Kenneth M. Greiman, 1915-2009

Kenneth GreimanKenneth M. Greiman, 93, of Garner, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with the Rev. Jon Rollefson officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Kenneth Mitchell Greiman, the son of Fred and Caroline (Wille) Greiman, was born on November 11, 1915, on a farm south of Garner. He attended country school near his home and graduated from the Garner High School in 1933. On August 13, 1939, he married Evelyn Jante at the St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner. They farmed south of Garner until 1941 when they moved to a farm northeast of Garner.

Besides farming, Kenny was actively engaged in raising angus cattle and horses. He had a passion for horses and worked with them all his life. He participated in the by invitation only Britt Draft Horse Show every year since inception and many other shows and parades including the 40 horse hitch in the Milwaukee Circus Parade over the years. He was honored to be inducted into the Iowa Draft Horse Hall of Fame.

Kenny served on the school board, creamery board and the St. Paul Lutheran Church Board and Building Committee. He was a member of the Saddle Club, North Garner Community Club and was a 4-H Leader.

Kenny is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Garner; three sons, Daniel (Nancy) Greiman of Brookings, Oregon, Keith (Connie) Greiman of Edina, Minnrsota and Kevin (Paula) Greiman of Arvada, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Brian (Dalene) Greiman, Andrew (Jennifer) Greiman, Carisa (Brian) Valentine, Justin (Melissa) Greiman, Kayle (Rebekah) Greiman, Travis Greiman and Kaylan Greiman; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Vivian Greiman of Goodell; and many nieces and nephews. Kenny thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Duane in 1966; and brothers, Burtis and Wayne Greiman.

Duard H. Lewis, 1928-2009

June 10, 2009

Duard Henry Lewis, passed away on March 7, 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was living in Logan, New Mexico and wintering in Tonto Basin, Arizona.

Public graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, June 12, 2009, at the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme. Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to gather at the Andrews Funeral Chapel, Klemme, starting at noon on Friday. The Klemme Military Unit will conduct full military honors.

Duard was born on January 16, 1928 in Klemme, to Henry Lewis and Rose Etchen Lewis. He lived in Klemme until his marriage to Mildred Meinders on November 18, 1949 and they moved to Humboldt, where Duard worked for the Cornbelt Power Co. In 1961, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked for the Salt River Project until he retired in 1987.

Duard enjoyed hunting and fishing. He served in the US Army from 1946 through 1948. He was a member of the Maricopa County Volunteer Sheriff's Posse in Arizona. In 1987, he started putting together a cookbook for his wife and daughters. At 1,000 recipes he was going to quit but never did. He was always finding new recipes to try and add to the cookbook. His editorial comments were as good as the food.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; three daughters, Shelley (Dennis) Winn of Clovis, New Mexico, Ramona (Jerry) Adams of Pagosa Springs, Colorado and Cindy (Russell) Amidon of Herperus, Colorado; one grandson, Jeremiah Heinz of Clear Lake; and two great-grandchildren.

Leo Ochoa, 1962-2009

Leo OchoaLeo Ochoa, 47, of Garner, died on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 11, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with Fr. Henry Huber officiating. Military Rites were conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Inurnment was in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner at a later date. The Cataldo Funeral Home of Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Leo C. Ochoa, the son of Hilario and Salome (Calderone) Ochoa, was born on May 21, 1962 at Britt. He grew up in Garner and graduated from the Garner-Hayfield High School in 1981. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. Leo served as a translator for Cuban refugees in Florida for a time. He later returned to Garner and was employed at the Globe-Gazette, Clear Lake Bakery and most recently Opportunity Village. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Emory of Garner; daughter, Celia Ochoa of Hampton; parents, Hilario and Salome Ochoa of Garner; his children's mother, Crystal Carpenter of Hampton; six brothers, Larry (Margaret) Ochoa of Boca Raton, Florida, Everardo Ochoa (special friend, Anna) of Garner, Maurio (Jean) Ochoa of Mason City, Carlos (Sally) Ochoa of Corona, California, Richard (Echo) Ochoa of Mason City and Jose Luise (Donna) Ochoa of Ankeny; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Marsha Thayer of Clear Lake, Claudia Heusinkveld of Clear Lake and Nick Chambers of Garner.

Leo was preceded in death by his brother, Nievus Ochoa.

Janet Schroeder, 1933-2009

June 17, 2009

Janet E. Schrceder, 76, of Britt, died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at her home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 13, at the Britt Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Stan Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Ewing Funeral Home of Britt was in charge of the arrangements.

Janet Elaine Schroeder, the daughter of Charles and Lovella (Bolsinger) Hanson, was born on June 1, 1933, north of Forest City. She grew up on a farm near Carpenter, Iowa, graduating from both the Carpenter High School and Waldorf College. On August 23, 1954, Janet was united in marriage to Harlan Schroeder at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, Iowa. From this union three children were born, Karen Elaine, Julie Marie and Linda Kay.

Janet loved to crochet, quilt and do embroidery, which she gave to her family and others. She loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren. Janet worked at the Ben Franklin, later Sweers Emporium in Britt for 25 years until it closed. She really enjoyed interacting with people from the community. Janet was a member of the Britt Evangelical Free Church. She was active in the Women's Missionary Society (WMS) and Bible study group.

Janet is survived by her husband, Harlan; children, Karen (Glen) Arkema of Britt, Julie (Dave) Eden of Wesley and Linda (Mark) Gudmonson of Savage, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Megan and Jenna Arkema, Brett Eden, Callie and Troy Gudmonson; brothers and sisters, Marvin (Sharon) Hanson, Roger (Shirley) Hanson, Marilyn (the late Doyle) Wilder, all of St. Ansgar, Ellen (Charles) Krueger of Mesa, Arizona and Sharon (Hillis) Rupe of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mildred Lenihan

Mildred LenihanMildred Lenihan, 94, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Manly, died on Thursday, June 11, 2009, in Tucson.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, June 17, in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme, with Rev. David Wagner officiating. The Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner is in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred Bernice Lenihan, the daughter of George and Mary (Ludeke) Schoenwetter was born on September 1, 1914 at Garner. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and graduated from the Klemme High School. Mildred continued her education at Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She later taught in several country schools in Iowa before going to work for Wilson's Packing Company in Iowa City. She retired to the Manly area before moving to Tucson in February of 2000.

She is survived by her son, Maynard (Martha) Weisbrod of Tucson, Arizona; her grandchildren, Michelle (Julio) Martinez, Mark (Diana) Weisbrod, Michael (Loraine) Weisbrod, Mason (Michelle) Weisbrod, Allen Birkbeck and Becky (Chris) Risk; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ada Schoenwetter of Garner.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Schoenwetter; husbands, Milton Weisbrod and Richard Lenihan; daughter, Marlene Birkbeck; and brothers, Homer and Howard Schoenwetter.

Peggy L. Clark, 1929-2009

Peggy L. Clark, 79, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 19, at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church in memory of Peggy.

Peggy Clark, was born on November 23, 1929 in Flint, Michigan. She grew up in Klemme and graduated from the 4C's Business College in Des Moines in May of 1948. She met Walter Clark at college and they married on November 28, 1948. They resided in Des Moines for most of their lives. They lived briefly in Guymon, Oklahoma and spent most of their retirement years at Sun Valley, Ellston, Iowa. In college Peggy joined a sorority that continues to get together monthly for lunch. She worked at the Air National Guard for several years and was a homemaker after that.

Peggy enjoyed playing golf and playing cards. Her other hobbies included cross-stitch, knitting and ceramics. She took great pleasure in making and sharing her creations with family and friends. During their 60 years of marriage, Peggy and Walt traveled to many different places and made many friends. Peggy loved entertaining her many friends and family members at her home, which she would decorate for all occasions.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Walter; her son, Charles (Janie); her daughter, Kimberlee (Kevin) Eidson; three grandchildren, Cami Clark, Kelsey (Chris) Davis and Derek Eidson; one great-grandchild, Taylor Eidson; and a sister, Pat Simonsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Leafy Coobs, and her brother, Melvin Coobs.

Harold "Dean" Jeter, 1929-2009

Harold JeterHarold "Dean" Jeter, 79, of Garner, died on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 27, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner, with Rev. David Wagner and Justin Asche officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday, June 27. The Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner is in charge of the arrangements.

Harold Dean Jeter, the son of Marion and Eva (Siddens) Jeter, was born on July 14, 1929 at Thayer, Iowa. He attended school at Thayer. After his schooling, he farmed near Thayer and then purchased a motel in Osceola which he operated for a number of years. Dean then owned and operated a women's and children's clothing store in Osceola for a time before moving to Florida. He later returned to Iowa and was a bus driver for Jefferson Bus Lines until his retirement in 1994.

On April 17, 1993, he married Dorothy Quintus Winters at Ogden. They lived in Des Moines, Lake of the Ozarks, Florida and in 2006 moved to Garner. Dean enjoyed fishing, playing pool, boating, water skiing and horses. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Garner.

Dean is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Garner; three sons, Michael Jeter of Isanti, Minnesota, Mark (Laurie) Jeter of Excelsior, Minnesota and Marlin Jeter of Minnie Mound, Minnesota; a step-son, Parker Winters of Boone; and grandchildren, Luke Jeter, Emily Jeter, Megan (Danny) Grant, Laura Jeter, Wyatt Jeter, Maggie Jeter, Anna Jeter, Brooke Jeter, Nick Jeter and Jared Winters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marsha Jeter; a sister, Karen Jeter; and an aunt, Evia Sage.

Benjamin "Benjie" Netland, 1955-2009

Benjamin "Benjie" Netland, 54, a life long resident of Klemme, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Belmond Medical Center, Belmond, surrounded by his family, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 24, at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman officiated. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. The Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme, was in charge of the arrangements.

Benjamin Lars Netland, was born on June 21, 1955 at Klemme, the son of George and Shirley (Rapp) Netland. He was active with his family in the Klemme United Methodist Church where he was baptized. He attended Klemme Schools and participated in basketball and was an excellent football player receiving recognition for his various accomplishments in that sport. He also participated in recreational boxing. For many years he was a member of the Slippery Elm Golf Course. Benjamin married Eileen Olthoff on October 28, 1978 at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme. The couples union was blessed with two daughters, Teresa and Kimberly.

For most of his career Benjie was employed in the manufacturing and restoration of clutches and other mechanisms of agricultural machinery. Shortly after high school he was hired by Butler Manufacturing (BMD) in Klemme, where he was employed for more than 35 years. He then became a partner and president of Theobald Manufacturing in Stacyville. A few years later the partnership sold the business. 

Benjie enjoyed a life filled with family, friends and fellowship. He and Eileen looked forward to taking their girls and grandchildren on camping excursions to McIntosh Woods State Park in Clear Lake and later to Lake Cornelia. His family will cherish memories of trips to the Kansas City Zoo, Ocean's of Fun, and World's of Fun. Benjie was a big kid at heart and could often be found with the kids on the rides. His grandchildren looked forward to rides on his lawn tractors, spending time doing yard work and as his health deteriorated, watching movies. He shared his athletic talents with his daughter, Teresa and would help her train for the cross country team. He looked forward to almost any opportunity to be in the outdoors such as deer hunting, working on his small conservation area and pond, putting up a duck box, or working on his lawn.

Benjie was always tinkering in his garage and shop, listening to classic rock tunes. He loved vintage tractors and was a master at tearing down and rebuilding them from the ground up. Friends will miss time with Benjie doing flawless restorations. In recent years he had become a member of the North Iowa Antique Tractor Club. Benjie had a zest for life and lending his knowledge and labor to help others. He will also be remembered for his positive outlook on life even in his difficult battle with cancer.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Teresa Wester of Klemme and Kimberly (Jeremy) Abele of Klemme; his mother of Garner; brothers, Willard (Diane) Netland of Mesa, Arizona and Merlin Netland of Garner; sisters, Mary (Cecil) Noble of Garner, Marilyn (Duane) Roberts of Garner and Carolyn Rasmuson of Apache Junction, Arizona; grandchildren, Amanda Whitney, Michael Abele, Kaitlyn Abele, Samantha Wester, Desarae Abele, Benjamin Wester and Dominic Abele; brother-in-law, Verlyn (Kathy) Olthoff of Klemme; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Sellars of Klemme; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; sisters, Karen Lay and Wanda Netland; brother, George Netland, Jr.; and brother-in-laws, Gayle Lay and Donnie Sellars.

Luella F. Marshall, 1916-2009

Luella Faye Marshall, 92, of Clear Lake, died on Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funera1 services were held on Tuesday, June 30, at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of North Iowa and the VFW. Auxiliary.

Luella was born on July 27, 1916 in Meservey, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis W. and Lydia (Hoppe) Kennedy. She graduated from the Meservey High School in 1933. Luella married Robert Lee Marshall in 1936, in Klemme, Iowa and to this union 5 children were born. Luella and Robert farmed with their family after they were married and everyone in the family rode and had their own horse.

In 1954, Luella and Robert bought the Lighthouse Drive In, which they owned until 1976. In 1962, Luella managed the Clear Lake Sale Barn Cafe till 1976 and than she managed the Garner Sale Barn Cafe until 1986. Luella then worked at the Pronto Gas Station and Kum and Go when she was in her eighties.

Luella was famous for her pies and potato salad. She enjoyed traveling, embroidering, horses and dancing, but most of all she loved her family. Luella was also a member of the VFW. Auxiliary.

Luella is survived by her children, Marlys (Chuck) Pemble of Everly, Merle (Bev) Marshall of Garner, Marilyn (Jim) Arnold of Mason City and Mike Marshall of Loveland, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Lloyd (Sally) Kennedy of Clear Lake; and her sisters, Lucille Anderson and Lorene Haddy, both of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1959; her son, Robert in infancy; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters; 1 brother; and her special friend, Pete Bach.

Kathleen Dodson, 1943-2009

July 15, 2009

Kathleen "Kathy" Marion Dodson, age 66, a resident of Grand Terrace, California, for 41 years, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009, with her family by her bedside, of complications from Parkinson's Disease.

Private memorial services were held for her family and friends on Saturday, July 11, at her daughters home in Redlands, California. The Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapel, Redlands, California, assisted the family.

She was born on May 10, 1943 in Klemme, Iowa and moved to Long Beach, California, as a teenager where she graduated from Poly High School and met and married her husband of 46 years, Henry C. Dodson. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Henry; her two daughters, Lynette Salamanca of Grand Terrace, California and Lisa (Gary) Paprocki of Redlands, California; five grandchildren, Larissa and Phillip Salamanca and Christopher, Melissa and Megan Paprocki; two sisters, Beverly (Dennis) Morrison of Yucaipa, California and Audrey (Merlyn) Olson of Santa Maria, California; one brother, Hershel (Pat) Lemke of Rough and Ready, California; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Edith Lemke; and her brother, Gordon Lemke.
