Florence Ella Harms

ACKLEY

Florence E. Harms, 78, of Ackley, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 1996)

at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

John's United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Michael Dack officiating.

Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Brandt-Fritz

Funeral Home.

Florence Ella (Knipfel) Harms was born June 21, 1918, in Franklin

County to Ella (Roegner) and William Knipfel. She was baptized

in  St. John's Church. She received her education at country

school in Franklin County.

On Jan. 12, 1938, she married Benjamin H. Harms. To this union,

nine children were born.

Ben and Florence lived on a farm five and one-half miles north

of Ackley and farmed until moving to town in the fall of 1952.

She was employed at the Ackley Canning Plant, the Ackley Bakery,

Blakes Grove Church Camp, Shugars Super Valu and the Ackley Medical

Center.

Florence was a member of the St. John's Sunshine Circle and

Willing Workers. She also was a member of the Ackley Women's

Club, Ackley Saddle Club, Oakwood Cemetery Society and the Ackley

Heritage Center. She was a volunteer for the Ackley Congregate

Meals.

She retired in 1977 and enjoyed short vacations, visiting and

helping out whenever needed, especially babysitting for the grandchildren.

She loved to do anything to make people happy.

She made over 200 quilts that were all different sizes. Her

favorite pastime for the past several years was to spend afternoons

quilting with other women in her home and their homes. Each quilt

was special to her because usually it would be for some family

member or friend. She enjoyed this time visiting and talking

about everyone's family. They would compare patterns for quilts

and exchange recipes. They always took time out for coffee and

treats.

Florence also loved to go uptown to enjoy the entertainment

provided by the Ackley Music Makers. She loved to go dancing

until she lost her husband, who was her favorite partner.

The past several weeks have given her family time to think about

the impact their mother has had on their lives and they have

already missed her presence in their lives. They have mourned

the quality of life she lost in the end. They also knew how she

felt. She enjoyed a very good life because she had time to raise

her children and spend retirement time with Dad until his death,

and also with her family and friends. Her life could be compared

to the quilts she helped sew. Each small stitch made a creation

come together. Her creation was her family, and they are all

together today to say their goodbyes to their mother, grandma

and sister. She will surely be missed by all.

She is survived by all nine children and their families: Charlene

Roelfs and her husband, Dean of Ackley; Ruth Lichtsinn and her

husband, Ron, of Forest City; Reta Akers and her husband, Earl,

of Wilton; Linda Woodley and her husband, Doug, of Ackley; Harley

Harms and his wife, Anita, of Ackley; Delmer Harms and his wife,

Patti, of Ackley; Larry Harms and his wife, Patty, of Ackley;

Robert Harms and his wife, Jolene, of Ackley; and Mary Schumacher

and her husband, Steve, of Ackley.

She is also survived by 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;

sisters, Mabel Meyer of Eldora and Dorothy Meyer of Ackley; brothers,

Earl Knipfel of Michigan, Merle Knipfel of Iowa Falls, Raymond

Knipfel of Hampton and Arnold Knipfel of Ackley; cousin, Casey

Knipfel of Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1990; her

parents, Ella and William Knipfel; and her brother, Harley Knipfel.
