A. Horton, 64, of Clarion passed away
Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Mercy Medical
Center – North Iowa in Mason City.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Patricia
Horton will be held on Friday, April 12,
2013 at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Catholic
Church, 608 2nd Avenue North East, in
Clarion with Reverend Nils Hernandez
officiating. Burial will take place at
the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter
at a later date.
Visitation will be held on Thursday,
April 11, 2013 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at
Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue
East, in Clarion with a scriptural wake
service beginning at 7:00 PM.
Patricia Ann (Murray) Horton was born
February 17, 1949 in New Hampton to
James and Florine (Nosbich) Murray. She
attended Catholic school through the 8th
grade before graduating from Turkey
Valley High School in 1967.
Following high school, Patricia attended
the University of Northern Iowa where
she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree
in elementary education. She later
earned her Master’s degree in special
education from Morningside College in
Sioux City alongside raising four
children.
Patricia began her teaching career in
Burt, where she spent two years prior to
another two years in Eagle Grove. After
receiving her advanced degree, she
taught special education in the Britt
school system until her retirement in
May of 2012.
Patricia was united in marriage to Gary
Horton on June 30, 1972 at Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler.
Her family was incredibly important to
her. She especially loved spending time
with her three grandchildren and taking
family vacations each year.
Patricia was an active member of St.
John’s Catholic Church in Clarion where
she was a member of the Mom’s group and
attended bible study. She also loved to
read and enjoyed attending book club at
the library, going for walks with the
dog, and jazzercise. Patricia was also
a member of the AAUW.
Patricia is survived by her husband Gary
of Clarion; children Laura (Shaun) Hogle
and their daughters Grace and Emma of
Pleasant Hill, Jennifer (Keith) Golly
and their daughter Claire of Altoona,
Kari Horton of North Liberty and David
(Hanna Lunde) Horton of Oceanside,
California; her sister Donna Murray of
Perry and numerous other family members
and friends.
Patricia was preceded in death by her
parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
directed to the Domestic/Sexual Assault
Outreach Center in Fort Dodge.

“Doc” F. Diemer, 80, of Britt, passed
away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his home.
A memorial service for Doc Diemer will
be held on Friday, April 5, 2013 at
10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church,
707 4th Street SW, in Britt with Pastor
Robert Dodge officiating.
Inurnment will be at Evergreen Cemetery
in Britt.
Visitation will be held on Thursday,
April 4, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at
the United Methodist Church, 707 4th
Street SW, in Britt and will continue
one hour prior to services on Friday.
Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt is
assisting the family.
Duane Frederick Diemer, the son of Floyd
and Clara (Sailer) Diemer, was born on
June 22, 1932 in Ackley, Iowa. He
attended school in Ackley, graduating
from Ackley High School. Doc then
went to Iowa State University for two
years before he was accepted at the
College of Veterinarian Medicine.
Doc was united in marriage to Beverly
Noelting on August 24, 1952 in Dumont,
Iowa. In June of 1956, Doc
graduated from the College of
Veterinarian Medicine at Iowa State
University and the couple moved to
Britt. He established his
Veterinary Practice and continued
working for almost 50 years.
Doc was a member of the United Methodist
Church in Britt. He was very
active in the community as well being a
member of the School Board, the Britt
Country Club, City Council, Rotary and
the Chamber of Commerce.
Doc loved spending time with his family,
especially the grandchildren; they were
his pride and joy. He also enjoyed
watching sporting events, fishing,
golfing and playing cards. Doc
will be greatly missed by family and
friends.
Doc is survived by his wife of 60 years
Beverly of Britt; 3 children:
Marsha (Mark) Meyer of Johnston, Jim
(Renee) Diemer of Britt and Curt
(Christa) Diemer of West Branch; 11
grandchildren: Lizzie, Dan, Allie,
Nicole, Aaron, Kristie, Jane, Rachel
(fiancé Joe Knoepfler), Erika, Kara and
Julia; 2 sisters: Sharon (Bob)
Treinen and Doris (Robert) Ibeling;
along with numerous nieces, nephews,
other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents
and an infant daughter Diane.

Dorothy
E. Hollatz, 99, of Garner died Sunday,
April 7, 2013 at the Concord Care Center
in Garner.
Funeral services will be held 10 A.M.,
Saturday, April 13th at St. John's
Lutheran Church east of Garner with Rev.
Carl Hedberg officiating. Burial will be
in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7
P.M., Friday at the Cataldo Funeral
Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., in Garner and
will continue one hour prior to services
at the church.
Dorothea Elizabeth Hollatz, the daughter
of Gustav and Louise (Dorow) Pueggel,
was born September 29, 1913 on her
parents' farm northwest of Clear Lake.
She was baptized and confirmed at St.
John's Lutheran Church near Garner.
Dorothy attended the rural schools near
her home, St. John's Parochial School
and graduated from Ventura High School
in 1931. She continued her education at
Waldorf College in Forest City
graduating with a teacher certificate.
She taught in elementary schools at
Garner, Ventura and Colwell, Iowa. On
August 15, 1937 she was married to
Conrad "Connie" Hollatz at St. John's
Lutheran Church. They farmed northeast
of Garner for 55 years until their
retirement. They celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary on August 15, 1987.
After Connie's death on December 4,
1991, Dorothy moved to a condo in
Garner. She later moved to Prairie View
Apartments in Garner and in 2007 the
Concord Care Center. Besides the special
joy of her family, Dorothy enjoyed
gardening, growing flowers, playing
cards, bowling (until she was 89),
watching the Garner church league
softball games and fishing in Minnesota.
The family was thankful she could travel
to Colorado, Long Island, NY, Minnesota
and go on local country drives or for
pancakes at Perkins in later years. In
addition, the family spent many special
hours playing games and reminiscing via
her diaries (which she started at age
12), collections of Des Moines Register
cartoons, artistic pieces, greeting card
scrapbooks and favorite poems.
She was a lifetime member of St. John's
Lutheran Church. Church was an important
part of Dorothy's whole life which
included Walter League days, Ladies Aid
activities and teaching Sunday school
for 25 years.
Dorothy is survived by her three
children, Sandra Accola of Minneapolis,
MN, Dean (Kathy) Hollatz of Grand
Junction, CO and Donn (Taryn) Hollatz of
Marshalltown; grandchildren, Terence
Accola of Brooklyn, NY, Hans (Bella)
Accola of Brooklyn, NY and their two
children, Charlotte and Margot, Steven
Accola of Minneapolis, MN, Elizabeth
Hollatz of Ft. Collins, CO and Allyson
(April) Baird of Grand Junction, CO; a
step-grandson, James (fiancée, Kieran)
Bierly of Des Moines and son, Landon; a
brother, Arnold Pueggel of Clear Lake;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Connie; and sisters,
Esther Pueggel, Agnes Hollatz and Anna
Radloff.

James
C. Veldhouse of Eloy, Arizona, formally
of McHenry, Illinois, passed away on
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Hospice
of the Valley Lund Home in Gilbert,
Arizona with his family at his side
after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jim was born on October 9, 1949, to
Charlotte and James E. Veldhouse in
Algona, Iowa. He attended school in
Corwith and Wesley, Iowa and graduated
from Minnesota State College in Mankato,
Minnesota in 1971. After graduating Jim
started his banking career at Kanawha
State Bank, Kanawha, Iowa later moving
to Aurora, Illinois and then to Wonder
Lake, Illinois.
On February 23, 2002 he married Dawn
Anderson in Wonder Lake, Illinois. In
June of 2009, Jim retired as Vice
President of Loans at the Wonder Lake
State Bank and moved to Robson Ranch in
Arizona. Jim was active in the McHenry
Rotary Club, participating in the annual
ham dinner, Rotary scholarship program,
and the FISH collection day. He was a
member of the RV club and golf club at
Robson Ranch and enjoyed dancing at all
of the block parties. He enjoyed hunting
and fishing and sharing stories with his
friends.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn; and
son, TJ, daughter- in- law, Kathleeya,
and granddaughter, Talia, of New
Zealand.
A graveside inurnment will be held on
Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2 p.m. at
the Corwith Cemetery. His family will
greet friends following the service at
the Corwith Community Center.

A. Hiscocks, 81, of Garner died Tuesday,
April 9, 2013 at the Concord Care Center
in Garner.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M.,
Saturday, April 13th at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Garner with Fr.
Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will
be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 P.M.
to 7 P.M., Friday at St. Boniface
Catholic Church with a Rosary society
rosary at 4:30 P.M. and a Scriptural
wake service at 7 P.M. Visitation will
continue one hour prior to service at
the church.

Irene Angelice Hiscocks, the daughter of
Joseph and Ella (Buckley) Chizek, was
born June 29, 1931 on a farm west of
Britt. She attended the rural schools
near her home and graduated from Britt
High School in 1948. She continued her
education at Britt Junior College and
Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar
Falls where she received her teaching
certificate. Irene then taught in the
rural schools of Hancock County. On
November 20, 1954 she married William
(Bill) Hiscocks at St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Britt. They farmed
near Britt until 1965, when they moved
to a farm southeast of Garner. After
Bill passed away in 2003 she continued
to live on the farm until moving into
Garner in 2011. Irene enjoyed her
family, baking chocolate chip cookies,
playing bridge, reading, doing crossword
puzzles and gatherings with her sisters.
As a mom, she supported her children in
their 4-H projects and as a member of
the Music Mothers at Ventura Community
School. Her organizational abilities
ensured that her husband never missed a
volunteer board meeting. She was a
member of St. Boniface Catholic Church
and Rosary Society.
Irene is survived by her four children,
Kerry (Denise) Hiscocks of Ventura,
Kathleen (Bennett) Cepak of Colleyville,
TX, Mark (Sandy) Hiscocks of Garner and
Rita Hiscocks of St. Charles, MO; seven
grandchildren and their families, Ryan
(Brandi) Hiscocks and their three
children, Riley, Parker and Brinley,
Emily (Lansing) Hill and their two
children, Aspen and Ruger William, Erin
Hiscocks (fiancé, Josh Missman), Michael
(Kristen) Cepak, Natalie Cepak, Scott
(Lindsay) Britson and their two
children, Drew and Sadie and Matt
Hiscocks; three sisters, Rita Stevenson
of Mason City, Veronica (Bill) Lawlor of
Clear Lake and Marge (Steve) Jano of
Somerset, PA; a sister-in-law, Dorothy
Chizek of Britt; a brother-in-law,
Leonard Pistek of Britt; and many, many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Bill, Aug. 25, 2003;
sisters, Rosella (Lester) Daniels, and
Kathleen Pistek; a brother, Virgil
Chizek; brother-in-law, John Stevenson;
and a nephew, Michael Stevenson.

William “Bill” was born April 3,
1949 in Britt, Iowa to Robert

Britt schools, graduating from

Bill worked as a carpenter in
his younger days, learning the
trade from his dad. Bill
had many different jobs
throughout his younger years,
with the most recent being at
Winnebago Industries in Forest
City, Iowa.
Bill married Bonnie Pletcher on
April 21, 1978 at the United
Methodist church in Britt.
They spent their entire married
life in Britt.
Bill was known for his quick wit
and great sense of humor.
He enjoyed watching westerns and
spending time with his family
and friends. He will be
dearly missed by all.
Bill is survived by his wife,

First Presbyterian Church in
Woden with Rev. Dr. Glenn Wilson
officiating. Burial will be in
Bingham Township Cemetery south
of Woden with military rites by
the Woden Veterans Ceremonial
Unit.

to 7 P.M., Friday at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel in Woden and will
continue one hour prior to
services at the church.
Calvin Harvey Eden, the son of
George and Jennie (Bruns) Eden,
was born November 21, 1924 on a
farm near Woden. He attended
Woden High School and helped his
family on the farm. Calvin
served his country during WW II
in the U.S. Army being stationed
in Japan. Following his time in
the service, he returned to
Woden and farmed with his
sister, Nettie. In 1984, Calvin
and Nettie moved into Woden.
He was a member of First
Presbyterian Church where he
served as a church elder and was
active on other church boards.
Calvin is survived by two
sisters, Delores Hansen and her
husband, John, of Minneapolis,
MN and Della Manning of Mesa, AZ
and her special friend, Lyle
Bunn; a sister-in-law, Darlene
Eden Klasse of Forest City; two
nieces; and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; an infant sister,
Jeanette Mary Eden; sister,
Nettie Eden; brothers, Harold
Eden and Glen (Mary) Eden; and a
brother-in-law, Curtis Post.

NALL

1931 - April 18, 2013
Betty
Lou Nall was born April 2, 1931,
in southern Iowa, the daughter
of John and Fern (Bettis) Adams,
Sr. As a young girl in 1938 she
moved with her family to Britt
where she attended school and
graduated from the Britt High
School in 1948. After her
schooling she worked at the drug
store in Britt.
On January 13, 1951, Betty was
united in marriage to Richard
Nall at the Baptist Church in
Britt. After their marriage they
lived and farmed west of Corwith.
They raised their family on the
farm and remained living there
until moving into Corwith in
2001.
Betty thoroughly enjoyed
spending time with her
grandchildren and following them
in their activities. She also
enjoyed painting, sewing,
reading and gardening. Betty was
an active member of the First
Baptist Church in Corwith,
teaching Sunday school and
holding various other offices.
Betty died Thursday, April 18,
2013, at the Kossuth Regional
Health Center in Algona. She was
82.
She is survived by her husband,
Richard Nall of Corwith;
children, Julie and husband Jon
Wittmeier of LuVerne; Judy and
husband Stephen Johnson of
Hastings, Minnesota; Dwight Nall
and wife Donna of Corwith; eight
grandchildren; one
great-grandson; a sister,
Cathern Meyer of Kanawha and
several nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Betty was preceded in death by
her parents; two daughters, Joy
and Jody Nall; a brother, John
Adams, Jr. and a sister, Dorthy
Gifford.
