ROGER JOHNSON
October 9, 1935 - January 28, 2013

Roger Johnson, 77, of Charles City, formerly of Hampton, died Monday, January 28, 2013, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Roger Johnson will be held 11 a.m. Friday, at the First Congregational Church in Charles City.  Pastor Forrest Cornelius will officiate.  Inurnment will be held at a later date. 
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, and at the church an hour prior to the service.    

Roger Dean Johnson was born October 9, 1935 in Thornton, the son of John and Helen (Nicolet) Johnson.  He graduated from Swaledale High School in 1955.  On June 10, 1956 he was united in marriage to Nola Bredlow at the Swaledale Methodist Church.  Over the years Roger farmed, ran the North Shore Standard Station in Clear Lake, drove truck until he retired at which time he enjoyed working for D&L Sanitation of Sheffield.  He enjoyed driving tractors, especially his John Deere Model B which he and his wife, Nola, restored, taking his grandkids for rides on the Model B, socializing and solving world problems while drinking coffee, yard work, gardening, and his cats and dogs.  Roger was a member of the First Congregational Church in Charles City. 

Living family members include his wife Nola, of Charles City; children, Steve (Krystal) Johnson of Charles City, Connie (Kim) Weyant of Boone, Brian (Jessica) Johnson of Hampton; grandchildren, Garald (Jenny) Rivers, Josh Hovenga, Brandy Rivers, Jesse and Jared Johnson, Brandon, Chris, and Ashley Kew, Brayden, and Carter Johnson; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Ally, and Emma; siblings, Mavis (Marius) Floy of Thornton, Bob (Judy) Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters-in-law Letha (Keith) Markwardt, Myra (Dale) Karsjens, Vel (Jerry) Mondahl, and Marlene Bredlow; and many nieces and nephews.   
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marlys Pitkin; and three brothers-in-law, Dennis, Delmer, and Duane Bredlow.

DONALD LOUIS OITZMAN
June 9, 1930 - January 30, 2013

On January 30, 2013 God called Don to the first tee at the "Eden Hills Golf Course" in Heaven.

Waiting for him on the tee box was a foursome consisting of his parents, Louis & Lena Oitzman, his brother Robert and sister Helen Klousia. Have a great game Don we know we will someday be joining you at the 19th hole for the greatest reunion ever.

Sadly waiting in the gallery are his loving wife, Dora, sons Doug (Glenda), Gilbert, AZ, Jeff (Janet), Chandler, AZ, Tim (Molly), Rancho Santa Fe, CA, step-daughter Lisa (Michael) Lasch, Pflugerville, TX and step-son Troy Miller, Phoenix, AZ. Also, 7 loving grandchildren, Krystal Stegmaier (Paul) IL, Abby Chavaz (Casey) CA, Ashley & Paige Oitzman, Chandler, AZ, Teddy & Megan Oitzman CA and Brandon Lasch TX.

He is also survived by three of the greatest great-grandchildren, Landon Stegmaier IL, Samantha and Ariella Chavaz CA, all who will miss their Papa greatly. Also waiting in the gallery are his three favorite golf partners, Vern (Rita) Oitzman Mesa, AZ, Richard (Doris) Oitzman Apple Valley, CA, and Arne Bongart, Mesa, AZ (his weekly DQ Blizzard & BJ clam chowder deliveryman).

Don was born in Caledonia, MN, June 9, 1930 and lived most of his life in and around the Hampton, IA area. In 1949 he married Twila Noelting, the mother of his three sons. In 1980 he moved to Mesa, AZ and married Dora Homer-Miller and they have resided there since. He was a builder most of his life and after moving to Arizona he became a contractor building material salesman. After retiring he entered a second career as a home inspector which he pursued until 2006.

During his lifetime Don attended schools in Chapin and Hampton, IA. He became a journeyman carpenter at the age of seventeen. By the age of twenty-five he owned his own company (Oitzman Construction) and built many homes, commercial buildings and farm buildings in Butler and Franklin counties in Iowa.

Sometime later he incorporated Oitzman Lumber Co. with Oitzman Construction. While living in Iowa he was a 27 year member of the Lions Club, 16 year member of the Dumont fire department, serving 8 years as Fire Chief. He was a member of the city council and held various positions in his church.

Don was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in any sport they were involved in. He and Dora were avid travelers and cruisers and have enjoyed many wonderful experiences around the world. Golf was a big part of his life and he always looked forward to Thanksgiving weekend when family and friends gathered for the "Oitzman Turkey Shoot-Out," a two day golf tournament held every year for the past 16 years. He won the trophy twice.

Arrangements are being handled by Mountain View Mortuary in Mesa, AZ with a private family internment. A Celebration of Life will be held February 9, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. at the Club Room at Leisure World in Mesa, AZ. In lieu of flowers, those wanting too, may make a donation to Hospice of the Valley at 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona, or their favorite charity.


MELVIN PEYTON  
February 5, 1919 - February 2, 2013
 
Melvin Harrison Peyton, 93, of Sheffield, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at the Sheffield Care Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at First Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, with Pastor Ken Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Retz Funeral Home in Sheffield is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Dows, Iowa, to Harry and Mabel (Sarber) Peyton. He attended school there.

On Sept. 16, 1939, he married Eva Pletcher in Clarion. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart medal.

Following his discharge, he and Eva moved to Chicago, Ill., where he drove truck. Sometime later, he moved to Michigan before moving to a farm in rural Dougherty, Iowa in 1963. He and Eva farmed for many years. Prior to selling the farm, he worked for the Farmer’s Co-op in Aredale until 1981.

Sometime after his retirement, the couple moved into Aredale, where they lived until moving to Hampton. In 2008, they moved to the Sheffield Care Center. The couple owned and operated Peyton’s Place Grocery Story in Aredale for many years. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Aredale, Iowa.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Smit of Sheffield; a son, Mark Peyton of Arizona; a son-in-law, Alan (Pete) Marsh of Lincoln, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Angie Peyton of Falmouth, Mass.; grandchildren, Debbie (Randy) Irmen of Fergus Falls, Minn., Jeff Peyton of Cape Cod, Mass., Terry (Penny) McCaslin of Sheffield, Kevin (Sara) McCaslin of Rockford , Leona (John) Hughes, Penny (Jeff) Bailey and Nikole (Mike) Stonecipher, all of Lincoln, Ill., Vickie (Tony) French of Big Sandy, Tenn., Theresa (Randy) Spivey of Huntington, Tenn., Candace McCaslin of Texas, and Amanda Peyton Davidson of Tulsa, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Victoria Link and Ryan Link, Cody Peyton, Genny McCaslin (fiance Caleb Mosel), JC (Jill) McCaslin, Kyle McCaslin (fiancé Cassie Willert) and Abby McCaslin, Chris McCaslin, Brianna McCaslin and Logan McCaslin, Loren and Landon French, Peyton and Levi Spivey, Naomi Bailey, and Emily, Isabelle and Addison Stonecipher; five great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Doris, Connie and Lois.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Eva; a son, Larry in 1966; a daughter, Linda in 2010; a son, Terrence in 2011; two grandsons, Timothy and Daniel McCaslin; a son-in-law, Dale Smit; a daughter-in-law, Tommie (Peyton) Forrest; three sisters; a brother; and several sisters- and brothers-in-law.  


MARLYN MILLER

June 23, 1931-Jan. 28, 2013

arlyn Miller, 81, of Alden, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at his home in Alden. Services were held Friday, Feb. 1, at the United Methodist Church in Alden with inurnment in the Alden Cemetery. The Surls Funeral Home of Alden was in charge of arrangements.

Marlyn L. Miller was born June 23, 1931, in Bradford, the son of Robert and Violet (Fraser) Miller. He graduated from the Hampton High School. He was in the U.S. Army and served in Korea.

Marlyn was united in marriage to Charlotte Huse at the Alden United Methodist Church. Marlyn had worked at Cargill, retiring in 1998. He occupied his time gardening and repairing machinery.

Marlyn is survived by his wife, Charlotte; three sons, Robert of Ames, Gary of Pella, and Dennis of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, DeeAnna Zauala of Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Rose Kissinger of Melcher, and Gladys Boyington of Salem, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Grace Bullard and Wilma Crandall; and a brother, John Miller.


DARLENE FEIKES
June 13, 1930 -January 28, 2013

Darlene Feikes, age 82, of Ackley died on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Peter's Country Church in rural Wellsburg with inurnment at the church cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the Sietsema Funeral Home in Ackley.

Darlene June Feikes was born on June 13, 1930 in Wellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Jerry and Tillie (Boelman) DeVries. She was united in marriage to Henry Feikes on December 29, 1950 at the East Friesland Parsonage. She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ at rural Wellsburg.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Henry; a daughter, Diane (Calvin) Werkman of Wellsburg; a son, Dean (Janet) Feikes of Ackley; two granddaughters, Lindsey Feikes of Rochester, MN and Tara Feikes of Cedar Falls; and a brother, Leo (Jo) DeVries of Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her parents.


ELIZABETH I. NOLTE
June 27, 1917 - December 29, 2012

Beth Nolte, lifelong resident of Hampton passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. She was 95 years old. A memorial service will be held at the First Methodist Church in Hampton on February 11, 2013 at 3 PM. The family requests no flowers or memorials.

Elizabeth Irene (Wallace) Nolte was born on June 27, 1917, in Hampton, the daughter of Harvey J. and Nettle G. Wallace. After graduating from Hampton High school in 1936, she attended Iowa State University for one year before returning home to begin a career at Hampton State Bank where she became the head cashier during her 20 plus years of employment. Following a short retirement she became the bookkeeper for Cashway Lumber where she worked for another 20 years, retiring for good in 1987.

On November 19, 1950 she married Charles (Kelly) W. Nolte. Beth was active in Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Hampton Cemetery Society, Business and Professional Women (BPW) and the Methodist Church.

Survivors include a nephew, Major General (Ret) Stewart W. Wallace of Tucson, Arizona; a niece, Carolyn Furlong of Centennial, Colorado; a grand niece, Cassandra Mangan of Indianapolis, Indiana; a grand nephew, Scott Wallace of Kuwait City, Kuwait and 5 great grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kelly and two brothers, Wilmer and Dale.

Service arrangements are by Sietsema Vogel Funeral Homes of Hampton.


HOMER CARROLL NOREM
February 25, 1932 - February 3, 2013

Homer Norem, 80, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls. Funeral services for Homer Norem will be 10:30 Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, 212 West Street, Alden, Iowa. A time of visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Tuesday, February 5th at the Linn's Funeral Home 1521 Washington Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa. Homer Carroll Norem was born February 25, 1932 at his parents home outside of Radcliffe in Hamilton County, Iowa, the son of Selmer Gerhard Norem and Bessie Mae [Johnson] Norem. He attended the Radcliffe and Williams Community Schools. Homer enlisted in the Untied States Navy and retired after 20 years of service in 1973. On March 11, 1978 Homer was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Harms at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. While serving in the Navy Homer also worked for Abbott Laboratory in North Chicago, Illinois and after his Navy retirement Homer worked for American Cyanamid, Alden, Iowa and Meadow Hills Golf Course until 2000. Homer was a member of the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, Alden, Iowa; Hyman Peavey American Legion Post # 188, Iowa Falls [Past Commander and former member of the Honor Guard], and a member of the Meadow Hills Golf Course. He enjoyed bow hunting, woodworking, fishing, playing cards with friends, golfing, going to the Casino, and especially spending time his family.

Homer Norem is survived by his wife: Beverly Norem of Iowa Falls; his step daughters: Sheri Quasdorf of Iowa Falls, Linda [Marshall] Christensen of Iowa Falls, Lori Smith of Iowa Falls; an ex daughter-in-law: Roxanne [Doug] Heikens of Wellsburg, Iowa; an ex son-in-law: Don Quasdorf of Alden, Iowa; three grandsons: Dustin Brown [fiancée Heather Jensen], Ryan Christensen, Dr. Kyle Quasdorf; two sisters: Bertha Borschel of Iowa Falls, Wilma Boheman of Branson, Missouri; two brothers: Leland [Irene] Norem of Garden City, Iowa, and Lyle [Vera] Norem of Ackley, Iowa; and a sister-in-law: Minnie Norem of Ames, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents: Selmer and Bessie Norem; two sisters: Shirley Ellsberry, Selma Pepperling; and four brothers: Gerhard Norem, Joe Norem, and Sam Norem, and Burdette Norem.


LUCY LOISE CHRISTOPHERSON
July 3, 1921 - January 26, 2013

Lucy Loise (Benter) Christopherson, 91, of Allison, Iowa passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the Allison Rehabilitation Center in Allison.

She was born July 3, 1921, in Allison, Iowa to Charles and Christena (Weigman) Benter. Lucy graduated from Allison High School in 1939. After graduation she worked for the local dentist for over nine years.

During that time she was united in marriage to Roger Christopherson on January 1, 1948, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. They then moved to Doughterty for 39 years on Roger's parent's farm. In 1987 they moved back to Allison to enjoy their retirement. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison.

Lucy is survived by her sister-in-law Maxine Naber and brother-in-law Howard Christopherson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roger, two brothers Gilbert and Merlen Benter, brother-in-law Harvey Christopherson and sister-in-law Faye Dohrmann.

Burial is at the Allison Cemetery in Allison, Iowa.

Arnold (A.C.) Benton
September 28, 1929 - February 7, 2013 

Arnold (A.C.) Benton, 83, of Hampton, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa. A.C. was born on Sept. 28, 1929 on the family farm in Guthrie County, Iowa to Charley and Helen (Sheeder) Benton.

He graduated from Guthrie Center, Iowa high school in 1947. After high school he had several jobs before coming to Hampton in Jan. of 1950, to sell John Deere machinery for the company store.

This started his long career in the John Deere business. He bought the company store in the early 1950's and continued in the business until 1985. At one time he had three stores, Hampton, Iowa Falls, and Geneva. For many years he was the highest volume dealer in the Moline branch of the John Deere Company.

During his years with Deere he acquired many acres of land in Northern Iowa and also Southern Iowa. Farming the land was one of the great joys of his life.

A.C. was united in marriage to Neva Davis on Jan. 25, 1960. After marriage they made their home in Hampton.

After selling the dealership and much of the land A.C. and Neva started a new phase of their lives in Reno, Nevada. In 1995 he became a major investor in a startup bank in Reno. He was a director on the bank board for 15 years. He enjoyed this very much, as he had been involved with different banks over the years.

A.C. was a very generous person. Nothing gave him more joy than helping people in need. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing with his son and grandson. During their 53 years of marriage A.C. and Neva enjoyed traveling to many countries, seeing different cultures.

A.C. is survived by his wife Neva of Hampton, son David Benton of Hampton, daughter Terry (Jeff) Markham of Bend, Oregon, three grandchildren, Joel Benton of Hampton, Amanda Markham of Chicago, and Molly (Adam) Baslow of Charleston, South Carolina, also three great grandchildren and two sisters Doris (Don) Laughery of Guthrie Center and Darlene Stringham of Guthrie Center. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Tim.


In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or a Charity of your choice.


Ely Joseph Hawley

Infant Ely Joesph Hawley, son of Victoria Woltjer and Zachariah Hawley, of Bristow, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Ely is survived by his parents Victoria and Zachariah, grandparents Vick and Robin Woltjer of Hampton and Arthur and Barbara Hawley of New York, sister Brealyn Hawley and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfathers Pug Simpson and George Heitland and great great-grandparents Lee and Gladys Lemke and Floyd and Phyllis Sthore.

Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.


James M. Hannah
January 23, 1932 - February 10, 2013 

James "Toad" Hannah, 81, of Hansell, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

He was born January 23, 1932, in Hampton, Iowa, to William and Winifred (McKinney) Hannah. Toad graduated from Hansell High School and then served his country in the United States Marie Corp, during the Korean Conflict.

He was married on January 11, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, to Doris Paulus. Toad worked all of this life as a farmer. He was a Charter member of the Hansell United Methodist Church after the closing of the Hansell Church, he was a member of the West Fork United Methodist Church and the Dumont American Legion.

Toad's passion in life was farming and still was active in the daily operations.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, never missing any of their events.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Doris Hannah of Hansell, daughter Pam and husband Greg Giddings of Hampton, son Dave and wife Becky Hannah of Hampton, grandchildren Matt (Amy) Giddings, Brandon (Nichole) Giddings, Sarah (Quinn) Showalter, Jennifer (Joshua) Shaw, Brian (Valerie) Hannah and Drew Hannah, great grandchildren Kailee, Maddison, Ayden, Alex and Jake Giddings, Will and Graham Showalter, Mason Shaw and Harley Hannah, brother Bill and Marilyn Hannah of Hampton, Dick Hannah of Kellogg, sister Jo Ghrist of Des Moines.

Toad was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Mary.

Burial will take place at the Ingham Township Cemetery in Hansell, Iowa


Shirley A. From
June 19, 1917 - February 2, 2013 

Shirley A. From, 95, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 2, 2013 in Iowa City after a brief illness. Shirley was born on June 19, 1917 in Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth and Irma McDowell.

In 1941 Shirley met Alfred From; they were married in 1942 and settled in West Des Moines. In addition to raising her son she worked for 31 years as a secretary in the tax division with the Internal Revenue Service until her retirement in 1976. During her retirement Shirley took great pleasure taking tickets at the Val Air Ballroom during special occasion dances. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and loved singing with the Sweet Adelines. In 2007 Shirley left West Des Moines and moved to Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City to be closer to her family.

Shirley will be greatly missed by family including her son, Dr. Robert From (Louise From) of Iowa City; her grandchildren, Dr. Aaron From (Dr. Deana Hoganson) of Des Moines, Ryan From of Iowa City and Alex From of West Des Moines; her great-grandchildren, Lillian and Gwenyth From ; her sister-in-law, Grace McDowell of Hampton; her nieces, Marcia Morlan (Dennis Morlan) of Jefferson and Rebecca From Siepel of Earlham; and her nephews Bruce McDowell, Allen McDowell, Mark McDowell (Connie) of Hampton and Dr. Joel From (Shayla From) of West Des Moines. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; her parents; her sister, Marjorie Beth McDowell Siegman; her brother, Bob McDowell; and her sister-in-law, Charlotte From and brother-in-law, Dr. Paul From.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and to Oaknoll Retirement Residence for the exceptional care they gave our mother over the years.

Services will be held at McLarens Resthaven Chapel, 801 - 19th Street in West Des Moines on Saturday, February 9th. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. with the funeral to follow at 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations can be sent in her name to the family.

Magdalene Irene Siddell
June 29, 1925 - February 15, 2013 

Magdalene Irene (Stafford) Siddell, 87, of Hampton, formerly of Dumont, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

She was born the daughter of Benjamin and Johanna (Ackerman) Stafford on June 29, 1925, in Hampton. Magdalene graduated from Dumont High School and from Hamilton College. She was united in marriage to Ray Schwab; one daughter Jacalyn Rae to this union was born.

Magdalene was employed by Auto Parts Co. in Des Moines, for several area banks, 17 years at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids and 4 years for Mc Donald Douglas Corp. in Saudia Arabia. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hampton. Magdalene was an avid Hawkeye fan. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and spending time with her great-grandchildren.

Magdalene is survived by her grandson Troy (Jean) Franke of Dumont, granddaughter Cindy (Rod) Arjes of Dumont, grandson Todd (Brandy) Franke of Dumont and great-grandchildren Trevor, Alexa, Maci, Kaci Leighcen, Landon, Louden, Cole and Carli.

She was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Johanna and daughter Jacalyn.

Burial will take place in the Dumont Cemetery at a later date.

Marlyn E. Olson, 85, of Iowa Falls, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Ellsworth
Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, at the United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with burial at Union Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Saturday with a Masonic service at 5 p.m. at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. Marlyn was born Dec. 17, 1927, to Elmer and Hazel (Walton) Olson in Iowa Falls. Marlyn graduated from the Popejoy High School and then he was drafted into the United States Army and was a World War II veteran stationed in Korea. On June 8, 1952, Marlyn was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Hamilton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and a former member of the Lion’s Club. Marlyn was one of the board directors of Farmers Mutual Insurance for 24 years and served 15 years on the Alden Elevator Board.

Marlyn is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Jeff (Donna) Olson of Colleyville, Texas; two daughters, Becky (Kelly) Rice of Jefferson, Iowa, and Andrea (John) Dickkut of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Nick Collogan of Grand Junction, Iowa, Marshall (Karen) Olson of Houston, Texas, Chelsea Dickkut of Westminster, Colo., Katie and Kurtis Rice of Jefferson, Iowa, and John A. Dickkut of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Roberta Garland.


Melva M. Waite
Jan. 18, 1918-Feb. 18, 2013


Melva M. Waite, 95, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Park Centre Health Care. Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls with interment at Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls. The family will greet family and friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, First United Methodist Church in Newton or Good Samaritan Fund at Park Centre in Newton. The Surls Funeral Home of Iowa Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Melva was born Jan. 18, 1918, in Laurens, Iowa. She was a longtime resident of Iowa Falls moving to Park Centre, Newton, in 2007 to be near her daughter, Jane Hollander, and husband Tom, of Newton. Melva was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, Ladies’ Elks, Highland Country Club, Ellsworth Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the church, Goodwill and Meals on Wheels. In 1955 Melva started her employment at Ellsworth Community College as financial secretary to the dean, retiring in 1975. She and Al were longtime Iowa State Cyclone fans. After retiring, their winters were spent in Santa Barbara, Calif. Melva was a loving and devoted wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Melva is survived by her daughter, Jane Hollander (Tom) of Newton; son, Jack (Donna) of Lompoc, Calif.; granddaughter, Sara Van Manen (Todd) of Newton; grandsons, Marc Hollander (Mandy) of West Des Moines, Major Adam Waite (Eve) of McGuire AFB, N.J, and Andrew Waite of Santa Clarita, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Lauren and Ashlyn Van Manen of Newton, Madeline and Malcolm Hollander of West Des Moines, Isaac Waite of McGuire AFB, N.J.; sisters, Ethel Locke, Ames, Doris Ringham, Burlington, and Joyce Sanders, Waukee; sisters- in-law, Eunice Davis, Olympia, Wash., Edna Davis, Humboldt, Rose Waite, Chester, Va., and Nellie Gray, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Al; parents, Joseph and Eva Davis; a daughter-in-law, Sue Waite; two brothers; and three brothers-in-law.


Dorothy Chaplin 
October 13, 1917 - February 16, 2013

Dorothy Chaplin, age 95, of Iowa Falls, died on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the Roxy Ann Memory Center in Medford, Oregon. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the St. Marks Catholic Church in Iowa Falls with burial at Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 5-7 with a 7:00 rosary service at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Dorothy Leona Chaplin was born Oct. 13, 1917, to Carl and Jennie (Kessler) Fischer in Dunlap, Iowa. In 1928, Dorothy and her family moved to Iowa Falls. Dorothy graduated from Iowa Falls High School and received her teaching degree at Ellsworth Community College. On July 12, 1938, Dorothy was united in marriage to Leo G. Chaplin in Iowa Falls. After farming many years with Leo, who died in 1960, Dorothy started the Mode O'Day store at 508 Washington St., Iowa Falls, in June 1962 and later expanded the store into Dorothy's Fashions. Dorothy owned Dorothy's Fashions, a woman's clothing store, for 45 years and retired at the age of 90 and one half years. She was an active member of the community and was involved with St. Mark's Catholic Church, the Iowa Falls Chamber of Commerce, BPW (Business Professional Woman's Club), Mary Lane Club, Birthday Club as well as a former librarian at the Ellsworth Community College for 17 years.

Dorothy is survived by daughter Karen McLaughlin of Central Point, Ore.; son James Chaplin of Gold Hill, Ore.; son Marion Chaplin of Central Point, Ore.; son-in-law Steve Ball of Iowa Falls; sister Lois Donegan of Custer Park, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; daughter, Janice Ball; sister, Mary Ann Donars; brother, Mike Fischer; brother, Ed Fischer; and her parents.

Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family and friends; however, we are sure that she has gone on to be in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.


Emil August Noelck
January 5, 1917 - February 19, 2013

Emil August Noelck, 96, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away, Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa.  He was born January 5, 1917, in Arcadia, Iowa, to William and Margaret (Herrmann) Noelck. 

Emil attended country schools.  He was married on March 15, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Audubon County, Iowa, to Inger Marie Faaborg, and they enjoyed 62 loving years together.  He farmed in the Kimballton area for many years and then moved his family to the Hampton area in 1960. Emil worked at Farmers Hybrid and Seabee Corporation, but he was always a farmer at heart. 

He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton, he was also a church board member at the Kimballton Lutheran Church and the St. John's Lutheran Church, and was on the school board for Sharon Township # 8 country school.  He had a wonderful sense of humor.

Emil enjoyed family and farming, family fishing trips to Okoboji, living at Beeds Lake, playing Irish pitch at every family gathering, traveling, and just being with people. One of his true loves in life was attending all of his grandchildren's sporting activities, rarely missing an event. 

He is survived by his daughter Jane and husband Roy Overturf of Nashua, son Ivan and wife Karen Noelck of Hampton, son Carl and wife Rhonda Noelck of Latimer, grandchildren Todd Overturf, Joel (Deborah Jackson) Overturf, Niki Overturf, Is (Kristin) Noelck, Isaac Noelck, C.J. (Jenny) Noelck, and Jeromy Noelck, great grandchildren Isaiah, Noah, Isabella, Lexi and Caden Noelck, Spring, Harris and Cody Jackson, great great grandchildren Austin, Jennica and Eli, brother Walter and wife Joan Noelck of Ross, sister-in-laws Alice Noelck of Melcher, Ruth Noelck of Geneva,. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers Elmer, Melvin and Bill, two grandchildren Tony and Karie.

Burial will take place at the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Hampton.


Raymond H. Miller
June 11, 1925 - February 22, 2013

Mr. Raymond Miller, age 87, of Orange City, Iowa, formerly of Hampton and Mason City, Iowa, and Indiana, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013, at his daughter’s home in Alton, Iowa.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, February 25, at 9:00am, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Daumer will officiate.

There will be a graveside service on Monday, at 3:00pm, at the Hampton City Cemetery, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, from 1:45pm to 2:45pm, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Raymond Henry was born on June 11, 1925, in Geneva, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Sadie (Uilk) Miller. He also had a step-father, August Burmester. He was raised at Geneva, where he attended a country school, and Hampton, where he graduated from the Community High School. He also attended the University of Ohio in Miami. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, where he enlisted as a Sonar Technician.

As an adult, he made his home in Meservey, Iowa, and Mason City, where he married Shirley Ann McMath on May 15, 1976. They lived in Terril, Iowa, and Walton, Indiana, until May 1, 2011, when they moved to Orange City.

Over the years, “Ray” had many jobs, including paper boy, attendant at the Petty Gas Station, driver at a hearse and ambulance service, delivery man at Saylors Grocery, and assistant at Chaffin Hardware and Plumbing. He was also employed at the Naval Air Corporation, Miami University, Equitable Life Insurance, Merservy Bank branch, Miller Implement, and Terril Bank branch. In addition, he participated in family farming.

He was a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and several service clubs. He enjoyed family activities, working in his shop, and carpentry.

Survivors include his wife of more than 36 years; three sons, David Miller, and his wife, Ruthie, of Mason City; Steven Miller, of Garden Grove, California; and Terrence Wass, and his wife, Shari, of Franklin, Wisconsin; two daughters, Caprice, and her husband, Scott Buchboltz, of Orange City; and Nichole, and her husband, Jeff Kliegl, of Alton; eight grandchildren, Hayes and Abby Wass, Alex and Jaquie Moffitt, Toby and Raef Huffman, and Raya and Riley Kliegl; a sister, Dorothy Fink, of Hampton; a step-sister, Elnora Brewster, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Miller, of Hampton.

In addition to his parents and step-father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Rother; two brothers, Elmer and Leroy Miller; and a step-brother, Norman Burmester.
