NORA SPRINGS 



Myrtle Christiansen, 87, rural Nora Springs, died Sunday (August

4, 1996) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rock Creek

Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Hoppenworth officiating.

Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.



Visitation at Champion Funeral Home in Osage will begin at 5:30

p.m. today with the family receiving friends from 5:30 until

7:30 p.m., and will continue one hour prior to services at the

church on Wednesday.



Myrtle was born June 14, 1909, in rural Nora Springs, the daughter

of Andrew and Kristina (Franstad) Hanson. She attended rural

schools in Mitchell County and Osage High School. She was confirmed

May 13, 1923, by the Rev. O.C. Myhre.



Myrtle was united in marriage to Carl Christiansen on June 25,

1931, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church. They farmed in Mitchell

County.



She was a lifelong member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church where

she served in leadership positions in RCCW, Rebekah Circle and

Lydia Mission Circle. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and knitting.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were blessed with many

of her sweaters. She donated many of her hand-knit items to the

Rock Creek bazaars.



Sports were an important part of her life. She was a Twins fan,

followed Carl's horseshoe pitching tournaments and bowled in

the Happy Mixers and the Grandpa and Grandma League through this

last season. Her birthday was Flag Day and she loved our flag

and country.



Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Carl Christiansen

of Nora Springs; three daughters, Nancy Folkerts and her husband,

Dale, of Rudd, Dorothy Schmidt and her husband, Francis, of Nora

Springs, and Helen Randolph and her husband, Randy, of Dallas,

Texas; two sons, Dr. Paul Christiansen and his wife, Barbara,

of Mount Vernon, and George Christiansen of Nora Springs; 13

grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Glen Hanson

and his wife, Alvera, of Nora Springs, Arnold Hanson and his

wife, Betty, of Nora Springs, and Olaf Hanson and his wife, Dorothy,

of San Jose, Calif.



She was preceded in death by her parents.

Robert James Petersen

Robert James Petersen, 72, of Rome, Ga., formerly of Thornton,

Iowa, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Rome, Ga., died Thursday (Aug. 1,

1996) at his home.



Robert James (Bud) Petersen was born March 29, 1924, in Thornton,

Iowa, a son of Thomas A. Sr. and Olina (Christensen) Petersen.



Robert Petersen grew up in Thornton, Iowa, and graduated from

Thornton High School.



He was active in baseball while in high school and worked at

his father's dairy.



Robert graduated from the Southeastern University in Washington,

D.C., with a masters in accounting.



He served as a clerk on J. Edgar Hoover's staff in 1942 at age

18.



He entered the FBI Academy in 1950, and was continuously employed

with the FBI from August of 1942 through May of 1976, with the

exception of time served with the United States Marine Corps,

honorably discharged.



In December of 1954, Robert was appointed FBI Special Agent

Headquarter Supervisor in Washington, D.C. He continued in a

supervisory capacity rising through the ranks to Assistant Special

Agent in Charge serving throughout the United States.



After retirement from the FBI in May of 1976, Robert accepted

an appointment as Secretary to the Board of the Cincinnati Museum

Association and Business Manager of the Cincinnati Art Museum.



Since his retirement from the Art Museum in 1983, he moved to

Rome, Ga. to help his younger son, Greg, establishe Kid's World

Learning Center.



From 1984 to his death, he served on the Board of William-Lynn-James,

a public policy firm in Washington, D.C., and Indianapolis, Ind.

He further provided consulting services to a number of business

clients and the Floyd Medical Center.



He was also known as ``Grandpa Bob'' at Kid's World Learning

Center.



He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his son, Garry J. Peterson

and his wife, Terri; his son, Gregory T. Petersen and his wife,

Anne; and two grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. Sr. and Olina

(Christensen) Petersen; two sisters, Edith Desillier and Geneva

Silken; and one brother, Thomas Petersen.



A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7,

1996, at Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home, 408 Shorter Ave.,

Rome, Ga. 30161.



In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be

made to The American Diabetes Association, 512 Avenue A., Rome,

Ga. 30165, or The American Council of the Blind, 1-800-424-8666.



Arrangements are being made for Robert's return to Iowa, at

his request.

Dora Mills, 77, of Osage, died Monday (Aug. 5, 1996) at the

Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Champion

Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Shelton of the New Convenant

Fellowship officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery,

Marshalltown.



Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion

Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to

7:30 p.m. There will be further visitation after 8 a.m. Thursday.



Dora Mills was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Marshalltown.



Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Hinders of Osage and

Betty Hazel of Liscomb; one son, Jim Parsons of Tacoma, Wash.;

10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-

grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother

and three sons.

George W. Ostercamp, 67, formerly of Britt, die Monday (July

22, 1996) in Mesa, Ariz.



Memorial services will be held graveside at 1:30 p.m. Thursday,

Aug. 8, at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey

officiating.



Ewing Funeral Home, Britt, is in charge of arrangements.



George was born Jan. 5, 1929, to Herman (Tony) and Greta (Goodnow)

Ostercamp.



He was raised on a farm near Wesley and attended school in the

Wesley area.



George farmed many years in the Britt area before moving to

Arizona. He was self-employed until his retirement.



He is survived by his children, Jan Drabek and her husband,

Larry; Mike and his wife, Rhonda; Gary and his wife, Ann; and

Denise Anderson and her husband, Gerald, all of Britt; and Kevin

and his wife, Carol, of Sullivan, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and

one great-grandchild; sisters, Marie Hiscocks, Bonnie Weiland

and Joyce Heen; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Ostercamp; and many

nieces and nephews; along with his special Arizona family, Don

and Bobbie Wiles and children.



George was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ida

and Ila; and one brother, Herman.

Ronald J. Stauner, 58, died on Monday (July 15, 1996) of a heart

attack in a Florida Hospital.

MASON CITY



Mark G. Holt, 70, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of Mason City,

died Tuesday (July 30, 1996) at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville.



He was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Seattle, Wash.



He served three years in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War

II.



After serving in the Coast Guard, he attended Oskosh State

Teachers College where he received a degree in banking and finance.



In 1963 he retired from banking and moved  to Postville, Iowa,

where he raised horses.



In 1968 he moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, and purchased Fermented

Products Inc., Mason City, Iowa, which he operated for 26 years.

He retired from Fermented Products in 1994 and moved to Titusville,

Fla.



He enjoyed raising and training horses, flying and boating.



Survivors include two sons, Dana Holt of Muldrow, Okla., and

Mark Holt, of Mason City, Iowa; and five grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary P. Holt, and two

daughters.



Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, in Rogers,

Ark.

Randy Ray Wicks, 41, of Newhall, Calif., formerly of Belmond,

passed away Saturday (Aug. 3, 1996) at his home.



Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at

the California Arts College, Valencia, Calif.



Visitation will be held from noon until 7 p.m. today and from

9 a.m. until noon on Thursday at the Santa Clarita Mortuary,

Newhall, Calif.



There will be services held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996,

at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. James

Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery,

Belmond, Iowa.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Dugger-Ewing

Funeral Home, Belmond.



Randy was born Oct. 30, 1954, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Raymond

E. and Imogene Cook Wicks.



He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church

in Kanawha, Iowa.



He graduated from Belmond High School in 1973.



Randy attended college at the California Institute of Arts and

graduated in 1980 with a B.F.A. degree in film and animation.



Randy served as the editorial cartoonist for the Newhall Signal

for 18 years. He won 18 state and national awards, and was the

author/illustrator of three books.



He was a member of the Los Angeles Press Club, lectured at UCLA,

and served on various community boards.



He considered the Santa Clarita area his ``2nd'' home.



Randy is survived by his fiancee, Kiza Stratton; his parents,

Ray and Imogene of Belmond; three sisters, Cindy King and her

husband, Jim, of Johnstown, Pa.; Connie Wicks of Iowa City, Iowa;

and Chris Huffman and her husband, Joel, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa;

three nephews, Jeff King, Justin and Jordan Huffman; one niece,

Amy King; five aunts, Marion Harrington of Minneapolis, Minn.,

Maxine Maland and her husband, Paul, of Charles City, Iowa; LaVonne

Norbush and her husband, Ben, of Brentwood, Calif.; Carole Basler

of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Iola Wicks of Chandler, Ariz.;

one uncle, Everett Wicks of Kanawha, Iowa; and a host of friends.



Randy was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane; and his

brother, Tommy Ryan.

Jennifer Lynn Steinlicht was born Jan. 22, 1980, in Britt.



Survivors include her mother, Sue Steinlicht of Britt; two sisters,

Susan Steinlicht of Des Moines, Iowa, and her twin sister, Anna

Steinlicht at home; one brother, Jason Steinlicht at home; and

maternal grandfather Milton Smith.



She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.

Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery with military rites

by the St. Ansgar American Legion Post #358.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Champion

Funeral Home, Osage, and one hour prior to services at the church

on Friday.



Floyd L. Dahlke was born Jan. 12, 1913.



Survivors include his wife, Elinor of Osage; three daughters,

Bertha Moravec of 0watonna, Minn., Barbara Strain of Kasson,

Minn., and Kathryn Dahlke of Osage; one son, LeRoy Dahlke of

Riceville; two brothers Carl Dahlke of Dallas, Wis., and Edward

Dahlke of Tomah, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one infant

brother, two sisters and one infant sister.

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 7 p.m. scriptural

prayer service, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30

p.m.

Wendell A. Wells was born Nov. 15, 1903, in Fairmont, Minn.,

son of George and Theresa (Arndt) Wells. He married Sidonia A.

Exner on June 23, 1923, in Mankato, Minn.



Wendell grew up in Fairmont, Minn., and graduated from Fairmont

High School in 1921. He attended Mankato Commercial College.

His career was spent working for Standard Oil (now Amoco). He

transferred to Des Moines for six years until his retirement

in 1961 after 40 years of service.



He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Vincent

DePaul Society, and he was a 50-year member of Knights of Columbus

where he served as treasurer for a few years.



Survivors include four children, Douglas Wells and his wife,

Elsie, of St. Paul, Minn.; Gay Schneider and her husband, Carl,

of rural Manly; Mark Wells and his wife, Edith, of Mason City;

and Thomas Wells and his wife, Joyce, of Leavenworth Kan.; nine

grandchildren: Debi Sinna, Cynthia Krasky, Gerald Wells, Brian

Wells, and Gregory Wells, all of St. Paul, Minn., Carol Forbus

of Inola, Okla., Pauline Berzins, of Antioch, Tenn., John Schneider

of West St. Paul, Minn., and Rhonda Nicholson of Mason City;

and 23 great-grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his wife, Sidonia, in April of 1970;

a grandson, Christopher Wells, in November of 1983; his daughter,

K. Jane Schneider in February of 1996; a sister and a brother.

The Rev. John Gilbert, 81, of Osage, died Tuesday (Aug. 6,

1996) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.



Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United

Church of Christ, with the Rev. Pam Webb and the Rev. Herschel

Hawf officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Champion

Funeral Home, and one hour before services at the church.



John Gilbert was born July 30, 1915, on a farm northeast of

Osage.



Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Osage; one sister, Ona

Butler of Rudd; and two brothers, Max Gilbert of Russiaville,

Ind., and Lawrence Gilbert of Osage.



He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three

brothers.

Millicent ``Milli'' Negomir Chorak, 77, of 824 S. Van Buren

Ave., died Monday (Aug. 5, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice

Inpatient Unit.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Greek

Orthodox Church of Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S. W., with

the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Memorial

Park Cemetery.



There will be visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Trisagion prayer

service at 5 p.m.



Memorials may be given to the Millicent ``Milli'' Chorak Memorial

Fund.



Millicent Chorak was born April 5, 1919, in Mason City, the

daughter of Nickolas and Amelia (Knezevich) Negomir.



Millie attended and graduated from Mason City High School in

1937 and went on to attend the Chicago Art Institute for two

years.



Milli returned to Mason City to work as an artist as well as

interior decorator. She was involved in the Carriage House and

Jolly Troll restaurants for a short period of time. Milli was

well known for her painted murals which could be found in several

restaurants, the Athenian, and businesses.



She also enjoyed oil painting and ice sculpturing.



Milli was a member of the Pilot Club.



Survivors include one son, Charles Chorak and his wife, Elizabeth,

of Rock Hills, S.C.; and one daughter, Johanna A. Chorak of Mason

City; sisters, Donna C. Hitzhusen and husband, John, of Charles

City, Mary C. Turner and her husband, Larry, of Winter Park,

Fla., and Sophie N. Smith and her husband, Clyde, of Charles

City; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Rosalind, Meilis and Nikolai;

and many nieces and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Martin Leo

Chorak in 1975; and two brothers, Daniel and Nickolas Chuick.

Memorial graveside services, for the Rev. Wilbur G. Hassebrock,

82, of Delray Beach, Fla., will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,

Aug. 10, 1996. Assemble at the First Presbyterian Church, Lakota,

at 11 a.m. and then proceed to the Maple Hill Cemetery for services.



The Rev. Hassebrock died on Sunday (June 16, 1996).

AUSTIN, Minn.



Virgil Thorson, 77, of Austin, Minn., died Wednesday (Aug.

7, 1996) at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, Austin, Minn.



Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's

Lutheran Church, Austin. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Worlein's

Funeral Home, Austin, and from 2:30 p.m. until time of services

on Friday at the church.



Virgil Thorson was born on June 21, 1919, in Grand Meadow, Minn.



He was raised in Grand Meadow, where he went to school.



In 1940, Virgil moved with his parents to LeRoy, Minn., where

he farmed with his father.



In 1945, he moved to Austin, Minn., where he worked for the

city of Austin.



He was united in marriage to Marie Norris on Aug. 30, 1957.

They lived in Austin for about six years before moving to Rose

Creek, Minn., where they operated the Rosebowl Cafe for a few

years.



Bowling was one of his greatest loves and he belonged to numerous

bowling leagues. He loved to go dancing, and traveling around,

visiting with friends and relatives. One of his greatest enjoyments

was playing cards with his many friends.



Left to cherish his memory are two step-daughters, Dorothy Witt

and her husband, Delbert, of Mason City, and Claudelle Tiedemann

and her husband, Bill, of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Chip

Piper and his wife, Debbie and their children, Ryan and Erin,

of Decorah; Devin Piper and his wife, Patsy, and their children,

Kyle and Megan, of Nora Springs, Dodie Wilkins and her husband,

Alan, and their children, Shawn and Nicole, of Nora Springs;

Patrick Piper and his wife, Tracy, and their children, Alyssa

and Brittany, of Mason City; Jenni Comito and her husband, Mark,

and their son, Jacob, of Des Moines; Matthew Piper and his wife,

The Rev. Joseph R. Hestenes, 85, of Northwood, a pastor of

the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, died Wednesday (Aug.

7, 1996) at  North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services wil be 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church

in Northwood with the Rev. Mark Bents and the Rev. David Wall

officiating.



Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Conner Colonial

Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service

time on Monday at the church.



The family of the Rev. Joseph R. Hestenes has requested that

memorial contributions be made to the Lutheran Theological Seminary

in St. Paul, Minn., or to the First Lutheran Church in Northwood

in his memory.



Funeral services also will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at  Norway

Lutheran Church in Wind Lake, Wis., with the Rev. Allen Wahl

officiating. Burial will be in the Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery.



Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the

church on Tuesday. The Mealy-Koenig Funeral Home, Waterford,

Wis., is in charge of those arrangements.



The Rev. Joseph R. Hestenes was born on Nov. 14, 1910, in Thor,

Iowa, a son of the Rev. Jacob and Carie (Silrum) Hestenes.



He received his education in the Waterford, Wis., school system,

graduating from Waterford High School. He also received his bachelor

of arts degree in 1932 at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.,

and his bachelor of theology degree at the Luther Theological

Seminary in 1935.



He was united in marriage to Luella Halverson on June 15, 1935,

at the Old Muskego Lutheran Church (now the Norway Lutheran Church).



During his ministry, he served parishes which include, multiple

Lutheran parishes in Bigfork, Mont., from 1935 until 1939, Hope

Lutheran Church in Bozeman, Mont., from 1939 until 1944, Central

Lutheran Church in Edgerton, Wis., from 1944 until 1961, Atonement

Lutheran Church in Muskego, Wis., from 1961 until 1964, First

Lutheran Church in Janesville, Wis., from 1964 until 1967, and

Blanchardville and York Memorial Lutheran in Blanchardville,

Wis., from 1967 until 1975. He was also a visitation pastor at

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waupun, Wis., from 1975 until 1987.



Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Stevens Point,

Wis., where he continued to minister in the surrounding parishes.



He and his wife, Luella, moved to the Maple Court Apartments

in Northwood in April of 1995.



In 1959, he authored a book titled, ``It's All in the Family,''

and also wrote devotions for several years for the Lutheran Herald

and Christ In Our Home devotional.



Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Luella Hestenes of Northwood;

two daughters, Leila Gangstad and her husband, Lowell, of Northwood,

and Judy Knutson and her husband, the Rev. Ken Knutson, of Stevens

Point, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Sandra Hess and her husband,

Gary, of Dexter, Mich., Lori Kendall and her husband, David,

of Chanhassen, Minn., Julie Grotnes and her husband, Matthew,

of West Des Moines, Kari Johnson and her husband, Jeff, of West

Des Moines, Brian Knutson and his wife, Holly, of Monroe, Wis.,

Nathan Knutson and his wife, Michele, of Minneapolis, Minn.,

and Kaia Knutson of Minneapolis; 10 great-grandchildren, Alex

and Abby Hess, Emily and Elsa Kendall, Sam and Ben Grotnes, Tyler

Johnson and Elizabeth, Hanna, and Madeline Knutson; as well as

other relatives and friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin sister, Margaret;

a sister, Harda (Rev. Nels) Magelssen; and two brothers, Dr.

Erling Hestenes, and Leonard Hestenes.

Grant Charles Cornwell was born April 12, 1931, in Iowa City,

the son of Charles Edward and Eileen (Brown) Cornwell.



He moved to Mason City with his parents at the age of 5  days

and was raised in Mason City, where he graduated from Mason City

High School.



He was a graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelor's

degree in business.



He was united in marriage to Suzanne Pierce in 1953 in Mason

City.



He was in the United States Army during the Korean War.



They moved to Des Moines in 1962 from Mason City.



He worked as a sales representative for UARCO, Inc. (Business

Forms), retiring in 1996.



He was an avid fisherman.



Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Cornwell of Des Moines;

his mother, Eileen Cornwell of West Des Moines; two daughters,

Dr. Ann Kooiker and her husband, Dr. Kevin Kooiker, of Big Lake,

Minn., and Kay Cornwell-Wessels and her husband, Dr. Jim Wessels,

of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Ben, Ruth and Chad Kooiker

of Big Lake, Minn.; one brother, Tom Cornwell, and his wife,
