Martha Jeanne Strahorn, 90
April 17, 1922 - January 30, 2013

Martha Jeanne (Russ) Strahorn died on Jan. 30, 2013.

A memorial service was held for her at Creston on Feb. 4 She was born at Iowa Falls on April 17, 1922, and married her high school sweetheart Keith Strahorn in 1942. In 1946 they purchased and operated a hardware store in Kanawha. In the late 1960s they moved to Iowa Falls.

While in Kanawha, she was credited with starting the public library and starting the fi rst Girl Scout program. She and her husband were leaders in the campaign to build a swimming pool at Kanawha. She was a world traveler and a lifelong promoter of libraries.

She is survived by her husband, Keith, and her three daughters, Kathy Strahorn of Tucson, Janet Knock of Creston, and Barbara Strahorn of Tucson.  
 

Bill DeKruyff, 74
October 14, 1938 -  January 24, 2013

Friends and family of Bill DeKruyff of Kanawha met for a memorial service at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013.

Bill had died on Thurs., Jan. 24, at home. Bill was born on Oct. 14, 1938, on the family farm, near Kellogg. He farmed with his father.

He married Marilyn Rose on Jan. 11, 1968. He was a district sales manager for Archer Petroleum. He was an active in church and Gospel music.

He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 45 years; his son, Brian of Prattville, Ala.; his daughter, Beth Daniels of Kanawha; and his five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda. Graveside services were held at the Oakwood Cemetery at Pella on Jan. 28, 2013.


Emily Block
September 17, 1913  - January 29, 2013

Emily Block, 99, of Mason City, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Heritage Care and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th Street N.W., with Rev. Brent Hamilton officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Emily Block memorial fund in care of the family.

Emily was born September 17, 1913, in Britt, IA, the daughter of Henry and Emily (Herkes) Smidt. Emily was united in marriage to Walter Block in Britt, Iowa. Over the years, she worked in housekeeping, and retired from the Sheraton at the age of 78. Emily was a hard worker and self-sufficient. If there was a job to be done – she handled it herself. Emily enjoyed spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, taking care of her dog “Petey”, and her daily 10 AM tea time.

Emily is survived by her daughter: Loretta Johnson of Mason City; 4 grandchildren: Vern Johnson and wife Julie, Vicki Davis and husband Al, Val Smith, and Victor “Dirk” Johnson; 8 great grandchildren: Chris and wife Amy, Misty, Nicky and husband Eric, Sara and husband Brett, Cody (Laurie), Aurora (Tony), Brandi (Troy), and Dave (Jessica); 19 great great grandchildren: Bailey, Taylor, Jacob, Makayla, Braiden, Iliana, Miranda, Keagan, Ryan, Jared, Justin, Lauren, Nico, Jace, Deacon, Jaylah, Devlin, Amarea, and Sienna; 4 siblings: Helen Smidt, Geraldine Pitkin, George Smidt, and Jenny Gorley. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1936; a daughter: Doris Block; and 9 siblings: Hanselmen, Ole, Henry Jr., Louis, Ben, Ann, Lena, Alice, and Fransis.

JAMES C. VELDHOUSE
October 9, 1949 - January 30, 2013

James C. Veldhouse of Eloy, Arizona, formally of McHenry, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Hospice of the Valley Lund Home in Gilbert, Arizona with his family at his side after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jim was born on October 9, 1949, to Charlotte and James E. Veldhouse in Algona, Iowa. He attended school in Corwith and Wesley, Iowa and graduated from Minnesota State College in Mankato, Minnesota in 1971. After graduating Jim started his banking career at Kanawha State Bank, Kanawha, Iowa later moving to Aurora, Illinois and then to Wonder Lake, Illinois.

On February 23, 2002 he married Dawn Anderson in Wonder Lake, Illinois. In June of 2009, Jim retired as Vice President of Loans at the Wonder Lake State Bank and moved to Robson Ranch in Arizona. Jim was active in the McHenry Rotary Club, participating in the annual ham dinner, Rotary scholarship program, and the FISH collection day. He was a member of the RV club and golf club at Robson Ranch and enjoyed dancing at all of the block parties. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and sharing stories with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn; and son, TJ, daughter- in- law, Kathleeya, and granddaughter, Talia, of New Zealand.

A graveside inurnment will be held at a later date at the Corwith Cemetery, Corwith, Iowa.

Tracy Earl Kluver
October 30, 1962 - February 7, 2013 

Tracy E. Kluver, 50, of Eldridge, Iowa, formerly of Crystal Lake died Thursday, February 7, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, February 12th at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Tracy Earl Kluver, the son of Merle and Karen (Brown) Kluver, was born October 30, 1962 at Britt. He graduated from Woden-Crystal Lake High School in 1981 and the University of North Iowa in Cedar Falls in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in business. Tracy worked for a few years in Des Moines at various companies in insurance, collections and at Principal Financial. He then returned to UNI graduating with honors in 1997 with a computer science degree. Tracy lived in Waterloo and was employed at John Deere as an IT data analyst. He received very good performance reviews in mentoring others at work. In 2003, he moved to Eldridge near the Quad Cities and continued working at John Deere at the World Headquarters as a project manager in the Information Knowledge Center. Tracy turned 50 last October and had a big surprise party in Eldgridge for him. He had a dry sense of humor and quiet mannerism about him. Tracy was very knowledgeable and loved to talk. He always had a position on any topic of conversation. He loved sports, especially watching NFL football games and UNI Panther teams. He enjoyed playing golf, trips to Paris and Vegas and spending time with his nieces, nephews, and his girlfriend Anna and family. Tracy loved anything that was John Deere and was very proud to be a part of the John Deere team.

He was a member of the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church, lifetime member of the UNI Alumni Association, John Deere Golf League member and a condo board member.

Tracy is survived by his mother, Karen Kerr of Waterloo; his long-time girlfriend, Anna Gingery of Davenport; a brother, Bruce (Marcia) Kluver of Crystal Lake; a sister, Toni (Carl) Eckenrod of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Victoria Kluver of St. Louis, MO; nieces and nephews, Brett (Heather) Kluver and their daughter, Aubrey, Amber Kluver (fiancé, Brandon Heimer), Logan and Carson Williams and Ashley, Amber and Jason Kluver; step nieces and nephew, Alexandria, Carlie and Austin Eckenrod; two aunts, Eleanor Kluver of Crystal Lake and Glenys (Dale) Bird of Florida; two uncles, Morris Kluver of Forest City and Buster (Marlene) Brown of Clarion; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merle; and brother, Kevin.

Lil Lane Kay Hartema
October 12, 1946 - February 16, 2013 

Lil Lane "Lannie" Hartema, 66, of Garner died Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 4 P.M., Saturday, February 23rd at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner with a memorial service to immediately follow with Rev. Ed Bard, Hospice Chaplain, officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Lil Lane "Lannie" Hartema Memorial Fund.

Lil Lane Kay Hartema, the daughter of Louis and Margaret (Weir) Adkisson, was born October 12, 1946 at Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated from Waterloo Columbus High School in 1964. She was married to Kenneth Regan and to this union five children were born. They later divorced. Lanni lived in Waterloo where she raised her children. In 1976 she moved with her children to a farm near Nora Springs and worked in Mason City at Kozy Korner and Pies & More. In 1995 she moved to Garner and was employed at Casey's General Store until her retirement. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, gardening, puzzles and playing pogo on the computer.

Lannie is survived by her children, Jeff Regan, Sr. of Lugoff, SC, Angela (Gerry) Meier of Garner, Todd Regan of Mason City, Mary Peterson of Garner and Christine (Kent) Anderson of Garner; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters and brothers, Judy Betts of Orlando, FL, Randy Miller of Waverly, Lynn (Morris) Jacobs of Lahaina, HI, Scott Adkisson of Waterloo and Lisa (Gary) Brandau of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; and a grandson, Justin Meier.


Milton Alfred Boman
February 8, 1918 - February 18, 2013 

Milton A. Boman went to rest with his Heavenly Father on Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Cedars Assisted Living Home in Madrid, Iowa.

A private family service was held.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Cedars Assisted Living Home in Madrid.

Milton Alfred Boman, the son of Alfred and Ellen (Benson) Boman was born February 8, 1918 in the family farm home in Forest City, Iowa. He attended Forest City High School. After graduation, he entered the Coast Guard in 1942 and served 4 years on both coasts training guard dogs. Milton was one of the last surviving World World II Veterans. He returned home and married Helen Arlene Nelson in 1948 at the First Baptist Church in Forest City. Milton and Helen raised three children on the family homestead where he farmed well into his 80s. They celebrated 63 years together before Helen's passing in March of 2012. Besides farming, he was a Trustee for Hancock County for 45 years. He was a Director of Hancock Mutual Insurance Association and also director for Capital Security Life Insurance Company for many years. After retiring, he and Helen moved to Garner, Iowa. He was a member of First Baptist Church. His hobbies included art, music, and cars, and he had a love for animals and nature. He will be remembered for his kind heart and handsome smile.

He is survived by three children, Cynthia (Bob) Cramer of Boone, Wesley (Cherie) Boman of Klemme and Trudy (Tom) Burford of Johnston; grandchildren, Reynolds, John (Gina), and Erika Cramer, Sally (Michael) Lynick, Katie and Betsy Boman, Thomas Ryan (Tiffany) and Anna Burford; and eight great grandchildren.


Erma Frey Puffer Halverson
February 16, 1918 - January 22, 2013

Erma Magdelene (Frey) Puffer Halverson was born Feb. 16, 1918 at rural Corwith to Edward and Lillian (Zimmerman) Frey. Erma graduated from Corwith High School in 1935 and attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She then worked for Mullin Seed Co. in Corwith and married John W. Puffer on Feb. 14, 1939 in Corwith. The couple lived NE of Wesley before moving to Corwith in 1946. After John’s death on Oct. 31, 1970, Erma moved to Mason City where she went back to college. She worked at Green Lake Center in Green Lake, Wisc. and later at Builders Supply in Mason City. On Oct. 6, 1979, she was united in marriage to Honroe Halverson in Mason City. The couple lived on a farm south of Woden until moving into Britt. After Honroe died on July 15, 2000, Erma moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. She lived there until becoming a resident of the Westview Care Center in Britt in December 2008 and died there on Tuesday afternoon Jan. 22, 2013 at the age of 94.

Erma through the years was active in the churches she attended. She enjoyed quilting, knitting and was a very well organized person. She was still emailing and instant messaging people at age 89. Erma traveled through most of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska as well as visiting Canada and Mexico. She was also a lifetime member of Unity Chapter No. 58 Order of the Eastern Star Mason City.

Survivors include her son John and wife Ginny of Sioux Falls, S. D. and daughter Jane and husband Ed Kinder of Cheyenne, Wyo.; daughter-in-law Carol Puffer of Omaha, Neb.; step-children Craig Halverson and wife Louise of Golden Valley, Minn.; Joyce and husband Armin DeWaard of Waterloo, and Bruce Halverson and wife Mary of Britt; as well as two grandchildren and their families; Alyssa and husband Walker Tate and Colleen and husband Ted Franco and their children Joshua, Leah and Gabrielle; seven step-grandchildren and their families; Lori and husband Greg Krause and son Grant; Thor Halverson and wife Sheri and their children Erik and Kjerstin; Brent Halverson and daughter Trista; Kristi and husband Christopher Wendland and children Abigail and Josiah; Karin and husband Brian McDonnald; David DeWaard and Jody Halverson and wife Peggy and their children Beth and Katie.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, one brother Raymond Frey, son Ron Puffer and grandson Daren Puffer. 

Funeral services were held Saturday,Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Renwick. Interment was at the Corwith Cemetery.

Lilly Kadlecik
January 1, 1923 - February 13, 2013

Lilly Kadlecik, loving mother and wife, age 90, of Crystal Lake, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Algona Manor in Algona, Iowa.

Funeral services for Lilly Kadlecik will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, in Britt with Rev. Robert Snitzer officiating.  Burial will be in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery next to her husband Steve Kadlecik.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 11:00 AM until the time of service.

Lilly, the daughter of Julius and Lily (Marek) Bartek, was born January 1, 1923 in Duncan, Iowa and spent her entire life in the Crystal Lake, Iowa area.

On January 8, 1944, Lilly married Steve Kadlecik.  They were married fifty years, and raised six children and nephew Jimmy Kadlecik.  In addition to her family, Lilly worked as head cook at the Crystal Lake school house for 22 years, followed by employment at Winnebago Industries.  Lilly loved to quilt, garden and cook for her family.

Lilly is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law:  Elaine Sui of Honolulu, Hawaii, Janice Christensen of Algona, Jean Ann (Ken) Lacy of Ocala, Florida and Jenise (Steven) Kohnke of Jackson, Mississippi; four sisters: Ruth Whalen, Millie Black, Marian Conaway and Maxine Taelour.  (Her remaining sisters: Helen Black, Elsie Klipping, Emma VanDusseldorp and brother Raymond Bartek reside with the Lord.)  Lilly was blessed to have 14 grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Julius and Lily Bartek; husband Steve Kadlecik; son Larry Kadlecik; daughter Sharon Sikes; granddaughter Laurie; along with her sisters and brother mentioned above.


James C. Veldhouse

James C. Veldhouse, 63, of Eloy Ariz., died on Jan. 30, 2013, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. A graveside inurnment will be held at Corwith at a later date. A native of Algona, Jim went to school at Corwith and Wesley. He was a 1971 Mankato State College graduate.

He was an executive at the Farmers State Bank, here, before regulators closed it on July 26, 1987. He was employed in banking at Aurora and Wonder Lake, both in Illinois. In 2009 he retired to Robson Ranch, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn; a son, TJ; and a granddaughter.

Jeffrey Horstman
July 24, 1962 - February 22, 2013

Jeffrey A. Horstman, 50, of Britt passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

A mass of Christian burial for Jeff Horstman will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 139 3rd St. Southeast, in Britt with the Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation was held on Feb. 26 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt and will ontinue one hour prior to services at the church on Feb. 27.

Jeffrey Alan Horstman was born July 24, 1962 in Britt to Paul and Millie (Wellik) Horstman. He graduated from Britt High School in 1981.

On Sept. 17, 1983, Jeff was united in marriage to Nancy Urich at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The couple had three boys, Mitchell, Nicholas, and Alan.

Jeff was employed at Stellar Industries in Garner as a customer service representative.

His hobbies included farming, camping, hunting and golfing, as well as his love for riding his Harley-Davidson on the open road. He was a very sociable and friendly guy.

Jeff was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Nancy Horstman of Britt; sons, Mitchell (Alicia Shahan) Horstman of Garner, Nicholas Horstman of Britt, and Alan Horstman of Britt; his parents Paul and Millie Horstman of Britt; siblings Vicki and Paul Seufferlein of Austin, Texas, Kathy and Bob Eisenman of Grundy Center, Michael and NedraHorstman of Britt, Jean Ann and Rich Bruns of Huxley; mother-in- law Angeline Helmerick of Delta, Colo.; siblings in law Gerald and Rita Urich of Austin, Colo., Veronica and Oly Maas of Crystal Lake, Tony and Sue Urich of Garner, Yvonne (Carlos Lopez) Vizcarra of Des Moines, Bambie (Jeff Marsters) Urich of Garner, Bonaven and Joyce Urich of Delta, Colo., Karen and Mark Beasley of Colorado Springs, and Margorie and Charles Langhoff of Payton, Colo., along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by father-in-law Clement Urich, brother-in-law Bernard Urich, and his paternal and maternal grandparents.


Melissa Moore
March 10, 1979 - February 16, 2013

Melissa S. (Holt) Moore, 33, of Mason City, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A celebration of life service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 at Major Erickson Funeral Home in Mason City with the Rev. Ed Bard officiating. A gathering of friends and family began at 10 a.m. till the time of services at the funeral home. Inurnment will be held at later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Melissa S. Melissa Holt was born March 10, 1979 in Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of Richard Holt and Penny Cummings. She graduated from Britt High School in 1996. She worked at Super 8 Motel in Mason City as the assistant manager for many years. She attended college at North Iowa Area Community College and was interested in the medical field. She had a love for animals and they always put a smile on her face. She loved the time she spent with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for never giving up for her optimistic approach for life.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Moore; children, Kaicey Follman and Carter Moore; sisters, Michelle Holt and Tami Jo Holt; mother, Penny Cummings; father, Richard Holt and mother-in-law, Mary Moore.

She was preceded in death by her aunt and grandpas.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the North Iowa Hospice staff for all their compassion and care.
