Bernice Weidner, 87, of Forest City, died Monday (Aug. 19,
1996) at the Lake Mills Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James
Catholic Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, is in charge of services.
Bernice Weidner was born Nov. 12, 1909, in Sheldon.
Survivors include one son, Bill Weidner of Austin, Minn.; four
grandchildren; three sisters, LaVaughn Harms of Ankeny; Dorothy
Vandenberg of Mitchell, S.D., and Bette Gardner of Sibley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers
and one sister.

of Mason City; three sisters, Irene Cook of Clear Lake; Bernedetta
Brackey of Northwood, and Louise Hanson of LeRoy, Minn.; one
brother, Ed Etzen of Forest City; eight grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, 84 Beaumont Drive.

Chris was born Feb. 27, 1949, in Antwerp, Belgium, the daughter
of Albert and Marie Fissers.
She came to the United States in 1957 and became a U.S. citizen
in 1968. Her family originally settled in Connecticut and then
moved to Malibu, Calif. She graduated from the University of
Hartford.
Chris married Timothy S. Coffey on Dec. 24, 1983, in McLean,
Va.
She held various administrative secretarial positions in Rockford,
Ill., before relocating with her husband to Mason City in January
of 1996.
She recently was a team member of Super Target in Mason City.
She loved animals, wildlife and nature.
Chris was the beloved mother of Jeffrey M. Walters and the loving
and devoted wife of Timothy S. Coffey. She is also survived by
her sister, Candace Fissers, of Las Vegas, Nev.; one cousin,
Jack, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and an ex-spouse, Michael C.
Walters, of Dallas, Texas.
Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge
of arrangements.

Alice Bushgens was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Nevada, the daughter
of Jens and Dora (Mehl) Peterson.
Alice was raised in the Nevada and Ames area and was the first
Miss Ames in 1938.
She moved to Mason City and married Donald K. Bushgens on March
28, 1941, in Mason City.
While living in Mason City, she worked at Kellum Interiors and
the Gretchen House in Clear Lake.
In 1976, she moved to Story City.
Alice had been a member of the First Congregational United Church
of Christ in Mason City and taught Sunday school.
She was also involved with the Girl Scouts. Alice was also a
member of the Sons of Norway and Danish Sisterhood.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary McBride and her husband,
Thomas, of Davenport; grandchildren, Amy and Sarah Greenberg
of Davenport; and one brother, Julian Peterson of Buffalo Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald K.
in 1969; son, Donald A.; two brothers, Charles and Otis; and
one sister, Marie.

Dr. Charles W. Trader, 83, of Pocomoke City, Md., died Friday
(Aug. 16, 1996) at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salibury
of heart failure.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Salem United
Methodist Church in Pocomoke City, Md., with the Rev. Boyd Etter
officiating. Interment will follow the memorial service at Bethany
United Methodist Church Cemetery. Arrangements were by Melson
Funeral Home.

Charles W. Trader was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Cristfield, Md.,
the son of Cornelia Alice (Tawes) Trader and Charles Bowen Trader.
Before continuing his education, he worked in the field service
of the United States Navy. In 1939 he obtained his Bachelor
of Arts degree at Western Maryland College, Westminster, Md.
He was graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine
in 1943.
Dr. Trader was inducted into the Navy in 1943 and began his
internship at the Northfolk Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va.
Following the internship, he took extra courses at the Naval
Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. He served overseas as the medical
officer for a flotilla of amphibious ships in the Pacific Theater
during the campaign of Okinawa. He did not return to the United
States until December of 1945. He continued duty in the Navy
until November 1946 when his resignation was accepted.
In December of 1946, Dr. Trader opened his office in Salisbury,
Md. A year later, he transferred to Memorial Clinic Hospital
Elkins, W.Va. In January 1949, he opened his office in Pocomoke
City, Md., where he continued in practice until his retirement
in 1982.
He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Pocomoke
City, Md., a member of Emeritus of the Maryland State Medical
Society, a life member of the American Medical Association and
a life member of the B.P.O.E. #1624 Elks Lodge in Pocomoke City,
Md.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jean Scott Trader; two
sons and their spouses, Charles Weldon Trader Jr. and Linda H.
Trader of Mason City, Iowa; John Scott Trader and Margaret Cushen
Trader of Hagerstown, Md.; one daughter and her spouse, Donna
Jean Trader Hartnett and Wayne J. Hartnett of Dover, Del.; three
grandsons, J. Scott Trader and David E. Trader of Hagerstown;
Charles W. Trader III of Mason City; one granddaughter, Kelly
Lynn Hartnett of Dover; one stepgrandson, Michael Kassakatis
of Mason City; one stepgranddaughter, Amy Arndt of Mason City;
and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Estelle Chilcutt and
Marie Daughtery; and three brothers, the Rev. John Trader, Judge
Clarence Trader and William Trader.

Susie T. Wooldridge was born Feb. 25, 1902, at Whittemore, the
daughter of Dennis and Margaret (McDonnell) Kinsella.
She was united in marriage to Everett Wooldridge on Aug. 29,
1959, at Mason City.
She lived in Clear Lake for several years before moving to Mason
City. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She is survived by a nephew, Edward D. Johnson and his wife,
RoseLee, of Mason City; a special cousin, Jean Kruger, of Livermore,
Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents; her husband; three sisters,
Grace Kinsella, Mary Johnson and Bernice Reynolds; and three
brothers, Mike Kinsella, Frank Kinsella and Leo Kinsella.

James Arthur Hermen
ELGIN
James Arthur Hermen, 78, of rural Elgin, died Tuesday evening
(Aug. 20, 1996) at his rural Elgin home, after an eight-month
bout with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Illyria
Community Church, rural Elgin, with the Rev. LeRoy Collins officiating.
Burial was in Illyria Cemetery, rural Elgin.
Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, was in charge of arrangements.
James Arthur ``Jim'' Hermen was born Jan. 11, 1918, near Volga,
to Arthur and Lettie (Hummel) Hermen. The Hermens moved to the
present location before Jim was a year old.
After graduating from Elgin High School in 1938, he joined the
U.S. Army on Nov. 16, 1942. He was in the military police until
he was discharged as a Staff Sergeant on March 26, 1946.
Jim was united in marriage to Rose Ella Chase on June 28, 1951,
at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Two sons were born to this
union.
He operated the Elgin Echo, a printing and publishing business
for 37 years, retiring in 1980.
During his retirement years, he studied the steel electric guitar
under Darwin Scharge. He and Rose Ella, who played the accordion,
performed duets at many events.
Jim was also an excellent wood worker, and enjoyed collecting
guns.
He was active in Illyria Community Church for many years, and
was a 51-year member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Rose Ella; two sons, Steven and
his wife, Mary, of Elgin, and Duane and his wife, Terri, of Mason
City; seven grandchildren; a stepgrandson; one great-granddaughter;
a sister, LaFonda Heins of Volga; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy

The Rev. George Wilber Baker
INDIANOLA
The Rev. George Wilber Baker, 90, of Indianola, died Wednesday
(Aug. 21, 1996) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at
the United Methodist Church, What Cheer, with the Rev. Vince
Homan officiating. Burial will be in the Sixteen Cemetery, near
Thornburg.
Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Sunday at the Harden Funeral Chapel,
What Cheer, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. to greet
family and friends.
He was born Feb. 21, 1906, at White City, near Oskaloosa, to
Wilber and Nellie Phillips Baker.
He was united in marriage to Selma W. Johnson in August of 1928.
She preceded him in death.
He later married Beatrice Boslaugh Runyon in October of 1990.
After graduating from Thornburg High School in 1924, he attended
John Fletcher College at University Park and graduated in 1928.
He went on to attend the school of Garrett Theological Seminary.
He was a clergy member of the United Methodist Church. He served
the following United Methodist Churches through the years: Beacon,
North English, Malcom, Seward, Ill., Winebago, Ill., Eldon, Batavia,
Shell Rock, Rockford, Marble Rock, Cresco and Bonair.
From 1942 throught 1945, he served as Chaplain for the U.S.
Army in England and France.
He was a member of Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, High Twelve
International, Reserve Officers Association and served on Governers
Council on Aging and also served with the Methodist Board of
Home Missions from 1930 to 1936 on the Ponca Indian Reservation
in Oklahoma.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; one son and daughter-in-law,
Wilber and Elayne Baker of West Norriton, Pa.; one daughter and
son-in-law, Mary Joyce and Leroy Pickett, of Downers Grove, Ill.;
one sister and brother-in-law, Neva and George Cleland, of Mediapolis;
six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebecca Baker, Kathryn Lavelle,
Barbara and Pamela Pickett; and two great-grandchildren, Shyannon
and Colleen Lavelle.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Selma; one brother,
Corydon Frink; and one sister, Myrle Baker.

Raymond J. Barkmeier
HAMPTON
Raymond J. Barkmeier, 78, died Thursday (Aug. 22, 1996) in
Naples, Fla.
He was a widely known grocer in Hampton and former president
of the Associated Grocers of Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church, Hampton, with Father Jerry Condon and Father
Walter J. Kleinfehn officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton
Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral
Home, Hampton, with a 7 p.m. Scripture service.
Mr. Barkmeier and his longtime friend and business partner,
F.D. Wullbrandt, operated B & W Grocery stores in the Hampton
area for 40 years and also owned the First State Bank of Greene.
Mr. Barkmeier served 23 years as president of Associated Grocers
of Iowa (A.G.I.).
Born March 23, 1918, in Exeter, Neb., he was the son of August
and Anna (Menke) Barkmeier.
His roots in the food business began with the family store in
Exeter. He worked in sales for Sunshine Biscuit Company for a
number of years until he and Wullbrandt established their first
B & W store in Hampton in 1947. The chain expand with stores
in six area towns Sheffield, Dumont, Greene, Allison, Clarion
and Nashua until their sale to the Fairco Corp. in 1985.
Mr. Barkmeier was elected president of A.G.I. in 1961. Under
his leadership, the organization expanded to 300 retail members.
In 1976, A.G.I. built the state's largest wholesale food-distributor
warehouse. The building on the south edge of Ankeny was described
at the time by one trade magazine as ``state-of-the-art'' in
food distribution.
One of Hampton's most respected civic and business leaders,
Mr. Barkmeier was committed to community service. As chairman
of the building committee for the Hampton Community School District,
he led a successful campaign to approve a bond issue for a new
high school building. He later chaired the fund drive to build
a new St. Patrick's Catholic Church building down the street.
Mr. Barkmeier was a past president of the Hampton Chamber of
Commerce, Rotary Club and Quarterback Club. He was an avid sports
fan and an ardent supporter of the University of Iowa. A member
of the U of I President's Club, he lived in Iowa City for about
two years following his retirement from the food business in
1985.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, whom he married on Feb. 9,
1948; and six children, John of Appleton, Wis.; Jim and Joe,
of Champaign, Ill.; Jerry, of Springfield, Ill.; Julie, of Bethesda,
Md.; and Jeff, of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Andrew,
Sara and Lauren of Appleton, Wis.; Mathew and James, of Champaign,
Ill.; Daniel and Kyle, also of Champaign, Ill., and Jared and
Lia, of Springfield, Ill.; and two sisters, Helena and Rose Lilly,
of Exeter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lou, Walter
and Vincent; and sisters, Ella Morgan and Lillian.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the Alzheimer's
Foundation and Alzheimer's Research.

GARNER
Burdette E. Nelson Norton Umbarger, 88, of 104 Fairway Circle,
Garner, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health
Center East, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First
Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive S.W., Mason City,
with the Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating.
There is no visitation. The body will be cremated. Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge
of arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter FNl Student
Scholarship Fund.
Burdette E. Nelson Norton Umbarger was born April 3, 1908, in
Odebolt, the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Butterfield) Nelson.
She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) in 1929
and received her Masters Degree from Omaha University. Burdette
taught school at Milford and Council Bluffs for a short period
of time then spent the majority of her teaching career in Omaha.
Burdette married Frank A. Umbarger on May 30, 1981, in Omaha.
They have resided in Garner since 1984.
Burdette was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 68 years,
Phi Delta Gamma Educational Sorority and the Presbyterian Church.
For three years, she was co-coordinator of ``55 Alive'' for the
state of Nebraska.
Burdette taught calligraphy at North Iowa Area Community College
and enjoyed gardening, golfing, bridge, bowling and her friends.
Survivors include her husband, Frank A. Umbarger of Garner;
daughter, Kay Severson and her husband, Rich, of Sarasota, Fla.;
stepsons, Duane Umbarger and his wife, Ruth, of Mason City, and
Bob Umbarger and his wife, Donna, of Mason City; daughter-in-law,
Margaret Norton of Plattsmouth, Neb.; grandchildren, Julee Jones
and husband, Vic Scoggin of Nashville, Tenn.; Janna Jones of
Tampa Fla.; Lynne Severson of Bradenton, Fla.; Todd Severson
and his wife, Missy, of Brandenton, Fla;. Brad Severson and his
wife, Cindy, of Brandenton, Fla.; Beth Severson and her husband,
Ron Russell, of Brandenton, Fla.; Anne VerHelst and her husband,
David, of Mason City; Janet Schaefer and her husband, Paul, of
Mason City; Jean Gettis and her husband, Mike, of Lakeview, Minn.;
Carey Umbarger and his wife, Sue, of Northwood; Raymond Umbarger

Bernadine Kaiser, 77, of 116 N. Boulder, Nora Springs, died
Wednesday (Aug. 21, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West,
Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First
United Methodist Church, 202 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the
Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Rockford.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sheckler
Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior
to the service at the church on Monday.
Bernadine Kaiser was born May 18, 1919, in Blue Earth County,
Minn., daughter of Clyde and Grace (Perry) VanBlair.
She married Louis Thomas Kaiser on April 12, 1947, in Austin,
Minn.
Bernadine graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. She
and her family moved to a farm near Rockford in 1947.
In 1970, they moved into Nora Springs.
She was a member of the Wigwam-N-Wagon Club, Mason City.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Jarrar of LaVerne, Calif.;
one son, Larry Waller and his wife, Julie, of Huntsville, Ala.;
and four grandchildren, Janeen Jarrar and Ramsey Jarrar, both
of LaVerne, Calif., and Jeffrey Waller and Jenifer Waller, both
of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on March
12, 1994; and one brother, Dale VanBlair.

Curtis R. Jante, 73, of 607 N. Shore Drive, died Thursday (Aug.
22, 1996) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran
Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.
Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemtery, with military honors
provided by the Garner V.F.W. Post #5515.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour before
services at the church.
The family requests memorials in his name.
Curtis was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Garner, the son of Edward
and Frieda (Dietz) Jante.
He graduated from Garner High School in 1940. He farmed with
his parents before entering the service. He was a member of the
United States Coast Guard during World War II in the European
Theater.
He was united in marriage with Florence Cline on Aug. 25, 1946,
at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Garner. Together, they
farmed in the Garner area until 1956.
Curtis and Florence built the A&W Restaurant in Belmond and
operated it until 1961 when they sold the business. They purchased
the A&W in Forest City and operated it until 1989.
He and Florence moved to Clear Lake in January of 1989.
While involved with A&W, Curtis was a member of the National
Advisory Council for A&W and was president of the Iowa A&W Association.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake and a charter
member of Garner V.F.W. Post #5515.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and
trapping. He enjoyed sharing time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Jante, of Clear Lake; three
children, Ray Jante and his wife, Jan, of Keokuk; Linda Dickson
and her husband, Jim, of Ankeny; and Sherill Moen and her husband,
Dan, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a sister, Bernice Becker of Jewell;
a brother, LuVerne Jante and his wife, Helen, of Fort Dodge;
eight grandchildren, Teri Jo Peterson, Eddy Jante, Billie Jante,
Brett Jante, Meghan Dickson, Guy Dickson, Jeremie Moen and Lyndsey
Moen; and four great-grandchildren, Teri Lyn Peterson, Samantha
Peterson, Ashley Jante and Colton Jante.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Edna;
two brothers, Elmer Jante and Edwin Jante, who gave his life
at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941; and a sister, Lois McCabe Jones.
