorials may be made to the Grinnell Christian Church.



He was born on Sept. 13, 1913, near Malcom, Iowa, to Lawrence

Herman and Lena Marie Alertson Larsen. He attended rural school

and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1930.



On Feb. 10, 1938, he was married to Kathryn Lang in Grinnell.



The couple farmed in Chester Township and from 1950 to 1955,

they owned and operated the Larsen Motel east of Grinnell.



 In 1955, he farmed east of Grinnell until his retirement in

1986.



He was a charter member of the Grinnell Christian Church, where

he served as a deacon and trustee. He was also a member of the

Farm Bureau.



Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Larsen of Grinnell; one

son, Dale Larsen of Grinnell; three daughters, Lucille Green

and Donna Corbin, both of Grinnell, and Kay Rader of Mason City;

12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise

Niester of Grinnell.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter,

Marsha Corbin; one brother, Ernest Larsen; and two sisters, Irene

Christiansen and Mae Stewart.

Vernon Raymond Johnson

MASON CITY 



Vernon Raymond Johnson, 70, of 521 N. Pennsylvania Ave., died

Sunday (Dec. 29, 1996) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,

Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the

will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors conducted

by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

chapel and will continue Thursday until time of services.



Vernon Raymond Johnson was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Forest City,

son of Oscar Alvin and Edna Anetta (Langrud) Johnson.



He married Ruth R. Wells on Jan. 25, 1959, in LaPointe City.



Vernon grew up in Forest City and the surrounding area. He served

in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed

in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.



He worked for many years at Mason City Iron and Metal until

retiring.



He enjoyed country western music and dancing. He was a member

of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #733.



Survivors include his wife, Ruth Wells-Johnson, Mason City;

two sisters, Evelyn VanHagen, Northwood, and Pearl Book, Mason

City; four brothers, Orville Johnson, and Clifford Johnson, both

of Mason City, Norman Johnson, Clear Lake, and Larry Johnson,

of Lubbock, Texas; five stepchildren, Robert and John Wells,

both of Mason City, Richard Wells, Nashua, Roger Wells, Northwood,

and Dorothy Grossmann, Davenport; 12 stepgrandchildren; many

stepgreat-grandchildren; and stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and

numerous nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elaine

Query; and three brothers, Wayne, Kenneth and Leonard Johnson.

Ross Allen Noble

RICEVILLE



Ross Allen Noble, 99, passed away on Monday (Dec. 30, 1996)

at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.



A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will

be in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.



Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, is in charge of arrangements.



Ross Noble was born Sept. 15, 1897, the third son of Joseph

and Annie Haigh Noble, in rural Riceville.



He attended rural Pleasant Hill School in Mitchell County and

continued his education at Riceville High School and at Evansville,

Wis.



He then attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison where

he joined the cross-country team and became a famous runner.



Ross joined the service and served his country overseas in World

War I. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.



Ross married Alice Cover at York, Pa. They soon moved to the

state of Michigan where they lived the remainder of their married

lives.



Ross was employed by General Motors for a number of years before

starting his own factory, The Ross Noble Co. in 1955. This company

began as a result of several of Ross's own patented inventions.



Following his stroke, Ross entered the Iowa Veteran's Home,

Marshalltown, Iowa, on Aug. 30, 1982. He resided there until

his death.



Ross is survived by one sister, Merdith (Noble) Vinson.



Ross was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five sisters,

Elva, Orpha, Marian, Ruby and Pearl; and two brothers, Floyd

and Merwin.
