PHYLLIS ANN WARWICK
April 22,
1935 - October 20, 2013
Phyllis
Ann Warwick, 78, of Coulter, passed away
on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the
Franklin Country View Nursing Facility
in Hampton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m., Saturday, October 26, at St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer with
Rev. Travis Berg officiating. Visitation
will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
Friday, October 25 at Sietsema-Vogel
Funeral Home of Hampton. Burial will
take place in the Coulter Cemetery.
Phyllis Warwick (otherwise known as
Willie) was born on April 22, 1935 to
Jeanette Williams of Eldora. She
graduated from Eldora High School in
1953, and on August 1, of that same
year, Phyllis married Allen J. Warwick.
Together, they spent their first years
living in Western Iowa, eventually
moving to Latimer in 1958 where Allen
was employed with Central Telephone
until his retirement. In 1965, the
family made their final move to the
acreage in Coulter, taking up an idyllic
small-farm life, as well. Phyllis spent
her years as homemaker; active member of
St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer,
as a member of Lutheran Ladies Aid; as a
member of the Coulter Community Center -
original site of the local Over 60s
program still currently enjoyed; and
active participant with the Franklin
County Republican Party. Another venture
she relished was her long tenure as
writer of the Coulter News for the
Hampton Times and Chronicle. She loved
working in her huge gardens and canning
her vast amount of produce to feed
anyone who ventured through the door.
Yet, Willie's pride and joy were her
four sons and their many ballgames and
activities, and grandchildren and
great-grandchildren as the family grew.
Most notably throughout her life, her
home had an open door policy where
friends, family and kids were always
welcome for lively conversation, a pot
of coffee, tacos and a "swiller" (Pepsi)
or two. Prior to her stroke in her later
years, she loved "going coffee-ing";
shopping; hosting holidays for and
pulling pranks on her family. But
listening to music, acquiring anything
pink, having dear friends of all ages

her grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and their lives on Facebook never
diminished.

KENNETH SCHAEFER
December 3,
1935 - October 21, 2013
On
Oct. 21, 2013, Kenneth Dale Schaefer
passed away peacefully in his sleep, at
the age of 77.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m.
Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at First Grace
Baptist Church, Sheffield, with Pastor
Ken Livingston presiding. Interment will
be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday at
First Grace Baptist Church.
Ken was born Dec. 3, 1935, on a farm
north of Sheffield, to George and Pearl
(Kothenbeutel) Schaefer. He graduated
from Chapin Consolidated High School in
1953. Shortly after graduation, he began
farming with his father, and continued
doing so with his wife until 1990, when
a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis
forced his retirement at a young age. At
that time, he then turned the family
farm over to his son, Gary.
Ken entered the U. S. Army Reserves in
1958, serving our country for seven
years.
On March 11, 1960, he married his wife
of 53 years, Diana Pinneke. To this
union, three children were born and
raised.
He and his wife then moved into town,
and later relocated to the Ridgestone
Golf Course in Sheffield, allowing him
to play golf, one of his favorite
activities. In 1987, he and his wife
started spending their winters in Mesa,
Ariz., due to health reasons.
That same year, he became associated
with a national senior softball team,
traveling the U.S. for various
tournaments. Ken was a co-manager, score
keeper and built many lasting
friendships with all the players. He
participated in senior softball for
seventeen years, and loved each of the
guys dearly. Coach’s wife wrote the
other day, “God must have had a big game
coming on immediately and needed a score
keeper quickly and took him to do the
job.” Ken also had a big love of his
cars and he always remarked to others,
“I never put my car to bed dirty.”
Ken also had a super good friend, Mike
Blaylock of North English, whom he met
every morning during the winter months
at 8 a.m. for their glass of soda and a
cookie, as well as to “FARM.” Together,
they were a pair and a spare. Ken also
had another dear farmer friend, Wes
Beilke of North Dakota, that he kept in
contact with frequently, and had known
since 1986. Ken may have not been able
to continue farming in Sheffield, but
found others who were former farmers
themselves, who became so dear to him
during his time spent in Arizona.
Of course, his greatest love was for his
family, as he spent many hours with all
of them, and especially will be missed
by his dear children and grandchildren,
who kept in touch through their
multitude of visits and phone
conversations. His family all looked up
to him as a mentor, asking his opinion
on a variety of matters, which made him
feel so proud.
Ken leaves behind his wife, Diana, as
well as three children: Jean (Bill)
Gallina of Krum, Texas, and children,
Anthony of Wichita Falls, Texas, and
Staci of Krum, Texas; a son, Gary
(Renee) of Sheffield, and children,
Kayla (Trevor) Nelson of Hot Springs,
Ark., and Matthew of Sheffield; a
daughter, Lori (Mark) Rempe of Pella,
and children, twins Karissa of Pella,
and Kelsi of Kansas City, Mo., and twins
Austen and Taelor of Pella. He also is
survived by two sisters, Dorothy
Schaefer of Mason City, and Ruth Ann
Schaefer of Mason City.
Ken was preceded in death by his
parents, George and Pearl Schaefer, and
his in-laws, Ted and Ruth Pinneke.
The family requests that memorial gifts
be designated to Rheumatoid Arthritis
research at Mayo Clinic, in memory of
Kenneth Schaefer, in honor of Dr. Lester
Mertz. Gifts can be mailed directly to
Mayo Clinic, Department of Development,
13400 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ
85259.
