Louis Sukup
SHEFFIELD

Louis Sukup, 93, died suddenly Thursday (Dec. 14, 1995) at his
home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at  Zion-St.
John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Grarup
Funeral Home.

Louis Sukup was born April 2, 1902, at Venus, Neb., a son of
Andrew and Mary (Chocholousek) Sukup.  He was baptized at St.
Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre, Neb.  He was raised on
a farm in Nebraska, attended country schools and went to the
University of Nebraska's mechanic and welding school.

He married Dorothy Amelia Buerkley on Jan. 26, 1927, and to
this union two children were born, Eugene of Sheffield and Adella
White of Mason City.  Louis was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran
Church, Venus, Neb.

The dust bowl years of the 1930s were very difficult for farming
in Nebraska, so they joined the exodus of farmers from Nebraska.
More than half of their neighbors left for Texas, California,
Oregon or Iowa.  As always, some of these people were not welcome
where they moved as jobs were scarce and they were afraid that
you might be taking their jobs as there was no welfare as now.
They said if you don't make it, we will ship you back in a boxcar!
In 1938 Louis and his family moved to Dumont, Iowa, where they
had a wonderful crop for the first time in years.  Later the
family moved north of Bristow and then finally purchased a farm
north of Hansell in 1942.

In 1967 Louis and Dorothy moved from the farm and built a new
home in Sheffield where he resided for the remainder of his life.
The family originally attended St. John Lutheran Church three
and half miles east of Sheffield.  Louis served on the church
council before and during the merger with Zion Lutheran in Sheffield,
and continued to be active in Zion-St. John Lutheran.  His wife,
Dorothy, passed away in 1976.

He is survived by his son, Eugene, and his wife, Mary, of Sheffield;
and his daughter, Adella White, and her husband, Willis, of Mason
City; six grandchildren, Charles and Steve Sukup of Sheffield,
Dr. Kenneth Culp of Iowa City, David Culp of Arcola, Ill., Susan
Hannah of Cedar Falls and Dennis Culp of Sheffield; 12
great-grandchildren,
Nickolas, Crystal, Emily, Elizabeth, Andrew and Jonathan Sukup
and Lisa, Kendra, Tiffany, Rebecca, Adam and Peter Culp; and
one brother, Alvin Sukup of Columbia, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one sister,
Irene Timmerman.

During his lifetime he saw many changes, from the dream of flying
to putting a man on the moon; from picking corn by hand to mechanical
pickers; from the horse and buggy to Model T to V8 engines.
He liked to recall the vivid display of Haley's Comet that he
viewed as a child in Nebraska.  Louis enjoyed many hours in his
woodworking shop making wood baptismal crosses for the church
and items for his grandchildren.  He loved driving his car, dancing
and traveling.  The Lord blessed Louis with a strong faith, good
health and wonderful friends.
