Vernon ``Dick'' Frein

GARNER 



Vernon ``Dick'' Frein, 73, died Saturday (Dec. 14, 1996) at

the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. John W. Hemann as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a scriptural

wake service at 7 p.m., all at the Catalado Funeral Chapel, 160

E. Fourth St.



Vernon ``Dick'' Lawrence Frein, the son of Joseph and Julia

(Hemann) Frein, was born April 27, 1923, at Stacyville.  After

attending school at Osage he moved to Garner where he worked

for various farmers.  He served his country during World War

II in the U.S. Army.  After the service he returned to Garner

and established his own trucking business.



On June 24, 1949, he married Elaine M. Goll in Garner.  They

made their home in Garner all of their married life.  Dick also

worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City from 1969 until

he retired in 1986.  He enjoyed woodworking and spending time

with his grandchildren and family at his lakeside cabin.



He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Boniface

Men's Society, the Garner American Legion, where he served as

chaplain, and served on the board of the Memorial Building.



He is survived by his wife, Elaine Frein of Garner; five children,

Terry Frein and his wife, Kristie, and their children, Melissa

Frein, Nate Frein, Aaron Lindsley and Scott Lindsley, all of

Waukee; Debra Juhl and special friend, Tom Kral, and her children,

Kelly Juhl, Kory Juhl, Kristy Juhl and Brady Juhl, all of Garner;

Mark Frein and his wife, Danielle, and their children, Lindsay

Frein, Jordan Frein and Karlee Frein, all of Fort Dodge;  Cindy

Bolie and her husband, David, and their children, David Bolie

Jr. and Brittany Bolie, all of Buffalo Center; and Brad Frein

and his wife, Shelly, and their children, Ben Frein and Kacie

Frein, all of Garner; two sisters, Mary Alice Merrick of Osage

and Pat Ahrens and her husband, Don, of Mason City; three brothers,

Bill Frein and his wife, Alice, of Des Moines, Marvin ``Bud''

Frein of Minneapolis, Minn., and Bob Frein and his wife, Marlene,

of Osage; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Frein of Forest City,

Arlene Frein of Garner and Pat Frein Westendorf of Waterloo,

and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Julia  Frein;

an infant sister, Ruth Ann Frein; and five brothers, Don Frein,

Jerome Frein, Harry Frein, Dean Frein and Wilmer Frein.

Pearl Thompson, 87, died Sunday (Dec. 15, 1996) at the Lake

Mills Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at  Salem

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Dykstra and the Rev. Sara

Beth Akre officiating.  Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.



Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on

Wednesday.



Pearl Thompson was born Sept. 28, 1909, in rural Lake Mills.



Survivors include one son, Roger Thompson of Lake Mills; one

daughter, Phyllis Moen of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren; and

13 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers,

two sisters and one great-granddaughter.

Thomas Alan Meyer, 52, died Saturday (Dec. 14, 1996) at the

Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephany Sanborn officiating.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Cemetery, Whittemore.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter

Funeral Home.



Thomas Alan Meyer was born June 4, 1944, in Whittemore.



Survivors include his wife, Wilma, of Buffalo Center; two sons,

Alan of Iowa Falls and Randy of Forest City; his mother, Lillian

Meyer of Algona; two sisters, Gwen Thilges of Dakota City and

Carolyn Frederiksen of Livermore; two brothers, Gerald of Whittemore

and Dale of Denver, Colo.; and three grandsons.



He was preceded in death by his father.

Alvina Howe, 96, died Saturday (Dec. 14, 1996) at the Ninth

Street Chautauqua Guest Home.



A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at

Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Stanley Hayek and

the Rev. Walter Brunkan officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's

Cemetery.



Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral

Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

The St. Joseph's Circle will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. Tuesday

at the funeral home, where there will also be a parish vigil

scripture service at 7:30 p.m.



Alvina Frances Vala Howe was born Jan. 1, 1900, in Roseville.



Survivors include her husband, John, of Charles City; two daughters,

Virginia Brinkman and Evelyn Jensen, both of Charles City; 14

grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one grandson,

six brothers and one sister.

Helene Bright, 92, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Friday (Dec.

13, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major

Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev.

Richard Scheerer of First Congregational United Church of Christ

officiating.  Interment will be in Waucoma Cemetery, Waucoma.



Friends may call from 9 a.m. Tuesday until time of services

at the funeral home.



Memorials may be given to the Helene Bright Memorial Fund.



Helene Bright was born Dec. 26, 1903, in Waucoma, the daughter

of Bert and Nellie (Potter) Bright.  She graduated from Waucoma

High School and went on to receive her B.A. degree from the University

of Iowa.  Helene taught school at West Union and Spencer before

coming to Mason City.  She taught 26 years in the English department

at Mason City High School, as well as junior high at Monroe and

John Adams.  She retired from teaching in 1969.  She was a member

of First Congregational United Church of Christ.



Survivors include several cousins.



She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ross

Bright.

Alonzo ``Lonnie'' Lahmon, 83, died Friday (Dec. 13, 1996) at

the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Schumburg

Funeral Home with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank of First United

Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery,

rural Nora Springs.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until

time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dale L. Thompson, 92, of Osage, died Monday (Dec. 16, 1996)

at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Champion

Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Burial will

be in the Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral

home and until time of services on Thursday.



Dale L. Thompson was born Jan. 16, 1904, in Clarion.



Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Barker of Little Cedar,

and Shirley Sletten of Osage; one stepdaughter, Esther Schafer

of Muscatine; two sons, Dean Thompson of Osage, and Marvin Thompson

of Mason City; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one

great-great-grandchild; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, second

wife, one brother, one sister and one stepdaughter.

Kim Marie Martinek, 43, of Wesley, died Monday (Dec. 16, 1996)

at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Bormann officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.



Visitation will be held after 2:30 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-

Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. Catholic Daughters of

Americas rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.



Kim Marie Martinek was born Oct. 22, 1953, at Sioux City.



Survivors include her parents, Harold and Dorothy Martinek,

Wesley;  one brother, Jerry Martinek of Belmond; three half sisters,

Hazel Wagner of Algona, Ruth Higley of Bettendorf, and Jane Plonka

of Chicago, Ill.; and one half brother, Ed Dermody of Los Angeles,

Calif.

Helen Weaver, 75, of Whittemore, died Monday (Dec. 16, 1996)

at home.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lyle D. Hansen officiating. Burial

will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Helen Weaver was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Lotts Creek.



Survivors include her husband, Earl Weaver, of Whittemore; two

daughters, Lori Williams, Whittemore, and Faith Pederson of Blairstown;

three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters,

Lois Zimmerman of Whittemore and Marie Lee of Mesa, Ariz.; and

two brothers, John Leininger, Albert Lea, Minn., and Harlan Leininger,

Ayrshire.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

Johnny O. Iverson, 89, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Dec. 16,

1996) at the Lake Mills Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Salem Lutheran

Church, with the Rev. Sara Akre and the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.

Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Cemetery with military rites

by Otto/Chose American Legion Post No. 235.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mittelstadt

Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.



Johnny O. Iverson was born April 15, 1907, in Scarville.



Survivors include his wife, Olga, of Lake Mills; two daughters,

Janeen Bader and Becky Sanders of Des Moines; two sons, Donald

Iverson of Des Moines and Ronald Iverson of Overland Park, Kan.;

eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Adelyn

Bradford of Alexandria, Minn.; and two brothers, Wilford Iverson

and Helene Iverson, both of Lake Mills.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one

brother.

Herbert Henry Schwartz, 69, of Belmond, died Sunday (Dec. 15,

1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St.

Francis Xavier Church, with the Rev. John Paisley and Deacon

Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic

Cemetery with military graveside services under the direction

of the Belmond Honor Guard.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Dugger-Ewing

Funeral Home, with a 2:30 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. Scriptural

wake service.



Herbert Schwartz was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Wesley.



Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Belmond; two stepsons,

John Kaduce of Des Moines, and Richard Kaduce of Mason City;

six stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two

sisters, Christina Olsen of Klemme and Caroline Kluckhohn of

Klemme.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one

sister in infancy.

Alonzo `Lonnie' Lahmon

ROCKFORD 



Alonzo ``Lonnie'' Lahmon, 83, 103 First Ave. S.E., Rockford,

and formerly of rural Greene, rural Clarksville, Waterloo, ad

Nora Springs, died Friday (Dec. 13, 1996) at the Ninth Street

Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, following a brief illness.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Schumburg

Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary

Rohde-Frank of the First United Methodist Church, Rockford, officating.

Burial will be in the Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until

time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.



Alonzo ``Lonnie'' Lahmon was born March 24, 1913, rural Greene.

He was raised in the rural Greene and Clarksville areas.



Following his education in a country school house, he began

a dairy farm operation. He left the farm to enter the armed forces

during World War II. He served in the 241st Division in California.



He returned to Iowa and settled in the Waterloo area, where

he opened Lahmon's Garage on Logan Avenue. He closed the garage

to return to dairy farming.



Following his retirement, he settled in Rockford for about 10

years. He moved to the Nora Springs Care Center, and just recently

to the Chautauqua Home in Charles City.



Mr. Lahmon was a knowledgable mechanic, preferring to work on

General Motors cars and International farm equipment.



He was an avid river and lake fisherman, although he never liked

to eat fish.



Living family members include two brothers, Louis Lahmon of

Osakis, Minn., and Leonard Lahmon of New Hartford; and a sister,

Mary Dunfee of Waterloo.



He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lyle,

Leon, Leslie and Leo Lahmon; and two sisters, Lillian Eckbrod

and Leola Chamberlain.

Monica Anderson Gribben

DENVER, Colo. 



Monica Anderson Gribben died Friday (Dec. 6, 1996) at the age

of 32.



Monica lived in Denver for the last six years, where she graduated

from the University of Colorado with a master's degree in Physical

Therapy and was a uniquely gifted therapist at Denver General

Hospital.



Monica was an avid lover of the outdoors and enjoyed mountain

biking, hiking, rafting, back country skiing and camping.



She loved children and had the knack of finding a child's favorite

toy or sharing a special interest. She had an intense curiosity

and passion for life.



Monica was born on March 25, 1964, in St. Paul, Minn., and was

raised in Worthington, Minn., and Mason City, Iowa.



In high school, she pioneered the women's cross country running

program and was editor of the school newspaper.



She married John Gribben on Aug. 29, 1992,  in Peaceful Valley,

Colo.



In addition to her husband, Monica was loved by her parents,

Francine and Don Anderson, of St. Paul, Minn.; sisters, Virginia

Buysse of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Elizabeth Clark of Worthington,

Minn.; and Amy Zortman, St. Paul, Minn.; a brother, Fred Anderson

of Sioux City, Iowa; nine nieces and nephews; her parents-in-law,

Ralph and June Gribben of Arvada, Colo., and their family; as

well as a special friend, Jana Walsh of Osage, Iowa.



Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 11, 1996, at St.

John's Lutheran Church, 700 S. Franklin, Denver, Colo.



Horan McConaty Funeral Home, Denver, Colo., was in charge of

arrangements.

Eloise G. Hill

MASON CITY



Eloise G. (Hall) Hill, 84, died Sunday (Dec. 8, 1996) at the

Alden Nursing Home, Lisle, Ill.



Born Sept. 24, 1912, in Mason City to John and Lila (Potter)

Hall, she lived with her family in Mason City for several years

where her father owned a small dairy. Later the family moved

to a farm near Nora Springs.



Eloise was graduated from Mason City High School and Junior

College (normal training).



On June 3, 1934, she married Clarence Hill of Forest City. The

couple lived for several years in Forest City and Clarion before

settling in Mason City where they lived more than 50 years.



Eloise was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved

baking, sewing and gardening.



She is survived by her husband, Clarence, who resides with daughter,

Constance (Mark) Sweeney, 5913 Dover, Lisle, Ill. 60532. In addition,

she is survived by daughters, Sharon (Forrest) Gorkowski, Toledo,

Ohio; and Dorothy (Norman) Baker, Decatur, Ill.; grandchildren,

Cathy Gorkowski (John) Moyihan, Jim (Jeanine) Sweeney, Jenny

and Steven Gorkowski, Michelle, Megan and Patrick Sweeney, Kristen,

Jason, Tyler and Erik Baker; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Conor,

Owen and Bailey Moynihan; sisters, Dorothy Wolf, N. Manchester,

Ind., Mildred (Harold) Turk, Clarion, and Gertrude Shasky, Phoenix,

Ariz.



In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her

sister, Arlene Braheney; and grandson, David Sweeney.



Services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996, in Lisle, Ill.

The family suggests memorials to Good Shepherd Nursing Home,

Mason City, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia

Ave., with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson officiating. Burial will

be in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to

services at the church.

Helen was born Jan. 3, 1916, in New Richland, Minn., daughter

of Ellsworth and Chloe (Orms) Marvel.



She grew up in New Hampton and graduated from New Hampton High

School.



She taught school in Dayton Township #7 school for two years

and for three years in the Boyd school.



She was married on July 17, 1940, to Harold O. Stephens, at

Hazelton.



She lived in Chickasaw County on a farm near Ionia for several

years. She moved to Mason City in 1954.



She worked for the Hanford Hotel for five years, the Oakville

Pin Factory for five years, and St. Clair Starks for 22 years

as a tailor.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.



Survivors include her husband, Harold O. Stephens, Mason City;

two daughters, Janice Sanders and her husband, Doug, of Charles

City, and Joyce Kirkendall and her husband, Chuck, of Saukville,

Wis.; one son, Jerry Stephens and his wife, Kathy, Trenton, Mo.;

grandchildren, Julie Sindlinger and her husband, Mark, of Charles

City; Kevin Saunders, Lakewood, Colo.; Chris Kent and her husband,

Kelly, of Oshkosh, Wis.; Sandra Kirkendall, Portales, N.M.; Jamie

Stephens and his wife, Gretchen, Chillicothe, Mo.; and Nancy

Mitchell and her husband, Pat, of Moline, Ill.; great-grandchildren,

Jessie Sindlinger and Carter Stephens; one sister, Ruth Bergman,

New Hampton; and one brother, Harold Marvel, Roswell, N.M.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jeanette C. VanDenBosch was born on June 1, 1905, in Sioux County,

the daughter of John and Maggie (VerSteeg) Grooters.



She attended rural school near her home.



On Dec. 18, 1925, she was married to Henry VanDenBosch in Boyden.



The couple lived in Boyden until 1939 when they moved to Fertile.

Henry died in 1982.



Jeanette was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church and active

in Circle and as a leader for Youth Group.



She enjoyed gardening, quilting and knitting.



She moved  to the Manly Care Center in 1989.



She is survived by a son and his wife, Wayne and Marilyn VanDenBosch

of Lake Mills; a daughter and her husband, Linda and John Backhaus,

of Manly; a daughter-in-law, Norma VanDenBosch of Ames; a brother,

Larry Grooters of Pella; a sister, Lydia Smit of Redlands, Calif.;

eight grandchildren, Bob, Tom, Mike and Scott VanDenBosch, Brian

and Paul VanDenBosch, and Brent and Kara Backhaus; 12 great-grandchildren;

and several nieces and nephews.



Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,

Henry; a son, Donald; two grandsons, Mark and Bruce VanDenBosch;

three brothers, Bern, Arie and Ray Grooters; and a sister, Marvella

Kooiman.

Clifford Greiman, 67, of Garner, died Monday (Dec. 16, 1996)

at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

officiating. Burial will be in the Peace Reformed Church Cemetery.

Clifford Gary Greiman, the son of Addis Alfred and Ruth Luella

(Schipull) Greiman, was born Jan. 31, 1929, on the farm south

of Garner.



He graduated from Garner High School in 1946.



On Jan. 19, 1947, he married Dona Lou Bethke in Algona.



They farmed south of Garner, specializing in raising purebred

Angus cattle. Cliff was a DeKalb Corn dealer for 20 years.



He enjoyed his family, friends, traveling, hunting and fishing.



He was a member of Peace Reformed Church where he served as

an elder and deacon, the Iowa Angus Association, Beef Producers

Association and had served as a 4-H leader for the Elcon Indians,

as a trustee for Ell Township, a board member of Hancock County

Co-op Oil and had also served on the Hancock County Fair Board.



He is survived by his wife, Dona Lou Greiman of Garner; his

five children, Cherry Brouwer and her husband, James, of Bemidji,

Minn., and their son, Andy; Chris Greiman and his wife, Soo,

of Waterloo and their children, Dustin, Kate and Cassi; Gay Prohaska

and her husband, Mike, of Huxley and their children, Marisa,

Jessa, Clint and Shandra; Cory Greiman and his wife, Florence,

of Garner and their children, Morgan and Zachary; and Kurt Greiman

and his wife, Tina, of Dallas Center; a brother, Don Greiman

and his wife, Yvonne, of Garner; a sister, Shirley Greiman of

West Hartford, Conn.; and three nephews and a niece.



He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Greiman, on Aug.

26, 1985; and his father, Addis Greiman, on March 16, 1993.

Walter Fredrich Hagen, 78, of 701 S. Minnesota, died Monday

(Dec. 16, 1996) at the Good Samaritan Center.

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Doug Hoag and the Rev. Steven

Turner officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the

Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell, with a flag presentation by the

Gallagher Post #208, American Legion.

Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.



Walter Fredrich Hagen was born March 30, 1918, in Rockwell,

a son of Fred and Hazel (Curtis) Hagen.



Walter graduated from Rockwell High School in 1934.



He worked on the farm until entering the United States Army

in March of 1941. He was honorably discharged in September of

1945, then returned to the Mason City area where he worked for

International Harvester.



He was married on May 10, 1947, to Vivian Ione Petersen in Rockwell.



He was a sales manager for International Harvester for several

years, retiring in 1978. The couple moved to Algona in 1955.



Walter was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion

Post #90, Algona, as well as the Salesman Bureau.



Walter enjoyed reading, playing cards and baseball. He coached

Little League for several years and loved to golf. Everyone enjoyed

his sense of humor.



He entered the Good Samaritan Center in March of 1995.



Survivors include his wife, Vivian, of Algona; two sons, Donald

Hagen and his wife, Doris, of Plainfield, Ind., and Gary Hagen

of Iowa City; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth O'Donnell

and her husband, Jim, of Mason City, and Hazel Lou Ellingson

of Mason City.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alvin

Hagen.

She was united in marriage to William Thomas Deegan in 1940

Mary was a homemaker and assisted her husband in farming, until

their retirement.



Survivors include her son, Thomas and his wife, Madeline, of

Riceville; one grandson, William Deegan of Mason City; one sister,

Florence Lewis, and a brother, Roland Priestley, both of Puget

Sound, Wash.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, ``Bill''

on Jan. 19, 1996; a son, Charles Sooter; two brothers, Leonard

and Johans; and two sisters, Shirley and Katy.

Rollie A. ``Pat'' Eggers was born June 19, 1910, the son of

Herman and Lena (Jagua) Eggers near Alden, He attended country

schools near Alden.



He moved to Mason City when he was 16 to work for Jacob E. Decker

& Sons where he worked for 45 years.



He married Dorothy Cook on Feb. 26, 1932, in Mason City.



He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and watching baseball and

football.



He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the

Moose Lodge where he was a life member.



Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Eggers of Mason City; three

sisters, Hilda Wynn of Mason City; Marie Michaelson and her husband,

Harold, of Kanawha, and Leona Comstock of Mason City; one brother,

Walter Eggers of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews

and great nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rollia; a

sister, Mabel Halfpap; and  two brothers, Harley Eggers and Clarence

Clarence was born Jan. 12, 1911, at LuVerne, son of Conrad

and Emma (Tiede) Ristau.



He was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Garner and

attended school at a rural Lutheran school near Garner.



He farmed in the Ventura area for a number of years.



Clarence was married to Bernice Hockenson on Nov. 8, 1939, in

Mason City by the Rev. Hintz.



They moved to a farm near Thornton in 1942 and lived there until

1946 when they moved to California.



They returned to the Rockford area in 1953 and returned to

farming. They moved to Mason City in 1972, when he retired from

farming.



He enjoyed hunting and fishing and his family.



He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a member

of the Aid Association for Lutherans.



Survivors include his wife, Bernice Ristau of Mason City; son,

James Ristau and his wife, Barbara, of Hampton; two daughters,

Rita Zahariades and her husband, Nick, of Mason City, and Diane

Read and her husband, Jim, of Rockford; grandchildren, Keith

Ristau and his wife, Silvana, Dallas, Texas; Marc Ristau, Hampton;

Didi Zahariades, Seattle, Wash.; Sheri Tetter and her husband,

Curt, Charles City; Heather Faulkner and her husband, Jeff, of

Ames, and Derek Read of Rockford; great-grandchildren, Tasha

and Tucker Teeter; a brother, Walter Ristau and his wife, Helen,

Stella Lorena (Hackett) Riley, 94, formerly of Clear Lake,

died Sunday (Dec. 15, 1996) at the Willow Creek Health Care,

Mason City.

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Fred

Lewis of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial

Chapel, with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. by Unity Chapter

#58, Mason City, followed by an Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem

service by Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem Alchor Shrine #6,

Mason City.



The family suggests memorials be given in memory of Stella Riley.



Stella was born March 23, 1902, in Buchanan County, the daughter

of George and Nancy (Hillman) Hackett.



She attended schools in Stanley and graduated from Oelwein High

School and continued her education at Iowa State University,

Ames,  and graduated with a degree in home economics.



Stella taught school for many years in Maynard, Oelwein, Floyd,

and Mason City High School.



Stella married Paul Riley in Waterloo on Sept. 26, 1938, and

they spent the next several years traveling to various locations

when he was in the military service.



In 1946, they built a home on the south shore of Clear Lake,

and spent many years there while and after she taught in Mason

City.



Stella was a life-long member of the Clear Lake United Methodist

Church; a member and past  president of the American Legion Auxiliary,

was a member and past worthy matron of Park Chapter #35 Eastern

Star, Clear Lake, now Unity Chapter #58, Mason City, and a 50

year member of Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem Alchor Shrine

#6, Mason City.



Stella is survived by nieces, Marianne Thomas, Mary Ann Sibley,

Margie Hackett, Nancy Campbell and Mary Stevenson; by nephews,

Bob Hackett, Ray Hackett, Mark Hackett, Bill Hayes, Al Haynes,

Tom McGlamphy; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gert Clark and Mrs.Geneva

Newton; and two brothers-in-law, John Riley and Jake Riley.

William died Tuesday (Dec. 17,1996) at St. John's Lutheran Home

in Albert Lea. He was 94 years old.



William was born March 3, 1902, in Wells, the son of Herman

and Albertina (Seefeldt) Bauers.



He was united in marriage to Irene Laack on May 4, 1937, at

St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Walthum. They  lived most of

their 59 married years on a farm near Twin Lakes.



William had a love for his work horses he used to work the family

farm for many years.



He was a devoted member of his church and attended services

regularly as long as his health allowed.



He is survived by his wife, Irene; two sons, Herman and his

wife, Janice, of Twin Lakes, and Bill and his wife, Kay, of Albert

Lea; three daughters, Grace Branham Woodcox and her husband,

Woody, of Anderson, Ind.; Sharon Bates and her husband, Henry

(Hugh) of Garner, Iowa, and Debra Struck and her husband, Larry,

of Glenville; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law,

Hulda Bauers of Alden, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; one son,

Norman Bauers; son-in-law, Wayne Branham; and grandson, Patrick

Bates.



He loved people and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Melvina R. ``Mickey'' Riekena was born Aug. 20, 1931, the daughter

of Melvin and Marguerite (Young) Letts in Racine, Wis.



At a young age, Mickey moved with her family to Mason City

where she attended school.



She worked as a nurses aide at Park Clinic in Mason City and

later at the Forest City Hospital. Mickey enjoyed raising and

showing Aerdale dogs and doing interior decorating for herself

and her friends.



She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of

Christ.



Survivors include her husband, Kenneth C. Riekena, Mason City;

one daughter, Christine Jo Doss, Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters,

Kelly Christine Doss, Atlanta, Ga., and Jennifer Jo Doss, Atlanta,

Ga.; two nieces, Susan Rice, Lawrence, Mich., and Sally Dost,

St. Collins, Colo.; and one nephew, Matt Dost, Kalamazoo, Mich.

July 12, 1905, on a farm near Wesley.

and later in the Britt schools.



She was united in marriage to Clarence Seefeld on March 24,

1925, at the Britt Methodist Church parsonage.



The couple farmed near Wesley, retiring to Britt in 1961.



Survivors include one daughter, Darlene Ricklefs and her husband,

Vernon, of Titonka; one son, Robert Seefeld of Wesley; six grandchildren;

12 great-grandcxhildren; and one sister, Esta Angle of Swea City.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, in 1974;

two sons, Roland and an infant son, Raymond; and four brothers,

Fred, John, Raymond and Harold.

Wayne Stimson

SHEFFIELD



Wayne Stimson, 86, formerly of Burchinal, died Sunday (Dec.

15, 1996) at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the

Rev. Fred Lewis of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines.



Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral Home.



The family suggests memorials be given to the Wayne Stimson

Memorial Fund.



Wayne was born Aug. 9, 1910, in Malcom, the son of William C.

and Flora (Carpenter) Stimson.



He graduated from Malcom High School in Malcom.



Wayne married Orvilla (Sally) Oatley, on Jan. 11, 1935, in Des

Moines.



They moved to Cerro Gordo County, and lived in Burchinal since

1954 where they owned and operated the Burchinal Store. He also

was the postmaster in Burchinal.



Wayne enjoyed watching and was an avid fan of the Clear Lake

Butter Top fast pitch softball team.



Wayne is survived by his sister, Mrs. Minerva Johnson, Grinnell;

eight nieces and one nephew.

Vera ``Cleo'' Faust, 89, of Kanawha, died Wednesday (Dec. 18,

1996) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United

Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, Britt.



Vera Cleo Faust was born May 7, 1907 at Decatur, Ill.



Survivors include her three children, Dean Faust of Britt; Jean

Ann Paca of Des Moines; and Don Faust of Kanawha; 11 grandchildren;

14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eleanor Hepperly of Clear

Lake.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters

and one brother.

(Dec. 17, 1996) at the Salsbury Baptist Home.

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. David Craig of

Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m.

in the Rock Grove Cemetery, rural Nora Springs.



Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral

home and one hour prior to services on Saturday.



Clara Ruth Baker was born Oct. 24, 1909, in rural Rockford.



Survivors include three daughters, Marjorie Hibner of Keithsburg,

Ill., Carolyn Stanbrough of Hawkeye, and Jean Schwarzhoff of

Charles City; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three

great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Norris of

LaCrosse, Wis.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter,

an infant son, two brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

Betty Funk was born Oct. 26, 1925, near Monona in Allamakee

County.

Ferry, and JoAnn Benesh, Cedar Rapids; one brother, Harlan Bentien

of Monona; and three grandchildren.
