DIANE M. (Vsetecka) HOWE

Diane M. (Vsetecka) Howe, of Mason City, passed away peacefully Friday Jan. 31, 2014 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn, from a rare form of cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 5, 2014 at Epiphany Parish – St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street SE, Mason City. Visitation will be held at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel from 4 -8 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 4, 2014, with a Scriptural Wake at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Elmwood/St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Those who desire may leave memorials to the American Cancer Society or Lime Creek Nature Center in Diane’s Memory.

Diane was born Nov. 24, 1950 to Frank and Phyllis (Sabelka) Vsetecka, New Hampton. Diane graduated from Turkey Valley High School (Jackson Junction) and from Hamilton Business College, Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Denny Howe on Feb. 23, 1974. From this union they had 2 children, Angie and Jason. Diane and Denny made their first home in Maryville, Missouri. While in Maryville, Diane worked part time for the Social Security Administration and for Denny at Hy-Vee. They moved back to Mason City when Denny was selected to head the meat department at the new Hy-Vee East store in 1976.

In 1991, Diane was employed by the Principal Financial Group in Mason City until the time of her death.
Diane was a person of determination and many talents. She loved downhill and cross-country skiing, photography, shopping, bicycling and refinishing furniture. She also enjoyed playing golf, watching HGTV and watching birds and wildlife. Her passion was gardening and was a member of the Iowa State Master Gardner’s Club and Lime Creek Nature Center.

Her special time with family included spending Thursdays with her oldest granddaughter Madison and traveling with Denny to Arizona, Florida and Alaska. She loved riding with Denny on their Harley as well as going on rides with their friends. She especially enjoyed hosting family holidays, as well as decorating her home for the holidays.

All of her grandchildren were special to her. She enjoyed taking them to fireworks on the 4th of July as well as area parades. Diane also took her grandchildren to kid’s day at the Spencer fair each year. Diane also taught her granddaughters how to sew doll clothes. Diane was a sponsor for her granddaughter, Madison’s confirmation studies.

Breakfast was her favorite meal and she particularly enjoyed going out for breakfast after church on Sundays. Diane was a member of Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Maria’s circle. She was the Godmother to Danny Fuller and Michael Vsetecka.

Diane is survived by her husband, Denny of Mason City; daughter, Angela Ewalt (Nate), of Spencer; son, Jason (Shantel), of Mason City; stepson, Brian (Kathy Lubbert), of Rockford; 7 grandchildren, Caleb, Madison, Ashley, Emily, Landon, Allie and Evan. Also surviving is her mother Phyllis Vsetecka; brothers, Leon, Keith, Rick, Dave, and sister, Karen as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Vsetecka; brother, Larry; her grandparents and her granddaughter Allison Ewalt.

Darlyene M. Iverson, age 83, of Decorah, IA, died Sunday, February 2, 2014 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 7, 2014 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, IA with Pastor Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah in the spring.

Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 6 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and on Friday after 10:00 A.M., one hour before the service, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church.

Darlyene Mae Iverson was born January 27, 1931 in Decorah, Iowa to Leonard and Lillian (Severson) Iverson. She was baptized on March 1, 1931 at Decorah Lutheran Church and confirmed on November 27, 1945 at Hesper Lutheran Church. Darlyene graduated from Mabel High School in Mabel, Minnesota with the class of 1949.

She started working at Reardon’s Produce in Decorah, and then worked at Decorah State Bank for 28 years, retiring in 1993. She was a bank teller and then a student loan officer. It was a position she was very proud of because she gave out loans to students for college, then really enjoyed seeing them succeed in getting their education. Darlyene loved to travel and some of memorable her trips were to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland. She was a member of Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum and enjoyed helping with Nordic Fest, she loved to sing and was a member of Sweet Adeline’s, and she was an avid walker and enjoyed walking all over town. She also loved gardening and flowers and caring for the yard. Darlyene has been a long time member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church and was very active in the Altar Guild and Circle. She became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in October 2007.

There are no immediate survivors.

She was preceded in death by her parents.


MARION K. HANNEMANN

Marion K. Hannemann age 93 of Nashua died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m.Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Nashua with Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by her two surviving children. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery with Troy Hannemann, Matt Hannemann, Wayde Henry, Tom Henry, Ronald Gibson, Michael J. Hannemann and Mike Hannemann serving as pallbearers.

Marion Katherine Hannemann was born June 7, 1920, in Nashua, the daughter of John Joseph and Elizabeth Marie (Felton) Haag. She received her education in Nashua, graduating from the Nashua High School in 1938. On June 7, 1938, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, Marion was united in marriage to Paul A. “Bud” Hannemann. To this union six children were born. The couple farmed west of Nashua for many years and moved into Nashua in1986. Marion and Bud spent many weekends fishing at the Mississippi and camping at the Red Barn in Lansing. They often took neighbors and card-club friends for long weekends of fishing. Marion enjoyed telling her stories about their adventures. She will be remembered for being a wonderful homemaker who cared for her growing family. She always had a large garden to meet her families needs and enjoyed being involved in her card-club and making rugs with her antique loom. Marion had also worked for several years in the Nashua High School cafeteria. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Guild.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary (Johnny) Gibson of Wheatland, Calif; one son, Tod (Christy Gregory) Hannemann of Denver, Colo; fourteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul on August 16, 2001;two daughters, Deanna M. Green in 1995, Judith A. Hannemann in 2000; two sons, Paul A. Hannemann Jr. in 1966, Tommy G.Hannemann in 1999; five sisters, Mary Jane Haag, Margaret Ransom, Susie Monroe,Christine Hvitved and Garland Jensen.

Steven W. Fleming

Steven W. Fleming age 58 of Nashua, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Nashua with Msgr. John Hemann celebrating the mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by the family.

Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Nashua with Roger Fleming, Jennifer Fleming, James Fleming, David Fleming, Dennis McLane, Sara Groomes, Jeff Hobert and Josh Hobert serving as pallbearers.

Steven Wayne Fleming was born Dec. 17, 1955, in rural Oelwein, the son of Wayne and Lucille (Baines) Fleming-Fox. He attended school at Wapsie Valley, and graduated from Oelwein High School in 1974. While in high school, he became an apprentice for Moore’s Construction. He then went to work for Cudahy (Iowa Ham) for over 10 years. Steve then worked on various bridge/construction crews traveling to new destinations. He did this for 10 years. Steve was introduced to Pamela Barker and the couple was married in May of 1974. To this union one daughter, Becky, was born. The couple later divorced.

Steve went back to school and received a degree in Computer-Aided Design “CAD”, from Southeast Iowa Community College. After the completion of his degree, he accepted a job with Featherlite Trailers, designing trailers for the company. He worked for Featherlite for 13 years. Steve met Debbie Schmidt and the couple was married October 25, 2002, at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. The couple later moved to Eagle Grove, where Steve began working for Eagle Manufacturing designing corn stoves. Steve and Deb moved to Nashua in 2010.

Steve enjoyed horses, watching westerns, and especially Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Steve enjoyed being a judge at local rodeos in the area. He was an avid enthusiast and collector of Harley’s. He had a custom built trike that he and Debbie would take on long trips and many weekend rides together. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Steve also found great comfort and strength in his faith.

Left to cherish Steve’s memory are his wife, Debbie Fleming of Nashua; three daughters, Becky (Dennis) McLane of Oelwein, Misty (Jeff) Hobert of Nashua and Vonda (Tyrone) Jacoby of Carthage, Ill; two sons, Evan (Laura) Schmidt of Elma and Noel Schmidt of Fredericksburg, VA; fifteen grandchildren; along with several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and many other family and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rita Barker.


John Frank Dann

John Frank Dann age 64 of Nashua died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua with Pastor Shawn Greer of the First Baptist Church in Plainfield officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, with Richard Bunn, Michael Bill, Kendall Cordes, Matt Hoffman, Tony Hoffman and Chris Dann serving as pallbearers.

John Frank Dann was born June 6, 1922, in Charles City, the son of Frank and Dorothy (Taylor) Dann. During his youth he enjoyed helping his family outdoors and loved raising chickens. He received his education in Nashua, graduating from the Nashua High School in 1967. He then served in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge. John later attended NICC in Calmar for plumbing. He enjoyed time with his great-niece, Victoria, working in the garden, planting trees, reading and his cat, "Bandit". He will be remembered by his family as a gentle and generous man.

Survivors include five brothers, Robert (Sharrill) Dann, Ron (Joyce) Dann, all of Nashua, James (Cheri) Dann of Greene, Bruce (Diane) Dann of Charles City, Timothy (SHirley) Dann of Nashua; three sisters, Mary Madden, Diana Wiles, both of Charles City, Barbara Zelmer of Mason City; sister-in-law, Kim Dann of Georgia; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dennis and Thomas Dann.


Stanley Burton Feuchtwanger

Stanley Burton Feuchtwanger, 91, of Waverly, and formerly of Frederika,  passed away on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Stanley was born on Sept. 29, 1922, in Chickasaw County, near Ionia, the son of Bert and Helen (Sheldon) Feuchtwanger. He attended school and graduated from Nashua High School. On December 9, 1945, he was united in marriage to Doris Muench, on the Muench family farm near Ionia.

Stan was “A farmer with numerous enterprising endeavors.” Not only did he repair broken items, but was also creative in designing and building new things. For example, in Frederika, he built a three level home in a lime quarry. His workshop was in the bottom level and the home also included a much prided elevator! Stan also made an eight row planter before they could ever be purchased. Together, Stan and Doris enjoyed wintering in Florida.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters, Diana (Larry) Konkle of Sun Prairie, Wisc., and Judy (Gerry) Gress of Waverly; four grandchildren, Darby Cooper, Andy Konkle, Annette Riese, Jessica Carfrae; four great-grandchildren, Drew Carfrae, Riley Cooper, Adam Riese and Liam Riese; a brother, Ralph (Shirley) Feuchtwanger; a sister, Lucille Mathews; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Joshua Cooper, and a still born son.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, Feb., 21, 2014, at the Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, in Waverly. Pastor Alan Bidne will officiate. Lorraine J. Gratz

Lorraine J. Gratz, age 90 of New Hampton, died Saturday Feb. 15, 2014 at her home.

A Memorial Mass will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Interment will take place at a later date in Arizona.

Lorraine J. Gratz, was born Dec. 19, 1923, in Winona, Minn., the daughter of John and Victora (Dublinaski) Klaviter. She received her education in Winona and graduated from Winona High School. Shortly after graduation she married Joseph Gratz. The couple were married in Milwaukee, Wisc. in 1942.To this union, one son, Eugene, was born. While in Milwaukee she worked at Hot Point for many years, and enjoyed her job. The couple then moved to Sun Lakes, Ariz. While they were living there, Lorraine worked as a house keeper. Lorraine then moved to New Hampton to be near her family in 1997.

Baking was Lorraine’s favorite hobby. She always cooked cookies for her friends and family. She would take them tins full of cookies every week. Lorraine was always very organized, and followed a very tight schedule. She never missed her television shows, which included Wheel of Fortune and Lawrence Welk.

Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Carol Gratz of New Hampton; one grandson, Kristofer (Rachel Gaffney) Gratz of New Hampton; two step grandchildren, Sarah Eichenberger of Cedar Rapids and Philip (Kerrie) Eichenberger of Ionia; one great-grandaughter, Rylee Gratz of New Hampton; four step great-grandchildren, Jewel Eichenberger, Hannah Eichenberger, Lily Eichenberger, and Nicholas Denler all of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph in 1993; her son, Eugene in 2008; two sisters; and one brother.


Harold H. Thiele

Harold H. Thiele, age 86 of Elma, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014 surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Elma following the funeral mass.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m.with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in Elma. John Strawn

John T. Strawn passed away Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines from complications of cancer.

Mr. Strawn was born Dec. 14, 1938 in Des Moines, son of Olive Keeler Strawn and John T. Strawn Jr.

In 1957, he graduated from the Van Horne Consolidated Schools, Van Horne.

He continued his education at Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he graduated cum laude in 1961 as a history major and member of the national honorary scholastic society Phi Beta Kappa. His Cornell experience included spending one semester studying American government at American University in Washington, D.C.

Following three years of service in the U.S. Army Security Agency, some time of which was spent in Eritrea on the Horn of East Africa, Mr. Strawn attended The University of Iowa Graduate College of Business, then owned and operated variety, grocery, and gift stores in Vinton, New Hampton and West Des Moines.

In 1986, Mr. Strawn relocated to San Diego, and later to Santa Maria, Calif., where he worked for retail research and merchandising firms.

In 2009, Mr. Strawn returned to the Midwest to retire in Des Moines.

Mr. Strawn was preceded in death by his mother in 1998 and his father in 2007.

He is survived by his sister Mary and her husband. Richard Gaskins, of Mankato, Minn.; his sister Melinda and her husband, Jerry McCarty of Hackensack, Minn.; two nieces; three nephews’ two great nephews’ and one great niece.

At his request, there will be no services.

William Dailey

William R. Dailey, 82, of Oelwein, Iowa died on Sunday morning, Feb. 23, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein with Rev. Connie Markle officiating.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and from 11 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at the church.

Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein with graveside military rites.

A Memorial Fund has been established in his name.

William Ray Dailey was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Butler County, Iowa, the son of John Christian and Hattie (Ackerman) Dailey.

He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School and later attended Hawkeye Tech.

William proudly served in the United States Navy from June 30, 1952, to June 29, 1956, during the Korean War.

On May 11, 1963, he was united in marriage to Sandra Lee Leff at Waverly.

While farming William was also employed at Rath Packing Co., John Deere Tractor Works and the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Oelwein.

William enjoyed farming, small engine repairs, working on cars, dancing, and spending time with his family.

William is survived by his wife, Sandra of Oelwein; three children, Jennifer (Michael) Goodman of Bloomfield, Ky., Julie Dailey of Louisville, Ky., and Jered (Clorisa) Dailey of Oelwein; four grandchildren, Brandon Jones, Kenneth Wayne Jones, Jett Dailey and Jacob Dailey; two sisters, Eva Scoles of Waverly and Iva Dailey of Waterloo; brother, Lee Dailey of Clarksville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys Dailey; and two brothers, Carl and Harold Dailey.


Marcella Carney

Marcella M. “Sally” Carney, 98, of Cedar Falls, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

She was born April 4, 1915, in Devon, the daughter of Edmond and Frances Roethler Ungs.

She married Harold C. “Clair” Carney April 4, 1934 in North Washington. He died March 5, 1996.

Sally graduated from North Washington School and was employed as a cook at the University of Northern Iowa and later at the Brown Bottle Restaurant, both in Cedar Falls.

She is survived by eight sons, James “Jim” (Janet) of Waterloo, Francis (Lois) of Des Moines, Jack (Roberta) of Stockton, Mo., Tom (Debbie) of Arvada, Colo., Duane (Janice) of Unionville, Mo., Pat (Carol) of North Liberty, Gary (Linda) and Dean, both of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Anna May Gavigan of Waterloo and Joan (David) Farus of Lafayette, Colo.; 42 grandchildren; 101 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Ron; two daughter-in-laws, Jenny Jo Carney and Mary Lee Carney; four brothers, Clem, Dennis, Don, and Bob Ungs and one sister, Peg O’Neil; and two grandchildren, Leisa Alverson and Mary Carney.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at St Patrick Catholic Church, with interment in the Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, at the Richardson Funeral Service, where there was a 7 p.m. Rosary, and

Dell Detweiler

Dell E. Detweiler, 70 of Freeport, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer at his home on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014.

Born June 16, 1943 in Montgomery, Ala., Dell was the only child of Harry and Kathryn (Davis) Detweiler.

After high school, Del attended the University of Northern Iowa before joining the United States Navy where he served with distinction for four years as a 3rd class Torpedoman on the USS Cubera in the Submarine Corp. Upon leaving the Navy,

Del enrolled at Hawkeye Institute of Technology, in Waterloo, where he would go on to graduate with his Associates Degree.

On Oct. 14, 1967 Dell and Barbara Graham were united in marriage at Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo.

Dell retired from Micro Switch after 34 years of service, that would take them from Freeport, Ill., all the way to Las Cruces, N.M., for eight years, and ultimately back to Freeport where he retired in 2002.

After retiring from Micro Switch, Dell would go on to work at Highland Community College for 10 years in the custodial/security department. Dell loved to interact with students and facility. While at Highland, Dell spent a good deal of time volunteering with the Adult Reading Program where he mentored a number of students.

Dell was very much a family man. His wife and two sons meant everything to him. While the boys were young, Dell coached little league baseball, church basketball and was active in the Indian Guides.

Dell was also active in his church, for a number of years Dell taught Sunday school and was active on the church council.

Dell’s favorite hobbies were cards, golf, and the Chicago Cubs. Dell was a notorious card player and loved to play endless games of Bridge, Pinochle and Cribbage.

Later on Dell and his son Del Junior had a long-term heads up poker game that lasted for years.

Dell is survived by his wife of 46 years, his son Del and daughter-in law Tammy, his in-laws Arthur and Marie Graham, 3 sisters- in-law, two brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews and four loving pets.

Dell was proceeded in death by his son Scott (1989) Father, Mother, Mother-in-law Dorothy Graham, Sister-in-law Linda Herd and Brother–In-law Steven Graham.

A memorial services was at 11a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Luepke and Rev. Lynn Hawkins officiating.

There will be a gathering of friends and relatives on Thursday 10 a.m. till time of service.
