Judy K. Lemmon

May 16, 2012

Judy Kay Lemmon, 66, of Titonka, died on Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the St. Vincent Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, after a long battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 23, at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with Pastor Lee Nelson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 22, from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the service.

Judy Kay Lemmon, was born on December 1, 1945 in Sanborn, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Lyle) Boneschans. She graduated from the Worthington Senior High in 1963. Judy owned and operated a beauty shop in Clarion, for 24 years. Judy was married to Larry Lemmon on October 15, 1988. They started L&L Pest Control in 1988 and sold out in 2003. Judy also did Home Health Care. Larry and Judy moved to Fall Creek, Wisconsin, in 2003 and lived there until 2009. While living there Judy worked for Norske Nook and Younkers part time. In 2009, Larry and Judy moved to Titonka.

Judy enjoyed reading, loved Starbucks coffee, talking with her friends and especially loved playing with her grandkids.

Judy is survived by her husband, Larry Lemmon of Titonka; daughter, Shelly (Mark) Murray of Fairfield, Connecticut; four step-children, Elaine (Tom) Jorgensen of Eagle Grove, Wayne (Kim) Lemmon of Dansville, New York, Jodie (John) Kauffman of Eagle Grove and Nathan Lemmon of Britt; 12 grandchildren; brothers, Bob (Dorothy) of Iowa, Don (Marlene) of Florida, Doug (Judy) of Minnesota and Denny of Minnesota; sisters, Joy Fennell of North Dakota and Gail Lemmon of Britt; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Bertha (Lyle) Boneschans; and her 3 brothers, Harold, Dale and Gary.

The Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, was in charge of the arrangements.


Charles Bird

May 23, 2012

Charles D. Bird, 82, of Lower Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, died on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at the Spring House Estates.

Visitation was held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 17, with a memorial service at 11:30 a.m., at the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Christopher Heitkamp officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Reformed Church of Willow Grove, Willow Grove.

Charles was born on March 17, 1930 in Woden, to Clarence Albert Bird and Mina Elizabeth Sophia (Ward) Bird. Charlie was born, raised and educated in Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was certified as an electrical engineer in Pennsylvania and was employed at the Westinghouse Electric Company for 38 years, where he worked as an electrical engineer and retired as a district sales manager.

He was a long time member of Manufacturers' Golf and Country Club and the Reformed Church of Willow Grove. He was a resident of Spring House Estates, formerly of Fort Washington.

Beloved husband of Shirley for nearly 57 years; father of Amy Bird and David Bird, his wife, Katherine; grandfather of Nicholas, Anne, Robert, Caroline, Elizabeth, Margaret and Charles; brother of Robert Bird of Woden, Dale Bird, his wife Glenys of McHenry, Illinois and the late Irma McVey.

Stephen "Steve" Dawson

May 30, 2012

Stephen "Steve" Paul Dawson, of Cabot, Arkansas and formerly of Britt, died on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock, Arkansas, after a very courageous battle with cancer.

Steve was born on December 30, 1957 in Rawlins, Wyoming. His family later moved to Britt, where he attended elementary and high school. Steve later moved to Marshalltown and then to Arkansas with his job. Steve was a very talented artist of drawings.

He loved wood working, remodeling homes, and working outside. His passion was cooking, and he had begun writing his own cookbook. Family and friends will remember him as a hard worker who never complained and didn't let anything stop him. He will also be remembered as having a "heart bigger than the world." He was always there for you.

He is survived by his sisters, Jeneil (David) Smith of Danville, California and Melanie (Dennis) Mitchell of Mason City; his brother, Paul (Linda) Dawson of Newton; nephews, Brandon (Melissa) Smith of Livermore, California and Jordan Smith and fiancée, Ashley Chavez of Phoenix, Arizona; niece, Heather Dawson of Newton and great-nieces, Angel and Carissa of Newton. He was looking forward to the arrival in July of great-nephew, baby Chase to Brandon and Melissa. He is also survived by many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; both sets of grandparents; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials in Steve's memory may be sent to Hospice Home Care, Kaleidoscope of Caring, Inc., Little Rock, Arkansas.


Edwin L. Boothroyd

May 30, 2012

Edwin L. Boothroyd, Sr., 95, of Britt, died on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Edwin will be cremated according to his wishes. Military graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, May 30, in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt has been entrusted with arrangements.

Edwin was born on April 12, 1917 in Mason City, the son of Herbert Boothroyd and Cora (Hemming) Boothroyd. At the age of 4 he and his mother moved to Thornton where he received his education and graduated from the Thornton High School in 1934. After graduation he moved to Britt where he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He went to Officers Candidate School and served as an Air Force Captain during World War II. While in the service, he met and married his wife, Betty (Paranteau) Boothroyd in July of 1944 in Gulfport, Mississippi.

After being honorably discharged from the service, he and Betty returned to Britt and operated a grocery store for 15 years. He later went into construction and built a total of 35 houses in Britt.

In 1997, Ed suffered a stroke and in 1999 he entered Westview Care Center where he remained until his death. We would like to thank the entire staff, especially the nurses and CNA's for the exceptional love and care they gave to Ed and his entire family throughout his almost 14 year stay at Westview. No one could ask for better care and compassion than that given to him at the Westview Care Center.

Ed is survived by two sons, Edwin R. Boothroyd and his wife Mary Lou and their three sons and their families: Todd and wife Kara and their three children, Mitch, Katie, and Rachel of Clive, Iowa; Tony and wife Kelly and their 6 children, Tiana of Okinawa, Ty, Trevor, Travis, Troy, and Taylor of rural Boone, Iowa; and Toby and wife Bonnie and their three children, Delaney, Evan, and Emily of Britt, Iowa. His son, James and friend Sandy of Mason City, Iowa; a half brother, Herbert and his wife Barbara of Gainsville, Florida, and a half sister, Bonnie Lowry, of North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 2000; a brother, Harold in 1940; and by both of his parents.


Elizabeth "Betty" May

June 6, 2012

Elizabeth "Betty" May, died on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. She was 84.

Funeral services were held on Friday, June 1, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Reverend Joel DeBoer officiating. Inurnment was in the Corwith Cemetery.

Elizabeth "Betty" J. May, was born on February 20, 1928 in Woden, the daughter of Fritz and Elizabeth (Rohlfs) Gerdes. She grew up in Woden where she attended school and in 1945, Betty graduated from the Woden High School. On June 21, 1949, Betty was united in marriage to Don May at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden.

Betty enjoyed company and visiting with family and friends, as well as baking, gardening, golfing, playing cards and knitting. She was active in the community as a member of the Royal Neighbors, Esther Circle, H.O.M.E. Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the Birthday Card Club. Betty was also an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith.

Betty is survived by her husband, Don May of Corwith; three children, Tom and Peggy May of Arvada, Colorado, Mike and Becky May of Britt and Susie and Doug Gayken of Britt; six grandchildren, Nick and Lisa May, Ivy and Jason Gardner, Luke May, Paige May, Stacy and Anthony Babcock and Steven Gayken; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Barb Shipman of Nora Springs; sister-in-law, Leota Gerdes of Garner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Elizabeth; a great-grandson, Billy Gardner; brothers, John, Freddie, Hans, Henry and Ernest "Wink" her twin; and sisters, Mary Bode and Helen McGurk.

Nona VanDusseldorp

June 6, 2012

Nona A. VanDusseldorp, 92, of Britt, died on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 5, at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt, with Rev. Steve Hall officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Nona Alberta VanDusseldorp, the daughter of John and Amizon (Dunfee) Earles, was born on September 12, 1919 on a farm near Corwith. Most of her childhood was spent on farms southwest of Britt. In March of 1937, she moved with her family to Hutchins where she worked at the Dew Drop Inn. Nona attended rural school at Erin No. 9 and graduated from the Britt High School in 1938. On December 10, 1941, she was married to Melvin VanDusseldorp at Fort Dodge. They made their home in Fort Dodge until Melvin entered the military during World War II. They lived at Lawton, Oklahoma, where she worked at a cafe and then moved to Byoch, New York, where she was employed at a sewing factory making gun parts. They later moved to Tacoma, Washington, where Nona worked at a furniture factory. In 1946, they returned to Iowa and in 1947 moved to a farm northwest of Britt. Melvin passed away in 1975 and in 1977, Nona moved in to Britt where she worked at Britt Tech until retiring in 1982.

She was a member of the Britt American Legion Auxiliary.

Nona is survived by her children, Gloria (Walbert, Jr.) Mayland of Britt and Larry VanDusseldorp of Britt and his special friend, Irene Phillips; four grandchildren, Tammy (Alan) Abbas, Misty (Doug) Abbas, Becky (Charles) Fitz and Scott (Angie) VanDusseldorp; eleven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin on October 22, 1975; a daughter-in-law, Cindy (Meyer) VanDusseldorp; a grandson, Michael Mayland; three sisters, Sylvia Kearney, Murrie Fillenworth and Estle Earles; and six brothers, James in infancy, Willie, Harlow, Burkley, Hurshel and John, Jr.
