Vernon Park

MASON CITY  



Vernon Park, 76, of 1504 N. Jefferson Ave., died Tuesday (April

9, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East following a motor

vehicle accident.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Chapel, 123 Second St. S.E., with Tom

Gosser of the Fifth Street Church of Christ officiating. Interment

will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral

chapel and will contine one hour prior to services on Friday.



Vernon was born on Dec. 11, 1919, at Garner, the son of Rikus

and Sara (Van Hueson) Park.



He graduated from the Ventura High School.



He served his country in the United States Army as a quartermaster

joining in 1942 at Mason City and was honorably discharged from

Camp Young in California.



He then spent all of his life farming near Rockwell.



He was united in marriage to Bernice Lorraine Carrot on Oct.

12, 1968, in Rockwell.



He retired in November of 1975 when they moved to Mason City.



He was a member of the Clausen Warden Post of the American Legion

and a social member of the Gallagher Post in Rockwell and the

AmVets.



He also formerly served on the town council in Rockwell, and

was a member of the Mason City Moose Lodge.



He spent many hours fishing in the area and was always willing

to play cards.



Vernon is survived by his wife, Lorraine Park of the Hampton

Care Center; one daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Sallie) Ubben of Chapin;

one son, Richard Hansen and his wife, Judy, of Valjo, Calif.;

two brothers and their wives, Donald Park of Mission, Texas,

and Roy Park of Rockwell; six stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-

grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lettie

Rosenau.

Estelle Ann Barnett, 85, of Manly, died Saturday (April 6,

1996) at the Manly Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Bride

Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. David

Olson of  Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly officiating. Burial

Arthur J. Nash

CHARLES CITY



Arthur J. Nash, 90, Charles City, died Saturday (April 13,

1996) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First

Congregational United Church of Christ, 502 North Jackson St.,

Charles City, with the Rev. Jack L. Ivey, officiating.  Burial

will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak.



Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.  The family will receive friends

from 6 to 8 p.m.



Arthur John Nash was born July 17, 1905 in rural Burr Oak.



Survivors include his wife, Doris of Charles City; two sons,

Rev. Arthur Nash and his wife, Linda of LeRoy, Minn. and Donald

Nash and his wife, Maurine of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Gwenyth

and her husband, J.C. Tangen of Charles City; one sister, Marian

Wood of Naples, Fla.; ten grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.



He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, and a

grandson.

CRYSTAL LAKE



Sadie M. Huisinga, 83, of Crystal Lake, died Saturday (April

13, 1996) at Prairie View Apartments, Garner.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woden Christian

Reformed Church with the Rev. Gerald DeVries officiating.  Burial

will be in Crystal Lake Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ewing Funeral

Chapel, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.



Sadie M. Huisinga was born January 10, 1913 in Forest City.



She is survived by two daughters, Rosalie Huisinga Norem of

Arlington, Va., and Sylvia Severson of Minneapolis, Minn.; one

sister, Opal Hamilton of Garner; three grandchildren; and one

great-grandchild.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother.

Harold Thomas, 58, 3365 Dancer Ave., Osage, died Saturday

(April 13, 1996) at Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center.



A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday

at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.



Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.



Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

Marie J. Schalekamp

MASON CITY



Marie J. Schalekamp, 91, of 302  Second St. N.E., died Thursday

(April 11, 1996), at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.



Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First

United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Charles

Q. Wallace officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Sioux

Center.



Marie was born Aug. 24, 1904 in Sioux Center to Henry James

and Jennie (Vander Linden) Schalekamp.  She graduated from Sioux

Center High School in 1922, then attended Central College, Pella,

receiving her B.A. and graduated Magna Cum Laude in dramatic

speech and oratory debate.  She graduated from State University

of Iowa in 1939 with her M.A. degree.  She first taught in rural

school at Sioux Center for two years and taught in public school

at Essex for seven years.  She taught in public school and community

college at Red Oak for 14 years.  She taught at NIACC for 21

years and after her retirement, taught part time at Newman High

School for four years.  While attending the University of Denver,

she co-authored a text book, ``Communicating Effectively.''



She was a member of First United Methodist Church; We Serve

God Circle; Delta Kappa Gamma; Browning Study Club, Monday Club,

AAUW (1985 Name Grant Honoree); Toast Mistress Club (International

speaker for Toast Mistress Club); PEO Chapter DZ; and life member

of ISEA and NEA.



She served on the Executive Committee of UMW, Executive Board

Retired Teachers, boards of YWCA and AFS, and also served on

some commissions in the church until 1987.



She taught Bible Study at Heritage Care Center and RISE Program

at Madison School; delivered Meals on Wheels, was a volunteer

for rentals (Charles H. MacNider Museum), and had programs at

Good Shepherd.



Survivors include her sister, Bernice Bosveld and husband, Lou

of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lucille Schalekamp of Sioux Center;

five newphews, Roger Bosveld of Egypt, John Bosveld of Dubuque,

James Bosveld of Columbus, Ohio, Donald Schalekamp of Des Moines,

and Bill Schalekamp of Kansas City; and one niece, Mary Schalekamp

Post, of Hudson, Wisc.

Herbert Hewitt

OSAGE



Herbert Hewitt, 77, of Osage, died Saturday (April 13, 1996)

at Mitchell County Regional Health Center.  Funeral services

will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church,

Mitchell, with the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis officiating.  Burial

will be in Osage Cemetery, with military rites at the grave by

VFW Post 7920 of Osage.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Champion

Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour prior to services

at the church on Thursday.



Herbert was born Sept. 1, 1918 at Mallard.



He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Osage; one daughter,

Karen Hipp and her husband, Steve of Rantoul, Ill.; four sons,

Ronald Hewitt of Pflugerville, Texas, Mike Hewitt and his wife,

Deb of Round  Rock, Texas, CWO3 Melvin Hewitt and his wife, Penny

of Bremerton, Wash., and Dale Hewitt and his wife, Karen of Minne-

apolis, Minn.; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his adoptive parents,

one son, and one daughter.
