Harry B. Ott, 79, of rural Greene, died Monday (Dec. 18, 1995)
at Riverside Community Hospital, Riverside, Calif., of an apparent
stroke while visiting his son.

Dora Pihl, 91, of Woden, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 1995) at her
daughter's home northwest of Woden.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the
First Presbyterian Church, Woden, with the Rev. Roland Emond
Jr. officiating.  Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery,
Woden.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel, Woden.

Emma Dora Berdell Pihl was born Sept. 21, 1904, near Woden.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Johnson of Indianola and
Violet Price of Titonka; one son, Wilbur Pihl of Woden; four
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one grandson,
one sister and five brothers.

Arthur B. Heitz
CHARLES CITY  

Arthur B. Heitz, 77, of 2019 Willow Ave., died Monday (Dec.
18, 1995) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Eastin, pastor
of the St. John's United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial
will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Nashua.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hauser Funeral
Home, 1205 S. Main St., and from 9 a.m. until time of services
Friday at the church.

Arthur Benjamin Heitz was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Floyd County.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Heitz of Charles City,
Eugene Heitz of Greene, Richard Heitz of Charles City, and Alan
Heitz of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Susan Wenthe of Ionia;
10 grandchildren; and one sister, Grace Kielsmeier of Charles
City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

LAKE MILLS 

Harold Twito, 82, of Lake Mills, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 1995)
at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran
Church Chapel, with the Rev. Sara Akre officiating. Burial will
be Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Twito was born Sept. 4, 1913, in Lake Mills.

Survivors include one brother, Donald Twito of Lake Mills; and
four sisters, Viola Cooley and Fern Hegel, both of Lake Mills;
Myrtle Lammers of Corydon, and Mildred Groves of Forest City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four
brothers.

Wilma Oberholtzer
CHARLES CITY  

Wilma Oberholtzer, 27, 1540 Beaumont Ave., Charles City, died
Monday (Dec. 18, 1995) at home.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Valley
Mennonite Church, 320th Street, Orchard. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.
until time of services at the John Oberholtzer home.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 1204 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma M. Martin Oberholtzer was born June 21, 1968, at Ephrata,
Pa., the daughter of John and Nora Martin.

Survivors include her husband, John; two daughters, Katie and
Louella at home; two sons, Stephen and Joseph at home; her parents,
John and Nora Martin of New Holland, Pa.; eight sisters, Anna
Mary Hoover of Dundee, N.Y.; Alma Reiff of Leola, Pa.; Nora Zimmerman
of Swengel, Pa.; Lucy Zimmerman of Ephrata, Pa.; Arlene Zimmerman
of Harlteton, Pa.; Emma Martin of Charles City; Lovella Zimmerman


of New York, and Vera Mae Reiff of Elma; and three brothers,

Thelma M. Gilbert
MASON CITY 

Thelma M. Gilbert, 92, 4 Third St. N.W., died Monday (Dec.
18, 1995) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First
United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin
Ackerson and the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating. Burial will
be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to
services at the church.

Thelma M. Gilbert was born Aug. 30, 1903, in Boone, the daughter
of Alfred and Mae (McClelland) Morgan.

The family moved to Mason City in 1909 where Thelma graduated
from Mason City High School and Mason City Junior College.

She married Glenn H. Gilbert May 28, 1926, in Mason City.

Thelma worked many years at Stevensons ready to wear as head
of household items. She retired in 1957.

Thelma was an active member since 1911 of First United Methodist
Church, United Methodist Women, Leah Circle, Tuckabachee, H.E.O.
Study Club and was co-chair of the Membership & Evangelism Commission
from 1952-68.

Thelma served the YWCA, Wilson School PTA and was past district
president of the Republican Women's Club. Thelma co-sponsored
the junior high department from 1941-49 at the First United Methodist
Church.

Thelma enjoyed life to the fullest. She had many friends and
had a knack of seeing the good in anything that happened.

She is survived by sons, Donald R. Gilbert and his wife, Georgianna
of Houston, Texas, and Alfred M. Gilbert of Las Vegas, Nev.;
grandchildren, Lisa Marie Gilbert, Elizabeth Gayle Gilbert, Jennifer
Leigh Gilbert, Jay Morgan Gilbert, Scott Edward Gilbert, Cindy
Sue Clement, Grant Hunter Gilbert and Greg Alan Gilbert; and
great-grandchildren, Jay Foster Gilbert and Katie Jayne Clement.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Glenn,
in 1983.

Paul Buck Hall
CEDAR RAPIDS  

Paul Buck Hall, 90, of the Living Center West in Cedar Rapids,
formerly of Plymouth, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 1995) at Mercy Medical
Center, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bride Colonial
Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Kathy Kluis of
the Plymouth United Methodist Church officiating.  Burial will
be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel
and one hour prior to service time Saturday.

Paul Buck Hall was born June 2, 1905, in Quitman, Texas, the
son of John and Susie May (Hasting) Hall.  He attended and received
his education in the De Queen, Ark., school system.  After completing
his education, he began working for the railroad in the Texas
and Arkansas areas, moving to Mason City in the early 1920s where
he farmed northwest of Mason City in Cerro Gordo County.  He
farmed there for several years until moving to the Grafton area
and then the Manly area where he continued to farm.  He also
farmed in the Kensett area until his retirement in the mid 1970s
when he moved into Plymouth.  He was united marriage to Lois
A. Weaverling Jan. 31, 1942, at Bethany, Mo.  She preceded him
in death on Nov. 14, 1990.

He enjoyed gardening, flowers, fishing, watching old western
movies and TV shows, was an avid rodeo, Chicago Cubs baseball
and basketball fan.

He was a member of Plymouth United Methodist Church.

He is survived by three sons, John Hall and his wife, Betty,
of Lisbon; Robert Hall and his wife, Janice, of Manly, and Jerry
Hall and his wife, Barb, Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Angela
Baxa and her husband, Larry, of Lisbon; Brian Hall and his wife,
Amy, Mechanicsville; Roger Hall and his wife, Ginny, Clear Lake;
Brenda Hall, Mason City; Crista Hall, Dallas, Texas; Shayla and
Nathan Hall, both of Cedar Rapids, and Kayleen Sampson and her
husband, Ronnie, Mason City; several great-grandchildren; a half
sister, Pat Thompson and her husband, Marvin, Mason City; as
well as other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a
half brother, Luther; and two sisters, Mae Wilson and Mary Swim.

Helen R. Dann
MASON CITY  

Helen R. Dann, 76, 1116 Maple Drive, died Saturday (Dec. 16,
1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First United
Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin Ackerson
and the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating.  Burial will be in
Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

There will be no visitation; the body was cremated.  Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Helen was born Oct. 7, 1919, at Des Moines, a daughter of Frederick
J. and Amanda (Daeschner) Brecht.  She attended rural Ankeny
schools and graduated from Ankeny High School in 1937.  She worked
for Sears and Central National Bank in Des Moines as a secretary
for several years.  Helen was married to Alfred B. C. Dann on
Dec. 7, 1945, at Danville.  They  celebrated their 50th anniversary
earlier this month.  They lived in Des Moines until 1952 when
they moved to Mason City.  She worked as a school secretary for
the Mason City school system for some 18 years, retiring from
Harding Elementary in 1982.  She enjoyed her grandchildren and
will be greatly missed by them.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lydia
Circle, PEO Chapter KX, HEO Club, active member of Mended Hearts
Chapter #222, Golden Girls Sewing Club and the Auxiliary Board
of North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred B.C. Dann, Mason City;
daughters, Corinne Oleson and husband, Dean, Melbourne, Fla.;
Claudia Cooper and husband, Dennis, Mason City, and Carie Dann,
Greeley, Colo.; grandchildren, Christy Oleson, Melbourne, Fla.;
Wesley and William Cooper, Mason City; sister, Edna Heiberg,
Holland, Mich.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister in infancy.

Merrill Wells Johnson, 72, of 208 S. Vermont Ave., died Tuesday
(Dec. 19, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Elmwood-St.
Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. Sharon Betsworth officiating.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral
Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to Merrill Wells Johnson Memorial Fund.

Merrill Wells Johnson was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Mason City,
the son of Chris and Lillian (Wells) Johnson.  He attended and
graduated from Mason City High School in 1941, Mason City Junior
College in 1942, attended Cornell College from 1942-1943, University
of Minnesota from 1943-1945 and did graduate work at the University
of Washington, University of Minnesota and the University of
Guadalajara in Mexico.  Merrill taught at Hudson for three years
then various other public schools in Iowa.  He developed the
remedial reading system for ages 10-13 for the state of Iowa.
 He retired in 1966.

Survivors include several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Kathleen M. Hanson
VENTURA 

Kathleen Marjorie Hanson, 73, of Ventura, formerly of Jewell,
died Monday (Dec. 18, 1995) at North Iowa Medical Health Center
East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethesda
Lutheran Church, Jewell, with the Rev. Tim Nappe officiating.
 Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Jewell.

Visitation will be held this afternoon and evening at Becker
Funeral Home, Jewell, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kathleen Marjorie Hanson was born Jan. 15, 1922, at Sioux City.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Dockwell, Ventura; two
sons, Gregg Hanson, Jewell, and Kevin Hanson, Ventura; one sister,
Barbara Anderson, Jewell; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three infant
sisters and one brother.

Melvina D. Debner
GREENE 

Funeral services for Melvina D. Debner, 90, of Greene, will
be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran
Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with the Rev. Randall V. Baldwin
officiating.  Burial will be in the North Vilmar Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30 to 9 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral
Chapel, Greene, where the family will receive friends from 6
to 8 p.m.  Visitation will continue at the church one hour before
services on Friday.

Melvina Maria Minna Dorthea Debner was born May 30, 1905, near
Vilmar, Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Fred
C. and Minna (Bruns) Debner and died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 1995)
at the Liebe Care Center in Greene from complications of age.

She received her education in the rural Coldwater Township Schools.
As a young lady she was employed as a clerk for the Debner Drug
Store and later the Variety Store, both in Greene.  She later
worked for Landgraff Drug Store in Waterloo until 1946. She returned
home to the family farm where she cared for her aging parents
and in later years she worked part time for the Variety Store
in Greene.  Following her mother's death in 1961, she moved to
her home in Greene where she remained until entering the nursing
home in January 1980.

Throughout the years she continued an active interest in the
family farming operations and as a pastime enjoyed playing cards.

Melvina was a lifelong faithful member of St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church at Vilmar where she was baptized with her twin
brother Will H. on June 18, 1905, and was confirmed on May 4,
1919.

Survivors include four nieces, Viola Keith of Marble Rock; Della
Van Fleet of Cedar Falls; Marlene Gerholdt of Waterloo, and Diane
Baumbach of Iowa City; five nephews, Clarence Debner of Marble
Rock; Dean Debner, Bill Debner and Kenneth Debner, all of Greene,
and Wendell Debner of St. Paul, Minn.; and her sister-in-law,
Gertie Debner of Greene.

She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers,
Fritz, Ferdinand and Will H. Debner.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials
to the Melvina Debner Memorial Fund at St. John's Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Vilmar, or in care of the family.

Harry Burdette Ott
GREENE  

Funeral services for Harry Burdette Ott, 79, of 12392 Camp
Comfort Road, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United
Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Gene Burry officiating.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Reid's
Funeral Chapel, Greene, with an 8 p.m. public Scripture service.

Harry Burdette Ott was born Aug. 3, 1916, in rural Dayton Township,
Butler County, a son of Paul Curtis and Dortha Lillian (Beal)
Ott and died unexpectedly Monday (Dec. 18, 1995) at the Riverside
Community Hospital in Riverside, Calif., of a massive stroke.

He received his education in the Greene Public schools graduating
in 1934. He started farming on his own in 1937 and on Nov. 22,
1937, he was united in marriage to Avis Nettie Maxwell at Mount
Vernon. To this union were born three children: Dennis Harry,
Sheryl Jean and Mark Maxwell.

Harry and Avis farmed west of Greene until 1946 when they moved
to their present farm south of Greene. Even though retired, he
continued his interest in agriculture and the family farm and
was always family oriented. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and
golfing.

He served on the Farmers Cooperative Elevator Board, Creamery
Board and Farm Bureau Board for many years. He served as president
of the Greene Community School Board and was a faithful member
of the United Methodist Church in Greene where he served as a
church trustee, chairman of the official church board, finance
chairman and on the Pastor Parish committee.

Living family members include his loving wife of 58 years, Avis
of Greene; one daughter, Sheryl and her husband, Dr. Thomas Nixt
of Tamuning, Guam; two sons, Dennis and his wife, Mary Lou Ott
of Greene, and Dr. Mark and his wife, Pamela Ott of Cherry Valley,
Calif.; six grandchildren, Theresa Ann Moellenbeck, Sonya Marie
Blanchford, Matthew Thomas Nixt, Angela Jean Lee, Zachari Kyler
Ott and Justin Maxwell Ott; two great-grandchildren, Anjelica
Jean Nixt and Alexandra Rose Nixt; one sister, Margaret Onerheim
of Ottumwa; two brothers, Dale Ott of Charles City, and Dean
Ott of Greene.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert
Ott and a brother in infancy.

Donna Marie Eggers, 53, of 600 S. Johnson St., Charles City,
died Wednesday (Dec. 20, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center
East, Mason City.

Armand Maurice Hanson
THORNTON  

Armand Maurice Hanson, 80, of Thornton, died Wednesday (Dec.
20, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Marlin Ingebretson officiating.
 Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m.
Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.,
Clear Lake.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to service
time Friday at the church.

Armand was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Mason City, to Hans M. and
Netta (Benson) Hanson.  His mother died when he was 5-weeks old
so he lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Benson
until he was 3.  When his grandmother passed away, he went by
train to Montpelier, N.D., to live with his aunt and uncle, Carl
and Bertha Benson.  He also lived with an adopted cousin, Leona
Froelich.  He attended school in Manns Township near Montpelier,
N.D., and was confirmed in the James River Valley Lutheran Church,
Montpelier, N.D.

He met his bride of 50 years, Wilma Madeline Clarissa Helle,
in Montpelier N.D.  At age 21, during the drought and Depression,
he moved to Riceville.  After a few years, he moved to his farm
near Clear Lake.  They were married Sept. 3, 1945, at Mona. 
In 1956, they moved to their present farm near Thornton where
he farmed until retirement.  They celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary Sept. 3, 1995, on the Lady of the Lake.

Armand loved his family and enjoyed farming and gardening. 
He is also remembered for his love of music, playing the piano
and the guitar, for which he attained the nickname ``Beethoven''
or ``Bate''

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Thornton; Senior
Citizens and Sons of Norway.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wilma of Thornton;
three children, Hans Hanson and his wife, Sonja, of Ankeny; Linda
and her husband, David Hopper of Clear Lake, and Bennett Hanson
and his wife, Kay, of Ankeny; six grandchildren, Julie and her
husband, Kevin Quass; Frankie Hanson; Conrad Hanson; Annalisa
and David Hopper and Jonathan Hanson; and three stepgrandchildren,
Wayde, Andy and Scott  Stover.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY  

Elsie Klipping, 71, of 1452 N. Hampshire Ave., died Tuesday
(Dec. 19, 1995) at 1542 N.Carolina Place, the home of her daughter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First
United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Merlin
Ackerson officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to
service time Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Elsie Klipping Memorial Fund.

Elsie Klipping was born July 5, 1924, at Britt, the daughter
of Julius and Lily (Marek) Bartek.  She attended school in Britt.
Elsie was married to Raymond Klipping on Aug. 17, 1943, at Britt.
She worked as head cook/supervisor for the North Iowa Medical
Center for some 27 years, retiring in June 1962.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Klipping of Mason City;
three daughters, Shirley King and husband, Dave, Minneapolis,
Minn.; Bonnie Austin, Mason City, and Virginia Mitchell and husband,
Michael, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Wayne Klipping and
wife, Bernie, Gilroy, Calif., and Merle Klipping and wife, Diana,
Mason City; eight grandchildren, Sherry, David, Kimberly, Ranee,
Lori, Matthew, Daniel and Cassie; three great-grandchildren,
Stevi Jo, Britlyn and Skylee; and five sisters, Lillian Kadlecik,
Crystal Lake; Mildred Black, Manly; Ruth Whalen, Britt; Maxine
Taelour and husband, Robert, Reno, Nev., and Marian Conaway and
husband, Art, Park Rapids, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Emma
and Helen; and one brother, Ray.

Henry Brede, the son of Daniel and Wildelmina (Schmidt) Brede,
was born May 29, 1889, on a farm near Potosi, Wis.  At an early
age the family moved to the Garner area where Henry attended
the Woiwood Country School until the fifth grade.  At the age
of 16, he was confirmed at Peace Reformed Church south of Garner.
 On Sept. 15, 1909, he was united in marriage to Kerstina Fredericka
``Carrie'' Anderson in the Anderson home by the Rev. Joseph Tom.
The couple moved to North Dakota and then returned to Garner
in 1918 where they rented a farm two miles east of Garner.  In
1929, they purchased a farm near Goodell which the family moved
to in 1932 and continues to own today.  After his wife's death
in December 1971, he continued to farm until 1975.  In 1980,
he moved to Nashua, N.H,. where he lived for four years.  In
1984, he moved to St. Charles where he lived until the early
'90s when he moved to the Belmond Nursing Home.

During his lifetime, Henry worked at a variety of jobs, including
the ownership and operation of a portable skating rink, threshing
crew, farmer, painter, harness maker and carpenter.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the United Presbyterian
Church while living in Garner.  In 1932, they changed their church
membership to the United Brethren Church in Goodell which later
became the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

He is survived by two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Nuehring-Sheriff-Brede
of Goodell and Norma Jean Hill-Brede of Nashua, N.H.; six grandchildren,
Judith Arlene McClure and her husband, Dale, of St. Charles;
Delwyn Dale Brede of Glenwood; Stephen K. Brede and his wife,
Deanna, of Hollis, N.H.; Denyce Kay Petrini and her husband,
Edward, of Hollis, N.H.; Robert Anthony Brede and his wife, Linda,
of Shell Rock, and Deborah Pollack of Foster City, Calif; a former
daughter-in-law, Virginia Ann Brede; 15 great-grandchilren, Richard
Earl McClure, Joyce Ann Koerner, Gieselle Fest, Gregory Brede,
Georgia Ipsen, Gordon Brede, Ginger Pietz, Laurie Richardson,
Todd Brede, Matthew Foust, Robert Brede, Rick Brede, Jody Evans,
Carla Evans and Scott Evans; and 18 great-great-grandchildren,
Christa Ramsey, Nicholas Koerner, Christopher Koerner, Matthew
Larson, Kerstina Fest, Jacob Brede, Cassandra Brede, Kyle Olson,

Armand Maurice Hanson

Armand Maurice Hanson, 80, of Thornton, died Wednesday (Dec.
20, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran
Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Marlin Ingebretson officiating.
 Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m.
today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear
Lake.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time
today at the church.

Armand was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Mason City, to Hans M. and
Netta (Benson) Hanson.  His mother died when he was 5 weeks old
so he lived with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Benson,
until he was 3.  When his grandmother passed away, he went by
train to Montpelier, N.D., to live with his aunt and uncle, Carl
and Bertha Benson.  He also lived with an adopted cousin, Leona
Froelich.  He attended school in Manns Township near Montpelier,
N.D., and was confirmed in the James River Valley Lutheran Church,
Montpelier, N.D.

He met his bride of 50 years, Wilma Madeline Clarissa Helle,
in Montpelier, N.D.  At age 21, during the drought and Depression,
he moved to Riceville.  After a few years, he moved to his farm
near Clear Lake.  They were married Sept. 3, 1945, at Mona. 
In 1956, they moved to their present farm near Thornton where
he farmed until retirement.  They celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary Sept. 3, 1995, on the Lady of the Lake.

Armand loved his family and enjoyed farming and gardening. 
He is also remembered for his love of music, playing the piano
and the guitar, for which he attained the nickname ``Beethoven''
or ``Bate.''

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Thornton; Senior
Citizens and Sons of Norway.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Wilma of Thornton; three
children, Hans Hanson and his wife, Sonja, of Ankeny; Linda and
her husband, David Hopper of Clear Lake, and Bennett Hanson and
his wife, Kay of Ankeny; six grandchildren, Julie and her husband,
Kevin Quass; Frankie Hanson; Conrad Hanson; Annalisa and David
Hopper and Jonathan Hanson; and three stepgrandchildren, Wayde,
Andy and Scott  Stover.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LuVern Earl Flatness, 77, of Ozark, passed away Tuesday (Dec.
19, 1995) at his home.

Burial will be in the Springfield National Cemetery.

LuVern was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Worth County, Iowa, the son
of Hans and Anna Pederson Flatness.  He attended Worth County
schools, served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in Alaska
and the Aleutian Islands.  He saw military action across Germany
until the end and was a combat infantryman with the 45th Thunderbird
Division under Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He married Esther J. Citurs on Jan. 1, 1946, at the Northwood,
Iowa, Methodist Church.  They farmed in Iowa for five years before
moving to Sparta in 1952, where they operated a dairy and beef
farm for many years.  He also worked on highway construction
jobs in south Missouri.  He and his wife, Esther, worked several
years in a craft business at Silver Dollar City and across the
United States.  He enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Chalfant and her
husband, George of Winchester, Ky.; Laura McHaffie and her husband,
Rick, of Fordland, and Linda Shelton and her husband, Tim, of
Willard; three sons, Larry Flatness and his wife, Sheila of Strafford;
Lea and his wife, Teresa of Rogersville, and Edward and his wife,
Christine of Sparta; 15 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters;
numerous nieces, nephews, friends and relatives and a special
friend, Violet Kerns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, in 1990, his parents
and an infant sister, Doris.

The family of Nina Helen Oltman has requested that memorial

Nina Helen Oltman was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Mason City, the
daughter of Joseph and Marie (Trumba) Macku.  She attended and
received her education in the Manly school system, graduating
from Manly High School in 1938.  She also attended the University
of Iowa, Iowa City, and the business college in Des Moines. 
After completing her education she worked for the Internal Revenue
Service in Des Moines.  She was united in marriage to Clark Oltman
on Oct. 20, 1942, in Hyannis Port, Mass., while he was in the
service.  In July 1946, they purchased Oltman's Grocery Store
from her father, Joseph Macku, which they owned and operated
until their retirement in 1982, when their son Mark took over
the operation of the business.

She enjoyed working in their grocery store, flowers, cooking
and watching her family work in the garden, but her great love
and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly and
the Manly Birthday Club.

Survivors include her husband, Clark Oltman of Manly; two sons,
Clark Oltman Jr. of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mark Oltman and his
wife, Connie, of Manly; one daughter, Nancy McCourt and her husband,
Dan, of Manly; four grandchildren, Dawn Sunvold and her husband,
Joe of Manly; Mark Oltman of Iowa City; Tyler Henaman and Steven
Henaman, both of Manly; one great-granddaughter, Schyler Sunvold
of Manly; two sisters, Elaine Green of Manly, and Margaret Ashbough
and her husband, Dr. Dale Ashbough of Riverton, Wyo.; as well

Sylvan ``Sid'' O. Hanna, 97, of Woden, died Tuesday (Dec. 19,
1995) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Sylvan O. ``Sid'' Hanna was born on a farm north of Woden on
Nov. 8, 1898, the son of Andrew and Anna (Endresdtr. Bagne) Hanna.

He received his education in rural school near his home and
attended the Waldorf Academy in Forest City.

He was united in marriage to Helene Holland on Jan. 29, 1919.
The marriage later ended in divorce.

Sylvan farmed north of Woden until 1939 when he moved to Worthington,
Minn.

He was united in marriage to Olive Wentworth in 1940. He farmed
240 acres there until his retirement in 1961.

Sylvan made his home on Portage Lake near Brainerd, Minn., for
many years. He was divorced from Olive in 1975.

In 1991, Sylvan moved to Mason City and resided at the Manor
for a time. The last few years, he made his home at the Good
Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

He was a charter member of Grant Lutheran Church.

Sylvan loved music. He was a talented singer and had his own
band.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing.
Traveling was another special hobby of Sylvan's.

He died at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City on Dec.
19, 1995, at the age of 97 years.

He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Alroy and his
wife, Audrey Hanna of Mason City, and Terry and his wife, Carol
Hanna of Liberty, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren;
four stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; his
second wife; an infant daughter, Ardith; a son, Vance O. Hanna;
four brothers, Alfred Hanna, Edwin Hanna, Ole Hanna and Julius
Hanna; and two sisters, Tillie Johnson and Julia Hanna.

1905, in rural Hardin County,  the daughter of Sanford and Lula

She attended school in Greene. On July 26, 1923, in Clarksville,
she was united in marriage to Lloyd Herman Grap.

The couple farmed together near Shell Rock. They also farmed
east of Charles City and south of the Niles Corner, rural Charles
City.

In 1971, they moved into Charles City. Mr. Grap died Aug. 4,
1978, in Charles City.

Mrs. Grap was a member of the Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church,
and a former member of the Ladies Aid of the church. She was
a member of the Welcome Club of Charles City.

In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking for and feasting with
her family, relaxing with a good book and welcoming visitors
to her house at any time.

She was especially fond of crocheting, and crocheted over 300
doilies with people's names in them.

Living family members include two sons and their wives, Harlan
and Pat Grap of Buklomme Hill, Calif,. and Kenneth and Elanore
Grap of Santa Clara, Calif.; two daughters and their husbands,
Betty Jean and Fred Wegner of Clear Lake, and Cleo and Jack O'Connor
of Rudd; a brother, Clarence Vestal of Eldora; two sisters, Goldie
Paulus of Hampton and Erma (Mrs. Glenn) Norman of Union; 18
grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great

Minnie G. Grap
CHARLES CITY

Minnie G. Grap, 90, of 509 16th Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday
(Dec. 21, 1995) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason
City, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 1995,
at the Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, 312 First Avenue, Charles
City, with the Rev. Jon N. Wolff officiating. Burial will be
in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, at
the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt Street, Charles City.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday
at the church.

Mrs. Grap, the former Minnie Gladys Vestal, was born June 20,
1905, in rural Hardin County, Iowa, the daughter of Sanford and
Lula (Bovender) Vestal.

She attended school in Greene. On July 26, 1923, in Clarksville,
Iowa, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Herman Grap.

The couple farmed together near Shell Rock, Iowa. They also
farmed east of Charles City and south of the Niles Corner, rural
Charles City.

In 1971, they moved into Charles City. Mr. Grap died Aug. 4,
1978, in Charles City.

Mrs. Grap was a member of the Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church,
and a former member of the Ladies Aid of the church. She was
a member of the Welcome Club of Charles City.

In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking for and feasting with
her family, relaxing with a good book and visitors to her house
at any time.

She was especially fond of crocheting, and crocheted over 300
doilies with people's names in them.

Living family members include two sons and their wives, Harlan
and Pat Grap of Mokelumme, Calif. and Kenneth and Elanore Grap
of Santa Clara, Calif.; two daughters and their husbands, Betty
Jean and Fred Wegner of Clear Lake, and Cleo and Jack O'Connor
of Rudd; a brother, Clarence Vestal of Eldora; two sisters, Goldie
Paulus of Hampton, and Erma (Mrs. Glenn) Norman of Union, Iowa;
18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great
-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in
death by a brother, Floyd Vestal; and three sisters, Myrtle Franke,
Mildred Tack and Marie Martin.

Willy `Bill' Woods, 78, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 1995) at Franklin
General Hospital.

Clara I. Priem was born May 20, 1897 in Barton Township, Worth
County.

Survivors include one daughter, Gladys Westrem of St. Ansgar;

four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four
step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother

LuVern Earl Flatness
OZARK, MO.  

LuVern Earl Flatness, 77, of Ozark, Mo., passed away Tuesday
(Dec. 19, 1995) at his home.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday (Dec. 22, 1995)
in Harris, a Heritage Funeral Home, Ozark, with the Rev. Bill
Muench officiating.  Burial was in the Springfield National Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday at the funeral home.

LuVern was born Oct. 1, 1918 in Worth County, the son of Hans
and Anna Pederson Flatness.  He attended Worth County schools,
served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in Alaska and the Aleutian
Islands.  He saw military action across Germany until the end
and was a combat infantryman with the 45th Thunderbird Division
under Dwight D. Eisenhower.

He married Esther J. Citurs Jan. 1, 1946 at the Northwood Methodist
Church.  They farmed in Iowa for five years before moving to
Sparta in 1952, where they operated a dairy and beef farm for
many years.  He also worked on highway construction jobs in south
Missouri.  He and his wife, Esther, worked several years in a
craft business at Silver Dollar City and across the U.S.  He
enjoyed playing cards with his friends.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Chalfant and her
husband, George of Winchester, Ky., Laura McHaffie and her husband,
Rick of Fordland, and Linda Shelton and her husband, Tim of Willard;
three sons, Larry Flatness and his wife, Sheila of Strafford,
Lea and his wife, Teresa of Rogersville, and Edward and his wife,
Christine of Sparta; three sisters, Opal Mielke and Nora Pacey,
both of Northwood, and Arlene Hamsund of Kiester, Minn.; three
brothers, Alton and Dale, both of Northwood, and Earl of Winona,
Minn.; 15 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; numerous nieces,
nephews, friends and relatives, and a special friend, Violet
Kerns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 1990, his parents
and an infant sister, Doris.

of Brainerd, Minn., and Alvin Helland of Scarville; 11 grandchildren;

Ethel I. Helm
PLYMOUTH  

Ethel I. Helm, 74, of 801 Broad St., died Thursday (Dec. 21,
1995) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, of natural
causes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major
Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City,
with the Rev. Kathy Kluis of Plymouth United Methodist Church,
officiating.  Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time at the
funeral home.  The casket will be closed.

The family suggests memorials to the Ethel I. Helm Memorial
Fund.

Ethel I. Helm was born July 31, 1921, the daughter of John L.
and Eva (Boutelle) Trebil, in Mt. Vernon, S.D.  Ethel lived in
Mt. Vernon until the age of five and then moved with her family
to Kensett where she attended the Kensett schools.  Ethel married
Dale G. Helm on July 30, 1943 at the Plymouth parsonage in Plymouth.
Ethel worked as a cook for the Plymouth Elementary school for
nine years.

She was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church, where
she served on the Pastor Parish Committee, Plymouth Birthday
Club, and the Plymouth American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Dale G. Helm of Plymouth; two
sons, Ricki M. Helm and his wife, Judy K. of Little Rock, Ark.,
LeAlan D. Helm and his wife, Becky of Aurora, Colo.; one daughter,
Darla D. Rosenberg and her husband, James of Clear Lake; five
grandchildren, Erica M. and Corey R. Helm, Abbe L. and Adam G.
Helm, and Tyler Rosenberg; one brother, Emery Trebil and his
wife, Wilma of Manly; a special sister-in-law, Geraldine Trebil
of Mason City; a special niece, Barbara Einertson of Mason City;
and several other special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers,
Don, Harlow, John and Keith.

Lena Maria Miller

Funeral services for Lena Maria Miller, 93, of 15613 Grand Ave.,

will be in the South Vilmar Cemetery, rural Greene.

Lena Maria Miller was born Dec. 6, 1902 in rural Butler County,
the daughter of Wilhelm and Wilhemina Miller, and died Friday
(Dec. 22, 1995) at Franklin County General Hospital, Hampton.

She received her education in the rural Butler County Schools
and attended the Vilmar German School.  As a young lady she helped
out on the family farm and in later years cared for her aging
parents until their deaths.  She later cared for her sister Minnie
and her brother Ed.  Following Ed's death she lived alone on
the farm until her sister Hulda moved in with her.  Hulda preceded
her in death on July 29, 1995.

Lena will be remembered as a caring daughter, sister and aunt,
who gave of herself to her family that she loved so much.  She
enjoyed cooking, gardening and sewing.  She always read the newspaper
and kept up with current affairs.

She was baptized on March 27, 1903 and confirmed on April 13,
1917 at St. John's Evangelical Church at Vilmar and has been
a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene for
over 50 years.

Living family members include eight nieces, Elaine Blean of
Mason City, Marlene Mickelson of Elk Grove Village, Ill., Shelby
Baltes of Hampton, Lynn Manson of Tripoli, Doris Lovejoy of Waverly,
Barbara Becker of Iowa City, Jane Eason of McAllen, Texas, and
Dr. Anne Voigts of Cedar Rapids; three nephews, Edward Miller
and Fred Miller, both of Bristow, and Dean Steere of Allison;
and many grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Velma
Steere, Minnie Miller, Marie Popinga, and Hulda Voigts; four
brothers, Fred, Ed, William and Henry.

Doris E. Cheney

Funeral services for Doris Ellen Cheney, 98, formerly of 306
N. First St., will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian

Doris Ellen Thorpe was born Oct. 17, 1897 near Allison, Butler
County, a daughter of Edward and Mae (Harvey) Thorpe and died
Friday (Dec. 22, 1995) at the Liebe Care Center.

At an early age she and her family settled in Pleasant Grove
Township, Floyd County, and later moved into Greene where she
attended the Greene Public Schools, graduating in 1917.  In later
years she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
She taught in rural schools in Butler and Floyd counties and
later taught in the Greene Public Schools.

She was united in marriage to Herman Kammeyer in 1919 and to
this union was born one son, Robert Kammeyer.  That marriage
ended several years later.  On Feb. 14, 1948 she was united in
marriage to Will Harold Cheney at the First Presbyterian Church
in Greene.  They made their home in Greene until his death on
May 30, 1972, where she remained until entering the nursing home
in 1990.

Doris was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church
for over 79 years, where she taught Sunday school and took part
in many of the church activities.  She was a member of the American
Legion Auxiliary, Greene Women's Club, and as a past time she
enjoyed gardening, braiding rugs, and had a great love for cats.

Living family members include her son, Bob and his wife, Gail
Kammeyer of Greene; two step-sons, Paul and his wife, Dawn Cheney
of Greene, and Raymond Cheney of Troy, Ohio; two step-daughters,
Ardis and her husband, Alvie Sarchett of Ames, and Andrey Wills
of Kersey, Pa.; one granddaughter, Kathey Kammeyer; 14 step-
grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; step-son,
Frank Cheney; one brother, Walter Thorpe; two sisters, Mame Drew
and Calista Shook Martzahn.

Lloyd Jurgens, 76, died Friday (Dec. 22, 1995) at Belmond Community
Hospital.

Burial will be in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

Lloyd Jurgens, the son of Toby and Ernstena (Koenen) Jurgens
was born June 20, 1919 in Franklin County.

He was united in marriage to Frieda Wiemann on Oct. 15, 1940.
He farmed near Thornton from 1939 to 1963, and did carpenter
work in the Belmond area from 1963 to 1966.  He served the Indian
Mission and Harmony Youth Home from 1966 to 1973, and in 1973
he started the Belmond Upholstery, continuing this work until
his death on Friday (Dec. 23, 1995).

Lloyd was a faithful member of the Bethany Reformed Church in
Belmond, and held offices of Elder and Deacon, and was a Sunday
school teacher and lay speaker.  He enjoyed volunteer work in
Belmond, Cook's Christian Theological School in Tempe, Ariz.,
and Winnebago Reformed Church Mission.

Lloyd especially enjoyed his family, church, upholstery work
and his many friends.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Frieda; daughter,
Linda Sheehan and her husband, Nick of Belmond; sons, Lynn Jurgens
and his wife, Becky of Forest City, and Dennis Jurgens and his
wife, Jane of Winterset; grandchildren, Randy and Anita Jurgens,
Lonnie Jurgens, Lori and Homero Zuniga, Carol Caunt, Tim Jurgens,
Michael and Dani Jurgens, Douglas Jurgens, Chris, Matthew and
Melissa Sheehan; great-grandchildren, Brandi, Brad, Jessica,
Kelly, Kassidee, Duran, Nadine, Pernell Jr., and Elisa; brothers,
Jerry and Paul Jurgens of Latimer, Calvin Jurgens of Thornton,
David Jurgens of Marion; and a sister, Thelma Dannen of Latimer.
