Marie Van Horn

GREENE 



Marie Van Horn, 95, died Saturday (Nov. 30, 1996) at the Liebe

Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating. Burial

will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral

Chapel, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30

p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday one hour

prior to services.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials

to the Marie Van Horn Memorial Fund at St. Peter's Lutheran Church

in Greene or to the family.



Carrie Marie Kusian Van Horn was born Sept. 6, 1901, near Alexander

in Franklin County.



Survivors include three daughters, Helen Wiebke, Evelyn Wells

and Wanda Johnson, all of Greene; one son, Dale Van Horn of Fort

Collins, Colo.; one sister, Minnie Rover of Charles City; nine

grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren;

and four step-great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers

and five great-grandchildren.

Ronald Swanson

FOREST CITY 



Ronald Swanson, 66, died Saturday (Nov. 30, 1996) at North Iowa

Hospice House, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel

Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Samuelson officiating. Burial

will be in Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery, rural Forest City.



There will be no visitation. His body was cremated. Petersen

Lund Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Ronald Keith Swanson was born in Huron, S.D. on March 28, 1930,

the son of Victor and Cora (Fogue) Swanson. He graduated from

Wilson High School in St. Paul, Minn. in 1947. He served two

years in the U.S. Army and following his discharge from the service,

attended Hamlin University in St. Paul, Minn. Ron was married

to Joan Fosse on March 19, 1950, in Forest City. The couple lived

for a time in Minneapolis, Minn., where Ron worked for Armour

& Company. After a year, the couple returned to Forest City.

Ron has worked in the automotive field for most of his life.

Due to failing health, he retired in 1985.



Ron died at the North Iowa Hospice House in Mason City on Nov.

30, 1996, at the age of 66 years.



He is survived by his wife, Joan Swanson of Forest City; a daughter

and her husband, Valerie and Richard Dillon of Slidell, La.;

four sons, Randall Swanson of Burke, Va., Darrell Swanson and

his wife, Deb, of Aurora, Neb., Jeffrey Swanson and his wife,

Sara, of Las Cruces, N.M., and Kevin Swanson and his wife, Mary,

of Forest City; and 16 grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Curtis.

Robert J. Fischer

ROCKFORD 



Robert J. Fischer Sr., 67, of 401 First St. N.E., Rockford,

died Wednesday (Nov. 27, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center

East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rockford

United Methodist Church. Masonic funeral rites will be conducted

in conjunction with the regular services.  Officiating will be

the Rev. Rosemary Rhode-Frank. Interment will be in the Riverside

Cemetery, Rockford.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Schumburg

Funeral Home.



Bob was a lifelong resident of Rockford following his birth

on March 6, 1929, in Mason City. He was the son of Otto and Meda

(Batty) Fischer. He graduated from the Rockford High School in

1947 and joined his father in the owning and operating of the

Fischer Chevrolet and Implement business in Rockford. Following

his father's death, he continued with the business and with farming.

Bob was united in marriage to Marilyn Kimball on June 2, 1956,

in Clear Lake. He was a member of the Rock-Sirius Masonic Lodge

#294, which is a combination of the Rockford and Nora Springs

lodges. He joined the lodge in 1951. He was also a member of

the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite and El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids.

His favorite pastime was spending time fishing at Clear Lake,

South Dakota and Canada.



Bob is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Rockford; one daughter,

Jane Fischer of Mason City; two sons, Robert and his wife, Sherry

Fischer Jr., and Steven and his wife, Robin Fischer, all of Rockford;

one sister, Peggy Parker of Rockford; five grandchildren, Kate,

Tony, Christopher, Leah and Brennan Fischer; and several nieces

and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ann M. Behr, 92, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Saturday (Nov.

30, 1996) at the Heritage Care Center.



Funeral services are tentatively planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday

at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Bernice ``Shorty'' Louise Johnson

CLEAR LAKE 



Bernice ``Shorty'' Louise Johnson, 69, died Friday (Nov. 29,

1996) at the Oakwood Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Fred

Lewis of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason

City.



Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, and from 8:30 a.m.

until time of services on Tuesday, at the funeral chapel.



Bernice ``Shorty'' Louise Johnson was born July 24, 1927. at

Colo, the daughter of Jesse and Bernice Amy (Dayton) Day. She

attended and received her education in the Colo Schools, graduating

from Colo High School in 1945. While going to school she worked

as a waitress.  After completing her schooling, she worked for

the Donnelly Corporation in Nevada until moving to Clear Lake

in 1946, where she worked as a waitress and bartender in several

businesses. She also worked for E.F. Johnson Company, Sperry

Industries, Unysis Corporation, and was also secretary for the

Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce. In 1983, Bernice and her husband

purchased the Drift Inn in Alexander, which they continued to

operate until her retirement in 1989.



She enjoyed gardening, canning, bowling, and ice skating, and

was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Viking football teams,

as well as the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams, and

she loved life.



She was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post 4868 and leader

of Cub Scout and Brownie troops.



Survivors include her husband, Calvin Johnson of Clear Lake;

one daughter, Diane Kay Lyons and her husband, Fran, of Loveland,

Colo.; one son, David Allen Johnson of Loveland, Colo.; three

grandchildren, Timothy Lyons and his wife, Wendy, Mark Lyons,

and Matthew Johnson; one sister, Margaret Adams and her husband,

Deane, of Brackville, Texas; one brother, Earl Maurice Day of

Brackville, Texas; as well as other relatives and friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Isabelle

Lehrkamp; and one brother, James Eugene Day.

June M. Bradley, 62,



formerly of Clear Lake, passed quietly at her home in Scottsdale

on Tuesday (Nov. 26, 1996).



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran

Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess

officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason

City.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to services

at the church on Monday.



Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society Research

Fund in memory of June Maxine Bradley.



June M. Bradley was born June 3, 1934, in Clear Lake, the daughter

of Theodore and Margaret (Cassens) Schwartz.



June graduated from Plymouth High School in 1952. She married

Roy L. Stansbery and was a devoted mother and homemaker. She

later married L. Dean Bradley and became a life underwriter for

Farm Bureau Insurance until retiring in 1987.



Following cancer treatment, she became an active spokesperson

for the American Cancer Society.



Survivors include her children, Dr. Lois Stansbery Bresaw and

her husband, Thomas, of Silverdale, Wash., Kay Lynn Howard and

her husband, Gerald, of Olathe, Kan., and Wayne Lee Stansbery

and his wife, Deanne, of Zearing; three grandchildren, Joshua

Lubkeman, Nathan Lubkeman and Andrew Howard; seven sisters, Evelyn

Bartusek of Mason City, Eileen Rogness (Laverne) of Fergus Falls,

Minn., Vera Johnson (Vernon) of New Brighton, Minn., Loretta

Koenigsberg (Willis) of Sheffield, Mavis Deardeuff (Clarence)

of Mason City, Lelia Hansen (Alvin) of Rockwell and Judith Borchardt

(Russell) of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Russell

Schwartz.

Herman Oelkers

Herman Oelkers, 80, died Saturday (Nov. 30, 1996) at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Richland

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jerry Gernander officiating. Burial

will be in Richland Lutheran Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup

Funeral Home.



Herman W. Oelkers was born on Aug. 2, 1916, on the family farm

in Richland Township, rural Sheffield, the son of Fred and Katherina

(Kruckenberg) Oelkers. He received his baptism and confirmation

from the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield. He attended

country school before graduating from the Sheffield High School

with the class of 1933. Following school he started farming with

his father until 1945. He was united in marriage to Jessie Harmon

on Nov. 28, 1945, in the Richland Lutheran Church of Thornton.

He worked for Frank Harmon for three years before they moved

into Thornton where he began hauling cream for the Thornton Creamery

until 1954 when he went to work for Hank Nagel as a carpenter.

 He worked for Nagel Construction for 14 years before starting

his own carpentry business, which he operated until retiring.



Herman enjoyed doing woodworking and playing golf.



He was a member of the Richland Lutheran Church of Thornton

where he has served as church treasurer for many years. Herman

served as mayor of Thornton in 1972 and 1973, along with serving

on the City Council in the following years. He also served on

the board of directors for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake

for 10 years.



He is survived by his wife, Jessie, of Thornton; two nephews,

Ray Oelkers of Council Bluffs, and Keith Weber of Faribault,

Minn.; and one niece, Judy Holloway of West Plaines, Mo.

George Wessels was born May 18, 1912 in Avery Township.



Survivors include his wife, Emma of Belmond; two sons, Jerald

Wessels and Ardell Boelman, both of Belmond; and two grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three

sisters.

Shirley Engebretson, 73, died Saturday (Nov. 30, 1996) at her

home.

Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Shirley Engebretson was born Nov. 25, 1923 in Jewell, the daughter

of Charles and Blanche (Clair) Hage.  She received her baptism

on March 5, 1924 in the Bethesda Lutheran Church of Jewell.

On Oct. 20, 1951 she was confirmed in the St. Paul Evangelical

Lutheran Church by the Rev. John C. Langholz.  She started her

education in Jewell and finished in the Sheffield school system

before becoming united in marriage to Rolland D. Engebretson

on March 2, 1940 in the Methodist Church in Mason City.  They

made their home in Sheffield for one year before moving to the

farm south of Thornton where she worked side by side with her

husband.  In 1977 they purchased a home and moved into Thornton,

where she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and the

neighbor children when they would stop to visit.



She was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church

of Thornton.



She is survived by one daughter, Sherill Engebretson of Mason

City; one son, Ron Engebretson and his wife, Marilyn, of Sheffield;

two grandchildren, Lori Robison and her husband, Chuck, of Mason

City, and David Engebretson and his wife, Melanie, of Thornton;

and four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, Amanda and Taylor.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland, in 1986;

her parents; and two sisters.

Marie Van Horn

GREENE 



Funeral services for Marie Van Horn, 95, of 502 W. Traer St.,

will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church

with the Rev. Lance Kittleson officiating.  Burial will be in

Rose Hill Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral

Chapel, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30

p.m.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at

the church on Tuesday.



Carrie Marie Kusian was born Sept. 6, 1901 on a farm near Alexander

in Franklin County, the daughter of Otto and Katherina ``Kate''

(Symens) Kusian, and died Sunday (Nov. 30, 1996) at the Liebe

Care Center.



In 1905 she and her family moved to Ackley where they lived

for two years, and then they moved to the rural Dumont area where

she received her education in the rural schools near there.

As a young lady she was employed as a waitress in a restaurant

in Dumont.  On March 10, 1920 she was united in marriage to Dick

Van Horn at the Evangelical Church in Dumont.  To this union

were born four children.



They first farmed east of Hampton for three years, and then

farmed southwest of Greene from 1923 to 1944.  They then farmed

in the Vilmar area and later north of Bristow, until they retired

and moved into their home on North Second St. in Greene.  Mr.

Van Horn died on Feb. 22, 1970.



She was baptized at the Evangelical Church in Dumont on June

24, 1917, and later became a member of St. John's Evangelical

Lutheran Church at Vilmar.  Since May 9, 1967 she has been a

faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene where

she was a member of the Ladies Aid Society.



Marie's interests included all types of handiwork, which included

crocheting, tatting and quilting.  She loved to bake and entertain

guests in her home.  Most of all, she loved her grandchildren

and great-grandchildren.



Living family members include three daughters, Helen Wiebke,

Evelyn Wells, and Wanda and her husband, Ray A. Johnson, all

of Greene; one son, Dale and his wife, Betty Van Horn, of Fort

Collins, Colo.; one sister, Minnie Rover of Charles City; nine

grandchildren, Ron Wiebke, Rynonda Franzen, Roger Wells, Mary

Kock, Becky Van Horn, Daylene Stelpflug, Starr Quam, Shari Oleson,

and Jolene Kraft; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren;

and four step-great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four brothers,

Charley in 1908, Fred in 1967, Julius in 1975, and Earnest in

1987; two sons-in-law, Willard Wiebke and Howard Wells; and five

great-grandchildren.

Mariann Cunningham

MARSHALLTOWN 



Mariann (Mrs. Larry) Cunningham, 64, of 204 N. 15th Ave., died

Saturday morning (Nov. 30, 1996) at her home while in the care

of the Iowa River Hospice.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday

at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Jerry Kopacek as celebrant.

Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.



Friends may call at Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home after 5 p.m.

today.  There will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

today at the funeral home.



Mariann Cunningham was born May 9, 1932 in Mason City, the daughter

of George and Veronica Gribben Deming.  She received her education

in the area of her birth, graduating from Mason City High School

in 1950.



On June 19, 1952 she was united in marriage to Larry Cunningham

in Mason City.  They resided there until moving to Marshalltown

in 1956.  While in Marshalltown she was employed for several

years with Lennox Industries.



Mrs. Cunningham was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and

the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, as well as being

past Girl Scout and Boy Scout leaders, and active in the PTA

in earlier years.



Surviving her are her loving husband of 46 years, Larry, who

lives at their home on North 15th Ave.; five sons, Terry Cunningham

of Marshalltown, Guy Cunningham and his wife, Patricia Wengert,

of Des Moines, Jay and his wife, Elizabeth Cunningham, of Front

Royal, Va., Casey Cunningham of Des Moines and his wife, Christy

Cunningham, also of Des Moines, and Todd Cunningham of Des Moines;

three daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Harold) Foulk of LeGrand, Julie

(Mrs. Mike) Ellis of Marshalltown, and Cris Cunningham of Marshalltown;

and 20 grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Betty

Lovejoy.

Ann was born on Feb. 27, 1904 in Northwood, the daughter of

Albert and Ann (Spiroch) Cinkle.  She attended school in Plymouth.

She was united in marriage to Charles J. Behr on July 1, 1929

at Mason City.  She and her husband farmed near Rockwell and

then later in the Mason City area.  Following her husband's death

in 1972 she left the farm to live in Mason City.  She enjoyed

crocheting, being a homemaker, and especially being with her

grandchildren.  She attended Holy Family Catholic Church.



Ann is survived by one daughter, Sally and her husband, John

Lewis, of Dubuque; one sister, Margaret and her husband, James

Gross, of Mason City; one brother, Frank and his wife, Stella

Cinkle, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie and

her husband, Robert O'Donnell, Matthew and his wife, Annette

Lewis, Carey and his wife, Julianna Lewis, Christina Lewis and

her fiance, Eric Kostamo, Mark and his wife, Jennifer Lewis,

Eric and his wife, Krista Lewis, Brian and his wife, Lori Lewis,

Jeffrey Lewis and G. Kyle Lewis; and eight great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters,

Rose, Marcella and Irma; and two brothers, Albert and Edward.

by American Legion Post #377.

Harold Boeckholt was born July 30, 1922 in Bancroft.



Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Leininger of Burley,

Idaho, and Cathy Kulland of Roosevelt, Utah; one son, Richard

Boeckholt of San Ramon, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-

grandchildren; two sisters, Elda Cushman of Buffalo Center,

and Eleanor Birch of Des Moines; and two brothers, Donald

Boeckholt and Harvey Boeckholt, both of Des Moines.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one sister,

and one brother.

John Durby was born Jan. 26, 1923 in Woden.



Survivors include his wife, DeLores Durby of Phoenix, Ariz.;

two daughters, Gwendyth Carstens and LoAnn Durby of Phoenix,

Ariz.; one son, Lon Durby of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters,

two brothers, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

    Anne McGlade White passed away peacefully Nov. 29, 1996, at

    the Heritage Care Center.



    Anne was born Jan. 24, 1913, in Newark, Del.



    She is the beloved mother of Eunice White Lattimer and her husband,

    Jerry; and the grandmother of Amy, Jay and David Lattimer, all

    of Mason City.

    MASON CITY 



    Alfred B.C. ``Al'' Dann, 78, of 1116 Maple Drive, died Thursday

    (Nov. 28, 1996) at his daughter's home in Melbourne, Fla.



    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First

    United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin

    Ackerson and the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Interment

    will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



    There will be no visitation as the body was cremated. Major

    Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge

    of arrangements.



    Memorials may be given to the Al Dann Memorial Fund.



    Alfred B.C. ``Al'' Dann was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Dallas Center,

    son of Alva and Cora (Pearson) Dann. He was raised on a farm

    near Ankeny, graduating from Ankeny High School in 1935. He graduated

    from Business College, Des Moines, in 1940.



    He served in the United States Army for four and one-half years

    during World War II landing in France three days after D-Day

    in 1941 and discharged on Dec. 1, 1945. He was in the Battle

    of the Bulge. He served in France, Belgium and Germany with the

    397th anti-aircraft Battalion, First Army.



    He was married to Helen Brecht on Dec. 7, 1945, in Danville,

    and made their home in Des Moines, moving to Mason City in 1952.



    He worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway for 15 years

    in Boone, Des Moines and Mason City. He was employed by Midland

    Cooperatives for 25 years in Mason City and Minneapolis, retiring

    in 1980. After his retirement, he worked at Carleton Stewart

    Music Store for several years.



    His hobbies were collecting old road maps, collecting articles

    and stories with several videos of Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway.

    Since 1937, he had scrap books for each year showing pictures

    of automobiles which includes the DeLorean, Hupmobile, etc.,

    and many of the early cars which are no longer in existence.



    He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church,

    member and soloist  of the Jubilee Bell Choir of the church for

    15 years, charter member of Mended Hearts, Inc. Chapter #222,

    charter member of the River City Barbershop Chorus, and member

    of the V.F.W. Post #733.



    His church and his home were of the utmost importance to him.

    He was a devoted and loving husband and father.



    Survivors include his daughters, Corinne Oleson and her husband,

    Dean, of Melbourne, Fla.; Claudia Cooper and her husband, Dennis,

    of Mason City, and Carie Dann of Greeley, Colo.; grandchildren,

    Christy Oleson, of Melbourne, Fla., and Wesley and William Cooper,

    of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.



    He will join those who have preceded him in death, his parents;

    his wife, Helen, who passed away on Dec. 16, 1995; three brothers,

    Harry who died in infancy, Willard and Ralph; and three sisters,

    Hannah Woods, Helen Howard and Minnie Zelle.

    Shirley Engebretson, 73, of Thornton, died Saturday (Nov. 30,

    1996) at her home.



    Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul

    Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.



    Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Grarup Funeral

    Shirley Engebretson was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Jewell, the daughter

    of Charles and Blanche (Clair) Hage.  She received her baptism

    on March 5, 1924, in the Bethesda Lutheran Church of Jewell.



    On Oct. 20, 1951, she was confirmed in the St. Paul Evangelical

    Lutheran Church by the Rev. John C. Langholz.  She started her

    education in Jewell and finished in the Sheffield school system

    before becoming united in marriage to Rolland D. Engebretson

    on March 2, 1940, in the Methodist Church in Mason City.



    They made their home in Sheffield for one year before moving

    to the farm south of Thornton where she worked side by side with

    her husband.



    In 1977 they purchased a home and moved into Thornton, where

    she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and the neighbor

    children when they would stop to visit.



    She was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church

    of Thornton.



    She is survived by one daughter, Sherill Engebretson of Mason

    City; one son, Ron Engebretson and his wife, Marilyn, of Sheffield;

    two grandchildren, Lori Robison and her husband, Chuck, of Mason

    City, and David Engebretson and his wife, Melanie, of Thornton;

    four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, Amanda and Taylor;

    and one sister, Ruby Boehnke and her husband, Ray, of Garner.



    She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland, in 1986;

    her parents; and two sisters.

    Kenneth `Bill' William Nicholson

    DOUGLAS, Ariz.



    Kenneth ``Bill'' William Nicholson, 59, died Friday (Nov. 29,

    1996) at his home in Douglas.



    A memorial service will be held today at the Lutheran Church

    in Bisbee.



    Bill wished to be cremated with his ashes scattered at Turkey

    Creek.



    Bill was born May 9, 1937, in Sheffield, Iowa, the son of Kenneth

    and Irene (Emhoff) Nicholson.



    He attended and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1955.



    He married Delores Oak on Oct. 11, 1957. There were two daughters

    and one son born of this marriage. They made their home in Mason

    City, Iowa, where he worked for the Mason City Police Department.



    He also lived in Osage and Leland, Iowa, where he worked for

    plumbing contractors.



    In 1966, Bill moved to Bisbee and there married Martha Harshaw.

    They made their home in Douglas, where he owned and operated

    his own plumbing business.



    On Oct. 22, 1975, Bill was involved in a motorcycle accident

    that left him partially paralyzed.



    Survivors include Martha Nicholson of Bisbee; his mother, Irene

    Markwardt of Sheffield, Iowa; two daughters, Kim Whitmore and

    her husband, Gene, of Spencer, Iowa, and Connie Moehlman and

    her husband, Michael, Story City, Iowa; one son, Mark Nicholson

    of Iowa Falls, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nathaniel, Benjamin

    and Dominic Whitmore; two brothers, Ronald Nicholson, Bisbee,

    and L. Carl Markwardt of Sheffield, Iowa; three sisters, Paulette

    Foss and her husband, Dennis, of Sheffield, Iowa; Patricia Smit

    of Sheffield, Iowa, and Catherine Stevens and her husband, Kenneth,

    of Nora Springs, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.



    He will be lovingly missed by many friends and family.

    Ann was born on Feb. 27, 1904, in Northwood, the daughter of

    Albert and Ann (Spiroch) Cinkle.  She attended school in Plymouth.



    She was united in marriage to Charles J. Behr on July 1, 1929,

    at Mason City.



    She and her husband farmed near Rockwell and then later in

    the Mason City area.



    Following her husband's death in 1972 she left the farm to

    live in Mason City.



    She enjoyed crocheting, being a homemaker, and especially

    being with her grandchildren.



    She attended Holy Family Catholic Church.



    Ann is survived by one daughter, Sally and her husband, John

    Lewis, of Dubuque; one sister, Margaret and her husband, James

    Gross, of Mason City; one brother, Frank and his wife, Stella

    Cinkle, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie and

    her husband, Robert O'Donnell; Matthew and his wife, Annette

    Lewis; Carey and his wife, Julianna Lewis; Christina Lewis and

    her fiance, Eric Kostamo; Mark and his wife, Jennifer Lewis;

    Eric and his wife, Krista Lewis; Brian and his wife, Lori Lewis;

    Jeffrey Lewis and G. Kyle Lewis; and eight great-grandchildren.

    Yerington.

    Ancel `Sig' Aasland

    JOICE



    Ancel ``Sig'' Aasland, 82, of Appleton, Minn., formerly of

    Joice, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 1996) at the Appleton Municipal

    Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for several years.



    A memorial-visitation will be held tonight at the Vaala Funeral

    Home, Appleton, Minn.



    Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany

    Lutheran Church, Joice. Visitation will be held one hour before

    services at the church in Joice. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake

    Mills, is in charge of arrangements.



    Ancel E. Aasland was born March 15, 1914,  at Joice, to Axel

    and Emma (Jacobson) Aasland.



    He was baptized April 12, 1914, at Bethany Lutheran Church,

    Joice, and confirmed July 1, 1928, at Trinity Lutheran Church,

    Mason City. He was educated in Joice and Mason City, where he

    spent his youth.



    On Jan. 1, 1938, he was united in marriage to Adeline M. Bang

    of Joice, at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Mason City.



    Together they enjoyed 29 years of married life in the Joice

    area. Mrs. Aasland preceded him in death July 8, 1967.



    Mr. Aasland  had a trucking business and lived west of Joice

    where he farmed until 1965, when he began working for the Joice

    School as custodian and bus driver.



    In 1971, he moved to Lake Mills, and was employed by the Lake

    Mills School as head of transportation until his retirement in

    1985, when he moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Madison,

    Minn. In 1989, he moved to the Appleton Nursing Home.



    Survivors include his son, James A. Aasland of Appleton, Minn.;

    his daughter, Vivien L. Hansen, Humboldt; a sister, Pauline Tarr,

    Clear Lake; a brother, Robert Ellingson, Los Angeles, Calif.;

    four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Adeline;

    brother, Burton; a sister, Myrtle; a brother, Kenneth; and

    granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Aasland.



    He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends and

    a host of school children whose lives he touched.

    Tilda ``Tillie'' G. Weseman was born Jan. 22, 1909, in Winnebago

    County, in rural Vinje, the daughter of Theodore and Gunda (Erickson)

    Johnson.



    She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through

    confirmation at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje. She attended

    and received her education in the rural Winnebago County School

    System.



    She was united in marriage to Robert Weseman in Fairmont, Minn.

    He preceded her in death in 1966.



    Throughout her life, she was considered by her many nieces and

    nephews as a great second mother, who also raised and cared for

    a niece, Betty Ann Simmons.



    She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, gardening, reading, dancing,

    cards and cooking.



    Survivors  include two sisters, Elnora Elwood of Algona, and

    Edith Neuman of Lakota; one sister-in-law, Pearl Johnson, Rochester,

    Minn.; as well as many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews

    and other relatives and friends.



    Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents,

    four brothers and three sisters.

    Elsie J. Clayburg, 85, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died Tuesday

    (Dec. 3, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



    Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Major Erickson

    Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.,  where other arrangements

    are incomplete.

    Ethel Korth, 73, of Dows, died Wednesday (Dec. 4, 1996) at the

    Hampton Health Care Center.



    Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Willim Funeral Home,

    George A. Jermier

    CHARLES CITY



    George A. Jermier, 90, formerly of 100 Park Lane, died Wednesday

    (Dec. 4, 1996) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.



    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

    Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. Karen

    Rask Behling officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory

    Gardens, rural Charles City, with graveside military honors conducted

    by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.



    Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and one hour

    prior to services on Saturday at the funeral chapel, where other

    arrangements are incomplete.

    Henry Pruter

    MANLY 



    Henry Pruter, 94, of Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 1996) at the

    Manly Care Center.



    Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Champion

    Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating.

    Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.



    Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Champion

    Funeral Home.



    Henry Pruter was born Oct. 28, 1902, at Wilster, Germany.



    Survivors include one sister, Elsa Kohnke of Osage.



    He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

    Donald Buss

    ALLISON 



    Donald Buss, 67, of Allison, died Tuesday (Dec. 3, 1996) at

    home in Des Moines.



    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Allison

    United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Paul Schultz officiating.

    Burial will be in Allison Cemetery.



    Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel

    Funeral Home.



    Donald Buss was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Allison.



    Survivors include his mother, Nadine Buss of Allison.



    He was preceded in death by his father and one infant sister.

    Dr. Patrick T. Phalen

    SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. 



    Dr. Patrick T. Phalen, 72, of Scottsdale,  died Monday (Dec.

    2, 1996) in Scottsdale.



    A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Brophy

    College Preparatory Chapel, 4701 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.



    Whitney and Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home, Scottsdale, is in charge

    of arrangements.



    Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society,

    2929 East Thomas Road, Phoenix, Ariz. 85016, in his memory.



    Dr. Patrick T. Phalen was born in Mason City, Iowa. He was a

    U.S. Army veteran.



    Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Phalen; three daughters, Maureen,

    Kathleen and Mary Jo Phalen; five sons, Thomas, James, Michael,

    Patrick and Timothy Phalen; four grandchildren; one sister, Midge

    VerHelst; one brother, Michael Phalen; and two cousins, Tim Phalen,

    and Jean Paulson, both of Mason City, Iowa.

    Richard Frank Oppman

    BELMOND 



    Richard Frank Oppman Sr., 59, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Dec.

    3, 1996) at his home.



    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

    Francis Xavier Church, with Father John Paisley and Deacon Nick

    Schmit officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery,

    with graveside services under the direction of the Belmond Honor

    Guard.



    Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Dugger-Ewing

    Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. Scriptural

    wake service. Visiation will also be held one hour prior to services

    at the church on Saturday.



    Richard, the son of Frank and Katherine Ginder Oppman, was born

    Dec. 29, 1936, in Mason City.



    He attended school in Manly and then entered the Navy in 1954.



    On June 7, 1959, he was united in marriage with Pauline Vodden

    at St. Mary's Church in Roxbury, Mass.



    Richard worked in maintenance at S.B. Thomas and a mechanic

    at South Shore Buick. Over the course of several moves between

    Iowa and Massachusetts, Richard worked for the city of Mason

    City at the waterworks, also for the Mason City Mechanic Department,

    owned and operated a gas station and for the past three and one-half

    years, he worked at Eaton Corporation in the maintenance department.



    Richard loved his kids more than anything. He loved being a

    father and grandfather. He also liked fishing, especially with

    his brother, George.



    Richard was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Belmond.



    Survivors include include three daughters, Cynthia Mahnesmith

    of Weymouth, Mass.; Kim Gobeli and her husband, Dale, of Belmond,

    and Mary Schuver and her husband, Chad, of Belmond; five sons,

    Richard Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Klemme; Frank of Mason City;

    George and his wife, Michelle, of Belmond; Ray of Meservey, and

    Patrick of Belmond; 13 grandchildren, Robert and Melissa Mahnesmith,

    Timmy, Jesse and Jake Gobeli, Joey and Danielle Peveronis, Andrew

    and Justin Oppman, Luke and Cain Schuver, Amanda and Richard

    (III) Oppman; his stepmother, Stella Oppman of Manly; four brothers,

    George Oppman of Mason City; Mike Oppman of Manly; Mark Oppman

    of Manly, and Orvin Plante of San Antonio, Texas; and four sisters,

    Rose Marie Manzanarez of Bremerton, Wash.; Kathleen Lievrouw

    of Mason City; Deloris Boster of Mason City, and Darlene Colby,

    Mason City.



    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline,

    in 1993; two sisters; and one brother.

    Glennis `Glenn' A. Orpen

    MASON CITY 



    Glennis ``Glenn'' A. Orpen, 65, 502 S. Fillmore Ave., died Monday

    (Dec. 2, 1996) of a heart attack in rural Mason City.



    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Saviour's

    Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen

    officiating. Burial will be in Elk Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery,

    rural Kensett.



    Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today  at Major Erickson

    Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to

    services at the church on Friday.



    In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials to be directed

    to the Elevator Fund at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.



    Glennis E. Orpen was born June 1, 1931, the son of Bennie and

    Olga (Kalgaarden) Orpen in Brookfield Township, rural Kensett.



    Glenn was baptized and confirmed at Elk Creek Lutheran Church,

    rural Kensett.



    Glenn also attended Brookfield #8 Rural School.



    Glenn married Janice Ficken in 1959.



    Glenn worked for Wayne Feeds in the plant from 1958-1993. Glenn

    also enjoyed doing seasonal farmwork for the Nicholas family

    of Clear Lake for over 30 years.



    Glenn married Betty Hovland on June 5, 1981, at the Bethany

    Church in Kensett.



    Glenn graduated from the Mason City School of Auctioneering

    on Nov. 21, 1987. He helped several auctioneers in Mason City

    and it was a hobby he enjoyed.



    Glenn also enjoyed calling bingo at the V.F.W., dancing, walking,

    biking, mowing lawns, traveling and trips to Branson and just

    being busy.



    He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and the Moose

    Lodge.



    Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Orpen, of Mason City; one

    son, Dennis Orpen and his wife, Deb, of Chandler, Ariz.; one

    daughter, Lori Orpen of Mason City; two grandchildren, Jennifer

    and Stephanie Orpen, Chandler, Ariz.; one stepson, Thomas Hovland

    of Mason City; one stepdaughter, LuAnne Meehan and her husband,

    John, of Canoga Park, Calif.; four stepgrandchildren, Sarah Meehan,

    Roberta, Jerry and Tony Hovland; one brother, Orvis Orpen and

    his wife, Diann, of Northwood; one sister-in-law, Dilene Orpen,

    Northwood; one niece, Joyce Reininger, Edina, Minn.; and several

    cousins.



    He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Alvin

    Orpen in 1995.
