Steven Thompson

Steven Thompson, 40, of Britt,
passed away on Thursday, July
19, 2012, at Finley Hospital in
Dubuque, Iowa.
Funeral services
were held on Tuesday, July 24,
at 10:30 a.m., at the Christian
Reformed Church in Britt, with
Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating.
Burial was in the Evergreen
Cemetery in Britt. Visitation
was held on Monday, July 23,
from 5-7:00 p.m., at the Ewing
Funeral Chapel in Britt and
continued one hour prior to the
services at the church.
Steve was born on
November 16, 1971, to Darwin and
Jean (Kamp) Thompson in Forest
City. He was raised around the
Forest City area and finished
his education at the West
Hancock Schools in 1990. In July
1995, he married his wife Tammy
and welcomed her daughter,
Briana as his own. They were
blessed with their daughter,
Paige on his birthday of that
same year. Adding more blessings
to the family was their angel,
Alexis in October of 1997. In
2000, they were overjoyed with
the birth of their one and only
son, Hunter. His children were
his world.
Steve enjoyed
watching many sports: football
(including the Vikings), Twins
baseball, Nascar (especially
when Jimmie Johnson was winning)
and college basketball. He loved
the outdoors, spending time
playing frisbee golf, swimming
and camping. Steve was a friend
to almost everyone he met. He
always had a smile on his face
to cheer you up. He would do
anything for a friend or family
if it was within his power. For
the past five years, Steve has
been doing what he loves, being
an engineer for the railroad.
Prior to that, he was a painter
at IMT and Winnebago.
Steve was an
awesome guy who could always
make people smile and laugh! He
was such a great friend,
wonderful husband and dad! He
will be missed by all who knew
him.
Steve is survived
by his wife, Tammy of Britt;
their four children, Briana,
Paige, Alexis and Hunter, all of
Britt; mother, Jean Thompson of
Forest City; sister, Valorie
Thompson-Nielsen of Forest City;
brothers, Daniel (Mary) Thompson
of Forest City and Duane
Thompson of Arizona; father-in
law, Don Dakin of Moravia;
mother-in-law, Shari Dakin of
Klemme; brothers-in-law, Matt
Dakin of Moravia and Keith
(Billy Jo) Dakin of Forest City;
and many special nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded
in death by his father, Darwin;
brother, Jim; grandparents; and
several aunts and uncles. |
Terry "King" Mattoon

Terry "King" Mattoon, of Britt,
passed away on Sunday, July 22,
2012, at his home in Britt.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, July 25, at 10:30
a.m., at the First Lutheran
Church in Britt, with Pastor Lee
Nelson officiating. Burial was
in the Evergreen Cemetery in
Britt. Visitation was held on
Tuesday, July 24, from 5-7:00
p.m., at the First Lutheran
Church, in Britt and continued
one hour prior to the services
at the church.
Terry Alan Mattoon, the son of
Lester and Sarah (Miller)
Mattoon, was born on September
23, 1947 on a farm, northwest of
Britt. He was raised in the
Britt area and attended school
in Britt. Terry graduated from
the Britt High School in 1965.
Terry was drafted into the Army
after high school and served his
country for two years. Terry
received his honorable discharge
from the Army in 1971. After the
two years of active duty, Terry
worked at Winnebago before
moving to Florida and working
for Donny DeKruif power-washing
homes. Terry moved back to Britt
in 1975 after his father passed
away. Upon returning, Terry
began working at Yohn’s where he
was employed for the last 36
years.
Terry loved to play cribbage. In
his earlier years he played
darts and bowled.
Terry is survived by Judy
Austerman of Britt; his sister,
Kathy (Verle) Everett of Britt;
brothers, Bill (Diane) Mattoon
of Britt and Rick (Pat) Mattoon
of Britt; brother-in-law, Bob
Slobe of Florida; along with
numerous nieces, nephews, other
family members and friends.
He
was preceded in death by his
parents; and sister, Nancy Slobe.

was in charge of the

Donald J. Nedved
August 1, 2012
Donald J. Nedved, 81, of Britt,
died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012,
at the Concord Care Center in
Garner, surrounded by his
family.
According to his wishes, private
graveside services will be held
in the St. John's Catholic
Cemetery in Duncan, with Fr.
Dennis Miller officiating.
Military rites will be conducted
by the Britt Veterans Ceremonial
Unit. There will be no
visitation. The Cataldo Funeral
Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Donald John Nedved, the son of
Aldrich and Lillian (Tlach)
Nedved, was born on June 24,
1931 on a farm north of Duncan.
He graduated from the Hayfield
Consolidated High School in
1949. Don served his country in
the U.S. Army 461st Infantry
Battalion, 87th Infantry Regt.
during the Korean conflict from
1952, until his honorable
discharge in 1954. He received
many battle decorations
including the Korean Service
Medal with 2 Bronze Stars,
Combat Infantryman Badge, United
Nations Service Medal, National
Defense Service Medal and the
Distinguished Unit Citation.
On
March 3, 1953, he married Donna
Mae Tschirki at the United
Methodist Church in Forest City.
They made their home north of
Eagle Lake where they farmed. In
1966, they moved into Britt. Don
was employed with the Hancock
County Road Department until his
retirement.
He
enjoyed spending time with his
family, dancing, polka music,
hunting, trapping, farming,
watching nature, going up town
every morning for pancakes and
being with his morning friends.
He was a member of the St.
Patrick's Catholic Church and
the Britt American Legion and
VFW.
Don is survived by his wife of
59 years, Donna Mae of Britt;
three children, Julie (Robert)
Steiff of Middle Amana, Mark
Nedved of Crystal Lake and Nancy
(David) Jakoubek of Garner;
grandchildren, Justin, Kyle and
Rebecca Steiff, Jeremy (Mindy)
Nedved, Joshua Nedved, Matthew
(Paula) Jakoubek and Korey
Jakoubek (fiancee, Meagan);
great-grandchildren, Chloe and
Joel Nedved and Iris Jakoubek; a
brother, Al Nedved, Jr. of
Kansas City, Missouri; his
mother-in-law, Anna Tschirki of
Britt; two sisters-in-law, Betty
Nedved of Hayfield and Leola
Nedved of Britt; a
brother-in-law, Robert (Mandy)
Tschirki of Centennial,
Colorado; and many nieces and
nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers, Elmer and
Arnold Nedved; and
father-in-law, Chris Tschirki.
Memorials may be given in his
memory to Concord Care Center,
Hospice of North Iowa or the
West Hancock Ambulance Service.
Don's family would like to thank
