Gerald "Jerry" Quintus, 1932-2009

July 8, 2009

Gerald "Jerry" Quintus, 77, of Garner, died on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 6, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with Lay Minister, Rose Visser officiating. Burial was in the Concord Township Cemetery in Garner. The Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner was in charge of the arrangements.

Gerald Edward Quintus, the son of Roy and Mildred (Stewart) Quintus, was born on March 24, 1932, on the family farm east of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner. Jerry graduated from the Garner High School in 1950. Following high school, he worked in the construction industry in South Dakota until his retirement. On April 22, 1994, he married Verneil Dodd at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller. They made their home in Garner.

After his retirement, Jerry drove bus for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. In May of 2008, he became a resident of the Concord Care Center. He loved his family, church, motorcycles, NASCAR, traveling and having coffee with the guys. He was an active member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller where he served on the church council and was an usher.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Verneil of Garner; children, Debbie (Steve) Crane of Rock Rapids, Sandra Rice of Rapid City, South Dakota, James (Roxanne) Quintus of Rapid City, South Dakota and Shelly (Trent) Sack of Center, North Dakota; step-children, Robert (Linda) Dodd of Klemme, Scott (Diane) Dodd of Garner, Rodney Dodd of Miller, Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Powers of Garner and Steven (Judy) Dodd of St. Louis, Missouri; mother-in-law, Helen Humphrey of Garner; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; thirteen step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia (Harlan) Haberkamp of Garner and Dorothy Jeter of Garner; a brother, Don (Lynne) Quintus of Garner; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Quintus of Hampton and Ruth Quintus of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, James; brother, Dean; sister, Margaret Allen; and brothers-in-law, Dean Jeter and Leonard Allen.

Paul M. Orr, 1927-2009

July 15, 2009

Paul M. Orr, Sr., 82, of Marshalltown, died on Monday July 6, 2009, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 9, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.E.W. The family requests all memorials to go to the Hospice of North Iowa or to the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Paul was born on April 26, 1927 in Duncombe, Iowa, the son of George and Gladys (Reckard) Orr. He attended school in Duncombe. He lived on the Brushy Farm rural Duncombe, until serving in the U.S. Army during WW II. Following the service he moved back to Fort Dodge. He married Erma Quillen in 1949. She preceded him in death in 1959. While living in Fort Dodge, he drove Midget Race Cars in Webster City. He married Marilyn Marshall in 1962. They moved to Clear Lake in 1965. Marilyn preceded Paul in death in 1987.

He worked for the Clear Lake Schools as a bus driver, "Smiley," for over nine years. He moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown in 2000. Paul attended auctioneering school and enjoyed auctioneering.

Paul is survived by four children, Sally Ellefson and her husband, Vern of Clear Lake, Paul M. Orr Jr. of Forest City, Roberta Prescott and her husband, Clayton of Garner and Barbara Oelberg of Joice; nine grandchildren, LeRoy Perteet, Matthew Flaten, Tammy Heginger, Candy Kiss, Trixy Smith, Shelly Mego, Bridgett Purcell, Chad Oelberg and Daniel Orr; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Orr and his wife, Bonnie of Sonoma, California and Loyd Orr and his wife, Margaret of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sisters, Florence Stephensen of Webster City, Laura Kilborn and her husband, Melvin of Ostrander, Minnesota and Mary Bentley and her husband, Clair of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Erma and Marilyn; infant daughter, Pauline; and two sisters, Wanda Cunningham and Rose Marie Orr.

Harry E. Hayner, 1930-2009

July 22, 2009

Harry Edward Hayner, age 79, of Klemme, Iowa, died on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, after battling cancer.

Harry's wishes were to be cremated. Harry also wished for no formal services. Because his love of fishing, a "Fish in Memory of Harry" event was held on Saturday, July 18, at the Eldred Sherwood Park Shelter (Indian Lake) located east of Goodell. The Andrews Funeral Home of Klemme was in charge of the arrangements.

Harry grew up in the Cody, Wyoming area and did various jobs. He worked for Winnebago Industries for the last 17 years. He loved to fish, read and hunt. He also loved being with his family.

Surviving Harry are wife, Arlene of Klemme; children, Mark (Marie) Hayner of Forest City, Melanie (David) Perry of Ankeny, Kristie Hayner of Klemme and Kim (Jon) Jensen of Charles City; two grandchildren, Tyler and Jordan of Ankeny; one brother, Frank (Barbara) Hayner of Cody, Wyoming; and three sisters, Harriet Humphrey and Caroline (Dwight) Trumbell, all of Cody, Wyoming and Katie (Jerry) Kuchera of Farmington, New Mexico.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Edward Hayner and Virginia (Tayler) Hayner. Also his first wife, Shirley (Whitney) Hayner and brothers, Glen and Gordon Hayner; and one brother-in-law, Dale Humphrey.

Helen J. Malek, 1915-2009

Helen MalekHelen J. Malek, 94, of Garner, died on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan. Visitation will be held from 5-8:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner, with a combined Rosary Society and Catholic Workman Rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church.

Helen Josephine Malek, the daughter of Jilji and Rose (Hejlik) Hrubes, was born on March 25, 1915, on the family farm south of Duncan. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Helen attended the rural schools of Liberty Township and the Britt High School. On September 21, 1937, she was married to Sylvester Malek at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They settled on the Malek farm northwest of Garner where she kept busy helping with the farming and raising their three children. Helen spent many years as a waitress and cook in area restaurants along with selling Stanley Home products for 38 years. She also was employed at the Britt News Tribune selling subscriptions and worked part time for 4 years at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.

In 1974, Helen and Syl retired from farming and moved into Garner. In 2004, she moved to the Concord Care Center. She enjoyed her family and supporting her husband in his band over the years. Her hobbies included bowling in women's league, gardening, playing cards, playing the button accordion and bingo. She especially enjoyed her trip to Alaska and Hawaii with Syl celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church where she sang in the choir, Catholic Workman FCSLA w52 and Rosary Society.

Helen is survived by her children, Shirley Rasche of Garner, Bob Malek (fiancée, Peg) of Garner and Donna (Don) Jacobsen of Garner; grandchildren, Shane Rasche, Ryan (Tracey) Lester, Brent (Amy) Lester, Heidi (Mike) Seaberg, Eric (Kimberly) Malek and Crystal Malek; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Payton Lester, Braydon, Jakob and Tatum Lester and Nolan and Gabby Seaberg; a sister, Mary Trca of Britt; brothers, Joe (Leona) Hrubes of Britt and Clarence (Joan) Hrubes of Garner; sisters-in-law, Margaret Hrubes of Garner and Eileen Malek of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Syl in September of 1994; son-in-law, Karl Heinz Rasche; brothers, Frank, John and Ray Hrubes; sisters, Agnes Nedved, Emily Trca, Rose Johanns and Elsie Vavrik; and brother-in-law, Ed Malek.

Deloris "Dee" Montgomery, 1934-2009

Dee MontgomeryDeloris "Dee" Montgomery, 74, of Garner, died on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at the St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, July 31, at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with Rev. Frank Beaty officiating. Burial was in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme. The Cataldo Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Deloris "Dee" Katheryn Montgomery, the daughter of Luppo and Trienna (Workman) Schriever, was born on November 10, 1934 at Bristow. She was baptized and confirmed at the Bristow Reformed Church and graduated from the Bristow High School in 1952. She attended and graduated from a lab technician school in Minneapolis and began working at a hospital in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Dee returned to Iowa in 1957 after the death of her parents. She then became the legal guardian for her younger sister and brother and worked as a lab technician at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

On January 31, 1959, she was married to Leon Casey at Mason City. They lived in Hampton where they raised their two children and Dee continued working as a lab technician at the Hampton Clinic. On September 19, 1986, she was married to Bud Montgomery. They made their home in Garner. Dee enjoyed bowling and sewing quilts at her church.

She was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church and Women's Fellowship.

Dee is survived by her husband, Bud of Garner; children, Doug (Tammie) Casey of Hampton and Barbara (Mylon) Card of Hampton; a step-daughter, Ann (Troy) FitzHenry of Mankato, Minnesota; grandchildren, Nicole, Jenna, Jordan, Emily and Chase Casey, Ciara, Rachel, Aubrey and Alexis Card and Drew and Cassandra FitzHenry; a sister, Sharron (Robert) Johnson of Latimer; a brother, LeRoy (Connie) Schriever of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Lavon (John) Young.
