Richard V. Evenson

CLEAR LAKE



Richard V. Evenson, 53, 5851 S. Shore Drive, died Wednesday

(Aug. 14, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason

City.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Ward-Van

Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Lewis of Clear Lake

United Methodist officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park

Cemetery, Mason City.



The family suggests memorials be given to the Richard V. Evenson

Memorial Fund.



Richard was born June 26, 1943, in Mason City, the son of Virgel

and Alene (Schneider) Evenson. Richard entered the Air Force

in November of 1961 and served his country for 20 years retiring

as a civil engineer May 6, 1984.



Richard was a kind and loving man. He married Loma Decker on

April 22, 1973, and she passed away April 22, 1982.



He married Bonnie Amundson on Dec. 29, 1990, in Las Vegas, Nev.



Richard worked for Unisys for six years until they closed, and

then went to work for Cole Sewell for five years in the production

area.



Richard is survived by his wife, Bonnie Evenson, of Clear Lake;

mother, Mrs. Alene Fain of Sheffield; seven stepchildren, Dennis

Amundson and his wife, Stephanie, of San Diego, Calif.; Jay Amundson

and his wife, Linda, of Clear Lake; JoDee Cooling, of Fon du

Lac, Wis.; Donna Amundson, of Fon du Lac, Wis.; Loma Vessey and

her husband, John, of St. Paul, Minn.; Walter Decker and his

wife, Lynette, of Florida, and Kathy Lolley of Louisiana; one

brother, Gregory Evenson, of Boone; two sisters, Carolyn Smit

and her husband, Delbert, of Sheffield, and Charlotte Frohling

and her husband, Byron, of Waterloo; 19 stepgrandchildren; and

one stepgreat-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his father, Virgel Evenson, and

stepfather, James Fain; and his wife, Loma Evenson.

MASON CITY



Lynn ``Tex'' Pearson, 84, of 919 N. Pennsylvania Ave., died

Wednesday (Aug. 14, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.



Private family graveside services will be held Saturday at Sunset

Rest Cemetery, Northwood, with the Rev. Barb McCaulley of pastoral

care at North Iowa Mercy Health Center officiating.



Following graveside services, friends of Tex and the family

are invited to share memories with the family at the home of

Ted and Lynne Wisman, 20722 Poplar Ave., after 1 p.m. Saturday.



There will be no visitation; the body was cremated.



Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in

charge of arrangements.



Lynn Gillette ``Tex'' Pearson was born July 31, 1912, in Clear

Lake, Minn., the son of Jesse James and Ada Marcelline (Gillette)

Pearson.



At an young age, Tex came to Mason City with his family and

attended Mason City schools.



Tex married Louise Smith on June 4, 1938, in Northwood.



Tex served in the ``Old Guard'' which is now the National Guard

from 1928-1939.



Tex and Louise operated a dry cleaning business in Charles City

and Oelwein before returning to Mason City in 1956.



Tex and Louise operated the Around the Clock Dry Cleaning for

many years until they retired in 1977.



During his senior years, Tex drove a city transit bus making

many friends during that time.



He could be frequently found at the Mason City Senior Citizens

Center playing pool when he wasn't watching Cubs baseball.



Tex was an active member of the Mason City Senior Citizens Center.



Survivors include his wife, Louise Pearson, of Mason City; one

son, Frank Pearson and his wife, Nancy, of Mason City; three

daughters, Lynne Wisman and her husband, Ted, of Mason City;

Nancy Gunther, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Marsha Bailey,

of Richardson, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Beth Snyder, of Mason

City; Rachel Pearson, of Mason City; John Wisman and his wife,

Karen, of Bellevue, Wash.; Holly Mennen, of Mason City; Mary

Wisman, of Bellevue, Wash.; Bobby Wisman, of Mason City; William

Gunther and his wife, Rikke, of Aalborg, Denmark; Susan Wise

and her husband, Jeff, of Plano, Texas; Richard Bailey, of Richardson,

Texas, and Robert Bailey, of Richardson, Texas; four great-grandsons,

Max and Jonathon Wisman, of Bellevue, Wash.; Nick Mennen, of

Mason City, and Christian Gunther, of Aalborg, Denmark; a special

sister-in-law, Jeanne Daniels, of Mason City; and a brother-in-law,

Raleigh Smith, of Kensett.



He was preceded in death by one sister, Marvel Chute.

Cora E. Thompson, 93, of Algona, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 1996)

at home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United

Methodist Church, with the Rev. Philip Webb and the Rev. David

Byrd officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.



Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf

Funeral Home, with a 7:30 p.m. service by the Order of Eastern

Star Chapter #68.



Cora Thompson was born Sept. 30, 1902, in Algona.



Survivors include one son, Edward Thompson of Algona; five daughters,

Marilyn Guthals of Aurora, Colo.; Virginia Devine, New Hampton;

Carol Rice, of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; Dolores Johnson of Algona,

and Patricia Orrick of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; 30

great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one sister,

Maud Blome of Seneca, Ill.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson,

three brothers and one sister.

Ruth Foley, 82, of Whittemore, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 1996)

at the Algona Manor Care Center, Algona.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael's

Catholic Church, Whittemore, with the Rev. Ed Murray officiating.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Algona.



Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld

-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Whittemore, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a

7:30 p.m. parish prayer service.



Ruth Foley was born Aug. 23, 1913, at Algona.



Survivors include two stepdaughters, Mary Beth Bestenlehner

of Omaha, Neb., and Anne Selner of Shoreview, Minn.; four step-

grandchildren; three brothers Andrew Miller of Clear Lake; and

Howard Miller and Ed Miller, both of Algona; and three sisters,

Helen Flynn, of Edina, Minn.; Edna Hutchins, of Hutchinson, Minn.,

and Cecelia Keenan, Minneapolis, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

CHARLES CITY



Anna Schmitt, 89, a former resident of Route 3, Charles City,

died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 1996) at the New Hampton Care Center.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate

Conception Church, Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek

officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.



Visitation will be held from noon until 9 p.m. today at the

Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with a 7:30

p.m. Vigil Scripture service. Visitation will also be held one

prior to services at the church on Saturday.



Anna Schmitt was born June 12, 1907, at Gilbertville.



Survivors include four daughters, Janice Stanton of Greene;

Joanne Brannon and Donna Schwickerath, both of New Hampton, and

Mary Ann Johnson of Owatonna, Minn.; one son, Lawrence Schmitt

of Charles City; one brother, Francis Krempges, Independence;

two sisters, Mary Sadler, Oelwein, and Josephine Weber, Dunkerton;

20 grandchildren; and 15-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

one brother and one sister.

Leonard Arndorfer, 88, of Wesley, died Wednesday (Aug. 14,

1996) at the Good Samaritan Center, Algona.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday

at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wesley, with Father Paul Bormann

officiating. interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.



Visitation is after 2:30 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf

Funeral Home, Wesley, with a 3 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the

Americas rosary and a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service followed

by an 8 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary.



Leonard Arndorfer was born May 4, 1908, at St. Benedict.



Survivors include his wife, Mildred, of Wesley; one son, Dan

Arndorfer of Marion; one daughter, Sister Vicky, of Cedar Rapids;

five brothers and sisters, Erma Lichter of Algona; Clarence ``Bud''

Arndorfer of Algona; Arthur Arndorfer of Algona; Mary Ann McKenna

of Algona; and Betty Loebig of Sun City, Ariz.



He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one

brother.

Mrs. Leona (Carl) Neiderman, 91, of Albuquerque,  a former

Des Moines and Mason City, Iowa, resident, died Saturday (Aug.

10, 1996) in Albuquerque.



Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the

Estel-Perrin-Avey Chapel, Marshalaltown, Iowa, with Pastor Gregg

Davison of  Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Private graveside

services will precede the service at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens.



The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time

on Saturday at the funeral home.

Helen A. Benson, 96, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Orchard, died

Thursday (Aug. 15, 1996) at Western Home, Cedar Falls.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21,

1996, at the First Baptist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Jerry

Newland officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles

City.



Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion

Funeral Home, Osage, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday

at the church.



Helen was born Aug. 4, 1900, at Orchard, the daughter of Guy

and Della (Boyle) Hoisington.



Helen graduated from Orchard High School.



She married Paul A. Benson on March 15, 1921.



Helen lived in Mitchell County until 1960.



She was employed as a cook at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital,

Osage, and the Western Home in Cedar Falls. She had resided in

Cedar Falls since 1969.



Survivors include one daughter, Imogene Barton and her husband,

Dean, of Hockessin, Del.; five sons, Wayne Benson and his wife,

Audrey, of Rudd; Guy Benson and his wife, Nedra, of Yorba Linda,

Calif.; Wesley Benson and his wife, Pat, of Cedar Falls; Darwin

Benson and his wife, Carol, of Cedar Rapids, and John Benson

and his wife, Mick, of Red Bluff, Calif.; one brother, Vernon

Hoisington of Osage; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren;

and one great-great-granddaughter.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul A. Benson,

in 1947; one son, Paul Dean Benson, in 1993; two sisters; one

brother; and three granddaughters.



The family suggests memorials to the Iowa Commission for The

Blind in her memory.

Rose Engstler, 89, of Garner, died Wednesday (Aug. 14, 1996)

at the Concord Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface

Catholic Church, with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating. Burial

will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Garner.



Visitation will be held from 3:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., with a combined rosary by

the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Rosary Society

at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.



Rose Anna Engstler, the daughter of Bernard and Frances (West)

Dankbar, was born Sept. 6, 1906, at Haverhill.



In 1917, she moved with her family to a farm north of Garner.



She attended school at the Garner Community Schools.



On Oct. 12, 1926, she was married to Alfred Engstler at St.

Boniface Catholic Church.



They farmed north of town until 1970, when they retired and

moved into Garner.



Due to ill health, Rose moved to Concord Care Center in 1993.



She enjoyed her family, friends, baking and gardening.



She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters

of the Americas, Rosary Society and Garner Senior Citizens.



She is survived by five children, Charlene East of Garner; Duane

Engstler and his wife, MaryLou, of Britt; June Van Oort and her

husband, Homer, of Garner; Ronald Engstler, of Forest City, and

Russell Engstler and his wife, Monita, of Garner; 20 grandchildren;

35 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Dankbar

of Sacramento, Calif.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Engstler, on

March 16, 1980; her parents; two sisters, Mary Schneider and

Bertha Jordan; and six brothers, Louis Dankbar, Frank Dankbar,

Joseph Dankbar, Bernard Dankbar and two infant brothers.

Lucky A. Bly

GREELEY, Colo.



Lucky A. Bly, 33, of Greeley, died Tuesday (Aug. 6, 1996) at

his home.



Lucky Bly was born March 23, 1963, in Portland, Ore., to Virgil

Lee and Devona Ida (Duhlberg) Bly. He moved to Kensett, Iowa,

at the age of 12, where he completed his education graduating

from St. Ansgar High School, St. Ansgar, Iowa. After graduation

he entered the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a flight mechanic.

In 1986 he moved to Greeley, where he resided until the time

of his death. He was active in Bible study groups.



He is survived by his father, Virgil L. Bly, Kensett, Iowa;

his mother, Devona Jones, Portland, Ore.; his stepmother, Carolynn

Bly, Kensett, Iowa; two brothers, Carl Baty, Portland, Ore.,

and Michael Bly, Kensett, Iowa; two sisters, Dede Bly and Vickie

Bly, both of Portland, Ore., and four nieces and one nephew.



Lucky Bly was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Baty.



Memorial services were held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10,

at Adamson Memorial Chapel, Greeley, Colo. Memorial services

will be held at a later date in Iowa.

Agnes Steven, 73, of Mason City and formerly of Wesley, died

Friday at Hospice of North Iowa.



Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph

Catholic Church in Wesley. Father Paul Bormann will officiate

and burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wesley.



Visitation will be Monday from 2:30 to 9 p.m. at Garry-Roberts-Murphy

-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley.  There will be a C.D. of A. Rosary at

3 p.m. and a Parish Prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.



Agnes Tusha was born on March 15, 1923 at Garner, the daughter

of John and Anna (Tlach) Tusha.  She attended rural school and

helped at the family farm.  Agnes was married to Raymond Steven

on Nov. 27, 1947 at Duncan.  They farmed in Burt, Whittemore

and moved to their farm in Wesley in 1959.  They moved to Mason

City in 1992.  Agnes was very active in Ladies Guild, Hospice,

Cancer Society, V.F.W. as a volunteer. She was an active member

of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City and a member of Mason

City Senior Citizens Center.  Agnes served a president of the

Legion Auxiliary and also was District President.



Agnes is survived by her husband, Ray Steven of Mason City;

one son, Ray, Jr. of Coon Rapids, Minn.; one sister, Marie Tusha

of Dayton, Ohio; and one brother, George Tusha of Garner.



Agnes was preceded in death by her parents and one sister-in-law.

Moines.



Survivors include her husband, Bob Moen of Lake Mills; her parents,

of Altoona; one sister, Patti Robitaille of Columbus, Ohio; and

one grandmother.

Paul Otto Studer was born March 6, 1914 in Wesley.



Survivors include his wife Marcella ``Sally;'' four daughters,

June Reding of Wesley, Carolyn Krejci of Alexandria, Va., Suzanne

Blain of Columbus, Ohio, and Muriel Klosterman of Maple Grove,

Minn.; three sons, David Studer of Wesley,the Rev. Louis Studer

of St. Paul, Minn., and Elmer Studer of San Francisco, Calif.;

9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three brothers, Ben

Studer, Nate Studer, and Mark Studer all of Welsey; three sisters,

Eunice Ricke of Bancroft, Zita Welter of Montgomery City, Mo.,

and Bernadette Cassel of Los Angeles, Calif.

CHARLES CITY 



Elmer L. Tripp, 86, a former resident of 1205 D Street, Charles

City, died Friday evening (August 16, 1996) at the Floyd County

Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser

Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Larry Valley, of Trinity

United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the

Deerfield Cemetery in Chickasaw County.



Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from noon to 9 p.m.

today and from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.



Elmer Lee Tripp was born Jan. 26, 1910 in Osage.



Survivors include two sons, Rod of Garner and Terry of Delhi;

five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons,

a grandson, three sisters and one brother.

Charles Trader

POCOMOKE CITY, Md 



Dr. Charles W. Trader, 83, of Pocomoke City, Md., died Friday

(August 16, 1996) at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salibury

of heart failure.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Salem United

Methodist Church in Pocomoke City, Md., with the Rev. Boyd Etter

officiating.  Interment will follow the memorial service at Bethany

United Methodist Church Cemetery. Melson Funeral Home is in charge

of the arrangements.

Charles W. Trader was born Aug. 7, 1913 in Cristfield, Md.,

the son of Cornelia Alice (Tawes) Trader and Charles Bowen Trader.

Before continuing his education, he worked in the field service

of the United States Navy. In 1939, he obtained his Bachelor

of Arts degree at Western Maryland College, Westminster, Md.

He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine

in 1943.



Dr. Trader was inducted into the Navy in 1943 and began his

internship at the Northfolk Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va. Following

the internship, took extra courses at the Naval Medical Center,

Bethesda, Md. He served overseas as the Medical officer for a

flotilla of amphibious ships in the Pacific Theater during the

campaign of Okinawa.  He did not return to the United States

until December 1945. He continued duty in the Navy until November

1946 when his resignation was accepted.



In December 1946, Dr. Trader opened his office in Salisbury,

Md.  A year later, he transferred to Memorial Clinic Hospital

Elkins, W. Va.  In January 1949, he opened his office in Pocomoke

City, Md., where he continued in practice until his retirement

in 1982.



He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Pocomoke

City, Md., a member of Emeritus of the Maryland State Medical

Society, a life member of the American Medical Association and

a life member of the B.P.O.E. #1624 Elks Lodge in Pocomoke City,

Md.



Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jean Scott Trader; two

sons and their spouses, Charles Weldon Trader, Jr. and Linda

H. Trader of Mason City, John Scott Trader and Margaret Cushen

Trader of Hagerstown, Md., one daughter and her spouse, Donna

Jean Trader Hartnett and Wayne J. Hartnett of Dover, Del.; three

grandsons, J. Scott Trader and David E. Trader of Hagerstown,

Md., and Charles W. Trader, III of Mason City; one granddaughter,

Kelly Lynn Hartnett of Dover; one step grandson, Michael Kassakatis

of Mason City; one step granddaughter, Amy Arndt of Mason City;

several nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by two sisters, Estelle Chilcutt and

Marie Daughtery; and three brothers, Rev. John Trader, Judge

Clarence Trader and William Trader.

Iver M. Sorensen was born June 29, 1926, near Emmons, Minn.



Survivors include his wife, Hazel of Lake Mills; his daughter,

Becky Martinson of Joice; his son, Doug Sorenson of Hanlontown;

five grandchildren; three sisters, Gerda Kleinschrodt of Albert

Lea, Minn., Agnes Berger of Crystal, Minn., and Rhyna Berger

of Minnetonka, Minn.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Steffen of Ottumwa, and Brian Steffen of Forest City; one brother

Patrick `Don' Donald Aird, 76, of 605 South Polk, passed away

Friday (August 16, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center.



Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic

Church, 714 N. Adams St., with Father John R. Kremer officiating.

Interment will be in the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

at 7 p.m. at the Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123

Second St. S.E., Mason City.



Patrick was born on Jan. 7, 1920, to George and Anna (Broderick)

Aird.  He grew up near McGregor, where he later graduated from

high school. In 1941, Patrick enlisted in the United States Navy

in which he served until 1946. On March 21, 1949, Patrick was

united in marriage to Pearl Bernice Mann at Arnold's Park.



Patrick loved to play card games every Sunday with his family.

He especially enjoyed pinochle and rummy along with many others.



He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs play baseball during the

summer and the Chicago Bulls play basketball in the fall and

winter.  When neither team was playing, he loved to watch the

World Wrestling Federation.



Patrick was a member of the Mason City Moose Lodge, the VFW

Post 733 and Holy Family Catholic Church.



Patrick is survived by his loving wife, Pearl Aird of Mason

City; three children, Mrs. Jerry (Ruth) Bose of Springfield,

Ill., Patrick Gary Aird and his special friend, Peggy Wachendorf,

of Mason City, Scott Aird of Mason City; five grandchildren,

Terry Ellen Aird of Minneapolis, Minn., Lana Bose of Springfield,

Ill., Donald Patrick Aird, Ashley Ann Air and Tanner Scott Aird,

all of Mason City; one sister Martina Martin of McGregor; and

one brother, George Aird of McGregor.

Donald Hamilton

Donald Hamilton, 73, passed away Saturday (Aug. 17, 1996) at

the Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Neb.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United

Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating.

Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery, Garner.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Ewing Funeral Home, Britt, and one hour prior services at the

church on Thursday.



Donald, the son of Milo and Mamie Porter Hamilton, was born

Jan. 18, 1923, in Hampton.



At an early age, Donald moved with his family from Franklin

County to the Hayfield area.



He attended school in Hayfield, graduating from the Hayfield

High School in 1940. He then started farming on his own.



On June 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mona C. Lowe

in Mason City.



The couple farmed in Hayfield and later in Joice, before moving

to a farm near Britt in 1958, where Donald also sold feed. He

retired from farming in 1985.



For the past 10 years, the couple wintered in Weslaco, Texas.



Donald was involved with the Mexican Children's Refugee, building

homes in Mexico. He also enjoyed golfing.



Donald was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United

Methodist Church Men, was chairman of trustees at the church,

was past president of the Beef Producers, a volunteer for Human

Services and the Elderbridge Agency for the Aging.



He is survived by his wife, Mona, of Britt; three sons, Mark

Hamilton of Van Nuys, Calif.; Paul Hamilton and his wife, Sandra,

of Gretna, Neb., and Jay Hamilton and his wife, Barbara, of Colo;

two daughters, Sue Beukema and her husband, Mike, of Kanawha,

and Jean Buchholz and her husband, Aaron, of Omaha, Neb.; five

grandchildren, Bryan and Brent Beukema, Kristina Hamilton, and

twins, Joel and Elizabeth Buchholz; one sister, Carole Halfpop

and her husband, Roger, of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Lynea Bosch

Bosch of Rockwell and Elaine Swank of Seffner, Fla.; one aunt,

one uncle, many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Otto Holecek;

and one brother, Alan Hamilton.

Schoby of Latimer; and Esther Reising of Algona; great-grandmother,

Ruby Schoby of Britt; two sisters, Sherri Lunning of Forest City,

and Tammy Schoby of Algona; and one brother, Travis Schoby of

Rose Nelson was born on July 28, 1902, in Cleghorn, the daughter

of Jules and Emma (Portner) Nicolet.



She attended rural schools near Meservey, graduating from the

eighth grade.



She then began working as a housekeeper for a family near Alden.



She was united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1924, to Clarence Nelson

in a Methodist parsonage in Mason City.



They made their home outside of Thornton, where she worked side

by side with her husband, farming.



In March of 1965, they retired and moved into Thornton.



Rose enjoyed fishing, playing cards, cooking and spending time

with her family.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thornton,

the As You Like It Club, Thornton Senior Citizens and the Rebekah

Lodge.



She is survived by four sons, Marvin of Parker Colo.; LaVerne

of Thornton; Willard of Clear Lake, and James of Thornton; nine

grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mabel

Oehlert of Rockwell and Gladys Dixon of Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her husband, one great-grandson,

two brothers and five sisters.

George Hrubes, 72, of Garner, died Monday (Aug. 19, 1996) at

the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Catholic Church in Duncan, with the Rev. John W. Hemann officiating

and Monsignor John Chihak and the Rev. Jerry Kopacek as cocelebrants.

Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.



Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Cataldo

Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, where a combined rosary

will be held at 3 p.m. by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas

and the  Rosary Society, a Scripture wake service at 7 p.m. and

a combined rosary at 8 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and the

Catholic Workman's Lodge.



George Edward Hrubes, the son of Edward George and Della Mary

(Wellik) Hrubes was born April 3, 1924, on a farm south of Duncan.



He attended the rural schools of Liberty Township.



George worked for various farmers, farmed with his parents and

also did custom grain and livestock trucking.



On Sept. 11, 1945, he married Rosemary K. Trea at St. Wenceslaus

Catholic Church, Duncan.



They farmed and lived on the Hrubes farm farm from 1945 to 1987.



Upon retiring in 1987, they moved into Garner.



George also worked at the Duncan Farm Service, Pioneer Seed,

Golden Harvest Seed Corn and Duncan Heights.



He enjoyed his family, grandchildren, friends, fishing, grilling,

rose gardening and making bread.



The church and his faith were George's life.



He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he had

served on the Church Board, the Catholic Workman's Lodge and

was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.



He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Hrubes of Garner; his son,

Greg Hrubes of Lake Mills and his special friend, LeAnn Nordskog;

his daughter, Lori Bellinghausen of Ottumwa; 10 grandchildren,

Bridget Hrubes, Heidi Hrubes, Angela Hrubes, Tiffani Hrubes,

Nicholas Hrubes, Scott Hrubes, Lyndsi Hrubes, Lara Hrubes, Brent

Reindl and Elizabeth Bellinghausen; a great-granddaughter, Mackenzie

Hanson; a sister, Clara Formanek and her husband, Cyril, of Britt;

a sister-in-law, Ruth Meyer of Strawberry Point; and a special

friend, Bill Young of Garner.



He was preceded in death by his mother, Della Hrubes, Jan. 23,

1977; his father, Edward Hrubes, Sept. 13, 1979; a sister, Lillian

Hrubes, June 17, 1944; and a brother, William Hrubes, Jan. 17,

1982.

Chief Warrant Officer Douglas A. Faas, 35, serving with the

U.S. Army in Wuerzburg, Germany, and formerly of Stacyville,

died Saturday (Aug. 10, 1996) due to a brain stem hemorrhage

in Germany.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22,

1996, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev.

Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation

Cemetery.



Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Visitation

Catholic Church in Stacyville with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m.

Scripture service.



Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.



He was born Oct. 20, 1960, in Osage, the son of John and Monica

(Rogers) Faas.



Douglas attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville and

graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1979.



He married Julie Smith on Oct. 30, 1982, in Salinas, Calif.



CW2 Douglas A. Faas entered the United States Army on July 31,

1979, and attended basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.



He attended advance individual training at Fort Lee, Va., and

trained as a personal management specialist. His first duty assignement

was at Fort Ord, Calif.



In 1983, he attended the Counter Intelligence Agent course at

Fort Huachuca, Ariz.



From 1983 to 1986, he was assigned to the 205th and 165th MI

BN in Frankfurt, Germany. From 1986 to 1990, he served with the

Los Angeles Field Station with the 902nd MI BN.



In 1990, he attended the Warrant Officers course at Fort Rucker,

Ala. Upon graduation of the Warrant Officers course, he attended

the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, Calif.,

for German language training.



Upon graduation from DLI, he served as a Counter Intelligence

agent in Mainz, Germany, and served with the Berlin Brigade in

Macedonia.



Chief Faas served as the Special Agent in Charge for the Mainz

MI Field Office and upon its closure, he became the Detachment

Commander for the Wuerzburg Military Intelligence Detachment,

66th MI Group (Provisional).



Survivors include his wife, Julie; son, Nathan; and daughter,

Brianna, all of Wuerzburg, Germany; parents, John and Monica

Faas of Stacyville; four sisters, Diane Beckman and her husband,

Mark, of New Hampton; Denise Mayer and her husband, Bruce, of

Stacyville; Debra Schlicht of Fort Dodge; and Doreen Bries and

her husband, Rod, of Monona; four brothers, David Faas and his

wife, Cathy Sue, of Racine, Minn.; Daniel Faas and his wife,

Kathy Jo, of Osage; Donald Faas of Minneapolis, Minn., and Darrell

Faas of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and 18 nieces and nephews.
