MASON CITY  



Alfred G. Boehmer, 81, died Tuesday (April 2, 1996) surrounded

by family at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.



A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family

Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave.  Interment will be in Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery.



Visitation will be held after 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton

Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., where other

arrangements are incomplete.

James F. `Bert' Frasch

GREENE  



James F. ``Bert'' Frasch, 79, of 2355 260th St., died Monday

(April 1, 1996) at his residence after suffering a fall from

the hay loft of his barn.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.

Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Walter Brunkan, pastor,

officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.



Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton

Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.  There will be

a Scriptural wake service at 8:15 p.m. Sister Jeannine Kuhn,

pastoral minister, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles

City, will officiate.  Visitation will continue one hour prior

to services at the church on Saturday.



James Francis ``Bert'' Frascht was born April 9, 1917, in rural

Greene, the son of Matthew and Kathryn (Kohlhaas) Frascht.  He

attended school at St. Mary's Academy of Roseville, rural Marble

Rock.  Mr. Frascht was a lifelong farmer on the family farm in

rural Greene, which was a Century Farm in the state of Iowa.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, and

the Floyd County Farm Bureau.



Living family members include two sisters, Marie Kay and her

husband, Clarence, of Charles City, and Mrs. Ellen Schrage of

Osage; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers,

Leo, Bernard, Louis and Joseph Frascht.

Julia Hunchis

OSAGE  



Julia Hunchis, 79, of Osage, died Wednesday (April 3, 1996)

at her home.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the United

Methodist Church with the Rev. Clark Christian officiating. 

Burial will be in Osage Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Champion

Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at

the church on Monday.



Julia Spaanum Hunchis, the daughter of Carl and Laura (Johnson)

Spaanum was born May 27, 1916, in Osage.  She graduated from

Osage High School and continued her education at Cornell College.

Ill health caused her to return to her Osage home.  She found

employment at Burns Insurance Agency where she worked as a bookkeeper

until her marriage.  Julia married Fred Hunchis in 1951 and later

adopted his four children.  She then became the bookkeeper for

The Hunchis Cattle Company.  Julia was a life member of the United

Methodist Church, and an active member of the Naomi Circle. 

It was only recently that she gave up the position as treasurer.

She was a 50 year member of Chapter AW of P.E.O.  Julia enjoyed

golf, playing bridge and listening to the big band sounds.  She

was an avid sports fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago

Bulls.  She was keenly interested in her home town and was looking

forward to the return of RAGBRAI and the running of the Olympic

Torch through Osage.  Julia took great pride in the varied activities

of her grandchildren and would clip articles about them from

the newspaper.



Survivors include her children and their spouses: Marianne Reynolds

and her husband, William; Kathleen Holden and her husband, Lowell,

all of Burnsville, Minn.; John Hunchis and his wife, Carol, of

Clear Lake, and William Hunchis and his wife, Bettie, of Edina,

Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.



Pallbearers will be the grandsons: John Reynolds, Patrick Reynolds,

William Fred Hunchis, John Hunchis, Jordan Hunchis, Michael Skobba

and Daryl Skobba Jr.  Honorary pallbearers are the granddaughters:

Mary Kathleen Schneider, Julie Colgaard, Kimberly Kay Hunchis,

Frances Maakestad, Ann Mary Taylor, Molly Skobba, Dorothy Skobba

and Teresa Kern.



Julia was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jean;

her husband, Fred; a grandson, William Reynolds Jr.; and a sister-

in-law, Dorothy Hunchis.



The family gratefully acknowledges her many friends, especially

Robert Kasel, Vera Northrup and Carolyn Johnson.

MASON CITY  



Oswald T. Bailey, 86, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Wednesday (April

3, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a brief

illness.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the

First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the

Rev. Merlin Ackerson and the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Lunch will be held in the East Room following committal services.



Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and also at the church

one hour prior to services on Saturday.



Oswald T. Bailey was born Jan. 6, 1910, in Wakita, Okla., the

son of Harrison and Rosella (Sears) Bailey.  His family moved

to Mason City in 1912 where he attended Mason City schools. 

He married Marie Hansen in June of 1931.  She died Dec. 7, 1961.

In 1964 he married Elvera Johnson of Sioux City.  She died in

November of 1992.  Ossie worked for International Harvester for

37 years.  He was transferred from Mason City to Sioux City in

1940 where he served as service manager for over 30 years.  In

1992 he returned to Mason City to live at the Manor.  Ossie was

a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City for 52 years.

Since his return to Mason City, he had been a faithful member

of First United Methodist Church.  In Sioux City he was a member

of the Landmark Lodge, the Shrine, Consistory and a member of

SCORE.



Survivors include one daughter, Laurine Paule and her husband,

Milton, of Burlington; one grandson, John Paule and his wife,

Shari, of West Des Moines, and their children, Jessica and Austin;

one granddaughter, Anne Paule Hall and her husband, John, of

Omaha, Neb., and their children, James and Bill; one brother,

Donald Bailey of Bethesda, Md.; three sisters, Elizabeth Little

of De Soto, Texas, Goldie Boyd and Beulah Eppens, both of Mason

City; a niece, Wanda Harris of Mason City; and numerous other

nieces and nephews.



He was also preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Laura

Harris; and four brothers, Melvin, Gail, Lester and Harold.

LITTLE CEDAR  



Lorna O. Conrad, 78, formerly of Little Cedar, died Thursday

(April 4, 1996) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center,

Osage.



Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Little

Cedar United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating.

Burial will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery.



Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Champion

Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour prior to services

at the church on Monday.



Lorna Opal Conrad was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Emmetsburg.



Survivors include two sons, Larry Conrad of Peosta, and Randy

Conrad of Osage; three sisters, Zeni Helling of Crete, Ill.;

Viola Schuchart of Yuma, Ariz., and Mildred Coonradt of Osage;

one brother, Vincent Bucknam of Crestline, Ohio; and three grand-

children.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother

and one sister.

Ellamae Thomas

CLEAR LAKE  



Ellamae Thomas, 86, of 400 Highway 18 West, died Wednesday (April

3, 1996) at Oakwood Care Center.



Following cremation at Memorial Park Crematory, memorial services

are being planned for a later date.  St. John's Baptist Church

will be officiating and inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph

Cemetery.  Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second

St. S.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.



Ellamae was born on May 2, 1909, in St. Maurice, La.



Survivors include three brothers, Jay Jackson of East Troy,

Wis.; David Jackson Jr. of Cedar Rapids, and Andrew Jackson of

Minneapolis, Minn.; and one sister, Odella Nichols of Cedar Rapids.



She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother

and two sisters.

Flora E. Magnuson, 96, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday

(April 4, 1996) at Edina Care Center.



Private graveside services will be held in Lakewood Cemetery,

Minneapolis.  Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, Minneapolis, is

in charge of arrangements.



Survivors include one nephew, Glenn Magnuson of Tennessee; and

one brother-in-law, Al Magnuson of St. Louis Park, Minn.



She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon.

Elmina Ellen Mae O'Rourke

EDINA, Mo.  



Elmina Ellen Mae O'Rourke, 79, of Edina, passed away Monday

(April 1, 1996) at the Knox County Nursing Home.



Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Riverside

Cemetery in Rockford, Iowa.



Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Schumburg

Funeral Home, Rockford, Iowa, before proceeding to the cemetery.



Elmina Ellen Mae O'Rourke was born March 22, 1917, in Stiles,

Pa.  She was united in marriage to Edmond William ``Mike'' O'Rourke

on March 5, 1945, in Mason City, Iowa.  He preceded her in death

on Oct. 13, 1978.  Mr. and Mrs. O'Rourke moved to a farm north

of Hurdland, Mo., in 1964, where they were engaged in farming.

They retired from farming in the early 1970s.  Mrs. O'Rourke

had lived at Edina for the past number of years.



She is survived by one son, Dennis O'Rourke of Hurdland, Mo.;

one daughter, Sharon Ridings and her husband, Don, of Seattle,

Wash.; and three grandchildren, Corey Ridings, Peter Ridings

and Shawn O'Rourke.

Doris H. Shultz, 81, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died Monday

(April 1, 1996) at the Heritage Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Major Erickson

Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Karl Shiltz

of the United Methodist Church, Titonka, officiating. Interment

will be in the Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.



Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service today

at Major Erickson Funeral Home.



Memorials may be given to the Doris H. Shultz Memorial Fund.



Doris was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Germania, Iowa, the daughter

of William and Selena (Perry) Stott.



She attended and graduated from Titonka High School in 1932.



Doris married Bernard Shultz on Oct. 15, 1947.



She had lived in Des Moines from 1939 until 1991, when she moved

to Mason City to live at the Willows.



Survivors include three sisters, Julia Stott and Maxine Stott,

both of Titonka, and Vivian Valley of Carterville, Ill.; and

one brother, Howard Stott of Irvine, Calif.



She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard,

in 1971; an infant son, Gary Steven; three sisters; and one brother.

Esther Tillman, 75, of Kankakee, Ill., formerly of Clarion,

died Thursday (April 4, 1996) at Kankakee Terrace.

of Christ in Clarion, with Mark Young officiating. Burial will

be in Evergreen Cemetery.



Schreffler Funeral Home, Kankakee, Ill,. is in charge of arrangements.



Esther Hockenson was born on Dec. 17, 1920, in Winnebago County,

the third child of Albert and Hannah (Strom) Hockenson. 



She was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. O.R. Sletten at Salem

Lutheran Church, Lake Mills.



She was a graduate of Lake Mills High School in 1939 and teacher

training in Cedar Falls.



She taught school at Storby Country School in 1939 and 1940

and at No. 3 Bristle in 1940 and 1941.



Esther was united in marriage to Daryl Tillman of Clarion on

April 12, 1941. To this union were born three children, Daryl

Eugene, Rhoda Marie and Curtis James.



Blessed be her memory.



She is survived by her sons, Daryl Tillman and Curtis Tillman

and his wife, Ann; six grandchildren; one sister, Violet Monson

of Forest City; two sisters-in-law, Lola Hockenson of Woodville,

Wis., and Gladys Woodly of Rowan; and one brother-in-law, Richard

Tillman and his wife, Darlene, of Rowan.



She was preceded in death death by her parents; her husband,

Daryl; and her daughter, Rhoda; one sister, Irene; and one brother,

Lloyd Hockenson.

Audrey Fern Swisher

MANLY  



Audrey Fern Swisher, 70, of Manly, died Tuesday (April 2, 1996)

at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.



Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel United

Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. James Poulsen officiating.

Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.



Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday with a public Eastern

Star service by the Heather Hill Chapter O.E.S. #494, of Manly,

at 7 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.

Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time at

the church on Tuesday.



Audrey Fern Swisher was born on Nov. 5, 1925, in Manly, the

daughter of Henry and Pearl (Hogan) Plath.



She attended and received her education in the Manly School

System, graduating from the Manly High School.



She also attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar

Falls, graduating in 1946. After completing her education, she

taught school for a short time in Postville.



She was united in marriage to Roger L. Swisher on Aug. 22, 1947,

in Manly. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1995.



After their marriage, they lived in Clear Lake, and Fargo, N.D.,

before moving back to a farm west of Manly where they farmed

for several years.



Since 1985, she was the owner and operator of the Ceramic Pour

Shoppe at her home in rural Manly.



She enjoyed ceramics, flowers, traveling, reading and was very

active in several church organizations.



She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Entre-Nous

Church Circle, and was the Worthy Matron and member of the Heather

Hill Chapter of the O.E.S. #494, former activity director of

the Manly Care Center and the Senior Citizens Center, all in

Manly.



Survivors include three sons, Rodney Swisher of Broomfield,

Colo.; Alan Swisher and his wife, Renee, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and

Randy Swisher and his wife, Pat, of Bowdoinham, Maine; 10 grand-

children; as well as other relatives and friends.



Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents.

of Cedar Rapids; and one brother, Art Boehmer of Stacyville.



He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one stepdaughter,

five sisters and three brothers.

Doris C. Sanford, 91, of Nora Springs, died Friday (April 5,

1996) at the Nora Springs Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First

Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye, with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur

officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Sheckler

Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, and one hour prior to services

at the church.



Doris C. Sanford was born June 2, 1904, at  Gillingham, England.



Survivors include her husband, Dale Sanford of Nora Springs;

two sons, Ronald Sanford of Mason City, and Bruce Sanford of

Carlisle; two daughters, Margaret Edwards of Marshalltown, and

Marion Reeves, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; several great-

grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, 

Leonard Butler of Charles City, and Claude Butler of Salt Lake 

City, Utah.



She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons and three

brothers.

Nile Eldred Motter

DES MOINES  



Nile Eldred Motter, 51, of 4205 S.W. Park, Des Moines, died

Wednesday (March 20, 1996) in Des Moines.



A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (April 13,

1996) at Cornell College in the Allee Chapel, in Mount Vernon.

There will be a private burial of the cremains.



Hamilton Funeral Home, Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.



Nile Motter was born in Mason City.



He had lived in Des Moines, as well as Galesburg, Ill., Colorado

and Arizona.



He had worked for Marriott Corporation in management.



In Evanston, Ill., he had worked for the attorney general's

office and also earned a teaching certificate and taught in Illinois.



He was district commissioner for the Eagle Scouts and received

the highest scouting honor, ``Order of the Arrow.''



He also owned a Ski Resort, Lone Pine Inn, in Grand Lake, Colo.



He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a graduate of Cornell

College, and Kent Law School.



Survivors include one sister, Dana Motter of Villisca; three

brothers, Henry Eugene Motter Jr. of Mason City; Noel Motter

of Marion, and Jack Motter of Flippen, Ariz.; and six nieces

and nephews.

Max R. Boulton, Sr., 66, of 709 S. Massachusetts, died Saturday

(April 6, 1996) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer

Lutheran Church, 301 S. Main, Ventura, with the Rev. Daird W.

Korth officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer

Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and one hour prior to services

at the church.



Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, Hospice

of North Iowa or the Max R. Boulton, Sr. memorial fund.



Max R. Boulton, Sr. was born Dec. 11, 1929 at Columbus Junction,

a son of Frank and Bonnie (Hopkins) Boulton.  He married Marilyn

Morse on Nov. 17, 1984 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura.



Max worked at Stockberger Transfer Company, Mason City, for

29 years, retiring in 1991.  He enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles,

gardening, and super nintendo.  He won many awards for rifle

marksmanship.



He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura; Teamsters, 

l, Mason City; and was a former member of the Mason City Gun

Club.



A loving father and husband, Max is survived by his wife, Marilyn

Boulton, Mason City; four sons, Michael R. Boulton and friend,

Delores, Ft. Worth, Texas; Mark R. Boulton and friend, Donna,

Kalamazoo, Mich.; Matthew R. Boulton, Ft. Levenworth, Kan.; Max

Matilda ``Tillie'' Marie Theresa Rolands, the daughter of Julius

and Otellia Teresa Amelia (Callies) Rockow, was born Sept. 14,

1901 on a farm near Williams.  She attended the rural schools

of Hamilton County.  In Sept. 1918, she was married to John Myron

Behrens at Williams.  They farmed in Hamilton and Wright counties

for several years.  They then moved to Garner where her husband

worked for Ed C. Buntenbach and the Garner Shipping Association

for approximately 35 years.



Tillie was a homemaker, famous for her pies!  She made many

a pie that was sold on sale day at the Garner Livestock Sales

Barn.  After her husband's death in 1975, Tillie moved to Prairie

View Apartments the following year.  On Sept. 30, 1980, she was

married to Thomas Gerhart Rolands at the Little Brown Church,

Nashua.   They continued to live at Prairie View Apartments.

After Tom's death on July 16, 1992, Tillie moved to Hot Springs

to be near her daughter.



She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, L.W.M.L. and the

Prairie View Bible Study Class.  At the time of her death, Tillie

was the oldest living member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.



She is survived by her four children, Verla Weber and her husband,

Earl, of Dows; Myron Behrens, Jr. of Denver, Colo.; Glendola

Lukas of Hot Springs, Ark.; and LaVerne Behrens and his wife,

Delores, of Sebring, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren;

a sister-in-law, Agnes Rockow, of Barren, Wis.,; and many nieces

and nephews.



She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Behrens;

her second husband, Thomas Rolands; a son-in-law, Robert Lukas,

Sr.; her parents; two sisters, Clara Inman and Martha Buntenbach;

and seven brothers, Herman Rockow, Will Rockow, Ed Rockow, Eric

Rockow, Paul Rockow, Frank Rockow and John Rockow.

Alfred Boehmer was born on July 15, 1914 at North Washington,

Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Clara (Miller) Boehmer.  He attended

school there and then entered farming as his chosen vocation.

He farmed most of his life near Alma and also drove milk truck

for Simetz Trucking, hauling the milk into the Stacyville Creamery.

He later worked for IBP and his love for farming continued after

his retirement in 1973, working as a hird hand for the Hobbiebrunken

farms.  Alfred met Lucille Toinbee at Black's Cafe in Waterloo

and they were united in marriage on July 23, 1955 at Lourdes.

They honeymooned in St. Louis and their love and friendship

lasted until her death in 1987.  Alfred was a long time member

of Holy Family Catholic Church and a former member of the Farmer's

Coop in Alma.  Alfred would rather be fishing or camping than

being indoors.  He and his wife enjoyed going to Texas, California,

and Florida on camping trips.



Alfred is survived by three granddaughters, Judi Kirsch, Mrs.

Don (Diana) Kellar, and Mrs. Greg (Carol) Sheppard, all of Mason

City; two grandsons, Michael and his wife (Bev) Carolus of Madrid,

and Steven Dunlap of Manly; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-

great-granddaughter; one sister, Viola Westendorf of Cedar Rapids; 

and one brother, Art Boehmer of Stacyville.



He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one stepdaughter,

Mary Lou Eddy in May of 1995; five sisters, Elizabeth (Lizzy),

Martha, Helena, Kate, and Elnora; and three brothers, Andrew,

confirmed April 30, 1944 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason

City.  She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason

City High School in 1946.  She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone

Company and Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance.  Lea married Gene

Morische on March 19, 1951 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason

City.  After spending three years with her husband in the military

they made their home and farmed in Mitchell County.  Lea was

an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church south of Osage.

She was a part-time church organist and a member of LWML.  Lea

was a talented seamstress and a loving mother and grandmother.



The family requests memorials be made to St. John's Lutheran

Church.



Lea is survived by her husband, Gene of Nora Springs; one son,

Gary Morische of Rudd; two grandchildren, Steven Allen Morische

and Alesha Christine Morische.  Also surviving are two sisters,

June Stinehart of Mason City, and Betty Schulte and her husband,

Robert of West Des Moines; two brothers, Orville Stinehart and

Max worked at Stockberger Transfer Company, Mason City, for

29 years, retiring in 1991.  He enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles,

gardening, and super nintendo.  He won many awards for rifle

marksmanship.



He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Ventura; Teamsters,

l, Mason City; and was a former member of the Mason City Gun

Club.



A loving father and husband, Max is survived by his wife, Marilyn

Clara T. Heimdal, 94, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (April 6,

1996) at the Lake Mills Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the

Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, rural Joice, with the Rev. Elwin

Walvatne officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Lutheran Brethren

Church Cemetery.



Vistation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mittelstadt

Funral Home, with a 7 p.m. prayer service and one hour prior

to services at the church.



Clara T. Heimdal was born Feb. 28, 1902, in Mount Valley Township,

Winnebago County.



Survivors include one son, Merlyn Heimdal of Mesa, Ariz.; and

five granddaughters.



She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and

one sister.

Esther S. Bidne, 89, of Lake Mills, died Monday (April 8, 1996)

at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Emmons Lutheran Church, Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Dennis Johnson

officiating. Burial will be in Lime Creek Cemetery (stateline)

rural Emmons, Minn.



Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at  the Mittelstadt

Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services at the

church.



Esther S. Bidne was born Dec. 9, 1907, in Thor.



Survivors include one son, Maynard Bidne of Emmons, Minn; one

daughter, Pauline Osheim of Alma, Wis., eight grandchildren;

and 12 great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven brothers,

six sisters and one great-granddaughter.

Lois J. Elkin was born March 20, 1915, in Thompson.



Survivors include two sons, Morris of Chippewa Falls, Wis.,

and Wayne of Clarion; one brother, Dallas Elwood of Corwith;

and four grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers

and three sisters.

Lucille M. Kramer, 76, of Dumont, died Saturday (April 6, 1996)

at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.

Reformed Church, with the Rev. David Vanderleest of Grace Reformed

Church of Waterloo officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont

Cemetery.

Lucille M. Kramer was born Sept. 21, 1919, in Bristow.



Survivors include two sons, Craig Kramer of Libertyville, Ill.,

and Russell Kramer of Littleton; two daughters, Pamela Hays of

Santee, Calif., and Priscilla Kramer of Cedar Falls; two sisters,

Minnie Shreve of Bristow, and Mary Brown of Clarksville; nine

grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son,

one sister and one brother.

Palma J. ``Polly'' Christiansen, 88, of Northwood, died Sunday

(April 7, 1996) at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, Minn.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First

Lutheran Church Chapel, Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bents and

Rev. David Wall officiating.  Burial will be in the Sunset Rest

Cemetery, Northwood.



Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the

service at the First Lutheran Church.



Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, is in charge of arrangements.



Palma Juliette Huus was born May 20, 1907, in Silver Lake Township,

Worth County.



She is survived by her three sisters, Hannah Watkins of Chevy

Chase, Md.; Inga Swensrud and Evelyn Steele, both of Northwood.;

seven nieces and nephews; and several great and great-great-nieces

and nephews.



She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two

sisters.

Iowa, died Saturday (April 6, 1996) at Port Charlotte, Fla.

Funeral Home, 6210 N.E. Highway 65, Fridley, Minn. Burial will

be in Hillside Memorium, 2600 19th Ave. N.E., Minneapolis, Minn.



Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Miller

Funeral Home.



Dale Shaffer was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Fayette, Iowa.



He was a loving father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed

by both family and friends.



Survivors include his wife, Janice Shaffer of Spring Lake Park,

Minn.; two daughters, Diane Kratz of Coon Rapids, Minn., and

Carolyn Hansen of Shoreview, Minn.; two sons, Dennis Shaffer

of Balboa Island, Calif., and Mark Shaffer of Mason City, Iowa;

one sister, Merle and her husband, Dallas Johnson of Mason City,

Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Marge Shaffer of McKees Rocks, Pa.;

three brothers, Doyle and wife, Linda of Newport, Wash., Darrel

and his wife, Shirley of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Jerry and his

wife, Sandy, of El Paso, Texas.



He was preceded in death by two brothers, Aulden and Forrest.

Raymond L. Hughes

CHARLES CITY  



Raymond L. Hughes, 74, a resident of 500 Sprigg St., died Saturday

(April 6, 1996) at University Hospitals in Iowa City.



Funeral services for Ray ``Gov'' Hughes will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday at the First Congregational Church, 502 N. Jackson,

with the Rev. Jack Ivey officiating.



Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Elmwood Cemetery,

Waterloo, with military honors conducted by the Charles City

Ceremonial Unit.



Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser

Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., and one hour prior to services

on Thursday at the church.



Raymond Leslie Hughes was born Nov. 4, 1921, at New Hampton,

the son of Ronald and Alma Holmstrom Hughes.



He graduated in 1940 from the Waterloo West High School and

in 1966 from the State College of Iowa (University of Northern

Iowa).



On April 9, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mildred Porter

in Cedar Rapids.



Ray served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific from

1944-1946.



He grew up in the Waterloo area and was a pattern maker at the

Manning Pattern Company, and then at the John Deere Company for

17 years.



He then became an industrial arts teacher in Charles City for

20 years, retiring in 1986.



He was an active member of various education organizations and

loved teaching and working with his students.



He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Charles

City, serving as a trustee for the church; the American Legion

and Senior Citizens.



One of his favorite pastimes was model railroading, and he was

an active member of the Charles City Model Railroaders Club.



Ray picked up Genevieve Sogard and Rose Jones and took them

to church for several years and also during that time, he took

W. K. ``Bill'' Carr on errands and driving on Thursday. He 

especially enjoyed being with friends.



Living family members include his wife, Mildred, of Charles

City; one daughter and her husband, Merron and Roger Clark of

Clarksville; four sons and their wives, Richard and Mary of Adel;

Ted and Diane of Sheffield; Tom and Connie of Mesa, Ariz,. and

Paul and Juanita of Charles City; 12 grandchildren and their

spouses, Michael and Chris Markusson of Traer; Bryan and Sharon

Markusson of Clarksville; Erin and William Hughes of Adel; Amy

and Andrew Hughes of Sheffield; Shane, Casey and Cori Hughes

of Mesa, Ariz.; Kim, Kris and Adams Hughes of Charles City; three

great-grandchildren, Ashley, Alyssa and Maxwell; four stepgrand-

children, Duane, April, Troy and Ryan; and three stepgreat-grand-

children, Jessica, Sampson and Tyler; and one sister and her husband, 

Maxine and Chuck Essman of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Norman

and Arvine.

James D. Foy, 56, of 2108 Pine Tree Court, Clear Lake, died

Saturday (April 6, 1996) at home following a brief illness.



A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday

at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jerry

Kopacek officiating. Graveside services will be held at Elmwood-St.

Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Cremation will follow after the

graveside service and inurnment will take place at a later date.



Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke

Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a 7 p.m.

Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural wake service.



The family requests that memorials be made to the James D. Foy

Memorial Fund, care of Hancock County Bank and Trust Company,

175 E. Third St., Garner, Iowa 50438.



James D. Foy was born Dale Herbert Nauman in Dubuque, on Sept.

12, 1939, the son of Frank and Frances Nauman. After residing

at the St. Mary's Orphan Home in Dubuque for several years, he

and his brother, Denny, became foster sons of James L. and Ida

(Sharp) Foy of Britt. They were adopted by the Foys on May 4,

1959.



He attended grade school in Dubuque and was a graduate of Britt

High School and Hamilton Business College and later attended

classes at the University of Northern Iowa.



At the time of his death, he was employed by the Hancock County

Bank and Trust in Garner. He had previously been employed by

the Community State Bank in Clear Lake.



He was a member of the American Society of Certified Public

Accountants, Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants, Garner

Rotary Club, Clear Lake Council 7898 of the Knights of Columbus,

Monsignor Dougherty Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of

Columbus and the North Iowa Road Riders.



Survivors include his wife, Sue, of Clear Lake; two sons, Jamie

and his wife, Debra, of Mason City, and Brent Foy of Hastings,

Minn.; a daughter, Jonie Blankenship and her husband, Todd, of

Leland; two stepdaughters, Lori Peterson of Mason City, and Tami

Hershey and her husband, Todd, of Ames; six grandchildren, Crystal,

Shawn and Travis Foy of Mason City, Matthew and Michael Foy of

Manly,  and Alyssa  Blankenship of Leland; two stepgrandchildren,

Katilynn and Logan Hershey of Ames; a brother, Denny Foy and

his wife, Ruth, of Campbell, Calif.; two sisters, Rosemarie Glick

and her husband, Clifford, and Virginia Wilcox, all of Galena,

Ill.; a special aunt, Grace Chapman of Emmetsburg; his mother-in-law,

Margaret Schmolke Fangman of Clear Lake; numerous nieces and

nephews; and a foreign exchange student son, Patrick Hoffman

of Dangast, Germany.



He was preceded in death by his biological parents; his adoptive

parents; four sisters; one brother; and an uncle, LaVerne Chapman.

Helen E. Utterback, 73, of 620 Briarstone Drive, Unit 25, Mason

City, passed from this world to a better life on Saturday (April

6, 1996) at the Manly Care Center, Manly.



Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity

Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Chris

Hellevik officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.



Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Visitation will also be held one hour

prior to service time at the church on Wednesday.



Memorial may be given to the Helen E. Utterback Memorial Fund.



Helen was born on a farm near East Waterford, Pa., on Feb. 26,

1923, the daughter of Raymond and Lucy Mae (Love) Long.



After graduating from Juniata County High School, she worked

in Harrisburg in the G.R. Kinney main office.



She was united in marriage to William F. Utterback on Dec. 20,

1944.



After his discharge from the United States Army in January

of 1946, Bill, Helen and their young daughter, moved to Des Moines

where Bill completed his college education at Drake.



In 1948, they moved to Windom, Minn. After an early retirement,

they moved from Windom to the Manly Retirement Apartments and

later purchased a home in Mason City. Since 1972, they have also

maintained a winter home in Mesa, Ariz .



Helen had a great love for her family and her church. She enjoyed

playing bridge, playing golf and visiting with friends. She will

be remembered as a kind, caring individual with a strong inner

faith and strength.



Helen is survived by her loving husband of 51  years, Bill,

of Mason City; two daughters, Barbara Backhaus and her husband,

Earl, of Manly; Belinda Weber and her husband, Greg, of Montevideo,

Minn.; one son, William (Bill) K. Utterback and his wife, Kim,

of Perry; four grandchildren, Tammy, Angie, Luke and Nathan;

seven stepgrandchildren, Dorothy, Eugene, Garry, Larry, Carnie,

Katie and Tom; one great-grandson, Cameron; two stepgreat-grand-

children, Aaron and Kelly; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Long, 

East Waterford, Pa., and Gloria Heyden of Tacoma, Wash.



She also leaves behind a host of friends in Windom, Manly,

Mesa and Mason City.



She was preceded in death by her father in 1926; her mother

in 1981; and her brother, Franklin on Jan. 21, 1996.

Lemerle H. Eddy

SWALEDALE  



Graveside services to celebrate the memory of Lemerle H. Eddy

will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery,

Swaledale, with the Rev. Dan Munson officiating. Services will

be followed by a fellowship at the Swaledale Town Hall.



Mrs. Eddy died Wednesday (March 20, 1996) at Pelican, La. Lemerle

and her husband, Glenn B. Eddy, were former residents of Swaledale.



Her children requests memorials be made to the Swaledale Public

Library.

PHOENIX, Ariz. 



Joseph G. Lucido, 61, of Phoenix, and formerly of Mason City,

Iowa, died Tuesday (April 9, 1996) in Fayetteville, N.C., of

heart failure.



A memorial service for family and friends will be held in Phoenix

at a later date.



Joe was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 18, 1934. He served

in the United States Air Force.



He earned his B.S. degree from Brigham Young University in Provo,

Utah, and his M.S.W. degree from the University of Iowa.



While living in Mason City, he was a social worker for Mason

City schools and the executive director of the Migrant Action

Program for Iowa and Nebraska.



He served on numerous Mason City boards and committees including

the Mason City Park Board.



He was an active proponent of civil rights, an avid golfer

and a talented artist.



Survivors include his wife, Carmella Lucido of Phoenix; sons,

Clif Lucido, Rochester, Minn.; Scott Lucido of West Jordan, Utah;

daughters, Starla Blackburn of American Fork, Utah, and Lori

Henry of Mason City, Iowa; and Fara Lucido, of North Salt Lake

City, Utah; his former wife, Dr. Bonnie Lucido, of Highland,

Utah; a sister, Frances Lucido; a brother, John Lucido; and 13

grandchildren.



He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Floyd T. Volding, 90, a former resident of Mason City,  and

Sarasota, Fla., died Saturday (April 6, 1996) at the Capital

Region Medical Center, Southwest, Jefferson City, Mo.



Funeral services were held Monday, April 8, 1996, in the Freeman

Chapel, 915 Madison St., Jefferson City, Mo.,  with the Rev.

Stanley Duncan officiating.



Graveside services and interment will be held at 1 p.m. today

at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. David Shogren

officiating.

Lake Ozark Christian Church, Lake Ozark, Mo.



Mr. Volding was born Oct. 9, 1905, at Crystal Lake, the son

of Theodore and Ella Gopel Volding, both deceased.



He was married on May 28, 1927, to Dorothy Hanson at Clinton,

who preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 1982.



Mr. Volding attended Crystal Lake High School, Crystal Lake,

and  Mankato Business College, Mankato, Minn.



He was employed as a mailman in Mason City, for 35 years prior

to his retirement in December of 1963. In 1983, Mr. Volding moved

to Sarasota, Fla.



Mr. Volding was a member of the Mason City Masonic Lodge; a

member of the Wesley Methodist Church, Mason City; and a member

of the Brothers Club in Sarasota, Fla.



Survivors include one son, Jerry Volding of Four Seasons, Mo.;

one daughter-in-law, Margot Volding of Four Seasons, Mo.; five

grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Estelle Ann Barnett

MANLY 



Estelle Ann Barnett, 85, of Manly, died Saturday (April 6,

1996) at the Manly Care Center.



Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bride

Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. David

Olson of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly officiating. Burial

will be in the Manly Cemetery.



Estelle Ann Barnett was born on April 25, 1910, one mile south

of Manly, the daughter of farmer Soloman Watson Stratton and

school teacher Emma Caroline Penney.



Mrs. Barnett graduated from Mason City High School in 1927.

She spent one year in Chicago, Ill., studying clothing design

and other studies at the Lewis Institute of Illinois, Institute

of Technology.



As a farm wife, she was well known as a hostess, to visitors

and to guests, both and from throughout the country.



She was highly regarded for her beautiful and outstanding sewing

ability, done for both family and friends as well as her own

wardrobe.



Mrs. Barnett was a source of comfort to a number of teen-agers

and young adults, who often sought her advice, counsel and understanding.



She was also known for her ready smile and consistent words

of cheer to all.



She was united in marriage to Teauthus ``T'' Barnett on Sept.

6, 1935, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.



The late T. Barnett and Estelle Barnett farmed three miles

east of Manly, for over 30 years, before moving to town in Manly.



She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Ray, of Chicago,

Ill.; a grandson, Leslie Ray, of Iowa City, formerly of Manly;

a sister-in-law, Mrs. Cecil (Flossie) Douglas of Manly; a nephew,

Leon Barnett, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a niece, Mrs. Pearl Reevers,

of Grand Rapids, Mich.; cousins, Mae Wilson Tate and Cleota Cabell

Caldwell; four great-nieces; and several other cousins.



She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Teauthus

``T'' Barnett who died on Oct. 19, 1994.

Elfrieda was born Sept. 27, 1905, in Rock Township, Mitchell

County.



Survivors include seven sons, Donald Beyer of Mitchell; Delbert

Beyer of New Hampton; Darrell Beyer of Osage; Dale Beyer of Nora

Springs; Dennis Beyer of Fredericksburg; Dean Beyer of Mitchell

and George Beyer of Mitchell; three daughters, Dorothy Clayton

of Mitchell; Dolores Hucke of Otter Tail, Minn., and Dallas Heinzerling

of Woodard; two brothers, Roy Hackbart and Melvin Hackbart, both

of Osage; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-

great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers,

three granddaughters, one grandson and one great-grandchild.

Norma M. Redmond was born March 3, 1930, in Fertile.



Survivors include one sister, Gertrude Kiefer of Britt; three

brothers, Darrel Steuerwald of Columbia, Mo.; Arthur Steuerwald

of Knoxville, and Donnie Steuerwald of Carlisle.
