Mabel E. Peterson, 95, died Friday (Aug. 23, 1996) at the Lake

Mills Care Center.



Please note, funeral services have been changed to 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bill Peters

officiating.  Burial will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral

Home, and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.



Mabel Evelyn Peterson was born Nov. 25, 1900 in Worth County.



Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz.,

and Arlo Peterson of Holyoke, Minn.; two step-grandchildren;

and six step-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

one sister, and one brother.

Carroll A. Potter, 91, died Friday (Aug. 23, 1996) at the Westview

Care Center in Britt.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First

United Methodist Church with the Rev. Philip J. Webb officiating.

Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-

Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.



Carroll Andrew Potter was born July 14, 1905 in Cresco Township,

near Algona.



Survivors include his wife, Viola of Algona; one son, Kenneth

Potter of Anoka, Minn.; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.



He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

HAYDEN, Colo. 



Molly (Mary Anne) Tomke, 49, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday

(Aug. 22, 1996) at her home.



A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at

Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with

the Rev. Raymond A. Burkle officiating.  Burial will be in Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral

Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with a scripture

wake service at 7 p.m.



The family suggests memorials to Northwest Colorado Hospice,

Steamboat Springs, Colo.



Molly was born July 22, 1947 at Grinnell, the daughter of John

and Olive (Beaving) Whalen.  She graduated from Newman Catholic

High School and the University of Iowa, and received her master's

degree from Mankato State.  She was married to Craig Tomke on

July 15, 1967 at Holy Family Catholic Church here in Mason City.

They moved to Colorado in 1992.



She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Craig, Colo.



Former Mason City memberships and activities include: Holy Family

Catholic Church where she served on the Parish Council; served

on Central Catholic School Board; taught religious education

for 12 years to 7th and 8th graders; was active in Mason City

Women's Club, Panhellenic, and Athenian Study Club; was in charge

of PR for Red Cross blood drives; past vice-president of city

wide PTA; member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority of the University

of Iowa; and coached girls softball.



Survivors include her husband, Craig Tomke of Hayden, Colo.;

daughters, Valerie Boehlje and her husband, Chad, of Pella, and

Kathleen Krumm and her husband, Michael, of Denver, Colo.; and

many friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Olive Whalen.

Minnie Baker, 100, formerly of Britt, died Saturday (Aug. 24,

1996) at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.



Graveside services and burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday

at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt with the Rev. Dennis Bailey of

the United Methodist Church as officiant.



Memorials may be given in her name to the United Methodist Church

in Britt.



There will be no visitation.  Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt

is in charge of arrangements.



Minnie Marie Baker was born July 24, 1896 in Blue Earth, Minn.



Survivors include four children, Lowell R. Baker of Austin,

Minn., Rev. Dale Baker of Pacific Grove, Calif., Gaila Kauffman

of Vacaville, Calif., and Dr. Eldon Baker of Sequim, Wash.; 13

grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one sister,

Eunice Sommers of Temple, Texas.



She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant granddaughter,

her parents, and two sisters.

Malinda Berninghaus, 84, died Saturday (Aug. 24, 1996) at the

Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Algona.

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lyle Hansen officiating.  Burial

will be in St. Paul Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-

Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home.



Malinda Berninghaus was born on May 20, 1912, near Lotts Creek.



Survivors include two children, Edward Berninghaus and Betty

Berninghaus, both of Whittemore; four sisters, Martha Bierstedt

of Algona, Mathilda Thompson of Ankeny, Elna Hanover of Algona,

and Esther Steier of Whittemore; two brothers, Fred Ruhnke of

Fort Dodge, and Ervin Ruhnke of Algona.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother.

Sadie May Pannhoff, 91, died Saturday (Aug. 24, 1996) at the

Rockwell Community Nursing Home.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ernest Thompson officiating. Interment

will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason

City.



Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. today at the church. Fullerton

Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider

memorials to the Sadie Pannhoff memorial fund.



Sadie was born on July 2, 1905, in Dougherty, the daughter of

Sam and Florence Woodsidd Wray. She attended school in Lake Mills.

On Oct. 21, 1922, she was united in marriage to Charles L. Warner

in Lake Mills. They lived in several communities until his death

in 1931. During her lifetime, she worked as a sales clerk for

numerous retail companies. In November of 1949, she was married

to Casper ``Cap'' Pannhoff in Garner. They made their home in

Miller for many years. Following Cap's death in 1974, she moved

to Rockwell and has lived there ever since. She was a member

of St. Peter Lutheran Church and enjoyed her flower and vegetable

garden, as well as knitting and crocheting.



Sadie is survived by her daughter, Gloria Pitzenberger, Swaledale;

one son, Charles, and his wife, Joan Warner, Vance, S.C.; two

step-daughters; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and

23 great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two

daughters, Mary Ellen Gauley, and an infant, Doris May Warner;

two sisters, Lee Wickwire and Alta Hanawalt; and one brother,

James Wray.

Louis T. Kofoed, 75, of 208 N. 10th St., died Saturday (Aug.

24, 1996) at his home.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion

Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen

officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery where military

honors will be conducted by the Clear Lake VFW.



Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to the

services at the church on Tuesday.



Louis T. Kofoed was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Thornton, the son

of Thor and Alma (Johanson) Kofoed. He married Teresa Raggio

on Jan. 10, 1945, in Chicago, Ill.



Louis grew up in Thornton and graduated from Clear Lake High

School. He served in the Navy during World War II. Louis was

assistant postmaster at the Clear Lake Post Office for many years

until retiring in 1976. He then worked at the Clear Lake Liquor

Store for seven years. He loved to fish and making fishing lures.

He enjoyed wood working.



He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a charter and lifetime

member of the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign War Post #4868.



Survivors include his wife, Teresa ``Terry'' Kofoed, Clear Lake;

one daughter, Donna Johnson and her husband, Mike, Mason City;

two sons, David Kofoed and his wife, Kay, of Cedar Falls, and

Dennis Kofoed, Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Doug

Clark, Richfield, Minn., Jason Clark, Lombard, Ill., Scott Clark,

Cottage Grove, Minn., Eric, Sean and Lindsay Johnson, all of

Mason City, and Katie Kofoed, Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-

grandchildren;  one brother, Clarence Kofoed and his wife, Norma,

Clear Lake; two sisters, Lilly Hendrickson, Rockwell, and Clara

Peterson and her husband, Warren, Mason City; and several nieces

and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister in infancy.

Burdette E. Nelson Norton Umbarger, 88, of 104 Fairway Circle,

died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center

East in Mason City.



Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the First

Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Dr. S.W., Mason City, with

the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating.



There is no visitation. The body will be cremated. Major Erickson

Burdette E. Nelson Norton Umbarger was born April 3, 1908, in

Odebolt, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Butterfield)

Nelson.



She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (U.N.I.) in 1929

and received her Masters Degree from Omaha University. Burdette

taught school at Milford and Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a short

period of time then spent the majority of her teaching career

in Omaha.



Burdette married Frank A. Umbarger May 30, 1981, in Omaha. They

have resided in Garner since 1984.



Burdette was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 68 years,

Phi Delta Gamma Educational Sorority and the Presbyterian Church.

For three years, she was coordinator of ``55 Alive'' for the

state of Nebraska.



Burdette taught calligraphy at NIACC and enjoyed gardening,

golfing, bridge, bowling, attending athletic events, and her

friends.



Survivors include her husband, Frank A. Umbarger of Garner;

daughter, Kay Severson and her husband, Rich, of Sarasota, Fla.;

stepsons, Duane Umbarger and his wife, Ruth, of Mason City, and

Bob Umbarger and his wife, Donna, of Mason City; daughter-in-law,

Margaret Norton of Plattsmouth, Neb.; grandchildren, Julee Jones

and husband, Vic Scoggin of Nashville, Tenn., Janna Jones of

Tampa Fla., Michael Norton and wife, Karen, of Piney Point, Md.,

Viola Laura Whipple was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Alden.

daughter, Lori Piotrowski of Coulter; two sisters, Ethel Shane

of South Dakota, and Louise Roberts of Iowa Falls; two brothers,

12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

(Aug. 20, 1996) at Hilo Medical Center of a heart attack.

Phyllis Jones Schaumburg was born Aug. 24, 1927, in Mason City,

She was a retired transporter for a paper manufacturing company.

Ore.; her stepmother, Estelle Jones, Mason City, Iowa, and a

sister, Ruth Ann Jones Bregante, San Mateo, Calif.

Darrell Blaine Sanford was born May 3, 1905, in rural Nora Springs,

the son of Charles Virdin and Marion Elizabeth (Stuart) Sanford.



He was married to Gertrude Tibbits on Nov. 3, 1928, at Albert

Lea, Minn. Darrell lived all of his life in the Nora Springs

area.



He was a self-employed carpenter.



He loved to read, travel and work in the garden.



He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Nora Springs.



Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Muskovich, of Nora

Springs; four grandchildren, Mary Schissel and her husband, Ron,

of Dougherty; Michelle Stiles and her husband, Bill, of Modjeska,

Calif.; Marcia Brightman and her husband, Bob, of Jacksonville,

Fla., and James Muskovich and his wife, Julie, of Green Valley,

Calif.; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren;

one brother, Dale Sanford of Nora Springs; and many nieces and

nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one son-in-law,

Mike Muskovich.

25, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Ronald Stein

of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial

Park Cemetery.

chapel and will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday until service

time.



Bobbie G. Beisel was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Mason City, son

of Daniel and Marguerite (Campbell) Beisel.



Bobbie graduated from Mason City High School in 1956 and then

attended Hamilton Business College.



He enjoyed sports and stock car racing.



Survivors include his mother, Marguerite Beisel, of Mason City;

one sister, Betty Wolff and her husband, Robert, of Mason City;

one aunt; one uncle; and numerous cousins.



He was preceded in death by his father, and one nephew, Roger

Wolff.

illness.

31, 1996, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E.,

with the Rev. David Anderson officiating.

He was baptized June 1, 1930, into the Methodist Church.



He married Margaret Dunbar on Aug. 2, 1947, in Des Moines.



He was an employee of Interstate Power for 35 years, retiring

in 1984.



He served in both the United States Navy and the Marine Corps.



He was an avid gun collector, traveling to many gun shows throughout

the Midwest with a special interest in Daisy B-B guns and memorabilia.

He was a member of the Central States Gun Club, a life member

and founder of the River City Rifle and Pistol Club, and a life

member of the NRA, teaching gun safety for more than 30 years.

He was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 1 of Grant School and served

as Boy Scout commissioner.



He is survived by his wife, Margaret Dunbar, Farmington, Ark.;

five children, Lois and her husband, Gene Schwade, of Mason City;

Sherry Wallis of Farmington, Ark.; Debra Severson of Mason City;

Chuck and his wife, Darla, of Osage; Mike and his wife, Vickie,

of Clear Lake; a sister, Lois and her husband, Harry Hockenson,

of Plymouth; two brothers, Ted Moon, of Durango, Colo., and Bob

and his wife, Elizabeth Moon, of Seattle, Wash.; 11 grandchildren,

Justin Schwade of Iowa City; Jessica Schwade, of Cedar Falls;

Drew Wallis of Farmington; Heather and Travis Severson of Mason

City; Brandon Moon of Latimer; Ashley and Matt Moon of Osage;

Sarah, Brian and Nick Moon of Clear Lake; a special nephew, Gene

Hockenson, of Belvidere, Ill., and many more special nieces and

nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lou Hedrick;

and a granddaughter, Krysta Moon.

Mary Jane Loomer, 81, of Lexington, Neb., died Sunday (Aug.

25, 1996) at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad, Neb.



Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian

Church, Lexington, with the Rev. Tom Reynolds officating. Interment

will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lexington.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday

at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home, Lexington.



Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church-Music Department.



Mary Jane was born Jan. 1, 1915, at Waterloo, Iowa, to Chalmer

and Opal (Goldsberry) Brown.



Mary Jane graduated from Mason City High School at Mason City,

Iowa, with the class of 1932.



On Sept. 17, 1941, she married Winston Loomer at Bethany, Mo.,

and four children were born to this union.



Mary Jane owned and operated the Correll Filling Station in

Mason City, Iowa, with her sisters, thus the slogan ``The Correll

Girls'' derived from the customers.



She also traveled with the Cimiotti Equestrian Horse Shows at

Mason City, Iowa, as an equestrian rider.



During World War II, while Winston was in the service, she worked

in the Officers PX at Fort Sill, Okla., then at Fort Knox in

Louisville, Ky., for L & N Railroad as chief clerk in the claims

department.



In Cozad, she worked with her father in Flynn's Clothing Store

and clerked for KN Energy Company. In Lexington, she worked part

time at Holen's Floral.



Mary Jane was a member and active with church organizations,

playing organ and piano for more than 40 years at First Christian

Church in Lexington.



She enjoyed gardening, music, camping and traveling as hobbies.

Mary Jane was also very active with PTA during the children's

school years.



Survivors include her husband, Winston, of Lexington, Neb.;

one daughter, Marilyn Hemphill and her husband, Jerry, of Cozad,

Neb.; two sons, Frank Loomer and his wife, Karen, of Columbus,

Neb., and Paul Loomer of Broken Bow, Neb.; two sisters, Ruth

Anderson of Manly, Iowa, and Harriet Hendrickson of Lexington,

Neb.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Jamie;

two brothers, Marion and Theodore; and one great-granddaughter,

Allison.

26, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Herb Shafer of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial

L. Dale Birch was born Nov. 7, 1912, in Mason City, the son

of Sidney and Edith (Lester) Birch.



Dale attended Mason City schools and married Dorothy Ashlock

on Nov. 12, 1931, at the Grace Evangelical Church in Mason City.



Dale worked for 39 years at Northwestern States Portland Cement

Company and retired in 1972.



Dale enjoyed bowling, golfing and traveling.



He served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during

World War II from 1943-1945.



He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the VFW

and the Moose Lodge.



He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Birch, of Mason City; one

daughter, Deloris Kittleson and husband, Nels, of Mason City;

one son, Gary Birch and his wife, Joyce, of Garner; two grandsons,

Brad Kittleson and his wife, Deb, of Mason City, and Bruce Kittleson

and his wife, Michele, of Osage; six great-grandchildren, Rosalie,

Cody, Travis, Jonathon, Meagan and Jake; and four sisters, Annette

Haddy of Mason City; Flossie Lorentzen and her husband, LeRoy,

of Mason City; Phyllis McDermott, of Atlanta, Ga., and Betty

White and husband, Frank, of Vancouver, Wash.

illness.

Geraldine A. Jarvill was born Jan. 1, 1933, the first child

of that year born in Winnebago County, the daughter of Ted and

Fanna (Hippen) Albers. She attended and graduated from Buffalo

Center High School in 1950 and Central College in 1953.



Geraldine married James M. Jarvill on Oct. 9, 1955, in Buffalo

Center.



She taught school at Estherville for four years and also taught

in Mason City.



In 1977, Geraldine began working for Charlie Brown Day Care

where she served as assistant director. That same year, she also

became involved with the child-care food program where she currently

served as coordinator.



Geraldine enjoyed working with the children, genealogy and spending

time with her grandchildren.



She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she

served as a Deacon and F.A.D.A.C.A.



Survivors include her husband, James M. Jarvill, of Mason City;

daughter, Janna K. Wuttke and her husband, Bruce, of Mason City;

sons, David J. Jarvill and his wife, Katie, of Charles City,

and Thomas E. Jarvill of Mason City; five grandchildren, Andrew

and Amanda Wuttke, Keely, Sam and Will Jarvill; her father, Ted

Albers of Buffalo Center; sister, Delores Nelson and her husband,

Walter, of Menlo Park, Calif.; brother, Darrell Albers and his

Inga D. Swensrud, 87, died peacefully in her rural Northwood

home Monday (Aug. 26, 1996).



Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 1996,

at First Lutheran Church in Northwood with the Rev. Mark F. Bents

officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.



Friends may call from 6:30 until 8 p.m. today with a public

Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. by the Northern Light Eastern

Star Chapter 262 of Northwood at the Conner Colonial Chapel,

99-11th St. South, Northwood, and one hour prior to service time

at the church on Thursday.



Inga Daninah Huus, daughter of Ole H. and Anna Marie (Nystuen)

Huus, was born on April 5, 1909, in Silver Lake Township, Worth

County, Iowa.



She was baptized into the Lutheran faith May 2, 1909, by the

Rev. A.J. Torgerson and reaffirmed her faith through her confirmation

on May 13, 1923, by the Rev. C.B. Ylvisaker.



She graduated in 1927 from Northwood High School and from Hamilton's

Business College.



On Jan. 17, 1932, she married Walter A. Sandberg of Lake Mills

at her parents' home in Northwood. They lived in Breckenridge,

Minn., a few years before moving back to Northwood. They were

the parents of four children, Dean, Diana, Dale and Ann Marie.

Walt died Jan. 14, 1940.



Inga married Alfred E. Swensrud of rural Northwood on Aug. 7,

1943, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were married

for nearly 49 years and lived on their farm in Grove Township

all of their married lives. Alfred died July 16, 1992.



Inga enjoyed working in her church and community, serving as

a Sunday school teacher and active circle member. She held several

offices in the First Lutheran Ladies Aid including chairman in

1964. She was a 4-H leader, a member of Farm Bureau Women, a

life member of the Worth County Historical Society and 50 year

member of the Northern Light Chapter OES #262 of Northwood, in

which she also held many offices including Worthy Matron. She

was a charter member of the Green Thumb Garden Club and was honored

last year by the club with a life membership recognizing her

``numerous contributions and outstanding artistic talent as a

member of the club from 1958-1994.'' She also was named a life

member of the National Council of State Garden Club.



She found great joy in gardening and flower arranging. Other

hobbies and interests included traveling with Alfred, stamp collecting,

coin collecting and playing bridge.



She was a lover of nature and possessed a special awareness

of its beauty.



Besides Walt and Alfred, she was preceded in death by two children,

Dean A. Sandberg on Nov. 19, 1966, and Diana Marie Sandberg,

who died in infancy; a grandson, Timothy Swensrud Sandberg on

Jan. 1, 1963; her brother, Ernest L. ``Ike'' Huus; and three

sisters, Olga M. Huus, Cora A. Petersen and Palma J. Christiansen.



Surviving are her son, Dale W. Sandberg and his wife, Liz, of

Phoenix, Ariz., and her daughter, Ann Marie Johnson and husband,

Dale, of rural Northwood; grandchildren and great-grandchildren,

Capt. Peter R. and Dyane Sandberg, Kyle, Ally and Sara of West

Point, N.Y., Tobie Sandberg and San Dilettaso, Sam and Nick Sandberg

Dilettaso of Phoenix, Ariz., Pieper and Dave Brunsvold and Jackson

of Riverside, Tanna and Dean Moretz, Nathan and Mitchell of Hanlontown,

Tom and Marianne Sandberg, Dan and Steven of Manchester and David

Sandberg and family of Missouri  and a daughter-in-law, Bonnie

Sandberg Hengesteg of rural Northwood. Also surviving are two

sisters, Hannah Watkins of Chevy Chase, Md., and Evelyn Steele

of Mahtomedi, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Isabelle M. Swensrud

of Naples, Fla., and Amy Swensrud of Galesburg, Ill., as well

as several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Margaret Balek was born May 6, 1915, in Arlington, daughter

Balek on Aug. 12, 1933.



Dorothy grew up in the Mason City area. She and her husband

lived in Los Angeles, Calif., for 27 years where she worked at

American Bakery until retiring and moving back to Mason City.

She enjoyed dancing and her trips to Spillville and visiting

with relatives.



Survivors include her husband, Joseph Balek, Mason City; one

son, Joseph Eugene Balek, Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren,

Karen Elaine, Joseph Michael, David Alan and Christina Marie;

and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth Arlene (Lein) Ersland, the daughter of Oscar O. and Alice

A. (Ellingsen) Lein, was born on Tuesday, March 26, 1918.



She was united in marriage to Richard Lynn Ersland and to this

union, five children were born.



Ruth was a member of Gol Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, Goodhue

Extension Organization and a Kenyon exercise group. Over the

years, she provided respite care for friends and families, assisted

with donations to the Marie Sandvig Shelter in Minneapolis and

most recently began making quilts for children staying at the

Ronald McDonald House in the Twin Cities.



She was active in her church and community and enjoyed making

trips to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She and Richard enjoyed their flowers and gardening.



Ruth was ``Grandma'' to any child who stopped for a cookie,

a listening ear, or perhaps a special hug. When asked, she would

assist at the elementary school for reading programs or attend

a ``special day'' activity as a substitute grandmother.



Ruth's memory will be cherished by her husband, Richard; sons,

Gary Ersland and his wife, Meredith, of Belmond; and Larry Ersland

and his wife, Janice, of Belmond; daughters, Roberta Kraling

and Larry McBain of Belmond; and Rebecca Ersland and Tom Aeiling

of Winona, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Beverly Hogy and her husband,

Bruce, of Morristown, Minn.; grandchildren, Michelle Dorr, Gregory

Lois married Jackson White on Dec. 10, 1955, at Wesley United

Methodist Church, Mason City. They resided in Mason City.



Lois loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing in Canada

and spending time on the river near Red Wing, Minn. She collected

antiques and loved to cook and play Scrabble. She was a member

of Wesley United Methodist Church.



Survivors include her husband, Jack White, Mason City; two daughters,

Diane ``Dee'' Pollock and her husband, Tim, Sterling, Va., and

Debra ``Debbie'' Gill and her husband, Jeff, Spring, Texas; one

son, John White and his wife, Mary, Mason City; seven grandchildren,

Ryan Wise, and Kristin and Michael Pollock, all of Sterling,

Joel M. Picker, 64, a longtime North Iowa Area Community College

instructor of sociology, died Tuesday (Aug. 27, 1996) at Good

Shepherd Nursing Home where he was a resident.



There will be no memorial services planned at this time. He

donated his body to science at the University of Iowa.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make donations

to the Joel Picker Social Science Scholarship. This scholarship

is available to a social science major at NIACC who plans on

transferring to a four year school.

Joel was born on June 1, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., the son of

Nathan and Minnie (Tabin) Picker.



His college education spanned from earning his Bachelor of Arts

from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., in 1954 and his Masters

from Manchester University in England in 1957.



He taught at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., from 1961-1965

and then at North Iowa Area Community College from 1965 until

his retirement in 1994.



He was active in the Unitarian Church and received the Honors

Award from the Cerro Gordo County Democrats because of his longtime

participation in Democratic politics on the state and national levels.

young child.



Josephine attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason

City High School in 1934.



She married Vernon Dahl on Nov. 7, 1936, in Mason City.



Josephine worked for several years as a secretary for the North

Iowa Dental Lab.



She had resided in Minneapolis for the last six years with her

daughter.



She was a member of Calvary Alliance Church.



Survivors include one daughter, Jan Littlefield and her husband,

Don, of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; two grandsons, Brett Littlefield

and his wife, Jill, of Lino Lake, Minn., and Travis Littlefield,

Bethel College, St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Elmer Billick and

his wife, Carline, of Mason City; three sisters, Hazel Bea Billick

of Mason City; Mary Lou Tully and her husband, Lee, of Santa

Ana, Calif., and Donna Jean Waters, Garden Grove, Calif.; and

several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon, in

Glenn was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Eubank, Ky., son of Lawrence

F. and Minnie B. (Ware) Brown. The family lived in Indiana and

Kentucky, before moving to Rock Falls in 1931. He graduated from

Rock Falls High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World

War II, receiving battle stars for Southern Philippines Liberation,

Western Pacific China Offensive and served on Leyte Island.



Glen was married on Nov. 15, 1947, to Shirley E. Weida, in Mason

City.



He worked as a production manager for Agri-Industries for 29

years, retiring Dec. 1, 1983.



Glenn was an avid baseball player and fan. He was a pitcher

and played for many North Iowa Independent baseball teams in

the 1950s. He closely followed football and was an especially

ardent fan of the Minnesota Vikings.



For 14 years, he was manager and umpire for Knights of Columbus

Baseball League.



Some highlights he looked forward to were family gatherings

at their cabin near Sauk Centre, Minn., and the annual family

vacation on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.



He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifetime

member of the VFW and a 30 year member of the American Legion.



He is survived by his wife, Shirley E. Brown of Mason City;

daughters, Cheryl E. Hafften and special friend, David Bernard,

Mounds View, Minn., and Chereen K. Norstrud and husband, David,

of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; sons, James G. Brown and his wife,

Bobby, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Jerry L. Brown and his wife, Diane,

of Golden Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Vanessa and Chelsea Brown,

Lainie Norstrud, Kayla Gabbert, Stephanie, Kendall and Jessica

Brown; sisters, Velma Collier, of Williamstown, Ky., Wilma Wegener,

Mason City, and Wanda Peter and her husband, Vernon, of Nora

Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Lawrence

and James.

of the American Flag by the Severson Post #77 and Kanawha American

Legion.

Mr. Kirsch was baptized and confirmed at Waterloo, Iowa. He

graduated from Sioux City, Iowa, High School in 1940, and attended

Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He joined the Army Air Corps

on July 8, 1942, and was discharged in 1945.



On Nov. 4, 1967, Mr. Kirsch married Arlene M. Engh at Waterloo,

Iowa.



They lived in Waterloo and Iowa Falls, where Mr. Kirsch was

a radio announcer and Realtor.



In 1972, they moved to Elgin, Ill., where he was employed as

a school custodian for 15 years. In 1987, he retired, and he

and his wife moved to Brookings. She died in 1988.



Mr. Kirsch was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and active

in the Bible study group.



He enjoyed gardening, fishing, shooting pool and spending time

with his grandchildren.



Survivors include a stepson, Dennis Engh and his wife, Connie,

of Las Vegas, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Diane Anderson and her husband,

Lynn, of Brookings, S.D.; four stepgrandchildren, Brooke and

Tyler Anderson and Erik and Matthew Engh; a brother, Paul Kirsch

of Waterloo, Iowa; his sisters-in-law, Audrey Friedow of Madison,

S.D.; Dolores (Gordon) Severson of Luther, Iowa; Kathy (Robert)

She was raised in Rockford and graduated from Rockford Senior

High School  in 1978.



She received a Registered Nurse Degree from Allen Memorial Hospital

Lutheran School of Nursing in Waterloo in 1981 and a Bachelor

of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 1988.



She was a registered nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo,

from 1980-1982; Oklahoma Memorial Hospital, Oklahoma City, Okla.,

from 1982-1983; and the Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Hospital,

Iowa City, from 1983-1992, before retiring because of disability.



She was a member of the American Association of Critical Care

nurses, and was the publicity chairperson of the Eastern Iowa chapter.



Survivors include her beloved companion, Kimberly Sue Meyerhoff

of Coralville; her parents, Ronald and Margaret Squier of Rockford;

one sister, Marcia Squier of Ankeny; one niece, Danielle Tegtmeier

of Ankeny; and a special friend, Sylvia Sinclair of Dallas, Texas.

Dorothy Margaret Balek was born May 6, 1915, in Arlington, daughter

of Leon and Rose Ella (Hamlett) Hamlin. She married Joseph James

Balek on Aug. 12, 1933.



Dorothy grew up in the Mason City area. She and her husband

lived in Los Angeles, Calif., for 27 years where she worked at

American Bakery until retiring and moving back to Mason City.

She enjoyed dancing and her trips to Spillville and visiting

with relatives.



Survivors include her husband, Joseph Balek, Mason City; one

son, Joseph Eugene Balek, Chesapeake, Va.; two stepbrothers,

Donald Hamlin, Mason City, and Dean Hamlin, Huntington Beach,

Calif.; four grandchildren, Karen Elaine, Joseph Michael, David

Alan and Christina Marie; and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kenneth Joseph

Balek; four brothers, Art, Clarence, Clifford and Francis Wade;

Joel M. Picker, 64, a longtime North Iowa Area Community College

instructor of sociology, died Tuesday (Aug. 27, 1996) at Good

Shepherd Nursing Home where he was a resident.



There will be no memorial services planned at this time. He

donated his body to science at the University of Iowa.



Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make donations

to the Joel Picker Social Science Scholarship. This scholarship

is available to a social science major at NIACC who plans on

transferring to a four year school.

Joel was born on June 1, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., the son of

Nathan and Minnie (Tabin) Picker.



His college education spanned from earning his Bachelor of Arts

from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., in 1954 and his Masters

from Manchester University in England in 1957.



He taught at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., from 1961-1965

and then at North Iowa Area Community College from 1965 until

his retirement in 1994.



He was active in the Unitarian Church and received the Honors

Award from the Cerro Gordo County Democrats because of his longtime

participation in Democratic politics on the state and national levels.

Eva A. Shepherd, 89, of 805 17th St. N.E.,  died Thursday (Aug.

29, 1996) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Mark Luckiesh

of the Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating. Burial will

be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at  Major Erickson

Home.



Eva was born in Mason City, on June 16, 1907,  to Mr. and Mrs.

Edward Martin. She attended Mason City schools.



Eva was married to Ralph Shepherd at Des Moines by the head

of the General Adventist Conference.



She enjoyed bridge, sewing and visiting with friends and family.



Survivors include her husband, Ralph S. Shepherd, of Mason City;

stepson, Ralph Shepherd Jr. and his wife, Mildred, of Oklahoma

City, Okla.; three stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren;

brother, Les Martin and his  wife, Ann, of Hot Springs, Ark.;

a brother-in-law, Jack Gilbert, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and several

nephews and nieces.



She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Vivian

Gilbert, who died a few months ago.

Thelma Hayungs

GARNER



Thelma Hayungs, 79, of Garner, died Friday (Aug. 30, 1996)

at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul

Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating.

Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St.



Thelma Mae Hayungs, the daughter of Harrison and Gertrude (Castle)

Ackley, was born May 27, 1917, at Marble Rock.



She attended school at Marble Rock, graduating in 1935.



On Oct. 3, 1936, she was married to Claus Hayungs at Charles

City.



They farmed in the Floyd, Butler and Hancock County areas, until

1956, when they moved into Garner.



Thelma worked at Denny's Cafe, Lambert Meyer's Turkey Farm,

the Garner Locker, Hancock County Courthouse and Annex, and also

operated the Grill Cafe.



She enjoyed her family, friends, crocheting, gardening and especially

golfing.



She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L., Knitting

Club and the Ladies Golf Club Association.



She is survived by her children, Ernist Hayungs and his wife,

Ione, of Clear Lake; Larry Hayungs and his wife, Emilie, of Carterville,

Ill.; Roger Hayungs and his wife, Mary, of Rolfe, and Donna Sonquist

of Harlingen, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Donnitta Hayungs of Garner;

18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur

Ackley and his wife, Mona, of New Hampton; Roger Ackley and his

wife, Marie, of Chillicothe, Ill., and Kenneth Ackley and his

wife, Mickie, of Dubuque; and three sisters, Margaret Hurd and

her husband, Lester, of Nashua; Henrietta Meek and her husband,

Wayne, of Greene, and Beverly Woods and her husband, Richard,

of Portland, Ore.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Claus Hayungs, July

31, 1982; a son, Robert T. Hayungs, June 26, 1991; a grandson,

Nick Perkins, Nov. 17, 1986; her parents; and two sisters, Irma

Snavely and Wilma Marion.

Mona Jean Kaiser

BELMOND 



Mona Jean Kaiser, 72, of Belmond, died Thursday (Aug. 29, 1996)

at her home in the company of family.



A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday

at St. Francis Xavier Church, with Father Jack Paisley and Deacon

Nick Schmit officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Francis Cemetery

with private family services.



Mona Jean (Caron) Kaiser, the daughter of Levi and Blanch (Gregoire)

Caron, was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Green Valley, Minn.



She was united in marriage to Joseph H. Kaiser on June 10, 1947,

in Green Valley, Minn., and they farmed for 40 years in the Fulda,

Minn., area. They moved from the farm to Belmondin September

of 1993.



Mona worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Maple Lawn

Nursing Home for 25 years, and also with Hospice.



She enjoyed fishing, loved spending time cooking, and enjoyed

her children, grandchildren and her friends.



She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, Catholic Daughters

of the Americas, Rosary Society and member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.



Survivors include her husband, Joe, of Belmond; daughters, the

Rev. Carol Kaiser of Des Moines; Mary Ann Lohse and her husband,

Larry, of Belmond, and Joyce David of Slayton, Minn.; sons, Donald

Kaiser and his wife, Patricia, of No. Mankato, Minn., and the

Rev. Richard Kaiser and his wife, Beth, of Des Moines; grandchildren,

JoAnn Lohse, Heidi and Heather Kaiser, Joshua and Jonathan Kaiser

and Marty Davis; brothers, Leroy Caron of Perham, Minn.; Merlyn

Caron of Tracy, Minn., and Harold Caron of Edina, Minn.; and

sisters, Donna Boerboom of Marshall, Minn.; Yvonne Tillemans

of Marshall, Minn., and Mary Jo Szarzynski of Edina, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Louis.

Ruth C. Skellenger, 80, of Lake Mills, died Thursday (Aug.

29, 1996) at Trinity Regional Hospital, Fort Dodge.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Asbury

United Methodist Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Jeanne Martin

and the Rev. Paul McKinley officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside

Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Ruth C. Skellenger was born May 9, 1916, near Lake Mills.



Survivors include her husband, Leo, of Lake Mills; three sons,

Duane Skellenger of Lake Mills; William Skellenger of Lake Mills,

and Donald Skellenger of Lakeland, Fla.; three daughters, Leona

Yokom of Adelanto, Calif.; Margaret Bowman of Cabo San Lucas,

Mexico, and Virginia Kuhfus of Greenfield; 14 grandchildren;

and  15 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Tillie Wohler

CLEAR LAKE 



Tillie Wohler, 99, of 602 N. Third St., Clear Lake, died Friday

(Aug. 30, 1996) at the Sheffield Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran

Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean C. Hess officiating. Burial

will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Pleasantview Cemetery, Thornton.



Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Grarup Funeral

Home, Thornton.



Tillie Wohler was born on April 25, 1897, on the family farm

near Thornton, the daughter of Soren and Matilda (Raun) Bertelsen.



She attended country school before graduating from Thornton

High School.



Following school, she taught school for a short time before

keeping house for her brothers.



On March 9, 1923, he was united in marriage to Peter M. Wohler

in the Trinity Lutheran parsonage in Mason City.



They made their home on a farm southwest of Thornton until his

death on June 23, 1944.



She moved to Clear Lake where she lived until 1989 when she

entered the Sheffield Care Center.



Tillie was actively involved in Zion Lutheran Church where she

was a member and taught Sunday school for many years.



She was also involved with the Girl Scouts serving as a leader

and other various positions.



In her free time, she enjoyed playing golf and going bowling.



She is survived by one sister-in-law, Marguerite Bertelsen of

Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers

and five sisters.

Clara Gorham

TACOMA, Wash. 



Clara Gorham, 85, a longtime Tacoma resident, went to be with

her Lord on Thursday (Aug. 29, 1996) following a long term illness.



Born in Rockwell, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1910, she spent most of her

life in Mason City, Iowa, where she worked for Bordens Ice Cream

Company. She retired from Bordens in 1973 and moved to Tacoma.



She leaves a son, Edward Gorham (Betty) of Tacoma, Wash.; daughters,

Shirley Sterns (Verl) of Springfield, Ore.; Mary Barfield (Marvin)

of Des Moines,  Iowa,  and Barbara Danielsen (Don) of Steilacoom,

Wash.; one sister, Eleanore Gerdes of Chicago, Ill.; 14 grandchildren;

21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.



Private family graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m.

Saturday at Mountain View Memorial Park. Arrangements by Mountain

View Funeral Home, Tacoma.
