Grace (Kuhlers) Mennenga
BELMOND  

Grace (Kuhlers) Mennenga, 84, of Belmond, died Thursday (Nov.
30, 1995) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel
Reformed Church, rural Belmond, with the Rev. Victor Folkert
officiating.  Burial will be in the Immanuel Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Tenold
Funeral Home, and will continue on Saturday morning until 11:30
a.m. at the funeral home.  Visitation will then be held one hour
prior to services at the church.

Grace (Kuhlers) Mennenga was born Sept. 6, 1911, on a farm northeast
of Meservey, the daughter of Albert and Grace (Verkant) Kuhlers.
She attended country school and graduated from Heidelberg Catechism
at the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

She worked three years in a general store in Meservey before
her marriage to Elmer Mennenga on Feb. 22, 1938, at the Immanuel
Reformed Parsonage.  They farmed east of Belmond for nine years
and moved to a farm southwest of Meservey, where they farmed
until they retired to Belmond in 1974.

She was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church and the RCWM
of the Church.  She enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grand
children.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Rehm and her husband,
Chuck of Waunakee, Wis.; sons, Alan Mennenga and his wife, Lori
of Meservey, and Duane Mennenga and his wife, Pat of Clear Lake;
nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Louie
(Marie) Dirksen and Alvina Kuhlers, both of Belmond, and Alice
Dirks of Meservey; and brothers, Herman and Carl Kuhlers of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; brothers,
Albert and George; and a sister, Reka.

Norval Pitkin, 79, of 1418 N. 23rd St., died Thursday (Nov.
30, 1995) at his home.

Mary Jane Braheny, 83, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Nov. 30,

John Vincent Mason
MASON CITY  

John Vincent Mason, 82, of 663 S. Garfield Ave., died Wednesday
(Nov. 29, 1995) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Grace
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Shafer officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one
hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of North
Iowa or Grace United Methodist Church.

John Vincent Mason was born Sept. 3, 1913, in Swaledale, the
son of Elmer Ellsworth and Alice Mary (Gill) Mason.  After graduating
from Swaledale High School he worked for Schermerhorn Dairy in
Mason City until 1943.  He then returned to farming in the Swaledale
area.  In 1952 he went to work for Grippen Paper Company as a
sales representative, retiring in 1976.  Mr. Mason married Ann
H. Schinnow on April 29, 1960, in Mason City.  He was a member
of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Ann H. Mason of Mason City; two
sons, Larry Mason of Mason City and Richard Schinnow of Rock
Falls; three daughters, Marilyn Dauberg of Morgan Hills, Calif.;
Constance Deets of Annandale, Va.; and Lorraine McDonald of Phoenix,
Ariz.; two sisters, Jeanette McKee of Scottsdale, Ariz., and
Kathryn Mason of Clear Lake; one brother, Frank Mason of Alerton;
11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Maxine,
Berniece and Genevieve; and one brother, Richard.

Dean M. Molstad
MASON CITY  

Dean M. Molstad, 75, of 1517 S. Carolina Ave., died Thursday
(Nov. 30, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Rich Murray
of First Covenant Church officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mason City
Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral
home.

Memorials may be given to the Dean M. Molstad Memorial Fund.

Mr. Molstad was born July 20, 1920, in Osage, the son of Herman
and Erma (Hatfield) Molstad.  Dean married Ruth M. Randall on
Nov. 23, 1941, and this past Thanksgiving they celebrated their
54th wedding anniversary.  Dean served in the U.S. Army during
World War II, receiving several decorations and citations.  He
was discharged in 1946.  Dean was a route truck driver for Jacob
E. Decker and Sons for 33 years, retiring in 1978.  After retirement
he went to work for the Kmart Corporation.  Dean enjoyed hunting,
fishing with family and friends in Canada, and having coffee
with his friends.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a
member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. of Mason City; two sons,
Ronald D. Molstad and his wife, Linda, of Hastings, Minn., and
Steven M. Molstad and his wife, Janet, of Manly; two daughters,
Bonnie L. Martin and her husband, Rick, of Mason City, and Mary
Jo Groshens and her husband, Ron, of Owatonna, Minn.; seven grand
children,
Robert S. Molstad, Erick R. Molstad, Travis W. Willett, Lyndi
Jo Willett, Kyle J. Martin, Bret D. Martin and Lesley Jo Groshens;
one sister, Beulah and her husband, Hartley Johnson of Austin,
Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Edward
Schultz; one brother, Kenneth; one daughter, Diane Kay; and one
granddaughter, Carol Ann.

Eugene J. Griffin
CHARLES CITY  

Eugene J. Griffin, 57, of rural Charles City, died Wednesday
(Nov. 29, 1995) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., as a
result of a massive head injury suffered at work.

Calvin A. Bode
ALGONA  

Calvin A. Bode, 80, of Algona, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 1995)
at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.
Cecelia Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-
Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. 
parish prayer service.

Calvin A. Bode was born April 17, 1915, in rural Algona.

Survivors include four daughters, Emily Hiveley of Lake Park;
Eileen Tjernagel of Willmar, Minn.; Linda Bode of Des Moines,
and Norma Miller of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, Joel Bode and Roger
Bode, both of Algona; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
three brothers, Floyd Bode, Roland Bode and Harold Bode, all
of Algona; and one sister, Evelyn Bickert of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons
and one great-grandchild.

Arlene Wright, 67, of Yates Center, Kan., died Tuesday (Nov.
28, 1995) at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas
City, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First
Church of the Nazarene, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Other arrangements are

Ted Thatcher
OSAGE  

Ted Thatcher, 58, of Osage, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 1995) at
the Mitchell County Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Champion
Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Bates officiating.  The body
will be cremated and burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 until service time on Saturday
at the funeral home.

Ted Thatcher was born April 18, 1937, in Waterloo.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth Thatcher of Osage; two sons,
Todd Thatcher of Camp Hill, Pa., and Christopher Thatcher of
Osage; one brother, Steven Thatcher of Osage; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Harold S. Peterson
MASON CITY  

Harold S. Peterson, 78, formerly of 30 S. Illinois Ave., died
Thursday (Nov. 30, 1995) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's
Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert Towner officiating.  Graveside
committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland
Memory Gardens, Des Moines.

Memorials may be given to St. John's Episcopal Church in memory
of Harold S. Peterson.

Harold Schmidt Peterson was born April 12, 1917, in Fort Dodge,
the son of Robert H. and Minna (Schmidt) Peterson.  He attended
St. Paul's Lutheran School through eighth grade and graduated
from Fort Dodge High School.  He attended Fort Dodge Junior College
and had further education at LaSalle Extension University in
accounting and traffic management in Chicago, Ill., and at NIACC
in Transportation Management.  He worked as a chief clerk for
the Chicago Great Western Railroad for 13 years and was transportation
manager at the Agri Processing Plant (soybean plant) for 27 years
in Mason City.  Mr. Peterson was active at St. John's Episcopal
Church, singing in the choir, serving on the vestry and acting
as acolyte master.  He was a licensed lay reader and lay eucharistic
minister for 35 years.  He helped organize the North Iowa Traffic
Club and served as president for two terms and as secretary/treasurer
for many years.  He was a member of the Mason City Evening Lions
Club, serving as president.

He married Margaret Stiles on July 17, 1945, at the St. Paul
Episcopal Church in Des Moines.  This past summer they celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Peterson of Mason City;
daughter, Margaret Pauline ``Polly'' Sears and her husband, Steven
of Cedar Rapids; two grandsons, Craig Sears of Woodward and Paul
Sears of Center Point; and one niece, Carol Jastrem of Baltic,
S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers,
Ernest, Melvin and Robert Peterson.

Marie C. Stark
BELMOND  

Marie C. Stark, 98, died Monday (Nov. 27, 1995) at the Kanawha
Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St.
Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Tom Currier
and deacon Nick Schmit officiating.  Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery, Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Tenold
Funeral Chapel, Belmond, with a rosary at 2:30 p.m. and a Scripture
service at 7 p.m.

Marie Cecelia (Johnson) Stark, the daughter of John Nicholas
and Molly ``Mary'' Clark Johnson, was born May 21, 1896, in Belmond.

Marie completed grade school and high school in Belmond.  She
then attended and graduated from State Teachers College in Cedar
Falls and began her teaching career at Belmond Elementary.  She
also taught at Terril, Carroll, Marcus, Fort Dodge and Clarion.

In 1944 she married Leon ``Bud'' Stark of Clarion.  She and
Bud operated Stark's Style Shop until retirement.  Following
Bud's death in 1959, she remained active in community and church
organizations.  She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary
and the Catholic Daughters of America, Business and Professional
Women, the Republican Women, church circles, American Red Cross
as an active volunteer, Clarion and Belmond Senior Citizens,
and, her hobby, several bridge groups.

In 1980 she returned to Belmond and resided at the McBurney
Apartments.  In 1989 she became a resident of the care center.
She died Monday at the Kanawha Community Nursing Home.

Survivors include one nephew, Dr. G.R. Hill of Fresno, Calif.;
two nieces, Mrs. Bette Hill Jones of Sun City West, Ariz., and
Mrs. Janice Bailey Quinby of Cedar Rapids; seven grandnieces;
and seven grandnephews; 24 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Norval Pitkin
CLEAR LAKE  

Norval Pitkin, 79, of 1418 N. 23rd St., died Thursday (Nov.
30, 1995) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.  Burial
will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van
Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

The family suggests memorials in his name.

Norval was born June 11, 1916, in Grant Township, near Miller,
in Hancock County.  He was raised northwest of Clear Lake and
attended Grant Township School.

On Aug. 20, 1936, he married Doris Conibear in Albert Lea, Minn.
The couple lived in Clear Lake and he was employed at the Northwestern
Cement Plant and Armour in Mason City.  The couple then moved
to Rudd in 1942 to begin farming.  They moved back to the Clear
Lake area in 1945 to farm north of Clear Lake.  In 1995 they
retired from farming and moved to their present address.

Norval enjoyed being with his family.  His hobbies included
hunting and fishing, as well as working with wood, making windchimes
and repairing things.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clear Lake.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Pitkin of Clear Lake; three
children, Judy Ytzen and her husband, Donald, and Galen Pitkin
and his wife, Cecelia, all of Clear Lake, and David Pitkin and
his wife, Sandra of Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Goldie Bitker
of Clear Lake; four brothers, Sherwood Pitkin and his wife, Marian
of Clear Lake; Franklin Pitkin and his wife, Elaine of Mason
City; Ivan Pitkin and his wife, Geraldine of Clear Lake, and
Curtis Pitkin and his wife, Luella of Andrew, Texas; nine grand
children,
DeAnn Schmitz of Plymouth; Debra Marson of Mason City; Robert
Ytzen, Ronald Pitkin and Dennis Pitkin, all of Clear Lake; Kevin
Pitkin of Marshalltown; Kenneth Pitkin of Sterling, Ill.; Dan
Pitkin of Troy, Ill., and Angela Pitkin of Iowa City; and 13
great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil
Pitkin; one grandchild, Steven Pitkin; and one daughter-in-law,
Marlys Pitkin.

Catholic Church, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating.
Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

The family suggests memorials be made in her name.

Mary Jane was born April 29, 1912, in Clear Lake, the daughter
of Cecil and Stella (Finnegan) Watts.  She graduated from Clear
Lake High School.

On May 30, 1943, she was united in marriage to James Carroll
Braheny in Forest City.  He preceded her in death on Sept. 8,
1991.

She enjoyed helping people and was a member of St. Patrick's
Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan Claesgens of St. Paul,
Minn.; three grandchildren, Paul Claesgens and his wife, Martha;
Thomas Claesgens and his wife, Renee, and Kathryn Claesgens,
all of St. Paul, Minn.; and two great-grandchildren, Lena Paulsen
and Joseph Claesgens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son-in-law,
Roger Claesgens.

Kathleen A. Smith, 46, of Allison, died Friday (Dec. 1, 1995)
at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sietsema
Vogel Funeral Home, Allison.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill
Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday
at the funeral home.

Kathleen A. Smith was born July 20, 1949, in Waterloo.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Smith of Allison; one son,
Don Pittman of Allison; one brother, Melvin Pittman of Barronet,
Wis.; and four grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

William ``Bill'' J. Paine, 66, of 1449 Timber Ave., died Friday
(Dec. 1, 1995) at North Iowa Mercy Hospital, Mason City.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at
the First United Methodist Church, Rockford.  Interment will
be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Schumburg Funeral
Home, Rockford.  Other arrangments are incomplete at the funeral
home.

Eugene J. Griffin, 57, of rural Charles City, died Wednesday
(Nov. 29, 1995) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., as a
result of a massive head injury suffered at work.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Fullerton
Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St.  Burial will be in the Sunnyside
Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral
home, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.
Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Other arrangements are incomplete.

Katherine Atchison
MASON CITY  

Katherine Atchison, 96, died Friday (Dec. 1, 1995) at the Heritage
Care Center.

Private funeral services will be held on Sunday in McGregor,
with burial in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor.  There
will be no visitation.  Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third
St. S.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Katherine Atchison was born Sept. 28, 1899, in McGregor.

Survivors include one daughter, Laura Kleinow of Mason City;
one son, George of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

YATES CENTER, Kan.

Arlene Wright, 67, of Yates Center, formerly of Mason City,
Iowa, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 1995) at the University of Kansas
Medical Center, Kansas City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First
Church of the Nazarene, Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Vincent
Flippo and Dr. Pal Wright, District Superintendent, Joplin District,
officiating.  Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa, and
will continue one hour prior to services.

Memorials may be given to the Arlene Wright Memorial Fund.

Arlene Wright was born July 4, 1928, in Abbortsford, Wis., the
daughter of Elgie C. and Ruth M. (Smith) Moore.  Arlene's family
moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1937.  Arlene attended Mason City
schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1948.  She
attended Bethany Nazarene University in Bethany, Okla., and graduated
in 1957 with a certificate of theology.  Arlene was ordained
as a Nazarene minister in Olivia, Minn., in August of 1971. 
Arlene's life was devoted to God and sharing her faith through
her ministry.  Arlene married the Rev. Howard Wright on Nov,
21, 1967, in Mason City, Iowa.  In subsequent years Arlene and
Howard pastored several congregations throughout the Midwest.
At the time of her death they were serving in this capacity
at the Church of the Nazarene in Yates Center.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Howard Wright of Yates
Center; two sisters, Bernadine Fuller and her husband, Donald,
of Mason City, Iowa, and Colleen Wilson of Valencia, Calif.;
one brother, the Rev. Glen Moore and his wife, Alma, of Salem,
Ore.; one sister-in-law, the Rev. Ella Moore of Panorama City,
Calif.; many nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Edna Matson
MASON CITY  

THERE IS A PIX WITH THIS ONE

Edna Sigrid Amalia Melburg Matson, 102, a lifelong resident
of Monmouth, Ill., died in Mason City on Thursday (Nov. 30, 1995).
Since December 1993, she had been a patient at the Good Shepherd
Health Care Center.  Previously, she was a resident in the Community
Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit for five and one-half years.

Mrs. Matson was born in Monmouth, Ill., on April 6, 1893, the
daughter of Gustav T. Melburg and Bessie Linman Melburg.  Her
parents had come to Monmouth, Ill., from Sweden in the 1860s.
She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in
Monmouth, Ill., where she was a member of the church women's
circles.  While a resident at Good Shepherd she received pastoral
visits from Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Edna attended Willits School in Monmouth, Ill., and graduated
from Monmouth High School in 1912.  She enrolled in the Conservatory
of Art at Monmouth College and created many beautiful landscape
and still-life paintings.

Mrs. Matson devoted her entire life to her family, her home
and her church. Her kind and loving disposition endeared her
to many friends throughout her lifetime.

Edna Melburg married Hilding F. Matson in Monmouth, Ill., on
July 16, 1919.  They were the parents of three children, the
late Howard Matson of Loda, Ill.,; Mrs. R. Vincent (Dorothy Jeanne)
Johnson of Waukegan, Ill.; and Robert T. Matson of Monmouth,
Ill., and Clear Lake.  She had 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grand
children,
which included Dr. Phillip Lee and his wife, Jane (Matson) Lee
and their children, John, Mark, and Dan Lee, all of Mason City.

Mrs. Matson was the oldest surviving member of the First Lutheran
Church in Monmouth, Ill. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three
brothers, one son and one grandson.

Services will be held at Hoover Memorial Chapel in Monmouth,
Ill., on Saturday, Dec. 9, 1995, with burial in the Monmouth
Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth,
Ill.

Dennis E. Peterson, 45, of Joice, died Friday (Dec. 1, 1995)
at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Grace
Community Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Doug Domokos officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Dennis E. Peterson was born March 31, 1950, in Mason City.

of Apex, N.C., and Karon Craft of Chariton; and his grandmother,

William J. Paine was born June 26, 1929 in Nora Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Sherren; nine children, Sandy Knipfel,
Starla Silvey, Ron Paine, Janice Ernst, Lorri Waters, Nancy Stewart,
Chuck Paine, Tammy Miller and Billie Dow; 26 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy Paine.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, two sons, four sisters
and three brothers.

Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., as a result of a massive head
injury suffered at work.

Robert H. Isensee, 83, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday (Dec.
1, 1995) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, of leukemia.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Memorial
Park Cemetery, Mason City.  A memorial service will be held at
11 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 16, 1995) at the Congregational United
Church of Christ in Newton.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Reese Funeral
Home, Newton.

Mr. Isensee had made his home in Newton, Clear Lake and Naples,
Fla.  He was married to Mary Buell on Feb. 1, 1942 in Webster
City.

Robert was born April 19, 1912 in Fargo, N.D., the son of George
and Lillian Hand Isensee.  He graduated from Fargo High School
and from the University of Iowa School of Law.  Following college
he went immediately into the banking business where he remained
until the time of his death.  He had owned banks in Iowa and
a number of other states.  At the present time he was chairman
of the board of the First Newton National Bank in Newton.

He was a founding member of the Ding Darling Foundation; member
of the Iowa State Bankers Association; a 40-year member of the
Mason City Rotary Club, of which he was a Paul Harris Fellow;
and a member of the Mason City Congregational United Church of
Christ.  He had served on many charitable boards in Mason City.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Elisabeth Miller of Clive,
and Jane Kahn of Newton; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild;
and also a special friend and companion, Dorothy Lannom of Grinnell
and Naples, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary in 1991;
and one brother.
